  1. Let's pray. Father, I pray that you

  2. would open all of our eyes today that we

  3. might recognize Jesus. I pray that you

  4. open the scriptures to us and cause our

  5. hearts to burn with love and passion and

  6. desire for him. Come, Holy Spirit, grant

  7. us wisdom and revelation to know you

  8. better. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  9. Amen. Please be seated.

  10. As I was reflecting on this passage, I

  11. was reminded of the summer either before

  12. or right after I started seminary. My

  13. home church, our home church in

  14. Charleston, St. James, had a series

  15. during that summer where the recctor

  16. author, Father Arthur, who some of you

  17. have met, just invited some different

  18. preachers to preach on their favorite

  19. passage in scripture, any of them. And

  20. so I remember this was mine and still is

  21. probably one of the top two maybe along

  22. with the transfiguration. My favorite

  23. passage in scripture. It just says so

  24. much about the divinity and the humanity

  25. of Jesus. I think it says so much about

  26. our life of faith walking with Jesus and

  27. with fellow believers in this world.

  28. And I think that as I imagine this

  29. passage, the events happening, I think

  30. Jesus was really enjoying himself as he

  31. walked with these two disciples and then

  32. as he revealed himself and disappeared.

  33. This happens as as Luke tells us and I

  34. encourage you to turn to Luke chapter 24

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  35. in your gospel passages. If we step back

  36. from this, this happens on that morning

  37. of Sunday following the crucifixion that

  38. happened on Friday, following the day of

  39. Jesus being in the tomb. And during that

  40. time, the disciples are hiding in the

  41. upper room. Many of the women are still

  42. there with them.

  43. And it wasn't until that Sunday morning

  44. when the women went to the tomb to

  45. prepare and anoint the body that in

  46. John's gospel, he tells us that Mary

  47. Magdalene encountered Jesus, saw him

  48. alive, and the other women, as Luke and

  49. Matthew tell us, they saw the angels

  50. after seeing the tomb empty and heard

  51. the message of the angels that Jesus

  52. isn't here. He's alive. Go tell the

  53. disciples.

  54. And when you read the gospel passages of

  55. the crucifixion and the visitation to

  56. the tomb, you can see there's at least

  57. three Marys involved, maybe four. It can

  58. become kind of confusing who they are.

  59. Mary, Jesus's mom, was at the tomb.

  60. Another Mary, the mother of James, and

  61. Joseph was there. And then John tells us

  62. in the gospel in chapter 19:2 that Mary,

  63. the wife of Clus, was there as well and

  64. possibly one other Mary.

  65. So the disciples hear the story from

  66. them that Jesus is alive. And Luke is

  67. pretty honest with us in verse 11 of

  68. chapter 24. He tells us these words seem

  69. like an idol tale to them and they

  70. didn't believe the women.

  71. And I imagine and wonder if these two

  72. disciples that then leave Jerusalem to

  73. go back to Emmas where they may have

  74. lived. They're leaving knowing that

  75. Jesus is dead, not believing that he's

  76. alive. We know one of these disciples on

  77. the road is named Cleopus.

  78. In John's gospel, there's no E in the

  79. name. In Luke's gospel, there is an E in

  80. the name. As someone who is often

  81. who's my my last name is often spelled

  82. with an extra E, it would not be

  83. surprising to me if this is the same

  84. Clus. And it wouldn't be surprising to

  85. me that if the other person on the road

  86. to Emmas is his wife Mary, the wife of

  87. Clus. And when you imagine that, and it

  88. could be another guy, another disciple

  89. too, but just think about seven miles

  90. walking on the road with your wife

  91. telling you that they saw angels who

  92. said Jesus is alive and you better

  93. believe it. Jesus comes and walks

  94. alongside of them and saved Cleopus.

  95. Seven miles of listening to his wife

  96. tell him that he needs to believe her.

  97. It didn't save him from the walk back

  98. seven miles to Jerusalem being told, "I

  99. told you so. Jesus is alive." But just

  100. speculation.

  101. But we do know that as they're walking

  102. on the road, they are dejected.

  103. They're desparing. They're frustrated.

  104. I'm sure they're wondering what to do

  105. with their lives now because they admit

  106. to us that this Jesus mighty in word and

  107. deed. They thought he was a prophet.

  108. They thought he was the Messiah, the one

  109. to redeem Israel, and he's dead. Our own

  110. leaders put him to death.

  111. All of their hopes, their investment of

  112. faith, time, their talents, their future

  113. that they imagined is gone in their

  114. minds. It's all gone because Jesus is

  115. dead.

