  1. may I speak to you in the name of God

  2. who is father son and holy spirit amen

  3. am when when I was a senior in college I

  4. made a

  5. mistake a big one

  6. one day as a confident young man I

  7. thought to myself I was riding my bike

  8. and I thought to myself do I really need

  9. to have my hands on the

  10. handlebars surely I as a coordinated

  11. 21-year-old can manage riding a bicycle

  12. with no

  13. hands well I was

  14. wrong I fell off my bike and broke my

  15. right arm and my left

  16. wrist I I had to have surgery to prepare

  17. my arm and I wore a brace on my left

  18. wrist for

  19. months and as I was recovering I started

  20. to notice an interesting pattern in some

  21. of the conversations that I was having

  22. people at my small Christian liberal

  23. arts college started to ask why did this

  24. happen to

  25. me I had friends who would jokingly say

  26. to me man you must have had some serious

  27. sin in your life

  28. because certainly there must be some

  29. spiritual meaning behind The Suffering I

  30. was encount encountering certainly

  31. breaking not one but two arms cannot be

  32. the result of the hubris of an overly

  33. confident young

  34. man there must have been spiritual

  35. forces at play I even had someone in all

  36. seriousness tell me you know I typically

  37. don't believe in this sort of thing but

  38. I think the devil may be attacking

  39. you you know things aren't going your

  40. way when your life makes somebody

  41. reconsider the nature of spiritual

  42. warfare but I must admit I started to

  43. ask these questions

  44. myself was God trying to teach me a

  45. lesson was this the result of some sin

  46. in my life or the spiritual forces of

  47. Darkness at play did the devil somehow

  48. stick his finger in the spoke of my

  49. bicycle

  50. wheel the desire to ask these types of

  51. questions is not uncommon we see it all

  52. the time we see books that ask why bad

  53. things happen to good people and why

  54. good things happen to bad people we

  55. can't help but associate a direct

  56. one-o-one correlation between sin and

  57. suffering between righteousness and

  58. blessings

  59. and this often leads to a game of

  60. comparison feeling the sneaking

  61. suspicion that someone who is more

  62. misfortunate must be more

  63. sinful because if they weren't sinful

  64. then of course they wouldn't be so

  65. misfortunate when encountering someone

  66. who's experiencing poverty I've often

  67. heard it said that their poverty is a

  68. result of their sin

  69. implied in that statement of course is

  70. the assumption that I am not as poor as

  71. that person because I am not as

  72. sinful when looking at countries that do

  73. not have the vast amount of material

  74. resources that we do here we are told it

  75. is because we are Godly and

  76. righteous implying that if other places

  77. were less sinful and more righteous like

  78. us

  79. they too would have a vast amount of

  80. material

  81. resources in a world of political

  82. division every election season we hear

  83. the party that won claim that they are

  84. the party of

  85. righteousness therefore the party that

  86. lost must be the party of

  87. sinfulness and while this posture of

  88. trying to cor to find a correlation

  89. between trials and sin and comparing our

  90. elves to others is not uncommon it is

  91. also not

  92. new it's in job as his friends tried to

  93. tell him that he must have sinned

  94. otherwise he would not be suffering so

  95. severely it's in John chapter 9 as

    John 9 chapter mention

  96. Jesus's disciples asked him if it was

  97. because of the sin of his parents or of

  98. his own sin that a man had been born

  99. blind

  100. and it's in our gospel passage for this

  101. morning as Jesus discusses two

  102. Unfortunate

  103. Events now these events are unique to

  104. Luke meaning they aren't in the other

  105. gospels and they're found nowhere else

  106. in any ancient literature so it's a

  107. little difficult to narrow down exactly

  108. what

  109. happened but the first had to do with

  110. pilate and some

  111. galileans and while we aren't all the

  112. details we know that pilate could be

  113. cruel and for whatever reason perhaps

  114. there was some Rebellion or maybe it was

  115. just a random act of Cruelty whatever

  116. the case pilate mixed the Bloods of

  117. galileans with the blood of their

  118. sacrifice which would have been

  119. extremely scandalous and offensive as it

  120. was an obvious violation of their

  121. religious

  122. practices and Jesus brings up the second

  123. event the tower in Salam falling on and

  124. killing 18

  125. people again we don't know the details

  126. of how this happened maybe the tower was

  127. poorly constructed or maybe there was

  128. some natural disaster that caused it to

  129. fall whatever the case 18 people died

  130. unexpectedly and Luke doesn't tell us

  131. exactly what the crowds were thinking

  132. but based on Jesus's response it seems

  133. as though they fell into that mindset

  134. the mindset of correlating sin and

  135. tragedy and of comparing your

  136. circumstance with the circumstance of

  137. others because Jesus's response to both

  138. events is the same in regards to pilate

  139. in the galileans he says in verse 2 and

  140. 3 do you think that these galileans were

  141. worse Sinners than other

  142. galileans because they suffered in this

  143. way no I tell you but unless you repent

  144. you will all likewise

  145. perish And in regards to the tower in

  146. salom he says in verse 5 four and five

  147. do you think that they were worse

  148. offenders than all others who lived in

  149. Jerusalem no I tell you but unless you

  150. repent you will all likewise perish

  151. and then Jesus changes the subject and

  152. tells a seemingly unrelated Parable a

  153. man had a fig tree in his Vineyard that

  154. was not bearing fruit and after 3 years

  155. he desires to cut it down but the vine

  156. dresser advocates for the tree and says

  157. that he will care for it and fertilize

  158. it he ask for one more year and if the

  159. tree doesn't bear fruit then the tree

  160. can be cut

  161. down and there are four things that I

  162. want to point our attention to from our

  163. gospel passage from this morning

  164. first notice that whether the disaster

  165. was caused by

  166. human as in the case of pilot or was the

  167. result of a freak accident like the

