  1. 2 Corinthians chapter 2, verse 12 is where we

    2 Corinthians 2:12

  2. will start. Paul had started the letter talking

  3. about some disciplinary issues, but also some

  4. restoration that was to come from that. Once

  5. the discipline was dealt with, the community

  6. needed to love the one that had sinned in whatever

  7. way it was. We don't have a lot of details, but

  8. Paul does emphasize the need for love and grace.

  9. And so after kind of a harsh letter in 1 Corinthians

  10. and a little rough start there in 2 Corinthians,

  11. he's defending himself and trying to get the

  12. people of Corinth to do better. He's shifting

  13. gears a little bit here tonight in the verses

  14. that we're going to look at. So we will pray

  15. and then we will read through them. God, we come

  16. to you. We thank you for giving us the freedom

  17. to come tonight and be in your word. I thank

  18. you for the small group that's here, dear Lord,

  19. even though we're few in number. We thank you

  20. for being good to us and pray that you help us

  21. to be safe in this storm. I pray that you would

  22. help us to... See this Word tonight and examine

  23. our own lives to see if we're being a good example

  24. to you in the world, if the world likes to see

  25. us coming, dear Lord, if the world can tell that

  26. we are yours by our actions and the way that

  27. we live. And I pray, dear Lord, that we would

  28. be more like Paul and those who were with him

  29. that we see in this Scripture tonight. So I pray

  30. that your Holy Spirit will be with us, and I

  31. ask these things in Jesus' name. Amen. All right.

  34. chapter 2 verse 12. Page 995 if you're using

  35. the pew bottle. Alright, it says this. This is

  36. Paul talking here, of course. When I came to

  37. Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, the Lord

  38. opened a door for me. I had no rest in my spirit

  39. because I did not find my brother Titus. But

  40. I said goodbye to them and left for Macedonia.

  41. Now, this little section here doesn't really

  42. give us a lot of detail. We know that Paul went

  43. to Troas and... preached. We know that it seems

  44. that they were receptive. God gave him an open

  45. door there. He gave him an opportunity to preach.

  46. It doesn't sound as though he was there too long.

  47. Maybe he was. We just really don't know. We do

  48. see this interesting fact that he said he had

  49. no rest in his spirit because he did not find

  50. his brother Titus. Obviously, he was expecting

  51. to find Titus there, expecting to get word from

  52. Titus, some communication or interaction with

  53. Titus. This would be the same Titus we see in

  54. the book of Titus. And for whatever reason, he

  55. did not see Titus there, and he wasn't happy

  56. about that. That was a difficult thing for him.

  57. So it doesn't appear as though he was there too

  58. long. Even though it was a good stop for him,

  59. he eventually left and went on his way. We don't

  60. have too much information in those two verses.

  61. We can't speculate too much, but those are the

  62. details that he gave us. So we will move on to

  63. the end of the chapter, which is a little more

  64. applicable to us maybe. Verse 14. But thanks

  65. be to God who always puts us on display in Christ

  66. and through us spreads the aroma of the knowledge

  67. of him in every place. For to God we are the

  68. fragrance of Christ among those who are being

  69. saved and among those who are perishing. To some

  70. we are an aroma of death leading to death, but

  71. to others an aroma of life leading to life. And

  72. who is competent for this? For we are not like

  73. the many who market God's message for a profit.

  74. On the contrary, we speak with sincerity in Christ

  75. as from God and before God. So he starts off

  76. with a word of thanks here in verse 14. He thanks

  77. be to God, and he says, who always puts us on

  78. display, or some of your translations may say

  79. something like causes us to triumph, something

  80. along those lines, that God is always with them,

  81. that wherever they go, that God is blessing them,

  82. that God is giving them the words to say, that

  83. the Holy Spirit is working through them, that

  84. they are doing the work of Jesus Christ. Making

  85. a difference. But he uses an interesting way

  86. to describe their effectiveness that God has

  87. given them in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  88. He says, he puts us on display or causes us to

  89. triumph in Christ and through us spreads the

  90. aroma of the knowledge of him in every place.

