  5. us up on Facebook. And now we hope that this

  6. message from God's Word will be a blessing to you.

  7. We're going to be in the book of Numbers tonight.

  8. Numbers chapter #13 if you find your place there in Numbers

  9. chapter #13 I'm sure a very well known portion of scripture for

  10. us tonight. Nothing new, but I believe

  11. something for us none the less. Something from God's Word,

  12. something that the Lord would have for us if you found your

  13. place there in Numbers chapter 13.

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  14. If you could stand, please, in honor of the reading of God's

  15. Word, Numbers chapter 13, We're going to read a bit here.

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  16. We'll read the first 3 verses. We'll skip down a bit.

  17. We'll read the remainder of the chapter, and we'll jump right

  18. into us. So if you'd read along quietly

  19. while I read out loud, the Bible says in Numbers 13, beginning in

  20. verse #1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Send thou men,

  21. that they may search the land of Canaan, which I have, which I

  22. give unto the children of Israel, of every tribe of their

  23. father. Shall ye send a man, everyone, a

  24. ruler among them? And Moses by the commandment of

  25. the Lord sent them from the wilderness of Paran.

  26. All those men were heads of the children of Israel.

  27. And he goes through and gives the name of all of those men

  28. down through verse 16. So if you'd pick up in verse 17,

  29. it says, and Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and

  30. said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into

  31. the mountain and see the land. What it is, the people that

  32. dwell therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many.

  33. And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or

  34. bad. And what cities they be that

  35. they dwell in, whether in tents or in strongholds.

  36. And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be

  37. wood therein or not. And be ye of good courage and

  38. bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the

  39. first ripe grapes. So they went up and searched the

  40. land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehab, as men come to

  41. Hamas. And they descended by the South

  42. and came unto Hebron, where Ahiman, Shishayai, and Talmayai,

  43. the children of Anak, were. Now Hebron was built seven years

  44. before Zoan in Egypt. And they came under the brook of

  45. Eshkol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of

  46. grapes, and they bear it between two upon a staff.

  47. And they brought of the pomegranates and of the figs.

  48. The place was called the brook Eshkol, because of the cluster

  49. of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

  50. And they returned from searching of the land after 40 days.

  51. And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the

  52. congregation of the children of Israel under the wilderness of

  53. Proran to Kadish, and brought back word unto them, and sent

  54. unto all the congregation, and showed them, I'm sorry.

  55. And brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation,

  56. and showed them the fruit of the land.

  57. And they told him, and said, We came unto the land, whither thou

  58. sentest us? And surely it floweth with milk

  59. and honey, and this is the fruit of it.

  60. Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land,

  61. and the cities are walled and very great.

  62. And moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

  63. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South, and the Hittites

  64. and the Jebusites and the Amorites dwell in the mountains,

  65. and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.

  66. And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us

  67. go up at once and possess it, for we are well able to overcome

  68. it. But the men that went up with

  69. him said we'd be not able to go up against the people, for they

  70. are stronger than we. And they brought up an evil

  71. report of the land which they had searched under the children

  72. of Israel, saying, The land through which we have gone to

  73. search it is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof.

  74. And all the people that we saw in it are men of great statue.

  75. And there we saw the Giants, the son of Anak, which come of the

  76. Giants. And we were in our own sight as

  77. grasshoppers. And so we were in their sight.

  78. Thank you. You may be seated.

  79. When I was younger, I remember living.

  80. We lived in Florida. We lived on a cul-de-sac.

  81. I remember the day that my dad decided I was going to learn to

  82. ride a bike without training wheels.

  83. It was a good day for me. I thought, you know, we're going

  84. to take off the training wheels. I'm going to get to ride a bike

  85. the way you're supposed to ride a bike.

  86. No training wheels. It's going to be awesome.

  87. So I hopped up on that bike and I took off out into that

  88. cul-de-sac. And I didn't go very far.

  89. I fell and I skinned my knee. And like most young boys who

  90. skinned their knee, I thought it was the end of the world.

  91. And I cried. And I do remember that.

  92. I remember that my dad had, he had a common saying, whenever we

  93. would hurt ourselves, he would come up and he'd say, got any

  94. bones sticking out? You bleeding, you're fine.

  95. That was usually about how the conversation went, and that's

  96. what I got. My skinned, my knee was skinned,

  97. but I didn't have any bones sticking out.

  98. It wasn't bleeding a whole lot. So he said get up, get on the

  99. bike, do it again. And I'm happy to report I can

  100. ride a bike now. OK, If you were worried, I can.

  101. I can ride bikes today like the rest of us just fine.

  102. You got to meet some of my children back there.

  103. James is the second youngest. He's five.

  104. He got his first bike when he was 3 and it did have trading

  105. wheels. He can now ride without training

  106. wheels. The fact that he's very proud

  107. about, but when he first got his bike, there was some learning

  108. that involved. Even though he had training

  109. wheels, so he didn't have to worry about falling over most of

  110. the time, he did have to learn about things like turning.

  111. If you turn the bike too far, you fall.

  112. And he didn't understand this. So we had to learn about that.

  113. He had to learn about how how to how to how to pedal the bike and

  114. how to use the bike and how to ride the bike.

  115. And he was doing really, really well on the bike.

  116. And he enjoyed it and enjoyed it so much that he got to go to a

  117. bigger bike now. Yeah, again, one without

  118. training wheels. I also have a daughter back

  119. there. Her name is Evelyn.

  120. She got her first bike. When she was 5?

  121. No, I know she was 3/2. That's right.

  122. When she was three. I'm sorry.

  123. She got her first bike when she was 3, but it took her two years

  124. to ride that bike. Much to her father's chagrin.

  125. Because I got her the bike and I showed her how to ride it and I

  126. tried to help her and I tried to get her to overcome her fears

  127. and she refused. She was scared.

