  1. When times are pleasant and enjoyable in our

  2. lives, I believe that it's often easy to remain

  3. aloof or indifferent to the presence of the Lord

  4. in our lives, to the things of God in our lives.

  5. When things are pleasant and enjoyable in our

  6. lives, it's very easy to be forgetful of God

  7. and to neglect the fact that God is, in fact,

  8. with us as his people. Why is that, brothers

  9. and sisters? Why is it that when times are good

  10. and pleasant, It's so much easier for us to be

  11. neglectful of the Lord and the fact that he is

  12. with us. Well, it's because the good blessings

  13. that God has given to us in this life, the kind

  14. things that God has given to us in this world,

  15. steal our affections away from the one who has

  16. given them to us. The earthly comforts, the earthly

  17. pleasures, the earthly things of this world steal

  18. our heart's affections away from the living God

  19. who has given them to us. Then comes suffering

  20. into our lives. The earthly comforts are stripped

  21. away. The earthly pleasures and enjoyments are

  22. peeled back so that all that remains is the Lord.

  23. So that all that remains is Christ. So that all

  24. that remains is faith. So that all that remains

  25. is strength from God. Suffering we will see today.

  26. can actually be very, very beneficial in the

  27. life of the believer because it brings us to

  28. a place of intimate communion with God himself.

  29. David says in Psalm 23, Even though I walk through

  30. the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no

  31. evil, and listen to what he says here, for you

  32. are with me. The first thing we have to consider

  33. this morning is the intimate communion that David

  34. has come to enjoy in the darkness of his life.

  35. In verses 1 -3, David is talking about the Lord.

  36. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He

  37. makes me lie down. He's not using direct speech.

  38. He's not having direct interaction and fellowship

  39. with the Lord. He's talking about the Lord being

  40. his shepherd. But then in verse 4 and following,

  41. we read that he says this, You are with me. It

  42. becomes direct. He speaks directly with the Lord.

  43. He comes to a place when the trouble comes in

  44. his life that he experiences and enjoys intimate

  45. communion and fellowship with God. We see that

  46. he's no longer talking about the Lord. Now he's

  47. talking to the Lord directly and intimately.

  48. This communion with God coincides with and is

  49. simultaneous to the arrival and the appearance

  50. of the valleys and the shadows. Is it not, brothers

  51. and sisters? So we see that the arrival of suffering

  52. in his life, the appearance of affliction in

  53. David's life, incurs and invokes and brings about

  54. and puts him in a place and brings him to a place

  55. where he's in an intimate fellowship with the

  56. living God, his shepherd. The affliction brings

  57. this about. You see, something that suffering

  58. does in this life, in the life of the believer,

  59. is that it brings them nearer and closer to the

  60. Lord. Now, one thing that we have to recognize,

  61. and we'll see this, Lord willing, we'll see that

  62. it's not that the Lord comes and goes so much,

  63. but it's the fact that in suffering we are driven

  64. to the Lord because we are distant. We are further

  65. away. We fluctuate in our nearness and our closeness

  66. to the Lord himself. It's not the Lord so much

  67. as it is us and our feeble affections and our

  68. feeble hearts and our feeble minds. Because we

  69. go up and down. We come and go. Not the Lord.

  70. So suffering can bring us to a place That is

  71. beneficial because it brings us closer to the

  72. Lord. It makes God real to the believer. It makes

  73. their faith real to the believer that suffers.

  74. No longer are these theoretical realities. No

  75. longer are these theoretical ideas and concepts.

  76. that we can merely talk about. But now when hardship

  77. comes in our life, our faith, our heart religion,

  78. is put to the test. Our religion is tested and

  79. tried. Does our faith really work? Do we really

  80. trust in the Lord? Do we really believe His promises?

