  1. Father in heaven, speak to us this morning, we

  2. ask in Jesus' name. Amen. Once again, it is a

  3. privilege and an honor to be here at the Rainbow

  4. Church. This is my first time here. We have a

  5. beautiful facility. I drive by this road all

  6. the time, and I've always wondered what this

  7. church was like. As soon as I walked into Sandler

  8. School, I thought to myself, I wonder what this

  9. church is like. And the first announcement, to

  10. my dismay, I was a bit discouraged, I saw on

  11. the screen was... Potluck is next Saturday. I

  12. said to myself, man, I should have come next

  13. Saturday. Come on back. Maybe I'll come back

  14. just for Potluck. How does that sound, right?

  15. But it's good to see that there are still some

  16. churches who hold on to the tradition of Potluck.

  17. Potluck, friends, is more than the food. It's

  18. more than just eating food. You know, I passed

  19. it for a number of years, and I've said this

  20. to my elders and my leaders. You know, Potluck

  21. is not about the food. It's about connecting

  22. with people. It's about fellowshipping with people.

  23. And there may be times where the food will run

  24. out. That's okay. Because it was never about

  25. the food. And I'm so happy to see that some churches

  26. are still holding on to the tradition of potluck.

  27. It's a time to connect. It's a time to visit

  28. with each other. And as the pastor, it's a time

  29. for me to visit those that I couldn't visit during

  30. the week. And so I just want to commend you for

  31. that wonderful tradition that you're holding

  32. on to, potluck. It's one of my favorite parts

  33. of the Sabbath. Well, today I've entitled my

  34. sermon, Courage. Courage. I've thought a lot

  35. about this, and I've prayed about it. The Lord

  36. has impressed upon my heart to preach on this

  37. subject, this thing called courage. Ladies and

  38. gentlemen, if truth be told, if you're honest

  39. with yourself, and if we're honest with all of

  40. ourselves, if we're honest with ourselves, and

  41. if truth be told, we all admire courage. When

  42. we see it, we have this great respect. When we

  43. see courage being exemplified, it's an admiration.

  44. And I believe that the reason why courage is

  45. often admired is because it's a rarity. We hardly

  46. see it. It's a virtue that's lacking not only

  47. in our churches, not only in our families, but

  48. also in society today. When I think of courage,

  49. the metaphor that comes to mind, is a diamond

  50. or diamonds. You see, when we see a diamond,

  51. we're in awe. You know, we're amazed. We're excited.

  52. Why? Because diamonds are a rarity. And the same

  53. is often true when it comes to this virtue called

  54. courage. It is a virtue that is lacking today.

  55. It's a rarity. It's an anomaly. And I'm not just

  56. making that based on pure observation. As a matter

  57. of fact, research confirms it. There's a company,

  58. a survey was done and conducted by HisCos in

  59. partnership with Forbes Insiders insurance companies.

  60. And what they did was they came together and

  61. they wanted to measure the level of courage across

  62. aspects of American life today. And this survey

  63. was done over a span of 10 years. And they came

  64. up with a metric system called ACI, American

  65. Courage Index. And so they wanted to quantify,

  66. they wanted to measure this thing called courage

  67. in everyday American life. And over a span of

  68. a decade, the final conclusion was, according

  69. to the survey, is that in America, courage is

  70. on the decline. Research confirms it. Courage

  71. is on the decline. It's a rarity. It's a virtue

  72. that's lacking today. As a matter of fact, another

  73. independent research states that as courage is

  74. declining, fear is increasing. What's very interesting,

  75. according to this research, is that we are living

  76. in the most safest era in Earth's history. And

  77. what doesn't make sense according to these researchers

  78. are why is it that we are living in the most

  79. safest era when we talk about safety. Never before

  80. have we had so many locks on our doors. Never

  81. before have we had so many surveillance cameras.

  82. We are living in the most safest era in earth's

  83. history and yet fear is still increasing. That's

  84. what boggles the mind of these researchers. But

  85. here's the conundrum that I want to submit to

  86. your attention. Courage is on the decline. Courage.

  87. in the land of the free, in the home of the brave,

  88. is declining. If there's ever a virtue that we

  89. need in the Christian experience today, it is

  90. courage. Without courage, victory is impossible.

