  1. Let us pray.

  2. Father, come to us and be present

  3. through your Holy Spirit through the

  4. preaching of the gospel. Lord, apply

  5. your word to our hearts and fulfill your

  6. purpose for all of us, oh God, this

  7. morning through Jesus Christ and by the

  8. Holy Spirit. Amen. Please be seated.

  9. Man, what wonderful scriptures we have

  10. to meditate on today. The Romans passage

  11. is one of my favorite. Romans 5 verses

    Romans 5:1

  12. 1-1.

  13. When I was in seminary about 18 years

  14. ago, I had a class just on Romans taught

  15. by the Reverend Dr. Rod Whitaker. And at

  16. the end of that class, after going all

  17. through Romans, we had to write a paper

  18. on a any particular text. We could

  19. choose any. And this was the text that

  20. stood out to me. Romans 5 1-11 because

  21. in it the whole gospel I think is

  22. expressed God's message is good news the

  23. benefits for us there was also another

  24. reason and that was because through that

  25. text especially Romans 1 5 1-5 was

  26. probably the first

  27. text that like God really spoke to me in

  28. a particular way and it was when I was a

  29. junior at the Citadel And

  30. it was spring semester. I was an English

  31. major and had to stack some classes. So

  32. I had all these papers to write that I

  33. didn't want to write. I was burned out.

  34. I think I had met Missy by then and my

  35. mind was elsewhere as you can imagine.

  36. And then my grandfather passed away

  37. right at that time as when all these

  38. things were due and I was feeling really

  39. overwhelmed and one of those cases where

  40. you're a little burned out and you just

  41. don't want to care about school. And I

  42. went to the chapel at the Citadel right

  43. there on campus. Beautiful big cathedral

  44. style chapel with stained glass windows

  45. all around. And I went, you know,

  46. towards the front, sat in there for a

  47. few minutes and prayed and then got up

  48. to walk out. And through one of the

  49. stained glass windows toward the back of

  50. the church where the baptismal font is

  51. in the back, it was like all of the rays

  52. of the sunlight was focused on one

  53. little pane at the bottom of that

  54. stained glass window. And as I

  55. approached it, I saw that that little

  56. pain at the at the bottom was just the

  57. word hope. And it was like all the sun

  58. was coming right through there. This the

  59. light saying hope. And I got back to my

  60. room and was led one way or another to

  61. Romans chapter 5 and got to the verse

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  62. verse four where Paul writes, "Endurance

  63. produces character and character

  64. produces hope and hope does not put us

  65. to shame because God's love has been

  66. poured into our hearts through the Holy

  67. Spirit who has been given to us." And

  68. there was hope. And that really caught

  69. my attention because I had just come

  70. from the chapel and I was reading the

  71. NIV I think at the time that says hope

  72. does not disappoint us because God's

  73. spirit has been God's love has been

  74. poured into our hearts through the

  75. spirit. And it was like God was telling

  76. me, listen, depend on me. Seek me. Pray

  77. to me. I'm gonna come through for you.

  78. I'm not going to disappoint you. and I

  79. was able to trust in him for all the

  80. papers and go and be with my family and

  81. my grandma during that time of grief.

  82. She lived in Illinois, so that's where I

  83. went for about a week and somehow got

  84. the papers done and graduated cuz here I

  85. am.

  86. But I always remember Romans 5 for that

  87. time that God really spoke to me. And so

  88. in it is the gospel. And there's

  89. especially, I think, three items that

  90. are emphasized by Paul. And it's the

  91. same three that he emphasizes at the

  92. bottom or the conclusion of 1

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  93. Corinthians chapter 13, the love

  94. chapter. These three remain, faith,

  95. hope, and love. And the greatest is

  96. love. We see these in this passage,

  97. Romans 5, beginning in verse one. Paul

  98. says, "Therefore, since we have been

  99. justified by faith, we have peace with

  100. God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  101. Through Jesus, we have peace.

  102. Peace with God. That's the big one. We

  103. as sinners have peace with a holy God.