  128. She thought she was going to fall.

  129. She wouldn't pedal it. She wouldn't even try.

  130. She would rather go and sit on the porch then ride her bike.

  131. And I tried and I tried and eventually she was able to ride

  132. her bike, but it took a long time.

  133. And we like to ride bikes over the summer time.

  134. We go and we ride around Wampatuck and stuff.

  135. And, and this was a couple years ago when all this happened, when

  136. they all started learning how to ride bikes.

  137. I have a burly like a little trailer that we tow and I had to

  138. tow them. So it was.

  139. Very. I was wanting them to ride their

  140. own bike because going uphill with a couple of kids in the

  141. trailer in my shape, it didn't end well for me.

  142. I I could make it up some hills, but there were a couple, you

  143. know, the hills where you think you're at the top and you Crest

  144. it and it's like, Nope, there's another part to it.

  145. Yeah. That that was that's where I

  146. stopped and I walked up hill because it was it was too much

  147. for me. But I wanted them to learn how

  148. to ride their bike because I wanted them to not miss out on

  149. the joys of riding a bike, to be able to to overcome something

  150. that they were scared of, something that was difficult to

  151. be able to rise. To the challenge and conquer the

  152. challenge, and in a sense, to be able to.

  153. Learn to ride a bike. OK, I hope that makes sense.

  154. It's pretty simple. Maybe you remember when you

  155. learned how to ride a bike. But I wanted them to not miss

  156. out on that. And as I thought about that, and

  157. I thought about this passage, I thought about how we've all

  158. stood on the threshold. Of something great, of God's

  159. will for our life. If you will.

  160. They've all, we've all stood on that threshold, whether it be

  161. about about getting married or about children or about a job or

  162. about college, about moving, about a relationship, about.

  163. Whatever. We've all had a moment where we

  164. stood on the threshold and we had to make a decision about

  165. what we were going to do and taking that step was going to be

  166. difficult. It wasn't going to be easy like

  167. riding a bike. It, it wasn't something you're,

  168. you're just going to jump on the bike and start pedaling with no

  169. training wheels and nothing bad is going to happen.

  170. There's, there's some things that are going to hurt.

  171. You're going to have to work for it.

  172. We've all stood on that threshold of seeing God's will

  173. accomplished in our lives as parents, husbands, wife's,

  174. teachers, employees, just as a disciple of Christ.

  175. We've all stood on the threshold.

  176. It could be a choice. You know God's calling me to

  177. give. We have every year we have

  178. missions conference and the pastor calls on us at the end of

  179. the missions conference to plan with faith promised missions

  180. what we're going to give and I pray about it and God lays an

  181. amount on my. Heart.

  182. And often times it's an amount that's more than I want to give,

  183. and I have to make a choice. I'm standing on the threshold of

  184. God's will for my life and I have to make a choice.

  185. Of whether I'm going to take that step of faith or whether

  186. I'm going to turn aside out of fear, out of uncertainty.

  187. The choice of either taking the narrow and often hard way that

  188. God calls us to or turning back and giving up and never

  189. ascending the mountain of God's will and enjoying the blessings

  190. that God wants to give us. You know the the promised land

  191. was the blessing that God wanted to give to his people, to

  192. Israel. He had promised them that land

  193. over 400 years before we get to Numbers Chapter 13, He had

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  194. promised. It to them, and here they were,

  195. and they were quite literally on the threshold of seeing God's

  196. promises fulfilled. They were on the threshold of

  197. living in the promised land, the place of blessing, the land

  198. flowing with milk and honey, the land that God had promised them

  199. that was just a beautiful, wonderful land that God said He

  200. was going to give them. He promised them that they would

  201. just have to walk in and walk around in the places where their

  202. feet fell, that that would be their land.

  203. He said that he would send a Hornet that would drive out the

  204. other nations out of the land. These are all promises that you

  205. can read in the book of Genesis, in the book of Exodus, in the

  206. book of Deuteronomy. These are what God said He was

  207. going to do for them. And here they were at Kadish, or

  208. Kadish Barnea as you probably are more familiar with it, South

  209. of the Promised land. All they have to do is cross the

  210. border. And they're there.

  211. That's it. They are on the threshold.

  212. They can see it. It's a step across.

  213. And they're in God's will. They're in God's perfect

  214. blessing for their life. Their enemies would turn their

  215. backs and flee from them. God promised.

  216. God didn't say it would be easy. He didn't say there wouldn't be

  217. challenges. There had been challenges and

  218. obstacles. For 400 years to get them to

  219. this place, but they were on the threshold and all they had to do

  220. was take one step of faith. You know the story, we read the

  221. story, you're familiar with the story.

  222. They don't take the step of faith.

  223. Numbers Chapter 14, not only they do not take the step of

    Numbers 14 chapter mention

  224. faith, they want to go backwards.

  225. I preached a message on that one too, and I'm not doing that

  226. tonight. We don't have time for both.

  227. But Numbers Chapter 14, they want to go back.

    Numbers 14 chapter mention

  228. They are so discouraged and disappointed by what happens in

  229. Numbers 13 that they would rather go back.

  230. To Egypt, than take one step and enjoy God's blessing.

  231. Why did that happen? What happened at Kadish Barnia

  232. that caused them to refuse to take that step?

  233. To refuse to step into God's perfect will for their life.

  234. In this passage, the first thing that happens is there are 12

  235. spies that are commissioned and sent into the promised land,

  236. Moses, Moses by order of God. And this happens also in the

  237. book of Deuteronomy. It's, it's a, a companion

  238. passage. And so in that passage it says

  239. that it was the people's idea. It, it's, it's hard to say whose

  240. idea it was first, whether God commissioned it and the people

  241. agreed, or whether people said we want to do it and God said,

  242. let's do it. But the point is here.

  243. God was OK with it. God said this is what we're

  244. going to do. Moses, I want you to send 12

  245. spies in. I want you to pick one from each

  246. of the 12 tribes, a head, a leader, somebody who can

  247. represent the people. And they're going to go into the

  248. land and they're going to spy it out.