  91. For we are the fragrance of Christ among those

  92. who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

  93. So he says we are the fragrance of Christ. Now

  94. that's an interesting way to put it. That is

  95. to say that they are something that smells good

  96. and is pleasing. And that everyone can tell who

  97. they belong to by their smell, so to speak. Now

  98. I don't know what kind of smell they had. He's

  99. obviously using symbolic language here. He's

  100. not talking about some perfume that they wore.

  101. But we understand what it means to have a pleasant

  102. aroma. Everybody wants to smell something pleasant.

  103. Nobody wants to smell anything that's not pleasant.

  104. And so when Paul showed up onto the scene and

  105. those who were with him, it was like a pleasant

  106. aroma coming into the room. Now, Monday, Michelle

  107. had us cleaning house all day, and she had this

  108. concoction. I don't even know what it was on

  109. the stove. It was like lemons and... probably

  110. some kind of essential oils, and looked like

  111. rosemary, and this whole little concoction. But

  112. it made a pleasing aroma, and we enjoy a pleasing

  113. aroma. Everybody enjoys a pleasing aroma. I don't

  114. know if any of you in here have ever heard of

  115. a durian fruit or not. They grow in Southeast

  116. Asia. They're native to Southeast Asia. But they're

  117. quite interesting, supposedly. Now, I've never

  118. seen one. I've only read about them and watched

  119. videos about them. But the unique thing about

  120. the durian fruit is some people think it smells

  121. really good. Other people think it smells like

  122. rotten onions and garlic. And so it's the same

  123. fruit. but depending on the person that's smelling

  124. it it may be very pleasing to them or it may

  125. make them nauseous it's a strange thing and some

  126. people cut it open and eat it and say it's good

  127. other people just can't hardly stand the smell

  128. of it in fact in some places it's banned you

  129. can't transport it on a train or you can't transport

  130. it in closed areas around a lot of people because

  131. of the smell it's used a lot in a lot of different

  132. foods in asia But everybody's taste buds or smell

  133. buds, whatever you call them, are a little different.

  134. And so to some it's pleasing and to some it's

  135. not pleasing. And that's exactly what Paul says

  136. here. We come and we're doing the work of God

  137. and he is with us and we are triumphant and we

  138. are effective in what we are doing. And some

  139. people come and they smell the pleasing aroma

  140. that we are putting off. They hear the words

  141. that we are preaching and teaching and it brings

  142. joy to them. It is pleasing to them. And other

  143. people hear the same words and they hate what

  144. they hear. They don't want to hear the truth.

  145. They don't want to hear the truth of the gospel.

  146. They don't want to hear the truth about God.

  147. And so some, it's an aroma of death leading to

  148. death, Paul says. That is, some people hear the

  149. news, and it just hardens their heart that much

  150. more. They just hate God that much more. They

  151. just get that much angrier, and it doesn't sound

  152. like good news to them. For whatever reason,

  153. they hear the gospel, and they don't accept it.

  154. But others hear the gospel. and it's an aroma

  155. of life leading to life. That some, boy, when

  156. they come into the room, it's refreshing. They

  157. hear what Paul is having to say, and they say,

  158. wait a minute, I want to hear more about that.

  159. And they hear about being a sinner and they hear

  160. about the words of God and the commands of God.

  161. And they hear about the love of Jesus Christ

  162. and the grace of Jesus Christ. And they say,

  163. wait a minute, I need that in my life. And they

  164. want more and more and more of what Paul is trying

  165. to teach them. And so as Paul and those who are

  166. with him are making their rounds through all

  167. these places. Paul says that we are the fragrance

  168. of Jesus Christ. That people know who we are,

  169. but they smell us coming. The question that we

  170. might want to ask ourselves tonight is, when

  171. we are around people, do they smell the fragrance

  172. of Jesus Christ? What do people smell on us when

  173. we get around them? We all love a good smell.

