  1. let us pray oh father I pray that you

  2. would reconcile us to yourself today

  3. make yourself known to us and Lord give

  4. us the courage to offer ourselves to be

  5. known by you bless the words of my mouth

  6. and the meditations of all of our hearts

  7. oh God Amen please be seated

  8. had the privilege as some of you may

  9. know of going to Washington DC this past

  10. week and participating in a Summit with

  11. the one campaign and Scoggin BG who's a

  12. member of our church who I think might

  13. still be there is a leader he's a faith

  14. leader in the one campaign so he was the

  15. one who was responsible for inviting me

  16. and others and while I was there in

  17. Washington DC I had a couple encounters

  18. with people that brought some awareness

  19. in light of this parable about the two

  20. sons that Jesus told and one of the

  21. encounters was right in front of the

  22. White House as I was going to see it I

  23. was approached by a man who ended up

  24. learning that he was homeless and he had

  25. been in prison and had lost everything

  26. and as we walked beside each other as he

  27. smoked a joint and I listened to

  28. him I learned that he lost everything

  29. and was very angry angry and he was

  30. angry at God and as we parted ways he

  31. went off yelling angrily at people and

  32. nobody and he had nothing but the the

  33. tragedy was is that he had also

  34. distanced himself from God and did not

  35. have communion or the desire communion

  36. with God or a desire to seek God and so

  37. I pray for him that God touches him and

  38. draws him to himself but a couple days

  39. later we were visiting representatives

  40. in the Congressional Office Buildings

  41. and randomly I entered into a

  42. conversation with a congressman just he

  43. and I face Toof face with each other and

  44. had a few minutes and this is a man who

  45. is wealthy

  46. multi-millionaire in the halls of power

  47. very much influence one of the top

  48. ranking

  49. officials has access to everything in

  50. the world someone might need and yet by

  51. all appearances is very miserable very

  52. much in Misery the song that we just

  53. sang before the gospel was read there

  54. was that line uh strain and stress this

  55. man had the strain and stress of having

  56. everything in the world that he probably

  57. wanted and I I know from a little

  58. research he is someone who has declared

  59. himself not a believer in God very much

  60. a

  61. humanist and the dichotomy between the

  62. homeless man in him was very vast and

  63. yet they shared a similarity they were

  64. both distant from God neither of them in

  65. communion with God both of them

  66. experiencing The Strain and stress and

  67. misery of a self-centered life

  68. self-indulgent self-righteous apart from

  69. God and it sheds some light on this

  70. Parable because it's not what we have or

  71. don't

  72. have that brings us into communion with

  73. the Lord Lord and brings us into a

  74. fulfilling and meaningful life it is

  75. that very one thing that Jesus is

  76. calling us into communion with the

  77. Father the Son and the Holy Spirit that

  78. gives our life fulfillment and that

  79. actually gives our life life and so I

  80. want to read through this Parable and

  81. bring to light I think what God wants to

  82. speak to us today knowing that there's

  83. many ways that God speaks through such a

  84. parable but it's in Luke chapter 15 it's

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  85. it's on page

  86. 1039 of your Pew Bibles and it's

  87. beginning in verse 11 and I want to walk

  88. through

  89. this Jesus said there was a man who had

  90. two sons and the younger of them said to

  91. his father father give me the share of

  92. the property that is coming to me and he

  93. divided his property between them so the

  94. younger son comes he doesn't really have

  95. any interest about the father their

  96. relationship he wants his

  97. stuff but it's interesting that the

  98. father doesn't just give him his stuff

  99. he divides his share with the other

  100. brother they both receive their

  101. inheritance they both receive their

  102. possessions the younger brother we learn

  103. not many days later gathered all that he

  104. had and took a journey into a far

  105. country and there he squandered his

  106. property in Reckless living He indulges

  107. himself using all that he had to indulge

  108. into whatever Temptations He had sounds

  109. like he Liv lives a very hedonistic

  110. lifestyle and soon comes to the place

  111. where all that he had had been

  112. spent if we live whether it's

  113. indulgently or

  114. aesthetically dependent upon what we

  115. have whether it's a little or a lot we

  116. will come to the place where it is

  117. spent our souls are spent eventually all

  118. that we have in this world will be

  119. spent because we will leave it if we try

  120. to attain to some

  121. self-righteousness spiritually we will

  122. be

  123. spent the example of this young man is

  124. what happens when we rely on

  125. ourselves the older son we will learn he

  126. doesn't go anywhere he doesn't spend

  127. anything but what he has is exhausted as

  128. well because he has neglected all that

  129. the father has given him and he's

  130. remained in himself

  131. self-centered and

  132. self-righteous and as miserable as the

  133. younger son is when he finds himself

  134. feeding the

