  1. Praise

  2. God.

  3. Heat. Heat. Heat.

  4. You are

  5. just

  6. magnify the Lord our God

  7. and fall down

  8. for he is holy.

  9. Moses and all of his priests and

  10. those who call on his name.

  11. They call the Lord and heaven

  12. for

  13. you.

  14. Heat.

  15. God is holy.

  16. Our second reading is a reading from

  17. Philippians chapter 3 beginning with

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  18. verse 7.

  19. But whatever gain I had, I count it as

  20. loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I

  21. count everything as loss because of the

  22. surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus

  23. my Lord. For his sake I have suffered

  24. the loss of all things and count them as

  25. rubbish in order that I may gain Christ

  26. and be found in him. Not having a

  27. righteousness of my own that comes from

  28. the law, but that which comes through

  29. faith in Christ, the righteousness from

  30. God that deepens on faith, that I may

  31. know him and the power of his

  32. resurrection, and may share his

  33. sufferings, becoming like him in his

  34. death, that by any means possible I may

  35. obtain the resurrection from the head

  36. now that I have already obtained this or

  37. I am already perfect, but I press on to

  38. make it my own because Christ Jesus has

  39. made me his own.

  40. Brothers, I do not consider that I have

  41. made it my own. But one thing I do,

  42. forgetting what lies behind and

  43. straining forward to what lies ahead, I

  44. press on toward the goal for the prize

  45. of the upward call of God in Jesus

  46. Christ. The word of the Lord. Thanks be

  47. to God.

  48. At this time, our children are invited

  49. to come forward and to follow the

  50. crucifer downstairs to little church.

  51. And as they gather, let us pray God's

  52. blessing upon them.

  53. Watch over your children, O Lord, as

  54. their days increase. Bless and guide

  55. them wherever they may be. Strengthen

  56. them where they stand. Comfort them when

  57. discouraged or sorrowful. Raise them up

  58. when they fall. And in their hearts, may

  59. your peace which passes understanding

  60. abide all the days of their life.

  61. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  62. Please stand for our gospel hymn.

  63. Take my heart and guide me.

  64. to me.

  65. Take my

  66. Let

  67. me see.

  68. Take my

  69. morning.

  70. Heat.

  71. Oh

  72. my

  73. go

  74. my

  75. Heat. Heat. Heat.

  76. My

  77. Heat. Heat. Heat.

  78. our eyes.

  79. >> The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

  80. according to Matthew.

  81. >> Glory.

  82. >> Glory to you, Christ.

  83. And after six days, Jesus took with him

  84. Peter and James and John his brother,

  85. led them up on a high mountain by

  86. themselves.

  87. And he was transfigured before them. And

  88. his face shone like the sun, and his

  89. clothes became white as light.

  90. And behold, there appeared to them Moses

  91. and Elijah talking with him. And Peter

  92. said to Jesus,"Lord,

  93. it is good that we are here. If you

  94. wish, I will make three tents here, one

  95. for you and one for Moses and one for

  96. Elijah."

  97. He was still speaking when, "Behold,

  98. a bright cloud overshadowed them. And a

  99. voice from the cloud said, "This is my

  100. beloved son with whom I am well pleased.

  101. listen to him.

  102. When the disciples heard this, they fell

  103. on their faces and were terrified.

  104. But Jesus came and touched them, saying,

  105. "Rise and have no fear."

  106. But when they lifted up their eyes, they

  107. saw no one but Jesus only.

  108. And as they were coming down the

  109. mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no

  110. one the vision until the Son of Man is

  111. raised from the dead."

  112. The Gospel of the Lord.

  113. >> Praise to you, Lord Christ.

  114. >> Let's pray.

  115. Father, we pray that you answer the

  116. prayer of the hymn that we just sang.

  117. Lord God, take our lives, consecrate

  118. them to you, and answer all the details

  119. of that hymn in the preaching, hearing,

  120. and application of your gospel of grace

  121. this morning. It's through Jesus and by

  122. the Holy Spirit that we pray. Amen.

  123. >> Please be seated.

  124. Earlier in my career when I was in sales

  125. and this is like a couple decades ago,

  126. um, one of the the persons I looked up

  127. to and read his books, listened to his

  128. motivational speeches was Zigg Ziggler.

  129. Some of you may remember that name. He

  130. since passed away. Who's a Christian,

  131. very strong Christian, very genuine and

  132. sincere in his faith, but also a

  133. wonderful motivational speaker and

  134. storyteller. wrote really good books and

  135. so I looked to him as a model and mentor

  136. and I was living in Charleston. Another

  137. thing that I really looked toward in

  138. Charleston but had never visited was the

  139. ocean course, the golf course at Kioa

  140. where they've had I think it was the PGA

  141. open. They've had the RDER Cup golf

  142. tournaments. Beautiful, wonderful course

  143. behind like five gates along the ocean.

