  1. Psalm 101. I said last week we were going to

  2. do the whole psalm, and we made it through one

  3. verse. So I'm not going to say we'll do the whole

  4. psalm tonight. We won't. But we might finish

  5. it at some point. Psalm 101. We'll read verse

  6. 1 and verse 2, and then we'll pray. I will sing

  7. of faithful love and justice. I will sing praise

  8. to you, Lord. I will pay attention to the way

  9. of integrity. When will you come to me? I will

  10. live with a heart of integrity in my house. Let's

  11. pray. God, we come to you. We thank you for your

  12. good word. And I pray, dear Lord, that you would

  13. help us to be men and women of integrity. that

  14. we would have the same heart as David here, that

  15. we would seek you, that we would long for you,

  16. that we would desire to walk for you and not

  17. walk in the ways of the world. I pray that your

  18. Holy Spirit would be among us tonight, God. I

  19. pray that these couple of little verses we look

  20. at would just, we'd get something from them.

  21. We'd grow in you. I pray, God, that you would

  22. hide me behind the cross, dear Lord, that I would

  23. preach and teach in a way that brings glory and

  24. honor to you tonight. And I ask these things

  25. in Jesus' name. Amen. We see that this psalm,

  26. we talked about it a little bit last week in

  27. this first verse. This is a praise to the Lord.

  28. David here is praising God. He's praising God

  29. for his faithful love, for his justice. We talked

  30. about what those things meant last week. We won't

  31. go back into that again. But really when we get

  32. to verse 2, we begin to see kind of what the

  33. main theme of Psalm 101 is. And that is integrity.

  34. What does David say? He says, I will pay attention

  35. to the way of integrity. He says it again at

  36. the end of the verse. I will live with a heart

  37. of integrity in my house. What does it mean to

  38. be a man or a woman of integrity? Well, integrity

  39. is doing the right thing. It's doing the right

  40. thing. But maybe a better definition of integrity

  41. is doing the right thing when nobody's looking.

  42. That's really what integrity is because we'll

  43. all do the right thing when somebody's looking,

  44. right? Somebody's looking and you know what you're

  45. supposed to do, you're probably going to do it.

  46. But what do you do behind closed doors when nobody's

  47. watching? Say it's your job if you still work

  48. or maybe in the past. When the boss is there,

  49. it seems like people work a little harder than

  50. when he's not there. When the boss is not there,

  51. people may lollygag, people may take a few more

  52. breaks, but when the boss comes in, guess what?

  53. Things change. Everybody sits up straight in

  54. their chair, and the breaks cut down, and the

  55. bathroom breaks cut down, and the work increases

  56. a little bit, right? And that's kind of what

  57. we are tempted to do, and if we're honest, we've

  58. probably all done that some in our work. We kind

  59. of slack. But integrity is doing the right thing

  60. even when nobody's watching. Now, we can sit

  61. in this room tonight. We're going to do the right

  62. thing. Ain't none of us going to say nothing

  63. off the wall, say nothing crazy. Everything's

  64. going to be good. We're not going to be looking

  65. at nothing that's inappropriate on our phones.

  66. But what are we going to do tonight when we go

  67. home when nobody's watching? What are we going

  68. to say? What kind of mouths are going to, I mean,

  69. words are going to come from our mouth? What

  70. kind of things are we going to be? Bringing in

  71. to our body, are our eyes going to see, are our

  72. ears going to hear? What kind of thoughts are

  73. going to run through our mind? Oh, we got a good

  74. attitude here. We smile. Everything's good. How

  75. you doing, brother? Good to see y 'all. I hope

  76. you're having a good night. But then, does our

  77. attitude change when we leave? If we're a man

  78. or a woman of integrity, we'll be the same when

  79. nobody's looking as we are when people are looking.

  80. And that's what David desires to be. He desires

  81. to be a man of integrity. A man who says, I have

  82. done the right thing. That should be our desire.

  83. That when we get to the end of the day every

  84. day, that we can look back at our day without

  85. any regrets. That we can know that we've done

  86. the right thing. That we've done what we're supposed

  87. to do. And here's some cool thing about it right

  88. here. When we do what we're supposed to do, we'll

  89. sleep a lot better at night. Some people have

  90. trouble sleeping at night. Me too sometimes.

