  1. Welcome to the Liberty Baptist Sermon Archives.

  2. The message you're about to hear was preached at Liberty Baptist

  3. Church in Easton, MA. You can find out more about us

  4. or contact us at my libertybaptist.org or just look

  5. us up on Facebook. And now we hope that this

  6. message from God's Word will be a blessing to you.

  7. Matthew Chapter 11, if you would in the word of God, please,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  8. Matthew Chapter 11 this morning, as I just alluded to a few

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  9. moments ago, the title of the message today as we look at the

  10. next characteristic of Christ is that Christ is meek.

  11. Christ is meek. You know, if you call a man

  12. knowledgeable, he'll probably be pleased.

  13. If you call a man wise, you'll probably shake your hand.

  14. You call him joyful, he'll probably give you a pat on the

  15. back. But if you call a guy meek,

  16. you'll probably punch you in the mouth just to prove that he's

  17. not meek. That's kind of the way people

  18. feel about meekness, isn't it? I mean, meekness isn't exactly

  19. something that people usually use as a way to, you know, be

  20. kind to somebody. But you know, you know, one of

  21. the things I love about you, you're just so meek.

  22. It's really not something that people would say 1 to another.

  23. But yet we're going to find in our text this morning that it's

  24. not just that Christ is called meek, but that Christ calls

  25. himself meek. And so that means this, there's

  26. got to be something good about it.

  27. There must be something right and righteous about this issue

  28. of meekness, that Christ calls himself meek and lowly of heart.

  29. And so as we go through our series and we continue to go

  30. through looking at these different characteristics, just

  31. as we saw he was healer this week or last week, rather, we're

  32. going to look at this issue of Christ being meek this morning

  33. and why we should be so thrilled that Christ is meek when he

  34. deals with us in our lives. Would you stand pleased for the

  35. reading of God's Word? We're going to read 3 verses

  36. this morning. Matthew Chapter 11, beginning in

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  37. verse #28 And just as we read from Matthew chapter 8 a few

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  38. moments ago, these verses, these 3 verses are also what I would

  39. call some of the pinnacle verses that you will find within the

  40. New Testament, often quoted, often used as a comfort and

  41. encouragement. And you'll see why in just a

  42. moment. If you're not familiar with it.

  43. Matthew Chapter 11 verse #28 says, Come unto me, all you that

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  44. labor, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

  45. Take my yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly

  46. in heart, and you shall find rest unto your souls.

  47. For my yoke is easy and My burden is light.

  48. Now if you have one of those Bibles that have red letters,

  49. you'll find everything that we just read is in red letters,

  50. isn't it? That means that the person who

  51. is speaking is none other than Jesus Christ.

  52. So this is Jesus who says, come unto me all you that labor and

  53. are heavy laden. Remember I just asked a few

  54. moments ago who needed encouragement, maybe a labor.

  55. You're heavy laden. He said, I will give you rest.

  56. Take my yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am meek, I am meek

  57. and lowly in heart. You shall find rest unto your

  58. souls, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

  59. We be seated as we get into the message this morning.

  60. Heavenly Father, we do thank you for Your word.

  61. We thank You for Your great love for us.

  62. We're undeserving of that which we just heard sung a few moments

  63. ago, and we know we're undeserving of it because of

  64. Your word, but yet we know You also give it to us that great

  65. love because of your word. So Lord, as we look at the issue

  66. of Christ being meek this morning, help us to truly

  67. understand what meekness is, understand how it applies to

  68. Christ and how it applies to us as well in our lives.

  69. And we ask it in Jesus name, Amen.

  70. The verses we just read represent some of the most

  71. comforting and beautiful verses that you'll read anywhere in the

  72. Word of God. And nestled right into middle of

  73. these verses is this proclamation that Jesus makes of

  74. himself when He says these 3 words.

  75. I am meek. Now for us to truly understand

  76. how Christ is meek, and I just alluded to a few moments ago, we

  77. need to actually understand what meekness is because a lot of us

  78. don't feel like meekness is a very good quality, certainly not

  79. one that would be applied to Jesus Christ, at least in the

  80. way that we normally think about what meekness is.

  81. Now meekness, if you were to look at it in the dictionary and

  82. really boil it down to what the dictionary would teach, and this

  83. is just about any dictionary looked at several this week that

  84. would try to define what meekness is.