  144. And when I was in a sales job working

  145. full-time, I got a call from my stepdad

  146. who happened to be really good friends

  147. with Zig Ziggler and said, "Hey, Zig

  148. Ziggler and I are going to play the

  149. ocean course today. Do you want to go?"

  150. And I thought, "I'm going.

  151. How do I do I tell my boss and ask

  152. permission or do I just go?" Because I

  153. had made up my mind that I was going. I

  154. wasn't going to miss that golf with this

  155. wonderful man and mentor golf at the

  156. ocean course. So there was no way I was

  157. going to miss that. And thankfully my

  158. boss shared my the same enthusiasm for

  159. both Zigg and the golf course. So I was

  160. able to go. But it was one of those

  161. things that I was willing to give up a

  162. lot to go and do this thing with this

  163. person. And that is what the

  164. transfiguration story is inviting us

  165. into. It is presenting us with the

  166. thing, the event, the person that is

  167. worth letting go of everything else to

  168. go and do this, to go and be a part of

  169. this story. Paul writes about this in

  170. his letter to the Philippians that was

  171. read. He writes in chapter 3 beginning

  172. in verse 7, "Whatever gain I had, I

  173. counted as a loss for the sake of

  174. Christ." It's like, whatever I gained

  175. over here, I'm going to let go of it

  176. because this is what I want. And he

  177. says, "Indeed, I count everything a loss

  178. because of the surpassing worth of

  179. knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his

  180. sake, I have suffered the loss of all

  181. things and count them as rubbish in

  182. order that I may gain Christ." And you

  183. may have those things, the dreams that

  184. you want to do or places you want to

  185. see, events on your bucket list that you

  186. would be willing to give up a lot to go

  187. and do this thing.

  188. That's what Paul is presenting Christ

  189. as. He is the utmost highest of what we

  190. could pursue and should pursue. And

  191. that's what the transfiguration

  192. demonstrates that Christ is God. That he

  193. is full of glory. That he is the one who

  194. gives all life and the one whom we

  195. should seek.

  196. The contrast of that is rubbish. All the

  197. things in the world that Paul wants to

  198. give up. We live in Wilmington Park out

  199. on Wilmington Island and there's a HOA.

  200. Uh Susan Chai Chester knows a lot about

  201. that. She was on the board. But you

  202. know, they provide the landscaping and

  203. so there's a crew that comes out there

  204. regularly mowing everything, landscaping

  205. everything, removing all the debris,

  206. picking up the trash. They do a really

  207. good job. But as we walk the dogs each

  208. day, I've noticed for the last months,

  209. there's been a used dog poop bag that

  210. has been in the median among the bushes

  211. for like months. Nobody wants to touch

  212. it.

  213. It is rubbish beyond rubbish.

  214. That's what Paul is comparing everything

  215. to compared to Christ. It It's not just

  216. trash. It's not just debris. We can deal

  217. with that. It's rubbish. Nobody wants to

  218. touch it. I'm not going near it. I got

  219. enough trouble dealing with my own dog

  220. stuff. I know that's rubbish. Paul is

  221. saying, "I consider all things rubbish

  222. that I may gain Christ." The

  223. transfiguration shows us why that is

  224. true. It shows us why that that is the

  225. call of God. That is the life that we

  226. are called to pursue. To consider all

  227. things rubbish. to consider Christ as

  228. the utmost person

  229. being with him, the utmost event

  230. wherever he is, the utmost place that we

  231. can pursue that we would be willing to

  232. let anything go to sacrifice it to

  233. pursue and have that

  234. the transfiguration is such an event

  235. that when we read it and it's in all

  236. three gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke,

  237. this event it is demonstrating ating the

  238. glory of God. It is demonstrating who

  239. Christ is and the call and the command

  240. of God.

  241. And our gospel text today is from

  242. Matthew

    Matthew 7:1

  243. 7:1. It's in Luke chapter 9 and Mark

Luke 9 chapter mention Mark 9 chapter mention

  244. chapter 9 as well. And it is this event

  245. that both all three gospel writers tell

  246. us that Jesus took with him Peter,

  247. James, and John and led them up a

  248. mountain by themselves. Luke alone tells

  249. us that he took them up a mountain to

  250. pray.

  251. This was a prayer event for Jesus and

  252. the three.

