  1. Good morning everyone.

  2. >> Welcome to Christ Church Anglican for

  3. worship this morning. Uh this is the

  4. fourth Sunday of Lent as we continue

  5. this season of preparation for Holy Week

  6. and for Easter, a time of penitence, a

  7. time of prayer and fasting and seeking

  8. the Lord also with being generous in our

  9. offerings.

  10. And as we continue in Lent, we'll at the

  11. beginning of the service, we'll pray

  12. through the decalogue. And I know that

  13. can seem wrote sometimes to pray through

  14. the ten commandments and asking God to

  15. incline our hearts to keep this law. So

  16. I encourage you to really invite the

  17. Holy Spirit to help you in that time of

  18. prayer to come into your heart and even

  19. as we pray for our hearts to be purified

  20. in the collect of purity to pray for God

  21. to maybe provide some conviction, some

  22. sanctification during that time of

  23. prayer at the beginning of our service.

  24. And let us pray now and set our hearts

  25. and minds on seeking the Lord and

  26. opening ourselves to him and what he has

  27. for us today through his word and

  28. through his spirit and through the body

  29. of Christ and inviting him to also speak

  30. to us the words that we need to hear and

  31. that he wants us to hear today. Let us

  32. pray.

  33. Father, we come to you through Jesus

  34. Christ, the way, the truth, and the

  35. life, who brings us before you in his

  36. righteousness, that we might stand with

  37. confidence before you, worshiping,

  38. praying, receiving, and listening.

  39. God, we invite you to minister to us

  40. according to your goodness and love for

  41. each one of us. Come, Holy Spirit.

  42. You are the Lord of our lives, the Lord

  43. of this church. Come and have your way

  44. among us. We give you the space and the

  45. room to minister. Help us to worship

  46. you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in a

  47. way of which you are worthy and in which

  48. you delight. And let your name be

  49. glorified today, the name of Jesus,

  50. drawing all people unto him. Amen.

  51. Hallelujah.

  112. us.

  113. >> The Lord be with you.

  114. >> Let us pray.

  115. Gracious Father, who whose blessed son

  116. Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be

  117. the true bread which gives life to the

  118. world. Evermore, give us this bread that

  119. he may live in us and we in him, who

  120. lives and reigns with you in the Holy

  121. Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  122. Please be seated for the reading of Holy

  123. Scripture.

  124. A reading from 1st Samuel chapter 16

  125. beginning with verse 1.

  126. The Lord said to Samuel, "How long will

  127. you grieve over Saul since I have

  128. rejected him from being king over

  129. Israel?

  130. Fill your horn with oil and go. I will

  131. send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for

  132. I have provided for myself a king among

  133. his sons." And Samuel said, "How can I

  134. go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me."

  135. The Lord said, "Take a heer with you and

  136. say, I have come to sacrifice to the

  137. Lord, and invite Jesse to the sacrifice,

  138. and I will show you what you shall do,

  139. and you shall anoint for me him whom I

  140. declare to you." Samuel did what the

  141. Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem.

  142. The elders of the city came to meet him

  143. trembling and said, "Do you come

  144. peaceibly?" And he said, "Peacey, I have

  145. come to sacrifice to the Lord.

  146. Consecrate yourselves and come with me

  147. to the sacrifice." And he consecrated

  148. Jesse and his sons and invited them to

  149. the sacrifice.

  150. When they came, he looked on Elab and

  151. thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed is

  152. before him." But the Lord said to

  153. Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance

  154. or on the height of his stature, because

  155. I have rejected him." For the Lord sees

  156. not as man sees. Man looks on the

  157. outward appearance, but the Lord looks

  158. on the heart." Then Jesse called

  159. Abinadab and made him pass before

  160. Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the

  161. Lord chosen this one." Then Jesse made

  162. Shama passed by. And he said, "Neither

  163. has the Lord chosen this one." And Jesse

  164. made seven of his sons pass before

  165. Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, "The

  166. Lord has not chosen these." Then Samuel

  167. said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here?"

  168. And he said, "There remains yet the

  169. youngest, but behold, he is keeping the

  170. sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send

  171. and get him, for we will not sit down

  172. till he comes here." And he sat and he

  173. sent and brought him in. Now he was

  174. ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was

  175. handsome. And the Lord said, "Arise,

  176. anoint him, for this is he." Then Samuel

  177. took the horn of oil and anointed him in

  178. the midst of his brothers. And the

  179. spirit of the Lord rushed upon David

  180. from that day forward. And Samuel rose

  181. up and went to Rama.

  182. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

  183. The Lord is my

  184. heures

  185. and for beside the waters of

  186. He shall refresh my soul

  187. and bring me forth into the

  188. righteousness for his name.

  189. Even though I walk through the valley of

  190. the shadow of death, I will fear no.

  191. You shall prepare a table before me in

  192. the presence of those who trouble me.

  193. You have anointed my head with oil and

  194. my cup.

  195. Surely your mercy shall follow me all

  196. the days of my life

  197. and I will dwell in the house of the

  198. Lord forever.

  199. A reading from Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  200. beginning with verse one.

  201. Therefore, be imitators of God, as

  202. beloved children, and walk in love as

  203. Christ loved us and gave himself up for

  204. us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to

  205. God. But sexual immorality and all

  206. impurity or covetousness must not even

  207. be named among you as is proper among

  208. saints. Let there be no filthiness, nor

  209. foolish talk, nor crude joking, which

  210. are out of place, but instead let there

  211. be thanksgiving.

