  1. Welcome to the Liberty Baptist Sermon Archives.

  2. The message you're about to hear was preached at Liberty Baptist

  3. Church in Easton, MA. You can find out more about us

  4. or contact us at my libertybaptist.org or just look

  5. us up on Facebook. And now we hope that this

  6. message from God's Word will be a blessing to you.

  7. Turn in your Bibles, the second Corinthians chapter #5 this

  8. morning. Brother Vince, would you grab my

  9. clicker right there on the back shelf and bring it up?

  10. You like that, Brother John? That was good.

  11. I've been practicing that for the last few weeks.

  12. Yeah, yeah. You could toss it up here, but

  13. thank you very much. Drake May himself.

  14. All right, thank you. The Second Corinthians chapter

  15. #5 And we're going to be looking this morning as we finish our

  16. miniseries on the Church of Jesus Christ, the Latter Day

  17. Saints, the Mormons. We're going to be looking at how

  18. do we witness to a Mormon? We've talked a lot about the

  19. Mormon Church. We've talked a lot about the

  20. fallacies of their teaching. But here's the thing, What

  21. happens when you get a on your door and there's two young men,

  22. probably in their very early 20s who have come to their door or

  23. come to your door and they want to talk to you about Jesus

  24. Christ. Well, how are you going to be

  25. able to witness to them? Because again, if they say elder

  26. so and so on that name tag, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter

  27. Day Saints, they are lost. They do not know the true Jesus

  28. Christ as their savior. How do you interact with them?

  29. What do you do? What do you say?

  30. What do you do if you meet a Mormon who works at your

  31. workplace or someone at a place that you've had some

  32. opportunities to talk to them and they believe that they're a

  33. Christian just like you? Hey, you're a Christian, I'm a

  34. Christian. We go to different

  35. denominations, but we're just the same, aren't we?

  36. Well, of course, as we've seen the last several weeks, the

  37. answer to that is an emphatic no.

  38. We are not the same. We're not just talking about

  39. some subtle denominational difference.

  40. We're talking about preaching the truth against preaching

  41. error, as they do in the Mormon church.

  42. And so how do we share the gospel with these types of

  43. people? Well, as I've mentioned you

  44. before, remember that large flow chart that we had that showed

  45. how someone could make it to the Kingdom?

  46. And of course there were three levels of kingdoms as well.

  47. And the celestial Kingdom, the terrestrial Kingdom and the

  48. terrestrial Kingdom, those three different kingdoms, how does

  49. someone come to know that they are going to be part of the

  50. Kingdom in the Mormon church? Well, before we get to what I

  51. want to show you this morning, I have a video that we show you

  52. that's very much in the vein of the same gentleman who gave us

  53. the video from the Jehovah Witnesses of probably about a

  54. month or two ago. Do you remember when he asked

  55. that young man that Jehovah Witness said can you in 3

  56. minutes I'm dying? Can you tell me how that I can

  57. know I'm going to have him? Does the same thing with a young

  58. woman. I would like to tell you,

  59. certainly she seems like she's a little bit flustered by the fact

  60. that she only has about 3 minutes to be able to explain

  61. this. But the issue is not necessarily

  62. this man is kind of putting her in a time crunch.

  63. It's trying to illustrate that it should be easy to explain

  64. what salvation is. And that she is representative

  65. of many Mormons who have no idea what it means to even be able to

  66. go to the Kingdom and helps us to understand how we have an

  67. opportunity to be able to reach them with the gospel.

  68. So if we had that, Brother Scott, let's go ahead and show

  69. that. The foundation of Mormonism is

  70. idolatry. Their God lives on a planet

  71. called Kolob or his multiple wives.

  72. They preach another gospel 1 of salvation by works and they have

  73. another Jesus, the brother of Lucifer.

  74. They only pay lip service to the Bible because they have their

  75. own so-called holy book which denies the existence of hell and

  76. allows Adolf Hitler to make it into the 3rd heaven. 3 times

  77. this young lady looked to her friends to be rescued.

  78. Finally they got the hint and took her away before she heard

  79. the biblical gospel. Do you think there's an

  80. afterlife? Yes.

  81. Are you a Christian? Yes, have.

  82. You been born again. I've been baptized.

  83. It mean born again. So I'm a member of the Church of

  84. Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

  85. The question for you. There's a knife in my back.

  86. I've got 3 minutes to live. How can I enter the Kingdom?

  87. How can I get saved? What should I do?

  88. I've got 3 minutes. I'm dying.

  89. Enter the Kingdom. Well, you need to.

  90. I got 2 1/2 minutes quick 2. And a half minutes.

  91. I'm dying. I'm going to teach you about

  92. Jesus well. Do it because I've now got 2

  93. minutes you. Need to accept Jesus as your

  94. savior? How do I do that?

  95. Allow His atonement to work through you.

  96. Accept Him, and let accept that he died for you, and that He

  97. took upon him all of your sins, and then just.

  98. Is that all I have to do? Also allow yourself to

  99. understand that. One minute, Oh my gosh, blood

  100. straining out of my body. I'm going, you know, I've, I've

  101. come talk to him. Over there.

  102. Go talk to him over there. I'm a fornicator, I'm a liar,

  103. I'm a thief. I've broken the commandments.

  104. I know I'm a big trouble on judgement day.

  105. I think I'm going to go to hell. And what have I got to do again

  106. you? Just have to accept Jesus and be

  107. baptized and follow him and follow.

