  1. Oftentimes, people don't like to be told to pursue

  2. holiness and godliness in their lives. Now, there's

  3. various reasons for this. People don't necessarily

  4. enjoy being exhorted unto holiness of life. People

  5. don't always enjoy being exhorted to godliness

  6. and the pursuit of godliness and godly traits

  7. and godly characteristics in their life. And

  8. there are several reasons for this. I believe

  9. that some of the reasons are people think genuinely

  10. that for someone to tell them to pursue and seek

  11. out holiness and godliness, that is legalistic.

  12. And moralistic. Don't tell me that I should seek

  13. holiness in my life. God's going to do that in

  14. my life. God's going to bring that about in my

  15. life. Some people, I think, genuinely believe

  16. that it's dogmatic and arrogant for one sinner

  17. to tell another sinner that they should be holy.

  18. That they should be godly in their life. I think

  19. that there's other reasons that people don't

  20. like this. I think people have personal insecurities

  21. with their own struggles, their own difficulties,

  22. their own hardships, and their own soul. And

  23. because of those, they don't like being told

  24. that. Because of that expectation. Or because

  25. of that standard of Christian living that they're

  26. being urged onto. Maybe besetting sins. Or struggles

  27. that people cannot or are unwilling to give up

  28. or to let go of. And if I can't let go of this,

  29. if I can't overcome this in my own life, then

  30. how in the world could anybody else overcome

  31. this and have freedom from sin in such a way?

  32. Can anybody really truly walk in holiness and

  33. godliness in their life? Oftentimes I think that

  34. messy grace in antinomian theology really has

  35. crept into the church more than we like to admit.

  36. We're all sinners. You're a sinner. I'm a sinner.

  37. And it's okay to be sinners. I'm imperfect, you're

  38. imperfect, and this is the perfect place for

  39. us to come together. And it's okay to be imperfect.

  40. It's okay to not be okay. There's no standard.

  41. There's no expectation. For godliness and holiness,

  42. God is not a God that is given a holy and a righteous

  43. law that reflects His own character and His own

  44. goodness and that which He loves and that which

  45. He... A lot of times, I believe people don't

  46. like being told to pursue holiness and godliness

  47. because of emotionally driven hermeneutics. Emotionally

  48. driven ideas about what is right and what is

  49. wrong in their life, in the church, and what

  50. is expected of them in their life. For instance,

  51. I believe people rationalize away godliness and

  52. holiness because they say, well, when Paul tells,

  53. when Peter tells his readers, now for this very

  54. reason also, applying all diligence in your faith,

  55. supply, moral excellence, and so on and so on

  56. and so on. And then he even says, for if these

  57. qualities are yours and are increasing, meaning

  58. they have to be yours if you're a believer. And

  59. they have to be increasing if you're a believer.

  60. When Paul says that, he's talking to those first

  61. century Christians. He's talking to those really

  62. spiritual people. When Peter says that, he's

  63. not talking about me. He doesn't understand my

  64. life. He doesn't understand what's expected of

  65. me in my life. He doesn't understand the commitments

  66. in my life, what's required of me in my life.

  67. He doesn't understand what I'm going through

  68. and what I have to do in my life to just survive.

  69. But brothers and sisters, this applies to every

  70. single Christian, every single where, and every

  71. single time. We are the same. As Peter's readers,

  72. brothers and sisters, We are people saved by

  73. grace. We are sinners saved by grace. And that

  74. means that this exhortation and this admonition,

  75. this command on the life of the believer, is

  76. applicable to every single believer that's present

  77. in this room. There's going to be difficulties

  78. and hardships along the way, along the path of

  79. godliness. But brothers and sisters, because

  80. of all these reasons, I think that's all the

  81. more cause to teach and instruct on these things.

  82. Because of all these reasons, that's all the

  83. more cause to teach on the pursuit of godliness

  84. and holiness. Because we need it all that much

  85. more. Because we don't like it. Because we don't

  86. want to hear it. But we need to hear it. I need

  87. to hear and I need to be encouraged. I need to

  88. be exhorted to pursue Christlikeness in my life.

