  1. Psalm 105, verse 12. Let's pray and we'll get

    Psalms 105:12

  2. started. God, we come to you tonight. We thank

  3. you for your good word. And I pray that your

  4. Holy Spirit would help us to see your faithfulness,

  5. dear Lord. To see time and again how you are

  6. good to your people. In the Old Testament. We

  7. see so many examples, dear Lord, in the New Testament

  8. and our own lives, God. We see time and time

  9. again how good you are to your people. And so,

  10. God, I pray tonight that we would know that you're

  11. a God that will not leave us or forsake us, but

  12. you are a God who desires to take care of us,

  13. to stand with us, to provide for us, dear Lord.

  14. So I pray that we just would feel your strength

  15. and your presence, God, that we would just stand

  16. firm and be encouraged by these words tonight.

  17. And I ask these things in Jesus' name. Amen.

  18. Now, throughout this Psalm 105, we see some examples

  19. of God's faithfulness. And really, we start with

  20. Abraham, and the psalmist kind of makes their

  21. way through some of these early days of Israel.

  22. And it's a call to remembrance. That's really

  23. what we looked at last week in these first...

  24. In a few verses, we see this call to give thanks

  25. to Yahweh, to call on His name. And then in verse

  26. 5, to remember the wonderful works He has done.

  27. And of course, the Scripture is full of wonderful

  28. works that God has done. From the beginning of

  29. the Bible to the end of the Bible, we see...

  30. wonderful works that God has done. And last week

  31. we saw that God was faithful to his people, that

  32. he had made a promise to Abraham that all nations

  33. would be blessed through Abraham. And in the

  34. short term, this was going to mean God's people

  35. were going to be established through Abraham

  36. and they were eventually going to get a land

  37. that was going to be their own. And in the long

  38. term, it was pointing to Jesus Christ, that not

  39. just the Jewish people were going to be blessed

  40. by God. Indeed, they were God's people, and they

  41. were chosen to be the means by which the Messiah

  42. would come. And so God established his people

  43. so that he could establish a way to bring about

  44. Jesus Christ, our Savior, and he fulfilled all

  45. of those promises. Now, of course, this psalm

  46. is not... Not looking too far out to Jesus, but

  47. in the short term, it's reminding us that God

  48. did establish his people through Abraham. And

  49. he promised to bring them into the promised land,

  50. and God had done just that. He had brought his

  51. people into the promised land. And that's what

  52. we looked at last week. That's the first reference

  53. we see, a reminder we see of God. fulfilling

  54. his promises, that he was faithful to his people.

  55. And tonight in verse 12, we're going to start

  56. and we're going to look at the next instance,

  57. the next reminder of God's faithfulness. Verse

  58. 12, when they were few in number, that is God's

  59. people, when they were few in number, very few

  60. indeed, and temporary residents in Canaan, wandering

  61. from nation to nation and from one kingdom to

  62. another, he allowed no one to oppress them. He

  63. rebuked kings on their behalf. Do not touch my

  64. anointed ones or harm my prophets. Okay, so when

  65. God first began to establish his nation of Israel,

  66. it started with Abraham and it began to grow.

  67. And even though they were God's people in a foreign

  68. land, God continued to protect them. And ultimately

  69. they were going to grow into a big nation. But

  70. in the meantime, God was... faithful to Abraham,

  71. and he was faithful to Abraham's descendants,

  72. and God continued to watch out for them and to

  73. protect them and to take care of them. And then

  74. we move on to a beautiful example of what I think

  75. is one of the greatest stories in all of the

  76. Bible. If you've never read the story of Joseph

  77. before, you can find that in Genesis, starting

  78. in chapter 37, and pretty much from there to

  79. the end of the book of Genesis is the story.

  80. of Joseph, and it's a beautiful story. We spent

  81. several weeks on it a few years ago and went

  82. through that whole few chapters, kind of breaking

  83. it down. You can find that online if you want

  84. to go back and listen to that series on our church

  85. website. But I encourage you to read that story

  86. and read those chapters. It's a great story,

  87. and we're going to talk about it as we go through

  88. these scriptures here. In verse 16. He called

  89. down famine against the land and destroyed the

  90. entire food supply. He had sent a man ahead of

  91. them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave. They hurt

  92. his feet with shackles. His neck was put in an

  93. iron collar until the time his prediction came

  94. true. The word of the Lord tested him. The king

  95. sent for him and released him. The ruler of peoples

  96. set him free. He made him master of his household,

  97. ruler over all his possessions, binding his officials

  98. at will and instructing the elders. Now, one

  99. reason why I really like this story is I think

  100. it's a good reminder to us that God works in

  101. ways that do not always make sense. In verse

  102. 17, it says, he sent a man ahead of them. That

  103. is, there was going to be a famine in the land,

  104. and God sent a man ahead of them. Well, to really

  105. appreciate what exactly took place, what's being

  106. referenced here, we need to refresh ourself with

  107. this story of Joseph. Now, Joseph had some brothers,

  108. and they didn't really like Joseph. Joseph was

  109. the favorite, and Joseph had had some dreams.

