  1. Good morning everyone.

  2. >> Hey Simeon. Welcome to worship this

  3. morning. It's great to see you here and

  4. I want to welcome our guests and

  5. visitors. I'm Father Craig Stevens, one

  6. of the priests and directors here. And

  7. today is the third Sunday of the season

  8. of Epiphany. It is also the third Sunday

  9. in our sermon series on the four pillars

  10. of our vision which are in your order of

  11. worship on the back inside page. Uh this

  12. week's emphasis will be on katakesis.

  13. So the readings and the sermon will

  14. focus on that ministry, that emphasis of

  15. katakesis. So let's pray and set our

  16. hearts and minds on seeking the Lord and

  17. receiving what he has for us today.

  18. Father, we come to you through Jesus

  19. Christ who is the way, the truth, and

  20. the life for us and for all people.

  21. And Lord, we pray that he might be

  22. glorified in our midst, through our

  23. worship of you in spirit and in truth,

  24. through our ministry toward one another

  25. by that same Holy Spirit and by our

  26. participation in the sacraments. Lord,

  27. come and be mighty in the midst of us as

  28. we offer and surrender ourselves to you

  29. that we might be ministered to and

  30. transformed into his image. In whose

  31. name we pray, amen.

  104. >> Let us pray.

  105. Almighty God, to you all hearts are

  106. open, all desires known, and from you no

  107. secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of

  108. our hearts by the inspiration of your

  109. Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love

  110. you and worthily magnify your holy name

  111. through Christ our Lord. Amen. Jesus

  112. said, "You shall love the Lord your God

  113. with all your heart, with all your soul,

  114. and with all your mind." This is the

  115. first and great commandment, and the

  116. second is like it. You shall love your

  117. neighbor as yourself. On these two

  118. commandments depend all the law and the

  177. the glory of his marvelous works, who

  178. lives and reigns with you and the Holy

  179. Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

  180. >> Amen. Please be seated for the reading

  181. of Holy Scripture.

  182. A reading from Proverbs

    Proverbs 4 chapter mention

  183. chapter 4, beginning with verse 20.

  184. My son, be attentive to my words.

  185. Incline your ear to my sayings.

  186. Let them not escape from your sight.

  187. Keep them within your heart.

  188. For they are life to those who find them

  189. and healing to all their flesh.

  190. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for

  191. from it flow the springs of life.

  192. Put away from you crooked speech and put

  193. devious talk far from you.

  194. Let your eyes look directly forward and

  195. your gaze be straight before you.

  196. Ponder the path of your feet. Then all

  197. your ways will be sure.

  220. But they are like the winds away from

  222. Therefore,

  223. we shall not be able to stand [singing]

  232. A reading from Jude beginning with verse

  233. 17.

  234. But you must remember, beloved, the p

  235. the predictions of the apostles of our

  236. Lord Jesus Christ.

  237. They said to you, "In the last time,

  238. there will be scoffers following their

  239. own ungodly passions.

  240. It is these who cause divisions,

  241. worldly people devoid of the spirit.

  242. But you, beloved, building yourselves up

  243. in your most holy faith and praying in

  244. the Holy Spirit,

  245. keep yourselves in the love of God,

  246. waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus

  247. Christ that leads to eternal life.

  248. And have mercy on those who doubt.

  249. Save others by snatching them out of the

  250. fire.

  251. To others, show mercy with fear, hating

  252. even the garment stained by the flesh.

  253. Now to him who is able to keep you from

  254. stumbling and to present you blameless

  255. before the presence of his glory with

  256. great joy. To the only God, our Savior,

  257. through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory,

  258. majesty, dominion, and authority

  259. before all time and now and forever.

  260. Amen.

  261. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

  262. At this time, the children are invited

  263. to come forward and to follow the

  264. crucifer downstairs to little church.

  265. And as all of our children gather, let

  266. us pray God's blessing upon them.

  267. Watch over your children, O Lord, as

  268. their days increase. Bless and guide

  269. them wherever they may be. Strengthen

  270. them where they stand. Comfort them

  271. discouraged or sorrowful. Raise them up

  272. when they fall in their hearts. May your

  273. peace which passes understanding abide

  274. all the days of their life. Through

  275. Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  311. >> The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

  312. according to St. John.

  313. >> Glory to you Christ.

  314. >> Our gospel reading is taken us from the

  315. 8th chapter starting at the 31st verse.

  316. So Jesus said to the Jews who had

  317. believed him, "If you abide in my word,

  318. you are truly my disciples, and you will

  319. know the truth, and the truth will set

  320. you free." They answered him, "We are

  321. offspring of Abraham and have never been

  322. enslaved to anyone. How is it then you

  323. say you will become free?"