  104. And having peace with God enables his

  105. peace to dwell in us and for us to be at

  106. peace and to have peace. And I'll talk

  107. more about peace when we look at the

  108. gospel. Paul goes on and says, "Through

  109. him, through Jesus, we have also

  110. obtained access by faith into this grace

  111. in which we stand. We experience that

  112. peace by the grace of God that our faith

  113. brings us into and we stand in his

  114. grace." So this is a question. Are you

  115. standing? Do you stand in God's grace?

  116. Think about that. I hope all of us,

  117. maybe this morning, hopefully not in the

  118. too distant past, took a shower

  119. and we stepped into the shower and we

  120. stood in the shower water, probably

  121. warm, hot, and just let it wash over us.

  122. And we stood there knowing that, man,

  123. this water feels good. I'm being clean.

  124. This is great. That's how we need to

  125. approach God's grace and by faith in

  126. him. Come into his grace and stand in

  127. his grace more often than we do. I think

  128. more often than I do, just let his grace

  129. wash over me because his grace is his

  130. favor. It's his goodness. It's his

  131. acceptance and affirmation toward us.

  132. And we need to let that wash over us

  133. over and over and over again because it

  134. washes away all the lies, all the

  135. condemnation, the accusation, the

  136. thoughts of failure, self-hatred,

  137. burdens, and anxieties that come to us

  138. from this world that are like

  139. anti-grace.

  140. By faith, we have peace with God and

  141. stand in grace.

  142. And Paul goes on, "And we rejoice in

  143. hope of the glory of God." Not only

  144. that, but we rejoice in our sufferings,

  145. knowing that suffering produces

  146. endurance, and endurance produces

  147. character, and character produces hope,

  148. and hope does not put us to shame. It

  149. does not disappoint us. We can rejoice

  150. in whatever we experience in this fallen

  151. world because we know that we have this

  152. hope that is sure. The hope that we have

  153. is in the glory of God and our eternity

  154. with him in his glory where all is

  155. perfect. All is set right. All of our

  156. needs are met. All of our pain is gone.

  157. All of our anxieties are lifted. Our

  158. soul, our body is made perfect in

  159. Christ's image. That's our hope through

  160. Christ. That's why even when it doesn't

  161. go well with us in this life, when we

  162. experience burdens and trials, we can

  163. rejoice in those sufferings because we

  164. know we're on a tra trajectory toward

  165. God's paradise where we will be with him

  166. forever. So, we can rejoice even in

  167. suffering because we have hope.

  168. And then he goes on to say that this

  169. hope does not disappoint us. It doesn't

  170. put us to shame. It's not going to let

  171. us down. It's not going to backfire on

  172. us. We're not going to have the rug of

  173. hope pulled out from under us because

  174. God's love has been poured into our

  175. hearts through the Holy Spirit has been

  176. given to us. He is saying you can have

  177. peace. You can rejoice. You can have

  178. hope because God's love has been poured

  179. into our hearts by the Holy Spirit has

  180. been given to us. This is something we

  181. have now. The substance of God's love in

  182. us through the Holy Spirit. If we have

  183. the Holy Spirit in us, we have eternal

  184. life. We have God's love. And that love

  185. is unfailing. It's never ending. It's

  186. not going to be taken away. It will be

  187. fulfilled in his presence forever.

  188. And it has been poured into our hearts.

  189. And down in verse eight, God describes

  190. this love. God's love was demonstrated

  191. to us in that while we were yet sinners

  192. Christ died for us to know God's love to

  193. know what it is like we look at the

  194. cross Jesus Christ crucified that

  195. suffering and that pain for us that is

  196. his love that is the love that is poured

  197. into our hearts through the very

  198. presence of love God the Holy Spirit

  199. and that's something too that is

  200. something too that we need to stand in.

  201. And as we would turn on a faucet and let

  202. a water bucket or pan fill up and we

  203. leave it in the sink and it's all messy,

  204. so we're going to let it soak there for

  205. a while and it's just the water

  206. overflows it. We need to set our hearts

  207. before the Lord daily and oftentimes in

  208. a day and say, "God, fill me up with

  209. your love. Pour your love a new into my

  210. heart till it is running over with your

  211. love. So I experience your love for me

  212. and I give your love for others because

  213. this world will block that love. It will

  214. oppress it. It will weigh it down.

