  1. in Psalm 106. Psalm 106. We concluded Psalm 105

  2. last week. Psalm 106. We've gotten to some longer

  3. psalms, way more than we could cover in a night.

  4. Especially, we probably are going to be pretty

  5. slow getting through Psalm 106. It's a lot of

  6. passages that are referenced in there that we'll

  7. probably go back and revisit some of those stories

  8. as we get to them. But tonight we're going to

  9. get a pretty good chunk. We're going to try to

  10. get through 13 verses. This is likely a Psalm

  11. of David. At least the beginning words of it

  12. are words that are written by David. And so it's

  13. possible he wrote the whole thing. It's possible

  14. somebody else wrote parts of it. We really don't

  15. know for sure. It doesn't matter too much. We

  16. can understand what's going on regardless of

  17. who wrote it. The last psalm we looked at was

  18. a psalm that really talked about God's faithfulness.

  19. Psalm 105 talked about how God was faithful to

  20. fulfill the promises that he had made to his

  21. people, that he promised to bless Abraham, and

  22. he did, and he created the nation of Israel,

  23. and he promised to take them into the... a land

  24. that was their own, and he did. And he was faithful

  25. to bring them out of Egypt. He provided for them

  26. in the famine. And even when they got in Egypt

  27. and things got tough, he was faithful to deliver

  28. them. And so Psalm 105 tells us about the faithfulness

  29. of God. And then when we shift to Psalm 106,

  30. it's kind of just the opposite. It tells us about

  31. the unfaithfulness of God's people. and that's

  32. what we're going to see a little bit of tonight.

  33. So let's pray, and then we'll get started. God,

  34. we come to you. We thank you for your good word,

  35. and I pray that we would get something from it,

  36. that you would help us not to be worried or distracted

  37. thinking about things of the world, but just

  38. for a few moments we can think about you. I pray

  39. that you'd hide me behind the cross, that I'd

  40. preach and teach in a way that brings glory and

  41. honor to you, that this word would be a word

  42. that calls us to praise you. that causes us to

  43. examine our own life, dear Lord, that maybe we

  44. can learn something from the Israelites, dear

  45. Lord, that we're not much better than they are.

  46. And I pray, God, that we might see areas where

  47. we're not trusting you and praising you as we

  48. should and maybe start trusting you a little

  49. more. And I ask these things in Jesus' name.

  50. Amen. All right, this psalm starts off very similar

  51. to Psalm 105. It starts off with words of praise.

  52. Verse 1, Psalm 106, verse 1. Hallelujah, give

    Psalms 106:1

  53. thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His faithful

  54. love endures forever. Who can declare the Lord's

  55. mighty acts or proclaim all the praise due his

  56. name? How happy are those who uphold justice,

  57. who practice righteousness. At all times. Okay,

  58. so we're Pretty basic praise language here. Praise

  59. the Lord, he's good. That's what the psalm is

  60. telling us. Again, that's the same thing we saw

  61. at the beginning of Psalm 105. It's something

  62. that we see plenty of people do throughout Scripture,

  63. but it's a good reminder for us that we need

  64. to praise the Lord. Life gets hard, it gets stressful,

  65. things are really difficult, and sometime in

  66. the midst of our struggles and our pains and

  67. all the stuff that we're up against in this world,

  68. Sometimes we forget to praise the Lord, but we

  69. need to remember to do that, that even when things

  70. are tough, God's worthy of our praise. Continuing

  71. on in verse 4, Remember me, Lord, when you show

  72. favor to your people. Come to me with your salvation,

  73. so that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen

  74. ones. Rejoice in the joy of your nation, and

  75. boast about your heritage. Okay, a call to remembrance.

  76. Lord, remember me. Remember me, Lord. We want

  77. to remember the Lord to praise him. But there

  78. are plenty of times that we ask the Lord to remember

  79. us. Show me favor, Lord. Let me experience your

  80. salvation. That's a good prayer. That's a prayer

  81. that we all need. Okay, God, don't forget me.

  82. I cannot do anything without you. I need your

  83. strength, God. I'm doomed without you. I need

  84. you to come to my rescue. I need you to be my

  85. salvation. Just good language of, God, I want

  86. to remember you, and God, I want to ask you that

  87. you remember me. All right? Verse 6. Both we

  88. and our fathers have sinned. We have done wrong

  89. and have acted wickedly. Okay, so now we see

  90. a shift. We see a praise of God, a call to God,

  91. hey, remember me, be my salvation. And why is

  92. that? Well, because we sin. And that's what's

  93. being acknowledged in the psalm. He says, look,

  94. I've sinned, we've sinned. As a nation, Israel

  95. has sinned. The ones that came before us sinned.

