  1. Welcome to the Liberty Baptist Sermon Archives.

  2. The message you're about to hear was preached at Liberty Baptist

  3. Church in Easton, MA. You can find out more about us

  4. or contact us at my libertybaptist.org or just look

  5. us up on Facebook. And now we hope that this

  6. message from God's word will be a blessing to you.

  7. We're. So glad to have you this morning

  8. for our Sunday school hour. Just a little bit of a

  9. programming note for you. This will be our final session

  10. looking at the world religions and cults for this year.

  11. Next week, Lord willing, we'll be looking at the virgin birth

  12. of Jesus Christ. I like going over that issue

  13. every year or two and why the virgin birth is so important.

  14. I know it'll be after Christmas, but that's OK.

  15. We don't just have to talk about it before Christmas.

  16. But I do think it's good for us to be able to review and

  17. understand why Mary is so important, but yet that she is

  18. also not held to the same regard that the Catholic Church does,

  19. and to be able to look at those differences.

  20. Next Sunday morning, the following Sunday morning, that

  21. will be January 4th, and we'll be having Charles Parker Abbott

  22. junior, who will be giving the message, preaching, teaching,

  23. whatever he will be doing. He'll be speaking the word of

  24. God to us. He'll be in town in a couple

  25. weeks and looking forward to having Chucky with us.

  26. And he'll be giving the Sunday school hour.

  27. After that, we will be returning to the series.

  28. But in the meantime. Looking forward to getting back

  29. into it with you today. And we're asking ourselves this

  30. question, as you could see on our first slide.

  31. How did the Jews receive eternal life?

  32. And I think. Is an important question for us

  33. to look at this morning, to look at it not just from the

  34. perspective of the Jews, but also to look at it from our own

  35. perspective as well. We maybe put it this way from

  36. the perspective of Christianity in general, maybe to dispel some

  37. of the thoughts that is spoken of so primarily through general

  38. Christianity. And by that I mean just the

  39. broad general thought of Christianity, not even

  40. necessarily who we are as Bible believing independent Baptists,

  41. but then also of the Jews themselves and how they look it

  42. themselves and comparing what they say about themselves to the

  43. Bible. Now before we do that, we want

  44. to remind ourselves of the 13 beliefs of which they hold to.

  45. We looked at these last week and we saw first of all, God alone

  46. exists and his creator. God is 1 and unique.

  47. God is incorporeal and incomparable.

  48. God is eternal. Both first and last we're to

  49. pray to God alone and to no other.

  50. The words of the prophets are true.

  51. Moses was the chief prophet and Moses's prophecies are true.

  52. The Torah, The first five books of the the Bible, or a Torah,

  53. the Talmud were given to Moses and divinely preserved.

  54. There will be no other Torah since it cannot be changed.

  55. God knows all things, including the thoughts and deeds of men.

  56. God will reward the righteous and punish the wicked.

  57. The Messiah will come and 13 and finally the dead will be

  58. resurrected. Now you'll hear these mentioned

  59. in the video very close to the end of the lesson this morning.

  60. So I want to review these with you because these are commonly

  61. held by all of the Jewish. Groups and sects that there are

  62. out there. Remember, we saw that there were

  63. several of them. That are out there.

  64. Perhaps the only, I would say The only exception that would be

  65. secular Jews, those who are Jewish in ethnicity and hold to

  66. that and maybe even observe the feast just out of, you know,

  67. solidarity with their. Own ethnicity but yet really do

  68. not hold to the beliefs of Judaism at large.

  69. But in general you will find that these 13 beliefs are held

  70. in common and I will say there's a lot as we mentioned last week

  71. that we do have in common with those 13 beliefs is why we look

  72. at the judeo-christian heritage that we have here in the United

  73. States and sometimes put those together.

  74. But the differences are real and the differences are enough that

  75. well someone believing in that would not be able to spend an

  76. eternity in heaven. Why?

  77. Because they have denied who Jesus Christ is.

  78. The Messiah will not come. The Messiah has already come.

  79. And we saw that God will reward the righteous and punish the

  80. wicked. And technically we do agree with

  81. that. However, the part that's not

  82. mentioned there is that there is none righteous.

  83. No, not one. And we'll see again in the video

  84. at the end the stark differences of which we believe and which

  85. the Jews would hold to in all of those things.

  86. But as the. Jewish practitioners themselves,

  87. we ask ourselves this question today.

  88. What is eternal life to the Jews?

  89. How do they receive eternal life?

  90. There's three things I want us to look at today.

  91. I want you to get your fingers ready this morning.

  92. Do this real quick. And the reason I want you to do

  93. that, you know why we're. Going to be working through our

  94. Bibles. All right, so we're going to be

  95. doing that this morning and getting ourselves ready for

  96. that. So let's look at this.

  97. First of all, number one, are they saved because they're God's

  98. chosen people? Number one, are they saved

  99. because they're God's chosen people?

