  1. Psalm 106. We've gone through it a couple of

  2. weeks. We took a week off from it last week,

  3. but this week we're continuing on right where

  4. we left off. Psalm 106, verse 16. I told y 'all

    Psalms 106:16

  5. when we started Psalm 106, we were probably going

  6. to be in it for a while because we're going to

  7. look at some of these stories that are referenced

  8. in detail. So we're going to go back and find

  9. them in the Old Testament. and dig into them

  10. in a little more depth. And we did that last

  11. week, and we're going to do that again this week.

  12. So we'll be in Psalm 106. We'll start in verse

  13. 16. We'll read verses 16, 17, and 18. This chapter

  14. has to do with Israel's disobedience. The chapter

  15. before talked about God's obedience or faithfulness

  16. to his people. Psalm 106 talks about the unfaithfulness

  17. of God's people toward God. And so we see some

  18. examples of that in this psalm, and we're going

  19. to look at another one tonight. Let's pray, and

  20. then we'll get started. God, we come to you.

  21. We thank you for your good word. I pray that

  22. you would help us to understand these stories

  23. and this passage that we're going to look at

  24. and help us to look at our own life, dear Lord,

  25. that maybe we can learn through what we read

  26. tonight, God, that we don't... Look at others

  27. and think how bad they are, but dear Lord, that

  28. we let your word talk to us, that we can see

  29. if there's something in here that we need to

  30. hear. And there certainly always is in your word

  31. if we'd listen. So let your Holy Spirit be with

  32. us and free us from worries and distractions.

  33. Take away any pride or fear that's within me

  34. and help me to be able to focus and preach and

  35. teach your word in a way that brings glory and

  36. honor to you tonight. In Jesus' name I pray it.

  37. Amen. All right, Psalm 106, verse 16. In the

    Psalms 106:16

  38. camp, they were envious of Moses and of Aaron,

  39. the Lord's holy one. The earth opened up and

  40. swallowed Dathan. It covered the assembly of

  41. Abraham. Fire blazed throughout their assembly.

  42. Flames consumed the wicked. Now, this is just

  43. three little verses that talks about a pretty

  44. interesting story. that you will find in Numbers

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  45. chapter 16 if you want to turn there. Numbers

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  46. chapter 16. Now we won't read through all of

  47. this chapter tonight. We're probably going to

  48. break it up into a couple of weeks. But Numbers

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  49. chapter 16 tells us an interesting story about

  50. a guy by the name of Korah and some others that

  51. he gathered up to rebel against Moses. By this

  52. point, you know, God's people were on their way

  53. to the promised land, and God had told Moses

  54. to send some scouts to scout out the promised

  55. land, and they did. And the scouts that went

  56. to scout out the promised land came back, and

  57. almost all of them said, oh, yeah, it's a great

  58. land, but there's people there, and they're giants,

  59. and they're just, oh, we just can't go in and

  60. take these people. You know, it's just, it's

  61. too scary. We've come all this way, and there's

  62. no way we can go in there. Well, a couple of

  63. the folks that went in to check out the land,

  64. Joshua and Caleb, they came back and they gave

  65. a favorable report. They said, hey, look, this

  66. is a beautiful land, and we have nothing to fear.

  67. God is on our side, and so it doesn't matter

  68. who's there. We need to go in and get this land.

  69. Well, God was not happy with the people because

  70. of what they had done. He was not happy that

  71. they had... acted this way, that they had acted

  72. out of fear, that they weren't living in obedience

  73. to him. And God was just not happy with his people.

  74. And as a result of that, they were going to be

  75. forced to wander around in the wilderness for

  76. 40 years. They weren't going to be able to go

  77. into the promised land. And so that's what we

  78. see kind of leading up to this. And then right

  79. before this, we see that God It gave a few commands

  80. to Moses for the people, some things that they

  81. needed to follow and things that they needed

  82. to do. And then we get to Numbers chapter 16.

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  83. Now Moses had led the people out of Egypt. He

  84. parted the Red Sea. God had provided for them.

