  1. Let us pray.

  2. Lord Jesus, we thank you that you have

  3. called us friends. As your friends and

  4. as your sons and daughters, we ask you

  5. to come and make yourself known to us

  6. and manifest yourself among us even now,

  7. granting to us your Holy Spirit of

  8. wisdom and revelation to know you

  9. better. And God, I pray that you do such

  10. a work among us that we would be greater

  11. friends to you and greater friends to

  12. one another. It's through your name that

  13. we pray. Amen. Please be seated.

  14. So, this is the concluding sermon of our

  15. four-part sermon series on our four

  16. pillars of our vision. And you can see

  17. those on page 23 of your order of

  18. worship. And you can see our vision the

  19. second paragraph down. Christ Church

  20. Anglican seeks to be a gospel- centered

  21. congregation in the Anglican tradition

  22. where worship is central, catechizus is

  23. pervasive, life together is nurtured and

  24. mission extended from Thomas Square to

  25. the city of Savannah, the dasis and the

  26. world wherever God may call us.

  27. As a congregation, we are committed to

  28. life together. And life together for the

  29. body of Christ is more than mere

  30. association. Our social acquaintances,

  31. our social ties, like just hanging out

  32. with one another. In the biblical

  33. theology and in the kingdom of God,

  34. life together is communion in Christ and

  35. communion with each other in and through

  36. Christ. Life together entails strong

  37. partnerships and fellowship as brothers

  38. and sisters in Christ. Our bonds in

  39. Christ are the basis and strength of our

  40. relationships.

  41. As we are each born into God's family,

  42. adopted through Christ, receiving the

  43. spirit of adoption, the Holy Spirit, we

  44. are adopted not only as his sons and

  45. daughters, but we are adopted as

  46. brothers and sisters with each other.

  47. We belong to Christ and to each other

  48. starting with our spouses and our

  49. nuclear family, working outwards. God

  50. has brought us together as brothers and

  51. sisters in Christ. And he has called us

  52. to this body of Christ to serve one

  53. another. And we can see from the

  54. readings today just those that life

  55. together in the body of Christ includes

  56. all the other elements of our vision.

  57. worship, mission, catechesus, all of

  58. these we do together and we develop our

  59. relationships and friendships with one

  60. another. Our vision of life together in

  61. Christ and pursuing his kingdom is part

  62. of his work among us. The work of the

  63. father, the son, and the holy spirit and

  64. requires our faithful obedience and our

  65. surrender to him. These mark our

  66. Christian life together centered on God

  67. above all and the priority of the

  68. Christian life.

  69. This is what God is bringing about. It's

  70. the fulfillment of Jesus's promise when

  71. he said in John 12:32,

    John 12:32

  72. "When I am lifted up from the earth, I

  73. will draw all people to myself."

  74. And I always pray for spouses and those

  75. engaged, those entering into marriage,

  76. that Christ would draw them each closer

  77. to himself. And in doing so, he draws

  78. them closer to each other as well. And

  79. that applies to our life together as a

  80. as a church, as a congregation, that we

  81. all want to be drawn closer to Christ.

  82. And as we engage in that and surrender

  83. to him, we will draw closer to each

  84. other, too. We can't have one without

  85. the other.

  86. Life together includes two seemingly

  87. contradicting contradictory movements

  88. that are in Christ and only in Christ

  89. are they compatible. This is the

  90. movement of Christ drawing us all to

  91. himself, drawing us together as a body

  92. of Christ, a body of believers where we

  93. grow closer to each other.

  94. And at the same time, Christ is sending

  95. us out into the world to make disciples

  96. of all nations, of all peoples. Like he

  97. says at the end of Matthew's gospel,

  98. go into all the world. And at the same

  99. time, he's drawing us together as one in

  100. him. These two movements are constantly

  101. occurring among Christians, among

  102. believers. And sometimes in the church

  103. life, they can seem to be in tension in

  104. tension with each other because we get

  105. to know each other so well and our

  106. relationships can develop and grow

  107. strong and it seems like we're just

  108. right where God wants us and then oh

  109. man, someone else comes into the doors.

  110. We may not even know them. They might be

  111. very different from us.

  112. They may not know how to act in church.

  113. But that is exactly what God is doing.

  114. That's exactly what life together in the

  115. body of Christ is. It's drawing closer

  116. to each other and at the same time

  117. constantly being sent out to reach those

  118. who do not yet know him and are

  119. strangers to Christ and strangers to us.