  253. When we think of

  254. what we could pursue that would be best

  255. of all, the number one thing on our

  256. bucket list, our dream, what we would

  257. do anything to participate in prayer

  258. with Jesus may not be at the top. The

  259. gospels are showing us that this is the

  260. utmost of our life experience is being

  261. in the presence of Jesus. Being the

  262. presence of the one who created us, who

  263. sustains us, the one who holds our

  264. eternity in his hands.

  265. This is what compared to to this

  266. everything else is rubbish. That Paul

  267. says, I count all of that a loss that I

  268. may gain this. I leave it all behind

  269. that I might pursue this. Everything

  270. that has passed I let go of. This is my

  271. goal to attain the resurrection from the

  272. dead to be with Jesus forever.

  273. And the transfiguration shows us that we

  274. can participate with him. Now so he

  275. takes them up on a mountain to pray.

  276. I believe that this

  277. figuratively

  278. is perhaps the most important

  279. initiatives that we can take in our

  280. lives at this time is to go up that

  281. figurative mountain to pray with Jesus.

  282. to leave the valley and the darkness

  283. behind,

  284. to leave everything that is overwhelming

  285. us in this world behind, the anxieties

  286. of life, and to go up the mountain, to

  287. go into that secret place with Jesus to

  288. pray. Think about, if you're like me at

  289. all, you can understand what I mean by

  290. saying, "Are you overwhelmed with the

  291. news of the day? Are you weighed down

  292. with the burdens of the world right now

  293. and your life and the life of your

  294. family in this world?

  295. Jesus is demonstrating that we need to

  296. leave that behind and to go into that

  297. place with God and pray. That's what he

  298. does. That's what he demonstrates.

  299. And he was transfigured before them and

  300. his face shone like the sun and his

  301. clothes became white as light. The glory

  302. that was with Moses on the mountain for

  303. those days in Exodus that were read,

  304. that glory is not only with Jesus. It is

  305. emanating from Jesus. His face is

  306. shining like the sun. He's becoming

  307. dazzling white.

  308. It It's the image that John sees in

  309. Revelation chapter 1 when he hears

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  310. Jesus's voice and turns and sees him and

  311. describes his face being like the sun.

  312. And this is John who was on the mountain

  313. with Jesus.

  314. Jesus's glory overwhelms those who see

  315. it.

  316. And behold, there appeared to him Moses

  317. and Elijah talking with him. There's a

  318. lot of mystery there.

  319. What are Moses and Elijah doing speaking

  320. with him? Luke in his gospel tells us

  321. they're speaking to him about his exodus

  322. or about his departure that he's about

  323. to accomplish in Jerusalem. Not that

  324. it's going to happen to him, but that he

  325. is going to accomplish in Jerusalem.

  326. They're talking about him going to the

  327. cross and dying for the sins of the

  328. world and being raised to life.

  329. They're talking about the will of God,

  330. the fulfillment of the scriptures.

  331. And then Peter says, "Lord, it's good

  332. that we're here. If you wish, I will

  333. make three tents here. One for you and

  334. one for Moses and one for Elijah."

  335. And it's both Mark and Luke that

  336. describe Peter in parentheses in your

  337. Bibles. And it says Peter didn't know

  338. what he was talking about.

  339. It It's a humbling statement and I'm

  340. sure Peter was comfortable with them

  341. saying that. But it's also important to

  342. recognize that when it comes to the

  343. mysteries of the glory of God and

  344. eternal life and the kingdom of heaven,

  345. no matter how advanced and mature we

  346. become, there comes a place where we, if

  347. we talk about anything, we don't know

  348. what we're talking about.

  349. And our annual meeting is later and we

  350. talk about all the things of the church.

  351. But there's a reality when it comes to

  352. being in the body of Christ where Christ

  353. is the head, the good shepherd over us,

  354. the sustainer, the living word, the

  355. presence of God among us. Where we have

  356. to admit beyond what we're saying here,

  357. I don't know what I'm talking about. And

  358. that's where Peter, James, and John

  359. were. They were seeing the glory of God

  360. in Christ. And then it's all around them

  361. as there's a bright cloud that

  362. overshadows them. They're entering into

  363. the glory of the kingdom of heaven that

  364. was in Christ and with Christ always but

  365. not always apparent and visible.

  366. And then they hear a voice from the

  367. cloud

  368. say, "This is my beloved son with whom I

  369. am well pleased. Listen to him." They

  370. hear the voice of God audibly. And I

  371. don't know this is a mystery where again

  372. I don't know why this is or when we talk

  373. about the voice of God what we're

  374. talking about. Why does he limit his

  375. audible voice to so few times that we

  376. know of in history maybe some of you

  377. have heard the audible voice of God once

  378. or twice in your life. He speaks but not

  379. often audibly. But here he does like he

  380. does at the baptism of Jesus. This is my

  381. beloved son with whom I'm well pleased.