  215. It'll harden our hearts so that the love

  216. can't pour into it. Of course, God can

  217. heal our hearts and that's what his love

  218. does. But we need to be filled up with

  219. that love.

  220. And this is all that we experience in

  221. God's kingdom through Jesus. And this is

  222. what Jesus demonstrates in our gospel

  223. reading. He is demonstrating God's love.

  224. He is demonstrating the power of God to

  225. come into this world and give people

  226. peace, to give people hope and joy, and

  227. to give people his love.

  228. Jesus describes it as this is the

  229. kingdom of God. This is the kingdom of

  230. heaven. A better way to describe it

  231. might be this is God's rule that has

  232. come. This is God's absolute sovereignty

  233. that has come into the world. God is not

  234. coming to just make another nation of

  235. the world. He's not coming to just

  236. create a people in the world to compare

  237. and compete with other nations. You

  238. know, we have that happening right now

  239. between the United States and Iran,

  240. Ukraine and Russia and other conflicts

  241. in the world where one nation is trying

  242. to prove itself stronger to get what it

  243. wants over the other nation. That is not

  244. what the rule of God is like. The rule

  245. of God is absolute overall. And when his

  246. kingdom fully comes, there will be

  247. nothing else. There will be no other

  248. rebellious or competing rules and

  249. authorities. His kingdom is absolute.

  250. And Jesus is saying it is here through

  251. his presence. And then he goes on to

  252. demonstrate the presence of the kingdom

  253. of heaven. Matthew tells us a couple

  254. times in his gospel

  255. here. He tells us that Jesus came and he

  256. preached the good news of the kingdom.

  257. It's good news because this one who

  258. created all things and who is sovereign

  259. is loving and he is kind and he is

  260. forgiving and he is a father who is

  261. calling children back to him. And Jesus

  262. demonstrated that by healing every

  263. disease and every affliction.

  264. That's the power of the kingdom. He is

  265. showing that yes this kingdom overcomes

  266. everything. It overcomes every curse of

  267. sin and death manifest in sickness. that

  268. overcomes all the power of the evil one

  269. manifesting in possession and

  270. oppression.

  271. And Matthew tells us and when Jesus came

  272. into this world and he saw those people

  273. for whom he would die, whom he loves,

  274. says he had compassion on them, Jesus

  275. had compassion for them, for the crowds.

  276. Crowds like us, he has compassion. And

  277. this is probably one of the most

  278. understatements

  279. in literature. Jesus had compassion.

  280. The the the word that is trying that

  281. compassion is trying to describe is not

  282. enough. That or the movement of Jesus.

  283. Jesus was moved in the fullness of his

  284. being for these people that he saw. He

  285. was moved with love and passion. He was

  286. moved with anger and frustration. He was

  287. so moved that he went to the cross to

  288. die. It's so much more than how we think

  289. of compassion,

  290. which can sometimes just be impotent in

  291. our day today. We have compassion, but

  292. it doesn't move us to do anything.

  293. I shared this with 8:00. Nobody really

  294. knew what I was talking about. But who

  295. here I'm going to go for it again

  296. because I like it. Who here knows Punch

  297. the Monkey of Punch the Monkey? All

  298. right, Titus. Elelliana, don't don't be

  299. ashamed. Callum, I know Meline does. All

  300. right. Is that Holly? Punch the monkey

  301. is a little cute monkey in Japan and he

  302. became a viral sensation. Well, I it

  303. became one for me because Meline sent me

  304. info about Punch the Monkeys. This

  305. little monkey that was put in an

  306. enclosure. He was an orphan. All the

  307. other monkeys bullied him and neglected

  308. him and ostracized him. So they gave him

  309. a stuffed animal and he just went around

  310. with his stuffed animal being pushed and

  311. bullied by the other monkeys. And all

  312. these people saw that online and they

  313. had compassion for Punch the monkey. Oh,

  314. poor Punch. If I could, I would go there

  315. and adopt him. But nobody did anything

  316. for him. I mean, the people there took

  317. care of him and thankfully he has some

  318. friends and I think a girlfriend now.

  319. There was one guy who jumped in there to

  320. save Punch and he's he got arrested and

  321. is probably in a Japanese prison. This

  322. is what we think of too often when we

  323. describe compassion.