  324. Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I

  325. say to you. Everyone who practices sin

  326. is a slave to sin. The slave does not

  327. remain in the house forever. The son

  328. remains forever." So if the son sets you

  329. free, you are free indeed. The gospel of

  330. the Lord.

  331. >> Praise to you, Christ.

  332. >> Let us pray.

  333. Father, we pray that your grace would

  334. abound to us. That your Holy Spirit

  335. would inspire my words and apply them to

  336. all of our hearts with power and

  337. conviction that we might know your will

  338. and that we might grow in knowledge of

  339. you and in love. We ask in Jesus' name.

  340. Amen.

  341. >> Amen.

  342. >> Please be seated.

  343. I was thinking as we approached a sermon

  344. on kateesus, how yesterday morning, how

  345. much happened here at the church and at

  346. the Whitfield Center. We had morning

  347. prayer here at 8:00

  348. and then prayer at the Whitfield Center

  349. that we call intercessory and revival

  350. prayer from 8:30 to about 10:00. And

  351. while those were happening, Katherine

  352. Jones Ministries, Katherine and Michael

  353. and others were providing a hot meal for

  354. any of the homeless and needy who came

  355. by. And as soon as those were done, the

  356. flower guild had a flower workshop right

  357. here among different ages of ladies. It

  358. was all ladies. It doesn't have to be.

  359. And you can see the fruit of their labor

  360. all around us this morning. And after uh

  361. the prayer group got finished at

  362. Whitfield Center, a group called Alpha

  363. Bears, which is a mentoring program by

  364. the men in the Alpha Fi Alpha, one of

  365. our ministry partners at the Whitfield

  366. Center, they mentor young boys uh just

  367. in life and in character. That happened

  368. on Saturday morning. And then even

  369. before noon, I saw Tina was here with a

  370. young voice student teaching him how to

  371. sing. And all of this happened before

  372. noon right here and at the Whitfield

  373. Center. And all of that is catechizus.

  374. All of that, the study and reading of

  375. scripture, the prayers, the fellowship,

  376. the mentoring and interaction among the

  377. body of Christ for service and for

  378. giving, all of that is catechizus. And

  379. it continued this morning with our 8:00

  380. worship and then the multitude of Bible

  381. studies and teachings that we had this

  382. morning. We had adult Sunday school

  383. teaching about the fruit of the Holy

  384. Spirit and Father Brian and Peter were

  385. leading practicing the way the Whitfield

  386. Center while uh you that included adults

  387. and youth while middle school and

  388. younger children and even gospel play

  389. for the little ones and confirmation

  390. class downstairs and now we gather

  391. together to worship and to hear from

  392. God. All of this is what katakesis is.

  393. The phrase kateesus is uh literally

  394. means to echo the teaching or to like

  395. repeat back what is learned. But it's a

  396. disciplehip and ministry demon of

  397. demonstration of the Christian life and

  398. teaching for the purpose of bringing

  399. about the full conversion and ongoing

  400. sanctification of the people of God and

  401. those inquiring and seeking about

  402. becoming a person of God. And it's done

  403. by Christians who are continuing in

  404. their own catechesus, their own

  405. instruction in the faith, their own

  406. formation, and also their own practice

  407. of ministry as a Christian. It's both

  408. learning about the Christian faith and

  409. living the Christian life together and

  410. correctly done. It's a holistic and

  411. comprehensive approach to the Christian

  412. life, to disciplehip.

  413. It it's everything that Jesus meant when

  414. he said come follow me. And you can see

  415. in the inside back cover of your order

  416. of worship the vision of Christ Church

  417. Anglican that in that is Christ Church

  418. Anglican seeks to be a gospel- centered

  419. congregation in the Anglican tradition

  420. where worship is central kateesus is

  421. pervasive life together is nurtured and

  422. mission extended from Thomas Square to

  423. the city of Savannah the dasis and the

  424. world wherever God may call us. And that

  425. phrase, I love how God inspired this

  426. among the founders of Christ Church

  427. Anglican when they left the Episcopal

  428. Church. Katechesus is pervasive.

  429. And that's what is happening on Sunday

  430. mornings. It happened on Saturday

  431. morning and so many other days of the

  432. week. Kateesus is pervasive among our

  433. congregation and people and we hope

  434. among the body of Christ. It touches on

  435. and infiltrates every area of our life

  436. together. And that's catechesus. That's

  437. following Jesus and the disciplehip that

  438. he calls us to. It's not

  439. compartmentalized. It's not just one

  440. area of our life. It is everything.