  100. Now, this is more of a mistake in thinking of Christians more

  101. than Jews themselves. The automatic assumption that

  102. Jews must be saved because they are the chosen people of God.

  103. And as I mentioned last week, and I want to mention again and

  104. make it abundantly clear to all who are in this room and those

  105. who are watching online, those who are listening later, I want

  106. this to be abundantly clear. The Jews were, the Jews are and

  107. the Jews will continue to be God's chosen people.

  108. God has worked through the Jews. God is continuing to work from

  109. the Jews, although they are far from God today, and He will

  110. continue to work through the Jews in the in the future as

  111. they figure very large in the prophecy and into the Book of

  112. Revelation. As we saw last week that it says

  113. in Romans chapter #11 that there will come a time when the Jews

  114. as large in the end of the tribulation period will come to

  115. trust Jesus Christ as their Savior, realizing He was the

  116. Messiah that they had rejected for so long.

  117. Now remember that when we say that they are God's chosen

  118. people, that does not mean they are better than everyone else.

  119. We made this clear last week. They are chosen chosen because

  120. they have been chosen for a particular task, just as I could

  121. take one of my children and choose them for a particular

  122. task. I just saw this morning we had

  123. or experience this morning in our home getting ready.

  124. AJ, you need to take care of the dishes.

  125. He loves loading the dishwasher note and loading the dishwasher.

  126. Let me tell you, he loves that. If you don't get the sarcasm

  127. from what I'm saying right now, then I am not laying it on

  128. thickly enough. He loves I say it's time to

  129. unload and he already says not load, right?

  130. Because he knows that after he unloads he's got to load it back

  131. up. With the stuff in the sink, he's

  132. already bargaining with me before we start.

  133. I've chosen him to do that. Peyton, there were a few dishes

  134. that were left that we can't put in the dishwasher.

  135. And so I asked her, I said when you when AJ is done, will you

  136. wash the things that can't go in the dishwasher and put him in

  137. the drying rack? Now I chose AJ to do something.

  138. I chose Peyton to do something. That does not mean that I love

  139. more, one more or one less. It just means, well, I chose

  140. them to do what they have been prepared to do.

  141. And that's the same with the Jews, that they have been chosen

  142. for a particular task. Now we ask ourselves this

  143. because a lot of what we're looking at this morning is not

  144. just me saying these things, but why does the Bible teach these

  145. things to be true? How do we know that they are

  146. God's chosen people? Well, we learned that in

  147. Deuteronomy Chapter 7. So why don't you go ahead and

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  148. turn to Deuteronomy chapter #7 this morning to be the first

  149. place that we look at Deuteronomy Chapter 7 verse #6

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  150. again. They are chosen not because they

  151. are loved more than anyone else. They are more beloved.

  152. By God, but rather because they have a particular task now, they

  153. are loved by God. There is no doubt of that.

  154. But then again, we all are loved of God.

  155. That's why Jesus Christ died on the cross for.

  156. God So what love the world and we know that to be true a theme

  157. throughout Scripture that it was his love that sent Jesus Christ

  158. to be born as a baby. It was his love that sent Jesus

  159. Christ to the cross. It was his love that caused his

  160. precious blood to flow down from that cross and so that we could

  161. be washed in his blood. Remember, we saw that we were

  162. washed. We are justified.

  163. We are sanctified. We saw that on Wednesday night.

  164. That's. All through the process of which

  165. God has made. But we see in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  166. Chapter 7 Let's. Begin with verse #6 where God is

  167. saying this, For thou art a holy people unto the Lord thy God.

  168. The Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto

  169. himself, above all people that are on the face of the earth.

  170. Now take a brief time out. I don't want to go too far off

  171. the path here for just a second, but I do want to remind you that

  172. it does say in Titus chapter 2 verse 14.

    Titus 2:14

  173. And I know I've said this before, that we are in the New

  174. Testament as believers called to be peculiar people, zealous of

  175. good works. And again, that whole peculiar

  176. thing doesn't mean that you walk around.

  177. Hey, I'm peculiar. All right, it doesn't have to be

  178. like that. And some of us, I know we are

  179. pretty peculiar. I know I can only look at

  180. myself, but it's not just talking about acting strange or

  181. acting funny. It means that we have been

  182. chosen to be different in this world.

  183. We've been chosen to be salt and light.

  184. And so in this New Testament era, we are also chosen people,

  185. you know, not these chosen people.

  186. We have not replaced the Jews. There's some really bad

  187. theology, replacement theology that is out there that would say

  188. that the church has replaced the Jews.

  189. Listen, that is so far from what the Word of God teaches.

  190. Stay away from that type of theology.

  191. It leads to anti-Semitism. It leads to bad decisions about

  192. the end times and bad theology about the end times.

  193. Stay away from that. But we have also been chosen to

  194. be lights for Jesus Christ in this New Testament period of

  195. which we live in. Now getting back to where we

  196. were. Verse #7 The Lord did not set

  197. his love upon you, nor choose you, because you were more in

  198. number than any people, for you were the fewest of all people,

  199. but because the Lord loved you, and because He would keep the

  200. oath which He had sworn unto your Father's.

  201. Had the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeem

  202. you out of the House of bond them for the hand of Pharaoh,

  203. king of Egypt. Know therefore, that the Lord

  204. thy God, He is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and

  205. mercy with them that love him, and keepeth his commandments to

  206. 1000 generations. By the way, with 1000

  207. generations cover the Jews until today.