  135. pigs whether it's through Indulgence or

  136. whether it's through pride and

  137. self-righteousness if we rely on

  138. ourselves and try to entertain and

  139. satisfy ourselves we will come to the

  140. place where we are spent and exhausted

  141. and desperate and that's where the

  142. younger son comes to the awareness of

  143. his situation when he had spent

  144. everything a severe famine arose in the

  145. country and he began to be in need so he

  146. went and hired himself out to one of the

  147. citizens of that country who set him

  148. into the fields to feed pigs and he was

  149. longing to be fed with the pods that the

  150. pigs ate and no one gave him

  151. anything but when he came to himself he

  152. came to this awareness that what I'm

  153. doing is not working I cannot rely on

  154. myself this is ridiculous it's not going

  155. anywhere by God's grace may we come to

  156. that realization that whether we're

  157. trying to do it on our own spiritually

  158. or whether we are trying to satisfy

  159. oursel through some

  160. Indulgence it's not going to be enough

  161. we will exhaust that and by God's grace

  162. we will turn to the father and say wait

  163. a minute I have a father

  164. and what the son realizes about the

  165. father is what is true for our heavenly

  166. father when he came to himself he said

  167. how many of my father's hired servants

  168. have more than enough

  169. bread his father had more than enough

  170. the least in his father's household had

  171. more than enough even after the father

  172. had given to the younger son his

  173. inheritance and to the older son his

  174. inheritance there was still more than

  175. enough for even the hired servants in

  176. that household

  177. it's a mistake and error to think that

  178. because what we can have in this world

  179. is limited and we exhaust it and spend

  180. it to think that God's resources are

  181. also so limited and can be exhausted in

  182. the father's house there is more than

  183. enough the father doesn't worry about if

  184. he gives to you he won't have enough for

  185. someone else just like the father in the

  186. parable wasn't worried about that he had

  187. more more than enough Our Father in

  188. Heaven has more than enough and what he

  189. wants is each of you and

  190. me the son comes to his senses and in

  191. verse 18 says I will

  192. arise and go to my father and I will say

  193. to him father I've sinned against heaven

  194. and before you I am no longer worthy to

  195. be called your son treat me as one of

  196. your hired servants and he arose and

  197. came to his father and what he is doing

  198. and what he is giving to the father is

  199. the one thing the father desires is his

  200. Fellowship his presence a relationship

  201. with him it's the one thing that the

  202. father cannot produce or have on his own

  203. a relationship with his son it requires

  204. the surrender the commitment of the

  205. son the son thinks that he's going to

  206. beg from his father to give him what he

  207. needs to survive what he doesn't realize

  208. is he in going home is giving the father

  209. everything the father is Desiring a

  210. relationship with him he arises and he

  211. goes to his

  212. father and while he was still a long way

  213. off his father saw him and felt

  214. compassion and ran and embraced him and

  215. kissed

  216. him for each one of

  217. us the father is Desiring us our father

  218. in Heaven is Desiring not just that we

  219. know about him but that we truly know

  220. him and are known by him he desires an

  221. intimate relationship with us as crazy

  222. as that sounds as almost offensive

  223. because why would someone want such an

  224. intimate relationship with me I'm not

  225. worthy I've made mistakes I've indulged

  226. myself I've lived in Pride and

  227. self-righteousness this cannot be but

  228. the point Jesus is making in this

  229. Parable is that yes it can be it is true

  230. the father desires you

  231. all of you

  232. and there's a deadline for that

  233. reconciliation this father in the

  234. parable it seems like he was longing for

  235. the return of his son so that when he

  236. sees him he runs to

  237. him the father is longing for return to

  238. him of everyone for whom Christ

  239. died he can woo you with his love as we

  240. learned from St Paul's reading 2

  241. Corinthians God is working and was

  242. working in Christ to reconcile the world

  243. to himself that's what God is working

  244. but he won't control you like a puppet

  245. or a robot he Woos you with his love

  246. that you would come to him and give him

  247. that thing that he most

  248. desires and you might say there is some

  249. desperation in the father in the parable

  250. because there is a deadline because that

  251. deadline is that there's a line and on

  252. one side of it a person is alive on the

  253. other side they're dead and can no

  254. longer bring about this reconciliation

  255. and return this father is hoping and

  256. praying that his son will return before

  257. he dies or his son dies and that

  258. deadline exists for every single one of

  259. us to give ourselves fully to God before

  260. that line of

  261. death so when the father sees him him he

  262. rejoices because the son has returned

  263. while they are both in the land of the

  264. living they can be reconciled they can

  265. Rejoice together

  266. now before it would have been too late