  441. This is indicated in the readings today.

  442. The first one being u from the fourth

  443. chapter of Proverbs being thought to

  444. have been written taught by Solomon the

  445. king of Israel who had all the wisdom

  446. knowledge and understanding that God

  447. gave to him. And you can see in verse 20

  448. of chapter 4 it begins with an address

  449. to my son. He writes my son be attentive

  450. to my words. Incline your ear to my

  451. sayings. Let them not escape from your

  452. sight. Keep them within your heart, for

  453. they are life to those who find them and

  454. healing to all their flesh. Keep your

  455. heart with all vigilance, for from it

  456. flow the springs of life. Put away from

  457. you crooked speech and put devious talk

  458. far from you. Let your eyes look

  459. directly forward and your gaze be

  460. straight before you. Ponder the path of

  461. your feet. Then all your ways will be

  462. sure. Do not swerve to the right or

  463. left. Turn your foot away from evil.

  464. At the core, this is a message

  465. about a life, about a teaching that is

  466. taught and it's also taught by those who

  467. hear and those who are the recipients of

  468. this which is catechizus.

  469. It can't only be taught. It can't only

  470. be instructed. It must be lived and

  471. caught by those who are the recipients.

  472. in this case between a father and a son.

  473. And there's a generational movement

  474. within kateesus from the elder to the

  475. younger as there is in this writing. But

  476. in the Christian faith, there's also a

  477. movement from the spiritual father or

  478. grandfather, from those mature in Christ

  479. and in the faith to the spiritual child,

  480. the spiritual son or daughter, those who

  481. are newer and more immature in the

  482. faith. And that is regardless of age or

  483. biological relationship. It it's a

  484. movement of mentoring, of teaching from

  485. the mature to the lesser mature.

  486. And there are, as you all know, very ne

  487. nefarious and malevolent schemes that

  488. come about from the spiritual forces of

  489. evil, from the world, and that resonate

  490. with our own flesh to instill division

  491. among generations, within families, and

  492. within our community. We know the enemy

  493. tries to create rebellion and resentment

  494. among younger people while uh instilling

  495. mistrust and a standoffishness even a

  496. criticism or condemnation by the older

  497. generations of youngers. All to create a

  498. divide and that is definitely a scheme

  499. the enemy tries to bring into churches

  500. as well. But katakesis is an element

  501. within the church that overcomes that.

  502. And there's no tricks to overcoming that

  503. scheme of the enemy to create division.

  504. It is just a matter of pressing through

  505. in prayer and in determination by the

  506. power of the Holy Spirit to bind

  507. ourselves together with people of all

  508. generations within the body of Christ.

  509. When it comes to katakesis,

  510. the cliche, you have to walk the walk

  511. and talk the talk is definitely true and

  512. it is proven true through the ages. We

  513. cannot only talk the talk of

  514. disciplehip, of scripture, of the

  515. Christian faith. We have to walk the

  516. walk of it also completely in our lives.

  517. And none of us do it perfectly. We have

  518. all failed and depend on God's mercy and

  519. him picking us back up again. But we see

  520. the failure and the consequence of

  521. failure in Solomon's life. He had all of

  522. this wisdom, knowledge, and

  523. understanding from God. Great skill and

  524. talents in so many areas to write such

  525. things as these proverbs which are true.

  526. But then he left the course of his own

  527. teaching and he engaged in idolatry,

  528. worship of other gods, definitely

  529. indulged the flesh in any way that we

  530. could imagine. And the consequences were

  531. his son Rayabone when he became king

  532. lost the kingdom because he followed

  533. foolishness instead of wisdom. And that

  534. is the pattern if katakesis is only

  535. verbal and not does not represent a life

  536. lived in accord with scripture and the

  537. Christian faith.

  538. This is evident in the the first psalm

  539. which is our psalm today. Psalm number

  540. one,

  541. the psalmist writes, "Blessed is the man

  542. who has not walked in the counsel of the

  543. ungodly, nor stood in the way of

  544. sinners, and has not sat in the seat of

  545. the scornful, but his delight is in the

  546. law of the Lord, and on his law will he

  547. meditate day and night. And he shall be

  548. like a tree planted by the waterside

  549. that will bring forth his fruit in due

  550. season. His leaf also shall not wither.