  85. It would really it down to this one word, gentleness.

  86. Gentleness is meekness. Now listen, this is true.

  87. There is no doubt within my mind that meekness and gentleness do

  88. go together. However, just simply saying that

  89. meekness is gentleness does not give the full and total picture

  90. of what meekness is. I have defined it before here in

  91. this church. I've defined it before through

  92. preaching as this, and I believe I'm on solid biblical ground for

  93. saying this, that meekness is not simply gentleness, but

  94. rather meekness is power under control.

  95. I'll say that again. Meekness is not simply

  96. gentleness, but rather meekness is power under control.

  97. We can put it this way, Meekness is not weakness.

  98. And that's really what it comes down to, isn't it?

  99. That's why a lot of us don't like the term meekness, because

  100. we think inherently meekness is weakness and so we don't really

  101. want to think of it anymore. And certainly if Jesus was

  102. considered to be weak, well, he wouldn't have been the savior.

  103. But what you know about the Word of God and what I know about the

  104. Word of God this morning, we can certainly say this.

  105. Jesus was not weak. No, he is all powerful.

  106. No, he has all power within him. And yes, he is not weak, but he

  107. is gentle. And so that leads us to this

  108. understanding that it must be gentleness or power under

  109. control, that those two going together, power and gentleness

  110. together. You know, I think of a fire that

  111. would take place. And, you know, even this time of

  112. year, it's sometimes ironic that there could be large fires that

  113. take place even with all the snow that's around.

  114. But sometimes some of the worst fires can take place during this

  115. time of year. You think of a fire that

  116. ravages, the power of a fire that can RIP through a home.

  117. It's uncontrollable, isn't it? It's unquenchable in a lot of

  118. ways. It will eat up everything that's

  119. around. There's no thought process to

  120. it. It's wild.

  121. It just goes in every direction until it has consumed everything

  122. that it can possibly consume. That is a wildness.

  123. There's no meekness that's involved in that whatsoever.

  124. But maybe a better way for us to think of meekness would be not

  125. weakness, but rather the firefighters that would go and

  126. would take care of that fire. You know, I imagine when that

  127. fire bell rings that they're not just running around going fire,

  128. fire, What do we do? What do we do?

  129. You know, they're not running around like that.

  130. I've never done that church. That was kind of fun.

  131. They're not running or what do we do?

  132. There's an orderliness to what takes place Immediately the fire

  133. bell rings. They get to the trucks, they get

  134. to the fire. There's a procedure to getting

  135. the equipment that they need out to hooking up to the water, from

  136. going into the home, from going to place to place.

  137. There's a lot of power that those firefighters have, but

  138. that power is different than the power of the fire.

  139. This is power that is under control.

  140. Every movement, every thought, every action has discipline and

  141. control. And you could make the argument

  142. that those firefighters serving in the face of those wild flames

  143. are the ones who really exemplify what true meekness is

  144. all about. And wouldn't that say what our

  145. Savior is? Wouldn't that explain to us who

  146. our Savior is? Because Jesus Christ is not

  147. weak. Jesus Christ is not one who has

  148. no power, no, but rather Jesus Christ has power which was and

  149. is under his control. Now, there's a passage that can

  150. really help us to understand this.

  151. So put your ribbon here in Matthew Chapter 11, if you

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  152. happen to have one. If not, put your finger in there

  153. for just a minute. We'll go back to it.

  154. But go to 2nd Corinthians chapter #10.

  155. Second Corinthians chapter #10 you can go a couple 100 pages

  156. maybe in your Bible here or there ahead to 2nd Corinthians

  157. chapter #10 you're not sure where that is right after First

  158. Corinthians. All right, you got that.

  159. All right, good. Second Corinthians chapter #10

  160. And Paul says this. Now I, Paul myself, beseech you

  161. by the meekness and gentleness of Christ.

  162. So here it is, the word gentleness.

  163. There it's associated with meekness.

  164. No one is trying to deny that here.

  165. Who in presence and base among you but be absent and bold

  166. toward you. But I beseech you that I may not

  167. be bold when I am present with that confidence that we'll stop

  168. right there. Paul is ascribing to himself as

  169. he is writing to the people of Corinth, He says, I, I want to

  170. talk to you with the meekness of Christ.