  267. so the father rejoices he says to his

  268. servants bring quickly the best robe and

  269. put it on him put a ring on his hand and

  270. the shoes on his feet bring the best

  271. robe we think if somebody gets the best

  272. robe that means everyone else is not

  273. getting it and that's not fair and

  274. that's what the older son is thinking

  275. why does he get the best robe in the

  276. ring I wanted

  277. that that's to think from our

  278. perspective in God's house there's more

  279. than enough there are a multitude of

  280. best robes there are a multitude of

  281. rings that God puts on his sons and

  282. daughters who come to him because we are

  283. all his in Christ

  284. Jesus there's more than enough in God's

  285. house but it's the the thinking that if

  286. someone gets that best robe then I don't

  287. and I'm better than him and look what

  288. he's done and what a jerk and I'm just

  289. going to stay outside that's the

  290. attitude of the older son that is as

  291. self-centered and indulgent as the

  292. younger son's attitude it's expressed in

  293. different

  294. ways so the father creates this C

  295. celebration with the fattened calf let

  296. us eat and celebrate for this my son was

  297. dead and is alive again he was lost and

  298. his found and they began to celebrate

  299. and by the other the previous two

  300. parables in Luke 15 we know from what

  301. Jesus says that when one sinner returns

  302. to the father from Death to life from

  303. being lost to

  304. found from Darkness to light all of

  305. Heaven rejoices

  306. imagine

  307. that one act of repentance by God's

  308. grace through faith in Christ brings

  309. about rejoicing and celebrating in

  310. heaven because those that were lost are

  311. found they are brought into the father's

  312. hand and no one can snatch one of God's

  313. Own from his hand so they celebrate

  314. because what is being celebrated is an

  315. eternal

  316. relationship this son in the parable is

  317. not going to leave again the father has

  318. him home let's wrap him in a robe let's

  319. put a ring on his finger let's put shoes

  320. on his feet let's celebrate and feed him

  321. that he will never leave again that he

  322. will like the psalmist encourages all of

  323. us taste and see the goodness of God and

  324. he will never leave the house of his

  325. father

  326. again now his older son was in the field

  327. and he came and Drew near to the house

  328. and and he heard music and dancing the

  329. older son while there with the

  330. father who split the inheritance and

  331. gave one to each is out there in the

  332. fields you get to feel like he's distant

  333. from the father like he's distant from

  334. the father's house he's out there in the

  335. field with the Hired

  336. Hands and he called one of those

  337. servants and he asked what these things

  338. meant he doesn't know he doesn't know

  339. the father's longing for the younger son

  340. he doesn't

  341. appreciate the father's desire to have

  342. that son back with

  343. him he says when he learns that the

  344. father has killed the fattened calf

  345. because he has received the younger son

  346. back safe and sound in verse 28 but he

  347. was angry and refused to go in

  348. it seems like he knows what the younger

  349. son has been doing he's heard rumors

  350. he's heard

  351. stories rather than join in the father's

  352. longing for reconciliation like Paul

  353. tells us God is doing in us he has

  354. reconciled us to himself through Christ

  355. so that we can become ministers of

  356. reconciliation this son has rather

  357. judged the other son and condemned him

  358. and essentially just wished for him to

  359. go away and probably even

  360. die that's his anger that's his reason

  361. for refusing to go into the celebration

  362. I don't want that guy back I never

  363. wanted to see him again it's a natural

  364. human

  365. attitude but it's not the father's the

  366. father's attitude is full of grace and

  367. mercy and thanks be to God because that

  368. is what we all need we all need the same

  369. grace and mercy shown to this younger

  370. son and the father goes out to the older

  371. son and entreats

  372. him but he answered his father look

  373. these many years I have served you and

  374. I've have never disobeyed your

  375. command th this Parable is like others

  376. that Jesus told the Pharisee and the tax

  377. collector who go into the temple the

  378. Pharisee thanks God that he's not like

  379. that guy he's been good

  380. but the tax collector just says Lord

  381. have mercy on me a sinner and Jesus said

  382. he was justified there's another parable

  383. of two sons whom the father says to go

  384. out into the field and work and one says

  385. okay but then doesn't he goes and does

  386. what he wants to do but the second says

  387. no I'm not going but then he goes and

  388. Jesus asked which one did what the

  389. father wanted and it was the latter and

  390. then Jesus confronts the Pharisees and

  391. the rulers who were self-righteous and

  392. he says

  393. the tax collectors and the prostitutes

  394. are entering the kingdom ahead of you

  395. and you refuse to repent and believe

  396. it's all about entering the kingdom we

  397. do that all through Mercy none of us

  398. deserves it but this self-centered

  399. self-righteousness keeps us from

  400. communion with the father and whether