  81. Do we genuinely have hope? Our religion, our

  82. heart religion, is tested and tried. And the

  83. effectiveness and the invincibility of faith

  84. is demonstrated time and time again as the believer

  85. suffers. We see in 2 Corinthians chapter 12,

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  86. this very thing takes place in the life of the

  87. Apostle Paul. We read in 2 Corinthians chapter

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  88. 12. Starting in verse 7. Because of the surpassing

  89. greatness of the revelations, because of the

  90. surpassing greatness of the revelations, for

  91. this reason, to keep me from exalting myself,

  92. there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger

  93. of Satan to torment me. To keep me from exalting

  94. myself. Concerning this I implored the Lord three

  95. times. That it might leave me. And he said to

  96. me. My grace is sufficient for you. My power

  97. is perfected in weakness. Most gladly therefore

  98. I will rather boast about my weaknesses. So that

  99. the power of Christ may dwell in me. In verse

  100. 10. Therefore I am well content. with weaknesses,

  101. with insults, and distresses, with persecutions,

  102. with difficulties, for Christ's sake. For when

  103. I am weak, then I am strong. What do we see in

  104. the Apostle Paul's life? That the Lord is creating

  105. weakness in his life to make him strong in the

  106. Lord. The Lord brings about pain and suffering

  107. in his life to make him more useful in Christ.

  108. That his power might shine forth through the

  109. apostle. He's making him reliant upon faith.

  110. He's making him reliant upon the Lord and not

  111. himself. You see, suffering, brothers and sisters,

  112. is the great... Pride crusher. It demolishes

  113. pride in the life of people. It crushes pride

  114. on the head and smashes it and obliterates it

  115. to a million pieces. It does away with self -confidence

  116. and arrogance and pride and haughtiness in the

  117. life of God's people. And it brings them low

  118. so that they are cast on faith in Christ. and

  119. the need for His power, and His strength, and

  120. His might. They're brought to a place where all

  121. the human reliances they have in their life,

  122. the human dependencies, the worldly and earthly

  123. dependencies in their life, are taken away and

  124. ripped away from them. They don't have them anymore.

  125. So what do they have left? They have faith in

  126. the Lord Jesus. And they grow strong in that

  127. faith, the Lord Jesus Christ. So, suffering is

  128. beneficial. Now we see that this is what takes

  129. place when we see that this is a reality in David's

  130. life because of this communion that he's enjoying

  131. with the Lord. So we also have to consider that

  132. the communion that David is enjoying is built

  133. on the fact that God is with him. David says,

  134. for you are with me. Now the imagery presented

  135. here, we can imagine it. I'm sure you have it

  136. in your mind's eye already. You have the sheep,

  137. and you have the dark, deep valley. You have

  138. the gloom. You have the frightening imagery and

  139. the frightening darkness approaching. You're

  140. in it, but the sheep are not alone. The shepherd

  141. is with them, guiding, directing, and providing

  142. all the while. David says, you are with me. This

  143. leads us to the inevitable question, one I'm

  144. sure that many of us have asked through our lives,

  145. and we've asked time and time again as we read

  146. the Bible and the Scriptures, what does that

  147. mean exactly? That God is with me. I know what

  148. it means when my mom or my dad or my brother

  149. or my sister or my child is with me. Because

  150. they're present with me. But what does it mean

  151. when the Bible says that you are with me speaking

  152. of God? Now, to answer this, we must first understand

  153. the nature of God. And we must understand that

  154. men are always in the presence of God, as it

  155. were. Men are always before God. And this is

  156. because of the nature of the living God. We could

  157. look at Proverbs chapter 15, verse 3, which says

    Proverbs 15:3

  158. this, The eyes of the Lord are in every place,

  159. watching the evil and the good. God sees all.

  160. God observes all. God watches all because God

  161. is omnipresent. Everything, whether a person

  162. recognizes it or not, is quorum Deo, before the

  163. face of God. Every single thing is quorum Deo,

  164. before the face of God. There's no escaping that

  165. reality, whether you're a believer or an unbeliever.

  166. What you do, what you think, how you live, your

  167. actions, your thoughts, everything, is quorum

  168. Deo, before the face of God, because he's a holy,

  169. righteous, infinite, spiritual being. He sees

  170. and knows all. Nothing is concealed from him.

