  1. It's short. I think this is the last of the section

  2. of the royal psalms that we have been seeing

  3. a lot of here in the last few psalms we've looked

  4. at. These are psalms that kind of have the same

  5. theme of praising God, acknowledging God's greatness

  6. and his power and his mercy. and just praising

  7. God and rejoicing in God for who he is. And we

  8. see that same type of language here tonight.

  9. Again, like the rest of these, we don't really

  10. know who wrote this psalm. We don't really know

  11. when it was written, but it doesn't matter. We

  12. still can see the importance of what these psalms

  13. are kind of repeating week after week as we look

  14. at them, and that is the continual praise of

  15. God. We'll pray, and then we'll get started.

  16. Dear Lord, we come to you. We thank you for just

  17. the privilege to be part of this body, to be

  18. able to come together to sing these songs and

  19. to worship you. I thank you for the love that

  20. you have showed us and the love that God... that

  21. you allow us to show to one another. And so we

  22. thank you for the freedom we have to come in

  23. here and just experience your word and just the

  24. love of one another tonight. I pray that you

  25. just would bless us, free us from distractions

  26. and worries and the things of this world. And

  27. I pray, dear Lord, that as we read this psalm

  28. tonight, that we would be those who would rejoice

  29. in you. And I ask these things in Jesus' name.

  30. Amen. Psalm 99, verse 1. You're going to see

    Psalms 99:1

  31. a theme here, which we also saw in the last song

  32. that we just sung, and that is that God is holy,

  33. holy, holy. You'll see each little section in

  34. this psalm ends with that particular praise.

  35. Verse 1. Now, we can stop there for a second.

  36. That's a good reminder to us that the Lord is

  37. in control. It's so important for me, maybe not

  38. for you, to continually go back and read God's

  39. Word and even repeat things that you've read

  40. before and verses that you've heard before. Because

  41. if you're like me... and hopefully you're not,

  42. you kind of forget these things. You know, you

  43. get busy with life and stress and all the things

  44. that kind of pop up and maybe there's scriptures

  45. you don't read for a while or truths that you

  46. know from scripture that God reigns and that

  47. God is in control. But sometimes we need to be

  48. reminded of that. And I think that's why it's

  49. important for us to continually read God's word.

  50. It helps us to be grounded. You know, sometimes

  51. we get caught up in the stresses and the worries

  52. of our life. And God's word kind of brings us

  53. back to where we need to be. And I would hope

  54. that all of us would agree of the importance

  55. of continuing to go back to God's word. And I

  56. think that we would because as I look in this

  57. small group tonight, everyone in here has gone

  58. to church probably since they were a small child

  59. and have probably read these verses repeatedly.

  60. You just continue to go back to God's word repeatedly.

  61. Why do we do that? because it's good for us it's

  62. not like oh i've read the bible and and i'm going

  63. to move on but we continue to go back to it and

  64. back to it and back to it because we find strength

  65. and we find guidance and we find correction and

  66. we find encouragement and here at the beginning

  67. of this psalm we are reminded of a truth that

  68. perhaps we need to be reminded of tonight, and

  69. that is the Lord reigns. He is in control. There's

  70. nobody else that's reigning this world. There's

  71. nobody else that's ruling this world. It is the

  72. Lord who reigns. He reigns supreme. No one will

  73. ever knock God from his throne. He is the one

  74. who reigns in our life. And so no matter what

  75. we go through tonight, we have to remember that

  76. God is in control. Let the peoples tremble. He

  77. is enthroned above the cherubim. Let the earth

  78. quake. Yahweh is great in Zion. He is exalted

  79. above all the peoples. And so we see this idea

  80. that the people are going to tremble, that the

  81. earth is going to quake. Well, why is that? Because

  82. when God shows up onto the scene, when God is

  83. present, it's a powerful thing. And we see that.