  249. They're going to check it out, see what it looks like, see what

  250. you're getting yourself into. And they're going to come back

  251. and report on what they find. That's in the 1st 16 verses.

  252. Is where these spies are commissioned and they represent

  253. representative again of the entire group of people.

  254. They could have traveled anywhere.

  255. I there's a lot of debate about how far they traveled, 250 miles

  256. up to 500 miles. A lot of walking just depends on

  257. how many miles a day they did, how much they stopped to admire

  258. what they were looking at. But they traveled.

  259. They were had 40 days to wander around in the promised land.

  260. They were given directions they were supposed to go.

  261. Here, see this. Do that, come back with some of

  262. the fruit and report. On what they saw, that was the

  263. Commission, that that was the plan.

  264. Moses told them in verse 17 that he they wanted to see what the

  265. land was like, what the people were like, whether they were in

  266. tents or in strongholds, whether the land is good or bad, what

  267. the fruit is like, whether there's wood or whether it's all

  268. grassland. These are the kinds of things

  269. they were supposed to be looking for.

  270. What's interesting though, the Children of Israel.

  271. No one in the Children of Israel has seen this land again for 400

  272. years. Abraham was there, Jacob was

  273. there. Joseph went down Joseph's,

  274. Jacob's son Joseph went down to Egypt.

  275. He was sold into slavery. Then Jacob moved his whole

  276. family down to Egypt. No one's been back.

  277. As far as we know. No one ever went back to Canaan.

  278. No one's seen this land. All they have is the promise of

  279. God to Abraham in the Book of Genesis to go off of what this

  280. land is like. That's it.

  281. No one's seen it, no one knows what it's like, no one, no one

  282. can remember. They just have stories.

  283. But what they did see or what they were about to see wasn't

  284. something that was surprising or shouldn't have been surprising.

  285. God told them there were going to be people in the land in

  286. Exodus chapter 3 and verse #8, He said.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  287. About the land, he said, And I came down, and I am come down to

  288. deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them

  289. up out of the hand unto a good land, and a large unto a land

  290. flowing with milk and honey. So he tells them, this is going

  291. to be a beautiful land. And he tells them the play, It's

  292. the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites

  293. and the parasites and the Hittites and the Jebusites.

  294. So they haven't seen it. No one's been there.

  295. But they shouldn't be surprised by what they're going to find.

  296. God said, you're going to find a land flowing with milk and

  297. honey. It's going to be a good land, a

  298. beautiful land. It's going to be a lush green

  299. land. And you're going to find some

  300. people who are living there that I'm promising that I'll drive

  301. them out because their time is up and it's your turn to live in

  302. this land. That's what he promised them.

  303. So they weren't going to see anything new.

  304. They already should have known these things.

  305. God had already told them. What to expect and that he would

  306. take care of it. And so they search out the land

  307. just like God commissioned them to do.

  308. In verses 21 down through 25, they searched out the land.

  309. It says in verse 20 there at the end, it says, now the time was

  310. the time of the first, right? Great.

  311. So it was around July or August. That's when that would have been

  312. OK. They brought back samples.

  313. I've always, whenever I teach this passage to the junior

  314. church kids, we always stop and think about what kind of grapes

  315. need two people to carry them. Those must have been some big

  316. grapes. You had to cut it down, put it

  317. on a pole and carry it between two people.

  318. OK, These weren't your grocery store grapes.

  319. I can pick those up with one hand no problem.

  320. And so can you. These were.

  321. Watermelon sized grapes, I don't know, they were massive.

  322. They brought these back. They cut down this branch and

  323. brought back grapes and pomegranates and figs.

  324. The fruit of the land. Truly the the point of all of

  325. that was to bring it back and say this really is what God

  326. said. It's a land flowing with milk

  327. and honey. I mean, have you ever seen

  328. grapes like this? This is what's there.

  329. And we didn't have to work for it.

  330. We just walked in, walked up, cut one down and walked out.

  331. That's what God said was going to happen.

  332. He says they're going to have vines you didn't plant, fields

  333. you didn't plant, homes you didn't build.

  334. It's everything God promised. That was the point.

  335. That was what they were supposed to come back and say.

  336. It's it's a land full of life, a green, lush, growing land, a

  337. beautiful land. Everything they had dreamed of

  338. and everything God had promised. I also thought it was

  339. interesting in verse 22. It's almost like.

  340. The author hopes these men will notice something he says in

  341. verse 22. And they ascended by the South

  342. and came unto Hebron. It's easy to miss, but Hebron's

  343. a special place. The only piece of land in the

  344. land of Canaan that is owned by anyone related to the children

  345. of Israel is in Hebron, where The Cave of Macpella was

  346. purchased by Abraham to. Bury his wife, Sarah, and to

  347. bury Jacob, Abraham, Rebecca, they're all there.

  348. And they came to Hebron. They passed through Hebron.

  349. I can't help but wonder, did anybody stop and go?

  350. Hey, is that it? Is that where Abraham is?

  351. Who Way back in Genesis chapter 13, God promised we would be

    Genesis 13 chapter mention

  352. here and look where we are? Did anybody even think about

  353. that? Did they even notice?

  354. It doesn't say, it just says they.

  355. Came to Hebron. Well, it does say what they did

  356. notice. They noticed.

  357. The people says they noticed. Aheman Shishi and tell Mei the

  358. children of Anak they didn't notice.

  359. That this is where. God promised Abraham.

  360. This is the place where God promised that he would bring us

  361. back here and that that we would live in this land.

  362. And here we are, the fulfillment of God's promise.

  363. We're literally standing right where it all started. 400 years.

  364. Ago. No.

  365. What they noticed is, wow, there's some really tall giants.

  366. That's what they noticed. That's what they took note of.

  367. That's what the author indicates that they they saw.

  368. It was here in Hebron where Abraham purchased this property,

  369. where Sarah, Abraham, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob and Leah were

  370. buried, where God had given the promise and it.