  324. It's so

  325. much less than what Jesus felt when he

  326. saw the crowds. This is God who was so

  327. moved that he left the glory of heaven

  328. to come down and suffer as a man because

  329. of what he experienced in his being when

  330. he saw the crowds

  331. because they were harassed and helpless

  332. like sheep without a shepherd and he

  333. came to be the shepherd. These two words

  334. harassed and helpless are also

  335. understated. That word there describing

  336. the crowds as harassed, they were

  337. literally torn and ripped apart. They

  338. were rent. They were being abused and

  339. manipulated and rent apart in their

  340. souls and spirits. They were desperate.

  341. The term helpless there is like cast

  342. down with nobody to help. A few weeks

  343. ago, Peter shared in his sermon about

  344. another viral sensation. The sheep that

  345. got stuck in a ditch and the shepherd

  346. pulled it out of the ditch that was

  347. really tight and let him loose and then

  348. he hopped a couple times, went right

  349. back in the ditch.

  350. Jesus sees these people as downcast and

  351. stuck and oppressed with nobody to help

  352. them out. And he comes,

  353. he comes to be the shepherd to heal, to

  354. deliver, and to save. And he is so moved

  355. that he knows he needs other workers.

  356. And so he encourages his followers to

  357. pray for laborers to go into that

  358. harvest and to do what he has been doing

  359. and to proclaim that same message. And

  360. he calls those 12

  361. that mly crew.

  362. He calls to himself and they're all

  363. Jewish men because of what he was doing.

  364. But there probably couldn't be a more

  365. diverse group of Jewish men possibly

  366. than these guys. And they all come and

  367. they're just like us. no special

  368. abilities except Jesus gives them the

  369. authority of the kingdom of God and they

  370. go out and preach the gospel and heal

  371. and deliver and even raise the dead

  372. because of the authority of God's

  373. kingdom that he gave them to go into the

  374. world and exercise God's rule and reign.

  375. This is the power of God's kingdom. This

  376. is the salvation of God's kingdom. It

  377. saves forever. And so they go out to

  378. proclaim the kingdom of heaven or the

  379. rule of God is at hand. And then they

  380. too demonstrate it. And all that they

  381. demonstrate and all that Jesus tells

  382. them is what is true of God's kingdom.

  383. There is no sickness in his kingdom.

  384. There is no evil spirit in God's kingdom

  385. in heaven. The paradise of God where

  386. through Christ we are headed. There is

  387. no war. There's no leprosy.

  388. There's no anxiety or fear. There's no

  389. need. There's no need for gold. There's

  390. no need for extra bags and belts,

  391. tunics, and sandals. All is made new

  392. there. All is provided. It's a paradise.

  393. And he's demonstrating that this kingdom

  394. has come into the world.

  395. And we still suffer some of that

  396. sickness. We still suffer some of the

  397. fallenness of the world. But he's

  398. showing us that in God's kingdom for

  399. eternity, these will be gone.

  400. And even now, we can experience some of

  401. the blessings of that kingdom. And one

  402. of those is God's peace.

  403. He tells his people, "As you enter the

  404. house, greet it. And if the house is

  405. worthy, let your peace come upon it. But

  406. if not, if it is not worthy, let your

  407. peace return to you."

  408. Even now, God's kingdom gives us peace

  409. through Jesus Christ. peace to have.

  410. It's almost like he tells them not to

  411. take an extra tunic or staff, but

  412. they're taking peace.

  413. They're holding on to their peace that

  414. God has given them. And this is, I

  415. think, an insight for us, what he tells

  416. them. If you find a house that is worthy

  417. and they welcome you, let your peace

  418. rest there. But if they reject you, let

  419. your peace return to you.

  420. Are you letting your peace return to you

  421. from this world? Or has your peace been

  422. scattered out into the world so that

  423. it's not full within you? When you have

  424. your peace and then you read some news

  425. and it gives you some anxiety and

  426. there's a little bit of your peace

  427. going. You have your car break down and

  428. there's a little bit of your peace

  429. going. Someone's mean to you and there's

  430. a little bit of your peace going. you

  431. have a diagnosis or you don't feel bad,

  432. you don't feel good physically and

  433. there's a little bit of your peace

  434. going. It happens to us and our peace

  435. can be dissolved and it flitters away.