  91. And sometimes I wonder maybe the reason why I

  92. have trouble sleeping is maybe because of something

  93. I've done or hadn't done. Sometimes there's stuff

  94. going on in our life that's not right and we

  95. don't have any rest in our soul because we haven't

  96. been men and women of integrity. But David desires

  97. to be that here. He's praising the Lord. He says,

  98. God, I praise your faithful love. I praise your

  99. justice. God, I rejoice in you. and I desire

  100. to be a man of integrity for you, Lord, not just

  101. for me, but for all in my house, so that I'd

  102. be a man of integrity, and that my wife would

  103. see that, and that my children would see that,

  104. and that my friends would see that, and that

  105. my community would see that, and that his whole

  106. kingdom that he was king of would see that he

  107. was a man of integrity. Now, he had the desire

  108. to be a man of integrity, but sadly, he was not

  109. always a man of integrity. It'd be great if we

  110. looked through the pages of Scripture and David

  111. was what he wanted to be, but he wasn't. There's

  112. plenty of times where David did not do the right

  113. thing, and neither do we. We may genuinely have

  114. that desire to be a man or a woman of integrity,

  115. but sometimes we fail, and perhaps we need to

  116. echo David's words here in the middle of verse

  117. 2. When will you come to me? Lord, I need you.

  118. Lord, when will you come to me? God, I want to

  119. be a man of integrity. I want to be a woman of

  120. integrity. God, I need your help to do that.

  121. And that's our desire and that should be what

  122. we strive for. But we also know that we fail.

  123. But praise the Lord, there was a better king

  124. that was coming. Now David started a kingship

  125. way back when he was appointed king. And guess

  126. who was eventually going to come through the

  127. line of David? It was going to be Jesus Christ,

  128. the King of kings and the Lord of lords. One

  129. who could be a man of perfect integrity. So praise

  130. God. We seek to live for Him. We seek to do what

  131. is right. And sometimes we fail. And that's not

  132. an excuse. We shouldn't just say, oh, I failed.

  133. It's okay, you know. No, we're going to fail,

  134. but we should never be okay with that. Our sin

  135. and our failures, they bring about some burden

  136. on us. But praise the Lord, Jesus Christ can

  137. take that burden. That even though that we fail,

  138. Jesus Christ never did. And so we need to seek

  139. in our life to be men and women of integrity.

  140. We want to do the right thing. You might have

  141. had some opportunities today to do the right

  142. thing and you didn't do it. You're probably going

  143. to have some opportunities tomorrow to do the

  144. right thing. Are you going to do it? Are you

  145. going to do what God wants you to do? Are you

  146. going to do what's right or are you going to

  147. slack? Got the opportunity in front of all of

  148. these people, man and woman of integrity. What

  149. about when you leave this place? If you just

  150. do the right thing when people are watching,

  151. you are not a man or a woman of integrity. You

  152. are a hypocrite. Jesus talks about this very

  153. idea at the end of Matthew chapter 24. He talks

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  154. about those who were supposed to be doing the

  155. master's work, and the master delayed his coming.

  156. And so instead of being diligent, and when the

  157. master would find the worker at work, instead

  158. the worker was out living for himself. And then

  159. the master comes back, and what's happening?

  160. The worker... is not being a man of integrity.

  161. And Jesus says, you are a hypocrite. So what

  162. about us? Are we doing the Lord's work? The Lord's

  163. always watching. I don't see what you do. You

  164. don't see what I do. But the Lord sees what all

  165. of us do. And we need to remember that. And that

  166. needs to be what drives us to Do what is right

  167. in our life. And the choices we make and the

  168. things we do and the way that we treat people,

  169. we need to do it with integrity. Let's pray.

  170. God, we thank you for this simple word, but a

  171. powerful command it is to us, dear Lord, and

  172. help us to look at our own life because maybe

  173. there are some areas in our life where we have

  174. not been men and women of integrity. Maybe...

  175. Maybe we are hypocritical in some way, dear Lord.

  176. Maybe we look good when we come up here, but

  177. maybe behind closed doors we know our life is

  178. a wreck and we need to change the way we act,

  179. change the way we treat others, change the way

  180. we speak, change the things that we look at,

  181. change the things that we do. Help us to be those

  182. who do what is right, dear Lord, that we would

  183. seek your word to know what is right. Your Holy

  184. Spirit would lead us, that we would follow those

  185. convictions of the Holy Spirit, God. We know

  186. we fail, and we don't want to fail. But I pray

  187. that you help us to have that desire to do what

  188. is right. And we pray that you'd give us grace

  189. when we fail and strengthen us to help us grow

  190. in those times through Jesus Christ. We thank

  191. you that he was a man of perfect integrity, and

  192. so it is him we seek now. And I ask these things

  193. in Jesus' name. Amen.