  84. Especially in the Old Testament, we see when

  85. God shows up, it's a powerful thing to those

  86. who experience and see his presence. And you

  87. may remember when the people got delivered out

  88. of Egypt and God was on the mountain and they

  89. said, hold up, Moses, we don't want to go anywhere

  90. near God. We're going to keep our distance. We

  91. don't even want to go up on the mountain because

  92. they could see the power and the presence of

  93. God. And so we see that exhibited. in several

  94. instances in the Old Testament, the very instances

  95. where the ground does shake and quake and people

  96. do tremble. And that's what the psalmist is reminding

  97. us of here. Hey, the Lord reigns and we need

  98. to recognize the power of the Lord. It says he's

  99. enthroned above the cherubim. Now, when you look

  100. in the Old Testament, you read about the Ark

  101. of the Covenant. And when the people built the

  102. Ark of the Covenant, there were two cherubim

  103. on the top, and they were sitting, and their

  104. wings were kind of touching in the middle. And

  105. it says that that's where God would descend in

  106. that most holy place, the Holy of Holies, where

  107. the Ark would reside, and that God would descend

  108. there on the cherubim of the Ark, and that was

  109. where God would come to dwell amongst the people

  110. in the presence of his people. And so just a

  111. reminder to that here. Verse 3. Let them praise

  112. your great and awe -inspiring name. So he acknowledged

  113. that God reigns, that God is all -powerful, that

  114. we should acknowledge his power and tremble in

  115. the presence of his power and know that he dwells

  116. among us, not in the same way he did in the Old

  117. Testament. We don't have an ark of the covenant,

  118. and we don't have cherubim, and God doesn't descend

  119. upon us in that way, but God dwells with us through

  120. the Holy Spirit in a new way, in a better way.

  121. than the old way. A better way has come through

  122. Jesus Christ. And so the psalmist here says,

  123. let them praise your great and awe -inspiring

  124. name. So we have a call here in acknowledging

  125. the power and the greatness of God that we are

  126. to praise him. And then it says at the end of

  127. this first section here, he is holy. That is,

  128. he's set apart, he's different. He's different

  129. than any other being, than any other thing that

  130. exists. God is unique and that he is eternal.

  131. He has always been all powerful. He has always

  132. been in control. He has created all things. And

  133. so he is holy, he is different, he is unique,

  134. he is set apart. And the Bible calls us to be

  135. holy through Jesus Christ, to seek to be more

  136. like God, to see those qualities of God, the

  137. commands of God, the instructions of God, that

  138. we would seek to be holy. Now, we'll never be

  139. fully holy as God is, but that's our goal, that's

  140. our example, that's our motivation, that's our

  141. desire, is that we would be holy as God is holy.

  142. That's what the Scripture calls us to. Verse

  143. 4, the mighty king loves justice. You have established

  144. fairness. You have administered justice and righteousness

  145. in Jacob. Now, we see lots of qualities of God

  146. exhibited through Scripture, and here we see

  147. a couple of these mentioned, that one, he's a

  148. mighty king, he's powerful, and two, that he

  149. loves justice. Justice. Now, justice means that

  150. every evil has to be dealt with. That God, he

  151. is a gracious God and he is a merciful God, but

  152. he is a just God. And all of these things are

  153. true about God. One doesn't outweigh the other.

  154. God is just. And being just, God must punish

  155. evil. Evil must be dealt with. Sin must be dealt

  156. with. And that's the sign of a good king. It's

  157. to deal with those who are doing evil. Now, praise

  158. the Lord, sometimes God is merciful. There are

  159. certainly things in the Old Testament that God

  160. said, here's the punishment for this. Death is

  161. the punishment for whatever sin it might be.

  162. But we also see sometimes that people commit

  163. those sins that called for death in the Old Testament

  164. law. And yet God doesn't always kill them. God

  165. is sometimes merciful. When that's part of God

  166. too. God is a merciful God. He's a just God.

