  1. Let us pray.

  2. God, we thank you for the presence of

  3. your Holy Spirit with us. Come, Holy

  4. Spirit, fill us, confirm to us this day

  5. that we are your sons and daughters and

  6. inspire our prayers and give us life, O

  7. Lord, we ask through Jesus Christ our

  8. Lord. Amen.

  9. >> Amen.

  10. >> Please be seated.

  11. Our

  12. scriptures today of Isaiah 55 and Romans

  13. 8 and Matthew 13 are full of life and

  14. the good news of Christ. And upon

  15. returning from a week at Lamb Institute

  16. in Honduras, I feel like my heart and

  17. soul are full of life, full of the good

  18. news of gospel because of the time that

  19. we spent as a team together and also in

  20. the midst of such a godly place and

  21. people as Lamb Institute and I am full

  22. and overflowing after this trip and in

  23. fact that was one of our prayers during

  24. the trip is that God would just keep

  25. pouring into us that he wouldn't stop

  26. that we would overflow.

  27. with his love and with his presence. And

  28. we appreciate all of your prayers for us

  29. while we were in Honduras. God, I think,

  30. answered every one of them. We were

  31. healthy. We were energized. It was a

  32. extraordinary experience of definitely

  33. being blessed and I think of being a

  34. blessing. And this trip I worked in the

  35. garden some. The last year's trip some

  36. of us were down at the bottom of the

  37. hill working on a wall which was

  38. beautiful to see how they completed it.

  39. But this year I went to the top of the

  40. mountain to the garden and discovered a

  41. nice cool breeze and a wonderful view

  42. that I had missed out on last year. And

  43. we spent a few days up there gardening

  44. in this wonderful garden that they have.

  45. while meditating on this gospel passage

  46. of the seed and the the sewer and the

  47. seeds. I feel like God gave me insights

  48. from the work that we were doing and

  49. what we saw there. And so we'll share

  50. some of that as we go through this

  51. gospel passage. One of the insights that

  52. seems pretty obvious that God really

  53. impressed upon me as I meditated on this

  54. passage this time is how this is a

  55. passage that I'd so often read about the

  56. seed in my own heart. And it's up to me.

  57. It's about me and my relationship with

  58. God and what I do. And it is about that,

  59. but it's so much also about our life

  60. together and how we together receive and

  61. protect and nurture the seeds that are

  62. planted in our own hearts and in all of

  63. our hearts together. And that was really

  64. something that we experienced and I

  65. experienced this past week as our team

  66. of 11 people gathered each morning for

  67. morning prayer at Kasa Lamb where we

  68. were staying. We had times of prayer in

  69. the morning in addition to the morning

  70. prayer liturgy where we prayed for all

  71. of you, for our families, for our work.

  72. And we always started 45 minutes before

  73. whatever time we were having breakfast

  74. that day. So we started anywhere from

  75. 6:15 to 6:45. And I always tried to get

  76. down there early, enjoy the cool breeze

  77. there on the on the patio in the back

  78. and spend time alone with God. And I

  79. always woke up early thinking, I'm gonna

  80. beat everyone down there. And I never

  81. did. There was always one of our team

  82. who was there praying, reading the

  83. scriptures, reflecting, meditating on

  84. what God was saying. And it was a

  85. delight and always, you know, a little

  86. challenge, too. But it it revealed to me

  87. like that's the way that we receive and

  88. nurture God's word. We spend time on our

  89. own with the Lord and we spend time

  90. together with the Lord and with his word

  91. and in prayer and encouraging one

  92. another and being encouraged.