  212. For you may be sure of this, that

  213. everyone who is sexually immoral or

  214. impure or who is coveted, that is an

  215. idoltor, has no inheritance in the

  216. kingdom of Christ and God.

  217. Let no one deceive you with empty words.

  218. For because of these things, the wrath

  219. of God comes upon the sons of

  220. disobedience.

  221. Therefore, do not become partners with

  222. them. For at one time you were darkness,

  223. but now you are light in the Lord. Walk

  224. as children of light. For the fruit of

  225. light is found in all that is good and

  226. right and true and try to discern what

  227. is pleasing to the Lord.

  228. Take no part in the unfruitful works of

  229. darkness, but instead expose them. For

  230. it is shameful even to speak of the

  231. things that they do in secret. But when

  232. anything is exposed by the light, it

  233. becomes visible. For anything that

  234. becomes visible is light. Therefore, it

  235. says, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from

  236. the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

  237. The word of the Lord.

  238. >> Thanks be to God.

  239. And now invite any children to come

  240. forth and follow the crucifer out for

  241. little church.

  242. And as they gather, let us pray a

  243. blessing over them. Father, we're

  244. grateful for the children amongst us. We

  245. pray that you'd bless them and keep them

  246. and that they would never know a day

  247. apart from your love. Amen.

  248. Heat. Heat.

  249. Heat.

  250. that we

  251. and

  252. I ask you Heat. Heat.

  253. Heat. Heat.

  254. till my heart

  255. Heat. Heat.

  256. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

  257. according to John.

  258. >> Glory to you Lord Christ.

  259. >> Here begins the first verse of the ninth

  260. chapter.

  261. As Jesus passed by, he saw a man blind

  262. from birth. And his disciples asked him,

  263. "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his

  264. parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus

  265. answered, "It was not that this man sin

  266. or his parents, but that the works of

  267. God might be displayed in him. We must

  268. work the works of him who sent me while

  269. it is day. Night is coming when no one

  270. can work. As long as I am in the world,

  271. I am the light of the world." Having

  272. said these things, he spat on the ground

  273. and made mud with the saliva. Then he

  274. anointed the man's eyes with the mud,

  275. and he said to him, "Go wash in the pool

  276. of Salom," which means scent. So he went

  277. and washed and came back seeing. The

  278. neighbors and those who had seen him

  279. before as a beggar were saying, "Is this

  280. not the man who used to sit and beg?"

  281. Some said, "It is he." Others said, "No,

  282. but he is like him." He kept saying, "I

  283. am the man." So they said to him, "Then

  284. how are your eyes opened?" He answered,

  285. "The man called Jesus made mud and

  286. anointed my eyes and said to me, "Go to

  287. Salom and wash." So I went and washed

  288. and received my sight. They said to him,

  289. "Where is he?" He said, "I do not know."

  290. They brought to the Pharisees the man

  291. who had formerly been blind, and they

  292. reviled him, saying, "You are his

  293. disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

  294. We know that God has spoken to Moses,

  295. but as for this man, we do not know

  296. where he comes from." The man answered,

  297. "Why, this is an amazing thing. You do

  298. not know where he comes from, and yet he

  299. opened my eyes. We know that God does

  300. not listen to sinners. But if anyone is

  301. a worshshiper of God and does his will,

  302. God listens to him. Never since the

  303. world began has it been heard that

  304. anyone opened the eyes of a man born

  305. blind.

  306. If this man were not from God, he could

  307. do nothing. They answered him, "You were

  308. born in utter sin, and you would teach

  309. us?" And they cast him out. Jesus heard

  310. that they had cast him out. And having

  311. found him, he said, "Do you believe in

  312. the Son of Man?" He answered, "And who

  313. is he, sir, that I may believe?" Jesus

  314. said to him, "You have seen him, and it

  315. is he who is speaking to you." He said,

  316. "Lord, I believe." And he worshiped him.

  317. Jesus said, "For judgment I came into

  318. the world that those who do not uh see

  319. may see, and those who see may become

  320. blind." Some of the Pharisees near him

  321. heard these things and said to him, "Are

  322. we also blind?" Jesus said to them, "If

  323. you were blind, you would have no guilt.

  324. But now that you say we see, your guilt

  325. remains." The Gospel of the Lord.

  326. >> Praise to you, Lord Christ.

  327. Let us pray.

  328. >> Father, open our eyes and our ears that

  329. we might see the working of the Holy

  330. Spirit and hear what the spirit is

  331. saying. And Holy Spirit, invite you to

  332. come to speak through me your word, your

  333. message for this congregation today.

  334. Apply it to our hearts with power and

  335. conviction and help us to walk it out

  336. for the sake of Christ. It's in his name

  337. that we pray. Amen. Please be seated.

  338. I encourage you to turn to Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  339. chapter 5 in your Bibles as that's where

  340. I'm going to spend the time this

  341. morning. Even though it's tough to

  342. ignore the story of David from 1 Samuel

  343. and his anointing or the story of the

  344. blind man and Jesus healing him or Psalm

  345. 23, the psalm of the good shepherd. But

  346. God has really led me to focus on

  347. Ephesians 5 and primarily the initial

  348. verses. So if you turn there with me to

  349. Ephesians 5, you'll see a very simple

  350. and easy command and exhortation from

  351. the Apostle Paul in verse one.

