  1. When was the last time you had something unexpected

  2. happen to you? Has there been a time when the

  3. way you anticipated something going, it went

  4. very different? About the time I got here this

  5. morning, I had seen a notice that something happened

  6. this morning. Did anybody notice anything maybe

  7. about 9 .05 -ish this morning? Apparently up

  8. near Knoxville there was a little earthquake,

  9. like three and a half or four, and it could be

  10. felt down here in Georgia. Did anybody feel it?

  11. I was on the road driving here at that time.

  12. A few people are claiming that they felt it.

  13. I don't know. So that was unexpected. This is

  14. not a place where we usually have earthquakes.

  15. California? Some of you maybe have experienced

  16. earthquakes in California. Anybody? Been in California

  17. for a bigger earthquake? Many of you have. If

  18. you had been traveling about a week ago, a week

  19. and a half ago, if you had been on your vacation

  20. to Europe, maybe you were in Spain or Portugal,

  21. on a Monday afternoon, oh, about 2 o 'clock,

  22. probably right about the time siesta would be

  23. starting. I don't know. I'm making that up. But

  24. something unexpected happened. The power went

  25. out, not just in a little area, but across almost

  26. all of Spain and Portugal, and even into France,

  27. suddenly there was no power. There was a blackout.

  28. I have a really cool picture of a blackout here,

  29. but you'll just have to use your imagination.

  30. So if you were at work, well, there was no electricity.

  31. If you were at the store, again, no electricity,

  32. so you couldn't buy anything. because you couldn't

  33. use your credit card because that's connected

  34. to the power grid. You couldn't even use cash

  35. because most of the cash registers would use

  36. some sort of electricity. You couldn't, if you

  37. would use public transportation, well, the trains

  38. and stuff were not working because there was

  39. no power. You couldn't call an Uber because you

  40. had to have the internet connection to call an

  41. Uber to get home. And so everything was connected

  42. to the power grid. And so there was no internet.

  43. There was no power. There was no electricity.

  44. Everything was in the dark. You couldn't shop.

  45. You couldn't work. You couldn't travel. I have

  46. a friend who lives in Spain. And the next day

  47. or a day or so after, after all the power had

  48. mostly come back on, he posted a video on social

  49. media. And he was just commenting on, I'm safe,

  50. things are getting back to normal. But then he

  51. said, I'm really kicking myself for not being

  52. prepared. I wasn't totally prepared. And there

  53. was one thing that he said that he wished that

  54. he had through this blackout. He said, I wish

  55. that I had a radio with batteries. Because he

  56. couldn't listen to the news. He couldn't find

  57. out what was going on. He couldn't turn on the

  58. television. There's no power. He couldn't check

  59. the internet. There's no Wi -Fi. There's no internet.

  60. And so he's like, I wish that I had a radio.

  61. with batteries so that I could listen to the

  62. news and find out updates and find out what's

  63. going on. How many of you have a battery -powered

  64. radio somewhere in your house? I went and checked

  65. just to make sure. We do have one. And I turned

  66. it on and it worked. So I did notice that it's

  67. rechargeable. You know, you plug it in. So whether

  68. that would continue for a long time. That's the

  69. question that I'm not sure about. Oh, there's

  70. the blackout there. You can see Spain and Portugal

  71. without any lights on. Sometimes unexpected things

  72. happen. Are we prepared for it? Are we prepared

  73. with something as simple as a radio with batteries?

  74. Are we aware of what might be coming ahead? Here

  75. we sit today in a Seventh -day Adventist church.