  551. and look, whatever he does, it shall

  552. prosper. As for the ungodly, it is not

  553. so with them. But they are like the

  554. chaff which the wind scatters away from

  555. the face of the earth. Therefore, the

  556. ungodly shall not be able to stand in

  557. the judgment, neither the sinners in the

  558. congregation of the righteous. For the

  559. Lord knows the way of the righteous, but

  560. the way of the ungodly shall perish. In

  561. both the Proverbs and the Psalm, there's

  562. an emphasis not only on learning and

  563. gaining knowledge of God's teaching, but

  564. also in walking

  565. that faith out. There's an emphasis on

  566. how we walk, the path that we take,

  567. where we stand, and where we sit. Is it

  568. among the godly? It is in the pres is it

  569. in the presence of the Lord and his word

  570. and those who are like-minded in that

  571. direction. Or do we do do we come to

  572. church on Sunday and maybe hear and even

  573. gain knowledge but then the rest of our

  574. lives we are on a path of

  575. self-indulgence or sinfulness or are we

  576. being corrupted by other messages in the

  577. world.

  578. Katechesus requires that our path is in

  579. accord with the teaching of scripture

  580. and the way of the Lord.

  581. And it you can see that this requires uh

  582. full frontal effort day and night

  583. meditating on the word day and night day

  584. and night. In Deuteronomy there's an

  585. exhortation to parents to teach and talk

  586. about the word and the ways of God on

  587. the way in the homes. That's what

  588. catechesus is. It occurs everywhere and

  589. it's lived

  590. in in in my life life growing up. You

  591. know, I was fortunate and blessed that

  592. we went to church every Sunday, but we

  593. really left it there as far as the

  594. teaching and the life, the Christian

  595. life uh that was lived. It was taught

  596. and we worshiped on Sunday and

  597. thankfully, you know, we received the

  598. message of the gospel, but then we left

  599. it there and we did our best to live the

  600. Christian life, but without the ongoing

  601. catechesus. I didn't receive that until

  602. I got to college. And then there's two

  603. men that I remember to this day who came

  604. onto campus and engaged me in a

  605. disciplehip relationship. One was named

  606. Larry Sherbandi. He was with navigators

  607. and he came to campus twice a week. One

  608. for like a large group fellowship and

  609. teaching, but another for a small group

  610. disciplehip. I remember it was me and

  611. two other uh students. And I can, this

  612. is a while ago. I think I have my 30th

  613. year reunion. No, it's my 35th reunion

  614. coming up next year. That's how long

  615. it's been. And that was freshman year.

  616. And I can remember some of the exact

  617. conversations we have. I can remember

  618. the scriptures that were taught. That's

  619. how powerful catechesus is. That's how

  620. powerful it is when a mature Christian

  621. makes the effort and takes the time to

  622. catechize and to teach and disciple

  623. others. Another man was named Harry

  624. Brown. He was an AM African Methodist

  625. Episcopal pastor. And we were in

  626. Charleston. He came from Buford every

  627. Monday evening from the time I was a

  628. sophomore until the time I graduated.

  629. And I think Missy came to some of those.

  630. He would come every Monday, whether

  631. there were two of us, 10 of us, 15 of

  632. us, and he would share and teach the

  633. gospel. And I can remember this was my

  634. first introduction to a real passion

  635. about the gospel and a charisma and and

  636. an emphasis on living this word and this

  637. scripture. And I can remember him. I can

  638. see him in the classroom that many years

  639. ago. And these were both men who not

  640. only came and taught, but they lived the

  641. life. I remember after I graduated

  642. college, Missy and I got married and we

  643. were living in Charleston and I was out

  644. for a walk, a run around Colonial Lake

  645. and this would have been at least a year

  646. after graduation and I came across Larry

  647. and his wife sitting on a bench and said

  648. hi to him and it it wasn't two or three

  649. sentences into this conversation with

  650. him and I hadn't seen him since probably

  651. my sophomore year.

  652. He asked me, "Are you still having a

  653. quiet time?" [laughter]

  654. And thanks be to God, by God's grace, I

  655. said, "Yes, because of you." And that's

  656. katakizes. That's the power of it for

  657. both the teacher and the student. And

  658. this is what contributes to fulfilling

  659. God's plan for his people. That first

  660. comes up in Exodus 19:5. This is when he

    Exodus 19:5

  661. has brought the people of Israel out of

  662. Egypt and he is teaching them through

  663. Moses about his statutes and his way.

  664. And he says through Moses to tell the

  665. people, "Now therefore, if you will

  666. indeed obey my voice and keep my

  667. covenant, you shall be my treasured

  668. possession among all peoples. For all

  669. the earth is mine, and you shall be to

  670. me a kingdom of priests and a holy

  671. nation." Now, this is a particular

  672. message for his people that he has

  673. called you that the genealogy that

  674. started with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

  675. and now all these that he brought out of

  676. Israel. But then you'll also notice it

  677. is for the purpose of all the nations

  678. and all the peoples in the earth. He has

  679. called a people and he is forming and

  680. shaping them to be his possession among

  681. all the peoples in the earth to be a

  682. kingdom of priests and a holy nation to

  683. make him known to make his way known. So

  684. it required for them to be a peculiar

  685. and particular kind of people that

  686. contrasted all the other nations of the

  687. world so that when they were seen, when

  688. they were heard,

  689. there would be a differentiation so that

  690. the people would know there was

  691. something about God and his people that

  692. was different. This continues into the

  693. New Testament where it is through Christ

  694. that now his people can fulfill this

  695. vision of God's kingdom and his people

  696. in the world. Peter writes this in his

  697. second letter, second Peter 2:9. He's

    2 Peter 2:9

  698. writing to Christians now.