  401. people know it or not it keeps us in

  402. misery like this older son

  403. he complains that you never gave me a

  404. young goat that I might celebrate with

  405. my friends but when this son of yours

  406. came who has devoured your property with

  407. prostitutes you killed the fattened calf

  408. form at the beginning of this Parable

  409. the father gave him

  410. everything everything the father had was

  411. his yet he neglects it he doesn't

  412. receive the gift of the father's

  413. inheritance the gift of everything that

  414. the father has in his

  415. household for all of us we have to make

  416. sure that we have received the gift of

  417. God's grace that we've received the gift

  418. of Salvation through Jesus Christ that

  419. we don't just hang around it but remain

  420. self-centered and

  421. self-righteous we have to make sure that

  422. we

  423. come and say to the father I am yours

  424. and I receive the gift The Inheritance

  425. the salvation

  426. of your kingdom through

  427. Jesus Jesus I receive your forgiveness

  428. of sins I receive you into my life give

  429. me your Holy

  430. Spirit make me your child your son your

  431. daughter the father pleads again and he

  432. said Son you are always with me and all

  433. that is mine is

  434. yours this is God's message to us in

  435. Christ Jesus said the father has given

  436. me a

  437. kingdom and I confer upon you a

  438. kingdom when he began his ministry he

  439. said repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is

  440. here he's not saying that for his own

  441. sake he's saying it for your sake and my

  442. sake that we would recognize that Jesus

  443. has brought the Kingdom of Heaven to us

  444. and is offering it to us as a gift that

  445. we might receive it and that we might

  446. enter into it and explore all that the

  447. father has for us because the father

  448. says in this final verse it was fitting

  449. to celebrate and be glad for this your

  450. brother was dead and is alive he was

  451. lost and is

  452. found the father declares the truth not

  453. the son that it was fitting to celebrate

  454. and to Rejoice because him who was lost

  455. is found him who was dead has been made

  456. alive it is fitting to rejoice and

  457. celebrate we we get bogged down with the

  458. things of this

  459. world we get weighed down with our

  460. self-importance we get distracted with

  461. the Temptations that tempt us to indulge

  462. in them and all of that leads us from

  463. the father it leads us from the

  464. celebration of the Kingdom of Heaven it

  465. leads us from our reconciliation with

  466. God and prevents us from being ministers

  467. of

  468. reconciliation recognizing that there is

  469. a celebration to invite other people to

  470. who though they're not worthy on their

  471. own They will receive the same welcome

  472. that the younger son receives the

  473. Embrace of God the entrance into the

  474. Kingdom of

  475. Heaven there's a wonderful verse in

  476. Romans chapter

  477. 8:32 Paul assures the Romans of God's

  478. goodness and his generosity when he says

  479. he who did not spare his own son but

  480. gave him up for us all how will he not

  481. also Al along with him graciously give

  482. us all things and what does God desire

  483. what does he ask us to do well if we

  484. look at the parable what did the father

  485. ask the younger son to do he didn't ask

  486. him to do anything the very posture of

  487. his of his humility and return was

  488. enough what God asked us to do is to

  489. call him father to pray as the spirit

  490. inspires ABA

  491. father come to me fill me with your

  492. presence I am

  493. yours to say to the father Jesus has

  494. purchased me on the cross I belong to

  495. you bring me into your kingdom give me

  496. eternal

  497. life when I was coming home from

  498. Washington DC from the hotel to the

  499. airport I took an Uber which I've done

  500. before but it's been a while and the

  501. driver had the Uber app on which has the

  502. map gives in directions like we've all

  503. heard turn right here in a mile turn

  504. left but then I got caught it caught my

  505. attention because close to the airport

  506. it said in half a mile pull to the right

  507. and drop Craig off by American Airlines

  508. and I

  509. thought wow that's very personal and

  510. then in a quarter of a

  511. mile dropped Craig off on the right

  512. American Air lines and while I felt

  513. special I

  514. thought you know that's what I need all

  515. the time like Craig it's 6:30 wake up

  516. today and go do this or Craig call your

  517. daughter and say

  518. this wouldn't that be something well we

  519. don't have that I'm

  520. sorry but we do have some more General

  521. commands from god of what to do and and

  522. I want to emphasize just

  523. one and we'll hear it again in the

  524. service it's the first comfortable word

  525. that we read after the Absolution

  526. following our

  527. confession Matthew

    Matthew 11:28

  528. 11:28 I think it is the one command

  529. above all that we must do

  530. first come to

  531. me all who labor and are heavy laden and

  532. I will give you rest

  535. Proclaim anything loudly throughout the

  536. land to reach that son who went far off

  538. anything to break through the hardness

  539. of the self-centered heart of that older

  540. son I think it would be come to

  541. me and what God I think would say to