  96. And we've done all kinds of wrongs. And so here's

  97. the problem that we have too. That we pray to

  98. God, we praise God, but we have to come to God

  99. because we are sinners. We're not deserving of

  100. God's grace. And we have to acknowledge our sin.

  101. And that's exactly what the psalmist does here.

  102. He acknowledges not just his sin, but really

  103. the sin of the nation as a whole. That he acknowledges,

  104. look, God, I know we have not done right by you.

  105. And not just once or twice, but time and again,

  106. over a long period of time. Now, I believe that

  107. that's true of plenty of nations throughout the

  108. world. There are plenty of nations in this world.

  109. How many of them seek to serve the Lord and live

  110. according to his will? Well, not many. Maybe

  111. at one point we would say the United States did,

  112. but I don't even know that we can say that now.

  113. There's a lot of people in this country that

  114. don't seek the Lord, that don't seek his will,

  115. that don't care about his word in the least.

  116. And so when we pray not only over our sins, perhaps

  117. this is a good reminder for us to pray over the

  118. sins of our land. that God would have mercy on

  119. us because Lord knows we are deserving of God's

  120. wrath. And if God pulled out and said, hey, I'm

  121. going to take any protection or blessing off

  122. of you, then he'd be right to do so. And we see

  123. occasion in Scripture where he does that. And

  124. perhaps he will do that one day. He's been good

  125. to us. He's blessed us as a nation. But how long

  126. will God continue to bless us when we continue

  127. to promote sin and celebrate sin? I don't know

  128. the answer to that question. Here in this psalm,

  129. the psalmist recognizes not only that he was

  130. a sinner, but that the people were a sinner.

  131. And this is nothing new, that God's people had

  132. sinned for a long time before him and will continue

  133. to sin for a long time after. But he calls out

  134. and he acknowledges that sin. God, we've sinned

  135. against you. And I believe that we could all

  136. agree that... that that's the case for us here.

  137. And not just us. I mean, there's plenty of nations

  138. in the world that sinned against God. But I believe

  139. any people that would call out to God, wherever

  140. they are, that if they would call out to God

  141. and seek Him, that they would experience His

  142. blessings. Because when you take God out of everything,

  143. there's no good that's going to come from it.

  144. Because God is good, and when God is removed,

  145. all that's left is the bad. But any people, no

  146. matter how small or how large, that would seek

  147. God and call out to Him, You instantly experience

  148. the blessings of God. When you seek his wisdom

  149. and you begin to live according to his ways,

  150. then life gets better. We could probably all

  151. acknowledge that in our own life. When we're

  152. living in obedience to God, man, our life's going

  153. better. We feel better. Things just work better.

  154. And when we start living for ourself and living

  155. in disobedience, things are not good. Our relationships

  156. aren't good. Our attitude's not good. The things

  157. we do aren't good. And so all that's a result

  158. of disobedience. And we see plenty of that, not

  159. only in our own lives sometimes, but we see it

  160. in our nation. And Lord willing, maybe there'll

  161. be a change. That should be our prayer, that

  162. God will pour out His Spirit on us, that there'd

  163. be a revival in the land, that people in this

  164. country would realize, hey, what we need more

  165. than anything is God. Verse 7. Our fathers in

  166. Egypt did not grasp, Isn't that something? He

  167. says that my descendants came before me. They

  168. didn't understand the wonderful works of God.

  169. They didn't appreciate all that God had done.

  170. God had come in, and he had delivered them and

  171. provided for them, and he had taken care of them

  172. in every way, and they failed to realize that.

  173. But what does it say in verse 8? Yet he saved

  174. them because of his name to make his power known.

  175. Now, we see that when God is bringing punishment

  176. on the Egyptians, he says, look. I'm doing this

  177. so that you'll know me, so that everybody will

  178. know me, so that his own people would know him,

  179. so the people of Egypt would know he is God.

  180. All those plagues he sent, it should have been

  181. abundantly clear to the Egyptians and to the

  182. people of God that he was God. And you would

  183. think, after seeing such amazing things with

  184. their own eyes, that they would have been like,

  185. holy smokes, whatever this God says, I ain't

  186. questioning him. But they didn't. They failed

  187. to really appreciate the wonders of his works.

  188. But even still, God was faithful. Now, God was

  189. ready after he delivered them out. They made

  190. the golden calf. He was ready to wipe them out.

  191. And Moses says, hold up, God. Have patience with

  192. them. Don't wipe them out or else the other nations

  193. will see you and they'll say, well, what kind

  194. of God is this that brought them out just to

  195. destroy them? And so God showed restraint and

  196. didn't give them the punishment that they deserved.