  89. And you, brothers and sisters, need to be exhorted

  90. unto Christlikeness in your life as those who

  91. are recipients of the blessed grace of God. So

  92. Peter encourages us to pursue a godly life in

  93. verses 5 through 11. Consider first with me the

  94. basis for pursuing a godly life. This is important

  95. that we get this right, isn't it? On what basis

  96. can a person say, pursue holiness? Pursue Christ.

  97. What is the basis? The text says now, for this

  98. very reason also. Peter's referring to what's

  99. come before. He's referring to what he's been

  100. speaking of. He's referring to what we've been

  101. examining the last several weeks. He's referring

  102. to the provisions of God for life and godliness.

  103. Do you remember in verse 3, he says, seeing that

  104. his divine power has granted to us everything

  105. pertaining to life and godliness. Brothers and

  106. sisters, God has given us graciously everything

  107. for life and godliness. That's the basis. God's

  108. work, God's provision, God's grace in the life

  109. of the believer. What he provides and what he

  110. gives and what he supplies and how he sustains

  111. for the Christian, for those with faith. It's

  112. the provisions of God. But it's not just the

  113. provisions of God that are the basis of the pursuit

  114. of a godly life. It's the promises of God. What

  115. do we see? We read in verse 4, For by these he

  116. has granted to us his precious and magnificent

  117. promises, so that by them you may become partakers

  118. of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption

  119. that is in the world by lusts. It's not just

  120. the provision of God for life and godliness,

  121. and that he's granted and he's given everything

  122. that we need. But it's the fact of the promises

  123. of the gospel and their application in the life

  124. of God's people. It's the reality, brothers and

  125. sisters, that God truly, genuinely intervenes

  126. in the life of a sinner, and then He gives them

  127. eyes to see, and He gives them ears to hear.

  128. He calls them by the gospel and by His Spirit.

  129. And that when He does that, brothers and sisters,

  130. He gives us a new heart, a new nature. He drastically

  131. changes us and He drastically transforms us so

  132. that our minds and our hearts and our longings

  133. are all renewed. They're all changed. They're

  134. all adjusted. They're reoriented towards God.

  135. And we have this desire, this longing for holiness

  136. and godliness in our life. We see... That in

  137. these promises, God provides us with certain

  138. realities so that we can pursue holiness. So

  139. that we can pursue godliness. He gives us ability

  140. to pursue it. By giving us a new nature and a

  141. new heart. Now, that does not mean... That it's

  142. just us? Because as God's grace calls us, brothers

  143. and sisters, we must never forget that God's

  144. grace sustains us and preserves us even in our

  145. pursuit of godliness and holiness. It's still

  146. of grace. The very reason that we are new creatures

  147. in Christ, the very reason that when God calls

  148. us and we believe on Christ God -given faith,

  149. that's a whole -souled movement. That's something

  150. we do. God doesn't believe for us. We believe.

  151. But why can we believe? And how do we believe?

  152. Because He has given us a new heart, and His

  153. strength by His Spirit causes us to believe.

  154. It's His energy. It's His power. It's His influence

  155. by the divine Spirit of God. My flesh... Has

  156. no power. And no ability. And no desire. To seek

  157. after a holy God. Do you know why? Because my

  158. flesh is antithetical to holiness. When I'm referring

  159. to it with reference to sin. A remnant of sin

  160. will not ever. Or indwelling sin. In a person

  161. will never seek out a holy God. Will never seek

  162. out to be like the Lord Jesus Christ. But when

  163. the work of God, the grace of God intervenes

  164. in a person's life and changes them and transforms

  165. them like we saw in Ephesians chapter 4. Like

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  166. we see in Romans chapter 6 where we're dead to

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  167. sin. The old man is crucified, the old man is

  168. dead, and we're alive unto God. And we can now

  169. reckon sin as dead to us? That's all because

  170. of God's grace, God's work in our life. So very

  171. clearly, we see that it's grace that is the foundation

  172. for any pursuit of godliness. in our lives. It's

  173. God's work in us that is the basis for any work

  174. in our lives. We have to remember that Peter's

  175. talking to, he's writing to who, brothers and

  176. sisters? Those who have received a faith of the

  177. same kind. Peter's not speaking to unbelievers

  178. and saying, be godly. He's not writing to unbelievers

  179. and saying, seek out holiness in Christ's likeness.