  108. Hey I got 40 seconds, how do I get baptized?

  109. Find somebody who has the authority to baptize.

  110. I can't move. I'm dying.

  111. I've now got 15 seconds. Here.

  112. We're going. To call somebody.

  113. Quickly. I'm under pressure.

  114. I don't. So you can't help me, cannot get

  115. up. I am.

  116. I'm dead. It's all over.

  117. I've gone to hell and you couldn't help me.

  118. No, you didn't go. Dead.

  119. I'm dead. No, you didn't go to hell.

  120. Oh yes, I did. Oh, you just went to the spirit

  121. world. When Jesus said he said fear not

  122. humorous power to kill your body and cast your soul into hell.

  123. Fear him. Jesus said that he said the

  124. place where the fire is never quenched and the worm never

  125. dies. The Bible speaks to the lake of

  126. fire and I'm terrified while I've gone.

  127. Let me let me share with you a couple of thoughts.

  128. Remember the thief on the cross? Yes.

  129. Did he get baptized? I.

  130. Don't remember. No, you don't.

  131. I. Think so.

  132. He was nailed to the cross. He couldn't go anywhere, he

  133. couldn't do anything. Right, OK.

  134. All over. Yeah, sorry.

  135. No, no, it's not. He has another chance.

  136. I. Don't.

  137. I've gone. Hey, thanks for talking to me.

  138. Bye bye. I kind of added that.

  139. I kind of added that music in there, if you like that.

  140. No, that was no, that was the way that it came.

  141. But no, it's again, very illustrative of the fact that

  142. there seems to be some answers that sound like something that

  143. we would say, but then when you dig below the surface, you

  144. realize, oh, this, there is no salvation.

  145. But hey, that's OK because there's still a chance you're

  146. die, you're dead, but you you can still make it somewhere

  147. else. And again, that flow chart that

  148. we showed you before. And I want to make clear as we

  149. go through these things, you think, well, how on earth am I

  150. going to reach a, if I don't remember all of these things

  151. that we have learned? How am I reach Jehovah Witness

  152. if I don't remember all the things we've learned?

  153. I, I'm sure that you're not going to remember all the things

  154. that we've gone over in, well, 22 weeks of trying to talk about

  155. false religions and Islam and Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons so

  156. far. But I do believe there's some

  157. things that will help you here this morning, specifically with

  158. the Mormons, but also that we could apply several of these to

  159. some of these other cults and world religions as well.

  160. So let's go ahead and start looking at these and we'll first

  161. look at #1 which is this Start with the sinlessness of Christ.

  162. Start with the sinlessness of Christ.

  163. You know, it's often better to start with someone that you

  164. have, or let me put it this way, it's it's often better to start

  165. when you're talking with someone with something that you might

  166. have in common to bring common ground.

  167. Now we're not talking about hiding the truth.

  168. This is what the Mormons will do is that they will try to hide

  169. the ball from you and not actually tell you about all of

  170. these other things. I'm just talking about in the

  171. course of a conversation. Why don't you start first with

  172. something that you might have in common and then when you have

  173. common ground, be able to show where the differences are.

  174. One of those places that you can show common ground is with the

  175. sinlessness of Christ because of the Mormons will at least give

  176. lip service to the sinlessness of Jesus Christ.

  177. Now do they believe that he is the Jesus Christ of the Bible?

  178. No, they believe that he is the brother of Lucifer.

  179. They believe that he is not very God like Father, Son and Holy

  180. Ghost as the Bible teaches. Yet there is a place that you

  181. can kind of have a starting point with them talking of the

  182. sinlessness of Christ. Now God's Word shows us that

  183. Christ was sinless in every way, and that's why we're starting in

  184. Second Corinthians chapter 5. Look at verse #18 with me, if

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  185. you will. It's a great place to be able to

  186. start 2nd Corinthians 5 verse 18.

  187. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by

  188. Jesus Christ, and have given to us the ministry of

  189. reconciliation. By the way, why do we need to

  190. reach the Mormons? Because Jesus Christ reconciled

  191. us to the Father, and we now have the ministry of

  192. reconciliation to bring other people to Jesus Christ as well.

  193. The ministry that I am in is the.

  194. Very same ministry to be honest with you that you are in the

  195. ministry of reconciliation. I'm in full time quote UN quote

  196. ministry, but really we're all to be full time ministers of the

  197. ministry of reconciliation. Verse 19 To wit, that God was in

  198. Christ reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their

  199. trespasses unto them, and has committed us to the unto us the

  200. word of reconciliation them we are ambassadors for Christ, as

  201. through as though God did beseech you by us.

  202. We pray you in Christ's stead be reconciled to God, for he hath

  203. made him to be sin for us who what knew no sin, that we might

  204. be made the righteousness of God in him.

  205. So where can we start with a more?

  206. But we can start with the fact that Jesus knew no sin and the

  207. sin of the world was placed upon him.

  208. And reconciliation therefore comes through who Jesus Christ.

  209. And you'll find some common ground here with a Mormon.

  210. Now again, they take that very basic truth and run in an

  211. opposite direction of what the Bible teaches.

