  1. Let us pray.

  2. Lord Jesus,

  3. we invite you today to sew as you have

  4. sown that you would reap among us all

  5. that you died on the cross to purchase

  6. among us. Lord, we pray that you would

  7. redeem and receive. We pray that as you

  8. live and are seated at the right hand of

  9. the throne of heaven that you would pour

  10. out your Holy Spirit and fill each of us

  11. today with your Holy Spirit, granting us

  12. wisdom and knowledge of you, knowledge

  13. of your will and the faith and courage

  14. to walk and live it out as you have

  15. shown us the way. We pray this in your

  16. name. Amen. And please be seated.

  17. As all of you, I'm sure, know, the

  18. United States, our nation, is currently

  19. engaged in a war with Iran. We're

  20. attacking Iran in myriad ways. And Iran

  21. is responding in myriad ways, attacking

  22. US interests in the Middle East and our

  23. allies. And Israel and other Middle

  24. Eastern nations are involved in this

  25. war. Our US soldiers have been killed

  26. and injured. Many Iranians have been

  27. killed and injured. This war costs us

  28. about a billion dollars a day, each day

  29. that it's waged. And some in our church

  30. have family members and friends who are

  31. in the military who are possibly in

  32. harm's way. And others have many friends

  33. involved.

  34. But for the most part of us, and I speak

  35. of myself particularly,

  36. we've been able to go on with our lives

  37. pretty much as normal without really

  38. being affected very much by this war

  39. that is going on.

  40. Maybe the rise in gas prices and other

  41. costs of living has been annoying. But

  42. isn't it amazing that somehow our lives

  43. are so shaped that our nation can be at

  44. war and we are

  45. only minimally disrupted and don't

  46. really even have to be engaged in it.

  47. This has come to mind as we enter into

  48. Holy Week because

  49. I think that we and again I include

  50. myself here have in a similar way

  51. thought that we can insulate ourselves

  52. from the spiritual war that is ongoing

  53. that is raging all around us and

  54. throughout this world between the

  55. kingdom of heaven and the powers of

  56. darkness.

  57. However, while we may be able to go on

  58. with our lives and possibly not be very

  59. affected by our war with Iran, we cannot

  60. extract ourselves or disengage ourselves

  61. from the spiritual war that exists. The

  62. spiritual war is everywhere and we are

  63. the targets.

  64. It is impossible for us to insulate

  65. ourselves from this war as if it didn't

  66. exist at all for us. Or if it did, it

  67. was just a minor annoyance that gets in

  68. our way sometimes. There's no escaping

  69. this conflict between the kingdom of

  70. heaven and the kingdom of darkness. We

  71. can't be bystanders.

  72. We really have the choice, I think, of

  73. being passive victims in this war or

  74. being aggressive and assertive victors

  75. through Christ. and the powers that he

  76. gives to us to overcome evil. There is

  77. the other choice that we could align

  78. ourselves with the powers of evil that

  79. some do, but I know that we don't want

  80. to do that. So, we need to engage in

  81. this spiritual battle.

  82. The truth about spiritual warfare is

  83. that it is a war that occurs in our

  84. homeland. This is a war that occurs in

  85. our home. This is a war that incurs in

  86. our souls, which is why it's impossible

  87. for us not to be involved in it.

  88. We have to acknowledge it and fight for

  89. our lives, our homes, and our homeland.

  90. This is a war against a sinful nature in

  91. ourselves.

  92. It's a war against a sinful power that

  93. is manifest in this fallen and corrupted

  94. world. And it is a war against the

  95. powers of the spiritual forces of evil.

  96. In other words, it's a war against the

  97. flesh, the world, and the devil. The

  98. path of Jesus from his triumphal entry

  99. that we celebrate on Palm Sunday to the

  100. cross and to the resurrection is all

  101. about this spiritual warfare against

  102. sin, against the fallen world, and the

  103. spiritual powers of evil. To follow the

  104. way of the cross and the resurrection to

  105. which we are all called to follow as his

  106. disciples means we engage fully in this

  107. battle between the kingdom of heaven and

  108. the powers of darkness.

  109. Reflect for a moment on the story that

  110. we just read, the passion of Christ from

  111. his entrance into Jerusalem or a little

  112. bit after that when he enters the garden

  113. of Gethsemane till the cross.

