  1. It's always good to see people smiling and laughing

  2. and loving each other. For those watching online,

  3. if you wonder why I'm just standing here, I'm

  4. just watching people just smiling and loving

  5. and still visiting with each other this morning.

  6. It's good. Praise the Lord. That's a good thing.

  7. It's now time for Children's Church. If we have

  8. any children six and under that would like to

  9. go to Children's Church, we should have somebody.

  10. We've got a couple back there coming up front.

  11. Just hang tight. For the rest of us, we will

  12. be in second. 2 Chronicles 24. That's going to

  13. be in the Old Testament, not to be confused with

  14. 2 Corinthians in the New Testament. 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 24 chapter mention

  15. chapter 24. We're going to start in verse 24.

  16. 2 Chronicles. Chapter 24, verse 24 and 25. These

    2 Chronicles 24:24

  17. verses are not going to make a whole lot of sense

  18. without the whole context, but the whole context

  19. is a little too long to read through. I mean,

  20. I'd be glad to. I would be glad if we just set

  21. up camp and we could stay till three or four

  22. today. But I'm guessing that most of the rest

  23. of you probably don't want to do that. So we'll

  24. just look at kind of the end of the story, and

  25. then I'll tell you the rest of the story. And

  26. I encourage you to go back and read this story.

  27. Always, always go back and read God's Word. Don't

  28. take anybody's word for it, not mine or anybody

  29. else's. You always go back and read the Scriptures

  30. and see what God's Word says for yourself. And

  31. you pray about it and you read through it and

  32. you read these words and you see these stories.

  33. All of these stories, they have a point. Even

  34. these Old Testament stories, they point us to

  35. Jesus Christ. little nuggets of beauty in these

  36. passages. And we see this story in 2 Corinthians,

  37. or excuse me, 2 Chronicles 24. You also see the

  38. same story recounted in 2 Kings chapter 11. You

    2 Kings 11 chapter mention

  39. see, it's a few different details, but Kings

  40. and Chronicles, they both kind of cover the same

  41. period in history. And so a lot of the things

  42. repeat as you read through those books. And this

  43. story is one of those. So we're going to read

  44. these couple of verses, 2 Chronicles 24, verses

    2 Chronicles 24:24

  45. 24 and 25, and then we're going to pray and we'll

  46. get started. Although the Aramean army came with

  47. only a few men, the Lord handed over a vast army

  48. to them because the people of Judah had abandoned

  49. Yahweh. the God of their ancestors. So they executed

  50. judgment on Joash. When the Arameans saw that

  51. Joash had many wounds, they left him. His servants

  52. conspired against him and killed him on his bed

  53. because he had shed the blood of the sons of

  54. Jehoiada, the priest. So he died, and they buried

  55. him in the city of David. But they did not bury

  56. him in the tombs of the kings. Let's pray. God,

  57. we come to you today. And I thank you that we

  58. can come into your house and that we can look

  59. at your word. And I pray that your Holy Spirit

  60. would be in this place, dear Lord. We want you

  61. to speak to us through your word. And I pray

  62. that you free us of all the worries and the thoughts

  63. and the distractions that are in our mind. God,

  64. I pray that you take away any pride or any fear

  65. that's within me today, dear Lord, that the words

  66. I speak will be words that come from you, that

  67. God, when I open my mouth, that your Holy Spirit

  68. would speak through me and to me and to each

  69. one of us here, dear Lord. I pray that as we

  70. look at this scripture and think about this story,

  71. that you help us to see ways in which it applies

  72. to our life and how you make and speak to us

  73. today. God, we come and we want to hear from

  74. you, and I pray, God, that you would... Move

  75. in our lives today. In Jesus' name I pray it.

  76. Amen. Now here in these couple of verses that

  77. we looked at, we see the end of the life of King

  78. Joash. Now I'm sure that we're all familiar with

  79. all of the kings in Israel and Judah, and we

  80. know all about the stories. Well, probably not.