  93. Something else that really struck me

  94. about our life together and how God has

  95. brought us together in a family of faith

  96. for his purposes is a question that was

  97. given to Caris Warner who was with us

  98. last year and this year by Lety who is

  99. the daughter of the founder of Lamb

  100. Institute. She's the daughter of Susie

  101. McCall. Letty's about 31 and she is at

  102. the house with us. She goes to all of

  103. the activities with us. She gets to know

  104. us very well. And this week she asked

  105. Caris about her grandma and where was

  106. her grandma and why wasn't her

  107. grandmother on the trip this year. And

  108. Cara said, "Well, who are you talking

  109. about?" Cuz her grandma didn't come last

  110. year. And Letty, who knows us so well

  111. now, had seen the relationship between

  112. Caris and Claudia and just assumed that

  113. because they were so close, Claudia was

  114. her grandmother. And for those of you

  115. who don't know, Claudia Thomas went with

  116. us last year in his Caris's

  117. grandmother's age and was is just so

  118. caring and wonderful. And so it was

  119. perceived that they were grandmother and

  120. granddaughter. And this year that

  121. happened as Peter and Sebastian were

  122. working up in the garden. The man Ariel

  123. who stays there is Honduran who works in

  124. the garden asked Peter about his son.

  125. And at that time it was, "Where is your

  126. son?

  127. because he had disappeared from sight

  128. just for a minute. He was safe. But he

  129. had seen Sebastian and Peter working

  130. together and talking together and

  131. thought they were father and son. And I

  132. thought, man, that is such a wonderful

  133. image of God working among us. And it

  134. wasn't just in our team, but it's also

  135. between us and the children and the

  136. youth and the adults who work at Lamb.

  137. God just brings us together in such love

  138. and care as he builds his family of

  139. faith in his kingdom. And so the parable

  140. about the sewer and the seed, it's not

  141. just about us and the seed as

  142. individuals. It's about us as the body

  143. of Christ and the family of faith coming

  144. together. In this parable, Jesus tells

  145. the he tells us that in the parable and

  146. the other parables, he is revealing to

  147. us the secrets of the king kingdom of

  148. heaven hidden from the foundations of

  149. the world. In verse 10 of Matthew 13,

  150. when his disciples come to him after he

  151. told the parable, he says, "To you it

  152. has been given to know the secrets of

  153. the kingdom of heaven.

  154. What has been hidden from the foundation

  155. of the world?" He elaborates later. So

  156. this parable, it is wonderful. It's

  157. remarkable. It is the secrets of the

  158. kingdom of heaven. It is the unfolding

  159. of the mystery of God hidden from the

  160. foundations of the world today made

  161. known to us through Christ and his word.

  162. And we enter into that.

  163. As Jesus began this parable, he

  164. emphasizes the seed is the word of God

  165. that produces fruit, the fruit of the

  166. spirit and the word of God given giving

  167. wisdom and other attributes. This week

  168. at Lamb, we were able to visit two

  169. schools. One called Joy Academy, which

  170. is the day school near the large home

  171. that is in the rural area in the hills.

  172. We also were able to visit the school

  173. while the kids were in school in a place

  174. called Florida Campo which is an urban

  175. in inner city area where they have 300

  176. students that come to school and we're

  177. able to participate in devotionals at

  178. both places which was an extraordinary

  179. experience to see God working among

  180. these children and through their

  181. teachers and leaders. Both of those

  182. emphasize the seed of God and the

  183. results of God's seed being his word.

  184. One the the leader talked about how we

  185. can put the seed of God's word in our

  186. heart and it will produce the fruit of

  187. the spirit or we can put other things in

  188. our heart that will produce other

  189. destructive things. At the other

  190. devotional they emphasize how the word

  191. of God brings about wisdom. The

  192. beginning the growth of wisdom. Both of

  193. them in congruence with Jesus's parable

  194. emphasize the word of God being the seed

  195. that we need to put in our hearts. But

  196. Jesus shows some of the obstacles to

  197. that. The first one he says when anyone

  198. hears the word of God and does not

  199. understand it, the evil one comes and

  200. snatches away what has been sown in his

  201. heart. This is one of the secrets of the

  202. kingdom of heaven. We have an enemy. The

  203. spiritual forces of evil, the devil and

  204. all of his demons that come against us

  205. to steal God's word to prevent its

  206. fruit, to prevent us experiencing the

  207. life of Christ individually and

  208. together.