  212. But you could take them there and help them to understand what

  213. the the sinlessness of Jesus Christ means.

  214. He. 726 and 27 you want to turn there, but it's for such an high

  215. priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate

  216. from sinners, higher than the heavens, who needed not daily as

  217. those high priests to OfferUp sacrifice first for his own sins

  218. and then for the peoples. For this he did once when he

  219. offered up himself. Listen, even Mormons would

  220. acknowledge that Joseph Smith was a sinful creature.

  221. Even Mormons would acknowledge that he was not sinless, as

  222. Jesus Christ was sinless. So again, this gives you a great

  223. jumping off place in a conversation with them.

  224. Because Christ's perfection is found for the true Bible

  225. believing faith as well as Mormonism.

  226. A person who begins with this doctrine meets a Mormon on

  227. common ground. But if you're talking to a

  228. Mormon, ask him if he believes about Jesus perfectionism.

  229. Let him express his understanding until you start to

  230. hear the differences emerge between that and Christianity.

  231. And then when that moment arrives, ask simple questions

  232. that reveal how other Mormon beliefs are inconsistent with

  233. this conviction. So allow them to talk about a

  234. little bit as they do talk about Jesus, and you started this

  235. common ground, you'll start to hear things that are not common

  236. ground. You'll start to hear things that

  237. are unbiblical. And this gives you places to be

  238. able to have conversation and to be able to start to show them

  239. the truth. You might even ask how your

  240. friend understands Jesus's perfect words, because if Jesus

  241. was perfect and sinless. His words were.

  242. Perfect as well, so you could ask them, well, how do you feel

  243. about Matthew 2435? Heaven and earth shall pass

  244. away, but my word shall not pass away.

  245. If the perfect Jesus established his gospel forever, then why

  246. does it need to be restored? Why was Joseph Smith necessary?

  247. Was Jesus's promise incorrect? Was Jesus lying when he spoke

  248. about this? It was Jesus just not

  249. understanding what the truth was.

  250. Listen, any of those things would be problematic.

  251. It just happens to be that Jesus was who He said He was, and the

  252. gospel does not need restoring, because the gospel has always

  253. been. If your Mormon friend says,

  254. well, God needs new prophets to bring new revelation, you can go

  255. to Hebrews chapter 1, verses one and two.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  256. God, who at sundry times in divers manners spake in time

  257. passed under the fathers, by the prophets, hath in these last

  258. days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed heir of

  259. all things, by whom also He made the world.

  260. Jesus is the one who speaks to us today.

  261. He is the living Word. We have the Word in front of us.

  262. We don't need something new. And Jesus Christ is perfect.

  263. And so being able to start there, you'll start to see, as

  264. you discussed, the cracks emerge in their belief, and you follow

  265. those cracks as they go along, and then you're able to talk to

  266. them about other biblical doctrines as well.

  267. Now #2 goes in hand, in hand with #1 and that's this.

  268. Show them the sufficiency of Christ, sufficiency of Christ.

  269. Christ isn't just perfect. He is perfectly sufficient to

  270. meet the needs of mankind. Meaning it's this, It's Jesus

  271. and nothing else. That's what salvation is.

  272. It is not Jesus and self. It is not Jesus and work, Jesus

  273. and money, Jesus and membership, Jesus and baptism, Jesus and any

  274. of those things you know, Christ is sufficient to save us without

  275. any of our help. Listen, Mormons don't believe

  276. that. That Jesus just got the ball

  277. rolling. But you need to be involved in

  278. your own salvation. This isn't just Adam Rivero

  279. talking. This is their own prophets who

  280. say this. For instance, Listen,

  281. immortality has been accomplished by the Savior's

  282. sacrifice. Eternal life hangs in the

  283. balance awaiting the works of men.

  284. That was Spencer Kimball, the 12th LDS president, back in the

  285. 1980s, a book called The Miracle of Forgiveness.

  286. It even has the page page 208. So if you have that at home,

  287. just go to page 208 and you'll find it.

  288. But listen, blasphemous immortality has been

  289. accomplished by the Savior's sacrifice.

  290. Eternal life hangs in the balance awaiting the works of

  291. men. Meaning this Christ's sacrifice

  292. was not sufficient. Christ's sacrifice wasn't

  293. enough. Christ needs you to be able to

  294. save yourself. That's a blasphemous statement.

  295. That's a blasphemous thought. And the the Jehovah Witness, or

  296. rather the Mormons, will give lip service to the fact that

  297. Jesus is perfect, but he's not perfectly able to save you.

  298. He needs you like Uncle Sam. I need you, Jesus.

  299. I need you to be able to finish your salvation.

  300. There's nothing biblical about that whatsoever.

  301. When Paul addresses the false teaching about Jesus to the

  302. church at Colossus, we don't know exactly all the details of

  303. this false teaching, but we do know this.

  304. He paints a picture of the fullness and sufficiency of

  305. Jesus Christ. So why don't you turn to

  306. Colossians chapter 2? This doesn't necessarily talk of

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  307. Mormonism, but certainly it does give us a better understanding

  308. of the sufficiency of Christ. Colossians chapter #2 We'll look

  309. at verse 8 to start. Beware lest any man spoil you

  310. through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of

  311. men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

  312. Now look at this. For in Him.

  313. Now who's the Him? Well, you can go back up to the

  314. previous verse. What's the last word of verse #8

  315. Christ. For in him that would be Christ

  316. dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily meaning this

  317. Jesus is God. There is no contradiction.

  318. There is no question about that whatsoever.

  319. And ye are what's that next word?

  320. Complete in Him which is the head of all principality and

  321. power. We are complete in Jesus Christ.