  76. We are here on the seventh day of the week. because

  77. we believe the seventh day is the Sabbath. So

  78. we're here on the day that we believe we're called

  79. to worship God, our creator. We're here on this

  80. day. But there's a second part of that name,

  81. seventh day Adventist. That's a word we don't

  82. use quite as often. Maybe at Christmas time,

  83. we talk about being in the Advent season because

  84. we're remembering the first coming. of our Lord

  85. and Savior Jesus Christ. And so as Adventists,

  86. that means we are looking forward to the second

  87. coming, the return of Jesus. And so we are anticipating

  88. that something is going to happen, that there's

  89. going to be events that happen, and Jesus will

  90. return. And sometimes we study different prophecies

  91. like Matthew 24, for instance, and we talk about

  92. wars and rumors of wars and famines and pestilences

  93. and all these things, and we can recognize that

  94. it sure seems like we are getting closer and

  95. closer to Jesus coming again. We expect Jesus

  96. to return and to return fairly soon. But the

  97. question I want to consider today is do we allow

  98. that expectation to impact the way that we live

  99. our life? Does that expectation of Jesus returning,

  100. does it change the way that we go about our daily

  101. living? In other words, are we ready? Are we

  102. prepared? Are we thinking about Jesus coming

  103. again? Here we are in May. And I see several

  104. students out here. How many students do we have

  105. in the room today? Okay, we don't have any students.

  106. They're so tired of school that they don't want

  107. to even... How many students do we have? Young

  108. people, at least. Raise your hands. Are you guys

  109. ready for summer vacation? I would imagine. They're

  110. very quiet. That's good. They're not going to

  111. admit. But students at this time of year are

  112. typically ready. to get to a little bit of a

  113. break at least. And teachers and those that work

  114. at schools, I know from experience that you too,

  115. at this time of the school year, you are ready

  116. for some sort of break, some sort of change because

  117. you just get in your tests and classes and homework

  118. and you're just ready for something new. But

  119. I also know that young people, by the time the

  120. end of July or August rolls around, you're probably

  121. ready to get back to school, to get back to the

  122. routine, to see some of those friends that maybe

  123. you've missed a little bit. And for those of

  124. us that are out of that stage of life where we

  125. have summer vacation and graduations and different

  126. things like that, Maybe we would like some sort

  127. of break. We would like something to break up

  128. the ongoing, you could even call it the monotony

  129. of life, because sometimes it seems like, well,

  130. you wake up, you go to work, you wake up the

  131. next day, you go to work, you go to sleep, and

  132. there's nothing like a summer vacation that we

  133. get to look forward to. And sometimes we can

  134. seem like life gets in our way. And sometimes

  135. we can almost be drowsy or be bored. Now we're

  136. going to turn to Matthew 25. And I know if you

  137. were here last week that Pastor Derek explored

  138. Matthew 25. And we're going to look at the similar

  139. parable, but I think we're going to look at it

  140. from a different aspect. So I was hesitant a

  141. little bit to... You probably don't usually have

  142. two sermons in a row over the same passage, but

  143. we're going to explore this first parable of

  144. Matthew 25. Now, Matthew 24 explores the signs

  145. of the times and the conditions in the world

  146. before Jesus comes, those wars and rumors of

  147. wars. Matthew 25, as was mentioned last week,

  148. has three parables. One is about being... awake,

  149. being prepared, being ready. That's what we're

  150. going to look at today. And then there's one

  151. that talks about using your talents, your gifts

  152. and skills for God. And then there's a third

  153. one that talks about how do we treat other people?

  154. And it even challenges us to think about who

  155. do we like the least? Don't think about that

  156. too hard. Don't name any names. But the way you

  157. treat the person that you like the least, Jesus

  158. says, whatever you've done to the least of these,

  159. you've done to me. So we need to remember that

  160. as we treat others, that's how we treat Jesus.

  161. So Matthew 24 looks at the conditions of the

  162. world, but Matthew 25 looks at the conditions

  163. of the church, the conditions of God's people.

  164. So let's turn to Matthew. 25 and verse 1. And

  165. we're going to spend a little bit of time in

  166. this parable before we go to Romans. And it says,

  167. Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to

  168. ten virgins who took their lamps and went out

  169. to meet the bridegroom. So there's a wedding

  170. taking place. And without taking the time to

  171. explore all of the symbolism, what this picture

  172. is, it's looking forward to this advent, this

  173. return of Jesus. When Jesus comes again. It's

  174. called the wedding of the bridegroom, Jesus.

  175. And there's people that are expecting that. And

  176. it says in verse 2, now five of them were wise

  177. and five were foolish. So there's a difference.