  382. Listen to him.

  383. And then the disciples hear that. They

  384. see that glory and they fall on their

  385. faces and are terrified just like John

  386. does later when he's on the island of

  387. Patmos and sees Jesus. He falls down as

  388. though he were dead. Same here.

  389. And Jesus came and touched them and

  390. said, "Rise and have no fear." Such an

  391. encouraging scripture about Jesus. those

  392. who are fearful at the presence of God

  393. and his glory and his holiness and the

  394. thunder of his words and they fall down

  395. dead. Jesus comes and touches them and

  396. raises them up and says, "Do not fear."

  397. When they open their eyes and look up,

  398. they see no one but Jesus only. It's a

  399. glorious historical event that

  400. demonstrates in many different ways,

  401. visibly, audibly, who Jesus is, the son

  402. of God, God himself, who shares the

  403. glory of God the father in heaven.

  404. And he's here on the earth.

  405. How does this speak to us today? If we

  406. were to ask, what is the Holy Spirit

  407. sharing with us today? Well, one is this

  408. is always an invitation to worship Jesus

  409. as the son of God, as God himself.

  410. It is an invitation to enter into his

  411. presence through prayer, through

  412. worship, to recognize that though we

  413. don't see the glory of his kingdom

  414. visibly displayed like it is on this

  415. mountain, the glory of God is present.

  416. When I read in scriptures the few times

  417. where it is prophesied and promised that

  418. the glory of God will fill the earth as

  419. the waters cover the sea. I w I I wonder

  420. if I pray thank you God that your glory

  421. is filling the earth that it has filled

  422. the earth or do I pray God make your

  423. glory fill the earth because while we

  424. don't see it is it here is his glory all

  425. around us as his kingdom is present as

  426. his spirit is present even living in us

  427. that's what we see this is an invitation

  428. to say come up this mountain to pray

  429. join me keep watch

  430. and Having known the the rest of the

  431. story, we know that this God, this

  432. father of Jesus is our God and father

  433. too.

  434. And as Jesus prays in John 17 that the

  435. love that the father has for the son

  436. would also be in us that we are his

  437. sons. We are his daughters invited into

  438. that holy presence to speak to him and

  439. to hear him.

  440. The call to pray

  441. is we treat it almost like a secret

  442. tool,

  443. like it's a

  444. special alarm that when we can't do

  445. anything else to find help, we pull this

  446. alarm and we say our prayers quickly and

  447. specifically.

  448. But prayer is much more than that.

  449. Prayer is an invitation to come into the

  450. presence of God Almighty who reigns and

  451. is supreme over all things.

  452. The one who created the earth and all

  453. that is in it and gives it to anyone he

  454. pleases. Who can intervene anywhere in

  455. the earth with anyone at any time. We

  456. have access to him. And Jesus promises

  457. that what we ask of him in his name he

  458. will give to us.

  459. This is the way to deal with the

  460. overwhelming anxieties and distress of

  461. the world or the deep desires that you

  462. have.

  463. The approach to dealing with those is to

  464. go to the secret place and pray to God

  465. on behalf of yourself or on behalf of

  466. those who are in need. When you read the

  467. news and you see a victim or you see

  468. someone who is threatened,

  469. we can argue. We can get distressed and

  470. frustrated. We can develop a lot of

  471. angst.

  472. But we can also take that distress and

  473. go to the father and pray for the sake

  474. of the world, for the sake of God's

  475. purposes, for the sake of those in need.

  476. That's what this shows us is that God is

  477. hearing. He's right there to hear and to

  478. speak.

  479. In all three gospel passages, after the

  480. transfiguration the next day, it shows

  481. Jesus, James, Peter, and John going down

  482. into the valley. And the synthesis of

  483. all three of those gospel passages shows

  484. that they go down into the valley. And

  485. there's a huge argument. There's a lot

  486. of conflict. There's a manifestation of

  487. the horrible work of the devil in a

  488. child's life whom the devil is

  489. possessed. who's try the devil has tried

  490. to kill since this young boy was born.

  491. Throwing him into the fire, into the

  492. water, making him convulse. The fathers

  493. brought him to the disciples. The

  494. disciples couldn't do anything about it.

  495. So, they just ended up all arguing while

  496. the devil is throwing it in their face.

  497. Not like unlike the world that we live

  498. in today, be it online or in person.