  81. Even if we've read through the stories. There's

  82. a lot of kings of Israel and a lot of kings of

  83. Judah. And it's hard for us to really kind of

  84. understand what's going on in this story. But

  85. I've always been fascinated with this story.

  86. I think it's a beautiful story that just speaks

  87. to the goodness of God in the big picture. And

  88. here we see the death of Joash. But we need to

  89. go back in time a little bit. Now, when you begin

  90. to read in the chapters before this and 2 Kings

  91. and in Chronicles, we earlier on are introduced

  92. to a couple of pretty bad folks. One is a king

  93. of Israel, and his name is Ahab, and he has a

  94. wife by the name of Jezebel. You may have heard

  95. of Jezebel before. She was pretty evil. And ultimately,

  96. Jezebel was killed by Jehu. And God had pronounced

  97. judgment on the descendants of Ahab that Jehu

  98. was going to kill those descendants and that

  99. Jehu's family was going to sit on the throne

  100. in Israel. And Jehu was also going to kill Jezebel.

  101. And it was a pretty gruesome thing. She was evil

  102. and God brought judgment on her. And when Jehu

  103. approached her, it says she was sitting up in

  104. the window and some of her servants was there.

  105. And he said, chunk her down, boys. And they did.

  106. They threw her down onto the ground and she was

  107. splattered on the ground and said the dogs came

  108. and ate her. And it was pretty gruesome. She

  109. didn't even have a proper burial. And that's

  110. an important theme for us to look at as we look

  111. at. This story and the story of the kings before

  112. this. Now, you may have noticed at the end of

  113. the verse we read that it says that when Joash

  114. died in verse 25, they buried him in the city

  115. of David, but they did not bury him in the tombs

  116. of the kings. Now, this is important because

  117. how you were buried or where you were buried

  118. was significant because it implied... what kind

  119. of life you lived, whether you lived a life that

  120. was worthy of an honorable burial or not. And

  121. so we see in the story of Jezebel that she didn't

  122. even get a burial. The dogs ate her. And here

  123. we see in this story that Joash was buried in

  124. the city of David, but not in the tomb of the

  125. kings. Now, the good kings were buried in the

  126. tomb of the kings, but there were some bad kings

  127. that were wicked. And it specifically points

  128. out that they were not buried in the tomb of

  129. the kings. And we'll talk about why that is here

  130. in a moment. And you say, why are we talking

  131. about Jezebel? Well, we have to kind of start.

  132. This whole story to me is kind of like a soap

  133. opera. It is a lot of families interconnected

  134. with each other. And it's a lot that goes on.

  135. And it's hard to keep track of all the names.

  136. And I'll try to keep it as simple as I can and

  137. try to not mess up with who's related to who.

  138. But Ahab, the scripture says, had a daughter

  139. named Athaliah. Now, it doesn't specifically

  140. say in the scripture that Jezebel was her mother,

  141. but I believe the only wife we ever see of Ahab

  142. in the scripture is Jezebel. And I think it's

  143. fair to assume that Jezebel was, in fact, the

  144. mother of Athaliah. Now, Ahab was the king of

  145. Israel, but Athaliah ended up marrying the king

  146. of Judah. God had already split the two kingdoms

  147. apart. There was a whole story behind that. But

  148. God had split the two kingdoms, and eventually

  149. Israel was going to fall, and it happened not

  150. long after all of these things with Ahab and

  151. Jehu, the one who God used to bring the judgment

  152. on Ahab and his family. His family became kings

  153. and didn't last for long until eventually the

  154. people of Israel were overtaken. the people of

  155. Judah, God spared them because they did have

  156. some good kings. Now, Israel never had a good

  157. king. All of their kings were bad, every single

  158. one of them. Judah had a few good kings, and

  159. Judah was important because it was going to be

  160. through Judah that the Messiah was going to come,

  161. through the family line of David. Now, David

  162. was a king, and his ancestors were going to follow

  163. after him, and at some point, the scripture tells

  164. us that that this son of David, this descendant

  165. of David, was going to be the Messiah. And he

  166. was going to come from Judah. And this story

  167. shows us that that almost didn't happen. Almost.