  85. They had been complaining the whole time. We

  86. don't have enough food to eat that we want. Oh,

  87. in Egypt we ate so good. We don't even have good

  88. water to drink. Oh, it's so horrible. Why did

  89. you bring us out here, Moses? It's the worst

  90. thing ever. And they had just been complaining

  91. and complaining and complaining the whole time.

  92. And we talked about that the last couple of weeks

  93. in Psalm 106. And here's another story of their

  94. unfaithfulness to God. They're still complaining.

  95. So by this point, the people are... tired of

  96. Moses, that he must not be doing a very good

  97. job. And why do we have to listen to Moses? Well,

  98. that's what Korah said. And he got some others

  99. along with him to start a rebellion to confront

  100. Moses. And that's what we see in Numbers chapter

    Numbers 16:1

  101. 16, verse 1. Now Korah, son of Ishar, son of

  102. Kohath, son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram,

  103. sons of Eliab, And On, son of Peleth, sons of

  104. Reuben, took 250 prominent Israelite men who

  105. were leaders of the community and representatives

  106. in the assembly, and they rebelled against Moses.

  107. They came together against Moses and Aaron and

  108. told them, You have gone too far. Everyone in

  109. the entire community is holy, and the Lord is

  110. among them. Why then do you exalt? exalt yourselves

  111. above the Lord's assembly. Okay, so the scene

  112. is set. Korah, there's a few other guys here.

  113. They gather up 250 leaders in the land, and they

  114. go and confront Moses. And they said, let me

  115. tell you, Moses, you have gone too far. The things

  116. that you're doing, the way that you're leading

  117. us, we're not pleased with this. This is not

  118. a good way to do it. We don't want to follow

  119. you anymore. And listen to what he said in the

  120. middle of that verse. He says, everyone in the

  121. entire community is holy. Well, that's a bold

  122. statement to make. These are the same people

  123. who have been complaining and been disobedient

  124. to God since they left Egypt. And they're so

  125. bold to stand before Moses and say, who are you

  126. to tell us that we're holy? Who are you to have

  127. all the power? We can have as much power as you.

  128. Why can't we be the ones that lead these people,

  129. Israel? So Korah gets this group together and

  130. they rebel against Moses and come to him and

  131. say, hey, look here, we're not going to follow

  132. you anymore. Let's see what happens in verse

  133. 4. When Moses heard this, he fell face down.

  134. Then he said to Korah and all his followers,

  135. tomorrow morning the Lord will reveal who belongs

  136. to him, who is set apart, and the one he will

  137. let come near him. He will let the one he chooses

  138. come near him. Korah, you and all your followers

  139. are to do this. Take fire pans and tomorrow place

  140. fire in them and put incense on them before the

  141. Lord. Then the man the Lord chooses will be the

  142. one who is set apart. It is you Levites who have

  143. gone too far. So Moses hears their objection

  144. and he says, we're going to let the Lord decide.

  145. We'll let the Lord decide who's in the right.

  146. We're both going to go before the Lord. We'll

  147. see who the Lord answers, who the Lord pays attention

  148. to, who the Lord is gracious to, and who the

  149. Lord brings punishment to. If I'm in the wrong,

  150. so be it. If you guys are in the right, then

  151. so be it. Moses says, we're going to let the

  152. Lord decide who's right and who's wrong. They

  153. told Moses he had gone too far. He says, no,

  154. y 'all are the ones who are in the wrong. Y 'all

  155. are the ones who have gone too far. Verse 8.

  156. Moses also told Korah, Now listen, Levites, isn't

  157. it enough for you that the God of Israel has

  158. separated you from the Israelite community to

  159. bring you near to himself, to perform the work

  160. at the Lord's tabernacle, and to stand before

  161. the community to minister to them? He has brought

  162. you near, and all your fellow Levites who are

  163. with you, but you are seeking the priesthood

  164. as well. Therefore, it is you and all your followers.

  165. who have conspired against the Lord. As for Aaron,

  166. who is he that you should complain about him?

