  1. Let us pray.

  2. Oh father, we invite the presence of

  3. your holy spirit to speak through me and

  4. to speak to all of us, applying your

  5. word to our hearts and to our lives with

  6. power and conviction for your purposes

  7. and for your glory. Amen.

  8. >> Please be seated.

  9. So, as I I said, we are continuing our

  10. sermon series on the four pillars of our

  11. vision as a church. And today's pillar

  12. is mission. Even though that may be out

  13. of order, but today being sanctity of

  14. life, I wanted the emphasis on mission

  15. to coincide with the emphasis on

  16. sanctity of life, which is in itself a

  17. mission.

  18. Christ Church Anglican seeks to be a

  19. gospel centered congregation in the

  20. Anglican tradition where worship is

  21. central, catechizus is p pervasive, life

  22. together is nurtured and mission

  23. extended from Thomas Square to the city

  24. of Savannah,

  25. the dasis and to the world wherever God

  26. may call us. We are a congregation

  27. committed to mission

  28. and we are engaged in a myriad of

  29. different missional activities both

  30. locally and abroad. And so today I'm not

  31. going to emphasize doing more. I think

  32. that as a church, as individuals, we are

  33. doing missional work. What I want to

  34. emphasize are elements of our mission so

  35. that our mission will be fruitful and

  36. impactful according to God's purposes

  37. for the mission of our church and us as

  38. individuals. And the elements I want to

  39. emphasize as being part of our mission

  40. are the Holy Spirit, his presence and

  41. his power and the grace of God. Grace

  42. for ourselves and grace for others. And

  43. then the word of God expressed in the

  44. gospel of Jesus Christ. Those three

  45. elements. And I don't want to make

  46. anyone feel pressure to do anything and

  47. want to relieve anyone of guilt or

  48. condemnation about feeling like you

  49. haven't done enough or should do more.

  50. What I want to encourage is invitation

  51. and reception of the Holy Spirit, his

  52. power, his might, the grace of God, and

  53. to receive and to become a vessel for

  54. God's gospel, the good news of Jesus

  55. Christ. And I want to start with the Old

  56. Testament prophecy of Zechariah.

  57. Zechariah was a prophet who ministered

  58. to the people of Israel after the exile

  59. in Babylon and their return to

  60. Jerusalem.

  61. Say in 586 BC uh 100 years plus after

  62. the northern kingdom of Israel had been

  63. attacked by Assyria and those Israelites

  64. living there had been scattered

  65. throughout the Assyrian Empire. In 586,

  66. the southern kingdom of Judah was

  67. attacked by Babylon and many of the

  68. residents there were taken as captive

  69. and exiles into Babylon. And 70 years

  70. later, according to the prophecy given

  71. to Jeremiah, God raised up a king Cyrus

  72. of the Mes and Persia who enabled the

  73. exiles to return to Jerusalem. And they

  74. were given the charge by God to rebuild

  75. the temple that had been destroyed by

  76. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. And

  77. by destroyed, he had torn it down. He

  78. had burned it. It had become a mound of

  79. rubbish and destruction.

  80. And so, Zechariah ministered to those

  81. exiles who had returned to Jerusalem and

  82. who faced this enormous and seemingly

  83. impossible task of building a second

  84. temple.

  85. Zechariah is

  86. receiving a vision from an angel who

  87. awakens him at night. And the book of

  88. Zechariah is a series of these visions.

  89. And in chapter 4, he is awakened. He

  90. sees an angel who shows him a vision of

  91. the lamp and of the two olive trees. And

  92. he asks him, "Zechariah, what do you

  93. see?"

  94. And when Zechariah asks, "What are

  95. these?"

  96. The angel answers him with with the

  97. meaning and impact of that vision. And

  98. he says in verse five

  99. or verse six, the angel said to him, the

  100. meaning of this vision is this is the

  101. word of the Lord to Zarabel or Zerabel.

