  1. verse 15. We'll read through these three verses,

  2. then we'll pray and get started. Esther sent

  3. this reply to Mordecai, go and assemble all the

  4. Jews who can be found in Susa and fast for me.

  5. Don't eat or drink for three days, day or night.

  6. I and my female servants will also fast in the

  7. same way. After that, I will go to the king.

  8. even if it is against the law. If I perish, I

  9. perish. So Mordecai went and did everything Esther

  10. had ordered him. Let's pray. God, we thank you

  11. for your word. It is good, dear Lord. You are

  12. good to us. You give us the freedom to come here

  13. today and to study your word, and I pray. that

  14. your Holy Spirit would help us to grow in what

  15. we see, that we can grow in this story, and that,

  16. dear Lord, that there would be something in this

  17. word that we need to hear tonight. I pray, God,

  18. that you would help us to be free of the worries

  19. and the stresses and the aggravations of this

  20. world, and that in these few minutes, dear Lord,

  21. your Holy Spirit would just speak through me

  22. and to each one of us in this church. In Jesus'

  23. name I pray it. Amen. Now we saw in our sermon

  24. Sunday where Esther was called upon by Mordecai

  25. to speak up for the Jewish people. The evil man

  26. Haman, who the king had kind of put in charge

  27. over everything, come up with this plan to kill

  28. all the Jews. And Mordecai had sent the word

  29. to Esther that she needed to speak up. And Esther

  30. responded, look, I cannot go before the king.

  31. No one is allowed to go in the king's presence

  32. if the king has not summoned for them to come.

  33. And she said, look, if I go into the king's presence,

  34. if he does not extend his scepter, then I will

  35. be killed. Then we see the famous response of

  36. Mordecai where he says, look, you've got to go

  37. because you have been placed here for such a

  38. time as this. And this is Esther's response that

  39. we see in these verses. Esther says, okay, I'll

  40. do it. But before I go, I need to be prepared

  41. to do it. This book never mentions God throughout

  42. the book of Esther. And even here, prayer is

  43. not mentioned. And you may say that I'm reading

  44. too much into this text, and maybe I am, but

  45. I don't think so. It is mentioned that they were

  46. too fast. Before Esther was going to do this

  47. thing that Mordecai had said you need to do this,

  48. knowing that her life was in jeopardy, she said,

  49. before I do it, I need you to get all the other

  50. Jewish people together so that you can fast about

  51. what's about to take place. And she said, I'm

  52. going to do it too with all the servants and

  53. people around me. We're all going to fast for

  54. three days, day and night. Now, it doesn't say

  55. that they're praying there, but I don't think

  56. it's going too far for us to assume that that's

  57. exactly what was taking place. We often see...

  58. probably more times than not in Scripture, when

  59. fasting is mentioned, that it involves praying,

  60. prayer, and fasting. These are Jewish people.

  61. These are people of God. When they fasted, almost

  62. certainly, I would guess, more times than not,

  63. they would pray, if not every time. And even

  64. though God is not mentioned here and prayer is

  65. not mentioned here, I believe that that's probably

  66. what was taking place. is that Esther was telling

  67. Mordecai and the Jewish people, y 'all need to

  68. pray and fast and y 'all need to seek the Lord

  69. because we're about to do this thing. I'm about

  70. to do this thing. I'm going to have to go before

  71. the king. It's a scary thing. My life is in jeopardy.

  72. So we need all the help we can get. And so we

  73. want to take this time to humble ourself before

  74. God before we continue through with this plan.

  75. Before I go and approach the king, I want to

  76. make sure, we need to make sure that we are prepared

  77. and that we are seeking God and that he is with

  78. us in this endeavor. And so Esther listened to

  79. what Mordecai said. He said, look, you've been

  80. placed here. Perhaps you're here for such a time

  81. as this. And she says, okay, I'll do it. She

  82. says, but the law is the law and the law states.

  83. That if I go before the king, I may die. But

  84. what does she say? She says, but if I perish,

  85. I perish. Now that's a beautiful example for

  86. us to follow. Because there may be things that

  87. God calls us to, areas for us to serve, that

  88. may be inconvenient, that may put us in harm's

  89. way, that may cost us our life. Now maybe that

  90. kind of teaching is... It's not heard enough.

  91. Maybe too much we say, oh, well, God only wants

  92. to put us in good situations, and it's only going

  93. to be good if we're serving the Lord. Maybe it

  94. is, and God's going to be with us, and maybe

  95. in that we experience God's grace and feel his

  96. presence in another way, but it's not necessarily

  97. always going to be good because sometimes doing

  98. the Lord's work is not easy. It is dangerous.

  99. We put ourselves in harm's way. There are brothers

  100. and sisters in Christ around the world today

  101. who are in prison because they've done right,

  102. not because they've done wrong, not because God

  103. was not with them, but because God was with them.

