  1. Let us pray.

  2. Lord Jesus Christ, I pray that you would

  3. open our eyes to see you. Open our

  4. hearts to love you. Open our ears to

  5. hear you. Use this time, Lord,

  6. to transform us.

  7. implant within us your hidden truth that

  8. we may declare it publicly and openly

  9. that you may be glorified. We ask this

  10. in your name. Amen.

  11. >> Amen. You may be seated.

  12. As Father Craig mentioned at the

  13. beginning of worship this morning, my

  14. name is uh Father David Alinskis. My

  15. wife Mary Beth. Mary Beth, can you raise

  16. your hand? She's right there. Um our

  17. kids have departed with yours. Um so I

  18. can't introduce them now. But we are

  19. missionaries with the Society of

  20. Anglican Missionaries and Senders. We

  21. are sent out from North America to uh be

  22. the the voice not just of Anglicans in

  23. North America around the world but uh to

  24. serve Jesus Christ as his emissaries and

  25. that is made possible because we are

  26. sent out we are sent out by the church

  27. sent out by people like you and we are

  28. transitioning to a new ministry. uh we

  29. had been serving in pastoral ministry in

  30. Bise and it was there that we first uh

  31. developed a wonderful relationship with

  32. Christurch Anglican. I had known Clark

  33. and Carol Smith before then but it was

  34. in 2014 that uh Christurch sent a

  35. mission team to Bise and we so benefited

  36. from that relationship uh between your

  37. church and ours at St. Andrews and San

  38. Ignasio uh from for many years and we

  39. were so grateful for that partnership

  40. and for that relationship. But the Lord

  41. is calling us to a new ministry, a new

  42. ministry of theological education, of

  43. preparing ministers not just in BISE and

  44. not just in the Netherlands where the

  45. seminary is located, but preparing

  46. ministers for the world. Most of the

  47. students that we will be teaching and

  48. serving in the Netherlands come from

  49. Africa. They come from Asia, from Latin

  50. America and they go to the Netherlands

  51. and receive a full fully free education

  52. uh in a master's level by studying

  53. there. Every faculty person is a

  54. missionary to make this possible and

  55. that is in a nutshell what our ministry

  56. is all about. Now I may touch on aspects

  57. of what that ministry will entail or at

  58. least what I hope for my students there

  59. in the Netherlands. But before I say

  60. that, let me just say that I would

  61. encourage before you leave here today.

  62. Get one of these little cards. Some of

  63. you get these coming in or see them. If

  64. not, grab one on the way out. There's a

  65. little stack by the door. It has our

  66. picture. And that's the main thing

  67. because I would like you to pray for us.

  68. And this is a perfect size for your

  69. refrigerator. Okay? Your refrigerator

  70. needs a picture of our family so that

  71. you can remember to pray for us

  72. long after we are gone. When our

  73. children are old and gray themselves, I

  74. hope that this picture or one like it is

  75. still on your refrigerator.

  76. I would also encourage you to as you

  77. pray for us, figure out what we need,

  78. what what you can be praying for us for.

  79. And while you can visit our website, I

  80. encourage you to pick up one of these on

  81. your way out as well. There's a little

  82. QR code here similar to the one in your

  83. bulletin, but that will help you to see

  84. our missionary profile on the SAM's

  85. website, the Society of Anglican

  86. Missionaries and Senders. And if you

  87. feel very adventurous, I invite you to

  88. put your name and your email address

  89. here and give it to us so that we can

  90. put you on our email update list, okay?

  91. Because we would like to send you our

  92. prayer request, let you know how things

  93. are going so that you can pray better

  94. for us. We are excited about this new

  95. ministry. We are excited to be training

  96. and equipping people from all around the

  97. world to be the voice to be the

  98. spokespeople to be the hands and the

  99. feet of Jesus Christ all around the

  100. world. Beloved, there are places in this

  101. world where it is hard for someone who

  102. has skin like mine and a passport like

  103. mine and a background like mine to go.

  104. But where someone from Ethiopia,

  105. someone from India, someone from Bise or

  106. Argentina could conceivably go because

  107. they look and sound different than I do

  108. because they have a passport that is

  109. different from mine and they are able to

  110. go to parts of the world and minister in

  111. ways that I am not able to do.

  112. But I can contribute to what the Lord is

  113. doing around this world by providing a

  114. more robust training in the word of God

  115. and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

  116. Helping them to understand in deeper

  117. ways how to search the scriptures, how

  118. to find Jesus Christ there, how to

  119. discern what his mission is for us in

  120. this world. And it involves things like

  121. church history. It involves courses in

  122. biblical Greek and Hebrew. It involves

  123. courses in systematic theology which is

  124. just a fancy way of saying topics in God

  125. in what God wants us to know.