  322. No, we do not complete ourselves after Jesus gives us a head

  323. start. Jesus is not the one who gets

  324. the ball rolling. And then you are the one who

  325. saves yourself so that you can become a God and have your own

  326. spirit children and populate your own worlds.

  327. No, no, we see that we are complete and Jesus Christ He is

  328. sufficient as these New Testament passages model.

  329. You want to move your Mormon friends or those Mormon

  330. acquaintances that you meet who are on your doorstep from

  331. Christ's perfection to His sufficiency.

  332. Help them to understand that Jesus Christ is enough.

  333. Ask questions again to be able to understand exactly what they

  334. think they need to do to be able to help themselves to eternal

  335. life, to salvation. Ask questions.

  336. We'll talk more about that in a few moments.

  337. But you can find passages like these and others that would show

  338. that the sufficiency of Christ is real.

  339. We just saw this morning's brother Vince read several

  340. different passages for us, that when Jesus died on the cross

  341. that the veil was rent in twain. The Bible says it was ripped in

  342. two. What does that mean?

  343. That the work was done, It was complete, It is finished.

  344. Wasn't saying that Jesus was giving up his life, He's giving

  345. up the ghost. That would happen later.

  346. It is finished. What was the finished?

  347. The work that was done, paying the atonement for our sins, that

  348. was what was finished. He would give up in the ghost a

  349. few moments later. But the idea is this, it is

  350. done. It is sufficient.

  351. We can't help ourselves to get to heaven.

  352. We get in the way of getting ourselves to heaven.

  353. We're the ones that have been the stumbling block to

  354. ourselves. Even accept Jesus Christ in the

  355. 1st place. We are not the answer, we are

  356. the problem. We are the one that needs

  357. saving. And so point out how sufficient

  358. Christ is #3 as you go, define your terms.

  359. I've said this before, I'll say it again, because Voltaire was

  360. an atheist. He was a not a very kind man.

  361. He hated Christians. But he has this one quote that I

  362. really like. So I use it all the time.

  363. And I've used it since Bible college.

  364. And it's this. If you wish to converse with me,

  365. define your terms. If you wish to converse with me,

  366. define your terms. Now I've lived through this in

  367. my life growing up, as I've told you before, I was a Lutheran

  368. before I became saved and then became a Bible believing

  369. Baptist. I went to a Christian School.

  370. And so people would ask me for a long time, they would say, are

  371. you saved? And my answer would be yes,

  372. meaning I thought I was going to heaven, but was I saved the

  373. Bible way? Well, the answer is no.

  374. So they would say, are you saved?

  375. And then they would mean are you saved by faith through Jesus

  376. Christ. When I'd say I was saved, I

  377. meant something like this. Well, I'm saved because I was

  378. baptized as a baby and I'd take the Lord's Supper.

  379. I would even say I would save by grace through faith because

  380. that's what the Lutheran Church would say.

  381. Martin Luther made a big deal about that even while still

  382. holding to the sacraments, giving eternal life.

  383. And so we see the Bible does not teach that.

  384. So we would be saying the same things.

  385. The Baptist and myself as a Lutheran, we would say the same

  386. thing, but we meant 2 completely different things.

  387. So as you're talking with a Mormon, you remember that video

  388. that she used, terms that would seem to suggest that we were on

  389. common ground, but yet we are not on common ground even in the

  390. terms in which she would use and we would use.

  391. For instance, I would say, I believe that Jesus is God.

  392. A Mormon would say, great, so do I Jesus is so important to our

  393. faith. I would say, well, I believe

  394. that salvation is a work of grace.

  395. And that Mormon would say, so do I Unless it's by God's grace, I

  396. have no hope. I would say I believe the Bible

  397. is God's word. And the Mormon would say so do

  398. I. The Bible is central to our

  399. faith. You would seem like men.

  400. We're the same person. It would seem like we believe

  401. the same thing. And that's why you have to be

  402. very careful when speaking to the Mormons to be able to

  403. understand that although they might be trying to build that

  404. common ground, there really is no common ground to be able to

  405. be found when it comes to the issue of who Jesus Christ is,

  406. who God the Father, the Son, the Holy Ghost is, what salvation

  407. is, what baptism is. She used a word I believe

  408. atonement, that they wouldn't understand what the atonement

  409. truly is, that they use the same terms.

  410. But don't be fooled by that. Listen, Mormons are taught that

  411. there are 6 different meanings for the word salvation. 6.

  412. Salvation for physical death, salvation from sin, being born

  413. again, salvation from ignorance, salvation from the second death,

  414. exaltation or eternal life. All of those are baked into the

  415. cake when they use the term salvation.

  416. So listen, you could talk about are you saved?

  417. And they could be thinking about any of those things.

  418. So you have to be very careful when you talk to them.

  419. Here's what it comes down to. And I will tell you, this has

  420. been so good for me, going through these lessons and being

  421. able to understand better how to talk to the cultists, to be able

  422. to better talk to those who believe in false religion.

