Think the Bible is irrelevant? Think again on this week's

episode of Liberty at Home. Hello and welcome to our latest

episode of Liberty at Home, produced by Liberty Baptist

W Hope that helps you. Believe it or not, we've made it

to the end of the book of Proverbs, which means we're in

Proverbs chapter 31 today. And today we'll be reading 4

Proverbs 31 · chapter mention

verses of Scripture that represent the two main themes of

this chapter. So we'll read Proverbs 31 verses

4:00 and 5:00 and then verses 10 and 11.

Verses four and five say it is not for kings, O Lemule, It is

not for kings to drink wine or for prince's strong drink, lest

they drink and forget the law and pervert the judgment of any

of the afflicted. I have to chuckle to myself when

I hear someone say something like this.

The Bible really isn't relevant anymore.

You know, I'm not really sure where this line of thinking

comes from. Do they believe that the Bible

is irrelevant because it's old? Well, the reputations of great

works of literature are only enhanced by their age, not

diminished, so it can't be an issue of age.

Is it irrelevant because nobody wants to read it?

Well, that can't be the case either, as the Bible is the most

read book in history, be the next most popular book by around

6 billion copies or so, with no other book even cracking a

billion published. And by the way, the Bible

remains popular today, still flying off the shelves at

greater volumes than any other book, with The New Yorker

magazine once saying that the Bible is quote the best selling

book of the year every year. So the Bible isn't irrelevant

due to disinterest. So is it irrelevant because it

doesn't speak to the issues of the day?

Well, today's text is proof positive.

That's not the case. In just the few short verses

that we read in Proverbs 31, we observed 2 very current issues

that are discussed, the dangers of alcohol and God's view on a

biblical family. Are these issues relevant for

today? Absolutely.

There's relevant as today's newspaper and in fact I'd argue

that they're more relevant than today's newspaper since most of

today's newspapers carry news from yesterday that we already

know, which is why the print media is going the way of the

dodo bird. Yes, Solomon begs biblical truth

to these hot button issues of our day.

Alcohol is dangerous. God's plan for a biblical family

has been and still is a husband and a wife, each serving in

their God-given roles with their God-given abilities.

So we can conclude that the Bible is not irrelevant due to

it ignoring the issues of the day either because it tackles

them headlong. Yes, the passage we read may be

3000 years old, but it gives us timeless truth.

So getting back to our original question, why do people think

that the Bible is irrelevant? Really, it comes down to this

issue and this issue alone. People just don't like what it

has to say. Let's be honest, what we just

talked about in reference, the issues of alcohol and the

family, they fly against the prevailing and popular wisdom of

this day. So because of this, it's very

tempting for people to wave their hand and dismiss the Word

of God as irrelevant instead of allowing the Word of God to

penetrate their heart and change their worldview.

The Bible is relevant. Need help with depression?

The Bible is relevant. Longing for peace?

The Bible is relevant. Struggling with habitual sin?

Yes, the Bible is relevant. Need encouragement in the midst

of personal trials? The Bible is relevant.

Have questions about eternity and life after death?

Yes, the Bible is relevant. Over and over again, the Bible

proves itself relevant, and those who doubt its relevance

are only showing either their ignorance of the issue or their

unwillingness to fall in line with the teachings of this

blessed book. So the next time you're tempted

to think that the Bible is irrelevant, instead of putting

it off to the side, pick it up and let this old book bring a

new look and fresh perspective into your life through its

timeless truths. Can you believe it?
