  1. May I speak to you in the name of the

  2. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

  3. You may be seated.

  4. Hallelujah. Christ is risen. Lord is

  5. risen indeed. HALLELUJAH.

  6. Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord for he

  7. is victorious.

  8. The one in whom we place all our faith,

  9. the one in whom we put all our trust,

  10. has triumphed.

  11. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, has

  12. overcome. He has overcome everything.

  13. >> Amen.

  14. He has overcome the schemes of the

  15. religious leaders of the Pharisees and

  16. high priests of those who could not

  17. stand to have their religious power

  18. threatened. He has overcome them and has

  19. shown us that true religion is not about

  20. a prideful struggle to maintain power

  21. but is about humbly accepting the grace

  22. of God.

  23. Praise the Lord. Jesus Christ has

  24. overcome.

  25. >> He has overcome the wrath of the Roman

  26. Empire, the most dominant empire the

  27. world had ever seen. An empire that used

  28. violence and coercion to accomplish its

  29. goals.

  30. An empire where the wealthy and the

  31. politically powerful reign supreme. He

  32. has overcome it and shows us that true

  33. power is not found in politics, wealth,

  34. violence or coercion. True power is not

  35. found in empire.

  36. Rather, it is found in the

  37. selfsacrificial

  38. love of the cross. A love that is so

  39. powerful that not even death can defeat

  40. it.

  41. Praise God. Christ our Lord has

  42. overcome.

  43. He has overcome the violence of the

  44. bloodthirsty mob of those who in their

  45. rage demand the death of the poor and

  46. the innocent.

  47. He has overcome them not by resorting to

  48. violence himself,

  49. not by exacting revenge. No, he has

  50. overcome the bloodthirsty mob by showing

  51. us that the kingdom of heaven is made up

  52. of a love that is so radical, so

  53. farreaching that it extends to everyone,

  54. even to one's own enemies, even to those

  55. who would demand that God be killed.

  56. Praise God. Jesus Christ has overcome.

  57. Amen.

  58. >> He has overcome the unfaithfulness of

  59. his disciples,

  60. of those who claim to follow him, but

  61. through greed or cowardice betray him

  62. and abandon him.

  63. He has overcome their betrayal and shows

  64. us that even those who deny him three

  65. times are not outside the scope of

  66. redemption.

  67. >> Praise God.

  68. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, has

  69. overcome.

  70. He has overcome the sin that is in you

  71. and me. He has overcome our pride, our

  72. violence, our bloodlush, blood lust, our

  73. coercion, our greed, our unfaithfulness,

  74. and our betrayal.

  75. He has defeated our sin and has

  76. demonstrated God's own love for us in

  77. this that while we were still sinners,

  78. Jesus Christ died for us. He died for us

  79. and raised from the dead, making a way

  80. for us to be reconciled to God.

  81. Praise God. Jesus Christ is risen

  82. and he has overcome.

  83. He has overcome the grave,

  84. showing us that there is nothing, no

  85. nothing, not even death itself that can

  86. separate us from the all-encompassing,

  87. neverending

  88. love of God. Rejoice,

  89. rejoice, and be glad.

  90. Jesus Christ has indeed overcome through

  91. his death and resurrection. And it is

  92. his death and resurrection that we, the

  93. church, bear witness to. It is his death

  94. and resurrection that we that you

  95. have been baptized into.

  96. And as Paul explains in Romans chapter 6

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  97. that we read tonight in verse in verses

  98. uh four and six, he says, "We were

  99. buried therefore with him by baptism

  100. into death

  101. in order that just as Christ was raised

  102. from the dead by the glory of the

  103. Father, we too might walk in newness of

  104. life. For if we have been united with

  105. him in a death like his, we shall

  106. certainly be united with him in a

  107. resurrection like his.

  108. We know that our old self was crucified

  109. with him in order that the body of sin

  110. might be brought to nothing

  111. so that we would no longer be enslaved

  112. to sin.

  113. Friends, this is the truest thing about

  114. us. We have been baptized into Christ's

  115. victorious death and resurrection.

  116. We have been to united to him.

  117. Therefore, we are free from our old

  118. self, from our sinful self. We are free

  119. from the bondage of sin and can walk in

  120. resurrection.

  121. and Christ we have eternal life not only

  122. in the next life but right now

  123. we are united with Christ right now.

  124. Therefore,

  125. we can live lives that would not be

  126. possible if it wasn't for our baptism

  127. into the death and resurrection of Jesus

  128. Christ.

  129. So go forth into the world. Remember

  130. Christ's death and resurrection.

  131. Remember your baptism.

  132. Remember that you are free from the

  133. bondage of sin and have been united with

  134. Christ.

  135. Remember and live in defiance of the

  136. world, the flesh, and the devil.

  137. In defiance of sin by being people who

  138. are transformed by Christ. Go forth and

  139. live in defiance of darkness

  140. by being people of light.

  141. When the world celebrates the prideful

  142. and the elites, remember that you have

  143. been saved by a poor rabbi from

  144. Nazareth.

  145. When the world demands that you bend the

  146. knee to the power of empire, remember

  147. that Jesus Christ is Lord and no one

  148. else is.

  149. When you feel tempted

  150. to indulge the hatred and blood lust

  151. that lives in each and every one of us,

  152. remember that in your baptism, you have

  153. been united to the prince of peace who

  154. took on the hatred and the violence of

  155. the world and defeated it in his

  156. resurrection.

  157. And when you inevitably fail,

  158. when you find yourself unfaithful and

  159. feel

  160. that you have betrayed our Lord,

  161. remember that no matter what you have

  162. done, no matter how many times you have

  163. failed,

  164. no one is outside the scope of Jesus

  165. Christ's love.

  166. There is no one who cannot be redeemed.

  167. And when you find yourself surrounded by

  168. death, by sickness, tragedy, and war,

  169. remember that there is nothing to fear.

  170. For death

  171. has been swallowed up by the

  172. resurrection of our Lord and Savior.

  173. Even if it seems like the Pharisees of

  174. our day are winning. Even if it feels

  175. like the power of empire is too

  176. overwhelming. Even if it feels as though

  177. violence and hatred rule the day. Even

  178. if it seems like our unfaithfulness is

  179. too significant to be redeemed. And even

  180. though death surrounds us, rejoice and

  181. be glad.

  182. For Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior,

  183. is victorious.

  184. Jesus Christ has triumphed.

  185. Rejoice and remember your baptism and

  186. that you have been made new.

  187. Remember and live in defiance of the

  188. world, the flesh, and the devil.

  189. Remember

  190. that you have been buried and raised

  191. with Christ and are united with him.

  192. Remember that you have been set free

  193. from sin and death. Rejoice and be glad.

  194. And never ever ever forget that on this

  195. night Jesus Christ has overcome.

  196. Amen. Amen.