  423. Because a lot of times in dealing with these types of

  424. folks, I have found that I have taken more.

  425. I wouldn't even say necessarily a combative stance because I'm

  426. not trying to combat them, but I would say this, that I was

  427. certainly more willing to win an argument than wanting to win

  428. their heart. It's almost like I wanted to

  429. prove to them Jesus was God. And really, that's not the

  430. point. You say, well, that's not the

  431. point. Well, of course they have to

  432. understand that Jesus is God to be saved.

  433. But the real point is not to just prove them that Jesus is

  434. God. I win and they still go to hell.

  435. The point is I want them to understand they need to accept

  436. that same Jesus to be saved. And so because of that has

  437. helped me to understand that the way that I approach this ought

  438. to be a lot different, meaning this you ought to ask a lot of

  439. questions, come into these conversations like you know

  440. nothing about Mormonism. And I'm not saying lie.

  441. I'm not saying to try to present yourself falsely, but ask

  442. questions to understand what they believe.

  443. And in doing so, that will help you to be able to define your

  444. terms. Here's where you can find hope

  445. and comfort in the fact You say, well, pastor, I don't remember

  446. what I was supposed to say to Jehovah Witnesses.

  447. We looked at the witnessing to Jehovah Witness about, you know,

  448. a month and a half ago. I don't remember what I was

  449. supposed to say from that. You know, what do I do?

  450. Well, here's what you can do with a Jehovah Witness you can

  451. do with a Mormon. Listen, you can do with anybody.

  452. Just ask questions. Just ask them questions.

  453. For instance, you talk a lot about atonement.

  454. What does that mean to you? Have you ever been baptized for

  455. a dead person? Why did you do that?

  456. Where do you see that in the Bible?

  457. Can you explain to me why you think they're modern prophets?

  458. Why don't the prophets always agree?

  459. I know some Mormon prophets have taught that Adam was God.

  460. Do you believe that by asking questions rather than just

  461. making accusations, you can draw out a person's heart and

  462. understand more about who they are and where they're coming

  463. from and to be able to have a better biblical conversation,

  464. all while being able to know where they're coming from

  465. without having to remember. Oh, what did the Mormons

  466. believe? How is it different than Jehovah

  467. Witnesses? I don't remember.

  468. I don't know what to say. We'll just ask them and even

  469. just say, you know, I know there's some similarities

  470. between the Jehovah Witnesses and the Mormons, but maybe can

  471. you tell me a little bit about that?

  472. You say, well, would they be insulted?

  473. I think they would probably just say, well, we're not like

  474. Jehovah Witnesses. They they'd say, well, and we'll

  475. start giving you and now all of a sudden you have some things to

  476. talk about because you have asked questions because you'll

  477. start hearing things. You say, Nope, that's not in the

  478. Bible. That's not in the Bible.

  479. That's not in the Bible. This gives you points of

  480. conversation, ask questions. Proverbs 20 verse 5 says, as

    Proverbs 20:5

  481. counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of

  482. understanding will draw it out. Meaning this, that you are not

  483. going into an adversarial, combative situation with this

  484. person. What are you trying to do?

  485. You're trying to draw the error out of them so that you

  486. understand why they believe what they believe so that you can

  487. then give them the truth. Again, we're not talking about

  488. hiding the truth. We're not talking about

  489. listening to error and saying, Oh yeah, well, Oh well, well,

  490. God bless you and walking away. We're talking about having a

  491. real conversation and being able to present the truth to them.

  492. But don't you think you have a better opportunity to be able to

  493. talk to one of these people with that type of comfort, with that

  494. type of situation than being confrontational?

  495. I've told you 2 stories about dealing with Jehovah Witnesses.

  496. I've dealt with a lot more Jehovah Witnesses, the Mormons,

  497. over the years. But I've talked to you about one

  498. that was more combative, that was out here on the parking lot

  499. where they were trying to win me to Jehovah Witness to be a job

  500. witness in the parking lot of the Church of which I pastor.

  501. And I had to tell, and I started with this.

  502. I said, listen, you know, don't give me the new world

  503. translation because that's a corrupt translation.

  504. Now I'm right in that. But you know where that

  505. conversation went? Nowhere.

  506. It would absolutely nowhere because I shut them down before

  507. we started. The best conversation I've ever

  508. had with Jehovah Witnesses, as I mentioned to you before, was

  509. when I was in Vermont and I saw three of them sitting there.

  510. They're really the saddest looking people I ever saw.

  511. A mother, a father and a teenage daughter.

  512. And it was hot and they were sitting there and that you could

  513. just tell they were like, is our hour done yet?

  514. You know, they were waiting to get out of there.

  515. So I bought them bottles of water at the store, a cold

  516. bottles of water and brought it to him.

  517. I started talking to him and I started asking him questions and

  518. I talked about different things and I asked him, you know, you

  519. know, why would you? Because I tried to give him a

  520. track and they said they'd, you know, they wouldn't take.

  521. I said, why would you not? Why would you not take a track?

  522. I don't mind taking one of your pieces of literature.

  523. You know, we had a good conversation here, dude.

  524. Why would why would you be afraid to take a little piece of

  525. paper that, well, we're not allowed to do that.

  526. Where, where does it say in the Bible to be able to do that?

  527. Can I tell you, I still wonder if I had an impact on them that

  528. day more than anyone else ever talked to.