  116. But Jesus comes alongside them, not

  117. allowing them to recognize who he is.

  118. But he knows for sure who he is. And he

  119. knows that he has conquered death. He

  120. has gone through the torture and hell of

  121. the cross and the tomb and he has risen

  122. gloriously alive and he will never die

  123. again and all that he suffered for he

  124. has achieved now at this time.

  125. So he comes along two of his side two of

  126. his friends who are still suffering in

  127. their despair and lack of hope. But he

  128. knows and I just have to believe that

  129. Jesus is really enjoying himself right

  130. now because he knows the victory has

  131. been won. But he doesn't let them know

  132. who he is. And he just sidles up to him

  133. his friends. What are you guys What are

  134. you talking about?

  135. Why do you seem so downcast? Why are you

  136. so upset?

  137. And they then tell Jesus

  138. that Jesus is dead and that's why. Are

  139. you the only one who doesn't know what

  140. happened to Jesus?

  141. I mean, if you don't think Jesus had a

  142. little fun with that,

  143. they're telling Jesus that they he

  144. what's wrong with you?

  145. How can you not know about Jesus?

  146. And then I think light-heartedly, but

  147. maybe serious too, he says, "Oh, foolish

  148. ones.

  149. How slow of heart to believe all that

  150. the prophets have written. All that had

  151. to happen to Jesus."

  152. Now, I think what is true about these

  153. two disciples is true of us. They

  154. believed in Jesus. They saw his mighty

  155. works. They believed he was a prophet of

  156. God. They believed he was the Messiah,

  157. the redeemer of Israel. But at this

  158. moment, they don't believe. They don't

  159. believe in him. They don't believe that

  160. Jesus is alive and with them and can

  161. influence their life anymore. They think

  162. that he's dead.

  163. And we too, maybe all of us or most of

  164. us, believe that Jesus died on the

  165. cross. We even believe that he rose

  166. again and ascended to the right hand of

  167. the father and is given the Holy Spirit

  168. who is with us. But sometimes we may not

  169. believe in Jesus's presence and power

  170. and help for us in our present

  171. situation.

  172. I'll give you an example. Many of you

  173. know that in October we offered the

  174. position of our new music director to a

  175. man from England named Carrie Bowmont.

  176. October is like seven months ago. We've

  177. been waiting this whole time for him to

  178. get approved. He's from England, so he

  179. needed a work visa to come to England.

  180. And as of last week,

  181. I had come to the place where yes, I

  182. believe in Jesus, but I also have to

  183. confess that I came to the place where I

  184. don't think I believe in Jesus for this

  185. process anymore. This bureaucracy might

  186. be beyond him. And what am I going to do

  187. now? What are we going to do if he

  188. doesn't get approved like soon?

  189. Well, the next day, the next morning,

  190. which was Friday, I got a message from

  191. him. He's approved. He's got his R1

  192. visa. So, praise God for that.

  193. And we've been so blessed by Mary Maro

  194. filling in and Cindy and Mark. But it's

  195. just this process. Yeah. Thank you.

  196. And you know, God does it like while I'm

  197. studying this scripture, I'm convicted

  198. that oh my gosh, this is where I have

  199. been. I was I mean, it's just a day

  200. before like God couldn't have helped me

  201. hold out for one more day of believing.

  202. But we do that. We think that because

  203. God hasn't met our expectations of what

  204. we expected and maybe even demanded of

  205. him. Well, yeah, I still believe in him,

  206. but not for this. I've got to work this

  207. out myself or this is too far gone. Or

  208. this is too deep. This is too

  209. impossible. This is too irrelevant to

  210. what the scriptures say.

  211. And then we become downcast. We become

  212. desparing, depressed, or we take it into

  213. our own hands and I'm going to fix this.

  214. But Jesus demonstrates over and over and

  215. over again that he is the God of all

  216. hope and that he will fulfill his

  217. promises to us. He will come through for

  218. us. And that's really what we are

  219. wondering. Jesus, are you going to come

  220. through for me today in this situation?

  221. And he promises that he'll be here with

  222. us. That he will come through because he

  223. is alive. He's conquered everything that

  224. could hinder him coming through for us.

  225. And we do have to be honest and say that

  226. some of those fulfillments will happen

  227. in his presence in the kingdom of heaven

  228. and not in this world.

  229. Because what we know is Jesus appeared

  230. to them. He demonstrated that he was

  231. alive. But 40 days later, he ascended

  232. into heaven.