  180. No, he's writing to those with faith. He's writing

  181. to those who are believers, those who are indwelt

  182. by the Spirit of God, and those who have experienced

  183. the grace of God at work in their life. He's

  184. writing to them. There's nothing dogmatic. There's

  185. nothing legalistic. There's nothing moralistic.

  186. about a Christian, a believer, indwelt by the

  187. Holy Spirit being told to pursue holiness and

  188. godliness. In reality, brothers and sisters,

  189. we have to pursue those things. We must pursue

  190. those things. So, if one is to pursue godliness,

  191. what must precede it? Grace. Grace must precede

  192. godliness, right? But brothers and sisters, listen.

  193. What must follow grace? The pursuit of godliness.

  194. If grace comes in, godliness must be sought.

  195. If grace comes in, then brothers and sisters,

  196. godliness will be pursued. It's not as though

  197. God saves us and his work in us is ineffective,

  198. right? It's not as though God transforms us and

  199. then deserts us and leaves us to ourselves and

  200. all of a sudden it's all about the flesh and

  201. finishing with the flesh. No, brothers and sisters,

  202. the gospel is effective and powerful not just

  203. to convert us and regenerate us, but the gospel

  204. is effective. to transform us throughout the

  205. entirety of our lives in sanctification. To continue

  206. to renew us and transform us from glory to glory.

  207. This is an indiscriminate command and exhortation

  208. that Peter's giving to believers, isn't it? He's

  209. not saying if you're really, really spiritual,

  210. apply all diligence. and add these to your faith.

  211. He's not saying, if you're in the first century,

  212. then apply these to your faith. He's saying,

  213. believer, you with faith, you who have the Spirit

  214. of God, you who know Christ, you who love the

  215. Lord Jesus Christ, you who have been born again,

  216. you who have faith and repentance, pursue and

  217. seek out these things. Grace is the basis for

  218. pursuing a godly life, brothers and sisters.

  219. But we also have to consider what believers are

  220. called to pursue. When we say pursue a godly

  221. life, what exactly are we speaking of? What does

  222. the text tell us that we ought to be pursuing,

  223. that we ought to be supplying, and we ought to

  224. be diligently seeking to bring about and make

  225. a close and intimate part of our life? Well,

  226. we see in verses 5 through 7, this list, we could

  227. say, of Christian virtues and characteristics.

  228. He says, now for this very reason also, applying

  229. all diligence. In your faith, supply moral excellence.

  230. In your moral excellence, knowledge. And in your

  231. knowledge, self -control. And in your self -control,

  232. perseverance. And in your perseverance, godliness.

  233. And in your godliness, brotherly kindness. And

  234. in brotherly kindness, love. That is what Peter

  235. is exhorting his readers to seek out. To pursue.

  236. These traits that he lists. Now, when we consider

  237. these traits, Peter gives seven of them. He says

  238. in your faith, personal trust of Christ. He says

  239. moral excellence. Most likely he's speaking about

  240. moral virtue, moral goodness, integrity, and

  241. consistency, honesty, and purity in one's life

  242. in a well -rounded capacity across the board

  243. in how we see things and how we act and how we

  244. talk and how we speak. Knowledge. He's speaking

  245. of the will of God and discerning the will of

  246. God. Not so much just the accumulation of knowledge.

  247. Self -control. The ability to restrain ourselves.

  248. The ability to restrain ourselves when the flesh

  249. rears its head and seeks to lash out. Self -control

  250. or temperance. Perseverance. This trait. where

  251. we press on, we continue on, we continue moving

  252. forward in spite of difficulties, we don't give

  253. up, we don't throw our hands to the side and

  254. say, I'm done. We press on. He says godliness,

  255. connecting it to what he said previously, a devout

  256. religious piety that's inwardly driven by the

  257. heart that seeks to honor the Lord Jesus Christ.

  258. brotherly kindness, talking about a familial

  259. Christian love. Now there's one that's relevant

  260. for us, isn't it, brothers and sisters? We're

  261. sitting next to brothers and sisters. We're sitting

  262. next to family. And Peter's exhorting us to love

  263. one another like brothers and sisters. Do you

  264. brothers and sisters know why I say brothers

  265. and sisters fairly often? In our conversation

  266. or from the pulpit? Because it's a term of endearment.