  167. He's a merciful God. He's a jealous God. He's

  168. a lot of different things. And they're all true

  169. about him. And sometimes people experience the

  170. wrath of God when God is bringing justice. But

  171. sometimes God is merciful. But even in God being

  172. merciful, justice still has to occur. And praise

  173. the Lord for us that that occurs through Jesus

  174. Christ. That justice is served. That there's

  175. a penalty that has to be served or has to be

  176. carried out. And that penalty is carried out

  177. by Jesus Christ on the cross. And so we receive

  178. mercy and grace through Jesus Christ. But that

  179. doesn't mean that God has forgotten about being

  180. just. It means that Jesus Christ has taken that

  181. punishment that we deserve so that we can receive

  182. the mercy. So that we can receive the graciousness

  183. of God. And so God is a just God. He has established

  184. fairness. He is a fair God. We can't accuse God

  185. of being unfair. Everything he does, he is right

  186. to do it. And he is fair in what he does. We

  187. may not always understand it. We may not always

  188. like it. But God is fair. Now, when we talk about

  189. fairness in our world today, you may hear the

  190. word equality a lot. And a lot of times when

  191. you talk about fairness and equality, when you

  192. hear it, it means that everybody's supposed to

  193. have the same of everything all the time. But

  194. that's not necessarily what it means. You can

  195. be fair to somebody and things not necessarily

  196. be equal. There's a difference between being

  197. unfair and unequal. Everybody is not treated

  198. equally. We're not all exactly the same, but

  199. God is not unfair to any one person. God is a

  200. fair king. He's a just and a fair king. It says

  201. you have administered justice and righteousness

  202. in Jacob. Verse 5. Exalt the Lord our God. Bow

  203. in worship at his footstool. He is holy. So again,

  204. we see in the first section there this call to

  205. praise. Here we see again this call to exalt

  206. the Lord and for what reason? He is holy. And

  207. then in this third section here we see verse

  208. 6. Moses and Aaron were among his priests. Samuel

  209. also was among those calling on his name. They

  210. called to Yahweh and he answered them. He spoke

  211. to them in a pillar of cloud. They kept his decrees

  212. and the statutes he gave them. Lord our God,

  213. you answered them. You are a forgiving God to

  214. them and avenger of their sinful actions. Now,

  215. here we are reminded about some Old Testament

  216. figures, Moses and Aaron and Samuel. And it says

  217. here that they were forgiven. Well, praise the

  218. Lord. This is another good thing that we see

  219. about God, that he is a forgiving God. Now, some

  220. of your translations may read a little different

  221. there. It may read that Israel is forgiven. And

  222. so there's some discussion to be had of whether

  223. it's talking about individual occurrences that

  224. these men were sinful in some way and God was

  225. gracious to them, or whether it's referencing

  226. occasions where these people interceded. And

  227. we do see that in Scripture sometimes with Moses

  228. or with Samuel, that they intercede for the people

  229. because the people are doing something evil or

  230. calling for something evil. And so that seems

  231. to be maybe more likely. But it could be speaking

  232. just of these three guys and something they did.

  233. Regardless of which interpretation is correct,

  234. both things are true. God is gracious to us.

  235. When we sin against him, if we would repent,

  236. God will forgive us. Sometimes there are occasions

  237. that we may intercede for other people or we

  238. may pray for them and lift them up. But the key

  239. that we see here is that God is a forgiving God.

  240. Yes, he's a just God. He's a God of wrath. And

  241. that's a scary thing. But it's a beautiful thing

  242. that God is also a forgiving God. So we don't

  243. have to experience the wrath of God. We don't

  244. have to experience punishment from a just God.

  245. Instead, we can receive salvation through Jesus

  246. Christ. And we can be made righteous through

  247. Jesus Christ. We can be forgiven. And so we praise

  248. the Lord for that. And so we serve a God who

  249. is worthy of our praise, who is to be praised

  250. and to be exalted, for he is holy. And that's

  251. what we see here at the conclusion of this psalm.

  252. Exalt the Lord our God, bow in worship at his

  253. holy mountain, for the Lord your God is holy.

  254. Basically, what we see in this psalm is that

  255. this is a psalm of praise, reminding us of the

  256. power of God, that God is a just God, but that

  257. God is a loving God and God is full of forgiveness

  258. and there is no other like him. God is set apart,

  259. he is unique, he is different, and he reigns

  260. over all things. So let us praise God tonight.

  261. Let's pray. We thank you for your word, dear

  262. Lord, and I pray that you would help us to live

  263. by this word. And whatever we may be going through

  264. in life that is too much for us, that's too heavy

  265. right now, I pray, God, that we would just seek

  266. you and remember that you reign, that you are

  267. in control. Dear Lord, sometimes you do things

  268. that we don't understand, things that don't make

  269. sense, but dear Lord, You are fair and you are

  270. good and you are right in all you do. So help

  271. us, dear Lord, to trust you and not question

  272. you or doubt you or give up on you, but to continue

  273. to praise you on the good days and on the bad.

  274. And I ask these things in Jesus' name. Amen.