  208. I would certainly say so. And beyond verse 10 And repayeth

  209. them that hate them to their face, and destroy them.

  210. He will not be slack to him that hateth him.

  211. He will repay him to his face. Thou shalt therefore keep his

  212. commandments, the statutes, the judgments which I command thee

  213. this day to do them. God says I have chosen you.

  214. I have selected you for a very particular task, not because you

  215. were bigger or better than anyone else, because I have laid

  216. my affection upon you to do this, and I'm preparing you to

  217. do this. But he says this.

  218. Obey my commandments, obey what I have told you to do.

  219. And we know that they have been unfaithful by the way.

  220. By and large, they remain unfaithful today.

  221. Remember we saw last week they have stiff armed Jesus Christ

  222. even today. By and large, not every Jew,

  223. we're not talking about them all, every single one of them.

  224. We can't say every single person's that way.

  225. There are Messianic Jews, those who believe in Jesus today.

  226. But by and large the Jews have pushed out and pushed away Jesus

  227. Christ as a heretic, as one who is not from Jehovah.

  228. But we do see this, that although they are not faithful,

  229. God is faithful. It says that right there.

  230. That's a good time for that, Ralph.

  231. All right. Verse #9 Even though they have

  232. not kept their end of the bargain, that God still keeps

  233. His bargain to them, if you want to put it that way.

  234. It says He keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love Him

  235. and keep His commandments to 1000 generations.

  236. And you say, well, they don't love Him today.

  237. And certainly that is true. But we find that still He keeps

  238. His covenant, and He reminds us throughout the Old Testament

  239. that even if you're not faithful, I'll be faithful.

  240. And His love will still be there to those who turn to Him from

  241. the Jews at any given time that He will be there and He's still

  242. going to. When they turn to Him, they will

  243. restore the Kingdom and preserve all that which He said He will

  244. do. Now again, we saw last week,

  245. this does not mean just because they're God's chosen people that

  246. all the Jews are saved. There is a difference when it

  247. comes to salvation. We're not talking about the

  248. redemption of their people by large.

  249. We are talking about the redemption of each individual

  250. soul. Now what did John the Baptist

  251. say about this? What did John the Baptist say

  252. about the Jews being saved just because they're God's chosen

  253. people? Well, you put it this way in

  254. Luke chapter 3, verses 7 through 9.

    Luke 3:7–9

  255. Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized

  256. of him, O generation of Vipers, who hath warned you to flee from

  257. the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits

  258. worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves.

  259. Listen, he says, don't say this. We have Abraham, it's our

  260. father. For I say unto you, that God is

  261. able of these stones to raise up the children unto Abraham.

  262. And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees.

  263. Every tree, therefore, which bringeth not forth good fruit is

  264. hewn down and cast in the fire. John the Baptist says, don't

  265. think that you are redeemed simply because you are a Jew.

  266. Don't think you're redeemed simply because you are the sons

  267. and daughters of Abraham. He says the preaching that is

  268. being laid out to you now is laying the axe to the root of

  269. the tree. We're getting to the heart of

  270. the matter. You need to be saved and the way

  271. that you are living your life lends you to be more like a

  272. generation of Vipers than a generation who has been redeemed

  273. by the Messiah. Jesus put it this way in Matthew

    Matthew 15:24

  274. 15 verse 24. But he answered and said, I am

  275. not sent unto the lost sheep. Of the let.

  276. Me try that again, I'm sorry, but he answered and said I am

  277. not sent but unto the lost sheep of the House of Israel.

  278. And he's speaking about this in his earthly ministry.

  279. Who was he primarily trying to reach the Jews.

  280. It's not that he, he had no care for the Gentiles.

  281. We see that he healed A Syrophoenician woman.

  282. She certainly would have been a Gentile.

  283. We see as care for the people of Samaria.

  284. They were half Jews. But we also understand that he,

  285. his ministry was focused on the lost House of Israel.

  286. Well, why were they lost? Well, because they did not

  287. accept him by and large as their savior.

  288. He knew they needed to be redeemed, even though they were

  289. God's chosen people. Well, what's the ramifications

  290. of that? Go to Romans chapter. 10 Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  291. chapter 10. You'll recognize some of these

  292. verses. Romans 10 verse #9 I'd encourage

  293. you write some of these verses down and look at them later.

  294. I know that we go over them very quickly, but if you can write

  295. them down and look at them and study these out for yourself.

  296. Romans 10 verse 9 says this, Well you probably are familiar

    Romans 10:9

  297. with this, that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord

  298. Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart, that God hath

  299. raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

  300. For with the heart man believeth in the righteousness, and with

  301. the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

  302. For the Scripture sayeth, Whoever believeth, whosoever

  303. believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

  304. Listen, for there is no difference between the Jew and

  305. the Greek. For the same Lord over all is

  306. rich unto all that call upon him.

  307. And verse 13 we're also familiar with, for whosoever shall call

  308. upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  309. So what is made abundantly clear here?