  499. Everyone arguing, the devil throwing his

  500. work in the church's face, saying,

  501. "You're impotent to deal with what I'm

  502. doing."

  503. That's why Jesus has gone up the

  504. mountain to pray so that he can walk

  505. into that midst and bring peace and

  506. order, bring deliverance and healing,

  507. >> and cast out and destroy the work of the

  508. devil.

  509. That's why the transfiguration isn't

  510. just a event and a display. It's an

  511. invitation to be a part of this life of

  512. the kingdom of heaven and the light of

  513. God that overcomes the darkness.

  514. The other religious people of the day

  515. were spending the time in the valley

  516. arguing with each other.

  517. But those who are following the spirit

  518. of God, and it was by invitation only at

  519. this time, so you know, we can't blame

  520. the other disciples. But those who are

  521. with Jesus are leaving that behind and

  522. going to the father. The one who can

  523. make a difference. The one from whom

  524. power comes to trample on snakes and

  525. scorpions. So question is where are we

  526. going to be? Are we going to be a church

  527. that goes to the mountain or that stays

  528. in the valley?

  529. Powerful through the holy spirit are

  530. impotent in ourselves.

  531. There's the message that the father

  532. gives. This is my beloved son with whom

  533. I'm well pleased. Listen to him.

  534. I I love how the congruence of scripture

  535. appears in surprising ways. John doesn't

  536. share the story of the transfiguration

  537. in his gospel. But he gives a similar

  538. message not from the father but from

  539. Jesus's mom at the wedding in Kaa. They

  540. didn't know what to do. They're running

  541. out of wine. Major crisis. Someone pull

  542. the alarm bell. We're out of wine.

  543. Mary says, "Listen to him. Do what he

  544. tells you." There's a message there.

  545. Jesus's mom and his heavenly father.

  546. Listen to him.

  547. His words are life and power.

  548. Are we people who are listening to Jesus

  549. in the midst of the conflicts? In the

  550. midst of the crisis, in the midst of us

  551. trying to figure out these things that

  552. we don't know what to do in the midst

  553. of, are we listening to Jesus?

  554. Are we going to his word, saying,

  555. "Jesus, speak to me. Holy Spirit, what

  556. are you saying to me?

  557. And are we surrendering and submitting

  558. to his word above all?" even our own

  559. expert opinion and preferences and

  560. assurance of the way that it should be.

  561. Are we listening to God and

  562. subordinating subordinating all of that

  563. to him to the one who knows all things?

  564. He knows what's happening tomorrow, 10

  565. years from now. He knows what we need.

  566. Are we going to him and listening to

  567. him?

  568. He desires our good. He desires our life

  569. and the fullness of life. we can trust

  570. him.

  571. There's also, I think, another

  572. instructive element and and that is

  573. perhaps the most mysterious. What are

  574. Elijah and Moses doing there?

  575. Does anyone know?

  576. All right, we'll move on.

  577. But I do take something away from this.

  578. Jesus, the son of God, whom the father

  579. is saying, "Listen to him," is

  580. listening, it seems like, to Moses and

  581. Elijah. And they're talking to him about

  582. his upcoming suffering and death.

  583. We need to listen to those

  584. who are rooted in the kingdom of heaven.

  585. We need to listen to the other saints of

  586. God whom he has brought around us. And

  587. I'm not just talking about the experts

  588. who have the favorite podcast or who we

  589. can watch on YouTube and and get their

  590. expert opinion. I'm talking about the

  591. people who like Moses and Elijah are

  592. with us like they're with Jesus. They're

  593. rubbing shoulders with him. They're

  594. having a conversation. They're hearing

  595. from Jesus and responding with with

  596. whatever counsel they have.

  597. We need to gain the counsel of those who

  598. are walking with us in the presence of

  599. God. Those who know us, those who know

  600. our hearts, who hear our desires, who

  601. hear our distress. We need to hear what

  602. they are saying from their relationship

  603. with God and with scripture.

  604. We have to put ourselves sometimes

  605. sub rendered, humble and vulnerable and

  606. transparent with other Christians. Jesus

  607. is talking to them about what is the

  608. height of suffering for a human. The

  609. physical pain of the cross, the

  610. spiritual and emotional toll of the son

  611. of God giving himself into the hands of

  612. wickedness and evil

  613. and being

  614. sin

  615. before a holy God. That's what they're

  616. talking to Jesus about. And sometimes we

  617. hesitate to share our foibless, our

  618. fears, our anxieties with other

  619. Christians that they might counsel us,

  620. encourage us, and pray for us. I think

  621. the transfiguration shows us that we

  622. need to align ourselves and make

  623. ourselves vulnerable to other believers.