  529. I'm not saying they got saved that day, but I'm wondering if I

  530. planted something and Lord willing, someone else watered

  531. and hopefully someday I meet him in heaven.

  532. I pray that would be the case. But what is that?

  533. What's the difference? Well, I was able to go define

  534. terms. I was able to ask questions.

  535. It was a different way of looking at it.

  536. Listen, if I've learned anything about studying these cults and

  537. studying these false religions, it's this, that they are so

  538. typically mistreated when they go to a door that they are

  539. expecting you're going to be a jerk.

  540. Now listen, they're peddling falsehood.

  541. I don't know that I feel sorry for them, but I will say this,

  542. that just the fact that you treat them with just a tiny bit

  543. of decency will go such a long way.

  544. I've made a point to Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons and

  545. talking to them before to say, listen, I appreciate what you do

  546. and I stand up for the right for what you do because we do the

  547. same. But I do say this, but we have a

  548. different message. I support your right to be able

  549. to go to door to door because it's what we do as a church as

  550. well. But I will say don't be fooled.

  551. Our messages are different. They are not the same.

  552. And even in that, there's a little common ground.

  553. Well, they support what we do. Well, I was able to tell them,

  554. yeah, we support what you do in the sense that legally you

  555. should be allowed to do it because we have the

  556. constitutional right to be able to do so.

  557. But you also are wrong in what you're doing.

  558. And I want to tell you why. So making accusations or or

  559. saying, Hey, did you know you're you're God lives on the planet

  560. Kolob. Probably not a great way to

  561. start. Did did you did you know, did

  562. you know your God had a physical relations with Mary and that's

  563. how Jesus was born? That's not a great way to start.

  564. Now, is that a great way to win an argument?

  565. Probably because you're going to show them how absurd they are.

  566. Are you going to win them to Christ?

  567. Probably not. So just define the terms.

  568. You're not trying to win an argument, you are trying to win

  569. them to Christ. And if in general, just remind

  570. yourself this, don't quarrel, question, don't quarrel, don't

  571. have a quarrel with them. Again, that doesn't mean that

  572. you're not emphatic about what you believe, but you're not

  573. trying to start an argument. Just ask them questions if

  574. you're not sure you know, you know what is Mormonism like what

  575. what, what do you believe? What, what is your church like?

  576. You know, and as you just have an honest conversation with

  577. them, you will find plenty of things to be able to talk to

  578. them about the word of God because you've drawn it out of

  579. them in a very normal conversation.

  580. Their guard will come down. They won't be so as willing to

  581. be able to maybe be adversarial as they were in the beginning.

  582. Unless I'm not saying you're going to win them to Christ

  583. necessarily. In fact, the chances are very

  584. low that you're going to win a cultist to Christ at your door.

  585. I'm not saying it can't happen, but I'm saying it's very low

  586. because they're coming to be able to win you.

  587. It's unlikely you'll do the opposite.

  588. But what if you just push them a little bit closer to Jesus

  589. Christ, the real Jesus Christ? Isn't that worth it?

  590. Isn't that what we're trying to do?

  591. So as you go, define your terms #4 show the sufficiency of

  592. Scripture. Here's that word again.

  593. Sufficiency. But it's not just Jesus Christ

  594. that is sufficient. It is the Scriptures that are

  595. sufficient. The eighth article of faith of

  596. the LDS says this. We believe the Bible to be the

  597. word of God as far as it's translated correctly.

  598. Now that is their escape clause, meaning this we believe the

  599. Bible is true, but anything we don't like, what's a

  600. mistranslation? Isn't that kind of what the

  601. Jehovah Witnesses did? And they did it to such a degree

  602. that they created their own Bible.

  603. But interestingly enough that when you interact with a Mormon,

  604. guess what Bible they're going to use, They will be using the

  605. King James Bible. So you will be able to have

  606. familiar verses to be able to interact with them because you

  607. will be on the same ground using the King James Bible as the

  608. Mormons do. However, we believe that the

  609. King James Bible has been preserved for the English people

  610. is perfect, that there is no error within it.

  611. They do not believe that about any Bible.

  612. They do not believe that. And that is their way of saying

  613. if something doesn't agree with them, well, that's just been

  614. corrupted over time. Whenever there's been a problem,

  615. they simply say, oh, well, it wasn't translated correctly.

  616. And by the way, that's why the doctrine of both inspiration and

  617. preservation are so important. The Word of God was inspired,

  618. but it's also been preserved through all generations so that

  619. we can know that we trust the Word of God when we have it in

  620. front of us as we do man. There's a lot of verses about

  621. this. Second Timothy 315 through 17

  622. that from a child thou has known the Holy Scriptures which are

  623. able to make thee wise, and the salvation through faith which is

  624. in Christ Jesus. All scriptures by given by

  625. inspiration of God is proful for doctrine, for reproof, for

  626. correction, for instruction and righteousness, that the man of

  627. God may be perfect again sufficient, thoroughly furnished

  628. unto all good works. Proverbs 30, verses 5:00 and

  629. 6:00. Every word of God is pure.

  630. He is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

  631. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou

  632. be found a liar, and not unto his words.