  310. This is the plan of salvation for the Jew and the Gentile.

  311. This is the way of salvation, to call upon the name of the Lord,

  312. to trust in the Lord Jesus. This is where salvation lies.

  313. It is not due to a national identity of which the Jews carry

  314. because they have been God's chosen people from the time of

  315. Abraham, confirmed in the Law of Moses, and then carried on from

  316. that time all the way until the very end times and beyond.

  317. We find that this is what God's plan is.

  318. But yet they still need to be saved the Bible way.

  319. And we'll actually look into more of that here in just a

  320. moment. So number one, are they saved

  321. because they're God's chosen people?

  322. And the answer to that is no, they are not simply saved

  323. because they are God's chosen people.

  324. But we ask ourselves number 2, are they saved because they

  325. believe in Jehovah? Are they saved because they

  326. believe in Jehovah? Now, this is a difficult

  327. question for some because listen, for us to study Judaism

  328. as we have is different from other world religions.

  329. It's easy to look at the Muslims and say, listen, they believe in

  330. Allah and we believe in Jehovah God.

  331. And so we are not alike. They are a false religion.

  332. That's fairly simple for us to say.

  333. We can look at Buddhism, can't we?

  334. And we can consider that Buddha is in the grave, he is dead, has

  335. decayed and has not resurrected. We say, listen, we're different

  336. from the Buddhists, aren't we? That they worship Buddha and

  337. that we worship Jehovah God. And so it's easy for us to say

  338. there is a difference. However, for those who practice

  339. Judaism, listen, they will tell you that they believe in Jehovah

  340. and well, we believe in Jehovah too.

  341. And so there can cause some confusion, can't it, for us to

  342. be able to consider these things because it would seem like you

  343. have the great similarity of having the same God.

  344. But listen, the main issue with this is that Judaism doesn't

  345. truly believe in Jehovah because they don't believe in Jesus.

  346. I'm going to run that by you one more time.

  347. Although they give lip service to the fact that they believe in

  348. Jehovah, they do not believe in Jehovah because they do not

  349. believe in Jesus. Jehovah is the triune Godfather,

  350. Son, and Holy Ghost. The way we can really separate

  351. this and understand this would be to maybe go back in our minds

  352. to even look at the Jehovah Witnesses and the Mormons.

  353. If I was to go up to a Jehovah Witness witness and say, do you

  354. believe in Jesus? What would they say?

  355. Yes. If I was to go to a Mormon and

  356. ask them, do you believe in Jesus?

  357. What will they say? Yes, but we have to ask the

  358. Jehovah Witness, well, what do you believe of Jesus?

  359. And then we find, well, they don't believe that it's Jesus.

  360. We asked the Mormon, what do you believe of Jesus?

  361. And we find they don't really believe in Jesus.

  362. And so we would ask the Jew. We would ask them the practicing

  363. Jew, we would ask them, what do you believe of Jehovah?

  364. And we will find that their answer will be lack, because

  365. they do not believe that Jehovah is a triune Godfather, Son, and

  366. Holy Ghost. faith in God must include faith in his Son,

  367. because God has made Christ the exclusive mediator of salvation.

  368. There is no other name by which men can be saved.

  369. Acts 412 And listen, you can't say that you have regard for the

  370. Father and then have hatred for the Son and believe that you're

  371. saved. That's just not Bible.

  372. We understand this, practically speaking, in our own lives.

  373. I can't imagine someone coming to me and say, you know what?

  374. I really like you, but I hate your wife and I hate your kids

  375. and me saying something like this.

  376. Hey, well, as long as you like me, it's OK.

  377. I'll tell you this. You got a problem with my wife.

  378. You got a problem with me 22 years yesterday.

  379. You know what I'm saying? You got a problem with Diane,

  380. You got a problem with me, you say is that you're throwing down

  381. the gauntlet? No, I actually don't really

  382. remember having a conversation with anybody like that because

  383. most people like her better than me, all things considered.

  384. But. I will say that.

  385. You know, if, if you if you don't regard her, well, then you

  386. don't have much regard for me because we're one flesh.

  387. And if someone says, you know, I really like you and I like your

  388. wife, but your kids. Now listen, I'm not saying that

  389. our kids are perfect because nobody's kids are perfect.

  390. There have been times people have come and said something

  391. about our children. I've had to say, well, not only

  392. you're right about that, but there's a lot more that you

  393. don't know that if you didn't know, you'd be right about that

  394. too. I'm not saying that.

  395. What I'm just saying is you can't have withheld affection

  396. for my children but yet have affection for me and truly say

  397. that you love me because you don't, because we kind of come.

  398. Can we put it this way as a package deal?

  399. Could I put it this way, just put it down to the bottom shelf

  400. so that we can all grab it this morning?

  401. When it comes to Jehovah, Jehovah and Jesus are a package

  402. deal. And you can't say that you

  403. believe in Jehovah without believing in who Jesus Christ

  404. is. You say, well, that I mean, who

  405. are you to say that, pastor? I mean, who are you to lay down

  406. the gauntlet in that way? And the answer is I wasn't the

  407. one who laid that down. Here's who did Jesus, Jesus

  408. himself was the one who said, you don't believe in me, then

  409. you don't rightly believe in the Father.