  371. Should have been the place where they said wow this really is our

  372. land, just like God promised. So with the grapes in hand,

  373. having surveyed the land, having seen Hebron, seen all these

  374. things, they've, they've, they've done everything that

  375. Moses commissioned them to do, that God commissioned them to

  376. do. They've seen the land.

  377. They've brought back the proof that it's a land flowing with

  378. milk and honey. They've seen how green and lush

  379. and beautiful it is. They've seen the people.

  380. They dwell in fortified cities. That was one of the things they

  381. were supposed to see. Do they dwell in tents or do

  382. they dwell in fortified cities? They've seen all of that and

  383. they are ready to. Return 40 days later, they come

  384. back, they crossover back to Kadish and they're ready to give

  385. their report of what they saw. This begins in verse #25 They

  386. return from searching of the land after 40 days.

  387. In beginning in verse #26 they begin their report.

  388. They say, And they went and came to Moses and Aaron into all the

  389. congregation of the children of Israel under the wilderness of

  390. Quran to Kadish, and brought back word unto them and unto all

  391. the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

  392. And they told him and said, We came unto the land, whether thou

  393. sentest us? And surely it floweth with milk

  394. and honey, and this is the fruit of it.

  395. If that's where they ended, things would have gone much

  396. differently. Much differently throughout the

  397. rest of the chapter. Because that's that's a good

  398. report. They came back and they said.

  399. It's exactly what God said it was going to be.

  400. God said it's going to be a land flowing with milk and Honeywell,

  401. we've got these mega grapes here.

  402. It's it's got to be a lush green, beautiful land.

  403. Produce grapes like this and here's the fruits, the

  404. pomegranates, the figs. Man, we've been living out in

  405. the wilderness. God's been taking care of us,

  406. but. Wouldn't you like to sink your

  407. teeth into one of these? Bananas.

  408. I don't know if they had bananas or not, but maybe they had some

  409. bananas. This is the report.

  410. The fruits, the grapes, the beautiful land that floweth with

  411. milk and honey. It's rich in life.

  412. It's green, just as God had promised.

  413. I can't help but imagine as. They're perhaps walking through

  414. the camp coming up to Moses carrying these grapes.

  415. People are probably coming out. Whoa, do you see that?

  416. Is that a grape I've. Never seen a grape like that.

  417. What in the world? Where did that come from?

  418. And they're getting excited, they're getting ecstatic.

  419. This is amazing. This is exactly what God said it

  420. was going to be. They begin to start telling

  421. Moses and people are like. Did he say?

  422. Did he say it's? Flowing with milk and honey.

  423. Wow, what does that even look like?

  424. Man, we're going to be there soon.

  425. This is going to be awesome. I'm so excited.

  426. They're ecstatic. The euphoria of God's people as

  427. they hear this report. The long-awaited Promised Land

  428. is literally. Just over the hills, just over

  429. there, just a short walk and they're there and it's

  430. everything God had promised it to be.

  431. But that euphoria is very short lived.

  432. The Bible says in verse #28 Nevertheless, nevertheless, the

  433. word means despite all of that, here's all the fruit, but

  434. despite all of that, nevertheless.

  435. And their euphoria quickly vanishes.

  436. And it's really, it's replaced with an uproar.

  437. We know it is because later on when we get to it, But Caleb has

  438. to silence the people. They they they do not respond

  439. well to this. Nevertheless, if you're

  440. imagining this, you can just imagine.

  441. They're so excited. Wow, look at those grapes and

  442. they're talking, man. This is a land that flows with

  443. milk and honey. Nevertheless.

  444. What? What did you just say?

  445. What's this? Nevertheless, what do you mean

  446. despite? Have you seen this grape?

  447. What do you mean despite this grape?

  448. Nevertheless they said, yes the land is as wonderful as God

  449. promised, but despite all of that we can't conquer it.

  450. Nevertheless, the people be strong that dwell in the land

  451. despite remember that's what it means.

  452. Despite all of this, despite how God's been faithful, despite how

  453. we were in Hebron, despite how God fulfilled all his promises

  454. and has brought us, 400 years later, all the way back to right

  455. where he promised we would be. Despite all of that.

  456. They're too strong. We can't defeat them.

  457. The people who dwell in the land are too strong.

  458. Despite what God did in Egypt with the 10 plagues, what he did

  459. when they crossed the Red Sea and crushed the most powerful

  460. army in the world with an ocean. That he had just parted a few

  461. hours ago. Despite all of that, their

  462. cities are too fortified and we can't get through their walls.

  463. Despite what God has done, bringing us through the

  464. wilderness, feeding us with bread from heaven, rocks that

  465. gave us water enough to feed all of these people and all of their

  466. animals. Despite all that God has done to

  467. bring us here, they have giants. They're too big.

  468. Despite all that, God has done to.

  469. Bring us to this place. To give us this land, despite

  470. the promise of God to drive these people out like a Hornet,

  471. That is what the Bible says. That was the promise of God,

  472. that he would go before them as a Hornet.

  473. If you've ever been chased by a Hornet, you run pretty fast.

  474. That was the image. This Hornet of God would come.

  475. And the Canaanites, they wouldn't even stop to fight the

  476. children of Israel. They take off in the other

  477. direction. God said I'm going to drive them

  478. out. But despite all of that.

  479. There's the Amalekites, the Hittites, the Jebusites, the

  480. Amorites, the Canaanites, and there just isn't enough room for

  481. little old Israel to fit in with all of them.

  482. That's what that word nevertheless means.

  483. Despite all of this, we can't conquer the land.

  484. They're on the threshold, literally on the threshold of

  485. taking a step right into God's perfect will for their life.

  486. But despite all that God has done to bring them here, we

  487. can't do it. That's what they say.