  120. This is a vision I think of that Jesus

  121. summarizes very succinctly when he says

  122. in Matthew 8:11. This vision that many

    Matthew 8:11

  123. will come from the east and west and

  124. recline at table with Abraham, Isaac,

  125. and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. This

  126. is God's vision of life together. It's

  127. not exclusive.

  128. He's drawing everyone into it. All those

  129. who will believe, all those who will

  130. receive the gospel are born again into

  131. God's family. And to each church, he

  132. calls people to be rooted and planted so

  133. they can grow in their faith among other

  134. Christians who are drawing closer to

  135. Christ themselves.

  136. I think this is a vision that Isaiah has

  137. in Isaiah 25:6-9

    Isaiah 25:6–9

  138. that was read. It's one of these visions

  139. that the prophet has that is already

  140. happening yet is not yet fully

  141. fulfilled. It won't be fully fulfilled

  142. until Jesus returns and his kingdom is

  143. fulfilled completely. But this is what

  144. is happening among his people. Uh this

  145. is what Isaiah writes in his vision on

  146. the mountain of the Lord of hosts. On

  147. this mountain, the Lord of Hosts will

  148. make for all peoples a feast of rich

  149. food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich

  150. food full of marorrow, of aged wine

  151. well-refined.

  152. And he will swallow up on this mountain

  153. the covering that is cast over all

  154. peoples, the veil that is spread over

  155. all nations. He will swallow up death

  156. forever. And the Lord God will wipe away

  157. tears from all faces, and the reproach

  158. of his people he will take away from all

  159. the earth. For the Lord has spoken. It

  160. will be said on that day, "Behold, this

  161. is our God. We have waited for him that

  162. he might save us. This is the Lord. We

  163. have waited for him. Let us be glad and

  164. rejoice in his salvation."

  165. The Lord is making a feast for all

  166. peoples. Even though Isaiah is

  167. prophesying to the people of Israel,

  168. this vision, this promise of God is for

  169. all peoples. He doesn't exclude any type

  170. of people from his body. He died for all

  171. the sins of the world. But in this

  172. vision, there's this promise that the

  173. Lord God will wipe away tears from all

  174. faces.

  175. And there are tears. There's mourning

  176. and lament. There's grief. There's

  177. trials and tribulations in our life

  178. together.

  179. And God calls us to one another and to

  180. love one another to help comfort and

  181. figuratively to wipe away those tears

  182. sometimes literally to wipe away the

  183. tears from one another.

  184. He also says that he will take away the

  185. reproach from his people.

  186. And one of the beautiful works of God

  187. within the body of Christ is he takes

  188. away reproach that people carry that we

  189. carry. You could call it shame, guilt,

  190. the burdens, the self-consciousness that

  191. can drive us to stay away from people,

  192. to not be vulnerable and genuine and

  193. transparent with people. These are the

  194. things that the devil also uses to try

  195. to isolate us and ostracize us and tells

  196. us you don't belong among those people

  197. because you're not like them. Because if

  198. they knew the truth about you, they

  199. wouldn't want you around.

  200. The truth is is that God among his

  201. people removes that shame. He removes

  202. the reproach that separates us from one

  203. another through the blood of Jesus,

  204. through the forgiveness of sins, and

  205. through the body of Christ's constant

  206. confirmation of forgiveness and renewal.

  207. He binds us together to encourage one

  208. another. This is part of each of us

  209. becoming a new creation and all of us

  210. together becoming a new creation in this

  211. world.

  212. And likewise, we together

  213. rejoice just like God promises that all

  214. of those who are gathered at his table

  215. at this feast will say together,

  216. "Behold, this is our God. We've waited

  217. for him that he might save us. This is

  218. the Lord. We've waited for him." Let us

  219. be glad and rejoice in his salvation. We

  220. need each other to remind us to say this

  221. together that we are saved. We are a

  222. saved people. We can be glad and rejoice

  223. in God's salvation because we have it

  224. now. It's not fully developed yet. It's

  225. not fully lived out, but we are saved

  226. people.

  227. And in the rest of the world, those

  228. outside the body of Christ, that's not

  229. true. So when we come together and live

  230. life together, we need to hear the

  231. gospel from one another. when we are

  232. feeling down, when we've made mistakes,

  233. when we don't when we don't feel saved,

  234. we need life together with others who

  235. will say, "You are saved. You have

  236. eternal life." That that fear of death,

  237. it's been swallowed up. It hasn't been

  238. destroyed completely yet, but you don't

  239. have to fear.

  240. We can rejoice now and be glad in his

  241. salvation.