  168. Now, Athaliah married one of the kings of Judah

  169. and had a son named Ahaziah. And he was an evil

  170. son, just like... The rest of his family that

  171. he'd come from was evil. And he also was killed.

  172. And when Ahaziah was killed, his mother, Athaliah,

  173. daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, did something that

  174. was pretty horrible. She wanted to be the queen.

  175. And so what she did was she had all of the sons

  176. of Ahaziah killed. Their own grandmother sentenced

  177. them to death. Now, she was the only queen that

  178. Israel ever had, and she was not a good lady.

  179. And she had all of her grandsons killed and put

  180. to death so that she could become queen, except

  181. for one. And Joash was spared by his aunt. His

  182. aunt saw what was going on, and she took Joash,

  183. and she hid him away, and she spared him. Isn't

  184. that beautiful how God works? That Joash is that

  185. link, that if Joash would have been killed, that

  186. family line would have been killed off, but God

  187. is so good and he kept that line of David. He

  188. kept it alive, even through all the evil kings

  189. that were around at the time. God was so faithful

  190. that he spared Joash until Joash became a little

  191. older. He was still a child. I believe he was

  192. seven years old, the text says, when he becomes

  193. king. Well, Athaliah is irate about this, that

  194. Joash has somehow been spared. And Joash does

  195. become king, and Athaliah dies, and her portion

  196. of the story is done. And Joash's portion of

  197. the story begins. And his story begins well.

  198. He starts from a young age. And the husband of

  199. the very aunt that had saved his life, Joiada,

  200. he is a priest. And he begins to kind of pour

  201. into Joash and begin to teach him the ways of

  202. God. And Joiada is a good man. He is a righteous

  203. man. He is a godly man. And he teaches Joash

  204. good and right things that are of the Lord. And

  205. Joash starts off very well. He starts off very

  206. well, and he begins to see to it that the temple

  207. is going to be rebuilt. And there are some people

  208. that are supposed to be in charge of the work,

  209. and they're not doing a good job. But Joash wants

  210. to see to it that God's temple is rebuilt, that

  211. God's people begin to get back to focusing on

  212. God. This is a big problem we see throughout

  213. the Old Testament with Israel and Judah is they

  214. kind of ebb and flow, and they're close to God

  215. for a while, and they're disobedient for a while.

  216. And we can relate to that. Because we do the

  217. same thing. Like there are seasons where we really

  218. do good and there are seasons where we're disobedient.

  219. And sometimes God got their attention and sometimes

  220. God has to get our attention. But Joash was doing

  221. good. He was excited about the Lord. He had been

  222. taught right about the Lord. He was living for

  223. the Lord. He started out as a good king for the

  224. people of Judah. But then something happened

  225. in his life. the one who had been taking care

  226. of him and leading him in the right way, he died.

  227. Now listen to what the scripture says about his

  228. death. In 2 Chronicles 24, verse 16, it says,

    2 Chronicles 24:16

  229. Jehoiada died when he was old and full of days.

  230. He was 130 years old at his death. He was buried

  231. in the city of David. With the kings. Because

  232. he had done what was good in Israel with respect

  233. to God and his temple. Anybody catch where he

  234. was buried? He was buried in the city of David

  235. with the kings. Now this is an honorable burial.

  236. I mean, to be buried with, he was not a king.

  237. And so far as I know. I don't know that there

  238. was anybody else who was buried with the king.

  239. So maybe you can find somebody. I'm not saying

  240. there isn't, but I'm not aware of anybody else.