  209. There is an evil one. During our time in

  210. Honduras, each day in the evening, we

  211. studied Ephesians, a chapter each

  212. evening, and concluding that with

  213. chapter 16 and Paul's teaching about the

  214. spiritual force of evil whom we should

  215. be wrestling and battling and standing

  216. firm against with the whole armor of God

  217. on

  218. because he comes. He comes to steal the

  219. seed of God's word and prevent its

  220. fruitfulness. This is what he's been

  221. doing from the beginning. In Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  222. chapter 3, the serpent comes, Satan, and

  223. he says to Eve, "Did God actually say,

  224. etc., etc." And immediately he comes to

  225. undermine and to steal the word that God

  226. had said to Adam and Eve. He did the

  227. same thing to Jesus when Jesus following

  228. his baptism went into the wilderness

  229. where he was tempted by Satan. And Satan

  230. tempted him by trying to steal the word

  231. that God had just spoken at his baptism.

  232. You are my son whom I love. With you I'm

  233. well pleased. Immediately Satan comes

  234. and says, "If you're the son of God,

  235. then do this." God's word says, "If you

  236. cast yourself down, his angels will take

  237. you up."

  238. Is that really true? Test and see if it

  239. is. He tries to undermine and steal the

  240. word. And he does the same thing today.

  241. trying to take our reliance, our trust,

  242. our faith in God's word away so that we

  243. fall for any of his lies and deceptions.

  244. Our response is instructed for us in

  245. Isaiah's reading Isaiah 55 beginning in

  246. verse 6. God says through the prophet,

  247. "Seek the Lord while he may be found.

  248. Call upon him while he is near. Let the

  249. wicked forsake his way and the

  250. unrighteous man his thoughts. let him

  251. return to the Lord that he may have

  252. compassion on him and to our God for he

  253. will abundantly pardon. And that is such

  254. good news. When we turn to God, he's not

  255. angry. He doesn't punish us. He has

  256. compassion and he pardons us. No matter

  257. how far we've gone, no matter how long

  258. we have strayed, when we return and we

  259. seek him, he has compassion and pardon

  260. for us. And he says to us to confirm

  261. even in Isaiah the power of his word. He

  262. says, "For my thoughts are not your

  263. thoughts. Neither are your ways my ways,

  264. declares the Lord. For as the heavens

  265. are higher than the earth, so are my

  266. ways higher than your ways, and my

  267. thoughts and your thoughts. For as the

  268. rain and the snow come down from heaven,

  269. and do not return, but water the earth,

  270. making it bring forth and sprout, giving

  271. seed to the swer and bread to the eater.

  272. So shall my word that goes out from my

  273. mouth, it shall not return to me empty,

  274. but shall accomplish that which I

  275. purpose and shall succeed in the thing

  276. for which I sent it. So important for

  277. God's word to take root in our heart

  278. that it might accomplish God's purpose

  279. for speaking it and bring it to life in

  280. us that it would bear fruit and produce

  281. a harvest. And that's why the devil

  282. wants to steal it away. Wants us to

  283. ignore it, to be too busy, too

  284. distracted to focus on God's word, to

  285. believe his lies.

  286. The value of studying the Bible

  287. individually and together is manifest

  288. among us when we do it, when we protect

  289. and nurture that seed.

  290. Paul or Jesus goes on to give another

  291. thing that can happen to the word. He

  292. says that as for what was sewn on rocky

  293. ground, this is the one who hears the

  294. word and immediately receives it with

  295. joy, yet has no root in himself, but

  296. endures for a while. And when

  297. tribulation or persecution arises on

  298. account of the word, immediately he

  299. falls away. We must till our hearts and

  300. put the seed deep in our heart and soul

  301. so that it will take root and bring

  302. life.

  303. Because what we know is that Jesus has

  304. promised that tribulation that trouble

  305. sometimes persecution will come in this

  306. world and if our the word of God does

  307. not have root in our heart when that

  308. tribulation or persecution comes we will

  309. soon doubt God's word and think that we

  310. have to go another way we'll lose our

  311. trust in God and think that we have to

  312. trust in ourselves that we have to take

  313. control that we have to

  314. plate people and subordinate ourselves

  315. to what other people and the world want

  316. and that causes the word to blow away

  317. from our lives and bear no fruit. Paul

  318. writes in our passage from Romans in

  319. Romans 8:6 he says to set the mind on

    Romans 8:6

  320. the flesh is death but to set the mind

  321. on the spirit is life and peace. When we

  322. set our mind on the spirit, we

  323. experience the life and peace of God.