  197. And praise the Lord that He's a God of restraint.

  198. That He doesn't give us the punishment that we

  199. deserve. Because we're no better. Because we've

  200. experienced the works of God. We've seen His

  201. wonderful grace and we've seen how He's worked

  202. in our life. And sometimes we too, we just, we

  203. kind of think, we don't appreciate it, we don't

  204. think much about it, we don't celebrate it. We

  205. praise Him today and then tomorrow, the next

  206. day's troubles comes and we quickly... Forget

  207. about God, and that's exactly what Israel did,

  208. and that's what we do too sometimes. Verse 9.

  209. He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up. He led

  210. them through the depths as through a desert.

  211. He saved them from the hand of the adversary.

  212. He redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.

  213. Water covered their foes. Not one of them remained.

  214. That had to have been a marvelous sight for them

  215. to have experienced. Now, they had already seen

  216. God do a lot of stuff while they were in Egypt.

  217. I mean, those plagues, that was no joke. And

  218. that God was able to protect them and deliver

  219. them, that was pretty phenomenal. But then a

  220. whole group of people, possibly a couple of million,

  221. it would have been a lot at this point in time.

  222. We don't know the exact number, but you have

  223. a lot of people that are standing there in front

  224. of a sea. And they're trapped. There is nowhere

  225. for them to go. They have been enslaved all these

  226. years. They finally get away from their enemy

  227. only to have their backs against the wall. Egyptians

  228. coming toward them on one side. The Red Sea is

  229. in front of them on the other side. There's really

  230. no hope for them except for God, who does a miraculous

  231. thing. He parts the Red Sea so that they cross

  232. on dry land. Now, how God did that, it's a...

  233. It's a miracle. It's unexplainable. I've seen

  234. people before say, oh, maybe he did this, and

  235. maybe he sent this wind, and maybe he sent that.

  236. Well, I don't know that there's any ordinary

  237. explanation that God would have been able to

  238. dry up a sea rather quickly and there be dry

  239. ground to cross on. But yet that's the power

  240. of God, and the people of God got to witness

  241. that. They got to witness that. That's pretty

  242. phenomenal. that they got to see that, and they

  243. walked through the Red Sea on dry land, and as

  244. their enemies chased them, and they got into

  245. the Red Sea, as Israel was coming out of the

  246. other side, and God released the waters, and

  247. they covered up their enemies, boom, his people

  248. were delivered just that quick. That's a phenomenal

  249. thing for somebody to experience. And so what

  250. did they do? What we see when we go back and

  251. read in Exodus, I believe chapter 15, that there's

  252. a song of praise, that they are praising the

  253. Lord. Listen to what it says we see in the next

  254. verse, verse 12. Then they believed his promises

  255. and sang his praise. Well, praise the Lord. Shouldn't

  256. we do that? When we have seen the Lord work and

  257. experienced how he loves us and has given us

  258. grace and we see even miracles today, maybe not

  259. see his part, but I believe we see God heal people

  260. and I believe we see God work and work things

  261. together in ways that we just know that it's

  262. God looking out for us. And shouldn't we rejoice

  263. and praise the Lord? And that's exactly what

  264. they do. What a beautiful example. I believe

  265. it's in verse 21 that they are praising the Lord

  266. in Exodus chapter 15. And then you go and you

    Exodus 15 chapter mention

  267. flip down to verse 24. And guess what they're

  268. doing by verse 23 verses. They just saw him part

  269. a sea. And then they say, we ain't got no water

  270. to drink. I don't know what we're going to do.

  271. Now they should have just said, hey, we just

  272. saw God part a red sea. We ain't got no water,

  273. but it doesn't matter. Well, he probably got

  274. some Coca -Colas over there for us under a rock.

  275. Whatever it is, we're not going to worry. But

  276. instead, they complain because I don't know what

  277. we're going to do now. We was in Egypt. Things

  278. were really good. Now look at us. We're over

  279. this sea. We ain't got nothing to drink. And

  280. they're praising God one minute, and it doesn't

  281. take very long, and they start to complain. And

  282. we see that shift here in this passage too in

  283. verse 12. Then they believed his promises and

  284. sang his praise. And then what's the next verse

  285. say? They soon forgot his works and would not

  286. wait for his counsel. Now, holy smokes. Now,

  287. we look at that and we think about what they

  288. did and we laugh and it would be funny if we

  289. didn't do the same thing. But the fact of the

  290. matter is, are we not guilty of that sometimes?

  291. Maybe we are. Maybe we sang God's praises today.

  292. And then something happens in our life tomorrow

  293. and all of a sudden we start fretting. Like we

  294. just, we get amnesia. Like we get, we get like

  295. blessing amnesia. Like we forget how much God

  296. has blessed us and all of a sudden it's like,

  297. I don't know what I'm going to do. And we got

  298. a lifetime full of ways that God has delivered

  299. us. But oh how quickly we forget. And that's

  300. exactly what God's people Israel did. It says

  301. that they soon forgot his works. and would not

  302. wait on his counsel. They were so impatient.