  102. Not a biblical name that I've ever known

  103. anyone to be named,

  104. but a significant figure who had become

  105. the governor of Jerusalem and of the

  106. people who had returned from exile. So

  107. he was the governor who was charged with

  108. rebuilding this temple.

  109. And so the word of the Lord to Zerabel

  110. Zerbabel

  111. is not by might nor by power but by my

  112. spirit says the Lord of hosts.

  113. This project is not going to be done

  114. because he can gather an army of workers

  115. who are strong and have the wherewithal

  116. to try to pile up this mound of

  117. destruction into a temple. It's not

  118. going to be accomplished by his wisdom

  119. or by the resources of the emperor

  120. Cyrus.

  121. It's not going to happen by magic. It's

  122. going to happen by the spirit of the

  123. Lord. And this is the spirit of the Lord

  124. of hosts who is the Lord of heaven's

  125. armies. He is the sovereign Lord over

  126. all creation. He is the one who created

  127. all and who sustains all. And he has

  128. given them this charge. And while the

  129. the people in e who had returned from

  130. exile don't have all the resources that

  131. Solomon had when he built the first

  132. temple who had a whole nation and peace

  133. with all the kingdoms around who

  134. supplied him with everything.

  135. This would happen only by the spirit of

  136. the Lord.

  137. And then the vision goes on and the

  138. angel says after this, "Who are you, oh

  139. great mountain be before Zerabel? You

  140. shall become a plain and he shall bring

  141. forth the top stone amid shouts of grace

  142. grace to it." There was a mountain of

  143. destruction that had been left by

  144. Nebuchadnezzar when he destroyed that

  145. first temple. It is a literal mountain.

  146. It's also a figurative mountain of the

  147. impossible task that the governor had

  148. been charged with by God.

  149. And the angel of the Lord says that this

  150. mountain shall become a plane. It shall

  151. be leveled. The rubbish shall be

  152. removed. The task shall be accomplished.

  153. And it shall be finalized by Zerabel

  154. bringing the cornerstone, the top stone,

  155. and finishing this project and declaring

  156. grace, grace over it. The mission of God

  157. given to Zarabel and to Joshua the high

  158. priest. This enormous task

  159. would be accomplished by the spirit of

  160. God and by his grace. And what was true

  161. of this enorm enormous task of building

  162. the second temple is true of the mission

  163. that God has called us to as a church or

  164. to you as individuals.

  165. It is done by the Holy Spirit of God and

  166. by his grace. It takes away the pressure

  167. of us. It takes away us having to will

  168. things to happen. It takes away the

  169. guilt that we can subject ourselves to.

  170. It takes away us having to project or

  171. compel others to do a work. The mission

  172. of God depends on his Holy Spirit and it

  173. is empowered by his Holy Spirit and it

  174. is by grace

  175. and it becomes the mission becomes a

  176. witness of God's grace for us.

  177. The passage that we read from the book

  178. of Acts demonstrates how this is

  179. fulfilled through Jesus Christ.

  180. In in the the book of Acts, it begins

  181. with Jesus after his death and

  182. resurrection spending 40 days with his

  183. disciples. It says that he taught them

  184. about the kingdom of God during that

  185. time and then he ascended into heaven.

  186. And then after 10 days, we see in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  187. chapter 2, the disciples are together

  188. praying and God pours out his Holy

  189. Spirit on them on the day of Pentecost

  190. and Peter preaches that day. And it says

  191. that 5,000 became believers. And it

  192. would seem like of those 5,000, they

  193. were all Jewish people who became

  194. believers in Jesus. And then the church

  195. grew through the ministry of those Jews

  196. to other Jews.

  197. And it seems like that that's what God

  198. was going to do. And in Acts chapter 10,

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  199. we find Peter praying on the roof of

  200. someone's house. And God shows him a

  201. vision three times of animals and things

  202. that he could eat, but he never has

  203. because they were considered unclean.