  171. But as soon as he says that he also associates some other words

  172. as well. So as Paul is dealing with the

  173. people of Corinthus meekness, he is also dealing with them well,

  174. obviously in gentleness. That's number one, but he also

  175. deals with them in humility. Do you see where it says he says

  176. who in presence and base among you, meaning this, that Paul

  177. says when I'm among you, I have humility.

  178. When I'm among you, I don't act as I'm above you or I'm better

  179. than you. He says when I'm among you, I

  180. act with humility. That's part of meekness.

  181. And wouldn't that again describe who Jesus Christ is, that he was

  182. the humble one who humbled himself to come from the throne

  183. of heaven to be able to be with sinful man and walk this earth

  184. and die on the cross. What humility?

  185. Who's ever been more humble than our Savior?

  186. But he also says this, but being absent and bold toward you.

  187. So this means that Paul says you can have meekness and boldness

  188. at the same time. A lot of times the idea we have

  189. of meekness, I think of someone who's kind of mousy and kind of

  190. goes around corners and maybe talks really quiet so that

  191. nobody knows anything that's going on.

  192. But Jesus Christ was meek and he turned over tables.

  193. Jesus Christ was meek, and he called the Pharisees Vipers and

  194. whited sepulchers. Could we put it this way that

  195. Jesus Christ, even in His meekness, was bold?

  196. But it wasn't brashness. It wasn't out of control like

  197. our boldness often can be. No, Jesus Christ in His meekness

  198. showed power under control, which gave what?

  199. Give confidence. Verse #2 I beseech you that I

  200. may not be bold when I'm present with that confidence, the idea

  201. that this is not a cockiness, that Jesus Christ, when we put

  202. it this way, knew who He was and that as such, He showed and

  203. exemplified these things to those who He was around.

  204. Now this isn't my message this morning, but that spirit of

  205. meekness is the way we're supposed to live.

  206. Wow, that didn't go over well. The spirit of meekness is how

  207. we're supposed to live with gentleness, humility, boldness

  208. and confidence in who confidence in me.

  209. I have no confidence in my flesh.

  210. My confidence is in him. And we're called to have this

  211. type of meekness within our lives as well.

  212. And again, that's not my message this morning because the message

  213. is about Christ is meek and how that applies to us.

  214. But I do think it's important for us to take a moment and say,

  215. yes, we should be meek as well even as Christ is meek because

  216. let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.

  217. Now, last week we saw that Christ was healer, and our

  218. understanding of this was broaden not just by looking at

  219. the word heal, but also looking at the text around it.

  220. I want to be careful when we're in this series that we're not

  221. just taking one word and plucking it out and then just

  222. going to wherever we want in the Bible to try to make our own

  223. connections. No, those words are there in

  224. context. Those words have meanings, and

  225. the context helps us to broaden our understanding of what that's

  226. about. South Jesus talked about this

  227. word of being meek in and of himself, but what was the other

  228. things that he was talking about to help us understand why it's

  229. so important? So go back to where you were,

  230. where your ribbon was, or where your ribbon is in Matthew

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  231. Chapter 11, and let's read this again where it says this.

  232. It wasn't just that He was meek. All the words surrounded are

  233. this. Come unto me, all ye that labor,

  234. and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

  235. Take my yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly

  236. in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

  237. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

  238. So this is not just the fact that Jesus is explaining His

  239. meekness to a crowd, but rather what He is doing is making a

  240. call to a crowd and the call is this, Come unto me.

  241. Why can you come to me? Because I am meek and lowly in

  242. heart. This is important.

  243. He is speaking to an entire crowd and He is telling them,

  244. come to me and you can come to me in confidence because I am

  245. the meek and lowly one of heart. So here's the question as we

  246. broaden it out even more. So we took the word meek and

  247. then we broaden it out to see the text of which He was

  248. speaking about His meekness. But let's broaden it out even

  249. more. Ask ourselves this question.

  250. Who is He speaking to? OK, so he's making this call for

  251. people to come, but who's supposed to come?

  252. Who are the people that he's talking to?

  253. Well, the good news is all the answer for us today is contained

  254. in Matthew Chapter 11. So go all the way back to the

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  255. beginning. We're reading the whole chapter.

  256. Just kidding. All right?

  257. But some of you are really quite sad.

  258. Should I say Amen to that? I don't know what I should say.

  259. We're going to read some different sections here very

  260. quickly, and I want to explain just for sake of time, but I do

  261. want us to see here. Look at verse #1 Chapter 11.