  303. Moses goes up the mountain. They say, where's

  304. he at? He's not coming back. Well, I guess we

  305. need to make a god. Boom. Get all their gold

  306. jewelry. They make a gold calf. They say, here

  307. it is. This is the god that brought us out of

  308. Egypt. Oh, really? Well, where was that gold

  309. calf when the water split? He was non -existent.

  310. And how quickly they got impatient because God

  311. wasn't doing things the way that they wanted

  312. him to do it. You read through the story of them

  313. as they come out of Egypt. Well, they ain't got

  314. water to drink. Well, they get tired of the food

  315. that they're eating. Oh, Moses is taking too

  316. long on the mountain. Everything. We want it

  317. now. We want it now. We want it now. We want

  318. it now. And see, we think that's the result of

  319. having smartphones and fast internet that we

  320. just get used to having and wanting everything

  321. now. But they didn't have a single smartphone

  322. or a single internet. And guess what? They were

  323. impatient and didn't want to wait on anything.

  324. And we need to learn from that. Because maybe

  325. we say, I do the same thing. Okay, well, it's

  326. good for us to acknowledge that. But we don't

  327. ever want to be okay with that. We want to look

  328. at this and we want to say, okay, I need you

  329. to check me, dear Lord. I need you to look at

  330. my heart. I need you to help me to look at my

  331. heart and at my actions. And God, if that's in

  332. my life, I don't want to be that way. And help

  333. me to remember. And I think that's why stories

  334. like this and psalms like this are good. It's

  335. just a reminder of past events that we can learn

  336. from, good or bad sometimes in the Bible. It's

  337. a reminder sometimes of good things that God

  338. has praised for and then a reminder of bad things

  339. that God's people do. And that's what we see

  340. here is that they too quickly forgot of God's

  341. power, of his work, and they didn't wait for

  342. his counsel. Now maybe there's... Just that one

  343. little thing right there, that one little last

  344. part of that verse, that might be enough for

  345. us to chew on this week and really think about.

  346. Like, is there something going on in our life

  347. right now that maybe we need to wait on the counsel

  348. of the Lord? It seems like every decision in

  349. my life, it's like you've got to make it right

  350. now. This deal's not going to be here if you

  351. don't get it now, if you don't do this thing

  352. now. The decision has to be made today. It's

  353. like... So many decisions in our life, we feel

  354. like they have to be right now, and maybe sometimes

  355. they do. But maybe sometimes we just need to

  356. say, okay, have I sought the counsel of the Lord

  357. in this? And we really don't want to do that

  358. because sometimes it takes a while. Because we

  359. like to just say, okay, God, should I do X, Y,

  360. and Z? Amen. And we want within five seconds

  361. God to say, Yes or no. Like either one, we just

  362. want to know. But it usually doesn't work that

  363. quick. It's usually some waiting, some seeking

  364. of the Lord's counsel. And God's people, Israel,

  365. didn't do that. They didn't wait on the counsel

  366. of the Lord. Instead, they did it their way.

  367. And doing it our way usually fails. I will say

  368. it always fails, I suppose. So maybe today we

  369. need to pause for a second and we need to say,

  370. okay, even in these first few verses, we have

  371. some great reminders here, some great example

  372. here to praise the Lord, to seek His forgiveness

  373. in our life and seek His mercy for us as a people,

  374. for us to recall the ways that He's worked in

  375. our life and for us not to be so quick to forget

  376. those ways but to continue to seek His counsel

  377. in everything. Let's pray. God, we come to you.

  378. We thank you for your word. I pray that you would

  379. help us to listen to this word and take it to

  380. heart, dear Lord, that we would live by it. We

  381. thank you today, dear Lord, that we can praise

  382. you, that you are worthy of our praise, dear

  383. Lord, that you have blessed us and taken care

  384. of us in so many ways. And the greatest way is

  385. through Jesus Christ, that you've sent Jesus

  386. Christ to... Be our Savior to die on the cross

  387. for the forgiveness of our sins, dear Lord, that

  388. we can have grace and we can have mercy. And

  389. that alone, dear Lord, is worthy of praise. But

  390. dear Lord, you do so much more. Not only do you

  391. give us salvation for eternity, but you just,

  392. you bless us in so many ways in this life and

  393. you take care of us and I pray that you help

  394. us not to miss those ways and to praise you in

  395. those ways and not to be quick to forget how

  396. you've worked and what you've done. And God,

  397. help us to be patient and to wait on your counsel.

  398. And that's hard to do, dear Lord. And I pray

  399. that you'd help me to do that and help each one

  400. of us to do that. And I ask these things in Jesus'

  401. name. Amen.