  110. And he told his brothers those dreams. He said,

  111. I had a sheaf of wheat, or I think it was wheat,

  112. and your sheaves were all bound down to my sheaves.

  113. And they said, you think one day we're going

  114. to bow down to you? And then he had another dream,

  115. similarly, about the moon and the stars. And

  116. again, a reference that one day everybody in

  117. Joseph's family would bow down to him. Well,

  118. his brothers didn't care for this dream at all,

  119. and they didn't like him at all. And so, long

  120. story short, they decided to sell him into slavery.

  121. And good riddance, they thought. They sold their

  122. brother Joseph into slavery. They killed an animal.

  123. They put the blood on his cloak, and they took

  124. it to their father. And they said, hey, look

  125. here. Guess something got Joseph. And, of course,

  126. his father was just really upset about what had

  127. taken place. But nevertheless... God was going

  128. to use this horrible situation for his good.

  129. Now, it doesn't seem very good when your own

  130. brothers capture you and set you as a slave off

  131. to a foreign land. But God knew what he was doing.

  132. God was, as the scripture says here, was sending

  133. a man ahead of them. Now, Joseph's story, it

  134. was kind of up and down, but it wasn't good times.

  135. It took years for his story to unfold. Ultimately,

  136. he was sold to somebody in Egypt. And throughout

  137. Joseph's story, we see a theme. And that is that

  138. God was with Joseph. And God blessed everything

  139. Joseph did. God blessed. And so even when he

  140. was sold into slavery, he pretty soon worked

  141. his way up to second in command at Potiphar's

  142. house, the first person he was a slave for. Through

  143. a series of lies that were told on him, he was

  144. imprisoned again. I'm skipping over some of the

  145. best parts of the story. You have to read it

  146. yourself. But he was thrown into prison. And

  147. again, the Lord was with him and the Lord blessed

  148. him. And lo and behold, he became a high up in

  149. the prison under the warden. The warden entrusted

  150. him with certain things and privileges because

  151. he was a man that was blessed by God. But it

  152. just so happened. That the prison that he was

  153. thrown into was the same prison where the enemies

  154. of Pharaoh and the ones that Pharaoh didn't like

  155. were thrown. And it's there that he met a couple

  156. of Pharaoh's servants who Pharaoh had thrown

  157. into prison. And they had some dreams which Joseph

  158. was able to interpret for them. And one of them

  159. got to go back and serve the king, serve Pharaoh.

  160. The other one Pharaoh had killed. But Joseph

  161. told the one that he interpreted the dream for,

  162. he said, hey, look, when you get back to Pharaoh,

  163. put in a good word for me because I ain't done

  164. anything to deserve being here. But a long time

  165. passed. And then eventually that guy remembered

  166. when Pharaoh had a dream, hey, wait a minute,

  167. there was this guy in prison. And again, Joseph's

  168. on the move. And guess what? Again, the Lord

  169. is with Joseph. And Joseph becomes second in

  170. command. and all of Egypt. Now, a lot of time

  171. had passed by. It's a lot that had taken place

  172. that God was going to use Joseph to provide for

  173. his people. About over 20 years had passed from

  174. the time that his brothers had sold him into

  175. slavery from the time that he was going to be

  176. reunited with them. But God sent a famine on

  177. the land. Of course, God had blessed Joseph,

  178. and Joseph knew how to prepare for the famine

  179. and advised Pharaoh how to prepare for the famine.

  180. And lo and behold, when the famine hit the land,

  181. Egypt had an abundance of food, and no one else

  182. did. No one else in the land had food, and times

  183. were getting hard. And guess who showed up in

  184. Egypt and needed food? It was Joseph's own brothers.

  185. Now, this is a good example of a bad situation

  186. that God uses for good. God knew what he needed

  187. to do. He knew that that famine was going to

  188. come. He knew that his people needed to be provided

  189. for. And so to provide for his people, God allowed

  190. Joseph to be sold into slavery, to be put into

  191. prison. To ultimately make his way to a foreign

  192. country and be second in command so that God

  193. could carry out his purpose. And maybe, maybe

  194. God does that in our life sometimes. There may

  195. be things that we go through that are really

  196. hard. I suspect that... what Joseph had to go

  197. through was really hard. It's not easy when your

  198. own family turns on you. It's not easy being

  199. a servant in a foreign land. It's not easy being

  200. in prison. None of those things are easy. Being

  201. separated from your family, but yet God knew

  202. what he was doing. And even there, he allowed

  203. some things that were not easy, that were tough,

  204. so that he could use Joseph for the good of his

  205. people, for the good of his... And maybe God

  206. is doing that in our life. And maybe it's good

  207. for us to look at stories like this and be reminded.

