  1. It's episode 100 of Liberty at Home here on ECAT.

  2. Hello, friends, both here in Easton and around the globe.

  3. It's time for episode 100. Yes, that's right.

  4. It's our 100th episode of Liberty at Home right here on

  5. ECAT. I'm your host, Pastor Adam

  6. Rivero of the Liberty Baptist Church here in town.

  7. For those of you who may not know, we started Liberty at Home

  8. on Facebook during the initial days of the COVID pandemic.

  9. After 86 episodes, we wrapped for a bit before moving over

  10. here to Easton Community Access Television.

  11. We've been airing for three seasons now.

  12. I want to thank all the kind staff at ECAT for their help in

  13. making this weekly broadcast happen, particularly Adam

  14. Guerrero, the Director of Community Media here at the

  15. station. Now with all that being said, we

  16. still have a devotion to share, so let's get right to it by

  17. turning in our Bibles to James chapter #2 where we'll begin

  18. reading in verse #18 Yeah, a man may say, thou hast faith and I

  19. have works. Show me thy faith without thy

  20. works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.

  21. They'll believe us that there is one God.

  22. Thou doest well, the the devils also believe and tremble.

  23. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is

  24. dead? Was not Abraham, our father,

  25. justified by works when he had offered Isaac, his son upon the

  26. altar? See us now how faith wrought

  27. with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

  28. As a pastor, people often bring certain Bible passages to my

  29. attention that they find troublesome.

  30. I firmly believe that the Bible is God's inspired word, and as

  31. such it is without error. Yet I also recognize that there

  32. are certain passages of Scripture that can cause

  33. confusion if they're not thoroughly studied out.

  34. Often I'm asked about James chapter 2, specifically about

    James 2 chapter mention

  35. how the chapter seems to suggest that Abraham achieved salvation

  36. by good works. Of course, as Baptists, and more

  37. importantly as Biblicists, we hold dear the fact that we are

  38. not saved by works, but rather by trusting in Christ's finished

  39. work on the cross. The confusion specifically comes

  40. from some of the verses we just read, James chapter 2, verses 20

    James 2:20–21

  41. through 21, which says, But wilt thou know, O vain man, that

  42. faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father,

  43. justified by works when he offered Isaac his son upon the

  44. altar? Now this passage may seem

  45. problematic at first glance, seemingly teaching that

  46. salvation can be obtained through good deeds.

  47. In fact, did you know that the reformer Martin Luther, who

  48. rejected the Catholic teaching of salvation by works, didn't

  49. even believe the book of James was part of the Biblical Canon

  50. because of these verses and other verses in the book as

  51. well? Yet a closer inspection shows

  52. that James explanation of Abraham's works is in perfect

  53. harmony with the doctrine of salvation by grace taught

  54. throughout the rest of Scripture.

  55. The passage through the example of Abraham as well as Rahab

  56. later on shows us that good works do not save us.

  57. Rather, good works naturally flow from someone who already

  58. has faith. That's why James says in verse

  59. 23 of chapter 2 And the scripture was fulfilled, which

  60. saith Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for

  61. righteousness, and he was called the friend of God.

  62. Now what's James saying? It's clear that he is

  63. encouraging believers to be active in performing charitable

  64. acts because saying you have faith yet not expressing it

  65. outwardly is of little help to someone who's in need.

  66. And that's why in some verses before James chapter 2, verses

    James 2:14–16

  67. 14 through 16, it says, What does it profit, my brethren?

  68. Though a man say he have faith and have not works, can faith

  69. save him if a brother or sister be naked or destitute of daily

  70. food? And what if you say unto them,

  71. Depart in peace, be warmed and filled, notwithstanding you give

  72. him not those things which are needful to the body, what does

  73. it profit? The clear call of scripture is

  74. that salvation cannot be achieved on our own merits.

  75. Our good works are like filthy rags.

  76. As it says in Isaiah chapter 64 verse six.

    Isaiah 64 chapter mention

  77. You can never give enough money, join enough philanthropic

  78. organizations, or do enough charitable acts to achieve a

  79. heavenly home. Those that teach that works can

  80. save someone have earned from Bible doctrine and have changed

  81. the pure message of the Gospel. James chapter 2 teaches us

    James 2 chapter mention

  82. something much different. For those who are believers,

  83. good works are an outgrowth of our new life in Christ.

  84. Just as an apple tree produces apples and a Grapevine brings

  85. forth grapes, the natural byproduct of a Christian must be

  86. good works. Can someone be saved by their

  87. works? Never should a person who calls

  88. themselves a believer be active in good works.

  89. Yes, it's a necessity. Well, thanks for joining us for

  90. episode 100 of Liberty Home. We've got one more episode for
