  1. Let us pray.

  2. Father, on this great, momentous, and

  3. terrible day,

  4. may our meditations of our heart and the

  5. words of my mouth be pleasing in your

  6. sight, oh Lord, our rock and our

  7. redeemer. Amen. Please be seated.

  8. In John chapter 18, the final verses of

    John 18 chapter mention

  9. that chapter that preceded what was read

  10. by Steve, Jesus is standing before

  11. Pilate. And Pilate asks him, "So you are

  12. a king." And Jesus responds to him, "You

  13. say that I am a king. For this purpose,

  14. I was born and for this purpose I've

  15. come into the world to bear witness to

  16. the truth."

  17. Jesus himself in John 14:6

    John 14:6

  18. declared himself as the way, the truth,

  19. and the life and the only way to the

  20. father. Jesus has come to bear witness

  21. to the truth. And it is a truth that

  22. every person will eventually discover.

  23. It is the truth that Jesus Christ is

  24. king of kings and lord of lords. That he

  25. reigns over all and that he is also the

  26. lamb of god who takes away the sin of

  27. the world. This is the truth that he

  28. came to bear witness to and also to

  29. fulfill and he declares this to pilate.

  30. John writes that the law came through

  31. Moses but that grace and truth came

  32. through Jesus Christ. He bears witness

  33. to the truth and accompanying that truth

  34. is the grace of God given to people to

  35. receive the truth and to live into it.

  36. We find Pilate there the recipient of

  37. this message. Jesus speaking to him not

  38. according to his status or position or

  39. power

  40. but according to him being a person made

  41. in God's image and likeness and one for

  42. whom Jesus would die.

  43. But contrarily, Pilate deals with him

  44. from his position. The Roman governor,

  45. dealing with a Jewish leader, teacher,

  46. thinking about not what is true, but

  47. what is expedient. Three times Pilate

  48. says of Jesus, "I find no guilt in him."

  49. One time John says that Pilate even

  50. tried to release him,

  51. but he had no conviction about those

  52. things because he also turned Jesus over

  53. to be flogged, had him stand before them

  54. all with a crown of thorns, being mocked

  55. and beaten, and then eventually turned

  56. him over to be crucified.

  57. And Pilate went about his way not

  58. knowing the truth. And the truth being

  59. demonstrated there on the cross.

  60. The truth

  61. of our depravity as sinners there

  62. right before them all in Jesus Christ

  63. crucified.

  64. There is where we belonged.

  65. Jesus became our sin for us. The other

  66. truth displayed on the cross is God's

  67. great love for us. that while we were

  68. yet sinners,

  69. Christ died for us, demonstrating God's

  70. love. And that is the truth that Jesus

  71. came to bear witness of our depravity as

  72. sinners

  73. and God's love for us that is even

  74. greater.

  75. There's

  76. another way to approach the truth of the

  77. cross than Pilate just doing what is

  78. expedient and comfortable.

  79. Jesus had confronted Pilate when Pilate

  80. tells him,"I have authority to release

  81. you or to crucify you." And Jesus says,

  82. "You would have no authority over me if

  83. it were not given to you from above."

  84. The authority

  85. that Pilate presumed and that Jesus

  86. spoke of is a delegated authority. It's

  87. a temporary authority. It is given from

  88. above and it will be taken away from

  89. above.

  90. There will come a day when we all

  91. discover the truth of who Jesus is. And

  92. at the same time discovering that there

  93. is one authority above and over all

  94. other authorities and all of those

  95. lesser authorities will be removed and

  96. taken away. And we will stand before him

  97. who has ultimate and eternal authority.

  98. We too like Pilate think that we have an

  99. authority that is lasting that is

  100. powerful. We sometimes like Pilate

  101. approach Jesus

  102. with our authority to push him away or

  103. to receive him. Our authority to decide

  104. to sit before him

  105. or to walk away from him. our authority

  106. to submit to him or to go on with our

  107. lives as we desire. But that authority

  108. like Pilates's is given from above and

  109. it is temporary. And one day it will be

  110. taken away and will stand before Jesus.

  111. The ultimate authority and he will

  112. determine whether we enter in to the

  113. paradise prepared by his father for

  114. those whose names are written in the

  115. book of life or whether we will be

  116. commanded to depart because we never

  117. knew him and he never knew us.

  118. The other approach to Jesus than Pilate

  119. being apathetic,

  120. being selfish,

  121. being more concerned about his own

  122. situation than the truth. Is John

  123. the beloved disciple?

  124. And John refers to himself as the

  125. beloved disciple

  126. in his gospel

  127. in verse 26 of chapter 19. And it says

  128. when Jesus saw his mother and the

  129. disciple whom he loved standing nearby

  130. and I would it always makes me wonder

  131. about John describing himself as the

  132. disciple whom Jesus loved.

  133. One of the ways I've come to think about

  134. that is that John stood at the foot of

  135. the cross.

  136. John was there seeing his master, his

  137. lord, his savior, his friend being

  138. crucified, being tortured, his blood

  139. pouring out of him, him gasping for

  140. breath, him being mocked.

  141. John saw the love of God displayed on

  142. the cross in Christ crucified.