  324. And that life and peace of God assures

  325. us that we are his, that his word is

  326. true. But if we go along according to

  327. the sinful nature, according to our own

  328. desires and indulgences,

  329. we won't know the life and peace of God,

  330. and we'll doubt his word. We'll doubt

  331. his presence. But when we believe God's

  332. word and we believe that we are who God

  333. says we are, we won't give up that

  334. truth. We won't give up our relationship

  335. with God. No matter what comes against

  336. us, we will have built our life on his

  337. word. And no matter what storms come

  338. against us, that house will stand.

  339. Paul says further in Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  340. that God's spirit dwells in us and gives

  341. us life. He says, "You have received the

  342. spirit of adoption as sons by whom we

  343. cry, aba, father." The spirit himself

  344. bears witness with our spirit that we

  345. are children of God. And if children,

  346. then heirs, heirs of God and fellows

  347. with Christ, provided we suffer with him

  348. in order that we may also be glorified

  349. with him. As we set our minds on the

  350. Lord, as we submit ourselves to his word

  351. and study it on our own and with each

  352. other, God's spirit makes known to us

  353. and confirms to us that we are his

  354. children and he inspires our prayers to

  355. God. Aba, father, it is an assurance of

  356. our relationship with the Lord as his

  357. beloved children. And it's not something

  358. that we will let go of because we'll

  359. know who we are in Christ. But if we

  360. don't submit ourselves to his spirit,

  361. studying his word alone and with each

  362. other, we won't come to that assurance

  363. of who we are. And we'll be blown to and

  364. fro by whatever tribulations, whatever

  365. pressure comes against us in this world.

  366. when we were at the Lamb School in

  367. Florida, Campo, which is this urban

  368. setting. They have this pretty cool

  369. building with a it's a soccer court, but

  370. it's like a basketball court. And it's

  371. open air with a fence around it up like

  372. on the third floor. And that's where 305

  373. students gathered for their devotional.

  374. And as we were sitting there

  375. participating with them and we felt the

  376. cool breeze come in that open air place

  377. and I saw the leaves of the palm trees

  378. blowing in the wind. You know it came to

  379. my mind that we can't see the wind just

  380. like Jesus says in John chapter 3. But

    John 3 chapter mention

  381. even then and there I could feel it. I

  382. could see its effects. And God says you

  383. don't see me but look around at these

  384. students. Look at the adults who care

  385. for them.

  386. You see my impact. You see the effect of

  387. my spirit among these children. And we

  388. certainly did. We saw it in the light of

  389. their eyes and the joy of their heart

  390. and their laughter. We saw it in the

  391. care of the adults who cared for them

  392. like spiritual mothers and fathers. And

  393. we experienced it in their welcome of

  394. us, their hospitality of us. These

  395. children who reached out to us in love

  396. and blessings. It was the effect of

  397. God's spirit to such an extent that we

  398. know it that no one can tell us that God

  399. isn't moving among his people because he

  400. is. He's transforming lives.

  401. The third thing that can happen to the

  402. seed of God's word, Jesus says in verse

  403. 22, "As for that which was sown among

  404. thorns, this is the one who hears the

  405. word, but the cares of the world, and

  406. the deceitfulness of riches choke the

  407. word, and it proves unfruitful."

  408. This is something that happens among

  409. those who receive the word, those who

  410. believe, but they don't practice the

  411. disciplines that are required to nurture

  412. that word so that it grows and produces

  413. fruit. And this can happen to any of us.

  414. When we were there working in the

  415. garden, one of the things that we did

  416. was take the hoe and clear out a bunch

  417. of weeds and bristles and things like

  418. that from some of the areas around the

  419. some yuca plants and cilantro plants.

  420. And I'll be honest with you, that's not

  421. something I normally do. And it is hard.

  422. I've got a blister here. my back sore

  423. from being out there working because it

  424. takes work to keep those thorns and

  425. thistles away from the plants that

  426. produce fruit. And we can sometimes be

  427. deceived into thinking, well,

  428. everything's by grace. I believe, so I

  429. am good. And then we become slack or we

  430. neglect spiritual disciplines of reading

  431. the word, of allowing God to rebuke us

  432. and convict us and challenge us through

  433. his word, his spirit, and other people.