  352. Therefore, be imitators of God.

  353. No problem. Right?

  354. So this is the scripture and you know we

  355. as Anglicans here we stand on the

  356. scripture. I mean, people in this church

  357. made a great sacrifice and stance and

  358. movement based on the scripture that we

  359. would all be here and be Anglicans

  360. today. And here's the message and the

  361. exhortation to all of us. Be imitators

  362. of God. It leaves it pretty open.

  363. There's no emphasis on be imitators of

  364. God when you're at church, be imitators

  365. of God when it feels right, or be

  366. imitators of God when he's doing

  367. something that you like. It is general

  368. and all the time. Be imitators of God.

  369. It's overwhelming.

  370. But you know, there's a wonderful saying

  371. from the church fathers. What God

  372. commands, he enables. That's grace.

  373. That's grace versus law that leads to

  374. punishment. Grace

  375. enables what God commands and leads to

  376. reconciliation and peace with God. So if

  377. God commands us in his word to be an

  378. imitator of him, he must be willing and

  379. planning on being willing to and

  380. planning on giving us the grace and the

  381. power to imitate how God has made

  382. himself known to us. And I think the

  383. next phrase is key to understanding how

  384. can we as sinful people so weak created

  385. as we are. How can we imitate God? How

  386. can we fulfill this command? Should we

  387. just say well I can't do that and move

  388. on and go from there or do we take this

  389. seriously as the word of God and try to

  390. understand how can I imitate God? And

  391. one of the keys is right away in the

  392. next phrase as beloved children.

  393. And as hard as it is to believe that we

  394. are supposed to imitate God and that

  395. maybe we can in some or all ways in our

  396. life. It I think is just as hard for us

  397. to believe to really believe to accept

  398. and to live out the truth that we are

  399. beloved children of God.

  400. Now I know some of you are are thinking

  401. what are you talking about? But I know

  402. John 3:16, God so loved the world that

    John 3:16

  403. he gave his only begotten son that

  404. whoever believes in him should have

  405. eternal life. I of course God loves

  406. everyone. I know that.

  407. And we could just gloss it over, go on

  408. to the next thing. But to live in the

  409. reality, in the true awareness and

  410. acceptance that we are beloved children

  411. of God is transformative.

  412. It's also very confrontational and even

  413. threatening because it requires us to

  414. expose ourselves to God who knows all

  415. things, who knows how to ask us

  416. questions, who knows how to convict us

  417. of our sins, who knows how to align us

  418. with his word by disciplining us.

  419. It's also very uncomfortable and

  420. vulnerable

  421. to just stop and be still and to let

  422. someone love us. Even though I've heard

  423. more than one Christian author say that

  424. the most important thing that a believer

  425. can do in his or her prayer life, in his

  426. or her Christian life, is to let him or

  427. herself be loved by God.

  428. And that's the message. That's the

  429. emphasis that God has put on my heart

  430. this week and would not let me get away

  431. from it. Even though I'd love to tell

  432. the story of David or talk about the

  433. blind man, God wants us to be imitators

  434. of him by living in the reality and

  435. truth that we are his beloved.

  436. that

  437. we can believe that Jesus is the beloved

  438. son of God because he's perfect in every

  439. way. We know that he is God, that he's

  440. one with God.

  441. And so, of course, God the Father would

  442. love the perfect son, Jesus.

  443. And in fact, that's a message of

  444. scripture. It's emphasized. It is God's

  445. expression to Jesus. In Mark chapter 1

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  446. at the baptism, just like Matthew and

  447. Luke's accounts, when Jesus is baptized

  448. by John, he goes into the river. And as

  449. he's coming out of the river and

  450. praying, the heavens are open. The Holy

  451. Spirit descends on him and then they

  452. hear the voice of the father in heaven

  453. saying to Jesus, "You are my beloved

  454. son. With you I am well pleased."

  455. And I think none of us doubt the

  456. reality, the truth of God's expression

  457. of love for Jesus. We also hear this

  458. again on the mount of transfiguration

  459. again narrated in all three, Matthew,

  460. Mark, and Luke when Jesus is there on

  461. the mountain. It's a time of prayer and

  462. he's all of a sudden there with Moses

  463. and Elijah. And then a cloud envelops

  464. him as he is transfigured and glorified

  465. there before John and James and Peter.

  466. And as they're overwhelmed with the

  467. glory of God, they hear God's voice say,

  468. "This is my beloved son. Listen to him."

  469. And we hear that and we think, "Of

  470. course, Jesus is beloved of the father."

  471. The miracle of the gospel

  472. and the grace of God

  473. is that we as sinners created by God

  474. through the redemption that comes by

  475. Jesus Christ can live into his

  476. belovedness before the father.

  477. that as the father loves the son, so

  478. does he love those who by faith in Jesus

  479. are adopted through him as the father's

  480. sons and daughters. That God loves you

  481. today, those of you who are in Christ no

  482. less than he loves Christ himself,

  483. is the mystery of the gospel. It is the

  484. overwhelming message of grace that he

  485. who created you

  486. loves you today as much as the one who

  487. is the creator. And and this is a prayer

  488. of Jesus. And I know sometimes I doubt

  489. my own prayers, but I don't doubt

  490. Jesus's prayers. Do you? Do you think

  491. the father answered Jesus's prayers?