  699. But you are a chosen race, a royal

  700. priesthood, a holy nation, a people for

  701. his own possession, that you may

  702. proclaim the excellencies of him who

  703. called you out of darkness into his

  704. marvelous light. He He is now fulfilling

  705. this work through Christ among those who

  706. have been saved by grace through faith

  707. and become God's people in Christ. That

  708. there's the particular message again to

  709. these people, but it is also for

  710. everyone. You are a chosen race, a royal

  711. priesthood, a holy nation, a people for

  712. his own possession, that you may

  713. proclaim the excellencies of him who

  714. called you out of darkness into his

  715. marvelous light. We are gathered

  716. together. We are shaped by God through

  717. his word and through his holy spirit and

  718. through our life together so that by

  719. word and by deed we proclaim his

  720. excellencies and we demonstrate a life

  721. lived in the light that is in sharp

  722. contrast to the darkness that is lived

  723. by those outside of Christ that by our

  724. light shining they would come in to that

  725. same light in his kingdom.

  726. This happens through kateesus.

  727. And our prayer book, the book of common

  728. prayer that we use has an exhortation

  729. that the bishop gives to the confirms

  730. before he confirms them. And in it are

  731. the elements of katakesis. And so this

  732. is what the bishop would say to those

  733. who have gone through preparation to be

  734. confirmed.

  735. He will say, and we'll hear this in May

  736. when he comes again. Dearly beloved, it

  737. is essential that those who wish to be

  738. confirmed are received in this church

  739. publicly confess Jesus Christ as their

  740. Lord and Savior, become his disciples,

  741. know and affirm the nine creed in the

  742. Lord's Prayer and the Ten Commandments,

  743. and have received instruction in the

  744. Holy Scriptures of the Old and New

  745. Testaments and the Catechism of the

  746. Church. God's grace is imparted in

  747. baptism through which we are made God's

  748. children by adoption and given the Holy

  749. Spirit. By the power of the spirit

  750. manifested in gifts and fruit, we are

  751. enabled to be God's people for the sake

  752. of the world. You can see in that the

  753. formation that occurs through katakesus

  754. in the individual. But then as that

  755. individual becomes mature and equipped

  756. with the fruit and gifts of the Holy

  757. Spirit, he or she is enabled to

  758. demonstrate being God's daughter or son

  759. for the sake of the world.

  760. We can do that together and

  761. individually,

  762. but in order to do that, we must reject

  763. sin. We must reject the devil's

  764. teachings and the corruption of the

  765. world

  766. because otherwise our witness is

  767. undermined.

  768. This is what Jude is speaking to when he

  769. writes to the early Christians. He's

  770. writing to them how to be God's people

  771. for the sake of the world. Because Jesus

  772. died not only for those in this church,

  773. but for those outside every church

  774. today. He died for them. And he's

  775. calling and shaping us to be a people

  776. who know him and who love him and are

  777. formed in his image for the sake of

  778. those who don't yet know him. This is

  779. what Jude writes in what was read today,

  780. verses 17 and 25.

  781. And he contrasts this message with how

  782. the world is living and how those who

  783. are following other evil spirits are

  784. living. He says, "But you must remember,

  785. beloved, the predictions of the apostles

  786. of our Lord Jesus Christ. They said to

  787. you, "In the last time, there will be

  788. scoffers following their own ungodly

  789. passions. It is these who cause

  790. divisions and worldly people devoid of

  791. the spirit. But you, beloved, building

  792. yourselves up in the most holy faith and

  793. praying in the Holy Spirit, keep

  794. yourselves in the love of God, waiting

  795. for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ

  796. that leads to eternal life. And have

  797. mercy on those who doubt. Save others by

  798. snatching them out of the fire. To

  799. others, show mercy with fear, hating

  800. even the garment stained by the flesh.

  801. I I love the emphasis on mercy in this

  802. exhortation to Christians. It reminds us

  803. that we are never not dependent and

  804. desperate for the mercies of God. No

  805. matter how far we progress in our

  806. sanctified lives, no matter how far we

  807. uh mature as Christians, we won't be

  808. perfect and we will stumble and make

  809. mistakes and we will always depend on

  810. the mercies of God and that keeps us

  811. humble and also maintains us as a vessel

  812. for those mercies to others.