  262. And it came to pass when Jesus had made an end of commanding

  263. His 12 disciples. He departed thence to teach and

  264. preach in their cities. But that sounds familiar,

  265. doesn't it? That's what we saw last week,

  266. that He was healing to teach and preach because the healing was

  267. to authenticate the message in the messenger.

  268. Well, here he is again. He's still teaching and he's

  269. still preaching. Verse 2.

  270. Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ, he

  271. sent two of his disciples. Now which John is this?

  272. You may ask? John the Baptist.

  273. Not John the Baptizer, but John the Baptist as we talked about

  274. last week. And John the Baptist sent two of

  275. his disciples to Jesus, and look at what he says.

  276. Some of you may never even seen this verse before, and some of

  277. you might be surprised about what John the Baptist is about

  278. to ask. Because John the Baptist was the

  279. one who said, Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of

  280. the world. John the Baptist was the one who

  281. was supposed to be baptizing Jesus and when he was approached

  282. by Jesus about this, he says I'm not even worthy to unlatch your

  283. shoe. But then Jesus said no, you are

  284. to do this, for I am to follow to give an example to others.

  285. John had great faith, but look at what it says in verse 3 and

  286. said unto him, Art thou he that should come or we should look

  287. for another? Do you understand the

  288. ramifications of what we just read?

  289. John is starting to question his own faith in the message that he

  290. preached to the masses. Say, Pastor, how's that

  291. possible? You've never doubted your faith

  292. before. Don't make me come down there.

  293. I'm coming all the way down. All right?

  294. I'm about to go to the sound booth.

  295. You've never doubted your faith? No, no.

  296. Let's get down to brass tacks this morning.

  297. Some of you just looking at me like this is pie in the sky

  298. stuff here that we're just. This is what pastor has to do.

  299. Because, you know, it was even ready because he thought there

  300. was going to be a storm. Was he?

  301. Did he have a sermon ready? Yeah, I had a sermon ready.

  302. I got one for tonight, too. And I had one for this morning

  303. for Sunday school. Right.

  304. I was ready for all of it. But.

  305. But understand, have you ever doubted?

  306. You were just in your face. They got.

  307. Are you good? Because I don't feel like it.

  308. God, are you watching? Because it doesn't feel like you

  309. know where I'm at. What are what are you doing?

  310. And John had one of those moments.

  311. What I love about it is that Jesus did not rebuke John, but

  312. he also didn't leave him in that state.

  313. What John told him to do is so illustrative for us.

  314. Look at it. I could probably quote it for

  315. you, but I want to make sure I say it correctly.

  316. Look at what it says. And Jesus answered, said to him,

  317. Go and show John again the things which you do here, and

  318. see. The blind receive their sight,

  319. the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf here, the

  320. dead are raised up, the poor of the Gospel preached unto them,

  321. and blessed is he whosoever shall not be offended in me.

  322. His answer was this. Go tell him again the things

  323. that he saw. Could I maybe help you with what

  324. you deal with when you deal with doubts?

  325. What do I need to do? Go back to those things that you

  326. know God has already taught you. Go back to those times you had

  327. spiritual victories. Go all the way back to the time

  328. that you got saved if you need to.

  329. I can't tell you how many times that even in my own mind when

  330. when when Satan has tried to get me twisted up in my own mind or

  331. my flesh has gotten me into trouble and I start to question

  332. if is there something within me that's wrong or did I maybe that

  333. I never even get saved in the first place.

  334. That I get taken back to that office at 5121 Kelly Rd. in

  335. Tampa, FL where I was in the office of Steve Baker, where I

  336. knelt down in front of a chair and asked Jesus Christ to save

  337. me. I have to go back again.

  338. But then I wondered, did I really?

  339. Did that really happen? And then I had to start asking

  340. myself, but what about when God spoke to me during these

  341. messages and I got things right? Who's speaking to me then?

  342. The Holy Spirit is inside of me. What's the Holy Spirit inside of

  343. you? Proof of your salvation, It says

  344. go tell him again. Go back to those passages you've

  345. read in your Bible. You ought to have a, you ought

  346. to have a top ten list in your Bible reading top 10 passages

  347. that have blessed you in the past.

  348. By the way, doesn't have to be 10.

  349. But do you understand what I'm saying?

  350. That when you start doubting certain things and you start

  351. having trouble, that you go back to some old favorites.