  624. Even those who are very mature and in

  625. the kingdom of God need each other. We

  626. need to be the kind of person who's been

  627. on the mountain, who's been in prayer,

  628. who's been in the presence of the Lord,

  629. who's been in the word so that we can

  630. share the counsel of God with others.

  631. Listen, I know this world is

  632. overwhelming. I know that your situation

  633. seems impossible, but go Jesus is going

  634. to go down in this valley and when he's

  635. confronted by the man and his

  636. demon-possessed boy, he is going to say

  637. all things are possible for him who

  638. believes.

  639. We need to be people who believe

  640. sometimes for those who are in the

  641. impossible situations. And that takes

  642. considering a lot of other things in

  643. this world rubbish and considering the

  644. reward and the prize of gaining Christ

  645. and an intimate relationship with him

  646. above all things.

  647. And this is spoken not just to us as

  648. individuals, not just to me as a priest

  649. because it's my job, but to us as the

  650. church

  651. because

  652. we're not just here for each other,

  653. we're here for the world. We can't

  654. expect those who don't even believe to

  655. go up this mountain for us.

  656. We have to go up this mountain for them.

  657. And when we're on that mountain, when

  658. we're in the presence of the Lord, there

  659. is nothing that God cannot do in

  660. response to our prayers. When you think

  661. about a person suffering pain, when you

  662. think about the children being abused

  663. somewhere in the world or trafficked,

  664. when you think about the pregnant mother

  665. in distress cuz she the baby's father is

  666. nowhere and she's considering abortion,

  667. God knows them. When you go to God and

  668. you pray, Lord, save children from

  669. abuse. save mothers from aborting their

  670. babies. Those who are suffering loss

  671. because they did such things or those

  672. who have lost a loved one. God comfort

  673. them. God intervene in these areas of

  674. violence.

  675. You know of many places when you go to

  676. prayer and you ask God intervene and

  677. bring peace to these places, God is able

  678. to do it.

  679. There's nothing impossible for the one

  680. who believes and that's what he calls us

  681. to.

  682. So I want to close with the closing from

  683. 2 Corinthians by the Apostle Paul.

  684. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and

  685. the love of God and the fellowship of

  686. the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

  687. Please stand.

  688. Let us confess our faith in the words of

  689. the ny scene creed.

  690. We believe in one God, the father, the

  691. almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of

  692. all that is visible and invisible.

  693. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the

  694. only begotten son of God, eternally

  695. begotten of the Father, God from God,

  696. light from light, true God from true

  697. God, begotten not made, of one being

  698. with the Father. Through him all things

  699. were made. for us and for our salvation.

  700. He came down from heaven, was incarnate

  701. from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary

  702. and was made man for our sake. He was

  703. crucified under Pontious Pilot. He

  704. suffered death and was buried. On the

  705. third day, he rose again in accordance

  706. with the scriptures.

  707. >> He ascended into heaven and is seated at

  708. the right hand of the father. He will

  709. come again for judge the living and the

  710. dead and will have no end. We believe in

  711. the holy spirit

  712. giver of life who proceeds from the

  713. father and son with the father and son

  714. is worship and glorified

  715. spoken through the prophets. We believe

  716. in one holy catholic apostolic church.

  717. We acknowledge one baptism for the

  718. forgiveness of s. We look for the

  719. resurrection of the dead and the life of

  720. the world to come. Amen.

  721. Let us pray for the church and for the

  722. world saying here our prayer

  723. for the peace of the whole world and for

  724. the well-being and unity of the people

  725. of God.

  726. >> Lord in your mercy here.

  727. >> For Steve our archbishop, Julian our

  728. provincial dean, Alex our bishop, and

  732. Mississippi and Holy Spirit Lutheran

  747. Father, we thank you for those who

  748. devoted themselves to helping others get

  749. well. We lift up this morning Jason's

  757. and that your presence will be upon.

  771. life in certain hope of the resurrection

  772. in thanksgiving. Let us pray.

  773. Lord in your mercy here our pray.

  774. >> Your additional prayers are invited at

  775. this time.

  776. folks for

  777. their courage and

  778. taking this task. Thank you for their

  779. humility and willingness to serve your

  780. church.

  781. Lord, we pray for uh this upcoming week

  782. as we have many guests coming to town.

  783. We're part of the Sams and New Wineskins

  784. and Anglican Partners boards. And we

  785. also ask your blessing on the Rehydrate

  786. Conference. We pray that uh this would

  787. be a week that renews both our church,

  788. our parish, and also the broader church.