  813. But what he encourages us and what

  814. Kateesus includes is building ourselves

  815. up in the most holy faith and praying in

  816. the Holy Spirit, keeping ourselves in

  817. the love of God,

  818. waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus

  819. Christ that leads to eternal life and

  820. teaching others to do the same, young or

  821. old.

  822. Each of us sadly have ungodly passions.

  823. And it's easy to point out and reject

  824. the ungodly passions of other people.

  825. But the ungodly passions that tempt us

  826. are so subtle.

  827. We we can tend to easily justify them or

  828. paint them as righteous or think that

  829. they're not that bad. Or what is too

  830. dangerous today and so seductive is to

  831. take comfort that our ungodly passions

  832. that we may indulge in now and then are

  833. secret. They're inconspicuous. We're

  834. just on our own indulging in these

  835. passions and it doesn't hurt anyone. No

  836. one even knows.

  837. That's a danger of our culture in our

  838. time with the all the media devices we

  839. have.

  840. There is no sin

  841. that is safe. Jesus teaches us in the

  842. gospel that is read today, anyone who

  843. sins is a captive to sin. And we know

  844. from Paul's writing that the wages of

  845. sin is death, no matter if it's in

  846. secret or public. And we see too many

  847. sins today by Christians that they

  848. engaged in in secret even as they

  849. continued engaging in ministry. And then

  850. those become public and it undermines

  851. the whole witness of the church because

  852. if we're saying one thing at all and

  853. living a different thing, then what's

  854. the point in listening at all? So Jude

  855. is exhorting the church to reject such

  856. ungodly passions and to reject scoffers.

  857. And we have to wonder, what am I being

  858. tempted to scoffing at or what am I

  859. scoffing at?

  860. >> [crying]

  861. >> or

  862. what divisions am I causing that are

  863. ungodly because I've neglected God's

  864. word. I've neglected the way of the

  865. cross. I've neglected a prayerful

  866. life and praying about the things that

  867. come up. I've started pointing the

  868. fingers at others instead of being

  869. merciful and forgiving them.

  870. So, we have to build ourselves up in the

  871. holy faith. pray in the Holy Spirit,

  872. keep ourselves in the love and mercy of

  873. God

  874. and then we can reach out to save others

  875. and that is always the outcome of

  876. Kateesus or one of them is the

  877. expression of God's love and salvation

  878. to others.

  879. And Jude closes his letter by pointing

  880. us to the ultimate goal of our

  881. catechesus. It is to pre be prepared to

  882. stand before the one who is judge to

  883. stand before the one who is king of

  884. kings and lord of lords. And the

  885. katakesus is preparing us for that by

  886. helping us to live under his lordship

  887. and under his sovereignty. Which is why

  888. that call of disciplehip demands that we

  889. deny ourselves, take up our cross and

  890. follow him. That by the work of the Holy

  891. Spirit in the body of Christ, we might

  892. become like him. Listen to the way Jude

  893. ends his letter in verse 24. Now to him

  894. who is able to keep you from stumbling

  895. and to present you blameless before the

  896. presence of his glory with great joy to

  897. the only God our savior through Jesus

  898. Christ our Lord be glory, majesty,

  899. dominion and authority before all time

  900. now and forever. Amen. our life

  901. together, our individual lives

  902. must aim toward Jesus and the glory of

  903. God. And so we set ourselves before him

  904. every day, even now as our king.

  905. And we recognize that it is only by him

  906. that we can keep from stumbling, that we

  907. can keep from falling, that we can keep

  908. from turning away. And so we hold on to

  909. him and we bring others into his

  910. presence.

  911. combining their hands with Jesus's hands

  912. to walk and follow him.

  913. So what is left for Kate Kateesus?

  914. What's left is for us to be participants

  915. in the work of Kateesus. what is left

  916. for us to participate with Jesus and the

  917. Holy Spirit in our own lives having

  918. those quiet times

  919. with scripture with prayer with

  920. self-denial and saying no to temptation

  921. but then also doing it together with

  922. others where we are catechized where we

  923. catechize others in those same spiritual

  924. disciplines and all of that leading

  925. toward mission leading toward outreach

  926. leading toward the sharing of the gospel

  927. for the sake sake of the world, those

  928. for whom Christ died just like us.

  929. So, I encourage you, there's so many

  930. offerings that our church has. If you

  931. don't receive our weekly newsletter,

  932. there's a QR code in the inside of your

  933. order of worship. Receive it and see

  934. what ministries, what spiritual

  935. disciplines, what areas of kateesus is

  936. God calling you to engage in if you're

  937. not already. And if there's not

  938. something that fits into your schedule,

  939. let Father Brian and I know and we'll

  940. make it happen because this is what our

  941. church is called to pervasive

  942. catechesus. So let's pray and ask God

  943. for help.

