  1. let us

  2. pray lord I pray that you grant us

  3. knowledge of your will through all

  4. spiritual wisdom and

  5. understanding and by the Holy Spirit

  6. grant us knowledge of you oh God even

  7. today let us know you more and be

  8. transformed into your image and likeness

  9. through Jesus Christ in whose name we

  10. pray amen please be seated

  11. it is wonderful to be in the presence of

  12. the Lord this

  13. morning and to know that he's here and

  14. ministering to

  15. us the gospel lesson this morning from

  16. Luke the story of the women going to the

  17. tomb and finding not what they

  18. anticipated reminded me of a story of my

  19. own dad who lived in Odessa Texas and

  20. while we were living in Charleston South

  21. Carolina he was coming to visit us and

  22. he was flying from Midland to Charleston

  23. and of course you have to go through

  24. either Dallas or Houston he went through

  25. Dallas and he arranged the flights so he

  26. could fly Southwest from Midland to

  27. Dallas and then since Southwest didn't

  28. fly to Charleston he had to fly Delta so

  29. he arranged it all himself with plenty

  30. of time between the flights and he flew

  31. into Love Field in Dallas via Southwest

  32. got off the plane to check the logs find

  33. out what gate his Delta flight to

  34. Charleston was in and there was no

  35. mention of Delta anywhere at Love Field

  36. and he looked around bewildered

  37. eventually he asked someone "Where is

  38. Delta where's the Delta information?"

  39. And he found out that Delta was not

  40. there delta was at the Dallas Fort Worth

  41. airport and he had about an hour to get

  42. there and make his flight which by the

  43. grace of God he did but I imagine his

  44. dumbfoundedness and perplexity was

  45. similar to some extent like the ladies

  46. when they went to the tomb and found it

  47. empty they were perplexed luke tells us

  48. in his very subtle

  49. tone a major theme of scripture and

  50. especially the resurrection is that the

  51. reality of God's kingdom the reality of

  52. Jesus Christ crucified and risen from

  53. the dead and at the right hand of the

  54. father blows away our expectations and

  55. our perspective in this world and it's

  56. demonstrated by the story of these

  57. ladies who were faithful and devoted

  58. followers of Jesus some even before he

  59. began his ministry and then by the

  60. apostles and those other disciples who

  61. were with them they didn't imagine or

  62. expect that Jesus's body would not be in

  63. that tomb and stay in that tomb even

  64. though he had told them several

  65. times and so they when they find it

  66. empty they're perplexed and then the

  67. angels appear to them and they're

  68. frightened i want to read some of that

  69. gospel passage again from Luke 24

  70. beginning in verse one luke tells us

  71. that on that first day of the week at

  72. early dawn they went to the tomb taking

  73. the spices they had prepared they had

  74. spent the Sabbath day preparing spices

  75. in devotion to Jesus but anticipating

  76. applying those spices to his dead body

  77. and seeing him no more alive in this

  78. world and they found the stone rolled

  79. away from the tomb and when they went in

  80. they did not find the body of the Lord

  81. Jesus while they were perplexed about

  82. this behold two men stood by them in

  83. dazzling apparel and as they were

  84. frightened and bowed their faces to the

  85. ground the men said to them "Why do you

  86. seek the dead among the living he is not

  87. here but is risen remember how he told

  88. you while he was still in Galilee that

  89. the Son of Man must be delivered into

  90. the hands of sinful men and be crucified

  91. and on the third day rise?" And they

  92. remembered his words

  93. suddenly the reality of the kingdom of

  94. heaven and its king confronted the

  95. worldly perspective and blew it

  96. away can the dead rise and live again

  97. can heavenly angels in dazzling apparel

  98. and color and glory appear and speak to

  99. people the Christian story and our faith

  100. gives a resounding yes and much more

  101. than that

  102. are you living according to that reality

  103. of the kingdom of heaven and the king of

  104. kings who reigns

  105. forever or are you living according to

  106. the reality of just this world what we

  107. see and feel and

  108. touch for all of us there is a reality

  109. that we have not yet seen or even

  110. accurately imagined that is going to