  241. And if you find somebody else, please tell me.

  242. There possibly could be others. But whether he

  243. was the only one or whether there were others,

  244. we see here with this man of God that he was

  245. honored in the way that he was buried because

  246. he honored God throughout his life. And Joash

  247. had done well as long as he was... mentoring

  248. him and alongside of him. But when Jehoiada died,

  249. the scripture tells us that Joash began to take

  250. advice from others, and they didn't advise him

  251. well. And pretty soon, Joash did not follow the

  252. ways of God. And then we get to the end of Joash's

  253. life, where he had totally gone... The wrong

  254. way. And he's handed over to his enemies and

  255. he doesn't even have an honorable burial. The

  256. man who had mentored him and took care of him,

  257. Jehoiada, he was buried with the kings. But Joash's

  258. life, it's reflected to us that it took a turn

  259. for the worst because of where he was buried.

  260. At the end of his life, where did he end up?

  261. Did he end up in a place of honor? Or did he

  262. end up in a place of dishonor? And the scripture

  263. says that he ended up in a place of dishonor.

  264. Now, Joash's story, I believe, is a good warning

  265. for us. Joash started well, but he did not finish

  266. well. And because he didn't finish well, where

  267. he went at his death was... Not a good place.

  268. And so it is for us. How have we started? How

  269. are we doing? How will we finish? It's a lot

  270. of people in the world that start good, that

  271. hear the word of God and know the word of God.

  272. And maybe they have people in their life that

  273. pour into them. And teach them in the ways of

  274. God and in the word of God. And they do well.

  275. And sometimes we end up getting off track. And

  276. we end up taking advice and following people

  277. that don't have God's interest in mind. And we

  278. start making some bad decisions. And we find

  279. ourselves in a bad spot. It's a miracle that

  280. Joash survived. Of all the things that came before

  281. Joash, of all the events that occurred when he

  282. was a small child, just the fact that God had

  283. took care of him and got him to this place was

  284. a miracle. And maybe that's true for you and

  285. I. That our lives are full of all kinds of details.

  286. Some are good, some are bad, some are really

  287. difficult. And yet here we are. Somehow today

  288. we've... We're here and we're looking at the

  289. Word of God. And I don't believe there's a coincidence

  290. in that. I believe God works in every aspect

  291. of our life. God knows everything that's going

  292. to happen to us. God allows things to happen

  293. to us. Now, we make decisions. And God, being

  294. a gracious God, He doesn't force us to do what

  295. He says. He gives us the option. He gives us

  296. the choice. But sometimes we make the wrong choice.

  297. Sometimes we choose poorly. Sometimes we choose

  298. sin. Sometimes we choose disobedience. And even

  299. though we may have started well, we may not be

  300. running well. Galatians chapter 5 verse 7 says,

    Galatians 5:7

  301. You were running well. Who prevented you from

  302. obeying the truth? Maybe we're not so unlike

  303. Joash. Maybe there's some people in our life

  304. that we begin to associate with and they don't

  305. care anything about the truth of God or about

  306. living in obedience to God's Word. It's a good

  307. chance that whoever we associate with, we're

  308. going to be like them, for better or for worse.

  309. If we associate with people who seek God and

  310. love God and want to follow His commands, then

  311. that's going to impact our life in a positive

  312. way. If we seek people who are going to live

  313. for the world and live for themselves and don't

  314. care about right and wrong, then that's going

  315. to impact us too. Because we're going to begin

  316. to act like those that we associate with. If

  317. we read the words of God and we read the words

  318. of Jesus and we see the life of Jesus, then in

  319. some way we should begin to act a little bit

  320. like Jesus. There should be some love and compassion

  321. and grace and mercy in our life. If we don't

  322. read the words of God, then how can we live by

  323. them? If we're not reading the instructions of

  324. God, then whose instructions are we living by?

  325. The instructions of the world? The instructions

  326. of the devil? The instructions of wickedness?