  492. In John 17, before he is arrested and

  493. taken to the cross, Jesus in the garden

  494. is praying for his disciples. He's

  495. praying for the disciples that are with

  496. him and those who will come after him.

  497. He's praying for those like us who would

  498. believe in him through the message that

  499. is carried through the ages. And in John

  500. 17 26, his last petition to the father

  501. on our behalf is this. He prays, "I made

  502. known to them your name, and I will

  503. continue to make it known that the love

  504. with which you have loved me may be in

  505. them and I in them."

  506. While Jesus is praying to the father,

  507. this is less of a request than an

  508. assertion of truth of what is going to

  509. happen. What is going to happen is that

  510. Jesus is going to continue to make

  511. himself f and the father and the holy

  512. spirit known. And as he does that,

  513. people are going to come to faith. And

  514. the love that the father has for the

  515. son, Jesus, is going to be in those who

  516. come to faith in Jesus.

  517. The same love that the father has for

  518. the son that he declared at the baptism

  519. and on the mount of transfiguration is

  520. the same love that he has for you who

  521. are in Christ today.

  522. Can you believe that?

  523. To imitate God,

  524. we look to Jesus who is the exact

  525. representation of God in the flesh. And

  526. to imitate Jesus where we begin and

  527. where God begins with us is to believe

  528. in the belovedness of the father for the

  529. son which Jesus lived into his entire

  530. time on earth and for eternity. If

  531. there's anything that stands out, for

  532. example, in the Gospel of John, it is

  533. the father's love for the son, the son's

  534. reception of that love, and his response

  535. by obedience and sacrifice to the

  536. father's will on behalf of all people.

  537. To imitate God is to begin with

  538. accepting his love for you and believing

  539. that you are loved

  540. and living into that love.

  541. And this is exactly what God has come to

  542. us to do.

  543. Jesus makes promises that those who

  544. believe in him will receive the Holy

  545. Spirit. Another like himself he calls

  546. the helper, the counselor, or the

  547. comforter. It's sometimes translated.

  548. What he says is that to those who

  549. believe in him, the father and the son

  550. will come and make their home in that

  551. person through the Holy Spirit. And what

  552. is the Holy Spirit doing in us today?

  553. Well, he's forming and shaping us in the

  554. image of Christ. We know that he's

  555. perfecting God's purpose and will in our

  556. lives. But one of the very specific

  557. things that the Holy Spirit of God is

  558. doing in us is conveyed in Romans 5:5 as

    Romans 5:5

  559. Paul is speaking to those who have come

  560. to peace with God through faith in

  561. Jesus. And he says to them,

  562. God's love has been poured into our

  563. hearts through the Holy Spirit who's

  564. been given to us. This isn't a it was

  565. poured into our hearts or God generally

  566. loves everyone. This is that the Holy

  567. Spirit is in your heart now. If you've

  568. received Jesus into your life and he is

  569. pouring out God's love into your heart

  570. constantly, it is the living water of

  571. his presence that is being poured into

  572. your heart. Our life of faith is to

  573. believe in that love, to receive it, to

  574. spend time really wallowing in his love.

  575. That it would seep into every crevice of

  576. our soul. That it would flood the doubts

  577. that we have about ourselves. whether we

  578. are loved, whether we are good enough,

  579. whether we've made so many mistakes in

  580. our life that we've missed it, whether

  581. we're just going to skate to heaven by

  582. the skin of our teeth, whether we've not

  583. really lived a life that God can use or

  584. that he would be happy with us. And so,

  585. he's probably just put us in the corner.

  586. to believe and to imitate God. To

  587. believe in and imitate God is to believe

  588. that we are 100% loved with

  589. unconditional unfailing love that just

  590. keeps pouring from the father's

  591. expression.

  592. There's a wonderful scripture in the Old

  593. Testament. It's in Deuteronomy 33:12.

    Deuteronomy 33:12

  594. And when Moses, he's about to die and

  595. the Israelites are going to go into the

  596. promised land. and he he declares a

  597. blessing over them and speaks a blessing

  598. individually to each of the 12 tribes

  599. and to the tribe of Benjamin

  600. representing Benjamin, the youngest son

  601. of Jacob, perhaps the smallest of the

  602. tribes at that time. He prays this

  603. blessing and he says in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 33:12

  604. 33:12,

  605. "Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure

  606. in him for he shields him all day long

  607. and the one the Lord loves rests between

  608. his shoulders."

  609. Now, we could read that and think, well,

  610. he's talking about Benjamin. you know,

  611. they went into the promised land. But

  612. but the it is a statement of truth not

  613. just for Benjamin but for the beloved of

  614. the Lord

  615. whom the New Testament says is us. For

  616. God so loved you that he gave his only

  617. begotten son. You are the beloved of the

  618. Lord. And what this says about the

  619. beloved is let the beloved of the Lord

  620. rest secure in him.

  621. Let the beloved of the Lord rest.

  622. You can rest from trying to earn love.

  623. You can rest from trying to hide

  624. yourself from God's love because it's

  625. just too overwhelming and

  626. confrontational in comparison to how you

  627. have lived your life. You can rest from

  628. worrying about whether God loves you,

  629. whether he is with you, whether he

  630. delights in you, whether he is going to

  631. welcome you into his eternal paradise

  632. with joy.