  488. That is the report of the 10 spies, rather than focusing on

  489. those grapes. The beauty and greatness of the

  490. land, the huge fruits of the land.

  491. They describe the people of the land, the strong and great

  492. walled cities, the giants. One man said this I quote.

  493. He said matching the abundant and sidisable fruits are the

  494. numerous and powerful people with large fortified cities.

  495. And instead of going to places like Hebron and being reminded

  496. of Abraham and how God brought Abraham from UR all the way to

  497. Canaan, and how God blessed him and how God provided for him,

  498. and how God grew his family and how they are all descendants of

  499. Abraham just like God said they would be like the sands on the

  500. seashore instead of remembering. All of that and focusing on that

  501. they only saw the size of the buildings and the statures of

  502. the people. It's interesting their report

  503. recognizes the faithfulness of God.

  504. They. Use God's own promise.

  505. Surely it floweth with milk and honey.

  506. That is what God said. They recognize the faithfulness

  507. of God to bring them here. And still conclude we can't do

  508. it. They saw what it took to get

  509. them here. They saw bread falling from

  510. heaven. They saw literally the.

  511. Spirit of God descending upon a mountain and the ground shaking,

  512. they saw Moses come down with the 10 tablets of stone.

  513. They were there when he struck a rock and water came out of it,

  514. when the waters of the Red Sea parted, when the Bible says that

  515. hail fell from the sky and burned like fire on the ground.

  516. I've seen hail. I have never seen hail that

  517. catches on fire. But they did.

  518. And yet here they are, recognizing the faithfulness of

  519. God, the power of God to bring them here.

  520. But despite all of that. We can't conquer it.

  521. They're on the threshold, but they don't take the step.

  522. The fabulous Promised Land isn't so promising anymore.

  523. But again, remember. They shouldn't have been

  524. surprised. God told them.

  525. We read it in Exodus 3 verse 8. You're going to a land that's

    Exodus 3:8

  526. flowing with milk and honey. But guess what, there's some

  527. people there. The.

  528. Canaanites. The Jebusites.

  529. All of those Ites. They're still there.

  530. They shouldn't have been surprised, but he had already

  531. promised them I'm going to drive them out.

  532. All you have to do is walk in, walk around and wherever your

  533. feet fall, that's yours. You know what's really sad about

  534. this passage and and what happens and and I'm jumping

  535. ahead a little bit here, but that promise that God made where

  536. he said literally just. Walk in.

  537. And start walking and I'll just drive the people away from you.

  538. They never got to actually see that promise fulfilled because

  539. it was a one time promise. The next time, 40 years later,

  540. when they came back, they had to fight.

  541. They had to fight against King Cheddar Laomer and his assembled

  542. armies. They had to fight against

  543. Jericho, fight against AI. God promised them that if they

  544. walked in, he would drive the people out like a Hornet.

  545. And they missed it. And they wandered in the

  546. wilderness for the next 40 years, and they never got to see

  547. that promise fulfilled. Their children had to fight.

  548. Was God with them? Oh, yeah.

  549. Did God give them victory? You can read the book of Joshua.

  550. Oh, yeah. He gave them victory, but did

  551. the promise of God to drive the people out like a Hornet never

  552. came. They missed it.

  553. How sad it is to stand on the threshold of God's perfect will.

  554. The blessings of God are just one step away, a step of faith,

  555. and we miss them. And sometimes we don't get to

  556. come back and see them come fast again.

  557. Oh, God's good. Oh, he's very good.

  558. He's merciful. He's just, he's forgiving.

  559. But that doesn't mean you get a second chance at what he was

  560. going to do, what he was going to give, how he was going to

  561. bless. They missed out.

  562. He never promised it would be easy, but he guaranteed them

  563. victory if they would just follow him by faith.

  564. I think what's also important to recognize here, and we haven't

  565. talked about the other two spies, but what's important to

  566. recognize when you talk about the 10 spies and the two spies

  567. is they both saw the same things.

  568. It's not like Joshua and Caleb were over here looking at green

  569. grass and nice beautiful valleys with no fortified cities.

  570. And the 10 spies were over here. Oh, there's Jericho.

  571. Oh, there's the children of Manic.

  572. They all went and saw the same things.

  573. It wasn't that ten were bad and two were good.

  574. If you've ever sung the junior church song, 10 were bad and two

  575. were good. It wasn't that the two were good

  576. because they didn't see what the 10 spies saw.

  577. Everybody saw the same promised land, the same land flowing with

  578. milk and honey, the same giants, the same walled cities.

  579. But the difference or what? What happens is that two of them

  580. arrive at a completely different conclusion than the other 10.

  581. Ten of them stand there and say, yeah, we know what God has done

  582. to get us here, but nevertheless, and despite all of

  583. that, we can't take the land. But the other two, and really

  584. Caleb is the only one mentioned in this chapter as speaking.

  585. Joshua comes in in chapter 14. I can't help but wonder if maybe

  586. Caleb is the spokesperson because Joshua was Moses's

  587. second hand man. Maybe the people would have been

  588. like, but he's just he, he had, he's always going to side with

  589. Moses. But Caleb was free.

  590. Caleb had no, he didn't have to worry about Moses firing him.

  591. He could, he could have sided with the 10 spies.

  592. It could have been 11 versus 1. So we read about Caleb.

  593. And it says he silenced the people.

  594. He says stop, the people are are getting angry.

  595. If you read in chapter 14, they get angry, though they they weep

  596. all night. They're saddened.

  597. They just said what has God done to us would to God we had died

  598. in the land of Egypt. Those are the kinds of things

  599. that they're beginning to say and and for a moment Caleb says,

  600. guys, listen, wait, he doesn't he doesn't really mince a lot of

  601. words. He just says we read it, but he

  602. says here we let us go up. This is verse 30.

  603. Let us go up at once and possess it for we are well able to

  604. overcome it. Well able.