  126. But through this education, my hope is

  127. that my students have a more profound

  128. engagement with the word of God and

  129. through the word of God with Jesus

  130. Christ himself.

  131. So that whether they are returning to

  132. Cameroon or Ghana, whether they are

  133. returning to the eastern block countries

  134. in Europe or whether they are local

  135. Dutch people who living in a society and

  136. a culture where only 5% of people are

  137. practicing evangelical Christians,

  138. they are able to take what they have

  139. learned

  140. and bring it to others.

  141. Our job as missionaries is to make new

  142. missionaries.

  143. But this takes patience. It takes time

  144. for these seeds that are planted to

  145. grow. It takes time to see

  146. the impact of what we as educators, as

  147. missionaries are doing in this world.

  148. Because the word of God

  149. is his word,

  150. but it is also one that rewards us

  151. getting further and further into. I

  152. didn't say that very well. Let me see if

  153. I can say that a little more clearly.

  154. The word of God invites us to come in

  155. and to get to know him better. The word

  156. of God invites us to come in and to

  157. study it and to find things that we

  158. never saw there before, to understand it

  159. at a level that is going to not only

  160. make us go, "Huh, that's interesting. I

  161. never thought about that." But that is

  162. going to challenge us to take God's word

  163. and to apply it to our lives in new and

  164. more powerful ways.

  165. There are more superficial readings

  166. where we read the text along the surface

  167. and they are true and they are good, but

  168. they are not all that God wants us to

  169. take away from scripture.

  170. That I think is one of the great

  171. benefits of a seminary education like I

  172. hope to provide my students with in the

  173. Netherlands. Today in the message I

  174. would like to take just a few minutes to

  175. look at our gospel reading today and to

  176. look at some of the layers of meanings.

  177. what I might say to move from a casual

  178. reading of Matthew chapter 13, but to

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  179. get a little bit deeper and to get a

  180. little bit deeper to take you on a

  181. journey that I would hope that my

  182. students one day will be taking with

  183. this and similar passages in scripture

  184. as well.

  185. If you don't mind, I'd like to begin in

  186. Matthew chapter 13. Some of you may have

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  187. brought your Bibles. If you didn't,

  188. that's okay. But I want us to look at

  189. some of the verses starting in 31. As

  190. you turn there, I'm going to I'm going

  191. to mention

  192. some important things that I would want

  193. my students even at a basic level to

  194. notice about this passage. First of all,

  195. that it is in the Gospel according to

  196. St. Matthew. Now, you're going to say,

  197. "Of course, Father David, it's in the

  198. Gospel according to St. Matthew." We

  199. said that at the beginning when we read

  200. it, okay, but there are some things that

  201. you need to know about the Gospel

  202. according to St. Matthew. And one of

  203. them is that there are some long

  204. discourses, long speeches, teachings of

  205. Jesus. five of them. Just like there are

  206. five books of Moses, there are five

  207. teachings of Jesus in the Gospel

  208. according to St. Matthew. And we're in

  209. the middle of one of those long sections

  210. of teaching. Another thing that I'd

  211. point out to my students is that Jesus's

  212. teaching here is in parables.

  213. And here we have seven parables.

  214. And they all begin with the kingdom of

  215. heaven is like, and he goes on. And

  216. these parables are analogies. They're

  217. word pictures that help us understand

  218. what the kingdom of heaven is like. Now,

  219. two weeks ago, we read the first one.

  220. You may remember the first one had to do

  221. with a sewer who went out to sew. And as

  222. he swed, the seed fell on different

  223. kinds of soils and it had different

  224. results and only one of them ended up

  225. bearing fruit. One of the great things

  226. that Jesus does in that parable is that

  227. he explains it to his disciples because

  228. they go to Jesus and they say, "We don't

  229. get it."

  230. So Jesus tells them what the parable

  231. means.

  232. Last week we read another parable about

  233. wheat and tears, about the good crops

  234. and the weeds that were sewn up among

  235. them and how you have to take care until

  236. the harvest time not to harvest

  237. prematurely and not to weed prematurely.

  238. And fortunately again Jesus tells us the

  239. meaning of this parable.

  240. Today we read the other five and Jesus

  241. does not tell us what they mean.