  178. There's people expecting and anticipating and

  179. waiting to meet God. But it says five of them

  180. were wise and five of them were foolish. Now

  181. we have to make it clear here that this is...

  182. talking about God's people. This isn't God's

  183. people versus those who don't follow God. This

  184. isn't Christians versus pagans. These are all

  185. those who are anticipating, expecting something

  186. to come. And it says five were wise and five

  187. were foolish. And it goes on in verse three.

  188. And it says those who were foolish took their

  189. lamps and took no oil with them. but the wise

  190. took oil in their vessels with their lamps. And

  191. so that's what set them apart, whether or not

  192. they had oil in their lamps. Now I have here

  193. a little clay oil lamp. Jolie and I were able

  194. to go over to Israel several years ago, and we

  195. got this little souvenir. This is not a historical

  196. artifact, let me assure you. This is a tourist

  197. artifact. But you would put oil in it, and you

  198. would have a little wick, and you could light

  199. that little wick, and depending on how much oil

  200. you had would determine how long your lamp could

  201. burn. And people didn't typically go out at night

  202. in those days because there weren't street lamps,

  203. there weren't headlights, and so at nighttime

  204. it would be very dark. And it could be very scary

  205. because there could be criminals or potholes

  206. or whatever, and so people didn't go out very

  207. much at night. But if they had a little lamp

  208. with a little bit of oil, it could light their

  209. way. Now, most of us don't carry a little oil

  210. lamp to light our way. What would we do if we

  211. found ourselves in the dark? Maybe a flashlight.

  212. Maybe a flashlight like this. Does anybody carry

  213. a little flashlight with them? Why don't you

  214. pull out your little flashlight? Let's, you know,

  215. this little light of mine, I'm going to let it

  216. shine. Let's see the lights that we have. Sometimes

  217. you'll use this light. Sometimes I'll even just

  218. turn on the screen, you know, and use the light

  219. from there if I don't want to wake up Jolie if

  220. I'm coming to bed or if you're looking for the

  221. plug to plug in your phone, you know, to charge

  222. it at night. Because we don't... worry about

  223. how much oil we have in our lamp, but we do have

  224. to worry about how much battery, how much charge

  225. we have on our phone. And if you don't plug it

  226. in, you know, at least once a day, that little

  227. battery up in the corner, it's going to get less

  228. and less and less, and it's going to say 20 %

  229. battery. And then if it says 10 % battery, maybe

  230. you're starting to panic just a little bit because

  231. I've got an important phone call to make. I've

  232. got to use the GPS, and I forgot the charger.

  233. So we don't need oil, but we do need a certain

  234. kind of cord to plug it in. And it used to be

  235. that my wife and I had the same phone, and so

  236. it used the same cord, but then she got a new

  237. phone, and it uses a totally different cord,

  238. even though it's the same company, and that can

  239. be frustrating if you have one cord but not the

  240. other. And so, in just a small way, this is a

  241. reminder. These guys needed oil for their lamp,

  242. and we have something that we need power for,

  243. that we need to make sure that we charge that.

  244. Now, that oil, of course, as was mentioned last

  245. week, talks about the Holy Spirit. And how we

  246. get that. And if you missed that, you can go

  247. back to last week's sermon and look that. But

  248. I want to go ahead in the story to verse 5. It

  249. says, while the bridegroom was delayed, they,

  250. what's that next word? They all slumbered and

  251. slept. It wasn't just the foolish ones who fell

  252. asleep. All of them. They were all waiting for

  253. the bridegroom to come. But they all, every one

  254. of them, the wise and the foolish, fell asleep.

  255. So could it be that as we're anticipating, as

  256. we're expecting the return of Jesus, the problem

  257. isn't the fact that sometimes we have different

  258. levels of our spiritual excitement, our spiritual

  259. engagement. The challenge would be how we respond

  260. to that when maybe we're in a spiritual rut or

  261. how we prepare for that ahead of time. We're

  262. going to have some natural ebbs and flows in

  263. our spiritual life, but how do we respond or

  264. how do we prepare for that when maybe we're falling

  265. asleep spiritually? Not physically falling asleep

  266. right now. Maybe some are. If that's the case,

  267. I'll take the blame for that. That would be my

  268. fault. But spiritually, falling asleep. Sometimes

  269. maybe we use a word, and there's many words that

  270. could be talked about, but we use a word that

  271. sometimes we are apathetic, or we have spiritual

  272. apathy. Have you heard that word before? Well,

  273. the word apathetic comes from the word pathos.