  605. I if you if you look at it in Hebrew, it's literally the same

  606. verb repeated twice. Well able.

  607. This is always saying we can really, really, really, really,

  608. really do it guys, let's go. Just repeating himself, just

  609. emphatic, let's go. We can do this.

  610. We be well able. Well able.

  611. Let us go up at once and possess it.

  612. Caleb stands up. He quiets.

  613. The people let us go. We are well able.

  614. It isn't that he again, he didn't.

  615. It wasn't that he didn't see the children of Anak.

  616. It wasn't that he didn't see the the great walled cities and the

  617. giants and all the people and all the obstacles.

  618. It wasn't that he didn't see them.

  619. Unlike most of the Israelites there, he was one of the few

  620. people who did see them. There are only 12 people at this

  621. point who've actually seen the promised land.

  622. Other than maybe a fleeting glance across the hills.

  623. There's only 12 people who've actually walked in the promised

  624. land at this point. And 10 of them have brought up a

  625. bad report. And two of them are now saying,

  626. no, we can do it, let's go right now.

  627. Just stop all this. God has been faithful.

  628. He will continue to be faithful. Let's go.

  629. We're on the threshold. Just take the step.

  630. We'd be well able let us go up at once and possess it.

  631. He's aware that Israel lacks what they lack.

  632. They lack personnel, they lack resources, they lack the

  633. infrastructure, they lack the budget.

  634. They cannot overcome those obstacles.

  635. He more than anybody else there except 11 other people.

  636. Knows that but when Caleb says let us go we be well able.

  637. The difference is is that his we is taken to an account somebody

  638. that the other we is not see Caleb is looking at the

  639. situation saying OK yeah they got giants and he looks and says

  640. giants, God the rest of them are going giants.

  641. Me. Compared to Goliath, David was

  642. pretty short. Compared to God, Goliath was

  643. pretty short. God brought him down with a

  644. rock, a Pebble and a shepherd boy who used his own sword.

  645. The difference was Caleb when he said we be well able, God was in

  646. that we with God, we can't be stopped with God.

  647. We can take this step of faith off this threshold and he's

  648. already promised I already know what he's going to do.

  649. Let's go do it. I just.

  650. Want to see God drive him out? I want to know what that looks

  651. like to be to just walk onto the battlefield and your enemies are

  652. running away like you're a bee. What does that even?

  653. What does that look like? What does that feel like?

  654. I want to be there. We be well able because God will

  655. fight with us. In chapter 14, Caleb and Joshua

  656. and verse #9 they say this about the, the, the people there.

  657. They said they are bread for us. Their defense is departed from

  658. them and the Lord is with us. Fear them not.

  659. We may be like grasshoppers to them, but you know what

  660. grasshoppers like to eat? Bread.

  661. And their bread. We're going to eat them for

  662. breakfast, guys. That's what it makes me think

  663. of. We're going to eat them for

  664. breakfast because the Lord is with us.

  665. Don't be. Afraid of them?

  666. What do they have that God doesn't have?

  667. Sure. Yeah, the children of Israel are

  668. a bunch of former slaves who just spent a few months

  669. traveling across the wilderness. They're not, they're not battle

  670. hardened soldiers. They haven't lived in a single

  671. place where they fortified against attack.

  672. The city states that lived there in the Canaanites, all these

  673. little groups of people, they were warring with each other.

  674. This was a place, the Canaan land was a place where you would

  675. have to travel through to take goods and stuff up the coast, up

  676. the Mediterranean and up into the north and then back down.

  677. And so there would have been lots of skirmishes and battles.

  678. And so the people there would have been accustomed to battle

  679. like Goliath, if they would have been accustomed to fighting and

  680. going to battle and using weapons of arms that the

  681. children of Israel had none of that.

  682. They, they, they had, they had fought 1 battle.

  683. It was a. Pretty amazing battle.

  684. God stopped the sun in the sky. But they they weren't battle

  685. hardened soldiers. They had God.

  686. That was all they needed to take that step off the threshold.

  687. So Caleb stands up and he quiets the people and he says they're

  688. bred for us, they're depend. Their defense is departed from

  689. them. The Lord is with us.

  690. Fear them. Not the promised land, the

  691. beautiful land. It's right there.

  692. God's perfect will for us. We can do this.

  693. What are you waiting for? Let's move forward.

  694. Well, quickly the other 10. I don't know, They push him out

  695. of the way. Wait, Wait, wait, wait, wait,

  696. wait, wait. Wait, let me tell you.

  697. Yeah, we were there too, Caleb. We know.

  698. What it was like. And they say in verse #31 But

  699. the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up

  700. against the people, for they are stronger than we.

  701. One man described them as this. I thought this was pretty funny,

  702. he said determined to oppressed, determined to depress.

  703. They characterized Canaan as a Jurassic Park inhabited by

  704. humanosauruses who made them look like grasshoppers.

  705. I'm glad you laughed at that, Denny.

  706. Thank you. He likes dinosaurs, so that

  707. might be why. The 10 spies it's interesting to

  708. note their description of the land has changed they started

  709. off by saying, wow, it's a land that floweth with milk and honey

  710. look at the. Fruits.

  711. Look at this. This is awesome.

  712. This is a great land, but there's some there's a problem.

  713. There's some giants there, there's some well fortified

  714. cities there. There's some people who are

  715. strong and great. Now what they say is this in

  716. verse 32, and they brought up an evil report of the land which

  717. they had searched under the children of Israel, saying the

  718. land through which we have gone to search.

  719. It is a land that eateth up the inhabitants.

  720. Thereof, what happened to the land flowing with milk and

  721. honey? How did those giants get to be

  722. so big in a land that eats them up?

  723. How did their? Fortified cities get to be so

  724. big and it's they're contradicting themselves they.