  233. And we won't see him unless he gives us

  234. a special grace. We won't see him until

  235. we get there. And sometimes we won't see

  236. the total fulfillment of what we are

  237. hoping for until we get there. But God

  238. is the God of all hope and he's given us

  239. the Holy Spirit right now. We can

  240. believe that Jesus is Lord and that we

  241. are not alone in this world apart from

  242. God and his help.

  243. Jesus promised us in John 14:18, I will

    John 14:18

  244. not leave you as orphans. I will come to

  245. you. And he is fulfilling his promise in

  246. this narrative on the road to Emmas. And

  247. I think he is rejoicing in this two and

  248. a half, three hours he spends with these

  249. two disciples talking to them.

  250. I think he enjoys the time that you give

  251. him to really spend with you when you

  252. give him your attention. He enjoys

  253. revealing himself and letting you know

  254. for sure that he is alive and present

  255. through his Holy Spirit. He promises, "I

  256. will not leave you as orphans. I will

  257. come to you." And then in verse 23 of

  258. John 14, Jesus said, "If anyone loves

  259. me, he will keep my word and my father

  260. will love him and we will come to him

  261. and make our home with him."

  262. That's the desire of Jesus and the

  263. father and the holy spirit to come to us

  264. and make their home with us. The desire

  265. of Jesus was to overcome death in the

  266. grave and rise again and walk beside his

  267. disciples. teasing them a little bit,

  268. opening up the scriptures to them,

  269. saying, "Oh, foolish ones, look what it

  270. says. It says the Christ had to suffer."

  271. But it says he'll rise again

  272. and he'll be with you forever.

  273. Jesus says, "Whoever loves me, he will

  274. keep my word and we'll make our home

  275. with them." We can read that and think,

  276. well, gosh, I don't know if I keep his

  277. word. I'm not perfect. I'm sure I slip

  278. and fall. But that's not what Jesus is

  279. saying.

  280. Those who read and study and meditate on

  281. his word, those who have faith in his

  282. word and follow it as best they can by

  283. God's grace, he will come and make his

  284. home with us with them. What we see on

  285. this road to is that to confront their

  286. doubts and the deceptions they believe,

  287. Jesus opens up the scriptures beginning

  288. with Moses, which is the very beginning,

  289. working through the Psalms and the

  290. prophets. He reveals to him to them

  291. himself through the scriptures.

  292. That's what it means. He will reveal to

  293. us through the scriptures himself and he

  294. will manifest himself and make himself

  295. known to us as we read and meditate on

  296. the scriptures.

  297. These folks walked with him seven miles,

  298. two to three hours,

  299. hearing Jesus preach Jesus,

  300. hearing Jesus reveal Jesus to them

  301. through the scriptures, through his

  302. presence with them.

  303. Have we given Jesus the time to do that

  304. in our lives?

  305. When I was at clergy conference in the

  306. beginning of March with some of our

  307. other clergy in the discussions I was

  308. having with other clergy, we were

  309. talking about stress and, you know,

  310. dealing with stress and and and

  311. preventing burnout and that sort of

  312. thing. And one of the priests who's

  313. nicely positioned in Florida right along

  314. the beach said, "Well, every day in the

  315. evening, I try to just go sit on the

  316. beach and just stare at the water and do

  317. nothing for an hour." And man, I was

  318. convicted because I couldn't think of

  319. the last time I just sat and did nothing

  320. in the presence of God. I mean, yes, I

  321. spend time reading the Bible and praying

  322. and being very focused and earnest

  323. about, okay, God, speak. I need a word.

  324. But to just sit and to let God manifest

  325. himself to me and speak to me, I had I

  326. don't even know when the last time I did

  327. that was, but I've tried to do that.

  328. I've made myself just go sit in the

  329. backyard and stare at the trees and say,

  330. "Okay, God, here I am." And I think that

  331. we need to offer the Lord that kind of

  332. time and space to just come and say, "Oh

  333. foolish one, why are you worried? Oh

  334. foolish one, why are you so anxious? Why

  335. are you not believing in me for this

  336. situation?"

  337. and let him reveal himself and make

  338. himself known to us. And and you know,

  339. that's in addition to reading the word

  340. and studying and meditating on scripture

  341. with ourselves and with others. But when

  342. we give Jesus just a little bit of that

  343. two or three hours he had with these

  344. folks, he makes our hearts burn within

  345. us with his presence and with his love.

  346. But what I've noticed in comparison with

  347. that, as we're going about our busy

  348. lives, Jesus, he might be speaking here

  349. and there trying to catch our attention,

  350. but he doesn't have the time and space

  351. he needs and wants above all else to

  352. come and minister to us. We see that as

  353. these two disciples when Jesus has been

  354. revealed to them and they look at one

  355. another and say, "Didn't our hearts burn

  356. within us while he opened the scriptures

  357. to us along the road?