  789. all

  790. right now.

  791. What a perfect time we

  792. leave all behind on that mountain with

  793. you come before you. So Lord we do we

  794. come before you now we are here with you

  795. here to hear you to speak to us and

  796. minister to us. So Lord we ask you would

  797. lead us

  798. We make our we make our plans. We know

  799. that it's you who guide our steps. We

  800. thank you for that. Give us the courage

  801. and the boldness and the humility and

  802. the love to walk with you here in

  803. everywhere you

  804. saidall.

  805. Father, we desire that we truly want to

  806. be amongst all your people and we will

  807. see the fulfillment and fullness of your

  808. spirit that we can do what you call us

  809. to do and be the light.

  810. We pray that you consecrate us this

  811. week, Lord, during Ash Wednesday going

  812. into Lent that we might watch, that we

  813. might pray, that we might decrease in

  814. this body so that you increase. Holy

  815. Spirit, have your way with this body,

  816. Lord. Set her apart for your purposes in

  817. this hour, Lord, that we might be salt

  818. and light to Savannah by the power of

  819. your Holy Spirit, by the authority of

  820. the name of Jesus.

  821. And Lord, as we begin Lent, we do ask

  822. for your wisdom and discernment for this

  823. body and for each one of us in our

  824. hearts to know what rubbish we need to

  825. throw out so that we can spend time with

  826. you doing what matters. Give us the

  827. grace to pray and to fast and to

  828. discipline ourselves to choose the one

  829. thing that matters.

  830. Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers

  831. for Jesus Christ's sake, our only

  832. mediator and advocate, who lives and

  833. reigns with you in the unity of the Holy

  834. Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  835. Now, let us humbly confess our sins to

  836. Almighty God, kneeling as you are able.

  837. Most merciful God, we confess that we

  838. have sinned against you in thought,

  839. word, and deed. By what we have done and

  840. by what we have left undone. We have not

  841. loved you with our whole heart. We have

  842. not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We

  843. are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

  844. For the sake of your son Jesus Christ,

  845. have mercy on us and forgive us that we

  846. may delight in your will and walk in

  847. your ways to the glory of your name.

  848. >> Amen.

  849. >> Almighty God, our heavenly father, who

  850. in his great mercy has promised

  851. forgiveness of sins to all those who

  852. sincerely repent and with true faith

  853. turn unto him, have mercy upon you.

  854. pardon and deliver you from all your

  855. sins, confirm and strengthen you in all

  856. goodness, and bring you to everlasting

  857. life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  858. Amen. Hear the word of God to all who

  859. truly turn to him. Come to me all who

  860. labor and are heavy laden, and I will

  861. give you rest. God so loved the world

  862. that he gave his only begotten son that

  863. whoever believes in him should not

  864. perish but have eternal life. This

  865. saying is trustworthy and deserving of

  866. full acceptance that Christ Jesus came

  867. into the world to save sinners. And if

  868. anyone sins, we have an advocate with

  869. the father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

  870. He is the propitiation for our sins and

  871. not for ours only, but also for the sins

  872. of the whole world. Please stand.

  873. The peace of the Lord be always with

  874. you.

  875. share Christ's peace with one another.

  876. I'll just

  877. All right. Good morning again.

  878. Want to welcome all of our guests and

  879. visitors. And normally after our

  880. service, we have refreshments and coffee

  881. and a time of fellowship. But today

  882. we're not doing that because we're going

  883. to take about a 5m minute break and then

  884. kick off our annual meeting. And then

  885. following it, we'll have time for

  886. refreshments and fellowship.

  887. And if you look on page 22 of your order

  888. of worship, you'll see some of the

  889. events that we have upcoming. As Father

  890. Brian prayed, we have a really

  891. significant and momentous week here at

  892. our church because we have the Rehydrate

  893. Conference, which is a conference where

  894. we're going to have three Anglican

  895. bishops as speakers, two Anglican

  896. priests as speakers, and some breakout

  897. sessions with other Anglican priests.

  898. and all geared toward life in the spirit

  899. and being equipped and empowered to live

  900. life in the spirit both for your own

  901. sake and also as a minister to others.

  902. And then preceding and following that

  903. we'll have gatherings of mission groups

  904. who will be having their board and

  905. annual meetings here before and after.

  906. So a lot of focus on mission. Uh we'll

  907. be welcoming I think probably about 120

  908. guests this week. So that will influence

  909. some of the events that we have. Um

  910. those that you're a regular part of just

  911. make sure you touch base with whoever's

  912. leading that about um your schedule. It

  913. does affect Ash Wednesday too this year.