  944. Lord, we ask you to for help in

  945. catechesus that we each would be

  946. catechized in the faith and that we

  947. would each be those who catechize

  948. others, Lord.

  949. And Father, we pray that as you build us

  950. up in the most holy faith and in the

  951. Holy Spirit and in your love and mercy

  952. that you will help us to be a witness to

  953. be a kingdom of priests, not only

  954. serving Christ, but also serving the

  955. world around us.

  956. That your purpose and desire for each

  957. person, salvation and eternal life would

  958. be fulfilled. Help us Lord we ask

  959. through Jesus Christ. Amen.

  960. Please stand.

  961. Let us affirm our faith in the words of

  962. the nine creed.

  963. We believe in one God, the Father, the

  964. Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of

  965. all that is visible and invisible.

  966. We believe in one Lord

  967. >> Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of

  968. God, eternally begotten of the Father,

  969. God from God, light from light, true God

  970. from true God, begotten not made, of one

  971. being with the Father, through him all

  972. things were made. for us and for our

  973. salvation. He came down from heavenc was

  974. incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the

  975. Virgin Mary and was made man for our

  976. sake. He was crucified under Pontious

  977. Pilot.

  978. >> He suffered death and was buried. On the

  979. third day he rose again in accordance

  980. with the scriptures.

  981. >> He ascended into heaven and is seated at

  982. the right hand of the father. He will

  983. come again in glory to judge the living

  984. and the dead and his kingdom will have

  985. no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit

  986. of life who proceeds from the father and

  987. son with the father and son and

  988. glorified

  989. through the prophets. We believe in one

  990. holy Catholic apostolic church. We

  991. acknowledge one baptism for the

  992. forgiveness of

  993. the resurrection of the dead and the

  994. life of the world to come. Amen.

  995. Let us pray for the church and for the

  996. world saying here our prayer

  997. for the peace of the whole world and for

  998. the well-being and unity of the people

  999. of God.

1000. Lord in your mercy here our pray

1001. >> for Steve our archbishop Julian our

1002. provincial dean Alex our bishop and for

1018. evangelizing. We pray for Stacy Russell

1019. and all who go with them that they would

1020. be fruitful in their ministry.

1021. Father, we also give you thanks for joy

1022. and all of those that came together in

1023. the call of the spirit to lay the

1024. foundation for the four pillars of

1025. worship, catechis, mission, and life

  1026. together.

1027. Little did they know that the time they

1028. spent years ago would bear such fruit in

1029. the life of this congregation.

1030. And as we continue to lead spiritfilled

  1031. and spiritled lives,

1032. may we be mindful that our truth may be

1033. born tomorrow, next week, next month or

1034. years from now. But we do it all in the

  1035. name of Jesus.

1036. Lord in your mercy here our pray

1037. >> for all those who proclaim the gospel at

1038. home and abroad and for all who teach

  1054. servants.

1096. >> Lord we pray that you would foster unity

  1097. in our church

1098. in our city among Christian believers.

1099. You take away any spirit of division

1100. or self-righteousness or pride of life

1101. that puffs us up and instead fill us

1102. with your spirit, with your love. I pray

1103. that you would give us the grace to

1104. consider the needs of others more

  1105. important than ourselves

1106. and to follow in the way of Christ. May

1107. we be a people who instruct one another

1108. in the way of Jesus.

1109. Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers

1110. for Jesus Christ's sake, our only

1111. mediator and advocate, who lives and

1112. reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one

1113. God, now and forever. Amen.

  1114. >> Amen.

1115. >> Now, let us humbly confess our sins to

1116. Almighty God, kneeling as you are able.

1117. Most merciful God, we confess that we

1118. have sinned against you in thought,

1119. word, and deed by what we have done and

1120. by what we have left undone. We have not

1121. loved you with our whole heart. We have

1122. not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

1123. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

1124. >> For the sake of your son Jesus Christ,

1125. have mercy on us and forgive us

1126. >> that we may delight in your will and

1127. walk in your ways to the glory of your

  1128. name. Amen.

1129. Almighty God, our heavenly father, who

1130. in his great mercy has promised

1131. forgiveness of sins to all those who

1132. sincerely repent and with true faith

1133. turn unto him, have mercy upon you,

1134. pardon and deliver you from all your

1135. sins, confirm and strengthen you in all

1136. goodness, and bring you to everlasting

1137. life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  1138. >> Amen.