  242. So this is an encouragement on a

  243. superficial level to go to these and

  244. say, "Well, Jesus didn't tell me what

  245. they meant. I'm assuming that this

  246. should be pretty easy to figure out."

  247. And so they are on one level. Reading

  248. these these parables, I think most of us

  249. have a meaning come to us pretty

  250. quickly. We read about a mustard seed,

  251. the smallest of all the seeds, and it

  252. does what? It grows up into a massive

  253. bush or tree. And Jesus says, "The

  254. kingdom of heaven is like this. It

  255. starts out small and then it gets

  256. it gets bigger. Then we move on." We

  257. read about

  258. a bit of yeast, leaven that is worked

  259. into the bread and it goes into the

  260. whole thing and it rises up and Jesus

  261. says, you see, even a little bit of

  262. leaven will leaven this whole lump of

  263. dough just like the kingdom of heaven.

  264. It starts out small but it starts

  265. spreading. Gets bigger, it starts

  266. spreading.

  267. So far so good, right? We hear about a

  268. treasure hidden in a field.

  269. A man finds it

  270. and then he decides how am I going to

  271. get this treasure? What does he do? He

  272. doesn't steal it. He buries it again. He

  273. goes and he buys the field and now he is

  274. a rich man because he bought the field

  275. with the treasure.

  276. Same thing with the pearl of great

  277. price. A pearl vendor finds a pearl that

  278. has been significantly discounted and

  279. even though it is still expensive, even

  280. though he has to sell everything that he

  281. has to buy that one pearl, he knows that

  282. it's worth it. And in the same way, we

  283. can walk away from these parables and

  284. say that like that treasure and like the

  285. pearl, the kingdom of heaven itself is

  286. valuable enough. It's important enough

  287. that I should be willing to give

  288. everything that I have and everything

  289. that I am to lay hold of that treasure

  290. because it is a pearl of great price.

  291. And then we have a parable about the end

  292. times that the good will be sorted from

  293. the bad, the good fish from the rotten

  294. when that net is dragged in and when the

  295. angels come and sort us all out. And

  296. this is a little bit harder for some of

  297. us to place. But on a very literal

  298. reading, I think we would say, well,

  299. Jesus is talking about how the kingdom

  300. of heaven is going to be like that and

  301. that there's going to be a harvest one

  302. day and that we will all end up being

  303. counted.

  304. And then we go

  305. with our hands and we move on to chapter

  306. 14.

  307. I don't think any of those readings of

  308. the parable are wrong. Those are all

  309. true. Mustard seeds do grow.

  310. Bread does rise. Treasures and pearls

  311. are worth sacrificing for. And there

  312. will be a day of judgment one day.

  313. But what is missing from this reading

  314. and where I would encourage my students

  315. to press into what Jesus is saying here

  316. a little bit more is to ask the

  317. question, but where do we find Jesus in

  318. all of this?

  319. Because there's another level of reading

  320. where we say, well, the kingdom of

  321. heaven is like these things, but the

  322. kingdom of heaven is about the king as

  323. well, isn't it?

  324. We have a good news about Jesus that is

  325. not just about what we are willing to

  326. give up for the kingdom. It is about

  327. what the king has been willing to give

  328. up for his people.

  329. One could flip

  330. the parable of the treasure in the field

  331. for instance on its head or the pearl of

  332. great price on its head and instead of

  333. beginning with what are you willing to

  334. give up for the kingdom? Where what

  335. country in the world are you willing to

  336. go as a missionary for example

  337. in order to bring about that kingdom?

  338. What if we began with Jesus? What if we

  339. began with that God who did not spare

  340. his only son but gave himself up for us

  341. all?

  342. Gave him up for us all.

  343. What if we began with the God who was

  344. willing to do everything to be with you

  345. and with me? Because when we talk about

  346. the kingdom of heaven, we are not

  347. talking about something of which we are

  348. not ourselves called to belong. We have

  349. been called into his kingdom. We have

  350. been called into his glorious light. We

  351. have been made priests, royal priests as

  352. a part of this kingdom. And we with him

  353. have been graced with something that we

  354. did not earn or deserve or bring about

  355. for ourselves. And if we think about the

  356. kingdom as the reason why Jesus has come

  357. into the world, we can look at these

  358. parables and say Jesus

  359. yes is the goal.

  360. He is the omega but he is also the

  361. alpha. He is the beginning. He is the

  362. pioneer and not just the perfector of

  363. our faith. And it is he who comes

  364. looking for that pearl of great price.

  365. It is he who comes looking for that

  366. treasure hidden in a field. It is he who

  367. comes looking for us.