  352. You know, don't turn on the same old song that makes you feel

  353. sorry again. Go back to the book of Psalms or

  354. to some other book in this book that reminds you of what Jesus

  355. has done in your life. So who is he speaking to?

  356. Well, he's speaking to John through his disciples, but then

  357. it says in verse number 7. And as they departed, Jesus

  358. began to say to the multitudes concerning John, meaning that as

  359. soon as he said this to the disciples and they left, Jesus

  360. then turned to the crowd who had already been there, and now he

  361. speaks to them. This is one event that's taking

  362. place. This isn't several events that

  363. are taking place. It's one event.

  364. Are you following me right now? This means yes, and this means

  365. no. All right.

  366. Are we following? OK, good.

  367. All right, he said. What went ye into the wilderness

  368. to see a Reed shaken with the wind?

  369. It's almost as if the crowd starts murmuring to themselves

  370. like, what's John? Was John that great?

  371. Why is John doubting that? It's almost like they're

  372. starting to wonder if John the Baptist was the real deal.

  373. And Jesus. Starts to explain to them don't

  374. you take this out on John. That's what explains them.

  375. Look at what he says but when you went out to see a man

  376. clothed and soft raiment. Behold, they that wear soft

  377. clothing are in King's houses. But what we out to see a

  378. prophet. Yeah, I say unto you and more

  379. than a prophet for this is he of whom it is written.

  380. Behold, I send my messenger before thy face which shall

  381. prepare the way before me. He even goes back to Malachi

    Malachi 3:1

  382. chapter 3 verse 1. He said John and his mission and

  383. his ministry was biblically ordained by God.

  384. Don't look down on him because of his doubts.

  385. And he continues on, and he finishes.

  386. Verse #15 He says, He the hath ears, let him hear.

  387. Then verse 16 he continues, But we're in too shy like in this

  388. generation. It's like unto children sitting

  389. in the markets and calling under their fellows, and saying, We

  390. have piped unto you. We've not, you've not danced,

  391. we've moored with you, and you've not lamented.

  392. For John came neither eating nor drinking.

  393. And they say He had the devil, the Son of man came eating and

  394. drinking. And they say, behold, a man

  395. gluttonous and a wine bib, or a friend of publicans and sinners.

  396. But wisdom is justifies of her children.

  397. And Jesus now exposes the duplicitous of the people.

  398. He says this, you can't ever be satisfied.

  399. You didn't like John and so one came with a different spirit

  400. than John. And you didn't like me.

  401. He says, like someone saying, Hey, did you?

  402. Why don't you rejoice with me? And they turn around and say,

  403. why don't you mourn with me? And you'd kind of say, well,

  404. what do you want? And that's what Jesus is

  405. exposing to the people. He says, what do you want?

  406. And he's showing them how fickle they truly are.

  407. And then it says in verse #20 then began he to upbraid the

  408. cities wherein most of his mighty works were done because

  409. they repented not. What does that word then mean?

  410. It's just still the same conversation.

  411. Now I'm going somewhere with this.

  412. All right? If you think I'm not going

  413. anywhere with this, I am getting there.

  414. It just may take a while to get there.

  415. All right. So he's talking about John the

  416. Baptist, and then he talks to the people who are complaining

  417. about John the Baptist. And then he talks about how

  418. fickle the people are in their complaints.

  419. And then in the same conversation, he starts to bring

  420. condemnation on three towns in particular, Cherazin and Besadia

  421. and Capernaum. And he says, in essence, he says

  422. if the works that were done here were done in Sodom and Gomorrah,

  423. they would have repented. He says, you are so hard in your

  424. heart that what's been done in front of you, you don't even

  425. recognize it. And he's talking to these what

  426. could only be called unsaved people.

  427. And he says this, why don't you get it?

  428. And then verse 25, it says at that time, no, at that time.

  429. Does that mean at a later time or at the same time?

  430. A later time or the same time? OK, good.

  431. Some of you want to participate. All this time I'm giving you a

  432. chance, and now you don't want to take it at the same time.

  433. This is the same conversation that's taking place all the way

  434. from verse one to now. And so he says, I thank thee, O

  435. Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid

  436. these things from the wise, and the prudent has revealed them

  437. unto babes. Even so, Father, for it seemed

  438. good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me

  439. and my father. And no man knoweth the Son but

  440. the Father, and neither knoweth any man by the Father save the

  441. Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him to.