  267. It means I don't talk to everybody like this.

  268. It means I see you differently than I see the

  269. world. It means I know that Christ has died for

  270. you and he's died for me because you've made

  271. a profession of faith. Therefore, I recognize

  272. you as a brother or a sister. in Christ. That

  273. changes how we relate to one another. That changes

  274. how we look at one another. Peter's saying, pursue

  275. that out. He's saying that that is what we ought

  276. to be seeking in our lives. And then he culminates

  277. the list with love. Unselfish, self -denying,

  278. sacrificial love. That love which puts others

  279. first. Now this is the last one, but we also

  280. know this is often one of the most difficult

  281. of them. It's the determination to do good to

  282. our fellow man. Regardless of what it costs us.

  283. Regardless of how difficult it is. We will do

  284. good to our fellow man. Now, I think there's

  285. a few things it's important we recognize about

  286. this list that Peter has given us. I think we

  287. need to recognize that there's no significant

  288. order or progression in them. Other than the

  289. fact that it starts with faith and ends with

  290. love. Other than that, I think they're just connected

  291. and linked together. But it is significant. that

  292. every single quality listed is in accompaniment

  293. to faith. That means that these other qualities

  294. are the product, are the fruit, the result of

  295. faith. That means that when I seek out moral

  296. excellence, it has to be in That means that when

  297. I persevere, it needs to be in faith. That's

  298. what distinguishes it and separates it from carnality,

  299. from carnal effort and carnal exertion. The fact

  300. and the reality that these, in a sense, are all

  301. an accompaniment and the fruit of faith, and

  302. they all work toward love. All of these things

  303. serve the purpose of loving our fellow man and

  304. the church of the living God in particular. These

  305. are universal and necessary qualities according

  306. to 2 Peter verse 8. For if these qualities are

  307. yours and are increasing, they render you neither

  308. useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge

  309. of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christians will...

  310. have these qualities. Those with faith will enjoy

  311. these blessed graces in their life. And these

  312. things must spring from grace. The reason being,

  313. these are not things that we work up, we create,

  314. or we bring about on our own. These are part

  315. of all those things pertaining to life and godliness

  316. that God has given to the believer. He's already

  317. given us the seed, we could say, in faith of

  318. brotherly love. Of moral excellence. So it's

  319. not like we're producing this. We're exerting

  320. these things. We're working with the grace of

  321. God that's inside of us to bring them out and

  322. to manifest them and make them more evident in

  323. our lives. They're from God. They're not from

  324. the flesh. This is part of being made partakers

  325. of the divine nature. These are distinctly Christian

  326. virtues. He's not talking about worldly morality.

  327. Peter's talking about godliness and holiness

  328. in the life of a believer. This means, and this

  329. shows us, brothers and sisters, what God wants

  330. his people to seek after. This shows us what

  331. God wants us to pursue in our lives, doesn't

  332. it? And what do they have to do with? Who we

  333. are? And how we live. Why? Because of the grace

  334. of God. God is telling us, Peter is telling us,

  335. that there is a particular manner of life that

  336. believers in Jesus Christ are to be looking to

  337. be like. That they are to be seeking out and

  338. pursuing in their lives. It's this life characterized

  339. by these realities. These traits and these characteristics.

  340. It shows us what God values in the life of his

  341. people. God values and God wants his people to

  342. seek out moral excellence, perseverance, knowledge,

  343. brotherly love, and that self -sacrificial, self

  344. -denying love, that agape love. He wants us to

  345. be people who are characterized by self -control

  346. and all these traits. It's important for us to

  347. understand, brothers and sisters, God's primary

  348. concern for your life and for my life, as those

  349. who have been recipients of the grace of God,

  350. is not what you do in life. Meaning, you're a

  351. bus driver. You're a pastor, a preacher. You're

  352. a school teacher. You're a real estate agent.