  114. Think about how the beauty of Jesus and

  115. the love of Jesus

  116. was responded to by the evil of sinful

  117. people, the corruptness, corruption of

  118. this world and the powers of evil.

  119. Jesus experienced hatefulness, ugliness,

  120. torture and murder beyond what we could

  121. really imagine.

  122. And we live in the vortex between the

  123. beauty of Jesus and the ugliness that

  124. was manifest in this story of his

  125. crucifixion.

  126. We must fight for the beauty of Jesus in

  127. our hearts, in our homes, in our

  128. homeland, city, community, nation.

  129. the display of what happens to Jesus,

  130. his arrest, his torture, the mocking and

  131. the scoffing, his death on the cross.

  132. That display

  133. is what is the true nature of sin.

  134. The sin that we are all born with. It is

  135. the true nature of the corruption and

  136. evil and determination of this world.

  137. And it is the true nature of the devil

  138. and his demons that have existed way

  139. beyond we ha way longer than we have and

  140. scheme against us and the church

  141. constantly.

  142. Jesus in the story we read today and its

  143. context shows us the way to engage and

  144. have victory in the battles of this war

  145. that take place in our lives and in our

  146. time. And the way that he shows us is

  147. through prayer.

  148. And I want to emphasize to you today the

  149. power of prayer and the need that we

  150. have to engage in it to overcome the sin

  151. that resides in ourselves still to

  152. overcome the powers the temptations

  153. anxieties and oppression of this world

  154. and to even overcome the powers of

  155. darkness.

  156. The weapon of Jesus and his followers is

  157. prayer.

  158. deep, earnest, and intense prayer on our

  159. own with others. And also spontaneous,

  160. quick prayers of the moment,

  161. prayers against sin.

  162. When Jesus enters the garden of

  163. Gethsemane, he demonstrates how to

  164. overcome our nature. Now, Jesus was

  165. without sin, but he was still human,

  166. fully human, fully God. And to go to the

  167. cross was to experience tremendous

  168. suffering.

  169. and he had to surrender himself to the

  170. Lord and to the Lord's will.

  171. In verse 38 of Matthew 26, which was

  172. read today, when he enters the garden,

  173. he says to his friends, "My soul is very

  174. sorrowful, even to death. Remain here

  175. and watch with me." And going a little

  176. further, he fell on his face and prayed,

  177. saying, "My father, if it is possible,

  178. let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless,

  179. not as I will, but as you will. This is

  180. a prayer for us to pray to overcome the

  181. temptations of our sinful nature and the

  182. power and hold that it has on us to do

  183. the things that are destructive to

  184. ourselves to fall on our face to

  185. experience earnest prayer saying, "God,

  186. not my will, not the will of my flesh,

  187. but the will that you have for me."

  188. When Jesus came back to his disciples in

  189. verse 40, he came to his disciples and

  190. found them sleeping. And he said to

  191. Peter, "So could you not watch with me

  192. one hour? Watch and pray that you may

  193. not enter into temptation. The spirit

  194. indeed is willing, but the flesh is

  195. weak." Jesus isn't calling us to try to

  196. live a holy life of our own strength,

  197. our own willpower.

  198. He is calling us to enter into prayer to

  199. put to death the temptations of the

  200. sinful nature to surrender our will for

  201. the sake of God's will that for us is

  202. holiness for us it is overcoming the

  203. powers of sin even the powers of sin in

  204. our own flesh

  205. it is through prayer not making excuses

  206. to indulge ourselves whether it is our

  207. hunger our lustful appetites or our

  208. attitudes or self-righteousness or ego.

  209. It's not making allowance for the flesh.

  210. It is through prayer saying, "God,

  211. strengthen me to overcome temptation

  212. that your will might be done in my

  213. life."

  214. Now, Jesus also experiences the

  215. corruption and the evil and the violence

  216. of the world against him, the powers of

  217. the world, both the Jewish leaders and

  218. the Romans leaders.

  219. And Jesus when he was standing before

  220. Pilate, when he had been turned over to

  221. Pilate, and this is in John 18:36,

    John 18:36

  222. Pilate asked him about his followers and

  223. his kingdom. And Jesus answered, "My

  224. kingdom is not of this world. If my

  225. kingdom were of this world, my servants

  226. would have been fighting for me that I

  227. might not be delivered over to the Jews,

  228. but my kingdom is not of this world."