  208. What's the point of this psalm? It's to remember

  209. what God has done. To remember how gracious God

  210. was to Joseph and to his people. And this is

  211. a beautiful story. It's a beautiful reminder.

  212. And maybe we need to be reminded tonight that

  213. God is good. Because maybe tonight we're in a

  214. bad place, and we don't see how any good can

  215. come from this. Now, I don't know what Joseph

  216. felt. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what

  217. he felt. He probably felt like, well, I'm going

  218. to be in prison the rest of my life. I'm going

  219. to be a servant in Potiphar's house the rest

  220. of my life. His situation was not good, and it

  221. didn't seem good at the time, and he probably

  222. didn't know if he was going to have a future.

  223. But God knew what was taking place. And God had

  224. him just where he wanted him to be. But that

  225. probably is not where Joseph wanted to be. And

  226. I think God still works in our life in the same

  227. way. Sometimes God puts us in places where he

  228. wants us to be. And it's not where we want to

  229. be. And it's hard for us to see how any good

  230. can come from it. But it can. But here's what

  231. we have to remember. We can read this story of

  232. Joseph. You can go back and turn to Genesis 37.

  233. You can read through the whole story. And even

  234. if you're a slow reader, it won't take you an

  235. hour. And you see the beginning. Man, he was

  236. sold into slavery. Man, he's second in command,

  237. provides for his family a happy ending. But that

  238. happy ending took over 20 years. And that's the

  239. part we don't like. Because we'd like to be able...

  240. In some seasons of our life, it just turned the

  241. page real quick, right? But in the case of Joseph,

  242. man, that story had a happy ending, but it didn't

  243. have a quick ending. And so maybe there's a point

  244. in our life that some of us are at now where

  245. it's a really hard season and we don't see the

  246. happy ending, but we need to know that God is

  247. good. If we're trusting God, that God will be

  248. with us. He was with Joseph every step of the

  249. way. He took care of Joseph every step of the

  250. way, albeit not in great situations. He was a

  251. slave for Potiphar and in prison. Not the best

  252. situations in the world, but nevertheless, God

  253. was with him and ultimately God delivered him.

  254. And so maybe find some encouragement in that

  255. tonight. Maybe you're not in a bad place tonight.

  256. Maybe you're in a good place. Praise the Lord.

  257. Maybe you're doing good and you're in a good

  258. season and things aren't hard right now. Maybe

  259. you've been able to see how God's working in

  260. your life and just what He's doing and it all

  261. makes sense and you just praise Him tonight.

  262. But maybe you're scratching your head saying,

  263. man, there's some things in my life and they

  264. don't make sense. I just don't know how God can

  265. use this for good. But God, He works in some

  266. ways that we don't understand. He sees the big

  267. picture. He puts all the pieces into place just

  268. where they need to be. He's put pieces into place

  269. probably in our life years ago. So that they

  270. would fall into place at just the right time.

  271. And that's what he had done in the story of Joseph.

  272. And I think God still does that in our story

  273. today. So let us be reminded and encouraged that

  274. God is good. That he's fulfilled every promise.

  275. He took care of his people. He took care of Abraham.

  276. He took them to the land he told them he was

  277. going to give them. He provided for them once

  278. they got into that land, even in a time of famine.

  279. Everything God has promised, it has come true.

  280. From the very beginning of Abraham all the way

  281. to Jesus Christ, every promise that God has made

  282. has come true. And so he is a trustworthy and

  283. a dependable God. And we need to know that today,

  284. wherever you are. In your life, no matter how

  285. good or how bad it may be, God is trustworthy

  286. and he is good. And just as he was with his people

  287. and delivered them all those years ago, so he'll

  288. deliver us today. Let's pray. God, we thank you

  289. for your good word. I pray that you would help

  290. us to be reminded of your goodness and your faithfulness,

  291. dear Lord. We certainly don't deserve it. You're

  292. not good to us because we are just so awesome.

  293. Dear Lord, that's not the case, but we come to

  294. you. even though we are weak and sinful. And

  295. God, sometimes we just, we get ourselves into

  296. the messes that we are in. And that's not good,

  297. dear Lord. We're not pretending like it is, but

  298. we just need you to help us, God. Even when we've

  299. made a mess of things, I pray that we would repent

  300. and that we would seek you. I pray that we would

  301. be reminded of your goodness and your strength

  302. and your power again and again through the pages

  303. of Scripture. That as we see how you have taken

  304. care of your people, These couple of examples

  305. we've looked at over the last couple of weeks,

  306. that we would be reminded to know that you would

  307. take care of us, dear Lord. We don't know what

  308. the future may hold. And just like with Joseph,

  309. dear Lord, our future may have some really difficult

  310. times. But God, let us not forget you. And we'll

  311. know that you have not forgotten us. And I ask

  312. these things in Jesus' name. Amen.