  442. And then after all that he says, come unto me, all you that

  443. labor, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

  444. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I meek and lowly in

  445. heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls, For my yoke is

  446. easy, and my burden is light. So you see how we expanded it.

  447. We took the word meek and we asked ourselves, what?

  448. What is he saying about meekness?

  449. It's really a conversation about coming to him.

  450. And then we asked ourselves, well, who's supposed to come to

  451. him? And we enlarged it to the whole

  452. chapter. And then the chapter we found

  453. that he was talking about John. And then he was talking to the

  454. people and calls out their hypocrisy and brings

  455. condemnation upon them because of their unbelief.

  456. And then in the same conversation he says, come.

  457. So who was he talking to? Two groups of people.

  458. First of all, he's obviously talking to the unsaved.

  459. What was he saying to the unsaved?

  460. Come, you know what the message is today?

  461. Come unto him. You know what's interesting?

  462. After all that took place and Jesus exposes the fickleness of

  463. the people, brings condemnation upon them, and still he follows

  464. that up with come unto me. This message is unique to Jesus

  465. over every other person in history.

  466. My message to you this morning is run to him.

  467. Peter's message in Acts was believe on him.

  468. Paul's message in the epistles was consider him and look unto

  469. him. John the apostles message was to

  470. have fellowship with him. The author of Hebrews message

  471. was to diligently seek him. When man preaches, the finger

  472. should always point to him. But Jesus is unique because he

  473. didn't say to go seek someone else.

  474. Jesus said this come to me and that ought to make us excited

  475. this morning. Then I make a dead Baptist

  476. excited this morning. Then everyone else says go to

  477. him. But Jesus says come to me.

  478. And he's the only one who legitimately can say come unto

  479. me. For my yoke is easy.

  480. My burden is light. The yoke of sin is heavy.

  481. The yoke of bondage is heavy. The yoke of condemnation that is

  482. upon you as unsaved is so heavy you can't even fathom it.

  483. How heavy is it? It's as heavy as the lake of

  484. fire for all eternity. And yet people would say, what

  485. an angry God, what an unjust God, what a miserable God, when

  486. that God is saying, come, come unto me, because only He can

  487. lift that condemnation that's upon you.

  488. No, only He can lift the condemnation that's upon you for

  489. your sins. The wrath of God abideth on

  490. those who are unsaved. You know what cannot remove the

  491. wrath of God? The Eucharist, you know it

  492. cannot remove the wrath of God, the baptismal waters, you said

  493. when you're talking about the the other denominations, because

  494. that pool that you have here, that horse through that can

  495. remove that one can't remove it either because that's a picture

  496. of what Christ has already done in the heart, not the actual

  497. removal of sins. Your good works cannot remove

  498. the condemnation. The heavy burden of sin and

  499. judgment is upon you, and the Bible says that the wrath of God

  500. abideth on you, and the only way that can be lifted is to come.

  501. He didn't say come unto me in your works.

  502. He didn't say come unto me with your excuses.

  503. He just didn't say come unto me and be a good person says come

  504. unto me, take my yoke upon you. He carried the burden for us.

  505. You thought the cross was heavy. The cross was light compared to

  506. the weight of your sins and the weight of my sins.

  507. Come unto me. I'm meek and lowly of heart.

  508. He showed His meekness on the cross.

  509. One commentator said. His meekness shone brightest at

  510. the cross where love restrained. His omnipotence and patience

  511. triumphed over power. The literal embodiment of power

  512. under control was Jesus on the cross.

  513. That is meekness. First Peter 223 who when he was

  514. reviled, reviled not. Again, when he suffered, he

  515. threatened not, but committed himself to him.

  516. That judges righteously. Yes, we considered John the

  517. Baptist, yet rather we consider John the Baptist that the

  518. message of come was to the unsaved.

  519. But remember, the same conversation started with what

  520. John, who was John? A believer.

  521. So the message of Come, come unto me was not just to the

  522. unsaved, but also goes all the way back to the beginning of

  523. that chapter, and it goes to John the Baptist and to all the

  524. saved. Wouldn't it be great that after

  525. you got saved, you had no more burdens?

  526. Listen, the greatest burden has been lifted from you when you're

  527. saved. But the trials and troubles of

  528. life still weigh upon us, don't they?

  529. Sickness is still real difficulties, still real

  530. hardships, finances, work situations, family situations,

  531. they all weigh upon the soul and your need to come to Christ is

  532. true in salvation, but it never truly ends in your life.