  229. Jesus shows us that as Christians, we

  230. are living in a kingdom that is not of

  231. this world. We are called to live in a

  232. kingdom that is the kingdom of heaven

  233. that is against the kingdom of this

  234. world. But what Jesus is not saying and

  235. what the Bible is not saying is that our

  236. enemies are the people of the world. God

  237. is not against the people of the world.

  238. In fact, John tells us in 3:16 that God

  239. so loves the world and loved the world

  240. that he gave his only begotten son that

  241. whoever believes in Jesus would not

  242. perish but have eternal life. So God

  243. loves each and every person in the world

  244. and demonstrated that love on the cross

  245. by Jesus dying for each and every person

  246. in the world. But the world in itself,

  247. its systems, its institutions, the

  248. desires, the way of the world is opposed

  249. to the kingdom of heaven and is the way

  250. of destruction.

  251. And Jesus shows us the way to overcome

  252. the world through faithful prayer. In

  253. fact, when Jesus enters into Jerusalem

  254. following his triumphal entry, he goes

  255. to the temple and he was teaching in the

  256. temple. And in Mark 11:17, it says that

    Mark 11:17

  257. Jesus taught them, saying, "Is it not

  258. written, my house shall be called a

  259. house of prayer for all nations? But you

  260. have made it a den of robbers." God's

  261. desire is that his people would come

  262. together, and his people would be a

  263. people of prayer for all other people in

  264. the world. The way to overcome the

  265. world, the way to respond to the world

  266. is not by giving into its desires,

  267. but by praying for all of those people

  268. in it. That God's house, wherever his

  269. people gather, would be a house of

  270. prayer for the people outside it.

  271. on the cross. As Jesus is dying there

  272. from this crucifixion, from this

  273. horrible violence and torture, he prays

  274. for all those who are doing it to him,

  275. saying, "Father, forgive them, for they

  276. know not what they do." Jesus didn't

  277. come into the world to punish the world

  278. or condemn it. But he came into the

  279. world to serve the world by giving his

  280. life as a ransom for many. And our way

  281. to overcome the world isn't to ignore it

  282. or just get angry at it. It is to pray

  283. for the people in the world.

  284. And then finally, prayers against the

  285. spiritual forces of evil.

  286. We know from the gospel passages that it

  287. is Satan himself that puts the idea of

  288. betrayal in Judas's mind and then at the

  289. last supper, Satan actually enters into

  290. Judas and he goes out and then comes to

  291. betray Jesus. We know that it is the

  292. spiritual forces of evil that are behind

  293. what happens to Jesus. Praise be to God

  294. that Jesus through his death and

  295. resurrection overcomes all of the powers

  296. of evil. They didn't quite know what

  297. they were doing. But Jesus recognizes

  298. the role of Satan and his demons against

  299. his followers and his believers. At that

  300. same last supper, Jesus looks to his

  301. disciples and he says to them in Luke

    Luke 22:31

  302. 22:31

  303. and he calls out Simon. But he speaks to

  304. all of them in this first phrase and

  305. then particularly to Simon. Simon,

  306. Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have

  307. you all that he might sift you all like

  308. wheat.

  309. But I have prayed for you, Peter, that

  310. your faith may not fail. and when you

  311. have turned again, strengthen your

  312. brothers. Jesus recognizes that Satan is

  313. demanding to have all of his disciples

  314. to sift them, to punish them, to torture

  315. them, to tempt them into falling and

  316. turning from God. What is Jesus's

  317. response? It's not to backhand Satan and

  318. cast him off like he could have. It is

  319. to pray for his disciples, the son of

  320. God, the son of man who has all the

  321. power in the universe. His response to

  322. Satan's attacks is prayer.

  323. I have prayed for you.

  324. Prayer is the means to overcome the

  325. spiritual forces of evil. And he knows

  326. that his prayers are going to be

  327. answered and effective because he says

  328. to Simon Peter, when you have turned,

  329. strengthen your brothers.

  330. Satan is not going to win over Simon

  331. Peter because Jesus prayed for him.

  332. Satan does not have to win against us,

  333. against our loved ones, our families,

  334. our church, this nation, those in the

  335. world if we will pray because our

  336. prayers

  337. move God who moves on our behalf who is

  338. greater than Satan.