  368. He comes into this world and becomes a

  369. human being. takes on our flesh, lives

  370. our life, brings his healing into our

  371. world, and then he brings it all to the

  372. cross and gives his life for us. Because

  373. through the shedding of his blood, and

  374. by his resurrection from the dead, he

  375. has brought about a new reality. He has

  376. brought about the kingdom of heaven that

  377. has been at hand from the beginning that

  378. Matthew begins his gospel. And I would

  379. push my students at Tindell Seminary.

  380. And I would push you here, sisters and

  381. brothers, to consider how is Jesus

  382. Christ in these parables.

  383. He is the pearl of great price. But for

  384. him, you were that pearl of great price.

  385. He is the mustard seed who though small

  386. and though easy to overlook through most

  387. of his life and although he was despised

  388. and afflicted and rejected, he though

  389. being small was swn into this earth. He

  390. his body into that grave and what

  391. happened? It has sprouted

  392. and his church is extending all around

  393. the world. His

  394. his kingdom by the power of the Holy

  395. Spirit is going forth. It cannot be

  396. stopped. The gates of hell cannot stand

  397. against it. And all of the nations of

  398. the earth, all of those birds of heaven

  399. are finding a nest in its branches

  400. because Jesus Christ's mission continues

  401. to this day.

  402. He is that leaven that is spreading

  403. himself through the whole dough.

  404. I encourage my students like I would

  405. encourage all of you to ask the question

  406. where do I see Jesus in these texts of

  407. scripture because as the one who is

  408. telling these parables he is not telling

  409. them general principles for living. He

  410. is revealing something about himself.

  411. I hope my students come to scripture and

  412. see Jesus there.

  413. But even there, I would push them a

  414. little bit further.

  415. I would push them further because I

  416. would like them to see what holds these

  417. parables together, what ties them in

  418. unity. There are seven parables being

  419. told here. And one would expect that

  420. with such a nice little round number,

  421. you read the Bible, there are a ton of

  422. sevens there, right?

  423. That they would be linked together. And

  424. Jesus actually gives us the link. It is

  425. a link that is missing from our

  426. lectionary readings over the last three

  427. weeks. But let me read it to you because

  428. this is a little bit counterintuitive.

  429. The disciples came to Jesus and said,

  430. "Why do you speak to them in parables?"

  431. And Jesus answered them,

  432. "To you it has been given to know the

  433. secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to

  434. them it has not been given. For to the

  435. one who has more will be given, and he w

  436. who has, sorry, he who has more will be

  437. given, and he will have an abundance.

  438. But from the one who has not, even what

  439. he has will be taken away."

  440. This is why I speak to them in parables

  441. because seeing they do not see and

  442. hearing they do not hear nor do they

  443. understand. Indeed, in their case, the

  444. prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that

  445. says, "You will indeed hear but never

  446. understand. You will indeed see but

  447. never perceive. For this people's heart

  448. has grown dull, and with their ears they

  449. can barely hear, and their eyes they

  450. have closed. lest they should see with

  451. their eyes and hear with their ears and

  452. understand with their heart and turn and

  453. I would heal them.

  454. One of the strangest things about

  455. parables is that we read them as though

  456. Jesus told us these parables, these

  457. agrarian metaphors of seeds and sewers

  458. and fields and farms and fish and nets,

  459. pearls and treasures.

  460. Jesus told us these things

  461. to make them plain to simple people.

  462. But Jesus tells his disciples that Jesus

  463. teaches in parables so that people will

  464. not understand.

  465. Although you'd say but why does he do it

  466. at all then?

  467. I think rather what Jesus is saying is

  468. that there is a secret in a parable.

  469. There is something hidden there. Parable

  470. doesn't just bring something to the

  471. surface. It is there to draw us into

  472. the parable itself, to draw us into his

  473. words, to draw us into scripture. There

  474. is something there that beckons us in

  475. because it has been hidden there.

  476. And if we are unwilling to jump down the

  477. rabbit hole, as it were, with Alice into

  478. the weird world of scripture, we are

  479. going to miss out

  480. on what Jesus has to say.

  481. And as we keep that idea of hiddenness,

  482. of secrecy, as he will later say that

  483. all these things Jesus said to the

  484. crowds in parables, he said nothing

  485. without a parable because he was going

  486. to fulfill what was spoken through

  487. through the prophets. I will open my

  488. mouth in parables. I will utter what has

  489. been hidden since the foundation of the

  490. world. Jesus has taken hidden things and

  491. put them in the parables and he is

  492. saying, do you want to follow me? Do you

  493. want to find me? Do you want to walk

  494. with me? Then you need to spend time.