  274. Pathos. Anybody know what that means? Well, that

  275. comes from that, but pathos really has to do

  276. with showing a feeling, enthusiasm, being excited

  277. about something. You have deep pathos as you

  278. are really engaged in whatever is going on. Now,

  279. in the English language, if you add an A in front

  280. of a word, what does that do? What? It changes

  281. it. It makes it the opposite. So instead of with

  282. feeling, if you say apathetic, that means a definition

  283. of showing or feeling no interest, no enthusiasm,

  284. no concern. And sometimes as we're going through

  285. our life as Christians, as we get in a spiritual

  286. rut, sometimes we can find ourselves apathetic,

  287. not enthusiastic. expecting someone else to fill

  288. our spiritual need and not even having the engagement

  289. to want to go to Jesus. We're just going through

  290. the motions. Now, what are some things that can

  291. cause our spiritual apathy or cause us to fall

  292. asleep spiritually? And there's many, but I just

  293. want to look at a couple this morning. One is

  294. busyness. Not business. Business is something

  295. that... You know, you've got to take care of

  296. your business. A business is your employment,

  297. your livelihood, whatever that is. But busyness,

  298. you ever seem like you're never done with anything?

  299. You're never caught up with anything? Before

  300. you finish the one assignment, the one project,

  301. there's already something else that you're supposed

  302. to be working on, whether it's at home or at

  303. the job, and you're just on this hamster wheel.

  304. You're just going. And you never seem to have

  305. any time to consider who you are, to consider

  306. what place God has in your life, to consider

  307. your place in your family or your church, and

  308. you're just so busy that that church stuff doesn't

  309. have any preference. It doesn't have any place

  310. in your life. We just are going, going, going.

  311. It reminds me of an old scene from a classic.

  312. television show, I Love Lucy. Lucy and her friend

  313. Ethel decide that they want to get a job. They

  314. want to get some extra spending money. So they

  315. go down to the candy factory and they get a job

  316. and they bumble around and they get moved around

  317. and before long the two of them find themselves

  318. on the assembly line. Some of you maybe have

  319. seen this scene before. The stern boss comes

  320. in and says, when this assembly line turns on,

  321. you will get the chocolate and you will wrap

  322. it in paper and you will put it back on the assembly

  323. line. And if one chocolate gets through, you

  324. will be fired. Roll the assembly line! And here

  325. come the chocolate. And Ethel's taking the chocolate

  326. very daintily and wrapping it in the paper and

  327. putting it back on. Lucy's doing it a little

  328. faster. And then before you know it, here comes

  329. a few more chocolates. And they're having a hard

  330. time keeping up. And they start putting them

  331. in their mouth. And they move them off the assembly

  332. line. And they're putting them in their hats

  333. and in their shirts. And before long, the picture

  334. looks something like this. Because the chocolates

  335. just keep coming through. And they can't keep

  336. up. They're too busy. And then they hear the

  337. boss coming and the assembly line stops. They

  338. scrape them all off and they put them in their

  339. hat and in their mouth and in their shirt. And

  340. so there's no chocolates on the table, on the

  341. line. And the boss comes in and says, well done,

  342. ladies. Very good. Nothing got through. Speed

  343. it up. And now here come they come even faster.

  344. And sometimes in life, we are so busy, busy,

  345. busy that we don't have time for God. We don't

  346. have time. for what is most important, and we

  347. fall asleep. Another thing that can cause this

  348. spiritual drowsiness is sometimes perhaps we

  349. are unnourished spiritually. We're not taking

  350. the time during the day to feed ourselves, to

  351. spend time in God's Word. to spend time in prayer.