  914. Um last year we added the 7:30 a.m.

  915. service. We'll continue with that. 7:30

  916. a.m. on Wednesday here. And then we'll

  917. have a noon service here as well. We

  918. moved back the evening service from 6:00

  919. p.m. to 700 p.m. for the sake of those

  920. gathering that day um for the Anglican

  921. uh new wines skkins missionary partners.

  922. So 7:30 noon and 7:00 ash Wednesday

  923. services. We will also plan on having

  924. stations of the cross on Fridays during

  925. Lent at 5:30. that will start on Friday

  926. the 28th because Friday, this Friday,

  927. we'll have a uh that rehydrate

  928. conference will be here. So, Stations of

  929. the Cross will start a week later.

  930. And we do have a big event a week from

  931. today in the evening at 6:00 p.m. here.

  932. Our former summer intern and current

  933. curate and deacon, Drew Ibach, will be

  934. ordained to the priesthood.

  935. Yeah. Go ahead and stand up, Drew.

  936. Yeah. So, that'll be really exciting.

  937. Everyone is welcome to come at 6:00 p.m.

  938. It's following. Uh reception will be

  939. following. And so, a week from today, we

  940. will not have a Complan service because

  941. of the ordination. Um so, come to

  942. Complin tonight, but next week we will

  943. not have Complain. I also want to make

  944. another announcement that a new baby

  945. Eugene David Robinson was born on

  946. Wednesday to Scott Robinson and Meredith

  947. Hoffines Robinson. So yeah,

  948. if you're watching, great job. 10 lbs

  949. plus. So yeah, way to go Meredith. So

  950. hopefully we'll meet him today. And

  951. while I'm thinking about it, let's say a

  952. prayer for Millie Hoover because she's

  953. scheduled to be induced today for her

  954. and Mitch's baby. So, let's lift her up

  955. in prayer. Father, we lift up Millie as

  956. she gives birth today to their fourth

  957. child. God, we pray that you bless her

  958. and her baby with health and strength.

  959. And I pray that your grace will abound

  960. to her and ease the burden of

  961. childbirth. and bless her and Mitch and

  962. Sarah, Joy, Mitchell, and Monty as they

  963. welcome a new sibling. We bless them in

  964. Jesus name. Amen.

  965. >> All right.

  966. As we have the offering and as you

  967. approach the Lord's table, walk in love,

  968. knowing that it is him who gives us the

  969. power and ability to create wealth, him

  970. who loves us so much. So with all that

  971. he's given to you, be a cheerful giver

  972. by his grace and goodness. Amen.

  973. Jesus

  974. Christ.

  975. Oh my heart.

  976. All of the Singer

  977. God

  978. you

  979. grant us gracious

  980. Lord

  981. Jesus,

  982. gentle

  983. Lift our souls in gladness

  984. gra

  985. for our sales.

  986. when death is near

  987. and

  988. peace

  989. when We embrace

  990. you.

  991. Praise us with sweet gra.

  992. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the

  993. power and the glory and the victory and

  994. the majesty. For everything in heaven

  995. and on earth is yours. Yours is the

  996. kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as

  997. head above all. All things come from

  998. you, O Lord, and of your own have we

  999. given you.

1000. >> The Lord be with you.

1001. >> And with your spirit.

1002. >> Lift up your hearts.

1003. >> We lift them up to the Lord.

1004. >> Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

1005. >> It is right to give thanks and praise.

1006. >> It is right, our duty, and our joy

1007. always and everywhere to give thanks to

1008. you, Father Almighty, creator of heaven

1009. and earth. Because in the mystery of the

1010. word made flesh, you have caused a new

1011. light to shine in our hearts to give the

1012. knowledge of your glory in the face of

1013. your son Jesus Christ our Lord.

1014. Therefore, we praise you joining our

1015. voices with angels and archangels and

1016. with all the company of heaven who

1017. forever sing this hymn to proclaim the

  1018. glory of your name.

  1019. Holy, holy, holy

  1020. Lord God.

1021. Blessed is he who comes in the name of

  1022. the name of the

1023. Please kneel as we continue in prayer.

1024. Holy and gracious Father, in your

1025. infinite love, you made us for yourself.

1026. And when we had sinned against you and

1027. become subject to evil and death, you in

1028. your mercy, sent your only son, Jesus

1029. Christ, into the world for our

1030. salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the

1031. Virgin Mary, he became flesh and dwelt

1032. among us. In obedience to your will, he

1033. stretched out his arms upon the cross

1034. and offered himself once for all that by

1035. his suffering and death we might be

1036. saved. By his resurrection, he broke the