  171. Nothing is kept from him. We read in 2 Chronicles.

    2 Chronicles 16 chapter mention

  172. Chapter 16. Verse 9. Oh, I'm sorry. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  173. 4. Verse 13. Which says this. And there is no

  174. creature hidden from his sight. But all things

  175. are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with

  176. whom we have to do. Everything is open and laid

  177. bare before the sight of God because everything

  178. is in the presence of the living God. Everything

  179. is set before him. Everything is in front of

  180. his face. Now to help us understand this, I want

  181. to read a quote. from a theologian, John Frame.

  182. He says this, and this is really, really important

  183. with our understanding of who God is. God is

  184. not a vague, abstract principle or force, but

  185. a living and true God, as opposed to all the

  186. deaf and dumb idols of the world. Knowledge of

  187. him, therefore, is also a person -to -person

  188. knowledge. God's presence is not something that

  189. we discover through refined theoretical intellect

  190. or intellectual thinking. And here it is, brothers

  191. and sisters, listen to this. Rather, God is unavoidably

  192. close to His creation. We are involved with Him

  193. all the time. Do you know why that is? Because

  194. God is omnipresent. God is an infinite, eternal,

  195. self -existent, sovereign, spiritual, personal

  196. being. A person. Not a force or a principle who

  197. is everywhere all the time. He is always. and

  198. we are always set before him. The deepest secrets

  199. of our heart, brothers and sisters, can you conceal

  200. those from the living God? The most subtle thoughts

  201. in your mind, which nobody else around you knows,

  202. are those kept from the face of the living God?

  203. No. Now what we'll find is that this is incredibly

  204. comforting. for the believer in suffering, but

  205. this ought to be incredibly frightening and terrifying

  206. to the unbeliever who doesn't know Christ. The

  207. believer ought to find comfort in the fact that

  208. the living God is with them. The unbeliever ought

  209. to be terrified and frightened out of their boots

  210. that they are in the hands of the sovereign God,

  211. that He sees and knows all that they do. He knows

  212. that they reject Christ. He knows that they love

  213. their sin or are unwilling to forsake it for

  214. the gospel of His Son who gave His life. Believers

  215. ought to find great encouragement and strength

  216. and the character and nature of the living God.

  217. And unbelievers ought to consider this reality

  218. that everything is laid bare. And they ought

  219. to be frightened and fearful. I've seen something

  220. recently going around that says, When Jonathan

  221. Edwards wants to encourage believers, he reminds

  222. them that they are in God's hands. But when Jonathan

  223. Edwards wants to instill fear in the unbeliever,

  224. he reminds them that they are in God's hands.

  225. You know why that is? Why does that bring encouragement?

  226. To the believer. With faith. Who has been given

  227. the righteousness of Christ. And why does that

  228. instill fear. In the heart of the unbelieving

  229. man. Encouragement for those in Christ. Because

  230. he is a loving father. Who cares for us. Who

  231. is present and involved. In our hardships. But

  232. for the unbeliever. They don't have the righteousness

  233. of Christ. They don't have faith. God is a holy

  234. and a righteous God. And they are in His hands

  235. and they hate Him. And there's enmity with this

  236. holy and righteous God. He can drop you at any

  237. moment into the pits and depths of hell because

  238. He's a sovereign God. It should incur and bring

  239. about and stir up the longing for repentance

  240. in your life. It should create an urgency in

  241. your soul because God could drop you at any moment.

  242. You are in His sovereign hands. the believer

  243. will never be dropped. They will be carried to

  244. the celestial city. They will be carried by the

  245. sovereign, powerful, mighty right hand to the

  246. great city of God. And he will never drop the

  247. believer. So we have to understand the fact that

  248. God Is an infinite. Eternal spiritual being.

  249. Who is omnipresent. And he is personal. But we

  250. also have to understand. And we must grasp. That

  251. David is speaking. Not in a general way. David

  252. is speaking in a unique way. That God is with

  253. him. In a covenantal sense. The Bible. does not

  254. say that God is with the unbeliever. That is

  255. something that is unique and distinct to those

  256. in covenantal relationship with God. We see it

  257. that God was with the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac,

  258. and Jacob. We see that God was with Israel, the

  259. nation. His covenant people. We see that God

  260. was with Moses. We see that God was with Joshua.