  167. So Moses said, look, God has put me in charge.

  168. God has established me. He's called me. He's

  169. called Aaron to lead you guys, to be the priest

  170. of you guys. And you guys are not paying any

  171. attention to what the Lord has said. And why

  172. are you mad at Aaron? What did he do, he says.

  173. And so Moses is not happy about what's taking

  174. place. He's not happy about these people confronting

  175. him. But nevertheless, the Lord is going to decide

  176. and take care of the situation. Verse 12. Moses

  177. sent for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab.

  178. But they said, We will not come. Is it not enough

  179. that you brought us up from a land flowing with

  180. milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness?

  181. Do you also have to appoint yourself as ruler

  182. over us? Furthermore, you didn't bring us to

  183. a land flowing with milk and honey or give us

  184. an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will

  185. you gouge out the eyes of these men? We will

  186. not come. Now, isn't it interesting the language

  187. that they use here? They said, look, you brought

  188. us out of a land flowing with milk and honey

  189. and brought us here. Wait a minute. That's what

  190. God said about the promised land. That it was

  191. a land flowing with milk and honey. But yet,

  192. these people who are rebelling against God here,

  193. they're using that same language of Egypt. They're

  194. thinking, oh, remember back, it was so good in

  195. Egypt. They had totally forgot that they were

  196. enslaved. Now, certainly Egypt was blessed in

  197. those days. Egypt was doing well. Egypt did have

  198. a lot of resources. But the people of Israel,

  199. they were slaves there. They didn't have freedom

  200. there. They were enslaved in a foreign land.

  201. And how quickly they forgot. How quickly they

  202. forgot their situation. And now that they're

  203. in this wilderness and in these situations that

  204. they brought on themselves because they were

  205. disobedient to God, and now all of a sudden their

  206. memory of the past is a lot better than what

  207. the past actually was. Sometimes we have a way

  208. of doing that. Sometimes we have a way of...

  209. of remembering things as being a little better

  210. than they actually were when i was in in seminary

  211. i bought this little futon that folded into a

  212. bed and it was so i mean i said on that thing

  213. it was so comfortable i'd use it as a couch i'd

  214. use it as a futon and it was so comfortable and

  215. we needed a cheap couch when we got married and

  216. i was like hey i'm gonna get that same couch

  217. because i remember that thing was so comfortable

  218. and they still made it everything so i bought

  219. the same thing and guess what it wasn't it I

  220. said, man, this ain't as comfortable as I remember

  221. it being. And the Israelites, they're in the

  222. wilderness and in their mind they're thinking,

  223. man, it was really good back in Egypt when we

  224. were slaves and having to do all that manual

  225. labor. It was the land flowing with milk and

  226. honey. But it wasn't that good. It wasn't that

  227. good at all. They had just kind of been blinded

  228. for their current situation and their old situation.

  229. They thought things were better than they were.

  230. But they would be a lot better than they were

  231. if they would just listen to God. They would

  232. be in a land flowing with milk and honey. None

  233. of this would have taken place if the ones who

  234. went into the land to check it out would have

  235. come back and said, hey, this is a great land.

  236. If God says we need to take it, let's go in there

  237. and take it. If they would have done that, we

  238. would have saved a lot of ink in writing these

  239. scriptures about them wandering in the wilderness.

  240. But they didn't do that. And so now they're rebelling.

  241. They want to be in a land flowing with milk and

  242. honey, and the reason they're not is because

  243. they're not obedient to God. And so they call

  244. Moses out, and Moses doesn't want to have any

  245. of it. He says, Furthermore, you didn't bring

  246. us to a land flowing with milk and honey, or

  247. give us an inheritance or fields and vineyards.