  242. I think this is part of what Paul writes

  243. in his letter to the Romans in chapter

  244. 12 verse1 15 when he's writing to an

  245. audience that has great differences.

  246. They have conflicts. They have

  247. divisions. And to all of them he is

  248. writing that they are one in the body of

  249. Christ. And he says to the Jews and the

  250. Gentiles together in that church in

  251. Rome, rejoice with those who rejoice.

  252. Weep with those who weep. Live in

  253. harmony with one another.

  254. And that's life together in the body of

  255. Christ. It's not all sunshine and

  256. lollipops, although it is sometimes,

  257. but it is also weeping with those who

  258. weep and mourning with those who mourn

  259. and being a presence of comfort and

  260. encouragement and a reminder of the

  261. eternal life that we have when the

  262. weight and trials of this world weigh us

  263. down.

  264. And we know that we all have reasons for

  265. weeping at times. We all have we reasons

  266. for rejoicing at times and they're

  267. happening concurrently every day.

  268. I love uh the psalm Psalm 34 1-9 and

  269. particularly verses 3 through5.

  270. It reminds me that the Christian life is

  271. not an individual life. It's not and

  272. cannot be a life lived in isolation. And

  273. sometimes I think we can get that in

  274. mind because our life in this this time

  275. and this context can be so

  276. individualistic.

  277. And I definitely made this mistake

  278. after college when I was still growing

  279. up in the faith thinking that this is

  280. about me. The promises of God, what the

  281. scripture says, it's about me and me

  282. getting this for myself. But that's very

  283. contrary to the actual message of

  284. scripture, which is that it is about God

  285. bringing together a people and

  286. empowering and equipping those people

  287. with blessings to bless one another. And

  288. the psalmist reminds us of that when in

  289. verse three he says, "Oh, praise the

  290. Lord with me. Let us magnify his name

  291. together." A and if there could be any

  292. one sum of how we live life together,

  293. this may be it. Oh, praise the Lord with

  294. me. Let us magnify his name together.

  295. It's to him that we point

  296. it. It's to him that we encourage and

  297. move one another. He goes on to say, "I

  298. sought the Lord and he heard me. He

  299. delivered me out of all my fears.

  300. They looked unto him and were made glad,

  301. and their faces were not ashamed." As we

  302. live life together, we are encouraging

  303. and hopefully pointing one another to

  304. look unto him

  305. and to become glad in his presence. The

  306. the the way the ESV, the English

  307. Standard Version translates verse 5, it

  308. says, "Those who look to him are

  309. radiant."

  310. Those who look to him are radiant. And

  311. we as we live together and to encourage

  312. one another to look to him. It's through

  313. him and it's through him who is the

  314. light of life that we become full of

  315. light that we become radiant. That we

  316. are made glad and that our faces are not

  317. ashamed.

  318. Through our life together we remind one

  319. another and by accepting one another by

  320. loving one another. Though none of us

  321. are perfect,

  322. we assure one another that we don't have

  323. to be ashamed. We don't have to be

  324. afraid that you might find out who I

  325. really am and I might find out who you

  326. really are and reject you. God calls us

  327. together and as we look to him, we

  328. receive forgiveness. We receive

  329. acceptance, not only from him, but from

  330. one another.

  331. One of the devil's main tools against

  332. people in the body of Christ is this

  333. drive toward ostracism.

  334. When we look to him together, it

  335. overcomes that. And this is exactly one

  336. of the ways how we serve one another is

  337. by pointing each other toward Jesus,

  338. toward eternal life, toward his

  339. acceptance of us, and assuring

  340. that is true through our own deeds of

  341. accepting one another.

  342. the

  343. chapter in Paul's first letter to the

  344. Corinthians chapter 12 where he talks

  345. about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. He's

  346. describing life together and he's

  347. describing the gifts and empowerment of

  348. the Holy Spirit that are given to each

  349. believer as not just being for that

  350. person but for the body of Christ. And

  351. Paul goes to great lengths to talk about

  352. how we are a body and we are each

  353. members of that body. And here in verse

  354. 4 of 1 Corinthians 12, he said, "There's

  355. a variety of gifts, but it's the same

  356. spirit, and there are varieties of

  357. service, but the same Lord, and there

  358. are varieties of activities, but it is

  359. the same God who empowers them all in

  360. everyone. To each is given the

  361. manifestation of the spirit for the

  362. common good." All empowered by the

  363. spirit for the common good of building

  364. up the body of Christ. And each of you

  365. has the Holy Spirit. If you are a

  366. believer and you've invited Jesus to

  367. save you and received his spirit and you

  368. have spiritual gifts, not only for your

  369. sake, but also for the sake of the

  370. people to the left and right and front

  371. and behind you to build them up that may

  372. be hard for us to believe sometimes that

  373. wait, I have some of these spiritual

  374. gifts. I may have the gift of healing. I

  375. may have the gift of knowledge or

  376. wisdom. I may have a gift of to serve or

  377. to have mercy. Yes, each of you does.