  111. blow us away when we encounter it

  112. wherever we are in our journey of faith

  113. as Christians or considering

  114. Christianity or exploring the reality of

  115. the kingdom of heaven and the glory of

  116. God and what he has prepared for us is

  117. going to blow us away it is so much more

  118. beyond what we can

  119. imagine in fact the apostle Paul who

  120. knew as much as anyone probably about

  121. that

  122. kingdom writes this about the reality of

  123. it he says in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1:8

  124. 1:8 about the rulers of his time he

  125. says,"None of the rulers of this age

  126. understood this for if they had they

  127. would not have crucified the Lord of

  128. glory but as it is written what no eye

  129. has seen nor ear heard nor the heart of

  130. man imagined what God has prepared for

  131. those who love him even those who love

  132. him have loved him for many years and

  133. pursued and sought him and been devoted

  134. to him haven't imagined the glory and

  135. the goodness of what God has prepared

  136. for his

  137. people paul goes on to say that these

  138. things God has revealed to us through

  139. his spirit

  140. the Christian life is a constant growth

  141. of revelation through the Holy Spirit of

  142. the kingdom of God of the of the truth

  143. and person of Jesus and all that he has

  144. done and is doing and we have the

  145. scriptures we have the testimony of

  146. faithful Christians through history and

  147. the presence of God himself and the Holy

  148. Spirit with us

  149. but we have not yet begun to glimpse the

  150. true glory of God and the kingdom of

  151. heaven and the power of the resurrection

  152. of

  153. Jesus that isn't just some historical

  154. event although it is that but is a

  155. present reality for us who believe and

  156. are saved and are being saved to the

  157. uttermost

  158. the angels at the tomb refer Jes refer

  159. the women who were there who are

  160. perplexed and now frightened to the very

  161. words of Jesus

  162. himself that he shared with them several

  163. times in the midst of his ministry and

  164. doing miracles and teaching and even

  165. raising the dead that the son of man

  166. would suffer and

  167. die and that on the third day he would

  168. rise

  169. again whether they didn't understand or

  170. they didn't believe him they now

  171. realize it's true and they remembered

  172. what he said and that revelation of the

  173. reality of his

  174. resurrection transformed their lives it

  175. makes them different people and then

  176. following his ascension and on Pentecost

  177. they receive the Holy

  178. Spirit and are filled with the power of

  179. that same resurrection

  180. these ladies they had followed Jesus

  181. they'd been devoted to him caring for

  182. him serving him and the disciples they

  183. had proven their courageous faith even

  184. the courage to stay at the crucifixion

  185. to follow him to the tomb to see where

  186. he's laid and then to go to that tomb to

  187. anoint his body with spices knowing that

  188. there were Roman soldiers assigned who

  189. would no doubt harass them and make

  190. their way

  191. hard but they were still blown away by

  192. the reality of the risen Christ and the

  193. glory of these angels

  194. when they heard the tale told by these

  195. ladies these

  196. eyewitnesses these ladies that they

  197. would know and

  198. trust the other apostles and the other

  199. disciples considered them hysterical

  200. considered the tale of what they had

  201. seen and heard to be just fantastic just

  202. an idol tale and they didn't

  203. believe it shows the contrast of the

  204. kingdom of heaven and what God has done

  205. in Jesus and what he does among us

  206. through the Holy Spirit through the body

  207. of Christ and his angels it continues to

  208. be in sharp contrast and conflict with

  209. this world and what we see and feel and

  210. touch that it is still hard to believe

  211. and to live according to this

  212. overwhelming reality of God's kingdom

  213. it's a theme of scripture definitely the

  214. book of Revelation is a revelation of

  215. this kingdom's reality and that it will

  216. last forever and that the king of kings

  217. Jesus will reign

  218. forever god is saying this is the

  219. reality this is the truth despite at the

  220. time the empire of

  221. Rome when you look around today is what

  222. you see all you think there is or is