  327. And so Joash, he started well, but he did not

  328. finish well. It's about how we finish. Some of

  329. you may have watched Super Bowl 51 back in 2017,

  330. I believe it was. Fantastic Super Bowl, if you

  331. were a Patriots fan. The Super Bowl started off

  332. for the Atlanta Falcons, who they were playing

  333. against, started off as good as you could possibly

  334. hope. With three minutes left in the third quarter,

  335. the Atlanta Falcons were up 28 -3. All they had

  336. to do was let the clock run out and have the

  337. parade because they started so well. And in the

  338. last 15 minutes of that ball game, their lead

  339. went from 28 -3 to 28 -9 to 28 -12 to 28 -20

  340. to 28 -28 until eventually they lost 34 -28.

  341. They started well. But they didn't finish well.

  342. They took their foot off the gas. They began

  343. to get a little lax. What about you and I? Have

  344. you started well? Sometimes we get a little lazy.

  345. Sometimes we kind of know God's Word, but we

  346. just become lazy in carrying God's Word out.

  347. Maybe we become lazy in reading God's Word or

  348. pay attention to God's Word. Well, for those

  349. of us who have started running the race, then

  350. let us be those today who shift our focus and

  351. get in gear and point ourselves in the right

  352. direction that we would finish well, that we

  353. would not run the race in vain, but that we would

  354. start following God and that we would finish

  355. our life following God. So that when all is said

  356. and done and the end of our life comes, that

  357. we will be those who have an honorable death

  358. in the presence of God, in the presence of Jesus

  359. Christ. Maybe some of you today haven't started

  360. running the race. Maybe you've never walked in

  361. the way of God. Maybe you've been walking in

  362. your own way. And maybe you know today that that

  363. ain't worked out too good. We're pretty hard

  364. -headed as humans. We like to do the same thing

  365. over and over. And man, our lives can be falling

  366. apart. And we say, I just don't know what's wrong.

  367. And we just keep doing the same things over and

  368. over. And we keep getting the same results. And

  369. maybe in your life today, maybe you've never

  370. followed the words of God. Maybe you've never

  371. followed Jesus Christ. Because the very one that

  372. God said was going to come. was his son, Jesus

  373. Christ. He was going to be the Messiah that was

  374. going to forgive our sins and save our souls.

  375. And that was all part of God's plan. And man,

  376. it was on the fringes of not being able to happen.

  377. If Joash would have only been killed. But Joash

  378. wasn't killed. He was spared. Because God's plans

  379. were not going to be thwarted. And the Messiah

  380. did come. And it's through Jesus Christ today

  381. that he calls us to a better way, to a narrow

  382. path, a hard path to walk, but a path that's

  383. full of joy. Because the burdens that we have

  384. lived under trying to do it our way, they are

  385. so heavy. Man, they are heavy. But Jesus said,

  386. if you're weary and burdened, you come to me

  387. and I will give you rest. What a beautiful...

  388. Beautiful scripture. I mean, that is one of my

  389. favorite scriptures, as you would know, because

  390. I say it all the time. But man, it is so good.

  391. And I need to hear a lot. Maybe you don't. But

  392. maybe you do, because maybe life is stressful

  393. for you. And maybe the burden of life is stressful.

  394. And things are just hard, and it wears you out

  395. physically and emotionally. We get wore out.

  396. And that's why Jesus' call to us is so beautiful.

  397. He says, whatever your struggles are, whatever

  398. your sins are, I just want you to come to me

  399. and go and sin no more. And maybe some of you

  400. today, you've never trusted in Jesus Christ.

  401. Maybe today you just feel like you're missing

  402. something and you feel the shame, you feel the

  403. heartache of your sin. Would you just go to Jesus

  404. today and just pray and ask the Lord to forgive

  405. you? And just accept Jesus as your Savior. It

  406. ain't no certain words you got to say. It ain't

  407. no hoops you got to jump through. It's just you

  408. got to give your heart to the Lord. Say, God,

  409. with my heart, I love you. And I know you love

  410. me. And I know I'm a sinner. And I know I need

  411. to be forgiven. And I know that Jesus came to

  412. do that for me. That's all it takes to follow

  413. Jesus. That's it. That God wants our heart. And

  414. when we follow Jesus, we've started the race.