  633. You are the beloved of the Lord. Rest in

  634. him. And in that rest, let his love

  635. cascade over your life, your soul, your

  636. mind, your heart.

  637. Rest secure in him, for he shields him

  638. all day long. And the one the Lord loves

  639. rests between his shoulders.

  640. Imagine this figurative image. The one

  641. whom the Lord loves rests between his

  642. shoulders.

  643. If you're a parent, imagine yourself

  644. giving your child a loving hug right

  645. there between your shoulders. If you're

  646. a child, imagine your parent giving you

  647. that hug, embracing you so that you rest

  648. right between his or her shoulders. your

  649. imagine your friend, a a sibling, a

  650. loved one, someone who comforts you,

  651. encourages you, giving you that hug.

  652. That's the expression of God's love for

  653. us. We don't see it. We may not feel it.

  654. We have to walk by faith in this love

  655. that is for each of us through Christ.

  656. It is an embrace. God saying to us,

  657. "Listen, you can rest secure because

  658. I've got you. And I want you to be as

  659. close to my heart as can be between a

  660. creature and the creator who created him

  661. or her.

  662. As we come to that truth, to be

  663. imitators of God as his beloved

  664. children,

  665. verse two tells us to live this out, to

  666. walk in love.

  667. Walk in it. Live in this

  668. true and real love that you have from

  669. God.

  670. walk in love as Christ loved us and gave

  671. himself up for us, a fragrant offering

  672. and sacrifice to God. Well, now we get

  673. to the part that's just simply

  674. impossible. How who who of us can walk

  675. and live as Christ did? He was perfect.

  676. And yet, this is the command twice given

  677. in John to love one another as he has

  678. loved us. And again, my hope, my

  679. encouragement is in that reality that

  680. what God commands us, what he demands of

  681. us, by grace, he enables. By grace, he

  682. edifies us so that we can live this out,

  683. maybe not perfectly as Jesus did, but we

  684. can walk it out and we can grow in it.

  685. This love that Jesus demonstrated

  686. as we offer ourselves to him, as we

  687. follow him, we can live and walk in love

  688. so that our lives become a fragrant

  689. offering, a pleasing aroma to God as we,

  690. as Paul exhorts in Romans 12 1-2, as we

  691. offer ourselves to him as a living

  692. sacrifice,

  693. holy and pleasing to God through Christ,

  694. not on our own.

  695. When I think of Christ being a fragrant

  696. offering and I think of fragrant

  697. offerings being made to God, I think of

  698. the image from John's revelation,

  699. his vision of revelation where twice he

  700. sees the throne room of God. He sees God

  701. on his throne and he sees the prayers of

  702. the saints ascending to God as incense.

  703. And another way that we can imitate and

  704. walk imitate God and walk in love is by

  705. offering our prayers of intercession for

  706. others. Others who are close to us,

  707. others we don't know but who are under

  708. threat, who are in need. And offer our

  709. prayers to God as a fragrant offering

  710. and sacrifice to him. Because if you've

  711. spent much time in prayer, you know that

  712. it is an offering. And it takes a

  713. sacrifice to be still in God's love and

  714. to offer prayers to him. And I want to

  715. encourage you in your prayers um with a

  716. testimony of an answer to prayer I heard

  717. uh last week when we were at a clergy

  718. conference with the clergy of our dasis

  719. and one of the priests Brooke Bachelor

  720. who's in Jacksonville came up to me and

  721. he said I got to tell you what happened

  722. at your church and my response like oh

  723. oh no what happened because he was here

  724. for the rehydrate conference and then

  725. spent the weekend here for his meetings

  726. on Monday and was with with us Sunday a

  727. few weeks ago, but it was good. He said,

  728. "During that service, I went to the

  729. prayer intercessors during communion and

  730. they prayed for me. His knee had been

  731. hurting him for a long time and he

  732. couldn't move it without it hurting."

  733. He's probably 50ish. And so he went to

  734. the prayer ministers at communion and he

  735. said two mornings later he got up and

  736. did his normal thing and realized that

  737. his knee was no longer hurting that God

  738. had healed it. And uh just a note he did

  739. what what I could totally relate to. He

  740. he found that his knee was healed and

  741. wasn't hurting. So he kept moving it

  742. around trying to make it hurt, which is

  743. what we do because we just can't believe

  744. that God loves us so much that God would

  745. actually bless us like that, heal us, do

  746. good for us. And that's exactly what

  747. happened. He was healed through the

  748. intercessory prayers that are prayed

  749. here on Sundays. And God he hears and

  750. answers our prayers. Maybe not always

  751. how we want them to be answered. You

  752. know, sometimes just like the beloved

  753. son Jesus, we may have to pray, God, not

  754. my will, but your will be done, and I'm

  755. going to trust you that you're going to

  756. bring me through this and express your

  757. love to me in goodness.

  758. And I also want to encourage you every s

  759. every Sunday, those prayer intercessors

  760. are there. They are an expression of

  761. God's love. They are there to walk in

  762. love and to serve you through prayer. So

  763. don't leave here with un with prayers

  764. that have not been made on your behalf.

  765. if we need to, other people will jump up

  766. and pray for those in line.

  767. There is then a a change in the the tone

  768. of what Paul writes here in verse three.

  769. And I just want to touch on this a bit a

  770. bit. Now he contrasts walking in love

  771. and imitating God.