  353. You're a dentist. You're a tech worker, a farmer.

  354. It doesn't matter. Listen, that's not God's primary

  355. concern in your life. His primary concern is

  356. not your wealth, your finance, your place, your

  357. affluence, or your position in life. Do you know

  358. what God is preeminently concerned about in your

  359. life? Do you know what God is preeminently concerned

  360. about with your soul? With your life that He

  361. has given you? Godliness. Holiness in your life.

  362. Who you are and how you live unto His glory.

  363. That's His concern. For his people who have been

  364. given his grace. He wants them to live in such

  365. a way that they adorn their faith with these

  366. blessed realities. In a sense, he wants his people

  367. to beautify the gospel of Jesus Christ with their

  368. very lives. To show off. What the gospel has

  369. done to them to show off what the gospel is doing

  370. to them. That means, brothers and sisters, we

  371. say something about the gospel in our self -control

  372. or our absence of self -control. That means that

  373. you say something in your life about God and

  374. the gospel and your love or your absence of love.

  375. And your brotherly love or the absence and neglect

  376. of brotherly love. And your perseverance or your

  377. despair. You say something about the gospel of

  378. Jesus Christ and its power and its effect in

  379. your very souls. What is your life saying about

  380. the gospel? What is your pursuit of godliness

  381. and holiness in your life? How does your treatment

  382. of your brothers and sisters, how does that talk

  383. about the gospel? What does it say about what

  384. Christ has done on the cross? And the power of

  385. the Spirit of God at work in you. We're always

  386. saying something. Everybody's always saying something.

  387. And the way they talk, and the way they dress,

  388. and the way they look, and how they act, and

  389. how they treat others, and what they do. Everybody's

  390. always saying something. They're either beautifying

  391. the gospel of Jesus Christ, or they're saying

  392. something else about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  393. Our lives should be living reflections of the

  394. efficacious power of the gospel at work in our

  395. very souls. Our lives should be living testimonies

  396. to the work of Christ and his grace and his mercy

  397. and the transforming power of that grace and

  398. that mercy in our lives. That's what Peter wants

  399. us to do. He wants us to pursue a life that glorifies

  400. God by reflecting the blessed gospel in our lives.

  401. That's what we need to seek out, brothers and

  402. sisters. For morality's sake. But because we

  403. want to honor our Lord. If you're a believer,

  404. I know you want to honor the Lord Jesus Christ.

  405. I know you have the desire and the longing to

  406. please your Heavenly Father. This is how we do

  407. it. We seek out and we pursue these realities.

  408. And brothers and sisters, this is a life of joy.

  409. This is the life of contentment. This is the

  410. life of satisfaction and fulfillment. This is

  411. the life of peace. You know, a lot of times,

  412. the Puritans get really, really bad reps. Now,

  413. there was a small minority of Puritans that should

  414. get a bad rep. Very small. The mass of the Puritans.

  415. Yes, they pursued godliness. And they pursued

  416. holiness. But listen, brothers and sisters, they

  417. were very, very happy people. They were very,

  418. very joyful people. They loved the Lord Jesus

  419. Christ. They desired to please Him and honor

  420. Him. They experienced a deep joy in their souls

  421. that we may know nothing about at times. Why?

  422. Because they were so consecrated to the very

  423. purpose of being godly and holy. If we want to

  424. experience true joy in our lives, if you want

  425. contentment and peace in your life, if you want

  426. to know what it means to be happy in your soul

  427. and not miserable all the time, then you need

  428. to seek out the Lord Jesus Christ and to imitate

  429. Him and to be like Him. and to find satisfaction

  430. and peace and hope and confidence in him by faith.

  431. This is very different from what the world tells

  432. us to go after, isn't it? What does the world

  433. tell us to do? What does the world tell us to

  434. seek out? This is especially relevant for young

  435. people. What does the world and the culture say

  436. to go after in your life? What you value. What's

  437. important to you. What makes you feel good? What

  438. guarantees your success in life? What gives you

  439. the most affluence and influence in life? Where

  440. are you going to have the most impact on society

  441. and culture? What's going to give you the best

  442. position and best place? What's going to satisfy

  443. your... wants the most. That's not what Peter

  444. tells us to go after. Peter says to go after

  445. that which God values. Peter says seek out and

  446. pursue that which is dear to the very heart of

  447. the Lord Jesus Christ. Holiness and godliness.