  204. And God says, "Kill and eat, Peter." And

  205. he says, "No, Lord. I've never eaten

  206. anything unclean." And God rebukes him

  207. and says, "Don't call unclean what I've

  208. called clean." And simultaneously, God

  209. had been sending an angel to a Roman

  210. centurion named Cornelius, who seemed

  211. like a good man, seeking God. And God

  212. said, "Call for Peter," who's staying at

  213. Simon the Tanner's house. I think that's

  214. it, by or Simon's house by the sea. And

  215. he sends his men to go get Peter. And

  216. Peter is instructed by God to go with

  217. him. And so we find our text with Peter

  218. showing up at this Roman centurion's

  219. house. And as he's welcomed into this

  220. house, he greets them with not the

  221. warmest greeting.

  222. He shares with them basically, you know,

  223. us Jews, we don't really like you

  224. Gentiles and we don't associate with you

  225. and it's against our law for me to even

  226. be here because I've considered you

  227. unclean.

  228. And so you can imagine, oh,

  229. but then Peter says, but God taught me

  230. not to call anything unclean that he has

  231. called clean. So here I am.

  232. And you know, we've heard the cliche,

  233. showing up is half the battle. Well, in

  234. this case, I think that's really true.

  235. Peter, showing up was half the battle.

  236. It was the challenge for him because he

  237. had to cross a barrier that had been

  238. constructed over many centuries between

  239. the Jews and the Gentiles. And God took

  240. him right across it and said, "You go to

  241. this man's house." And in verse 34 it

  242. just says, "So Peter opened his mouth."

  243. Here I am. And he starts talking and he

  244. says, "Truly I understand that God shows

  245. no partiality. But in every nation,

  246. anyone who fears him and does what is

  247. right is acceptable to him. As for the

  248. word that he sent to Israel, preaching

  249. good news of peace through Jesus Christ,

  250. he is Lord of all."

  251. And I think this is an significant

  252. statement when it comes to our mission.

  253. As for the word,

  254. preaching good news of peace through

  255. Jesus Christ, our mission must be a

  256. vessel for the good news of peace

  257. through Jesus Christ. And then the text

  258. has in parentheses, he is Lord of all.

  259. It's like a reminder. He's not just my

  260. Lord. He's not just the Lord of the

  261. Jews. He's not just the Lord of the

  262. people that I like and have already

  263. accepted him. He is the Lord of all. And

  264. the good news of peace is for all who

  265. will hear. And he goes on, Peter does in

  266. Acts 10:37, "You yourselves know what

    Acts 10:37

  267. happened throughout all Judea, beginning

  268. from Galilee after the baptism that John

  269. proclaimed, how God anointed Jesus of

  270. Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with

  271. power. He went about doing good and

  272. healing all who were oppressed by the

  273. devil, for God was with him." This is

  274. the ministry of Jesus that Peter is

  275. describing. God anointed him with the

  276. Holy Spirit and with power. And even

  277. that phrase as I as I read it, it

  278. redundant.

  279. If you're anointed with the Holy Spirit,

  280. if you have the Holy Spirit, you have

  281. the power of God. But Peter wants to

  282. elaborate to demonstrate that Jesus had

  283. not only the spirit, but he was

  284. demonstrating the power of God. and he

  285. went about doing good and healing those

  286. oppressed by the devil. And this is our

  287. mission. It it is to receive the Holy

  288. Spirit, the presence and power of God

  289. and to go about doing good,

  290. to go about healing those oppressed by

  291. the devil. And now Jesus, when we look

  292. at the gospels, he delivered people who

  293. were possessed by the devil.

  294. And some of us may do that at times. But

  295. the work of healing those oppressed by

  296. the devil is speaking the good news of

  297. God's grace and love to those who are

  298. oppressed by the fallenness of this

  299. world and by the work of the devil that

  300. has lied to them, that has tricked them,

  301. that has led them into sin and deception

  302. and has made them oppressed. It's

  303. healing those who are in despair and

  304. depression, who have no hope, who have

  305. never learned that God loves them, and

  306. so they feel unloved. All of this is

  307. oppression by the devil

  308. who led this world into sin. And the

  309. work of Jesus, by the Holy Spirit, by

  310. the grace of God is to bring healing

  311. through that gospel message and through

  312. that anointing.