  378. And the only way we can learn to use

  379. those and allow those to be expressed

  380. through us if we are living life

  381. together with one another and being

  382. transparent and sometimes being

  383. assertive and practicing those gifts.

  384. After chapter 12, of course, as you

  385. know, chapter 13 is the emphasis on

  386. love. It was uh read at the wedding of

  387. Jim Kingston and Meredith. Now Meredith

  388. Kingston yesterday they read the chapter

  389. 13 on love and then f Paul follows that

  390. up in chapter 14 of 1 Corinthians by

  391. immediately saying pursue love and

  392. earnestly desire the spiritual gifts and

  393. those spiritual gifts there in chapter

  394. 12 are not exhaustive but in pursuing

  395. love and loving one another we also

  396. pursue the gifts from the Holy Spirit to

  397. bless and to serve one another. And

  398. that's why Paul puts love and spiritual

  399. gifts together

  400. in that um wedding that I was a part of

  401. yesterday. It was at Isa Hope Methodist

  402. Church and it it was um the associate

  403. pastor Meg there and I co-officiating.

  404. So it was a mix Anglican and Methodist

  405. wedding liturgy. And one of the things

  406. that

  407. was in the Methodist part of that

  408. liturgy for the declaration really

  409. caught me because it it said and she

  410. said to the couple, "I charge you both

  411. as you stand in the presence of God to

  412. remember that love and loyalty alone

  413. will create the foundation of a happy

  414. home." And I thought about love and

  415. loyalty. I hadn't heard that before in a

  416. wedding service. And I thought about

  417. love and loyalty as the qualities that

  418. create a foundation for a happy family

  419. or happy relationships and how valuable

  420. loyalty is to the body of Christ and to

  421. our life together. Not being loyal in

  422. any abusive way or manipulative way, but

  423. being loyal to one another to stand with

  424. each other and to stand firm in the

  425. to stand firm in Christ and in the

  426. gospel of Christ with one another. To

  427. continually share it with one another,

  428. and to stand firm and loyal in love and

  429. loyalty with each other, to be there for

  430. one another, not only in good times, but

  431. in bad times, to show up. And I

  432. appreciated that in the liturgy. And I

  433. think it's it goes very much in accord

  434. with what John writes in the 15th

  435. chapter of John that was read earlier

  436. where he says, "As the father has loved

  437. me, so have I loved you. Abide in my

  438. love. If you keep my commandments, you

  439. will abide in my love. Just as I've kept

  440. my father's commandments and abide in

  441. his love."

  442. He has certainly called us to love one

  443. another, but first he calls us to abide

  444. in his love. A and it is no ordinary or

  445. boring activity to abide in the perfect

  446. and unconditional love of Jesus Christ.

  447. And we need that to love one another. We

  448. have to know that we are loved beyond a

  449. doubt. That Jesus has shown his love and

  450. his loyalty to us. that today you can't

  451. go from here and make a mistake that is

  452. going to cause Jesus to stop loving you.

  453. He will not turn from you. He will love

  454. you with an unconditional unfailing

  455. love.

  456. And then in verse 11, he says, "These

  457. things I've spoken to you that my joy

  458. may be in you and that your joy may be

  459. full." When when I was learning

  460. scripture and I would read something

  461. like that, I would think about my joy.

  462. Jesus is speaking to me. I've spoken to

  463. you that my joy may be in you and that

  464. your joy may be full. And I would pray,

  465. "Yes, make my joy full." But then you

  466. start reading the Greek and you realize

  467. all of those in that sentence are

  468. plural. And I can't have that joy

  469. full on my own. It requires the body of

  470. Christ. and for all the body of Christ

  471. to be full of joy and for me to be a

  472. part of it to experience that fullness

  473. of what Jesus refers to as full joy. And

  474. so immediately he says in verse 12, this

  475. is my commandment that you love one

  476. another as I as I have loved you.

  477. And that's that's the key. Receiving his

  478. love, being in the midst of others and

  479. loving them as well.