  448. Those are the things that Christians ought to

  449. pursue and seek out with all their very being.

  450. Those things that God tells us to go after. Now

  451. consider how we are to pursue godliness. This

  452. one is fairly simple from the text. How do we

  453. go after these things? The text says in verse

  454. 5, now for this very reason also, applying all

  455. diligence and your faith supply. I'm sorry. In

  456. your faith, supply moral excellence. Believers

  457. must apply all diligence in their pursuit of

  458. a godly life. We know what we are to seek. We

  459. know what God wants us to go after, don't we,

  460. brothers and sisters? Knowing that, understanding

  461. who God wants us to be, how ought we to then

  462. live? How ought we to prioritize our life, our

  463. energy, our time, our days? We have to live in

  464. such a way that we're wise and not unwise. Peter

  465. is very clear. He says that we have to make every

  466. effort. What does he mean by this? Every single

  467. one of us clearly understands what this means.

  468. Every single one of us knows what it means to

  469. apply all diligence. And do you know how I know

  470. every single person already understands this?

  471. Because the people I know in this room are very

  472. hard workers. And if they say to their child,

  473. or to an employee, or to a staff member, Or to

  474. somebody they're supervising or overseeing, somebody

  475. they're in charge of, and they say, now, apply

  476. all diligence in this task. Apply all diligence

  477. in this function, in this capacity, in this duty,

  478. in this role. What do you mean by that? Do you

  479. mean it's okay? Let it fall to the wayside. Neglect

  480. it. And then take up the opportunity when you

  481. get a chance and whenever you feel like it. No.

  482. I certainly don't mean that whenever I tell my

  483. child that. Does it mean, brothers and sisters,

  484. give it a half -hearted effort and then stop?

  485. No. Brothers and sisters, it means make every

  486. effort and take every opportunity to reach that

  487. goal which is included in the command. Do everything

  488. within your power to see that this comes about.

  489. Give it everything you've got. Because that's

  490. what I want. Because that's what's good for you.

  491. Because that's what I long for your life. Brothers

  492. and sisters, we have a Heavenly Father who loves

  493. us and cares more for us than we can ever fathom.

  494. And He longs for us to know what it's like to

  495. be holy and godly in our life. And He says, apply

  496. all diligence in this matter. Take every opportunity.

  497. Make every effort. That means give all the time

  498. that you have and all the time that you can.

  499. Empty yourself. Give yourself to this purpose

  500. in your life. I want you to do this. That's what

  501. we ought to hear in this calling and this exhortation.

  502. It's a command, a call, an exhortation, an admonition

  503. of love, brothers and sisters. Our Father in

  504. heaven loves us dearly, and He knows that we

  505. need to be holy and godly in our life so that

  506. we enjoy contentment and peace and love, and

  507. we know Him more than we do now. We have to give

  508. it everything we've got. This includes activity

  509. and the will. We can't apply all diligence. without

  510. exercising some resolve in our minds, in our

  511. wills. I think Peter's telling us, when it comes

  512. to matters of your faith, be strong -willed.

  513. I think he's telling us, be a go -getter when

  514. it comes to growing in grace. Give yourself to

  515. this purpose. Do everything that you possibly

  516. can. To achieve this goal. To seek it out. And

  517. to go after it. But he also says. That the way

  518. that we pursue this. Is that believers must supply.

  519. Or they must add. These qualities to their faith.

  520. This is why he says in verse 5. Supplying all

  521. diligence. Now this word. assumes the presence

  522. of these qualities already. And he's calling

  523. us to exercise and practice these things. It

  524. was used in Greek literature for various different

  525. purposes, but the primary use was for a patron

  526. or a benefactor that loved music and orchestra.

  527. That they would come alongside that orchestra

  528. and that team and they would provide funding

  529. or donations or they would furnish instruments

  530. so that the orchestra could be well -rounded

  531. and make the most beautiful music that it could

  532. potentially make. Peter's saying supply diligence

  533. and effort. Supply these qualities in such a

  534. way that you show off the gospel in your life.