  261. We see that when the birth and the announcement

  262. of the Messiah is announced in the Gospels early

  263. on, what is the name of this God that would take

  264. on flesh? Emmanuel. God with us. In a redemptive,

  265. covenantal sense, brothers and sisters. So David

  266. isn't speaking about the fact that all men are

  267. with God and God is with all men. No, he's talking

  268. about the fact that God is uniquely and distinctly

  269. with His covenant people in their suffering.

  270. Psalm 34 .15 says this, The eyes of the Lord

  271. are continually toward the righteous and His

  272. ears open to their cries. Whose eyes are the

  273. Lord's toward? Who is the Lord's eyes toward?

  274. Who is his gaze set upon? The righteous man.

  275. Those who are God -fearing. Those who have faith.

  276. Those who are in covenant relationship with God.

  277. The people of God. Whose cries does he hear?

  278. His people. He's in covenant relationship with

  279. them. We read in... 2 Chronicles chapter 16,

    2 Chronicles 16:9

  280. verse 9. For the eyes of the Lord move to and

  281. fro throughout the earth, that He may strongly

  282. support those whose heart is completely His.

  283. The Lord in all His sovereignty, in all His might,

  284. in all His infinity, brothers and sisters, in

  285. all His omnipresence, is for the believer, is

  286. for the righteous man who has been given faith

  287. and made new by the power of God. He's speaking

  288. in a covenantal sense. The Bible explains many

  289. ways that the Lord is with his covenant people.

  290. He is with them to help them and strengthen them.

  291. We read this in Psalm. 46, 1 -2 and verse 7.

  292. He is a very present help in times of trouble.

  293. He is with his people in trouble. He is with

  294. his people to uphold them and sustain them by

  295. his mighty right hand. Isaiah 41, 10 -14. His

  296. sovereign hand exists and serves the people of

  297. God by upholding them, bearing them up, sustaining

  298. them. He is with them in that capacity. He is

  299. with his people to support, care for, provide,

  300. lead, and protect. We could look at Psalm 73,

  301. 23, or 45, verses 16 through 17. He is with his

  302. people to give them victory and to fulfill his

  303. promises in their life and to fight on their

  304. behalf. You remember when Joshua... was getting

  305. ready to go into the promised land. And he's

  306. obviously fearful of the enemies of God. Now,

  307. these promises were given through Moses, and

  308. Moses told Joshua these things earlier on, but

  309. then God reiterates these same things to Joshua

  310. himself. And what's the justification that God

  311. gives to Joshua for not being fearful? I am with

  312. you. The Lord will go ahead of him. The Lord

  313. will conquer the enemies. The Lord will drive

  314. out the enemies on his behalf. The Lord will

  315. give him success. The Lord will fight for him.

  316. The Lord is with him. And Joshua girded up his

  317. loins and obeyed the Lord and led the nation

  318. of Israel into the promised land. God is with

  319. his people. So when we consider the answer to

  320. this question, this inevitable question of what

  321. does it mean that God is with us, or what does

  322. it mean when David says, for you are with me.

  323. What does this mean? It means the Lord, because

  324. of his covenantal promises, his gracious promises,

  325. His love for His people, means that He, as a

  326. gracious and loving Father, in the darkest, as

  327. a gracious and loving Father, is intimately present

  328. and actively involved in the darkest hours of

  329. your life as a believer in Jesus Christ. Intimately

  330. present and actively involved. And what's He

  331. doing? He's strengthening you. He's preserving

  332. you. He's sustaining you. He's protecting you.