  313. And then Peter says, 'We are witnesses

  314. of all that he did in the country of the

  315. Jews in Jerusalem. They put him to death

  316. by hanging him on a tree, but God raised

  317. him on the third day and made him to

  318. appear, not to all people, but to us who

  319. had been chosen by God as witnesses, who

  320. ate and drank with him after he rose

  321. from the dead. And he commanded us to

  322. preach to the people and to testify that

  323. he is the one appointed by God to judge

  324. the living and the dead. To him all the

  325. prophets bear witness that everyone who

  326. believes in him receives forgiveness of

  327. sins through his name. And that's the

  328. grace of the gospel. And you notice

  329. Peter says God or Jesus rose from the

  330. dead and he didn't appear to everyone

  331. but he appeared to us and he commanded

  332. us to go forth and preach. Today not

  333. everyone knows Jesus. Not everyone has

  334. received Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

  335. Not everyone has had someone lead them

  336. to Jesus by sharing the gospel. Jesus

  337. hasn't appeared in visions and dreams to

  338. everyone to show that he is Lord. But he

  339. has saved us. He has made himself known

  340. to us.

  341. And we have to be the witness to those

  342. who don't yet know him by sharing with

  343. them that Jesus is Lord. and all who

  344. believe in him receive forgiveness of

  345. sins and to warn that he is the one

  346. appointed to judge the living and the

  347. dead. And there will come a time when we

  348. all stand before him.

  349. So receive him into your life, him who

  350. loves you and receive the Holy Spirit.

  351. And so Peter essentially shows up. He

  352. opens his mouth and he just shares with

  353. this household of Romans and a Roman

  354. centurion what he knows what he knows

  355. about Jesus. And it's really simple.

  356. Jesus is Lord. Jesus died for our sins

  357. and rose again. And all who believe in

  358. him receive forgiveness of sins and are

  359. saved.

  360. And while he shares that message, verse

  361. 44 says that while Peter was still

  362. saying these things, the Holy Spirit

  363. fell on all who heard,

  364. all who heard the word. And this is so

  365. significant for our mission. That the

  366. word of God, the gospel of Jesus Christ

  367. is the power of God for salvation for

  368. all who believe. And the power comes

  369. from the Holy Spirit who attends that

  370. word and confirms it to people just like

  371. we see here as Peter preached the word

  372. and as they are hearing it and it sounds

  373. like they are hearing it and having

  374. faith in it, the Holy Spirit falls on

  375. them. Which is why we need the Holy

  376. Spirit. We need to be vessels and

  377. messengers of the word of God. And we

  378. need to receive grace and give grace

  379. because this is what changes lives. And

  380. we can do that while helping people,

  381. while sharing with people, while

  382. supporting people and doing practical

  383. things for their need. But the mission

  384. of the church is not apart from the Holy

  385. Spirit and the grace of God and the

  386. gospel of Jesus Christ.

  387. when the earlier in the book of Acts in

  388. chapter 4 some of the disciples had been

  389. arrested Peter and John for preaching

  390. even for healing a person they'd been

  391. arrested they had been told don't talk

  392. about this anymore don't say anything

  393. else about Jesus and when they gather

  394. together and share with the other

  395. disciples what has been happening they

  396. all gathered and prayed together and

  397. this is what they pray in in the midst

  398. of that persecution and in the midst of

  399. what God was doing. This is in Acts 4

  400. 29. They're praying and they pray, "Now,

  401. Lord, look upon their threats and grant

  402. to your servants to continue to speak

  403. your word with all boldness, while you

  404. stretch out your hand to heal, and signs

  405. and wonders are performed through the

  406. name of your holy servant, Jesus."