  143. John

  144. at the time that he wrote this gospel

  145. would have known that he is beloved of

  146. God. He among all the disciples or

  147. apostles stood there watching the

  148. demonstration of God's love. He knew

  149. that he was beloved.

  150. I think it's a statement not about him

  151. in particular, but about the love of

  152. God.

  153. That John knows that he was beloved by

  154. Jesus.

  155. And that experience of standing at the

  156. foot of the cross watching Jesus suffer

  157. and die on his behalf,

  158. it gave John an intimate

  159. and I think deep awareness of Christ's

  160. love for him. And I think that's seen in

  161. his writings, not only the gospel, but

  162. in his letters in the his first letter,

  163. John writes in chapter 1 verse verses

  164. 7-9.

  165. But if we walk in the light as he is in

  166. the light, we have fellowship with one

  167. another. And the blood of Jesus, his

  168. son, cleanses us from all sin. When John

  169. writes that, he's writing of something

  170. that he witnessed. He saw the blood of

  171. Jesus pouring out of his wounds.

  172. He knows that that blood was spilled on

  173. our behalf. He knows that that blood was

  174. the blood of the son of God, the son of

  175. man, and that it cleanses us from our

  176. sin.

  177. He goes on to write in verse eight, "If

  178. we have if we say we have no sin, we

  179. deceive ourselves and the truth is not

  180. in us." John has witnessed the effect of

  181. our sin on Jesus who took it upon

  182. himself. He knows the depth of our sin

  183. just as much as he knows the greater

  184. depth of Jesus's love. So when he hears

  185. someone say, "I don't have any sin." He

  186. knows otherwise because he saw each

  187. person's sin upon the cross.

  188. But he also knows of the resurrection

  189. that overcame sin and death. So he can

  190. say, "If we say we have no sin, we

  191. deceived ourselves and the truth is not

  192. in us. But if we confess our sins, he is

  193. faithful and just to forgive us our sins

  194. and to cleanse us from all

  195. unrighteousness."

  196. In chapter 3:1 of his letter, he says,

  197. "See what kind of love the father has

  198. given us that we should be called

  199. children of God."

  200. He knows the love of which he writes

  201. because he not only experienced it from

  202. Jesus in their relationship, but he saw

  203. it demonstrated upon the cross.

  204. So he writes emphatically in chapter 3

  205. 16 of his letter, "By this we know love

  206. that he laid down his life for us."

  207. That is love. And I appreciate you all

  208. being here today to sit at the foot of

  209. the cross and to meditate and reflect

  210. upon the cross of Jesus because it is by

  211. that cross by Jesus Christ crucified

  212. that we know what love is. And the more

  213. time we set meditating upon the cross

  214. and Jesus's sacrifice, the more we will

  215. understand and know and experience his

  216. love for us that was enacted on that

  217. day.

  218. In John's last book, the the revelation

  219. of John at the end of his life as he is

  220. in his old age and he's exiled to Patmos

  221. and he sees a vision of Jesus that he

  222. then writes about. He writes in the

  223. introduction to that letter

  224. about Jesus Christ in verse five,

  225. the faithful witness, the firstborn of

  226. the dead and the ruler of the kings of

  227. the earth.

  228. And then he speaks of Jesus to him who

  229. loves us and has freed us from our sins

  230. by his blood and made us a kingdom

  231. priest to God and father. To him be

  232. glory and dominion forever and ever.

  233. Amen.

  234. John at this stage in his life, he is

  235. declaring to people that Jesus has loved

  236. us, that Jesus has freed us from our

  237. sins by his blood that was spilled on

  238. the cross.

  239. And through his resurrection, through

  240. the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, he

  241. has made those who believe in him to be

  242. a kingdom unto himself

  243. to be priests to his God and father,

  244. meaning to be children of God.

  245. And John goes on to write in verse 7,

  246. "Behold, he is coming with the clouds,

  247. and every eye will see him. Even those

  248. who pierced him, and all the tribes of

  249. the earth will wail on account of him.

  250. Even so, amen."

  251. In John's gospel chapter 19:37,

  252. the last verse that was read, John

  253. quotes from Zechariah and he says that

  254. the death of Jesus on the cross

  255. fulfilled the scripture that said they

  256. will look on him whom they have pierced.

  257. And John is writing in Revelation that

  258. the day will come when Jesus will return

  259. and every eye will look on him whom they

  260. have pierced.

  261. They will look on him who demonstrated

  262. the sinfulness of people

  263. and who also demonstrated the greater

  264. love of God. The greater love of God

  265. that overcomes sin and enables, as John

  266. says in his gospel, those who receive

  267. him and those who believe in him to

  268. become children of God.

  269. So for us today,

  270. will we be people like John who have the

  271. courage and the faith and the love of

  272. Jesus to stay before the cross and to be

  273. confronted with the truth of our sin and

  274. the truth of God's love and salvation

  275. for us?

  276. Will we recognize ourselves and receive

  277. the truth that we are the beloved of

  278. Jesus and live out our days in the light

  279. of God's love, walking in that love for

  280. ourselves and declaring it to others

  281. that God so loved the world that he gave

  282. his only begotten son that whoever

  283. believes in him should not perish but

  284. have eternal life.

  285. May we do so by God's strength and

  286. grace. Amen.