  223. what you see and experience in this

  224. world so overwhelming that you can't get

  225. beyond it to the reality of God's

  226. kingdom is the cacophony of this world

  227. so loud that you can't listen for the

  228. voice of God saying "Jesus is alive he

  229. is risen he reigns forever and he's

  230. present with through the Holy Spirit and

  231. he is returning are the anxieties of

  232. this

  233. life so overwhelming that you can't

  234. experience that peace of Christ and the

  235. peace of his kingdom that is there for

  236. us can you believe in the risen Jesus

  237. can you believe in the presence of

  238. heavenly angels and their glory

  239. can you believe that Jesus came and died

  240. for your sins and rose again so that you

  241. might have victory over sin and death

  242. and the grave and that you might live

  243. forever with the father the son and the

  244. holy spirit in heaven a heavenly

  245. paradise that is beyond what we could

  246. even imagine do you live in the reality

  247. of this risen Lord and this

  248. kingdom that will surpass and outlast

  249. everything we

  250. see do you live in that reality of

  251. eternal life and eternal consequences

  252. for our faith or lack of faith in this

  253. world the reality of heaven and hell are

  254. going to blow people away

  255. it will confront and dissolve all the

  256. false images the delusions that we have

  257. our pride our

  258. vanity it will all come crashing

  259. down if we don't tune in to the kingdom

  260. of heaven and if we don't make it our

  261. passion and our goal to seek first the

  262. kingdom of heaven to seek the

  263. righteousness of heaven and to seek the

  264. king of heaven continually to know him

  265. and to live in the light of his kingdom

  266. and

  267. reality this is a time this is a day for

  268. believers to seek first the kingdom of

  269. God and his righteousness this is a time

  270. for us as we celebrate the risen Lord to

  271. keep our eyes on

  272. him and to seek that risen life and to

  273. let the things of this world the

  274. anxieties the temptations the pressure

  275. the lies and delusions just dissolve

  276. away because there is so much more to

  277. Jesus there is so much more than to the

  278. kingdom than we have experienced

  279. not too long ago well a couple years ago

  280. I was over at Foxy Locky and it was

  281. during one of the times probably between

  282. SCAD classes because it was packed with

  283. SCAD students and as I walked across the

  284. little lobby there I saw a young woman

  285. with a Citadel sweatshirt on and I went

  286. to the Citadel and I just walked by her

  287. and said "Hey that's where I went." And

  288. she said "Well that's where my dad

  289. went." And I thought to

  290. myself I thought to myself well her dad

  291. must be

  292. old to have a daughter in college and

  293. then it dawned on me wait a minute I

  294. have a daughter in

  295. college and I was confronted with that

  296. reality that wait a minute I'm old and

  297. so I asked well when did your dad

  298. graduate and she said 1991 and I said

  299. well that's where when I graduate and

  300. she said that he was he was in my

  301. company and the Citadel is divided up

  302. into companies and I said well that was

  303. my company and you know so she told me

  304. her dad's name and we were really good

  305. friends we were good friends and

  306. together all four years at the Citadel

  307. and a super wonderful man whom I would

  308. consider a good friend but I realized I

  309. hadn't seen him or spoken to him since

  310. about 30 years prior to that

  311. conversation and you know then again I

  312. was confronted with the reality of it's

  313. been a while since I

  314. graduated and I'm older than I had

  315. imagined but it also confronted me with

  316. this reality that that is true beyond

  317. just that relationship i have people

  318. whom I would consider really good

  319. friends people that I have loved in my

  320. life and are some of my favorite people

  321. that I have not seen or had a

  322. conversation with in 20 or 30 years

  323. this past December I had a conversation

  324. about an hour long on the phone

  325. reconnecting with a a man a good friend

  326. that I'd spent about three weeks three

  327. weeks with on a missionary trip during

  328. college and I hadn't spoken to him in 30

  329. years and I would have said "Oh I love

  330. this man he's a good friend of mine."