  339. Jesus goes on when he's being arrested

  340. in the garden. He's being attacked and

  341. his followers seem to fight against

  342. those who are coming after him. And in

  343. Matthew 26:51,

    Matthew 26:51

  344. he says, "Behold, one of those who were

  345. with Jesus stretched out his hand, drew

  346. his sword, and struck the servant of the

  347. high priest, and cut off his ear." Then

  348. Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back

  349. into its place. For all who t take the

  350. sword will perish by the sword." And

  351. then Jesus shows us how to fight against

  352. evil, not with swords and clubs. He

  353. says, ' Do you think that I cannot

  354. appeal to my father and he will at once

  355. send me more than 12 legions of angels?

  356. That's 72,000 angels with just a request

  357. of Jesus. But Jesus is in the process of

  358. sacrificing himself as the lamb of God

  359. who takes away the sins of the world. So

  360. he doesn't call on the angels who could

  361. have rescued him, but he gives himself

  362. over to die for the sins of the world.

  363. In verse 54, he says, "But how then

  364. should the scriptures be fulfilled that

  365. it must be so?" But Jesus in his in

  366. God's grace shows us the power of prayer

  367. that we can pray to God our father in

  368. heaven and ask him for help and he will

  369. send his angels into the midst of our

  370. situation into the midst of our homes,

  371. our families, this community, into the

  372. midst of the world, places we can't

  373. reach, but where we know people are

  374. suffering, we know people are under

  375. threat. We know people are deceived and

  376. lost. We can pray to the father and he

  377. will send his angels to deliver to give

  378. messages to make the way so that people

  379. can come to know Christ. We have that

  380. privilege as those who have been saved

  381. through Christ to come before his throne

  382. with our prayers asking God for help and

  383. to send his angels among us. We don't

  384. control them in any way. We are making

  385. requests unto God. But Jesus shows us

  386. that those prayers that he hears, he is

  387. able and willing to send angels to

  388. overcome the powers of evil. We don't

  389. have to be victims of the powers of

  390. darkness because John shows us in his

  391. first chapter verse 5, that light has

  392. come into the world and that light

  393. overcomes the darkness.

  394. But we have to be active through our

  395. prayers. active in prayers against our

  396. own flesh, against the corruption of

  397. this world, and against the powers of

  398. evil.

  399. And those are the biblical reasons to

  400. pray, the inspirations to pray, the

  401. examples of prayer. But it's not only

  402. that. Even today, neurologists, medical

  403. doctors, scientists, and definitely

  404. ministers have shown the power of prayer

  405. in our own life. Even in reshaping our

  406. brains,

  407. in changing our emotions, our attitudes,

  408. our thought processes,

  409. focused prayer has been studied and

  410. shown to lead to increased social

  411. awareness, which is compassion and

  412. empathy for others. It has been shown to

  413. decrease in the one praying fear, anger,

  414. and anxiety and stress

  415. and create greater emotional stability.

  416. Who here struggles with anxiety, with

  417. stress, with fear, with emotional

  418. instability? You can raise your hand or

  419. we'll know you're all a liar.

  420. I mean, come on. I do. And this shows,

  421. studies have shown that prayer

  422. develops our cognitive focus,

  423. improves our decision making,

  424. leads to healthier mindfulness, care for

  425. others, improved health, body and soul

  426. and spirit. During prayer, ultimately we

  427. become less conscious of ourselves and

  428. more conscious of the God and his power

  429. to change the world, including our lives

  430. and the lives of anyone for whom we

  431. pray. Through consistent prayer,

  432. we bring about the kingdom of heaven in

  433. this world over the kingdom of sin, the

  434. world, and darkness. We fulfill what

  435. Jesus taught us to pray. Our Father in

  436. heaven, hallowed be your name. Your

  437. kingdom come, your will be done. So I

  438. want to leave you with the encouragement

  439. to take every opportunity to pray on

  440. your own with others. You know, every

  441. day you hear things and experience

  442. things that frustrate you, that make you

  443. anxious, angry, sad, desparing, feeling

  444. oppressed.

  445. Don't live into that. Don't accept those

  446. feelings as the norm. You can pray in

  447. response to whatever that stimulation,

  448. that trigger is and God will come to

  449. your aid. God will come and help.

  450. So pray on your own and with others.

  451. Take every opportunity.

  452. Speak to the one who has power over all

  453. creation.

  454. Power over your soul, your heart, your

  455. body, power over your family, your home,

  456. this community, and the world. Amen.