  535. And the beauty of the gospel in your life. That

  536. we show off the work of the Lord. Now, the reality

  537. is, brothers and sisters, that we go after, we

  538. seek after, we pursue, and we give diligence

  539. to those things which matter most in our lives.

  540. We apply all diligence to those things which

  541. matter most to us. We apply all diligence to

  542. those things our heart's affections are set on

  543. the most. We make time for those things which

  544. matter most. We open up our schedule. We control.

  545. We persevere in those things. We do everything

  546. necessary to accomplish those goals in our lives

  547. because they matter to us, because they're meaningful

  548. to us. Brothers and sisters, we are called to

  549. give all diligence and all activity and all exertion,

  550. everything in our power and our control, to lay

  551. hold. of Christ more in our lives. Everything.

  552. That is to be our priority and our values. We

  553. are to go after that which God loves the most.

  554. We are to go after those things which He's telling

  555. us to go after. And that means that we may have

  556. to neglect or lay aside some of the things we

  557. like so much. If we want to lay hold of Christ

  558. more and more in our lives and to be closer and

  559. closer to Him in union by faith and have the

  560. Spirit of God working more in us than brothers

  561. and sisters, let other things that are of lesser

  562. value fall to the wayside that you might lay

  563. hold of Christ more and more in your life. Let

  564. go of those things in the pursuit. of holiness

  565. and godliness in your lives to honor the Lord

  566. Jesus Christ. There are certain things in our

  567. lives that are going to have no eternal impact

  568. on our very souls. There are certain things in

  569. our lives that we will never take with us when

  570. we die. Listen, brothers and sisters. There are

  571. eternal things which have eternal impacts on

  572. our souls and on those around us. Give yourselves

  573. to those realities. Those things which will perpetually

  574. remain because they are of God. What other things

  575. fall to the wayside? What matters most to you?

  576. What's most important to your soul? Now, in our

  577. pursuits of those things that mean so much to

  578. us in our lives, we use every method and every

  579. means to obtain them, don't we? Lawful methods

  580. and lawful means. God forbid no one in here would

  581. use unlawful methods to obtain that which they

  582. want in life. But if we want... To pursue godliness

  583. in our life. If we want to grow in grace and

  584. knowledge, and to know the Lord Jesus Christ,

  585. you know how we do that, brothers and sisters?

  586. We take advantage of the means that God has given

  587. to us to bring those things about. The Word of

  588. God. We have to be people that live in the Word.

  589. We have to be people that love the Word, that

  590. read the Word and study the Word and look to

  591. the Word for leadership and guidance in our lives.

  592. We have to make our decisions and make our determinations

  593. in life based on the Word. But brothers and sisters,

  594. God has also given us prayer. We must lay hold

  595. of prayer and go to the Lord in prayer and seek

  596. Him out in prayer and use the means. But brothers

  597. and sisters, He's also given us the local church.

  598. The people of God where we've covenanted together

  599. to walk together as one people in unity and love.

  600. He's given us the ordinances. These are the means

  601. by which we grow in godliness and holiness in

  602. our lives. I want to end. by reading something.

  603. This is the Canons of Dort. It's such a good

  604. section on what we're speaking of. It says this,

  605. For grace is conferred by means of admonition,

  606. such as the one we're reading about in 2 Peter

    2 Peter 1:5–11

  607. 1, verses 5 -11, an admonition. For grace is

  608. conferred by means of admonitions, and the more

  609. readily we perform our duty. the more clearly

  610. this favor of God working in us usually manifests

  611. itself. And the more directly His work is advanced.

  612. To Him alone all the glory, both for the means

  613. and for the saving fruit in efficacy, is forever

  614. due. Amen. Do you know what it's saying there,

  615. brothers and sisters? It's saying that the more

  616. we give ourselves to pursuing godliness and holiness,

  617. the more the grace of God powerfully works in

  618. our souls. The more we seek to be like Christ,

  619. the more His grace works in our very hearts.

  620. Be a people that don't feel as though we have

  621. to dogmatically pursue holiness and godliness.

  622. Brothers and sisters, be a people that recognize

  623. God wants us to be holy and godly and to know

  624. Christ more because he loves us dearly. He cares

  625. for us dearly. And he knows what is best for

  626. our souls.