  725. How can they be big and strong in a land that devours them?

  726. And one person commented and said, well, maybe they maybe

  727. they were saying, well, the land devours them because they're

  728. always fighting with each other. But even then they would if they

  729. were constantly fighting, constantly warring with each

  730. other, they would be constantly weakened.

  731. They. Obviously weren't, or there'd be

  732. no reason to be afraid. Of them, the point is that

  733. they've now put on some blinders.

  734. That's what happens when you don't take that step of faith.

  735. You, you, you can see what God has promised.

  736. You know what God has promised. You know what God wants you to

  737. do, but you're afraid to take it.

  738. And suddenly, well, it doesn't really look that good.

  739. I mean, I, I know. That's God's perfect will.

  740. But this, this over here, it really isn't that bad, right?

  741. I mean, Egypt wasn't that bad, was it?

  742. That's what happens in chapter 14.

  743. I mean, guys, I mean, I know that there's big grapes over

  744. there, but you remember the garlic we had back in Egypt?

  745. You guys don't look excited about that at all.

  746. They were, they thought it was better to go back and have

  747. garlic than to go forward and have grapes.

  748. They were completely blinded. Taking your eyes off God and

  749. putting them on your situation will always result in deceiving

  750. yourself, blinding yourself to the blessings of God.

  751. That are right in front of you and they thought Egypt was

  752. better than freedom and they said in verse 31 we be not able

  753. to go up against the people for they are stronger than we are.

  754. As I thought about this and I told you that you know the

  755. story, I wanted to, I wanted to answer the question, why?

  756. Why did this happen? What happened that caused them

  757. to be on the threshold, ready to step into God's perfect will?

  758. And to miss it. And I've already really.

  759. Told you the answer, but I just want to point out some verses

  760. here. Look at verse 27.

  761. And they told him and said, We came unto the land, whither thou

  762. sentest us. They're talking to Moses.

  763. But back at the beginning, who was the one who sent them into

  764. the land? God commissioned that.

  765. Well, Moses, we went to the land that.

  766. You. Sent us to and let me tell you,

  767. it was nice but we can't do it. Well, there's where's God?

  768. Why didn't you say we went to the land that God has brought us

  769. to? Where was he in all of this?

  770. In verse 32 it says this and they brought up an evil report

  771. of the of the land which they had searched under the children

  772. of the of Israel saying the land through which we have gone to

  773. search it. We.

  774. Saw it guys and it's impossible again.

  775. Where was God here was gone back in verse #2 It says this, Send

  776. thou man. This is God speaking, that they

  777. may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children

  778. of Israel. God's already given it, but they

  779. don't seem to remember that. Moses, you sent us there, we saw

  780. it. It can't be done.

  781. Never mind the fact that God said it's already yours.

  782. It's already done. The deeds already signed.

  783. You just got to go in. That's it.

  784. I've already given it to you. Just take the step.

  785. One more verse, verse 22. And they ascended by the South

  786. and came unto Hebron. But what did they see in Hebron?

  787. Only the enemy. I mentioned that already.

  788. That's it. That's all they saw everywhere

  789. they went. God wasn't there with them.

  790. Those 10 spies, All they saw was the enemy, even when they were

  791. standing in a place where they should have remembered.

  792. This is where it all started. After Lot and Abraham parted

  793. ways. The Bible says that Abraham went

  794. to Hebron and made an altar and God promised him, this is going

  795. to be your land. And Abraham purchased a field

  796. there and and a cave, and he was buried there in the promised

  797. land. But where was all of that?

  798. As they passed through Hebron, all they could see was there's

  799. another giant. There's another one.

  800. Wow, look at that city. We're never going to be able to

  801. take that. And they completely erased God.

  802. They looked at the people of the land and saw giants.

  803. They looked at the city and saw high walls and locked gates.

  804. They looked at themselves and saw grasshoppers.

  805. They did not ever once look at their God.

  806. They compared themselves. The 10 spies compared themselves

  807. with the giants and were grasshoppers.

  808. The two spies compared them, the giants, with God, and God was

  809. greater. Caleb's call to go up at once

  810. was based on what God said, not on what they saw.

  811. Hope you catch that. There they were.

  812. They're on the threshold. God said it was in our passage

  813. traverse too. I've given this.

  814. This land is theirs. And Caleb took that and said,

  815. God said, it's mine, let's go. No, he didn't base his decision

  816. about whether or not to take that step on what he saw.

  817. He saw the things that were there.

  818. He saw the obstacles. He saw the giants, he saw the

  819. walled cities. He saw the things that had to be

  820. done to take the promised land. But his decision to take that

  821. step of faith had nothing to do with what he saw.

  822. It was what God said, Let us go up at once, for we are well

  823. able. Well able.

  824. Humanly speaking, the 10 spies were right.

  825. It was an impossible task. Humanly speaking, they could not

  826. take the promised land, they ragtag group of former slaves

  827. against giants like Goliath. They had no chance.

  828. They stood on the threshold of God's perfect will.

  829. I read this, this. I thought this was a great

  830. thought. They stood on the threshold of

  831. God's perfect will and they snatched defeat from the jaws of

  832. victory. Does that sound backwards to

  833. you? That's what they did.

  834. All they had to do was take a step and they were living in

  835. God's perfect will and the enemy was just going to run away.

  836. How hard is it to take a step? Sometimes it's very hard.

  837. Sometimes it's the hardest. Sometimes we get focused on what

  838. you can see. I can't help but think of Peter

  839. walking on water. What happened when he got his

  840. eyes off of the Lord and got his eyes on those waves?

  841. He started sinking. That's what happened.

  842. Man, there they were on the threshold.

  843. All they had to do was take a step.

  844. They missed it. They missed it because they

  845. wrote God off, erased him from the equation, and they only saw

  846. what was right in front of them. They snatched defeat from the

  847. jaws of victory. It's truly a great tragedy to

  848. only ever come close to being in God's perfect will.

  849. I'm going to say that again, it is truly a great tragedy to only

  850. ever come close to being in God's perfect will.