  533. I'm not saying you lose your salvation.

  534. The Bible doesn't say that. It says quite the opposite.

  535. But I will tell you this is that you still need to come to Him

  536. every day. Like the old hymn says, I need

  537. the every hour, every hour. And if you're saved this

  538. morning, aren't you glad that the call for come unto me isn't

  539. just to the unsaved, but that he's still calling you this

  540. morning? And I could be so bold to even

  541. tell you this morning, Jesus Christ is calling you today at

  542. this moment, and says, Come unto me, all ye that labor and are

  543. heavy laden, for I will give you rest if you're discouraged.

  544. He says come unto me if your faith wavers.

  545. He says, come unto me. When you have doubts, He says,

  546. Come unto me. When you're confused, He says,

  547. Come unto me. When you're tempted, he says,

  548. Come unto me. Why is it so important to read

  549. your Bible every day? Well, it's because it's an

  550. extension of the call come unto me.

  551. Why is it important to have an active prayer life?

  552. Because it's an extension of the call.

  553. Come unto me. He calls us through His word.

  554. He beckons us to meet with Him every day.

  555. He calls to us to pray. He He beckons to fellowship with

  556. us. Why is it important to be in a

  557. vibrant Bible preaching church? Because we come together to be

  558. able to fellowship with Him and to fellowship with one another

  559. so we can encourage one another. But all of that is to come unto

  560. each other. No, the call is to come unto

  561. Him. You can come that confidence

  562. because he's meek. Really, all this comes down to

  563. the fact that Jesus Christ is meek and because of his

  564. meekness, you can meet with him. In fact, I would put it this

  565. way, you can meet with Christ because of the meekness of

  566. Christ. If you remember one thing this

  567. morning, remember this, You can meet with Christ because of the

  568. meekness of Christ, because there's a lot of people who

  569. would tell you, hey, if you need something, come see me.

  570. And then you need something and you're like, where'd they go?

  571. As a pastor, it's often something that I will say if

  572. someone extends to me the need that they have trouble, I'll say

  573. if you need anything, let me know.

  574. But something I've learned very quickly in ministry is if you

  575. say that, you better mean it because everybody will tell you,

  576. hey, you need something, call me and all of a sudden the phone's

  577. off the hook. Wait, there's no hooks anymore,

  578. But you understand the phone's on silent.

  579. Is that better? The phones on do not disturb

  580. people And I look, I understand that sometimes we can't be

  581. available to everyone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  582. I understand that. I'm not trying to say that we

  583. are. But there is that element that

  584. man will say come and then push away.

  585. But Christ is so meek and lowly in heart that to every person

  586. he's ever said come, He has never turned away.

  587. That's a beautiful thing. Say well, you don't understand

  588. what my life has been like. Jesus Christ couldn't save me.

  589. He said come. He said come, you can be saved

  590. today. He paid the penalty for your sin

  591. on the cross. You can come to him today and

  592. call upon him in salvation and you can be saved.

  593. I'll ask you when it was truly the last time saved person here

  594. this morning that you really went to him and had a real

  595. fellowship with him. No, I mean that you, you read

  596. your Bible and maybe just read a few verses and you just stopped.

  597. So, you know, I'm going to sit here and think about this for a

  598. while and maybe your mind starts to wander because our minds do,

  599. don't they? And they kind of just bring it

  600. back and bring it back again. When was the last time you were

  601. in church and you felt like you really met with God?

  602. Now he's here, He wants to meet with you, but that doesn't mean

  603. we meet with him. That your heart was ready for

  604. the Word of God, that as the word was preached, you thought I

  605. need to respond to this. And again, that doesn't mean

  606. that meeting with him means everyone has to flood the altar.

  607. It just means this. You need to be responsive to the

  608. word of God. Now, if you pray here at the

  609. altar, that's a wonderful thing. We encourage that.

  610. But we're not counting numbers here.

  611. You know, I'd much rather have people who show lives that

  612. they've met with God, not having numbers of people that have come

  613. to the front. If you're weary, if you have

  614. difficulty, you don't know where to turn.

  615. Come unto him. He's meek and he's lowly of

  616. heart. I remember when I was in first

  617. grade, I don't remember the name of the teacher because I was in

  618. her classroom for maybe a couple months.