  91. Without courage, you cannot do the impossible.

  92. Without courage... You cannot share your faith

  93. without courage. You cannot tell others about

  94. Jesus. If there's ever a time, Ringgold Church,

  95. we need courage, it is now. Why? Well, first

  96. and foremost, this is the reason why we need

  97. courage. Because God commands it. God doesn't

  98. suggest it. God doesn't make it an option. You

  99. heard the scripture reading this morning in Joshua

    Joshua 1:9

  100. chapter 1 verse 9. Jesus said, God says, have

  101. not I commanded you? Courage is a command. God

  102. commands it of us. Be of good courage. He doesn't

  103. suggest it. He doesn't request it. He says, have

  104. not I commanded you? It's a command of God. It's

  105. a virtue in the Bible that we often overlook,

  106. but it has serious implications. It's crucial

  107. and imperative to the well -being and the success

  108. of the children of Israel in the Old Testament

  109. and also to the spiritual children of the New

  110. Testament. As a matter of fact, whenever you

  111. often see the word courage, Be of good courage.

  112. This is why God commanded courage. Please listen

  113. to what I'm about to say next. This is why God

  114. commanded courage in the Old Testament. Because

  115. it is a life or death issue. We often just read

  116. courage and we think, well, that's okay. But

  117. if you read it in its context, when the 12 tribes

  118. scattered the promised land, God commanded them

  119. to be of good courage because it was a life or

  120. death issue. Be of good courage. When the children

  121. of Israel were to cross over to Canaan land,

  122. God commanded them, be of good courage. Why?

  123. Because it was a life or death issue. If we are

  124. to prosper, if we are to triumph, if we are to

  125. be successful in reaching out our community,

  126. we must be of good courage. It's a life or death

  127. issue. There are so many verses in scripture.

  128. That we can read and we can see. But let me just

  129. share with you a few of them here this morning.

  130. Numbers. There's a plethora of promises, of commands

  131. where God commands his people. Be of good courage.

  132. Be of good courage. He doesn't request it. He

  133. doesn't make it optional. He says be of good

  134. courage. It's a life and death issue. And it's

  135. a rarity these days. It's lacking. Numbers chapter

    Numbers 13:20

  136. 13 verse 20. Let me read it to you. And be ye

  137. of good courage and bring of the fruit of the

  138. land. Deuteronomy 31 verse 6. Be strong and of

    Deuteronomy 31:6

  139. a good courage. Fear not nor be afraid of them.

  140. Deuteronomy 31 verse 7. The Bible says, And Moses

    Deuteronomy 31:7

  141. called unto Joshua and said unto him in the sight

  142. of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage.

  143. For thou must go with this people unto the land

  144. which the Lord hath sworn unto their fathers

  145. to give them. Deuteronomy 31 verse 23, And he

    Deuteronomy 31:23

  146. gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said,

  147. Be strong and of a good courage, for thou shalt

  148. bring the children of Israel into the land which

  149. I promised you. Ezra chapter 10 verse 4, Arise,

    Ezra 10:4

  150. for this matter belongeth unto thee. We also

  151. will be with thee. Be of good courage and do

  152. it. You see, Satan knows that when we have courage,

  153. he will be defeated. Be of good courage. Psalm

  154. 27 and verse 4. Wait on the Lord. Be of good

  155. courage and he shall strengthen your heart. Wait,

  156. I say, on the Lord. Psalm 31, 24. Be of good

  157. courage, and he shall strengthen your heart,

  158. all ye that hope in the Lord. Isaiah 41 verse

    Isaiah 41:6

  159. 6, they helped everyone his neighbor. Everyone

  160. said unto his brother, be of good courage. You

  161. see, this phrase, be of good courage, is written

  162. in a way that we're not supposed to just say

  163. it to ourselves. We're supposed to encourage

  164. each other with it. We turn to our brother, turn

  165. to our sister and say, brother, be of good courage.

  166. Be of good courage. That should be a habitual

  167. thing. Be of good courage. First thing you wake

  168. up in the morning, tell yourself, be of good

  169. courage in the Lord. First person you see at

  170. church, brother, happy Sabbath, be of good courage.

  171. Would you say amen to that? This statement, this

  172. promise is not confined, nor was it designed

  173. to be kept to yourself. It was meant to be shared.

  174. You imagine being on the receiving end and someone

  175. comes up to you and says, brother, be of good

  176. courage. Right? Turn to your brother. Be of good

  177. courage. You see, Satan wants your mind. I was

  178. reading a psychology paper and I came across

  179. this very interesting statement that I want to

  180. excerpt from it. It had this one -liner and it

  181. said in this psychology paper, it said, Courage

  182. is a buffer to mental illness. Courage is a buffer.

  183. To mental illness. According to a survey of 1

  184. ,000 soldiers in a brigade unit in the Iraq war,

  185. the results show that in this survey that brave,

  186. courageous soldiers who were, the results show

  187. that courageous soldiers who were able to effectively

  188. handle or regulate fear and show courage showed

  189. less. Combat fatigue showed less anger and showed

  190. less post -traumatic stress. Courage. Courage

  191. is a buffer to mental illness. You see, if there's

  192. anything that Satan wants, Satan wants control

  193. of your mind. The battle of the great controversy

  194. we all know, yes, it's the battle between truth

  195. and error. But the battle of the great controversy

  196. is the battle over our mind. Who has our mind?