  772. In verse three, he says, "But sexual

  773. immorality and all impurity or covetness

  774. must not even be named among you as is

  775. proper among saints. Let there be no

  776. filthiness, nor foolish talk, nor crude

  777. joking, which are out of place, but

  778. instead let there be thanksgiving."

  779. Why does he emphasize sexual immorality

  780. and covetness here? Filthiness, foolish

  781. talk, crude joking as contrast to

  782. walking in love. There's a lot of sins

  783. he could list. But as I thought about

  784. this, sexual immorality and covetousness

  785. objectify other people. Rather than

  786. loving them and expressing God's love,

  787. it creates a desire to get from them

  788. something to indulge ourselves.

  789. And so it's the opposite of love. And

  790. what this is getting to is the severity

  791. of the contrast between walking in the

  792. love of God and living according to the

  793. ways of this world and our own flesh. It

  794. is directly contrasting.

  795. And as we devote ourselves to God as his

  796. disciples, as we learn of him, to follow

  797. Jesus through scripture, through prayer,

  798. through worship, through our ministry

  799. together, we are also being discipled by

  800. the world and the devil that tickles our

  801. flesh. And we have to be really careful

  802. how the world is discipling us in so

  803. many ways to make us like it.

  804. One way to guard against that is

  805. mentioned here in verse four, but

  806. instead let there be thanksgiving.

  807. Devote yourself to being thankful to the

  808. Lord. Rather than wanting somebody,

  809. wanting to lust after something,

  810. desiring something of the world, be

  811. thankful to God for all of his goodness

  812. and his grace and his blessings. I heard

  813. a wonderful testimony today about an a

  814. woman who had gone through some trials

  815. and by God's grace she rather than

  816. bemoone those trials she committed

  817. herself to being thankful to the extent

  818. that whenever she was asked how are you

  819. how are you doing she would answer I am

  820. thankful I thought what a wonderful

  821. posture to life to be constantly

  822. thankful

  823. for God's goodness and love rather than

  824. lusting or coveting after what's in this

  825. world to be thanksgiving or to be

  826. thankful always.

  827. Paul goes on to warn us later in this

  828. chapter to look carefully how we walk.

  829. How are we walking in this world? Is it

  830. in love? Is it as God's beloved? Or is

  831. it in anxiety, in fear, in covetousness,

  832. in lust, in panic,

  833. wondering whether God is really going to

  834. come through for us or if he really

  835. loves us? When we find ourselves

  836. doubting his love or forgetting that we

  837. are his beloved, it just means to come

  838. back to him, to rest secure in him, and

  839. to let him pour out his love upon us.

  840. And as we are filled with love, that

  841. love will overflow to other people

  842. around us. And we can let them know how

  843. much they are loved by God. And I heard

  844. another wonderful testimony. I love

  845. hearing the testimonies of the people in

  846. the church and our dasis. And one of

  847. those is from Christy. So Christy, you

  848. can come up. Christy Krill, as you know,

  849. leads the ministry of the dive and is

  850. interacting with some people in very

  851. dire straits um here in our community.

  852. and she's coming off a wonderful gala

  853. that they had last night as a

  854. fundraiser. But I want to share I want

  855. Christie to share with you a story about

  856. someone she interacted with this week in

  857. the hospital who was really bad off and

  858. we would even say was a really bad

  859. person, but Christy walked in love. And

  860. so tell us about that.

  861. >> Can you hear me?

  862. >> Yep.

  863. >> Good morning.

  864. I uh visit and work with homeless

  865. patients all over Chattam County in

  866. partnership with every hospital, the

  867. court system, and um every first

  868. responding organization in town. It's

  869. not unusual for me to get a call to come

  870. to the jail, the streets, the hospital,

  871. a detox ward, or anything like that. But

  872. what is unusual is for me to get a

  873. patient that spans every single one of

  874. those um organizations that I just

  875. mentioned. About a week and a half ago,

  876. I got called to come to Memorial

  877. Hospital for a patient whose name I

  878. can't disclose, but he was in CPU 10 in

  879. the tower at Memorial.

  880. I was briefed on this patient by every

  881. uh organization pretty much that I

  882. mentioned. I had his criminal background

  883. um record that was read like a phone

  884. book. I had his medical chart that was

  885. bleak. I had his toxicology report. And

  886. I had it under very good authority from

  887. all of the people that that briefed me

  888. on this man that he was not a person

  889. that I wanted to know. This was

  890. hopeless. But we're calling you to see

  891. what you can uh do here and are you

  892. willing? And I was willing. I said,

  893. "Yes, I'm willing." However, I was

  894. prepared to be offended and appalled

  895. because of what I had read. So, I headed

  896. to Memorial Hospital. I went up to his

  897. room and um I knocked as I do and when I

  898. stepped inside the doctor was finishing

  899. up with him and um all of a sudden u my

  900. my wall came down and all I could see

  901. was this man's soul. I asked him if it

  902. was okay for me to talk with him. He

  903. said yes. And I explained while why I

  904. was there and that when they call me,

  905. it's usually because it's it seems

  906. pretty impossible. And he said, "I'll

  907. I'll agree with that." So

  908. I said to him the only thing I could

  909. think to say, and that was, "What do you

  910. need God to do for you?" And this man

  911. said, "I don't think God can do anything

  912. with me."