  358. And we need that encouragement from one

  359. another too. As we give Jesus time in

  360. our lives, he will make himself known to

  361. us in such a way that will lead us from

  362. despair to faith and hope.

  363. And this journey for the two disciples

  364. ends with communion at their house.

  365. Jesus again. Jesus just being Jesus who

  366. he is a wonderful loving joyful

  367. fun person in addition to being Lord of

  368. all pretends to that he's going to keep

  369. going. Okay guys, I'll see you later.

  370. Laughing to himself, I'm sure. And they

  371. they they cajul him to coming and

  372. staying with them and breaking bread.

  373. And then as Jesus breaks the bread,

  374. their eyes are open to see him as the

  375. risen Lord. And then he disappears.

  376. I mean, is he a prankster? Is he a

  377. jokester? Is he just having fun? He's

  378. alive. He's been through death. He's

  379. conquered it. He can do anything that he

  380. wants to do. And he loves interacting

  381. with us.

  382. And so these two disciples, they've

  383. walked seven hour, I mean seven miles,

  384. but they've just come to the assurance

  385. that their Lord and Savior, the Messiah,

  386. who they thought was dead, is alive.

  387. They immediately go back out probably in

  388. the dark,

  389. energized supernaturally, and they go

  390. seven miles back to Jerusalem. And at

  391. that time,

  392. the disciples are still locked in the

  393. upper room for fear of the Jews.

  394. But these two have seen Jesus. They have

  395. no more fear and they've had communion

  396. with him. It It's not by accident that g

  397. that Luke describes in his gospel the

  398. breaking of bread and how Jesus blessed

  399. and gave thanks over the bread. He gave

  400. Eucharist

  401. and in that their eyes were open and

  402. they encouraged one another in the

  403. presence of the Lord and in their faith.

  404. The same thing happens here at our

  405. table. Every Sunday the Lord reveals

  406. himself in the Eucharist in the giving

  407. of thanks and we come together to

  408. encourage one another and be encouraged

  409. by the Lord that he is alive and he's

  410. given himself for us.

  411. And then from here we go with that

  412. assurance, with that supernatural energy

  413. and grace to go and share the gospel.

  414. Just like these two, running back to

  415. Jerusalem on that locked door where the

  416. disciples are inside scared, still

  417. mulling over those idle tales told to

  418. them by the women that Jesus was alive.

  419. These two going bang on that door. And

  420. you can just imagine them banging on

  421. that door, scaring the heck out of

  422. everyone who's in there.

  423. But it's not the rulers coming to arrest

  424. them. It's their friends coming to tell

  425. them, "Jesus is alive. Open the door.

  426. >> He's alive."

  427. And then, of course, Jesus comes in the

  428. door later and shows up again. Just

  429. showing up. Do you have anything to eat?

  430. Jesus really loves us.

  431. Jesus really enjoys interacting with us

  432. and he desires it. And I don't think

  433. there's anything better we can

  434. experience than the manifestation, the

  435. expressions of Jesus in our lives

  436. together. And he is here and he's alive

  437. and he's just waiting

  438. for you and me to give him our attention

  439. with nothing else happening and say,

  440. "Jesus, come and make yourself known to

  441. me. Open up the scriptures to me. make

  442. my heart burn with your love and with

  443. passion for you

  444. and encourage us all with the breaking

  445. of the bread and help us to go out and

  446. tell everyone that it's true.

  447. Those crazy tales that people have told,

  448. it's true. He's alive

  449. and he wants to appear through the

  450. spirit and through his word to all of

  451. you and everyone out there.

  452. So I pray and I will pray right now that

  453. what will be true of our church is what

  454. was true and written about the church in

  455. the book of Acts that we just read. That

  456. every day the Lord will add to our

  457. number those who are being saved

  458. because he's died for every one of them

  459. and welcomes them into his salvation. So

  460. let's pray.

  461. Father, we thank you for Jesus Christ,

  462. our Lord. And Jesus, we thank you and

  463. praise you that you have overcome death

  464. and sin and the devil

  465. and risen again and are seated at the

  466. right hand of the father and that you

  467. have sent the Holy Spirit to fill us and

  468. to give us salvation in the kingdom of

  469. heaven today.

  470. Make yourself known to us. make our

  471. hearts burn with passion for you and

  472. passion to tell the message that you are

  473. alive. And I pray that in your goodness

  474. and grace, you work through us to save

  475. others and add them to the body of

  476. Christ. Amen.