  333. He's fighting on your behalf. He's working for

  334. you in your life. His mighty right hand is with

  335. you. Psalm 73 talks about how the Lord has taken

  336. hold of my right hand. Now the Lord has strengthened

  337. Asaph, I believe. Now the Lord has given him

  338. strength in his life. That's how the Lord is

  339. present and with his people. He helps them in

  340. their trials, in their sufferings. Now I want

  341. to encourage you with this, brothers and sisters.

  342. When we think about this and the fact that God

  343. is with David in his trial, In the valleys and

  344. the shadows. David always had people around him.

  345. He always had the royal court. He always had

  346. faithful friends. He always had individuals around

  347. him. But listen, in this text, David doesn't

  348. say, Bathsheba is with me. He doesn't say that

  349. his advisor is with him. He says, for you are

  350. with me, the Lord. is with me. There are some

  351. trials and there are some sufferings and afflictions

  352. in life, brothers and sisters, which are so severe

  353. that it seems as though there isn't anybody else

  354. with you because nobody understands. Nobody knows

  355. what I'm going through. Nobody can feel what

  356. I'm feeling. Nobody can endure what I'm doing

  357. because it's so hard. But listen here, believer.

  358. Hear me, the Lord is with you in those moments.

  359. When nobody else can get into your soul and know

  360. what's taking place, hear me well, God is with

  361. you. You can say as those with faith, you are

  362. with me. Some of our sweetest moments. of communion

  363. and fellowship with the living God are often

  364. taking place in some of the darkest moments of

  365. our lives. Have you ever thought about that?

  366. Some of the times when you enjoy God the most,

  367. some of the times when you... You enjoy the presence

  368. of God and you know that He's real and you know

  369. that He's working and you know that He's helping.

  370. Some of the sweetest moments of communion with

  371. the Word of God and prayer and the fellowship

  372. of the saints and the preaching of the Word and

  373. the gathering of the church. When are some of

  374. those moments, brothers and sisters? Often when

  375. are those moments? In the darkest moments of

  376. our lives. Now this does not mean... That we'll

  377. always have the sensible presence of God. This

  378. does not mean that we'll always have the felt

  379. presence of God in our lives. Job knew that God

  380. was with him. He knew and he believed that God

  381. was working his purposes. But Job, in Job 23,

  382. it's clear and evident that he could not sense

  383. God's presence with him. But he believed. That

  384. God was with him. He knew that God was in the

  385. midst of his suffering. He knew that there was

  386. a purpose in the pain. He knew that there was

  387. a purpose in the affliction. It was by faith.

  388. So, don't cast off the darkness. Don't cast off

  389. the suffering in your life. Let it cast you down

  390. onto Christ. Don't push it away. Embrace it,

  391. brothers and sisters, and let it do its work

  392. in your life and drive you to Christ by faith.

  393. To rid yourself of the vanity and the pride and

  394. the arrogance and the ingratitude and the sin

  395. and the corruption and to bring you to a place

  396. where you are more reliant and dependent on the

  397. living God by faith. That's one of the grand

  398. purposes. Of suffering in the life of God's people.

  399. So, David has this communion because the Lord

  400. is with him. We also must consider that David

  401. enjoys this communion. Because he recognizes

  402. that God is with him. For you are with me. What

  403. is he doing? He's consciously recognizing the

  404. fact that God is with him. He has the knowledge

  405. that God is with him. He's setting the Lord before

  406. himself. In a sense, we could say David is putting

  407. himself into the presence of God. By recognizing

  408. that God is with him. Psalm 16 .8 says, I have

  409. set the Lord continually before me. What's he

  410. mean? He means that he is recognizing that God

  411. is with him. We are always before the face of

  412. God, right, brothers and sisters? We know this.

  413. We are always in his presence. But that does

  414. not mean that we always set the Lord before us.