  434. And those thorns will grow up and before

  435. we know it, we are producing no fruit in

  436. our lives. And that word becomes

  437. oppressed by that which is around it.

  438. One of the other things that I did was

  439. lifted a bucket of cement from one of

  440. the Hondurans to another guy up on the

  441. scaffolding. And you know, I'm thinking,

  442. okay, this is good exercise. And you

  443. know, if you ever go to Lamb with us,

  444. you don't have to worry about not being

  445. able to exercise because you will do

  446. exercise. So I'm lifting this thing and

  447. I think, man, this is I can do this. And

  448. meanwhile, one of the Hondurans is

  449. mixing the cement on the ground. So he's

  450. constantly pouring water in it, taking a

  451. shovel and mixing it, then putting in a

  452. bucket. Then the guy is building a a a

  453. bathroom. And so the guy mixing the

  454. cement has to go and confer with the guy

  455. making the walls. And he gives me the

  456. shovel. And I'm like, "Yeah, I can I can

  457. do this." You know, I lift weights. I

  458. work out. He'd been doing it for hours.

  459. I did it for like 2 minutes before I was

  460. like, "Oh my gosh, I can't keep doing

  461. this." You know, you got to pour the

  462. water and then you mix it so that it

  463. stays soft and doesn't harden. And it is

  464. hard work. And the same is true for our

  465. hearts. It's not easy in this world to

  466. keep our hearts soft and nurtured and

  467. not hardened. Takes hard work. By the

  468. grace of God, he strengthens us so that

  469. we can do it. He places us in the body

  470. of Christ so we can do it together. But

  471. it doesn't happen on its own. In fact,

  472. this is the nature of all three of these

  473. negative outcomes of the seed is they

  474. all happen because the person who

  475. receives a seed is passive. The devil

  476. comes and steals it. The wind of

  477. tribulation and persecution blows it

  478. away or the sun scorches it or the

  479. thorns grow up while it's just waiting

  480. and choke it. We have to be active and

  481. disciplined in our work. Paul writes in

  482. Romans 8:12, he says, "So then, brothers

    Romans 8:12

  483. and sisters, we are debtors, not to the

  484. flesh, to live according to the flesh.

  485. For if you live according to the flesh,

  486. you will die. But if by the spirit you

  487. put to death the misdeeds of the body,

  488. you will live." For all who are led by

  489. the spirit are sons of God. We have to

  490. make the decision, the commitment to be

  491. led by the Holy Spirit into those things

  492. that bring life and also to cut off and

  493. cut out of our lives those things that

  494. bring death, that bring destruction,

  495. that just bring apathy, that oppress the

  496. word of God and his spirit in our lives.

  497. And we have to make the commitment not

  498. to be distracted by the cares of the

  499. world to see things according to the

  500. kingdom of heaven in which we bel live

  501. and to which we belong rather than

  502. according to this world.

  503. And finally, the seed that falls in the

  504. good soil or the good heart is the one

  505. who hears the word and understands it.

  506. He indeed bears fruit and yields in one

  507. case 100, another 60, and another

  508. 30fold. It is the fruitful heart that

  509. has been developed and nurtured. And

  510. this was certainly something that was

  511. encouraging when we showed up at Lamb

  512. where we had worked last year. And one

  513. of the areas was just this rocky ground,

  514. this area of ground near the chicken

  515. coupe where part of our team spent a day

  516. last year clearing out rocks, tilling

  517. the soil. And today there are plantain

  518. and banana types of plants that are over

  519. six feet tall there.

  520. It's taken a lot of work from then and

  521. between then and now by other teams. It

  522. took nurture and work, but it has

  523. produced fruit. And that was one of the

  524. first things I heard when we got to the

  525. top of the mountain where the larger

  526. garden is is those who had worked that

  527. ground last year said, "Look, that's the

  528. area where we cleared last year and look

  529. at the plants that have grown, the corn,

  530. and the other things." It was a

  531. wonderful confirmation that as we apply

  532. ourselves to God's word and do the work

  533. he's called us to do, he will make the

  534. fruit grow

  535. happens in the midst of us all.