  410. And the book of John records this back and forth so many

  411. times. We're going to read just a

  412. couple of those places. So first go to John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  413. All right, John chapter 5 verse #19 John chapter 5 verse #19

John 5 chapter mention John 5 chapter mention

  414. we'll start there. And the Bible says, this, This

  415. is Jesus, you'll see, says, Then answered Jesus, and said unto

  416. them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of

  417. himself but what he seeth the Father do.

  418. For what things so ever He do it, these also do it the Son

  419. likewise. For the Father loveth the Son,

  420. and showeth Him all things that Himself doeth, and He will show

  421. him greater works than these that he may marvel.

  422. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them, Even

  423. so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

  424. For the Father judgeth no man, and but hath committed all

  425. judgment unto the Son, that all men should honor the Son, even

  426. as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son

  427. honoreth not the Father which hath sent Him.

  428. That seems pretty clear to me. Right?

  429. Right there does it. It says that we are to honor the

  430. Son, or men should honor the Son even as they honor the Father.

  431. Listen, how is the Father honored?

  432. It's only by worship. It's only by worshiping him as

  433. God. So what is Jesus saying?

  434. Basically saying this, you honor the Father is God, but you honor

  435. the Son is God as well. Now the Jews didn't like that.

  436. They didn't appreciate this type of talk.

  437. Drop down to verse #39 it says this.

  438. He tells those Jews who think that they know the Scriptures so

  439. they know more about Jehovah than Jesus.

  440. And he says this search the scriptures for in them you think

  441. you have eternal life and they are they which testify me.

  442. He says, listen, if you're not sure about what I'm saying, go

  443. back and read your own scriptures.

  444. Could I maybe put it to you this way this morning?

  445. Go back and read the Torah. Go back because if you read the

  446. Torah, it speaks of me. What do we say to the Jews

  447. today? We say go back and look at your

  448. Torah. No, no, don't worry about the

  449. Talmud. That's not the Scriptures.

  450. Go back to the Torah. What does the Torah say?

  451. What does the Old Testament say? What are the first five books

  452. say? They tell you who Jesus Christ

  453. is, and yet they deny it. He continues and said, and he

  454. will not come to me, that they might have life.

  455. I receive not honor from them, but I know you, that you have

  456. not the love of God in you. I am come in in my Father's

  457. name, and ye receive me not. If another shall come in His own

  458. name, Him ye will receive. How can ye believe which

  459. receive? Honor one of another, and seek

  460. not the honor that cometh from God.

  461. Only do not think that I will accuse you to the Father.

  462. There is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom he trusts.

  463. For if he believed in Moses, ye would have believed me, for he

  464. wrote of me. But if ye believe not his

  465. writings, how shall ye believe my words?

  466. And so Jesus consistently says, You Revere Moses, go back to

  467. Moses. You Revere scriptures, go back

  468. to the Scriptures. Don't say you believe in the

  469. Father without believing in me, because as we see, I and my

  470. Father are one. This is what Jesus says.

  471. Get something. Me laying the gauntlet about who

  472. Jehovah is. This is Jesus Christ who does

  473. it. Now go to John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  474. Quickly turn to John chapter 8. Look at verse #42 A little bit

    John 8 chapter mention

  475. of a longer section of Scripture here, but I want you to see

  476. these for yourself. It's all right.

  477. To read a lot of scriptures in Sunday school all right to read

  478. law scriptures in church. I mean, if you're not going to

  479. read the Bible in church, I don't know where you can Amen.

  480. So John chapter 8, verse 42 and I think it's.

    John 8:42

  481. Important for us to read these because a lot of what I'm saying

  482. this morning you already understand.

  483. I would imagine there's nothing that I'm saying this morning

  484. that's surprising to you. However, you may not know where

  485. in the Bible to articulate these things because we don't know

  486. where they are. I'd rather you get to them, see

  487. them, write them down, maybe underline some things in your

  488. Bibles. This is what I want us to do

  489. this morning. So John chapter 8, look at verse

    John 8 chapter mention

  490. #42 it says this. Jesus said unto them, if God

  491. were your Father, he would love me.

  492. For I proceeded forth and came from God.

  493. Neither came I of myself, but He sent me.

  494. Why do you not understand my speech?

  495. Even because ye cannot hear my word.

  496. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye

  497. will do. He was a murderer from the

  498. beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth

  499. in him. When he speaketh a lie, he

  500. speaketh of his own, for he is a liar and the Father.

  501. Of it and. And because I tell you the

  502. truth, you believe me not? Which of you convince it me of

  503. sin? And if I say the truth, why do

  504. you not believe me? He that is of God heareth God's

  505. words. You therefore hear them not,

  506. because you are not of God. Then answered the Jews, and said

  507. unto him, Say We not well, that thou art a Samaritan, and has

  508. the devil. If you don't realize how low

  509. regard they had for Samaritans, that ought to tell you a little

  510. bit right there. And they said this Jesus said, I

  511. have not a devil, but I honor my Father, and you do dishonor me,

  512. for I seek not my own glory. There is one that seeketh and

  513. judgeth. Verily, verily, I say unto you,

  514. If any, or if a man keep my saying, he shall never see

  515. death. And the Jews said unto him, Now

  516. we know that thou hast the devil, Abraham is dead, and the

  517. prophets. And thou sayest, If a man keep

  518. my saying, he shall never taste of death.