  436. We have to come into the Lord and let

  437. him fill our peace up again. But also,

  438. we need to let our peace return to us.

  439. We can't allow the news of the world to

  440. take our peace because the news of a

  441. fallen world is going to continually

  442. tempt us with anxiety and fear. We have

  443. to let our peace return to us and not

  444. let the world take the peace that Jesus

  445. has given to us.

  446. And that's what he tells his disciples

  447. and it's something for us to bear in

  448. mind. When you notice something disrupts

  449. your peace, get it back. Get it back

  450. through prayer. get it back through the

  451. ministry of the Lord and his word.

  452. Jesus also tells them, "Truly I say to

  453. you, it will be more bearable on the day

  454. of judgment for those who rejected the

  455. message of the gospel, the message of

  456. Jesus, the message of the kingdom of

  457. heaven, than for the land of Sodom and

  458. Gomorrah."

  459. The gospel includes a day of judgment

  460. because there is a day when the kingdom

  461. is going to come in full and all that is

  462. not of the kingdom, it will dissolve. It

  463. will go away and only that which is part

  464. of the kingdom will remain.

  465. Only that which is through Christ

  466. will remain in that kingdom. Whenever

  467. the gospel is preached in the New

  468. Testament, judgment is preached also.

  469. Even Paul when he went to Athens in Acts

  470. 17 and he concludes his sermon by saying

  471. that God has appointed a man to be

  472. judged and has confirmed it by raising

  473. him from the dead. The gospel includes a

  474. final day of judgment. So all of those

  475. unjust things we see in the world that

  476. can make us so anxious and upset, there

  477. will be a day of justice. There will be

  478. a day when all is set right, where God

  479. needs to exercise vengeance. He will

  480. exercise vengeance. Where he needs to

  481. exercise mercy, he will exercise mercy.

  482. The gospels are telling us we can trust

  483. him with all of that and have peace and

  484. rejoice in our hope and be filled with

  485. the love of God and carry that love in

  486. this world and be vessels of it. And

  487. sometimes that love and the power of God

  488. will manifest in healing and in

  489. deliverance. and even some places the

  490. dead will be raised.

  491. But it will all point to the king and

  492. the kingdom who has come and is coming.

  493. So I want to encourage you as we close

  494. to commit yourself to two things. One is

  495. being a laborer in that harvest and the

  496. other is praying to the Lord of the

  497. harvest to send out labors. For whatever

  498. reason, God has called his people today,

  499. just like he called the twel apostles to

  500. go out. He has called us to go out and

  501. to share this message. And the harvest,

  502. he says, is plentiful.

  503. Which means two things. One is that

  504. everyone out there needs this message

  505. because everyone out there is one for

  506. whom Christ died. And the second thing,

  507. there is a readiness in that harvest

  508. of people who when they hear will say

  509. yes and all of heaven will rejoice. So

  510. let's pray for labors and commit

  511. ourselves to being labors. We will have

  512. and you can see this in the back of your

  513. order of worship. We'll have an

  514. evangelism training later this year in

  515. September that isn't going to be a

  516. burden. It's not going to be scary. It's

  517. just going to share show us how to share

  518. Jesus winsomely with all which is I

  519. think what we really all want to do tell

  520. people about Jesus. So plan on go ahead

  521. and register for it and let's pray

  522. and father we thank you that we have

  523. been justified by faith and grace and

  524. have peace with you through Jesus

  525. Christ. Help us to walk in that peace

  526. guarding our hearts and minds. Lord,

  527. whenever we that peace leaves us even

  528. just a little bit, show us and quicken

  529. us to restore it to let our peace return

  530. to us. And Father, you are the God of

  531. all hope. So may we abound in hope. May

  532. we rejoice in hope in good times and in

  533. bad, in your glory and in our suffering.

  534. And father, you are the God who is love

  535. and you have demonstrated that love on

  536. the cross. Pour that love into our

  537. hearts by the Holy Spirit and help us to

  538. be ambassadors of your kingdom.

  539. All for your glory and your purposes.

  540. Amen.