1139. >> And now hear the word of God to all who

1140. truly turn to him. Come to me all who

1141. labor and are heavy laden and I will

1142. give you rest. God so loved the world

1143. that he gave his only begotten son that

1144. whoever believes in him should not

1145. perish but have eternal life. The saying

1146. is trustworthy and deserving of full

1147. acceptance that Christ Jesus came into

1148. the world to save sinners. And if anyone

1149. sins, we have an advocate with the

1150. father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He

1151. is the propitiation for our sins and not

1152. for ours only but also for the sins of

1153. the whole world. Please stand.

1154. >> The peace of the Lord be always with

1177. point you to the flower guild. I want to

1178. encourage you to take your order of

1179. worship and check out some of the events

1180. that we have. On page 21, there is a QR

1181. code to find out about more of them. And

1182. also, like I said earlier, if you're not

1183. receiving the newsletter, please sign up

1184. to do that. The one of the events coming

1185. up that is is registration is required

1186. is the rehydrate conference February

  1187. 19th through the 21st. That's Thursday

1188. night, Friday, and Saturday morning.

1189. That's going to be a conference for uh

1190. it it's put on for the Anglican Church

1191. of North America from all over and it is

1192. is emphasizing living life in the

1193. spirit. And we have three speakers who

1194. are all Anglican bishops lined up. Thaad

1195. Barnum, Daryl Fitzwater, and Marcio and

  1196. I can't remember Marcio Mirrors. He's

1197. from Brazil. And then also Clancy Nixon

1198. and Mark Eldridge who are both Anglican

1199. priests will be participating as well.

1200. So it's going to be a great conference,

1201. but we do need registration by February

  1202. 12th.

1203. The other events um you are all welcome

1204. to come to. I do want to highlight the

1205. one on page 22, the big announcement

1206. with the purple that our deacon and

1207. former summer intern Drew Ibach, he's in

1208. the back, will be ordained to the

1209. priesthood on Sunday, February 22nd in

  1210. the evening at 6:00 and we'll have a

1211. reception following in at the Whitfield

1212. Center. So, Bishop Alex will be here for

1213. Rehydrate and then we'll be here to

1214. ordain Drew. That's really exciting. be

1215. praying for Drew as that approaches.

1216. And as we approach the offering and the

1217. Lord's table, remember the words of

1218. Jesus. It is more blessed to give than

  1219. to receive.

1273. who took on our mortal flesh to reveal

  1288. [singing and music]

  1289. [music]

1290. I invite you to kneel as we continue in

  1291. prayer.

1292. Holy and gracious Father, in your

1293. infinite love, you made us for yourself.

1294. And when we had sinned against you and

1295. become subject to evil and death, you in

1296. your mercy, sent your only son, Jesus

1297. Christ, into the world for our

1298. salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the

1299. Virgin Mary, he became flesh and dwelt

1300. among us. In obedience to your will, he

1301. stretched out his arms upon the cross

1302. and offered himself once for all that by

1303. his suffering and death, we might be

1304. saved. By his resurrection, he broke the

1305. bonds of death, trampling hell and Satan

1306. under his feet. As our great high

1307. priest, he ascended to your right hand

1308. in glory that we might come with

1309. confidence before the throne of grace.

1310. On the night he was betrayed, our Lord

1311. Jesus Christ took bread and when he

1312. given thanks, he broke it and gave it to

1313. his disciples, saying, "Take, eat. This

1314. is my body which is given for you. Do

1315. this in remembrance of me."

1316. Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the

1317. cup and when he given thanks, he gave it

1318. to them, saying, "Drink this all of you,

1319. for this is my blood of the new

1320. covenant, which is shed for you and for

1321. many, for the forgiveness of sins.

1322. Whenever you drink it, do this in

  1323. remembrance of me.

1324. Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of

1346. to face. All this we ask through your

1347. son Jesus Christ. By him and with him

1348. and in him in the unity of the Holy

1349. Spirit. All honor and glory is yours

1350. almighty father now and forever. Amen.

1351. And now, as our savior Christ has taught

1352. us, we are bold to pray. Our Father, who

  1353. art in heaven,

1354. >> be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will

1355. be done on earth as it is in heaven.

1356. Give us this day our daily bread. And

  1357. forgive us our trespasses

1358. as we forgive those who trespass against

1359. us. And lead us not into temptation, but

1360. deliver us from evil. For thine is the

1361. kingdom and the power and the glory

  1362. forever and ever. Amen.

1373. own righteousness, but in your abundant

1374. and great mercies. We are not worthy so

1375. much as to gather up the crumbs under

1376. your table. But you are the same Lord,

1377. whose character is always to have mercy.

  1378. Therefore, gracious Lord,