  352. And this can have to do with the busyness because

  353. we just don't have time to it. And maybe our

  354. spiritual life has been relegated to a verse

  355. of the day or a little half -page devotional

  356. that we read. And those are good things. Don't

  357. get me wrong. Those are good things. But we need

  358. more than just one verse a day. It's like trying

  359. to survive on a goldfish. Now, I love goldfish

  360. crackers. I could eat the whole package of goldfish

  361. crackers. But if I was trying to survive on just

  362. one solitary goldfish for each meal, I wouldn't

  363. last very long. And neither would you. And if

  364. we're trying to survive on one solitary little

  365. morsel from the Word of God, what does it say?

  366. Jesus says, man shall not live by bread alone,

  367. by goldfish alone, but by every word that comes.

  368. from the mouth of God. If you just read one verse,

  369. okay, read it, but don't just read it. Write

  370. it down. Memorize it. Think about it as you go

  371. through the day. Put it on your mirror. Put it

  372. on your desk at work and contemplate, how does

  373. this one verse make a difference in my life today?

  374. Because we can't just survive on a tiny little

  375. morsel. We are unnourished. And another thing

  376. that can sometimes put us to sleep is that we

  377. can be spiritually malnourished. Now, what's

  378. the difference? Unnourished means we're not getting

  379. enough. Malnourished would mean, well, we're

  380. getting enough content, we're putting enough

  381. stuff in, but it's not the good stuff. It's not

  382. the healthy stuff. It's not the things that are

  383. going to... draw us to God and the things that

  384. are consuming our time and filling our heads

  385. and our imaginations. It's not just unnourishing,

  386. but it's pushing us away from God. It's malnourishing.

  387. It's causing us to forget about God, to be distracted,

  388. and to not even really care about God. Let's

  389. look at another passage here. Let's go to Romans

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  390. chapter 13, our scripture for the day. Riley

  391. did such a great job in reading for us. Romans

  392. 13, starting in verse 11. It says, There's a

  393. lot of little statements in there. I want to

  394. examine them kind of one by one. The first one

  395. is, Knowing the time. Do we know what time it

  396. is in our world? We can look at headlines. We

  397. can look at prophecies and different things like

  398. that. Do we pay attention? It's important to

  399. pay attention, but not to get so consumed on

  400. a headline that we're forgetting what is most

  401. important. It's okay to recognize, okay, well,

  402. there's a conflict between... India and Pakistan,

  403. two nuclear powers. It's okay. Let me pay attention

  404. to that. It's okay to realize, okay, there's

  405. a new pope, the first American pope. That's intriguing.

  406. Could that lead to something prophetically? It

  407. might. Could it not lead to something prophetically?

  408. Maybe not. We don't know at this point, but it's

  409. okay to know the time. It's okay to pay attention.

  410. If you were to go back to the 1960s, I see a

  411. few people who might have been alive here. Kennedy

  412. became the very first Catholic president in the

  413. United States. And people were like, well, this

  414. is it. And here we are a long time later. And

  415. so it's okay to know the time. It's okay to pay

  416. attention. We need to pay attention. But we also

  417. have to make sure that we're focusing. on the

  418. things that are most important. Because notice

  419. the next phrase. It says, knowing the time, now

  420. it is high time to wake up out of our sleep.

  421. Wake up. It's time to wake up. Paul wrote this

  422. a long time ago. It was time to wake up for the

  423. people in Rome, and it's time to wake up for

  424. the people in Ringgold. It's time to wake up

  425. now. What do you use to wake up? How many of

  426. you use the alarm on your phone? Anybody set

  427. your alarm on your phone? How many of you have

  428. another kind of alarm, maybe a clock that sits

  429. next to your bed? Anybody have a clock next to

  430. your bed? Okay. Anybody have a, maybe the kids,

  431. your mom come and wake you up because it's time

  432. to go to school. How many of your mom comes in?

  433. That's good. I don't see any hands up. A couple

  434. people there. That's good to be able to be there.

  435. How many? You just wake up on your own naturally.

  436. You just wake up and it's always the right time.

  437. Very good. Biological clock. How many of you,

  438. maybe your pet, your dog or your cat, jump on

  439. your head and say, okay, it's time to get up.