  519. Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead, and the

  520. prophets are dead, who make us thou thyself?

  521. Jesus answered, If I honor myself, my honor is nothing.

  522. It is my father that honor with me, of whom you say that he is

  523. your God, yet you have not known him.

  524. Look at this, you have not known him, but I know him, and if I

  525. should say I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you,

  526. but I know him. I keep a saying, Your father

  527. Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it and was glad.

  528. The Jews said unto him, Thou art not yet 50 years old, and hast

  529. thou seen Abraham? And Jesus said unto them,

  530. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

  531. Now he does two things here. He talks about his eternality,

  532. because he's saying that he pre existed before Abraham.

  533. Well, the only way he could do that is if he eternal.

  534. We know he wasn't just simply saying, well, I'm about 2000

  535. years old. He wasn't saying that.

  536. He's saying that he was eternal. But he also used those two

  537. powerful words at the end. What were those two last words?

  538. I am. And the Jews know exactly what

  539. He meant when He said I am, just as the Jews understood when they

  540. asked if He is Jesus Christ in the garden.

  541. And he said, I am. And they all fell backwards, the

  542. power of who He was. They understood exactly what He

  543. meant with this. And we know this because verse

  544. 59 confirms this. They took up stones to cast in

  545. Him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, going

  546. through the midst of them, and so passed by.

  547. And So what do we see? We see that Jesus says this, If

  548. you believe in Jehovah, you have to believe in me.

  549. So the Jews can't rightly say that they believe Jehovah, but

  550. then not lay claim to Jesus Christ, because again, I am my

  551. Father or one. First John chapter 2, verses 23

    1 John 2:23–25

  552. through 25 confirm this. Whosoever denieth the Son, the

  553. same hath not the Father, but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath

  554. the Father also. Let that therefore abide in you

  555. which he have heard from the beginning.

  556. If that which he have heard from the beginning shall remain in

  557. you, he shall continue in the Son and in the Father.

  558. And this is the promise that he promised us.

  559. Even eternal life, eternal life is through Father and Son.

  560. Eternal life is understanding that we do not just believe in a

  561. God, but that God is composed of Jesus Christ, Father, Son, and

  562. Holy Ghost. And so we look at #2 are they

  563. saved because they believe in Jehovah?

  564. And we would take that and categorically deny it because

  565. they truly do not believe in Jehovah, just as a Jehovah

  566. Witness or a moment truly don't believe in Jesus.

  567. Because when we get down to the definition of it, we realize

  568. we're really not talking about the same thing at all.

  569. Which brings us to our third question here today.

  570. And this is perhaps the most important because it's the most

  571. relevant to what the Jews believe of themselves.

  572. Are they saved by their works? We ask ourselves this question

  573. and they ask of themselves, are they saved by their works?

  574. Now, we're going to show a video here in just a moment of a

  575. conservative commentator. Last week, we saw a very brief

  576. video from Ben Shapiro. This week we'll be looking.

  577. At a brief video by another Jewish conservative commentator.

  578. His name is Dennis Prager. You might be familiar with him

  579. as he. Speaks of the differences

  580. between Christianity and Judaism.

  581. And once you listen very carefully, particularly of his

  582. reference to the 13 beliefs that we saw at the beginning of our

  583. lesson, but then also at how he believes eternal life is

  584. achieved by Jewish believers. So if we could, let's roll that

  585. footage. The biggest difference between

  586. Judaism and Christianity is not the The Who is Jesus, but

  587. obviously it's a difference. But that's not the biggest

  588. difference. The biggest difference I think

  589. is with regard to attaining salvation, if that, if that

  590. means the afterlife, heaven, whatever term you wish to use

  591. for for Christians, Although Catholics and Protestants don't

  592. fully agree on this matter because Catholics do not believe

  593. faith alone can save you, whereas Protestantism does.

  594. Luther said that Catholics believe that the sacraments are

  595. also necessary. So there's faith and works in

  596. Catholicism and there's faith alone.

  597. Since Luther who founded Protestantism for Judaism it is

  598. works you which I'll use the term that really blows my

  599. Christian friends mind you earn salvation Korean end of issue.

  600. How you act determines whether you go to heaven or yes, Jews do

  601. believe. Excuse me Jews don't Judaism

  602. does Jews and Judaism differ a lot.

  603. The the one of the 13 principles of the Jewish faith as compiled

  604. by Maimonides, the greatest Jewish thinker whoever lived

  605. according to nearly all Jews. One of them, one of the 13

  606. principles, is that God rewards the good and punishes the bad.