  913. I said, "That's not true.

  914. Psalm 139 tells me, tells you that he

  915. saw every day you would ever live,

  916. everything you would ever do, everything

  917. that would ever be done to you. And he

  918. looked at you in every moment of your

  919. life and he said, you know, he's going

  920. to do a lot. He's going to leave a lot

  921. of harm. A lot of harm's going to be

  922. done to him. But if I don't create him,

  923. creation

  924. won't be complete. So, I'm going to make

  925. him. him and then I'm going to spend

  926. every breath he takes drawing him back

  927. to me. So we move from Psalm 139 to John

    John 3:16

  928. 3:16 where God so loved the world that

  929. he gave his only son that also applied

  930. to my patient. The gospel was not

  931. complex in that room. There were heavy

  932. issues, many, many things going on.

  933. But I said to him,

  934. "Do you believe what I just said?" And

  935. he said, "I think you believe it." And I

  936. said, "I do believe it with all that is

  937. in me, but especially sitting right here

  938. with you." And he said, "I believe,

  939. too." And I said, "Would you like to ask

  940. Jesus to come into your heart and to get

  941. involved in your life? Those are the

  942. steps." And he said, "I would, but I

  943. don't know what to say." And I said,

  944. 'You know, then you can repeat after me.

  945. Guys, I had a mountain of evidence

  946. to support the fact that God had in fact

  947. created a disposable human being. But

  948. that is not true.

  949. And I know that in this room

  950. either some of us or someone you know

  951. may not have invited Jesus to come into

  952. their hearts and receive that love that

  953. man I'll tell you I have a hard time

  954. receiving some love. I bet a lot of you

  955. know that. But I know that if we ask him

  956. to he is coming. So, what we're going to

  957. do now is I'm going to say the same

  958. prayer that I said with this man um when

  959. he asked Jesus to come into his heart.

  960. I'll tell you what happened next. He

  961. went home to his family. He had a cousin

  962. that was willing to take a shot on him

  963. and we did get him home with his family

  964. much like a prodal. What will happen

  965. from here is between them and the Lord.

  966. But now I would like to go to a place

  967. with you that I went with him and uh

  968. pray the the prayer of salvation.

  969. Dear Jesus, I believe that you made me

  970. and I know that you love me and that you

  971. gave your life for me.

  972. I have messed up in ways that are seen,

  973. in ways that are not seen. But I am

  974. asking you to come into my heart and my

  975. life. And I trust that you will in Jesus

  976. name. Amen.

  977. >> Amen.

  978. >> Thank you.

  979. >> Thanks for seating.

  980. >> You can take it. Just take it and turn

  981. it off.

  982. Before I close, I want to encourage you

  983. as we celebrate St. Patrick's Day on

  984. Tuesday. We celebrate St. Patrick's Day

  985. because Patrick was an evangelist who

  986. loved so much that he was willing to

  987. give his life for his capttors who had

  988. enslaved him, being willing to go to

  989. Ireland and share the gospel with those

  990. who he thought would probably kill him.

  991. But God went with him and they became

  992. believers and Christians. As you have

  993. the opportunity, as anyone brings up

  994. thanks St. Patrick's Day with you this

  995. week, take the opportunity to share what

  996. made St. Patrick so famous and

  997. celebratory. That is that he went to

  998. Ireland and shared the love of Jesus.

  999. And you can just ask, do you know the

  1000. love of Jesus?

1001. And take it away just like Christy did.

1002. Very simple. So let's close in prayer.

1003. Father, help us to share your love. Help

1004. us to see people as you do. Those

1005. created and made in your image and

1006. likeness. Those for whom Christ died.

1007. Those to whom you are extending your

1008. arms in love that they would be with you

1182. deserving of full acceptance that Christ

1183. Jesus came into the world to save

1184. sinners. If anyone sins, we have an

1185. advocate with the father, Jesus Christ

1186. the righteous. He is the the

1187. propitiation for our sins and not for

1188. ours only, but also for the sins of the

  1195. Thanks,

1196. All right. Good morning again, everyone.

1197. And I want to encourage you to take your

1198. orders of worship with you and review

1199. the upcoming events. And also, if you

1200. haven't already, subscribe to the

1201. newsletter. There's a QR code the inside

1202. of your orders of worship and that way

1203. you can see what all all is upcoming

1204. each week and some of these are you need

  1205. to register beforehand

1206. and I definitely want to highlight the

1207. shindig. Um I appreciate uh the prayer

1208. for the shindig that is happening on

1209. Saturday night 5 to 7:30. If you were

1210. there last year you know you don't want

1211. to miss this. If you didn't come to the

1212. first shindig last year, let me tell

1213. you, you don't want to miss this. It's

1214. gonna be a great time of fun and

1215. fellowship and food. There will be live

1216. and silent auctions with some really

1217. good items that you're going to want to

1218. really go for it so you can win them.

1219. And it is all for the good cause of

1220. raising funds for our mission trips this

1221. summer that are happening. a group going

1222. to Uganda and then a group going to Lamb

1223. Institute in Honduras. So you can be a

1224. part of those mission trips through your

1225. donations and also through just coming

1226. to the Shindig and having fun there. I

1227. also um want to thank the group that

1228. helped Joelle and his family move from

1229. one place to the other in the last

1230. couple weeks, especially David and Loren

1231. Corbin who coordinated that move. And uh

1232. just thanks to everyone who helped with

1233. that. And we're glad you got moved, you

  1234. and your family.