  536. One of the the other neat experiences we

  537. had was they had just planted a bunch of

  538. corn and the corn stocks were just like

  539. a foot or two tall and we went around

  540. putting fertilizer on each of the

  541. stocks. We were in pairs of two or

  542. three. I had a little boy named Marcus

  543. where I dig a little hole. He'd pull

  544. pour the fertilizer in. Peter and

  545. Sebastian did it. Caris and Caitlyn did

  546. it with a young man named Darwin and

  547. Masiel who is with us with the Honduran

  548. who works there, Ariel. And to me, it it

  549. was such an example of how we grow and

  550. nurture our hearts together. One of us

  551. digging a little, one of us putting

  552. fertilizer in, someone else will come

  553. along and water, others will come along

  554. and weed, and those corn stalks will

  555. grow. And we can be assured that the

  556. same will happen in our heart

  557. as we practice the presence of God and

  558. practice also the presence of people.

  559. Attuning ourselves to God, what he's

  560. saying, what he's doing both in our

  561. lives and together, but also attune

  562. ourselves to those around us. not just

  563. passing by but really being in the

  564. presence of each other that we might be

  565. known and that we might know each other

  566. and confirm and encourage one another.

  567. The early saint Aronyaeus who was in the

  568. second century a bishop he wrote a book

  569. called against heresies as a response to

  570. some of the gnostic teachings that

  571. devalued human life and the things of

  572. the world. And it's in that book that we

  573. get the famous phrase the glory of God

  574. is a human fully alive. When our hearts

  575. are nurtured and we continue to nurture

  576. them individually and together, we

  577. become people who are fully alive for

  578. the glory of God, for the sake of Christ

  579. and his work among us and in those

  580. around us. And there's this wonderful

  581. promise in Romans 8:1. If the spirit of

    Romans 8:1

  582. him who raised Jesus from the dead

  583. dwells in you, he who raised Christ from

  584. the dead will also give life to your

  585. mortal bodies through the spirit who

  586. dwells in you.

  587. life. Life as God has it. Life as Jesus

  588. demonstrated it, given to you now and

  589. for eternity.

  590. So I want to leave you with what I think

  591. is the one message if you were to sum up

  592. the message of scripture into one word

  593. and it is prevalent in the passage from

  594. Isaiah chapter 55.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  595. When you listen, you'll hear it. Come

  596. everyone who thirsts. Come to the

  597. waters. And he who has no money, come

  598. buy and eat. Come buy wine and milk

  599. without money and without price. Why do

  600. you spend your money for that which is

  601. not bread and your labor for that which

  602. does not satisfy? Listen diligently to

  603. me and eat what is good and delight

  604. yourself in rich food. Incline your ear

  605. and come to me here that your soul may

  606. live.

  607. Don't waste your time with the things of

  608. this world, but come

  609. come to the Lord. Hear his word and come

  610. that your soul may live today and

  611. forever.

  612. So let us close

  613. in prayer coming to the Lord and

  614. inviting him to come into our hearts.

  615. And if you have not ever come to the

  616. Lord with your whole heart, if you have

  617. not invited the Lord to come into your

  618. whole heart, now is a time to say to the

  619. Lord, I come. And to invite the Lord,

  620. come to me. So let's pray.

  621. If you've never done that before, I

  622. invite you to just say a prayer like

  623. this. Jesus, I come to you.

  624. I believe that you are Lord and Savior.

  625. Jesus, come to me today.

  626. Show me your compassion.

  627. Pardon and forgive my sins

  628. and fill me with your Holy Spirit

  629. and give me eternal life.

  630. Come, Holy Spirit, to all of us. Fill us

  631. with your presence. bring us before your

  632. throne as your people and help us to

  633. live the life you have for us bearing

  634. fruit. God, we ask for a hundfold

  635. harvest

  636. for us as individuals and for us as a

  637. people of God. All for your glory and

  638. the sake of all of those for whom Christ

  639. died. Amen.