  633. Isn't that what the Mormons have done they've created three other

  634. holy books to be able to be put on equal footing and really

  635. greater footing than the word of God, but he said this don't add

  636. to it. We can go to the end of the Book

  637. of Revelation. What does it say?

  638. Don't add to it. Don't subtract from it.

  639. Psalm 19 verse 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the

    Psalms 19:7

  640. soul, the testimony the Lord is sure making wise the simple.

  641. Psalm one 19160 The word is true from beginning from the

  642. beginning, and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth

  643. forever. Isaiah 820 Galatians 189 over

  644. and over and over again, the sufficiency, the preservation of

  645. the Scriptures. You can trust the word of God.

  646. You can trust the word of God that you have in front of you.

  647. We thank the Lord for that. The Mormons do not believe that

  648. First Nephi 13, verse 26. After the 12 apostles from the

  649. Jews under the Gentiles, they have taken away from the gospel

  650. of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious, and

  651. also many covenants of the Lord have they taken away.

  652. First Nephi 1328, few verses later.

  653. There are many plain and precious things taken away from

  654. the book which is the book of the Lamb of God.

  655. Few verses later, verse 34. First Nephi chapter 13.

  656. The Gentiles do stumble exceedingly because of the most

  657. plain and precious parts of the gospel which have been kept back

  658. by that abominable church doctrine and covenants 20 verse

  659. 9. The Book of Mormon contains the

  660. fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles and to

  661. the Jews also. Doctrines and Covenants 42 verse

  662. 12, The elders, priests and teachers of this church.

  663. So I'll teach the principles of my gospel which are in the Bible

  664. and the Book of Mormon, in which is the fullness of the gospel.

  665. What are they saying over and over again?

  666. The Bible is not enough, but yet the Bible teaches it is enough.

  667. Listen, you can't have both. The Book of Mormon is a fraud

  668. and a falsehood, and all of its other books like the Pearl of

  669. Great Price and the Doctrines of Covenants, or the Bible is what

  670. it is. They cannot hold the Bible and

  671. say it is one of their holy books when it so plainly

  672. contradicts what the Book of Mormon says.

  673. The fullness of the gospel came through these books.

  674. That means there was no gospel. That means that Jesus Christ was

  675. wrong. That means Jesus Christ did not

  676. do. And again, this goes back to the

  677. sufficiency of Christ, that He was not enough.

  678. No, this is not what is taught. And so there is certainly plenty

  679. of place for conversation about the sufficiency of Scripture and

  680. also those other books as well. Listen, wait to expose

  681. contradictions. Now, is it important for us to

  682. expose contradictions? Well, of course, of course it's

  683. important. But again, as I mentioned

  684. before, don't lead with that. Don't go through and talk about

  685. the most egregious things first. As I said, every time that I've

  686. talked to a Jehovah Witness and I've said something about, well,

  687. the New World Translation is a corrupt translation.

  688. Listen, that ends the conversation.

  689. I'm right, but it ends the conversation.

  690. And so I've learned that that's probably not the best way to go.

  691. In fact, the best way to go is to be able to use their own

  692. corrupted New World translation to be able to show them versus

  693. that still remain that show who Jesus Christ is.

  694. Remember we saw first John 1/3 that they scrub Jesus Christ and

  695. His exclusivity as the Son in John 11, but yet they left an

  696. opening and John 1/3 were able to show that through the New

  697. World translation. But don't start from that point.

  698. This is the place I've failed many times over the years is

  699. again as I mentioned, I've tried to win the argument but not win

  700. the heart and win them to Christ.

  701. Now are there a lot of contradictions in their faith?

  702. Yes. Are they contradiction?

  703. They contradict the Bible, their books contradict the Bible,

  704. their books contradict their own books, and on top of that, their

  705. prophets contradict the books and the prophets contradict each

  706. other. Is that confusing enough for

  707. you? There's plenty of things.

  708. Thank you, Marcia. There are many good things.

  709. It is confusing, isn't it? There are plenty of things that

  710. you can show that are contradictions, but make sure

  711. that you get the conversation to the right place before you start

  712. to be able to expose all these things.

  713. And This is why these in any of these conversations, there's not

  714. A1 size fits all way of dealing with it.

  715. And I want to be careful in how I present this because really

  716. you just have to be led by the spirit.

  717. It would be like saying, well, there's one way to show someone

  718. to Jesus Christ. Well, as long as it's biblical,

  719. you might have many different approaches because people are

  720. different. Some people might need a more

  721. confrontational style. Some people you start like that,

  722. they're gone. They don't want to talk to you.

  723. And so be spirit LED when dealing with these things.

  724. But I will say this, when Jesus talked with the woman at the

  725. well, did he start with this? Hey, woman, you got you had five

  726. husbands and the man that you're living with is not your husband.

  727. I have a feeling that conversation would never have

  728. commenced if he had opened with that.

  729. Now he didn't avoid it. Let's be careful about this.

  730. He didn't say, well, the only way I can reveal who I am is by,

  731. you know, not really dealing with sin.

  732. He dealt with her sin, but he dealt with it at a time when she

  733. heard that that she was pricked in the heart.

  734. She would not have been pricked in the heart.

  735. If he had LED with that at the beginning.

  736. What would have happened? She probably would have just

  737. gone away. Now Jesus knows all hearts so

  738. it's easy for him to be able to do right because he knows every

  739. we don't know every heart and again, that's why it's so

  740. important to be spirit LED got to go through these quickly.