  607. And the exact same faith is for good Jews and good non Jews and

  608. bad Jews and bad non Jews. Judaism holds that God judges

  609. people by their behavior, not by their theology, their beliefs,

  610. their faith. So when I had this discussion

  611. with a with four Christians just this past week long dinner, one

  612. of them was a pastor and I, when I mentioned that we have to

  613. strive to be good and that God rewards the good and punishes

  614. the bad. So he said, well, what is the

  615. definition of good? So I asked the pastor, what do

  616. you mean by what is good? You know what good is.

  617. Everybody knows what good is. Did you, if somebody said

  618. someone's a good lawyer or a good pitcher or a good

  619. violinist, would you ask what does good mean?

  620. No, you would know exactly what it means.

  621. Same with a human being. Now, is it good enough?

  622. I think that's what he meant to attain salvation, to use a

  623. Christian term, or go to heaven, get rewarded in the afterlife.

  624. That's for God to determine. I don't claim that I know what

  625. is good enough. That's God's determination.

  626. That's true. So then for the Christian, the

  627. question would arise, well, then you're, you don't have any

  628. assurance that you'll go to heaven, to which I would say

  629. that's true. I don't have an assurance.

  630. I think if God judges justly, I think I have lived a life that

  631. has merited reward, but ultimately that is for God to

  632. judge. That's true.

  633. So there's a Jewish Christian difference.

  634. I always speak of today a Christian values because our

  635. values are so similar, but our theologies are different, which

  636. doesn't bother me in the least, by the way.

  637. That's fine. I have a lot to learn from

  638. Christians and I hope they have a lot to learn from me.

  639. There's a lot of that that's pretty sorrowful when you think

  640. of, and I say sorrowful for those who would believe that

  641. line of theology. And, and really a lot of it came

  642. down to this. You know what good is?

  643. Did you catch that? Well, you know what good is?

  644. And the answer is, well, mankind doesn't know what good is unless

  645. there is a code. It tells us what is good and

  646. what is not, because what some think is good, others do not

  647. think is good. We saw last week that there was

  648. someone in the name of good in their religion went to Bondi

  649. Beach and decided to be able to shoot 15 different people.

  650. Shot a lot more than 15 people, but that 15 people perished on

  651. that day and they thought they were doing such as good in the

  652. name of their God. We would say no, that's not good

  653. at all whatsoever. There would be others who would

  654. say that. Very heinous crimes and very

  655. awful ways of talking or acting would be good things to do in

  656. their own mind because of their own twisted value system.

  657. Could you imagine a judge here in the United States of America

  658. not having any type of code of laws whatsoever, just that judge

  659. was supposed to determine as two people came to him, well, what's

  660. good and what's not? Well, you know what's good,

  661. right? And the answer is no, of course

  662. not. There's nuances and there's

  663. differences, and that's why there has to be a code of laws

  664. of ethics that's in place. And how much more so is that

  665. true of God, that God has given us His word to tell us what's

  666. good and what's not? And here's another major issue

  667. with that. When we look at God's Word and

  668. we see the laws of which is there, we don't see ourselves as

  669. good. What do we see ourselves as?

  670. Bad. We see ourselves as sinners.

  671. That's what we understand that the law does not exonerate us.

  672. The law actually finds US guilty, that all of us are

  673. guilty before God. And so as we look at God's laws,

  674. we don't find that, well, there is perhaps a possibility for

  675. reward. We see that, well, there is no

  676. possibility of reward without redemption.

  677. And so that's what we find here. And it's so sad to be able to

  678. hear that and hear someone to say, well, I think that my life

  679. has merited favor. Well, my question is, well, if

  680. you know what's good and what's bad, then you ought to know that

  681. you have salvation. You ought to know that you

  682. achieve eternal life. But even a man such as Dennis

  683. Prager would have to say no, I have no assurance of that

  684. whatsoever. But we realize that the.

  685. Bible tells us we can. Have assurance of where we'll

  686. spend eternity that we can know that where we'll spend an

  687. eternity in heaven. I will say one of his arguments

  688. that he made at the beginning is the understanding of the

  689. difference between Catholic theology and what do you call

  690. Protestant theology. I would call biblical theology

  691. because even many Protestants don't believe what he said.

  692. But the idea that work, salvation is sometimes found in

  693. Christian circles. And the answer is that it is

  694. found in Christian circles. But that's why we try to

  695. differentiate as we're teaching what biblical Christianity is.

  696. The Bible teaches that we do not trust in our own works

  697. whatsoever. What do we trust in the finished

  698. work of Jesus Christ on the cross?

  699. That's where salvation is. Now, what does the Bible say

  700. about this? We have a few more moments.

  701. What does the Bible say about this?

  702. Hebrews 911 through 4. 14 But Christ being come and high

  703. priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect

  704. Tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not this

  705. building, neither by the blood of goats or calves, but by His

  706. own blood He entered into once in the holy place, having

  707. obtained eternal redemption for us.

  708. For if the blood of bulls and. Goats and the.

  709. Ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the

  710. purifying of the flesh. How much more shall the body of

  711. Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without

  712. spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to

  713. serve the living God? Purge from what?