  331. And I realized I mean he had been

  332. through having two children he has he's

  333. a grandfather again he's old and

  334. uh and it confronted me with another

  335. reality that we can do the same to

  336. Jesus oh I believe in Jesus i love him i

  337. know

  338. him and we can fall

  339. into this comfort zone of complacency in

  340. our relationship with Jesus and think

  341. that we know him really well that we're

  342. really following him and we're good

  343. friends with him and we're seeking him

  344. to realize boy I haven't had an

  345. intimate relation or an intimate

  346. conversation and experience with

  347. Jesus in

  348. years and that is a reality that I think

  349. we need to examine in our lives are we

  350. growing in our knowledge and awareness

  351. of Jesus or have we just cruised in

  352. complacency and not grown not learn more

  353. about him not let him learn more about

  354. us

  355. some of us know him pretty well and have

  356. been Christians for a long time but for

  357. all of us there is so much more to know

  358. of this risen Lord there is so much

  359. goodness and

  360. love and mystery and excitement and joy

  361. in Jesus and in his kingdom than we have

  362. even glimpsed or had a touch of the

  363. experience

  364. so I want to encourage you no matter

  365. where you are in your relationship with

  366. the Lord renew your passion for seeking

  367. him and his kingdom and his

  368. righteousness because it is worth it

  369. just like these women when they come to

  370. the tomb and they're overwhelmed by the

  371. angels there is nothing else that

  372. matters at that time except that Jesus

  373. is

  374. alive and we see it as the other

  375. apostles and disciples learn that he's

  376. alive he becomes all that matters to

  377. them when Jesus appears to the two

  378. disciples on the road to Emmas later in

  379. Luke's gospel in chapter 24 he comes

  380. alongside him and they he doesn't reveal

  381. his identity to him he just asks him

  382. "What are you talking about?" And they

  383. say "Oh about Jesus of Nazareth he was a

  384. prophet he did miracles we had hoped

  385. that he was the Messiah but he was

  386. crucified." And so so now we're leaving

  387. that behind and going on with our lives

  388. and Jesus I think gently confronts and

  389. rebukes them he said to them "Oh foolish

  390. ones and slow of heart to believe all

  391. that the prophets have

  392. spoken was it not necessary that the

  393. Christ should suffer these things and

  394. enter into his glory?" And beginning

  395. with Moses and all the prophets he

  396. interpreted to them in all the

  397. scriptures the things concerning himself

  398. and later they would testify that their

  399. hearts burned within them during that

  400. conversation and then when Jesus broke

  401. bread with them they realized it was the

  402. risen

  403. Lord but I would imagine that for each

  404. one of us Jesus might give a gentle

  405. rebuke oh foolish one and slow of heart

  406. to believe all that has been written and

  407. spoken of in the scriptures oh foolish

  408. one and slow of heart to believe the

  409. testimonies of Christians sharing about

  410. me oh foolish one slow of heart to seek

  411. me to believe that I'm present with you

  412. that I love you that I move and act in

  413. your life

  414. oh foolish ones and slow of heart to

  415. believe that I have gone before you to

  416. prepare a place in a paradise that is so

  417. good that is so wonderful and so

  418. fulfilling that if you could grasp it it

  419. would be all that you focused on in this

  420. life with the exception of bringing many

  421. people with

  422. you later when Jesus does appear to the

  423. other disciples he comes into the room

  424. in Luke 30 Luke 24:36 and they're

    Luke 24:36

  425. talking about all of these things these

  426. two disciples have come back peter has

  427. seen the Lord and Jesus comes to them

  428. and he says "Peace to you." And he comes

  429. to give us peace even in the midst of

  430. his gentle rebukes he gives us peace not

  431. condemnation not

  432. punishment but peace always and as he

  433. gives them peace they're startled

  434. they're frightened they don't know what

  435. they see and Jesus again gives them a

  436. gentle rebuke why are you troubled and

  437. why do doubts arise in your hearts to

  438. these his friends why are you troubled

  439. why do doubts arise in your heart here I

  440. am see me touch me

  441. he might say something like that to each

  442. of us in our anxiety and our fear and

  443. our busyiness in our wonder of what will

  444. come maybe even in our grief of what has

  445. been what we've lost what we've suffered

  446. the trials that we've been through or

  447. are in or may experience he might say

  448. "Why are you troubled why do doubts

  449. arise in your heart see I am here i was

  450. dead and I behold I am alive see I am

  451. the living one i've overcome all of your

  452. sin i've overcome everything that you

  453. could suffer i've been through it like

  454. Father Brian preached on Saturday

  455. morning if you're going through hell

  456. he's been there if you're in darkness

  457. he's been there if you're in trials he's

  458. been through them all why are you

  459. troubled why do doubts arise in your

  460. heart this

  461. Jesus died on the cross out of love for

  462. you and to be with you forever and he

  463. has risen from the dead he is exalted at

  464. God's right hand and he is preparing a

  465. place for you that where he is you might

  466. be forever and that place is beyond what

  467. we could imagine what we could ask for

  468. it is

  469. better and that kingdom Jesus said is

  470. present

  471. here through his Holy Spirit through his

  472. presence the kingdom is here he is

  473. here to minister to us now and

  474. today if you seek him if you ask for him

  475. if you listen for him he will grant you

  476. knowledge of himself and the experience

  477. of his presence

  478. i'm going to close with what Paul wrote

  479. to the church in Colossians in light of

  480. these

  481. truths he said in chapter 3:1 "If you

  482. then have been raised with Christ seek

  483. the things that are above where Christ

  484. is seated at the right hand of God set

  485. your minds on things that are above not

  486. things that are on earth for you have

  487. died and your life is hidden with Christ

  488. in God when Christ who is your life

  489. appears then you also will appear with

  490. him in glory glory beyond what we could

  491. ever imagine glory that is so

  492. good i encourage you set your mind on

  493. that glory set your mind on the person

  494. of Christ and seek him with all of your

  495. heart invite the Holy Spirit to come

  496. into your life and make him known to

  497. you amen