  407. And then when they had prayed, the place

  408. in which they were gathered together was

  409. shaken, and they were all filled with

  410. the Holy Spirit and continued to speak

  411. the word of God with boldness.

  412. This was the priority for the mission of

  413. the church that God would help them to

  414. share the word to help them share the

  415. good news of Jesus and to make Jesus

  416. known to people and that while they're

  417. going out and doing that that God would

  418. stretch out his hand to continue that

  419. work of God by healing signs, wonders,

  420. essentially by making himself known in

  421. people's lives through the Holy Spirit.

  422. And then they went out and did that by

  423. God's grace. And that is what God is

  424. calling us to do as a church through

  425. many different ways of expression. Some

  426. hands-on helping, caregiving, some your

  427. vocation is your mission. And it's

  428. important for you to recognize that your

  429. vocation, your job. Some of you are

  430. students and it's the same.

  431. That is not apart from your mission as a

  432. Christian. And so in your job, in your

  433. studies, in your caregiving, in the work

  434. that you do for family, invite the Holy

  435. Spirit.

  436. Receive the grace of God and make the

  437. word and the gospel of Jesus part of

  438. that. Our lives are all one in Christ

  439. and we don't have separate comm

  440. compartments of our lives. So God, you

  441. may have you working in a capacity that

  442. takes all of your energy right now.

  443. That's your mission. Don't do it apart

  444. from the Holy Spirit and the grace of

  445. God or the word of God.

  446. And finally, the gospel message.

  447. Jesus says to his followers, "Do not

  448. think that I've come to bring peace to

  449. the earth." This is in Matthew 10:34. He

    Matthew 10:34

  450. says, "I've not come to bring peace, but

  451. a sword. For I've come to set a man

  452. against his father, and a daughter

  453. against her mother, and a

  454. daughter-in-law against her

  455. mother-in-law. And a person's enemies

  456. will be those of his own household.

  457. Whoever loves father or mother more than

  458. me is not worthy of me. And whoever

  459. loves son or daughter more than me is

  460. not worthy of me. And whoever does not

  461. take his cross and follow me is not

  462. worthy of me. Whoever finds his life

  463. will lose it, and whoever loses his life

  464. for my sake will find it. This is the

  465. cost of disciplehip. This is the the

  466. discipline required in disciplehip.

  467. Jesus says, "I've not come to bring

  468. peace, but a sword." And when Jesus is

  469. pictured in the book of Revelation with

  470. a sword, that sword is the word that

  471. comes forth from his mouth. It It's the

  472. sword that the author of Hebrews calls a

  473. double-edged sword. It's the sword that

  474. the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6

  475. describes as the word of God.

  476. The word of God is a double-edged sword

  477. because it cuts us and it disciplines us

  478. and requires us to deny ourselves, but

  479. it also is sharp to those who hear. And

  480. so, some will hear the word of God and

  481. they'll receive it. Some will hear and

  482. they'll ponder. Some will hear and they

  483. will reject the word of God and they

  484. will reject us as the messengers. And

  485. that's the separation that Jesus is

  486. talking about. It's a separation because

  487. of the word and the testimony of Jesus.

  488. And it's a separation because of the

  489. life that Jesus's followers are called

  490. to live in contrast and in witness to

  491. and against the way of this world.

  492. But there there's an emphasis in Jesus's

  493. teaching that while we are witnesses to

  494. him, it it is a witness. It is a

  495. ministry that centers on reception and

  496. embrace of others. It is not a ministry

  497. that pushes people away with the word of

  498. God. It is a ministry that calls people

  499. with the word of God. It is a ministry

  500. that extends the arms of Christ who as

  501. our prayer in in the book of common

  502. prayer says who extended his arms and

  503. stretched them out on the hardwood of

  504. the cross so that everyone might come

  505. within the reach of his saving embrace.