  440. You've got to take me out. A few people there.

  441. So there's different things that we have to wake

  442. us up. When I was a student at Georgia Cumberland

  443. Academy back in the 80s, believe it or not, They

  444. had lights out, and you didn't just have to turn

  445. off the light, but they would actually flip the

  446. breaker so there was no power in your room. So

  447. you couldn't listen to that secret radio that

  448. you weren't supposed to have. So you couldn't

  449. have a clock that plugged in. You had to have

  450. either a battery -powered clock or a clock that

  451. wound up. We use different things to wake us

  452. up, but it says now is the time. to wake up out

  453. of sleep. And then it says, for now our salvation

  454. is nearer than when we first believed. We don't

  455. know when Jesus is going to come. The Bible says

  456. no one knows the day or the hour. We can look

  457. at headlines, we can look at prophecies, but

  458. we don't know when Jesus is going to come. But

  459. we can know for a fact that it is nearer than

  460. it used to be. Believe it or not, I've been a

  461. pastor of this church now for about a year and

  462. a half. And guess what? We are a year and a half

  463. closer to when Jesus is coming than when I started.

  464. We've got some students here. If you're, say,

  465. 18 years old, well, guess what? We're 18 years

  466. closer than when you were born. We've got some

  467. retirees here. You're at least 65. We won't go

  468. into any more numbers than that. But guess what?

  469. we're 65 years closer than when you were born.

  470. Whatever starting date you want to put on it,

  471. we are that much closer. If you want to say yesterday,

  472. well, guess what? We are one day closer to when

  473. Jesus comes. So it is high time to wake up for

  474. our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.

  475. So I can guarantee that we are closer than we

  476. used to be. And a second thing I can guarantee

  477. is that we are no longer than one lifetime away.

  478. Whatever lifespan that may be, when someone passes

  479. away, their next thing they're going to know

  480. is Jesus coming again. And we don't know when

  481. our life is going to end. So we need to know

  482. the time. We need to wake up out of our sleep

  483. because we are nearer than when we first begun.

  484. And notice verse 12. It says, the night is far

  485. spent. The day is at hand. Therefore, let us

  486. cast off the works of darkness and let us put

  487. on the armor of light. We've got to take away

  488. those things which are causing us to be too busy,

  489. which are causing us to be unnourished or malnourished.

  490. And it says we've got to cast off those works

  491. of darkness. And then in verse 14, it says, put

  492. on the Lord Jesus Christ. and make no provision

  493. for the flesh to fulfill its lust. So we've got

  494. to set aside those things that cause our spiritual

  495. apathy, and we've got to put on Jesus. We've

  496. got to focus on his total, inconceivable love,

  497. and the hope, and the guidance, and the forgiveness

  498. that he has. That's what we have to put on as

  499. we're waking up. We have to keep our attention

  500. not on who the Pope is, but on who Jesus is.

  501. Not on what conflict is happening in the world,

  502. but on what the Prince of Peace is doing in our

  503. life. I saw a statement just yesterday that said

  504. if we're more concerned about Popes than about

  505. saving other people, then probably we don't need

  506. to look any further than our own reflection to

  507. see the spirit of Antichrist. Have mercy. We

  508. need to care about the people that we know, the

  509. people that are in our sphere of influence. And

  510. we can know the time and we can pay attention

  511. to things, but let us put on Jesus Christ. Now

  512. we've got to go back because we left 10 people

  513. sleeping on the side of the road. We don't want

  514. to leave them there. Matthew 25, let's go back

  515. there briefly. It says, and at midnight, A cry

  516. was heard. Behold, the bridegroom is coming.

  517. Go out to meet him. And then all the virgins

  518. arose and trimmed their lamps. And it goes on

  519. and says, they trimmed their lamps and the foolish

  520. said to the wise, give us some of your oil for

  521. our lamps are going out. But the wise answered

  522. saying, no, lest there should not be enough for

  523. us and you, but you go and gather from those

  524. who sell and buy for yourself. said, wait, we

  525. have this. We prepared. We had woken up. We had

  526. expected something. But sometimes even the expected

  527. thing happens at an unexpected time. And these

  528. foolish young ladies, they were anticipating,

  529. expecting Jesus to come, but they still missed

  530. out. Notice this next verse, verse 10. While

  531. they went to buy, The bridegroom came and those

  532. who were ready went in with him to the wedding,

  533. but the door was shut. They were expecting the

  534. bridegroom to come, but they missed it. They

  535. were anticipating it, but they weren't ready.