  248. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? We

  249. will not come. Now they had a choice. They could

  250. follow the man that God sent or not. That was

  251. their choice. Okay, God has established this

  252. is the way things need to be. I have somewhere

  253. I want to send you. I want to take you to a better

  254. place. I want to provide for you. But that's

  255. going to require obedience of you to me. And

  256. sadly, they were disobedient to the Lord. But

  257. what about you and I? Maybe we look at this story

  258. and we say, man, these foolish people. But do

  259. we ever do the same thing? Are we ever guilty

  260. of complaining in the same way that these folks

  261. complain? This is their history. This is their

  262. pattern. Like no matter what God did for them,

  263. they just complained, complained, complained.

  264. And every time they complained, God would bring

  265. judgment on them. And it was pretty serious.

  266. You may recall from the story we talked about

  267. a couple of weeks ago where they wanted food.

  268. Give us food, give us food, give us food. We

  269. want food, we want meat, we want meat. Give us

  270. meat, give us meat. And God said, you want meat,

  271. you got meat. And he gave them meat and they

  272. ate so much meat that it made them sick. And

  273. they finally got what they wanted and they realized

  274. that what they wanted was not what was best for

  275. them. And then they turn around and they complain

  276. and they complain. That's just scripture after

  277. scripture. They're just complaining and rebelling

  278. against everything that God calls them to do.

  279. And they continually get in bad situations. And

  280. then they fail to see that they bear some responsibility

  281. for where they are. Do we ever do the same thing?

  282. Do we ever complain, complain, complain, complain,

  283. complain? Of all the things that God has done

  284. for us, do we ever complain? Now you may say

  285. to yourself, well yeah, but if I would have saw

  286. the Red Sea part, I wouldn't complain. Well yeah,

  287. you would have. Because there were hundreds of

  288. thousands, maybe even a couple of million of

  289. Israelites at that time that walked through a

  290. sea, parted on dry ground, and as soon as they

  291. get to the other side, the first thing they can

  292. do is start complaining. about how good they

  293. had it in Egypt and oh why did we leave Egypt

  294. that's the first thing they do and God has been

  295. good to us in a lot of ways and maybe we haven't

  296. seen a sea part but man we have a thank you everybody

  297. in here has a house they're going to go to tonight

  298. when they leave I suspect everybody is probably

  299. eating a meal. If you hadn't, let me know after

  300. church. We'll get you a meal, but I suspect we're

  301. probably all eating a meal today. We're all wearing

  302. clothes tonight. Praise the Lord for that. That

  303. would be really awkward if we weren't. A lot

  304. of you have jobs or were able to work jobs and

  305. are now retired. I mean, there's so many good

  306. things that God has been good to us with, and

  307. yet we still find so many ways to complain. about

  308. things that maybe don't matter. And maybe there

  309. are things that God wants to do in our life and

  310. ways that God wants to lead us, ways that are

  311. tough, things that are before us, just like it

  312. was going to be, in a sense, it was going to

  313. take some faith. It was going to be tough for

  314. them to go into that promised land because it

  315. was scary. Sometimes what's before us is scary.

  316. But there were a couple of them that wanted to

  317. trust in the Lord, and then there were some that

  318. didn't, and then there were these guys that said,

  319. Not only do we want to trust, we just want to

  320. do away with everything that God has established

  321. and do away with Moses and we want to do it all

  322. ourselves. And do we ever do that? Do we ever

  323. have that attitude that there's something before

  324. us that maybe is scary or maybe is tough and

  325. we're not so sure about it and we miss out on

  326. what God wants to bless us with because we're

  327. too afraid to just have faith and listen to him?

  328. How many times does God give us commands and

  329. we rebel against it? We know what the Word of

  330. God says. We feel the conviction of the Holy

  331. Spirit, and we know what we should do, and we

  332. rebel against it. These people knew what they

  333. should have done. Moses had been with them for

  334. a while. He had just, right before this, a chapter

  335. or two before, he'd been telling them these laws

  336. and these commands that God had given. They were

  337. aware of what God desired and what God required.

  338. And they weren't just rebelling against Moses.

  339. They were rebelling against God. And how many

  340. times do we do the same thing? Now Moses was

  341. the one that God had sent. He was going to be

  342. the one that was going to deliver the people

  343. out of slavery and lead them to the promised

  344. land. And they were rejecting the one that God

  345. sent. And Moses is just foreshadowing Jesus Christ.