  174. We all love a good fragrance. But as Christians,

  175. are we putting off a good fragrance? Now, one

  176. of the worst things that could possibly happen,

  177. and sometimes we may be guilty of this, is you

  178. don't want to be around somebody that's putting

  179. off some B .O. That's a bad situation. That's

  180. a bad kind of sin, a bad fragrance to be putting

  181. off. We don't want to do that. In a physical

  182. sense, what do we do? We try to make sure we

  183. don't do that. You ever walk by somebody and

  184. you're in a crowd and you're thinking, is that

  185. me? And you check yourself because you're not

  186. sure if it's you or not. You don't want it to

  187. be you because you don't want to be putting off

  188. that smell. So you make sure that you put on

  189. a little deodorant. You make sure that you put

  190. on an extra little puff of perfume or cologne

  191. because you don't want to be one who's putting

  192. off a bad smell. And we should be the same way

  193. in our spiritual walk and our walk with God and

  194. the way that we interact with people. When people

  195. see us coming, do we have a stench about us?

  196. I'm not talking about our physical stench. I'm

  197. talking about our attitudes and our actions and

  198. the way that we treat other people. Are people

  199. glad to see us coming or do they keep their distance?

  200. Because you get somebody that breath stinks or

  201. got some BO, you're talking to them, you might

  202. kind of get a little extra space there. You don't

  203. want to be close to them. And it's the same way

  204. for our attitudes and our actions. If we are

  205. just people that are just miserable and negative

  206. and angry and mean and just hateful all the time,

  207. well, that's not a Christlike attitude. Maybe

  208. we say we're a Christian. Maybe we are. But if

  209. we are and we're acting that way, then we need

  210. to check ourselves because we're not being the

  211. fragrance, the pleasing aroma that God wants

  212. us to be. Now that's not to say that even if

  213. we are doing the work of God and living a life

  214. in a way that's properly representing Jesus Christ,

  215. that's not to say that everybody's going to be

  216. glad to see us coming. Even when we're putting

  217. off the most pleasing aroma by our actions and

  218. reflecting who Jesus is through our actions and

  219. through our love, just like it was with Paul,

  220. there are going to be some that don't want to

  221. hear that truth. But we can't control what other

  222. people do. We can only control what we do. So

  223. what about us today? How are we smelling spiritually?

  224. Are we putting off a pleasing aroma for the kingdom

  225. of God? Are we those that when we encounter people

  226. that people leave from seeing us saying, man,

  227. there's something about him or there's something

  228. about her. There's a pleasantness to them. There's

  229. a pleasant odor, so to speak. A pleasant... fragrance,

  230. so to speak, to use Paul's words. And that's

  231. what we want to strive to do, to be faithful

  232. followers of Jesus Christ, to try to love like

  233. he does, to have grace like he does, to have

  234. compassion and patience like he does, so the

  235. world will see the beauty and the beautiful fragrance

  236. that is in Jesus Christ. Let's pray. God, we

  237. come to you. We thank you for this simple word

  238. that we understand, dear Lord. We understand

  239. that... We don't like stinky stuff. We like stuff

  240. that smells good, dear Lord. So we need to strive

  241. in our life to be one who puts off a pleasant

  242. fragrance of the love and the grace of Jesus

  243. Christ in the world that we live in, dear Lord.

  244. I pray that you would help us even when we encounter

  245. people, dear Lord, that don't want to hear the

  246. truth of your word. And even when we preach the

  247. message of grace and forgiveness and compassion,

  248. dear Lord, even still. some find that offensive.

  249. But God, I pray that you just be with us. Give

  250. us the courage that we need and the strength

  251. that we need to do your work. Help us to be better

  252. examples for you. Maybe there are some areas

  253. in our life where we are really not people that

  254. anybody wants to be around by our actions and

  255. our attitude. And I pray that you would help

  256. our hearts to change, that you would help us

  257. to have a heart that is... more like yours, dear

  258. Lord, that we can learn from Paul and those who

  259. were faithful to serve alongside him, dear Lord,

  260. that we would be so on fire for you that we would

  261. be a pleasant presence when we enter the room

  262. and enter into contact with those we encounter.

  263. And I ask these things in Jesus' name. Amen.