  506. Some people won't receive that

  507. invitation and push us away. But our

  508. ministry by the Holy Spirit, by the

  509. grace of God, and for the word of God is

  510. to be one of reception. Listen to what

  511. Jesus goes on to say in the gospel.

  512. Whoever receives me and whoever re

  513. whoever receives you receives me and

  514. whoever receives me receives him who

  515. sent me. The one who receives a prophet

  516. because he is a prophet will receive a

  517. prophet's reward. And the one who

  518. receives a righteous person because he

  519. is a righteous person will receive a

  520. righteous person's reward. And whoever

  521. gives one of these little ones even a

  522. cup of cold water because he is a

  523. disciple, truly I say to you, he will by

  524. no means lose his reward.

  525. The ministry that Jesus calls us to, the

  526. mission is one of receiving each and

  527. every person to whom we are called to

  528. minister as if he or she was Christ him

  529. or hers himself. And that's the sanctity

  530. of life. It is recognizing and

  531. acknowledging that each person from

  532. conception to the end of life is the

  533. image of God and the likeness of God and

  534. one for whom Jesus dies and one if they

  535. have not receive salvation

  536. Jesus is wooing Jesus is drawing to

  537. receive that salvation. In Luke's

  538. gospel, Jesus says something similar

  539. about this ministry of receiving others.

  540. Whether they are other Christians or

  541. whether they are unbelievers, whether

  542. they are like us or very different from

  543. us. And this is one of those times where

  544. his disciples are arguing about who's

  545. greatest. A and God, help us from

  546. falling into this trap in the church

  547. where we argue with one another about

  548. who's greatest, about who's got the

  549. right preference, about who's got the

  550. right way of doing everything, about

  551. whose position is most important. Jesus

  552. responds to that. This is in Luke 9:46.

    Luke 9:46

  553. And then in 48 he responds,

  554. "But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of

  555. their hearts, took a child and put him

  556. by his side and said to them, "Whoever

  557. receives this child in my name receives

  558. me, and whoever receives me receives him

  559. who sent me. For he who is least among

  560. you is the one who is great."

  561. We are to be vessels of God's love and

  562. to express that love and warmth to those

  563. around us.

  564. We are to cross over the the bridges and

  565. the divides that God calls us to cross

  566. over for the sake of ministry and for

  567. the sake of sharing his love and his

  568. good news of grace. And that's our

  569. mission. And we do that in multiple ways

  570. as God inspires and leads us

  571. individually and as a church.

  572. And there's a wonderful promise that as

  573. we do these, as we receive others in his

  574. name,

  575. we will by no means lose our reward.

  576. Because a as we are acting as his

  577. witnesses and vessels, we too are

  578. drawing closer and closer to him. And

  579. the same promise that he made to

  580. Abraham, Abraham, I am your very great

  581. reward. He is our reward. And the more

  582. we identify him, the more that we know

  583. him.

  584. And so as we engage in mission,

  585. let's emphasize

  586. the three elements. The Holy Spirit and

  587. his power, the grace of God for

  588. ourselves and for others. And the word

  589. of God, the gospel of Jesus Christ, it

  590. is the power of God for salvation. And

  591. let us be those who receive others in

  592. his name because we recognize that he

  593. died for each and every person. And so

  594. we are eager to receive them. And let's

  595. be a church on mission

  596. by those things by the power of God. So

  597. let me pray for us.

  598. And Father, we acknowledge that the work

  599. that we do for your kingdom is not by

  600. our might, not by our power, but by your

  601. Holy Spirit. And that it is by your

  602. grace and for your grace to abound.

  603. So Lord, we pray that you would fill

  604. each of us with your Holy Spirit, that

  605. you would inspire and lead us as

  606. individuals, as families, and as a

  607. church to the work and mission

  608. particularly that you have called us to.

  609. And God through it may be your may we be

  610. your witnesses and messengers sharing

  611. the gospel of grace through Jesus Christ

  612. and being eager to receive others in

  613. your name to be drawn to you to be

  614. blessed by you and to know your love.

  615. Amen.