  495. You need to dive into these parables

  496. because in the parables themselves you

  497. will find a treasure.

  498. Jesus understands the kingdom. He

  499. understands its hiddenness.

  500. And like a parable, the kingdom of

  501. heaven itself, it lies hidden in this

  502. world. It lies hidden in our hearts. It

  503. lies hidden in the word of God. It lies

  504. hidden in the life of Jesus as people

  505. worked alongside of him, walked

  506. alongside of him, listened to him, and

  507. still left confused as to what was

  508. happening.

  509. Because the hiddenness of the kingdom is

  510. a way of drawing people in and saying

  511. you need to seek it and you need once

  512. you find it, you need to take it and you

  513. need to hide it. Again,

  514. not in the sense of keeping it away from

  515. people, but of investing it in something

  516. that is going to bear fruit.

  517. The funny thing is that when the man

  518. finds the treasure in the field, what

  519. does he do? He hides it again.

  520. What does the man do when he takes that

  521. mustard seed? He hides it in the dirt.

  522. What does the woman do when she find

  523. when she has her leaven? She hides it in

  524. the lump.

  525. In these lowly parables, in these easy,

  526. not easy, these these simpler ways of

  527. explaining the kingdom, there is a great

  528. profoundity hidden. In the same way that

  529. as we follow Jesus into ministry, we

  530. invest our time, our lives, our

  531. treasures, our talents, as we often say,

  532. we invest ourselves in the lives of

  533. other people and it doesn't seem like it

  534. is bearing much fruit. There is a secret

  535. in that when we pursue the loneliness of

  536. giving up ourselves, of following Jesus,

  537. in giving up our lives to the people

  538. around us, by bearing witness to Jesus

  539. Christ, by sharing the gospel, by

  540. changing the direction of our vocation

  541. and our life, we are entering into the

  542. secret of Jesus.

  543. It is not obvious how this is all going

  544. to play out. One day, yes, a net will be

  545. gathered up. And like that, kingdom one

  546. day will bring to light what was down

  547. below there in the depths of the sea,

  548. the good fish and the bad fish, but was

  549. hidden. There is something hidden in

  550. God's word that is beckoning us and

  551. calling us to enter into these parables

  552. are a parable about parables.

  553. These parables in being a parable of the

  554. kingdom are teaching us about God's word

  555. and how God's word itself is bringing

  556. about the kingdom. Not by putting it all

  557. out there in the open, but by drawing

  558. people into the pages of scripture

  559. itself and finding Jesus there and then

  560. taking that scripture and by embodying

  561. it in ourselves, hiding it in our

  562. hearts, we pour ourselves in secret,

  563. unseen ways that often are not credited.

  564. They gain no glory or attention, but

  565. little by little, year by year, begin

  566. having an impact.

  567. like yeast in bread, like a mustard seed

  568. that gradually grows.

  569. We understand that yes, we need to have

  570. that treasure, but not for ourselves

  571. right away. We need to take it and put

  572. it back into that field to sew it into

  573. the field again. So that having given up

  574. everything, we can see the realization

  575. of that treasure, that kingdom, that

  576. place where Jesus says your treas where

  577. your treasure is, there will your heart

  578. be also. And having desired the kingdom,

  579. we can see it grow into fullness

  580. because we have reinvested it secretly

  581. into the lives of those around us.

  582. I want to keep going,

  583. but my time is coming to an end. So, let

  584. me say this.

  585. I want to encourage my students. I want

  586. to see my students dive head first into

  587. this word into these pages

  588. so that when they are standing before

  589. people they can say thus says the Lord

  590. with a good conscience so that they can

  591. find in God's word the resources that

  592. they will need for years and decades of

  593. ministry for pouring themselves into the

  594. lives of people around them in hidden

  595. and secret kind of ways that aren't

  596. obvious to everyone but we believe and

  597. trust that that kingdom is at work in

  598. their words because Jesus is present in

  599. I encourage you to take the same

  600. attitude,

  601. take the same heart, to devote yourself

  602. to the study of scripture, to hear those

  603. words of Jesus, and to delight in the

  604. kingdom where you find it, where you see

  605. it here and now. Pray that you would be

  606. given eyes to see, ears to hear, hearts

  607. to perceive and understand where Jesus

  608. is speaking in these texts of scripture.

  609. and having found him to give him the

  610. glory. Amen.