  480. And he goes on, greater love is known

  481. than this, that someone laid down his

  482. life for his friends. You are my friends

  483. if you do what I command you.

  484. Today we have the challenges in living

  485. life together of busyness. We're all so

  486. busy, not even in bad things. It's just

  487. a very busy lifestyle that we tend to

  488. lead. and also the geography. We've

  489. become more distant from one another

  490. unlike uh you know perhaps the historic

  491. communities that were centered around a

  492. church and we would walk to church and

  493. end up walking with everyone to church.

  494. Now we are spread out. This really um

  495. hit me just in the last couple days as

  496. trying to navigate whether to have

  497. church today and whether it was safe and

  498. thinking about people living all over

  499. this area. probably 45 minutes in any

  500. direction there are people in this

  501. church who are active who live and had

  502. to think about well what are the roads

  503. like in Statesboro or Brian County or

  504. Per or Tybee Wilmington Island Skidaway

  505. all these places that and our busyiness

  506. makes life together as described and

  507. displayed in the New Testament difficult

  508. and challenging

  509. and that's just what we have to deal

  510. with. Not to mention the spiritual

  511. forces of evil that are always trying to

  512. come between us. And you know, you've

  513. heard the criticisms in your in your

  514. mind, the accusations against others.

  515. Well, that person this and this person

  516. that and I don't want to go to that.

  517. It's going to be a bunch of those people

  518. all the time. The devil's trying to work

  519. that out and dealing with that and our

  520. busyiness and our tiredness. I mean,

  521. that's a reality as well. So, we really

  522. need intentionality

  523. and a constant abundant dose of God's

  524. grace to live this out. And I think

  525. that's what God calls us to. And that's

  526. what we have to keep in mind and

  527. thinking about our vision, not only for

  528. ourselves, but for those whom God is

  529. calling into the midst of us. And a

  530. verse that came to mind is from John

    John 1 chapter mention

  531. chapter 1. And it was when John in that

  532. opening chapter of his his gospel is

  533. talking about Jesus as the light of

  534. life. And then in verse 9 it says the

  535. true light which gives light to everyone

  536. was coming into the world. And that's

  537. the light of life that enables us to

  538. live this life that Jesus has described

  539. for us of receiving the love of God of

  540. loving one another and having our joy be

  541. full. It's the light of life that

  542. enables us to weep with one another and

  543. to rejoice with one another. It's the

  544. light of life that enables us to serve

  545. and minister to one another with the

  546. lifechanging power of the Holy Spirit.

  547. It is also the light of life that

  548. enables us to bear witness to that very

  549. light with those outside the church that

  550. we can draw them in to our life

  551. together. And as much as we want to grow

  552. in our relationshipships within one

  553. another, we must grow with in our

  554. relationships with the strangers with

  555. the unbelievers outside of this

  556. wonderful love and salvation of Jesus.

  557. And I'll close with reminding you that

  558. next Sunday we have a wonderful

  559. opportunity of life together with our

  560. oyster roast following the 10:30 service

  561. celebrating Founders Day, the founding

  562. of this church, the founding of Georgia.

  563. It's an opportunity to have a day full

  564. of worship, full of catechesus,

  565. full of mission by inviting others to

  566. that oyster roast and full of life

  567. together. And it goes on from there with

  568. our annual meeting the following Sunday,

  569. the Rehydrate Conference the following

  570. week, and even looking ahead to March

  571. 21st with the second annual Irish

  572. Shindig, a wonderful time of fellowship

  573. to raise money for mission.

  574. So, at the church, you will see many of

  575. these offerings to try to facilitate

  576. life together. And I know you cannot and

  577. should not do all of them, but be

  578. intentional about what God is calling

  579. you into to develop the relationships

  580. with one another and also to be

  581. strengthened and equipped to invite

  582. others into that very life together. So

  583. let us pray.

  584. Father, I pray your blessing upon this

  585. congregation, those here, those watching

  586. and live streaming. Father, I pray that

  587. your Holy Spirit would come and fill us

  588. with your love. Fill us with your love

  589. unconditionally and unfailingly that we

  590. might in the same way love others. And

  591. God, I pray that as we draw closer and

  592. closer with one another, people of all

  593. ages in the congregation, that we would

  594. experience that fullness of joy that

  595. Christ promised. That we would encourage

  596. one another, comfort one another, build

  597. one another up, bless each other as you

  598. desire and envision. Come, Holy Spirit,

  599. build your body, your home right here at

  600. Christ Church Anglican. Amen.