  851. There are no blessings and no promised lands in coming close.

  852. They were close. They were as close as they were

  853. going to get without being in God's perfect will.

  854. And because they didn't take a step of faith for the next 40

  855. years, all the people who were of the age where they could make

  856. a decision, they died walking around in a wilderness and they

  857. never got to see the promised land.

  858. There are no blessings in no promised land in coming close.

  859. They were right there, but they were only living.

  860. They were living only by what they saw, and because what they

  861. saw was hard and they were afraid, they turned back.

  862. Tonight, will you live by what you see or by what God has said?

  863. He's made some promises in His Word.

  864. We have the choice, all of us standing on the threshold of

  865. God's perfect will and we look and we say, man, it's it's

  866. really hard to live for God in this world today.

  867. It's really hard to share the gospel with people today.

  868. It's scary. I don't know how they're going

  869. to respond. I might even lose my job.

  870. What has God said? Am I going to take that step or

  871. am I going to that's too much, I can't do that.

  872. You might never get that chance again.

  873. That blessing that you were going to get.

  874. It may never come back. It didn't for them.

  875. It was gone. Their children didn't get to

  876. enjoy a Hornet that drove the people out.

  877. Their children had to fight for every inch of that promised

  878. land. Was God with them?

  879. Yes. Did God forgive?

  880. Yes, of course he did. He was still with them for the

  881. next 40 years as he led them around the wilderness.

  882. But it was still not a promised land.

  883. It was still a wilderness. You might say, you know what,

  884. this sin, sin that I've been fighting, it's just too much.

  885. I'm never going to get victory over this sin.

  886. God already said that He's made a way of.

  887. Escape, he's already said. If you're saved tonight, you've

  888. been freed from the power of sin.

  889. Are you going to live based on what you see?

  890. I know me. I know what my besetting sin is,

  891. and I know that there are times I look at it and I think there's

  892. no way. He's already said he's made the

  893. way. Am I gonna take a step of faith

  894. or am I gonna turn back? The children of Israel did.

  895. I'm never going to get out of this, this problem with my

  896. marriage. It's just my marriage seems to

  897. be falling apart. My husband, my wife.

  898. What? I don't know what to do.

  899. I don't know how to live. I don't know what, I just don't.

  900. Know have you factored God into that equation?

  901. Your children, our country? You say I tried it God's way.

  902. I just, I just, it just didn't seem like it worked.

  903. Are you going to be faithful? Are you going to take that step

  904. of faith? God called Abraham to leave his

  905. land and go to a land and he didn't even tell him where he

  906. was going. He just said start walking when

  907. you get there, I'll tell you. And that's how we got here was

  908. because one man took a step of faith.

  909. I had no idea where it was going.

  910. You might have a person you've been praying for, man.

  911. This person, my, my brother, my sister, my, my mom, my dad, my

  912. grandma, my grandpa, my friend. Are they ever going to get

  913. saved? Are you going to be faithful or

  914. are you going to look at it and say it's a lost cause?

  915. I'm not even going to try anymore.

  916. It's a tragedy to stand on the threshold of God's perfect will

  917. for your life and turn away from it, to be close and miss it, to

  918. miss the blessings of God. You could be on the very edge of

  919. God's perfect will tonight and you could look at it and say

  920. this is impossible. There's no way, and humanly

  921. you'd be right. It's impossible, just like it

  922. was for the children of Israel. Can I tell you tonight, stop

  923. looking at the giants, Factor God back in, trust what He said

  924. in His Word and take a step. You will not regret it.

  925. I can tell you what you will regret.

  926. You'll regret wandering around in a wilderness wondering what

  927. those grapes might have tasted like if only you're taking a

  928. step. You know what's really another

  929. thing that's sad? In Numbers 14, after God tells

  930. them they're going to wander in the wilderness, they try to go.

  931. Like, all right, got it. You were right.

  932. We're going to go take the promised land.

  933. Remember what I told you? It was too late.

  934. God told them don't go, it's too late.

  935. And they tried to go. They tried to fight their way in

  936. and they lost. People died, they missed it.

  937. They stood on the threshold so close and missed the blessing of

  938. God because they looked at what was in front of them and said

  939. there'd be giants. They're huge.

  940. We're grasshoppers and they're in these walled cities and we're

  941. just, nobody's from Egypt. And they just completely rode

  942. off their God and what he had promised them that word.

  943. Nevertheless, they wrote off everything that He had just done

  944. for them over the last few months back in Egypt, as they

  945. came across the wilderness at Mount Sinai, they wrote it all

  946. off. They forgot it.

  947. They decided it was better to have garlic than grapes.

  948. The Bible. Says we live.

  949. Although I'm sorry, when we live by what we see then we will

  950. always fall short of God's will. The Bible says in Hebrews 11/6.

  951. Without faith it is impossible to please him, for he that

  952. cometh to God must believe that he is.

  953. And there's more I know. If we compare ourselves to those

  954. giant situations, then we truly are grasshoppers.

  955. The situation is hopeless. But if we compare our situations

  956. to our God and we trust what He has said, and we remember how

  957. faithful He has been, don't just.

  958. Nevertheless, could you imagine that one word used to write off

  959. the entire book of Exodus? Have you read what happens in

  960. the book of Exodus? There's some amazing things in

  961. the book of Exodus and they wrote off the entire book with

  962. one word. Nevertheless, because of what

  963. was right in front of them. Don't say like those 10 spies we

  964. beat hot Abel and turn back from God's perfect and best and

  965. blessed will for your life. Don't try to go back to Egypt,

  966. the place of bondage. Trust what God has already said

  967. about your situation and be like Caleb.

  968. Let us go up at once. Let's let's do it.

  969. Let's take another one. We be well able, not because of

  970. me or because of you, because of God, we be well able.

  971. Thank you for listening to the sermon from the pulpit of