  536. They hadn't prepared. They hadn't been filled

  537. with that oil of the Holy Spirit. They hadn't

  538. spent that time focusing on what God is, but

  539. they had been tied down and they had gone to

  540. sleep. spiritually, and they hadn't prepared

  541. for how they were going to interact with that.

  542. And so just a few verses later, verse 13, notice

  543. what it says, Watch therefore, for you know neither

  544. the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man

  545. is coming. We've got to keep watch. We've got

  546. to wake up, because we don't know exactly when

  547. Jesus is coming, but we know he's coming soon,

  548. and each day we go by, He's coming that much

  549. sooner. There's a story from a few years ago

  550. about a gentleman, James Shaw. He was hungry,

  551. and he wanted to go eat somewhere, and it was

  552. the middle of the night, like 2 o 'clock in the

  553. morning. Now, there's not a lot of places you

  554. can go find some food at 2 o 'clock in the morning,

  555. but in Nashville and many other places, there's

  556. at least one, and that's Waffle House. Open 24

  557. hours. So James Shaw was at the Waffle House.

  558. probably eating a waffle, maybe some hash browns,

  559. covered, smothered, I don't know how he liked

  560. them, when suddenly there was an unexpected noise

  561. of gunfire and windows shattering, and someone

  562. begun shooting into the Waffle House and came

  563. into the door. And as you might imagine, everyone

  564. in that facility scattered and tried to find

  565. a place to hide, and James found himself with

  566. others. down the little hallway that goes back

  567. towards the restrooms. But that door doesn't

  568. lock. And so they could hear and sense that that

  569. person was coming closer. And James already had

  570. a graze of a bullet on his arm. And as that gunman

  571. was getting closer, they could tell he was reloading.

  572. fixing a jam or something. And James jumped out

  573. and he grabbed the barrel of the gun and it burned

  574. his hand, the hot barrel. He wrenched the gun

  575. away from the gunman. He threw it over the counter

  576. back to where the cooks are. And that gunman,

  577. without his weapon, he ran away and later was

  578. arrested. Now, four people died in that shooting.

  579. Tragically, four people died. But how many more

  580. might have died? This is what James said when

  581. they interviewed him later. He said, I was completely

  582. doing it just to save myself. Now, me doing that,

  583. I did save other people. But I don't want people

  584. to think that I was the Terminator or Superman

  585. or anybody like that. It was just, I figured

  586. if I was going to die, he was going to have to

  587. work for it. And so he did that to save himself.

  588. But in the process of saving himself, he saved

  589. the lives of many other people. It was an unexpected

  590. situation, but he responded in a positive way

  591. and made a difference. And as we find ourselves

  592. in unexpected situations, as we are waiting for

  593. Jesus to come, how will we respond? If we respond

  594. in a way to save ourselves, to wake ourselves

  595. up, to make sure that we are focusing on Jesus,

  596. that we're putting on the Lord Jesus, well, guess

  597. what? There's a good chance that by saving yourself,

  598. you're going to save somebody else. You're going

  599. to influence somebody else. You're going to bring

  600. somebody else along with you. So let's make sure

  601. that as we expect Jesus to come soon, that no

  602. matter what comes along that is unexpected, that

  603. we will keep our attention and we will keep our

  604. focus upon Jesus. And in all that we do, we will

  605. let our light shine for him. Let's bow our heads

  606. for prayer. Dear God, we thank you so much that

  607. you love us enough to care about us. You love

  608. us enough to give us clues and hints and a promise

  609. that you are coming again. And Lord, forgive

  610. us for times that we have gotten spiritually

  611. drowsy when we have fallen asleep. But Lord,

  612. help us in all that we do to focus on you, to

  613. put on the Lord Jesus Christ, to know the time

  614. that we live in, to awake out of our sleep, and

  615. to keep our eyes on you. In your name we pray.

  616. Amen.