  714. Dead works, works that can't save you, works that don't have

  715. the ability to bring life, but rather works that in and of

  716. ourselves only bring death. Turn to Galatians chapter 3 very

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  717. quickly. Galatians chapter.

  718. Three, we're almost done. Galatians chapter 3, listen very

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  719. well this morning and we'll take a break and get ready for

  720. service. All right, Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  721. look at verse #21. Galatians 321 says, Is the law

  722. then against the promises of God?

  723. Well, is the law bad? Is the law wrong?

  724. Well, God forbid it says, For if there had been a law given which

  725. could have given life, verily righteousness should have been

  726. by the law. If the law could give life, God

  727. would have done that. But that's not what the law is

  728. for. But the Scripture hath

  729. concluded, Listen all under sin. Why, that the promise by faith

  730. of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

  731. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up

  732. under the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

  733. Wherefore the law? We've said this before.

  734. It was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be

  735. justified by what faith. But after that faith has come,

  736. we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

  737. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

  738. Now look at this. For as many of you as have been

  739. baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

  740. There is neither what Jew nor Greek.

  741. There is neither bond nor free. There is neither male nor

  742. female. For ye are all one in Jesus

  743. Christ. And if ye be Christ, then ye be

  744. Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise meaning

  745. this, if you belong to Christ, then you are with all of those

  746. together, whether they are Jew or Gentile, bond or free, male

  747. or female, that we all belong. We are all one in Jesus Christ.

  748. The Real issue of mankind, as we'll see this morning in the

  749. morning service that has divided mankind is really this.

  750. What do you think of Christ? That is the real issue that has

  751. divided mankind through the ages.

  752. And so are we believing that works could save someone?

  753. The answer is no. To say that you're saved by your

  754. works is really a gross misreading of the Old Testament.

  755. Do you think Lot would have been saved by works?

  756. Consider Lot. We see him as a pretty sad state

  757. of affairs, don't we? But yet second Peter chapter 2

    2 Peter 2:7

  758. verse 7 says that he was a saved man.

  759. It calls him just Lot. In fact, I preached on that few

  760. years ago that he was just Lot, that he was saved.

  761. But that was about all it all he was in his life, he was just, he

  762. was just Lot. But it does say he was justified

  763. before the Lord. I don't know that I understand

  764. all of it other than the fact that's what the Bible says.

  765. What about David, he did some pretty bad things didn't he?

  766. What about Samson, he did some pretty bad things, didn't he?

  767. But yet we see David and Samson named in Hebrews Chapter 11 in

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  768. the Hall of Faith. Why?

  769. Because they were looking forward to Messiah, they were

  770. looking forward by faith, that which they could not see, but

  771. yet they believed Him. Salvation in the Old Testament

  772. and the New Testament has always been about the Messiah.

  773. In the Old Testament they look forward to him.

  774. Here in the New Testament we look back toward Him.

  775. Hebrews 11 verses 39 and 40. And these all, having obtained a

    Hebrews 11:39

  776. good report through faith, receive not the promise.

  777. God having provided some better thing for us, that they without

  778. us should not be made perfect. Listen, these 3 truths have

  779. never Salvation always rests on Christ's work that has never

  780. changed. Salvation always requires faith

  781. that never changes. The content of faith became

  782. clearer after Christ came, meaning this Old Testament

  783. believers did not know the details of Christ's life and

  784. death, but yet they promised God's.

  785. They trusted God's promise of a Redeemer, which is the same

  786. Messiah revealed in the New Testament.

  787. That's what Hebrews 11 is all about.

  788. So ask ourselves this question just for a couple couple more

  789. minutes and let's tie this up together to be done in the end.

  790. How are the Jews saved? Remember we saw.

  791. How do they receive eternal life?

  792. Well, the answer is they don't think they need saving.

  793. This is what it comes down to. They don't think they need

  794. saving in the way that we would use the term salvation.

  795. They believe nationally they need deliverance.

  796. They believe naturally they need deliverance, but they also are

  797. looking personally for eternal reward in peace.

  798. That's what they look at. They come from the fundamentally

  799. different thought process that they are good and must do good

  800. things, and we come from the process where the Bible says the

  801. heart is evil and desperately wicked.

  802. Who can know it that our righteousnesses are like filthy

  803. rags and we need salvation that only Jesus Christ can provide.

  804. We're talking about two completely different thought

  805. processes. Jews generally do not conceive

  806. of salvation as atonement through a sacrificial Messiah,

  807. but rather as being in a right relationship with God, living

  808. faithfully under the covenant, and participating in God's

  809. promises. Yet God's Word makes clear they

  810. need to be saved. I leave you with these verses

  811. Romans 116 and 17. For I am not ashamed of the

  812. gospel of Christ. For to the power of salvation

  813. unto the power of God, unto salvation to everyone that

  814. believeth. Listen to the Jew first, and

  815. also to the Greek or the Gentile, for therein is the

  816. righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith.

  817. The just shall live by faith. What's the plan for the Gentile?

  818. The just shall live by faith. What's the plan for the Jew?

  819. The just shall live by faith. Thank you for listening to the

  820. sermon from the pulpit of Liberty Baptist Church.