  168. tower Jesus is not concerned with trying

  169. to decipher why these things

  170. happened he does not try to find a

  171. correlation between sin and tragedy

  172. rather he challenges his audience by

  173. asking them if they think that it is

  174. because that they were worse Sinners

  175. that these people

  176. suffered Jesus turns these events back

  177. on his audience when he asks do you

  178. think that people who experience these

  179. tragedies are more

  180. sinful and then of course he answers his

  181. own question no I say do you repent or

  182. you will likewise perish

  183. Jesus does not allow us to presume that

  184. we know why God allows certain things to

  185. happen neither does he allow us to

  186. compare ourselves to others and assume

  187. that we are morally Superior to those

  188. who

  189. suffer instead he turns our assumptions

  190. in cons comparisons back towards us

  191. reminding us that we are sinful people

  192. just like everyone

  193. else Jesus gives a reminder that because

  194. things may be going well for you and

  195. just because someone else is less

  196. fortunate than you it is not an

  197. indication that you are less

  198. sinful now let me be

  199. clear this does not mean that we do not

  200. acknowledge the spiritual realities that

  201. we are all facing after all James tells

  202. us that all good and perfect things come

  203. from above and Paul in Ephesians tells

  204. us that we do not wrestle against flesh

  205. and blood but against principalities and

  206. powers and the rulers of Darkness of

  207. this age against spiritual hosts of

  208. wickedness but perhaps the best way to

  209. accept the good gifts of God and to

  210. combat the rulers of

  211. Darkness perhaps the best way to follow

  212. Jesus Christ is not to decipher the

  213. spiritual reason behind why things

  214. happened but to be a people who

  215. continually repent and turn towards

  216. God which leads to the second thing we

  217. must consider we must be people who

  218. repent no matter what is going on around

  219. us and repentance is not just a feeling

  220. of regret about one's own wickedness but

  221. a turning away from sin and turning to

  222. God which perhaps is particularly

  223. appropriate for us as we are in the

  224. middle of the season of

  225. Lent the season of penitence

  226. almsgiving and

  227. repentance have you ever stopped to

  228. think

  229. that lent comes every year no matter

  230. what lent doesn't wait for the opportune

  231. moment it doesn't wait for Sinners to be

  232. punished and for righteous to be

  233. blessed it doesn't wait for things to go

  234. well or poorly for you or for your

  235. neighbor it doesn't wait for those who

  236. you disagree with to experience

  237. suffering or success Lent comes every

  238. year whether your preferred political

  239. party is in power or not lent

  240. comes whether people that you think are

  241. sinners are finding success or failure

  242. lent

  243. comes if you find that you are in a

  244. season of Plenty or in a season of

  245. wanting lent comes and is always an

  246. opportunity to repent to turn from your

  247. sin

  248. towards

  249. God because ultimately repentance is the

  250. way of

  251. life although it does not feel like

  252. it it may not feel like the way of life

  253. as you begin lent by leaning forward and

  254. receiving ashes and being reminded that

  255. you are dust and to dust you shall

  256. return and yet

  257. lent always leads to

  258. Easter turning away from your sin and

  259. towards the grace of God is actually

  260. what leads towards life with God but if

  261. we do not go through

  262. lent if we do not die to ourselves and

  263. turn towards God if we do not repent no

  264. matter what is going on in the world

  265. around us Jesus warns that we will

  266. perish

  267. the third thing worth

  268. noting is that immediately after telling

  269. the crowds that they must repent or

  270. perish Jesus tells a parable of a Vine

  271. dresser who is patient and

  272. kind Jesus is able to hold the need for

  273. repentance in the patience of God

  274. together he does not Elevate one one

  275. above the other he knows that God is

  276. both

  277. just and merciful both wrathful towards

  278. sin yet compassionate God desires

  279. repentance yet is

  280. patient and we must learn to emulate

  281. Jesus we must learn to be people who

  282. show patience yet desire repentance

  283. because that is how God looks at us

  284. the fourth and final thing I want to

  285. point our attention to is that the vine

  286. dresser is not only patient but

  287. nourishing he does not only give the

  288. tree time but he cares for it and gives

  289. it

  290. fertilizer God and his great loving

  291. towards us does not leave us on our own

  292. he is the

  293. actor he does not leave us defend for

  294. ourselves but he nourishes us and gives

  295. us the ability to bear

  296. fruit he has given us his word where we

  297. learn what it means to pick up our cross

  298. and to follow Christ in the way of life

  299. he nourishes us through his holy

  300. church where we become part of the body

  301. of

  302. Christ and where we partake in the gifts

  303. of his sacraments

  304. where our sinful bodies are made clean

  305. by his body and our souls washed through

  306. his most precious blood where we may

  307. ever more dwell in him and he in

  308. us and he has given us the gift of His

  309. Holy Spirit who convicts and guides us

  310. showing us how to be people who repent

  311. and bear

  312. fruit so as you go forth into the world

  313. in the Name of Christ treat every

  314. opportunity as an opportunity to

  315. repent be people who repent and

  316. recognize that you are a sinner who must

  317. turn towards a good patient and

  318. nourishing

  319. God repent and turn towards God no

  320. matter what is going on around you

  321. repent and bear fruit

  322. do not think yourself better than those

  323. who are

  324. struggling but bear fruit by giving to

  325. and caring for the poor the sick the

  326. orphan the Widow and the

  327. refugee in a world full of division and

  328. hatred do not think yourself less sinful

  329. than your enemies but repent and bear

  330. fruit by learning to love

  331. them repent now and bear fruit knowing

  332. that God is patient knowing that he who

  333. has started a good work in you will

  334. carry it on to completion in the day of

  335. Christ Jesus amen