  415. That does not mean that we always put the Lord

  416. in front of us. It does not mean that we always

  417. recognize and remember and recall the fact that

  418. God is with us. That's what David is doing here.

  419. He's recognizing that God is with him. And this

  420. knowledge that God is with him is a source of

  421. great strength. It is a source of great confidence

  422. and boldness. What does he say? Your rod and

  423. your staff, they comfort me. He derives comfort

  424. from the reality that God in his sovereignty

  425. and his power is with him in the suffering. But

  426. we also find in the second half of Psalm 16,

  427. 8, he says, because you are at my right hand,

  428. I shall not. be shaken. What about when David

  429. says, I fear no evil? What's the basis for that

  430. statement? The fact that the Lord is with David.

  431. He derives great comfort, peace, hope, and confidence

  432. to endure and press on in trial from the fact

  433. that God is intimately involved, intimately with

  434. him. and actively present and working in his

  435. situation. Knowing who is with you has a great

  436. effect on our confidence in life, I believe,

  437. brothers and sisters. Yes, trials can be large

  438. and big and expansive. Suffering can be and seem

  439. overwhelming. Hardship in our lives can seem

  440. continual, like a battering ram that picks us

  441. up and whacks us down all in one movement, over

  442. and over and over, and we think, what is going

  443. on? They seem like giants at times. They seem

  444. insurmountable at times in our lives. When the

  445. darkness is all around us and we're in the midst

  446. of the valley, it can seem very, very frightening

  447. and very, very overwhelming. But this is when

  448. it's important to remember who is with you. To

  449. remember who... is at your right hand in the

  450. midst of your trial, in the midst of your suffering,

  451. in the midst of your affliction. Yes, this affliction

  452. may be severe, but is it bigger and greater and

  453. mightier than God himself? No. God is with me.

  454. Is this suffering or this trial so expansive

  455. that it cannot be controlled and it cannot be

  456. used for your good? No, God is with me, brothers

  457. and sisters. The knowledge of who is with you

  458. has the distinct ability to strengthen you in

  459. this life. To bolster you for the suffering and

  460. to face the suffering that you're presently in,

  461. in your life. All of this should encourage us

  462. to seek and enjoy communion with God in our lives

  463. all the time, but especially in suffering, brothers

  464. and sisters. When trials come in your life, that

  465. is not the time to throw away your Bible. That

  466. is not the time. To stop getting on your knees

  467. and seeking the face of God. When the darkness

  468. arrives, that is the time to seek out the face

  469. of God more than you ever have. That is the time

  470. to fellowship with Him more than you ever have.

  471. That is the time to lean into your fellowship

  472. and your communion with the living God by faith.

  473. We will not. As stated earlier about Job, we

  474. will not always have the sensible or felt presence

  475. of God in trials. At times you will, and you

  476. will enjoy that blessing. At other times, you

  477. will not. So what do we need to do in the darkness

  478. and in the suffering? When it arrives, we need

  479. to look to the Word of God. Over and over and

  480. over. Because these are promises. The fact that

  481. God is with David, that's a promise, brothers

  482. and sisters. And that means that we have to go

  483. to the word of God and we have to believe that

  484. promise and we have to lean on that promise like

  485. Jacob leaned on his staff. We have to cast ourselves

  486. on it. We have to bring those promises before

  487. God. Lord, you said you would be an ever -present

  488. help in my times of trouble. Bring them to the

  489. Lord and recognize that God will never leave

  490. you and he will never forsake you. And do you

  491. know why? Because Christ died for sinners. No

  492. promise of God will be revoked. And no promise

  493. of God will be left incomplete or unfulfilled

  494. in the life of the believer. That means that

  495. he will always be with the believer. That means

  496. he will always be present. And that means he

  497. will always be actively working in your life.

  498. In the dark moments and in the pleasant moments

  499. of your life. Because Christ died. He secured

  500. the guarantee of God's promises. All the promises

  501. of God are yes and amen in Christ, brothers and

  502. sisters. So, when we're tempted to doubt that

  503. God is with me or with you, look to the cross

  504. of Calvary. Christ died for me. The Spirit of

  505. God makes those promises effective in me. God's

  506. providence supports me in my life. Look to the

  507. cross when you are threatened to doubt. Look

  508. to the cross and be reminded of God's faithfulness

  509. and the fact that He will fulfill every promise

  510. to His people.