1235. As we approach the Lord's table, as Paul

1236. writes in Ephesians 5:2, let us walk in

    Ephesians 5:2

1237. love as Christ has loved us and given

1238. himself a fragrant offering and

1239. sacrifice. And he did that for us. So in

1240. your offerings, your tithes, and as you

1241. come to the table, walk in love and know

1242. that he will meet you here with his love

  1243. for you. Amen.

  1244. All divine

  1245. love

1246. joy of heaven to earth.

1247. Jesus, thou art all compassion.

  1248. You're our

  1249. love

  1250. us with my Salvation

  1251. lod.

  1252. Let us all ine.

1253. Let us find the proest.

  1254. Take away the

  1255. s.

  1256. the mighty to

  1257. let us

  1258. see

  1259. and never

  1260. threat

  1261. as thy praise

1262. and praise thee without ceasing. Glory

  1263. in thy perfect love.

  1264. Please stand.

1265. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the

1266. power and the glory and the victory and

1267. the majesty. For everything in heaven

1268. and on earth is yours. Yours is the

1269. kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as

1270. head above all. All things come from

  1271. you, O Lord.

  1272. and

1273. >> the Lord be with you.

1274. >> And with your spirit.

1275. >> Lift up your hearts

  1276. to the Lord.

1277. >> Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

1278. >> It is right to give him thanks and

  1279. praise.

1280. >> It is right, our duty, and our joy

1281. always and everywhere to give thanks to

1282. you, Father Almighty, creator of heaven

1283. and earth. You bid your faithful people

1284. cleanse their hearts and prepare with

1285. joy for the pascal feast that fervent in

1286. prayer and in works and mercy and

1287. renewed by your word and sacrament they

1288. may come to the fullness of grace which

1289. you have prepared for those who love

1290. you. Therefore we praise you joining our

1291. voices with angels and archangels and

1292. with all the company of heaven who

1293. forever sing this hymn to proclaim the

  1294. glory of your name.

  1295. Holy,

  1296. holy,

  1297. holy

  1298. Lord God of host

  1299. glory.

  1300. Glory

  1301. to the Lord.

  1302. Bless

  1303. in the

1304. Holy and gracious Father, in your

1305. infinite love, you made us for yourself.

1306. And when we had sinned against you and

1307. become subject to evil and death, you in

1308. your mercy sent your only son Jesus

1309. Christ into the world for our salvation.

1310. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,

1311. he became flesh and dwelt among us. In

1312. obedience to your will, he stretched out

1313. his arms upon the cross and offered

1314. himself once for all that by his

1315. suffering and death, we might be saved.

1316. By his resurrection, he broke the bonds

1317. of death, trampling hell and Satan under

1318. his feet. As our great high priest, he

1319. ascended to your right hand in glory,

1320. that we may come within with confidence

1321. before the throne of grace.

1322. On the night that he was betrayed, our

1323. Lord Jesus Christ took bread and when he

1324. had given thanks, he broke it and gave

1325. it to his disciples, saying, "Take, eat.

1326. This is my body which is given for you.

1327. Do this in remembrance of me.

1328. Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the

1329. cup and when he had given thanks, he

1330. gave it to them, saying, "Drink this all

1331. of you, for this is my blood of the new

1332. covenant, which is shed for you and for

1333. many, for the forgiveness of sins.

1334. Whenever you drink it, do this in

  1335. remembrance of me.

1336. Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of

  1337. faith.

1338. We celebrate the memorial of our

1339. redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice

1340. of praise and thanksgiving. And we offer

1341. you these gifts. Sanctify them by your

1342. word and holy spirit to be for your

  1343. people the body

1344. and blood of your son Jesus Christ.

1345. sanctify us also that we may worthily

1346. receive his holy sacrament and be made

1347. one body with him that he may dwell in

1348. us and we in him in the fullness of

1349. time. Put all things in subjection unto

1350. your Christ and bring us with all your

1351. saints into the joy of your heavenly

1352. kingdom where we shall see our Lord face

1353. to face. All this we ask through your

  1354. son Jesus Christ.

1355. By him, with him, and in him, in unity

  1356. of the Holy Spirit,

1357. all honor and glory is yours, almighty

1358. father, now and forever. Amen.

1359. And now, as our savior Christ has taught

1360. us, we are bold to pray.

1361. Our Father, who art in heaven,

  1362. be thy name,

1363. >> thy kingdom come, thy will be done on

1364. earth as it is in heaven.

1365. >> Give us this day our daily bread, and

1366. forgive us our trespasses as we forgive

1367. those who trespass against us, and lead

1368. us not into temptation, but deliver us

1369. from evil. For thine is the kingdom and

1370. the power and the glory forever and

  1371. ever. Amen.

  1372. praying together.

1373. We do not presume to come to this your

1374. table, oh merch of the world, trusting

1375. in our own righteousness, but in your

1376. abundant and great mercies. You are not

1377. worthy so much as to gather up the

1378. crumbs under your tablec. But you are

1379. the same Lord whose character is always

1380. to have mercy. Grant us therefore,

1381. gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of

1382. your son Jesus Christ, and to drink his

  1383. blood,

1384. >> that our sinful bodies may be made clean

1385. by his body and our souls washed through

1386. his most precious blood that we may ever

1387. more dwell in him and he us. Amen.

1388. Lamb of God, you take away