  415. And Lord willing, we start well. But I hope that

  416. we finish well. And maybe for some of us today,

  417. we have started the race. We've trusted in Jesus

  418. Christ. We know who he is. But maybe we're not

  419. running too well. Maybe we're not so unlike Joash.

  420. Maybe things started good for us. Maybe we can

  421. look back at our life and see that, man, it's

  422. amazing that God got me through this point, through

  423. all the things that should have got me. There's

  424. no reason that some of us should be here, that

  425. God has been gracious to us. He spared us from

  426. our foolish decisions, and he saved us physically,

  427. and he saved us through so much and provided

  428. for us, and it's nothing but God that has brought

  429. us here where we are. But maybe where we are

  430. today, We're here, praise the Lord, but maybe

  431. we're not where we need to be. Maybe there are

  432. times people in our life that really poured into

  433. us the word of God and taught us the things of

  434. God and we lived according to those things and

  435. we know the joy of that, but maybe we've lost

  436. some of that joy because maybe we've gotten on

  437. the wrong track. Joe Ash, he got on the wrong

  438. track. He started off so good and so on fire

  439. for the Lord. If you're on the wrong track today,

  440. I've got good news for you. You can get on the

  441. right track. You don't have to end your life

  442. on the wrong track. You don't have to end your

  443. life in sin. You don't have to live your life

  444. in disobedience to God. God knows that we are

  445. so weak. He knows that we are so weak. And yet

  446. he loves us anyway, and there's forgiveness there

  447. for you today. I want you to know that, that

  448. God loves you, that Jesus loves you. He loved

  449. you enough to forgive you of your sins the last

  450. time you asked, and he still loves you that much

  451. today, that he would forgive you of your sins

  452. today if you would only seek him. Maybe today

  453. you realize you are on the wrong path. What's

  454. going to be said of you when you die? Will people

  455. say nice things about you and mean it? I say

  456. and mean it because at a funeral, everybody's

  457. got to say something nice. But people know who

  458. we are to some degree. People know what our life's

  459. like. Will we be one who is like Jehoiada who

  460. had an honorable burial? Or will we be one who's

  461. like Joash that was buried but... not with those

  462. of honor, not with those men of God, but with

  463. the rest. The choices we make, the way we live,

  464. will determine where we spend our life after

  465. death, whether we spend it in the presence of

  466. God or whether we spend it apart from God. I

  467. don't know what hell's going to look like. I

  468. don't know what hell's going to be like. But

  469. I know it ain't going to be good. Where will

  470. we be after death? That depends on the choices

  471. we make. I hope today that we would choose Jesus.

  472. And today, if you are one who has chose Jesus,

  473. praise the Lord. If you're walking with him,

  474. then you keep walking. If you've strayed off

  475. the narrow path into that road that leads to

  476. destruction, then praise the Lord. It's not too

  477. late today. You're here. Man, God has brought

  478. us here. Here he gives us his word. He gives

  479. us this beautiful story. He gave Joash a chance.

  480. He didn't make the most of it. What about you

  481. and I? Let's pray. God, we come to you. We thank

  482. you for this beautiful story. We thank you for

  483. your word. We thank you for your example. And

  484. I pray, dear Lord, that we would learn, God,

  485. that we would not just be those who start good

  486. and do pretty good for a while, but that we would

  487. run the race with endurance, dear Lord, that

  488. we would trust you and seek you. We thank you

  489. for Jesus Christ for just showing us the power

  490. of your love and your mercy and your grace that

  491. even through this, dear Lord, you allowed King

  492. Jesus to come through this bloodline. And it's

  493. because of that we have reason to rejoice today.

  494. If there's any that don't know Jesus, I pray

  495. today that in this moment, they're repenting

  496. of their sins, they're trusting Him. And for

  497. those of us who do, God, I pray that we would

  498. make sure we're running well. And I ask these

  499. things in Jesus' name. Amen.