  619. It's a long story, one that no, all right, my teacher supposed

  620. to be available. She's supposed to help students,

  621. and for whatever reason, my teacher probably did not have

  622. the real desire to teach. I'm not saying that everyone

  623. that's in the teaching profession really has that

  624. desire, and she certainly did not for whatever reason.

  625. I remember very few things about this, but I do remember a little

  626. bit. But I just remember thinking

  627. that, well, I don't really like this class.

  628. And apparently my parents saw enough that made them

  629. uncomfortable that they wanted me out of the class and actually

  630. changed me to a different class with a teacher that I do

  631. remember whose name was Miss Lutheran, that was a Miss

  632. Luthan's class. I loved Miss Luthan's class.

  633. But then I got to 2nd grade. I had a teacher named Missus

  634. Noriega. Now I love to read today.

  635. And the reason I love to read is because of Missus Noriega.

  636. And I remember she would read to us as all teachers are supposed

  637. to. They read to you at that age.

  638. But she had this bookshelf just filled with books.

  639. And she said if you want some books, just come and get them.

  640. And I remember after school I would stay in her classroom

  641. sometimes and and read, grab a book.

  642. I'd grab a book on Friday and bring it back on Monday and get

  643. a new book. And I'd love to read today

  644. because I would read in those little 5060 page books back in

  645. Miss Noriega's class in second grade.

  646. Now I read 607 hundred page books that still sometimes test

  647. me. But was there more pictures in

  648. them? Be honest with you.

  649. But but 500 pages of pictures and 200 pages of reading might

  650. be better. But I just remember that the

  651. spirit of the two teachers was so different that I wanted to

  652. stay with Miss Noriega. It was interesting.

  653. When I was in 3rd grade, after school, I'd go back to Miss

  654. Noriega's class. I didn't get passed over.

  655. I'm just saying I went back and get more books and she became a

  656. friend of our family by the time I was in fifth grade there at

  657. Westgate or at Woodbridge Elementary School in Tampa.

  658. I just remember, well, both of them were supposed to be

  659. available. They're teachers, right?

  660. Well, the spirit of one said I'm good, In fact, I want to get out

  661. of here. The spirit of the other kept

  662. bringing me back over and over and over again.

  663. If you don't feel like you can come to Christ, is it because of

  664. something that he has done in his posture or in his character

  665. that would push you away? Well, he's not fair.

  666. I can't be around him. Boy, He is so angry.

  667. I can't be around him. Oh boy, He, he is not worthy of

  668. faith. I can't be around him.

  669. Or is it that he's always said come and he's meek and lowly of

  670. heart and the reason you don't want to be around him as much as

  671. because of you? That's tough talk, but it's not

  672. meant to be mean. I'm just trying to present to

  673. you what the Bible says. I'm not here to make you feel

  674. good. I'm here to be your pastor.

  675. Now, if I make you feel good along the way, that's good.

  676. But sometimes we got to feel bad before we feel good.

  677. And I'm saying if we go, I don't know what you said, Ralph, but I

  678. like it. All right.

  679. And if we don't want to be around him, is it because he's

  680. not meek, he's not lowly? Because the whole central

  681. message of come because his yoke is easy, it's his burden is

  682. light is you can come to me because I'm meek and I'm lowly

  683. and again, not weakness, but that meek Savior is so powerful

  684. that he can help you with whatever you need, including and

  685. most importantly your salvation. And if he can help you with your

  686. salvation, you think he can help you with your bank account.

  687. You know, I'm not going to be flipping.

  688. I'm just saying, if he could save your soul for all eternity,

  689. you think he can help your bank account or he can help you at

  690. the job, or he can help you with a with a physical illness, or he

  691. can bring you grace to be able to sustain you through those

  692. things. Even if he doesn't solve them

  693. the way you want them to be solved.

  694. He can do it. But it all comes down to this

  695. phrase. Come and you can come to him

  696. because He's meek and lowly of heart.

  697. I'll leave you with this verse. And we end the word of God with

  698. it just two verses shy of the end of the Bible.

  699. The Spirit and the Bride say come, but him that Heareth say

  700. come and let him that is athirst come, and whosoever will let him

  701. take the water of life freely. The very end of the Bible, Jesus

  702. reminds us you need to come. Come to him in salvation.

  703. And once you get saved, don't stop coming to Him.

  704. Keep coming to Him because he is meek and lowly of heart.