  104. them and they and they would seek God and they

  105. would feel that God said go and do this work

  106. and they said God I'll do it and they are in

  107. prison and they are praising God and they are

  108. still seeking God because they are where God

  109. wanted them to be doing the work that God wanted

  110. them to do and sometimes when God puts us where

  111. we are for our such a time as this moment it

  112. might not be easy, and it may very well be dangerous,

  113. but we need to say, God, I'm going to seek you,

  114. and I'm going to be prepared. That's the first

  115. thing we need to do. is we need to do what Esther

  116. said. She wasn't just flying in here willy -nilly.

  117. She wasn't going in blind. She didn't say, okay,

  118. if this is what you want me to do, I'm going

  119. to do it. She said, no, I want to make sure that

  120. I'm prepared. I want to make sure that the Lord

  121. is with me in this, and I know it doesn't say

  122. that in the text, and maybe I'm reading too much

  123. into it, but I believe that that's what was taking

  124. place, that they humbled themselves before the

  125. Lord, and she wanted to make sure that the Lord

  126. was going to be with her before she went. and

  127. approach the king. And that's what the decisions

  128. that we make need to follow that same example.

  129. That as we make decisions in our lives, as we

  130. make decisions at a church, that we need to take

  131. the time to pray and maybe even fast to say,

  132. God, we are humbling ourselves before you. We

  133. are seeking you. We need help with this decision.

  134. We need help to know what to do. So God, let

  135. me be bathed in prayer or bathe the situation

  136. in prayer so that I'll be ready for whatever

  137. is going to come next. And then we need to say,

  138. but God, I'm going to do what your will is. And

  139. if I perish, I... And so Mordecai and the other

  140. Jews, the queen and the ones who were around

  141. her, they prayed and they fasted for three days

  142. and for three nights. And then Queen Esther had

  143. to do what she was called to do by Mordecai.

  144. And that was approach the presence of the king.

  145. She had already told Mordecai, look, if I go

  146. and he does not extend that scepter, that I'm

  147. in big trouble. And so after all this had taken

  148. place, Esther got all prettied up, looking good,

  149. and she went near the entrance of where the king's

  150. throne was, and the king saw her standing there.

  151. And when he did, he extended his golden scepter

  152. and asked her what she would like. God heard

  153. those prayers. God was with her. God delivered

  154. her. And God gave her the king's ear. And so

  155. it is for us. There are things that we are called

  156. to that are scary, that look dangerous to us,

  157. and we're not sure how they're going to turn

  158. out. And maybe they turn out good or maybe they

  159. turn out bad. But I guess they really don't turn

  160. out bad. If it's the Lord's will and it's for

  161. the kingdom of God, it may be difficult, but

  162. it will be good in the end. And Esther was willing

  163. to stand up for the Lord and to stand up for

  164. the Lord's people. But before she did anything,

  165. she wanted to make sure that all the people were

  166. together fasting. And I believe praying as well

  167. that God would be with the situation. And he

  168. was. And so it needs to be for us. That we need

  169. to pray over all that we do. And our lives as

  170. a church, that we don't make any decisions on

  171. our own, but every decision we make is made by

  172. us coming to God and seeking his will and letting

  173. him lead us in what we need to do. Let's pray.

  174. God, we come to you. We thank you for this beautiful

  175. story. And there are so many things I believe

  176. that we can learn from this story. And I pray,

  177. God, that you would help us to be so bold as

  178. Esther was. that we'd be willing to go where

  179. you send us, even into the danger zones, even

  180. into the tough situations, dear Lord, that we

  181. would have the same resolve that Esther did,

  182. that we would say, if I perish, I perish. God,

  183. it would be better to perish doing your will

  184. than to live in disobedience to it. So God, I

  185. pray that you would help us to live by that truth

  186. tonight. I pray, God, that you would help us

  187. to seek you in every decision we make. Sometimes

  188. we get the cart ahead of the horse, dear Lord.

  189. We start making decisions and never ask you,

  190. not one time. Never pray for your guidance, never

  191. humble ourselves before you, never seek you.

  192. And I pray that you forgive me for that. And

  193. maybe there are others who struggle with that,

  194. that you would help us not to do that, dear Lord,

  195. that we would be those who would seek you. and

  196. that we would pray to you and that we would listen

  197. and that we would be able to clearly hear and

  198. discern the ways that you lead and guide and

  199. instruct us, dear Lord, that we would be ready

  200. for the task before us, that with boldness and

  201. bravery, dear Lord, that we would be like Esther

  202. and prepare ourselves and go to do whatever it

  203. is you've called us to. And I ask these things

  204. in Jesus' name. Amen.