  741. Number six, share the rest that Christ brings.

  742. This is true with all cultists. It's especially true with

  743. Mormons because it's all about works.

  744. There is no rest for them. They do and they do and they do

  745. and they do. And again, you could say this

  746. about Catholicism, you could say this about Jehovah Witnesses,

  747. that it's all about doing works. And so because of that, there's

  748. no real peace. But it is especially true at the

  749. Mormons because of the hoops that they make them jump

  750. through. They have to be able to do

  751. things at the church level or the stake level.

  752. They have to then end up doing things outside of their stake,

  753. outside of their group of churches.

  754. Then they have to do things in the temple, including being

  755. baptized on behalf of the dead. They go through genealogies to

  756. find people who may have died in their family in the past, and

  757. they're baptized on their behalf.

  758. The temple writes the temple rituals.

  759. It goes on and on. On top of the fact that the men

  760. from 18, I think he's 18 years old to 20.

  761. I may be a little bit off on the on the ages, but I do know all

  762. Mormon men are supposed to give two years to missionary work and

  763. all Mormon women 18 months to mission work right at the

  764. beginning of their lives. They gave their adulthood

  765. rather. And So what are they doing?

  766. They've been working and working and working and working and

  767. working and working and still no promise of eternal life.

  768. To be able to share with them that Jesus yoke is easy and his

  769. burden is light is something they can't comprehend.

  770. It is something they cannot understand.

  771. So be able to share with them how you can have peace.

  772. Well, I know for certain that I'll go to heaven someday.

  773. To them that's unfathomable. They don't even know how that's

  774. possible. You can show them from the

  775. Bible. That's the case.

  776. All the all the gospel interactions that took place in

  777. the book of Acts. When they were done, people

  778. said, well, I guess I'm a little bit closer to eternal life.

  779. They never said that. They said this, I'm saved.

  780. They came to understand that they knew Jesus Christ the

  781. Savior. I look at the Ethiopian eunuch,

  782. and by the time he was baptized, he didn't say, well, I guess I'm

  783. a little closer to heaven. No, he went away rejoicing and

  784. his life changed forever. Because there's rest that comes

  785. with knowing Jesus Christ as your Savior.

  786. And then #7 listen, don't ever get over this.

  787. Share your testimony when you don't know what to do.

  788. Share your testimony as you're listening and question them.

  789. Find common ground. I have found over the years,

  790. even though I didn't grow up Catholic, I grew up Lutheran.

  791. I've been able to interact with a lot of people who were

  792. Catholics because I found common ground in our stories.

  793. Listen, Catholics believe 7 sacraments, Lutheran's believe

  794. two. Guess what?

  795. There's enough common ground there that I could show we were,

  796. we had altar boys. I was an altar boy when I was a

  797. Luther. Could you imagine me as an altar

  798. boy? How cute would that be, right?

  799. I was a 7th grader wearing the whole get up and a little limp

  800. mustache, but it was pretty bad. So all things considered, but I

  801. understood being an altar boy, I understood I never went through

  802. CCD, but we had confirmation which what it was called.

  803. So I'm able to find those things.

  804. I'm able to talk to someone who was a Catholic or someone who

  805. may be as newly saved, unable to find some common ground and

  806. share my testimony. Listen, do you have much common

  807. ground with a Mormon? No, but do you have some common

  808. ground? Well, yes.

  809. Here's why. If we go all the way back to

  810. lesson 1, which seems like a a while ago, but if we went all

  811. the way back, yeah, I feel you, Ralph.

  812. But if we go all the way back to lesson 1, we saw there's really

  813. only two religions, right? God and not God.

  814. That's it. I mean, that's it.

  815. So guess what? In the time you were not God,

  816. you can find common ground with a Mormon.

  817. You can maybe find, you know, listen, I wasn't a Mormon, but I

  818. was a Catholic that I understood that I just never had peace

  819. because I wasn't sure that I'd ever done enough.

  820. I went to Catholic funerals and they were always telling us to

  821. pray for the dead because know if they had gone to heaven or

  822. not. And so I can empathize a little

  823. bit of what you're saying. Be able some of your testimony,

  824. listen, your testimony is the greatest weapon, if you will,

  825. outside of the word of God that you have.

  826. And if you don't know how to share your faith with somebody,

  827. if you get confused, listen, just share your testimony.

  828. You cannot go wrong saying how you got saved.

  829. It is a wonderful thing and we say it's a weapon.

  830. I don't mean it's a weapon in a offensive sense that on offense,

  831. but the idea is this God has given you this life.

  832. Share that transformation that took place and show them,

  833. listen, I don't know that I can answer everything for you, but

  834. he changed my life and talk about the woman at the well.

  835. She ran away. She left her water pot down and

  836. she didn't say, now let me explain to you the sufficiency

  837. of Christ. Let me explain to you about his

  838. dual nature of being 100% God, 100% man.

  839. She couldn't explain all that. She said this.

  840. Come see a man. He knows all things.

  841. Surely this is the Christ. That's what she says.

  842. Listen, if you can't say anything else, you could say

  843. this. Surely this is the Christ.

  844. He's changed my life and he's changed your life as well.

  845. Thank you for listening to the sermon from the pulpit of