  346. It's foreshadowing who's to come. That whole

  347. situation with the Israelites. And it really

  348. happened, but... But it's also symbolic of what

  349. was going to happen. That there was going to

  350. be a Passover. That those who were covered in

  351. the blood were going to be passed over. That

  352. there would be one who would lead the people

  353. out of slavery and into freedom. Who would lead

  354. the people into the promised land. Moses was

  355. foreshadowing what was going to come in Jesus

  356. Christ. That he was going to be the one that

  357. God was going to send. That he would be the one

  358. to lead us out of the slavery of our sin. That

  359. he'd be the one to lead us into the... and the

  360. peace of the gospel of Jesus Christ, that he

  361. would be the one to bring us into the promised

  362. land. And so God has sent his one and only son.

  363. He's the deliverer. He's the one that God has

  364. appointed. And we have a choice to make. Are

  365. we going to follow him or are we going to rebel

  366. against him? Are we going to say, no, we don't

  367. want to follow the one that God sent. We want

  368. to do it our way. Because we don't like God's

  369. way. We don't like the way God wants to send

  370. us. We don't like the things God wants us to

  371. do. We want to do it our way. And we're in a

  372. bad place when we get to that place. And there's

  373. plenty of people in this world that are there.

  374. Maybe some here tonight. Maybe some listening

  375. online. But the only way we're going to find

  376. freedom and peace and deliverance is when we

  377. trust in the one that God sent in Jesus Christ.

  378. He's the one that's going to... Lead us through

  379. whatever's before us. I don't know what's before

  380. you. It might be scary. There may be giants before

  381. you just as there were for those spies that went

  382. into the promised land. Will you be one who sees

  383. the giants and flee or will you be one that sees

  384. the giants and say, we got this? Will you be

  385. one that follows Jesus, the one that God sent,

  386. or will you be one that rebels against him and

  387. say, I don't want to live for Jesus. I want to

  388. live for myself. Well, this crew of folks here,

  389. They made the wrong choice. They rebelled against

  390. Moses, and really they rebelled against God.

  391. And we're going to see next week that they are

  392. going to pay the consequence for that. Let's

  393. pray. God, we come to you. We thank you for your

  394. good words. I pray that you help us not to be

  395. so foolish, to think back of our past, of our

  396. sinfulness, and think that it's better than it

  397. was. Sometimes, dear Lord, we forget how bad

  398. things that we've done in our past are, Let us

  399. never be drawn to our sinful desires of the past,

  400. but to keep on pushing forward, to keep on on

  401. the straight and narrow path. As tough as it

  402. may be, God, sometimes that path leads us to

  403. places that are overwhelming to us. But, dear

  404. Lord, if your people would have just listened,

  405. you would have took them there and took care

  406. of them and gave them everything that they needed.

  407. You do it to us, dear Lord, and so many times

  408. we don't have faith and we're afraid and we turn

  409. back. Maybe if we're honest, we... We rebel against

  410. you, dear Lord. We know what you call us to do,

  411. and there's something in us, God, that just we

  412. don't want to do it. And I pray that you forgive

  413. us of that, and I pray that you would help us

  414. to be a people that are obedient to you, that

  415. we would not think too highly of ourselves, dear

  416. Lord. These folks in this story we looked at

  417. tonight, boy, they call themselves holy, but,

  418. dear Lord, they were so far from it. And so,

  419. God, I pray that you help us to examine our lives.

  420. Maybe we look at ourselves and we say, Or think

  421. just how holy we are. But maybe, dear Lord, our

  422. pride has blinded us and we're not as holy as

  423. we think. So God, I pray that we would seek you

  424. and not rebel against your word and not rebel

  425. against the one that you sent. But that we would

  426. seek Jesus Christ and trust him and not seek

  427. to do it our way as these folks did, but to trust

  428. in the one that you sent to be our deliverer.

  429. And I ask these things in Jesus' name. Amen.