  197. Who has your mind? For the servant of the Lord

  198. tells us that out of our mind come our actions.

  199. Out of our thoughts come our words and our actions.

  200. And the more we repeat our actions, those actions...

  201. become our habits. And the servant of the Lord

  202. tells us that our habits lay the foundation of

  203. our character and our character determines our

  204. destiny. And Satan will do anything that he can

  205. to control your mind. And if it means destroying

  206. courage, he will do that. If it means crushing

  207. your courage, He will do that. That's the reason

  208. why, friends, Satan is not concerned about your

  209. destiny. Satan is not concerned about your character.

  210. Satan is not concerned about what you do. Satan

  211. wants your mind. Because once he has your mind,

  212. he has your actions. He has your character. Once

  213. he has your mind, he has your destiny. That's

  214. the reason why the Bible says, let this mind

  215. be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. Courage.

  216. Satan wants control of your mind and he will

  217. do anything that he can to crush your courage.

  218. It has an effect on your mind. Now I want to

  219. make it very clear. I want to be very specific

  220. and precise when I use the word courage. Because

  221. courage is often used very openly. So let me

  222. just kind of define what I mean by courage. And

  223. let me define courage by telling you what courage

  224. is not. I don't know if you think like me sometimes.

  225. Sometimes in order for you to know something,

  226. I've got to know what it's not. Do you guys think

  227. like me? I've got to find out what this is what

  228. it's not. By process of elimination, if this

  229. is what it's not, then this is what it must be.

  230. So let me define courage from that perspective.

  231. This is what courage is not. Courage is not confidence.

  232. There's a difference between courage and confidence.

  233. You see, when someone is confident, confidence...

  234. means that you have no fear. You're confident.

  235. If someone were to stand up here and sing or

  236. preach, and they were to sing and preach confidently,

  237. they have no fear. They preach confidently. Right?

  238. Confidence is the absence of fear. They're so

  239. confident in what they do. That's not courage.

  240. So let's not mix up the difference between courage

  241. and confidence. Courage, on the other hand, listen,

  242. courage... is mindful of that fear, and yet you

  243. proceed to do it. That's what courage is. Courage

  244. is acknowledging the fact that you're fearful

  245. to do something, but you go ahead and do it anyhow.

  246. Can anybody resonate with that? Right? Let's

  247. take, for example, singing. Someone can stand

  248. here and sing with confidence, and at the same

  249. time, standing next to that person is someone

  250. singing with courage. One person has no fear.

  251. The other person has fear, but yet they still

  252. proceed with it. Right? So courage is not the

  253. absence of fear. Courage is the presence of fear,

  254. but yet you still move ahead with it. That's

  255. courage. You know, if there's ever a place I

  256. learned, I started in my ministry learning courage,

  257. it was when I was a literature evangelist. When

  258. I was a coal porter. You know? When I had to

  259. go knock on those doors. It took a lot of courage,

  260. and we would knock on about 70, 80 doors a day.

  261. Each door, each door, each door taught me to

  262. be courageous. Each door, right? You have this

  263. internal fear that they might do something, but

  264. yet you still proceed along with it because someone

  265. needs to know about Jesus. So courage is not

  266. the removal of fear. Courage acknowledges fear,

  267. but yet still proceeds with it. Tell you what

  268. courage is not. is not recklessness I was driving

  269. the other day and as I was driving on interstate

  270. 75 I saw this car group of young people they

  271. were weaving between the cars they were going

  272. at least at least 130 miles an hour and they

  273. were just weaving from car to car and I could

  274. see the young people inside they were high -fiving

  275. each other and I could probably I could probably

  276. see and listen to their conversation saying to

  277. the driver, wow, that was courageous of you to

  278. dodge that truck. Friends, that's not courage,

  279. that's stupidity. So let's not mix up courage

  280. and stupidity. Courage and recklessness, that's

  281. presumption. I want to make it very clear what

  282. courage is not. Courage is not coercion. If you

  283. are forced to take an action, that's not courage.

  284. If you are forced to stand up here and sing so

  285. you can have someone singing with confidence

  286. and standing next to that person is someone who's

  287. singing with courage and then standing next to

  288. that person is someone who's being coerced to

  289. sing. You see, in order for courage to be genuine,

  290. it must be a voluntary act. Or a choice. That's

  291. courage. Courage is not when you are forced to

  292. do something. And we see in scripture the display

  293. of courage. The three Hebrew boys, they refused

  294. to bow down to the image. That's courage. Not

  295. because they were forced to do it, but because

  296. they chose to. They loved their God so much that

  297. they willingly surrendered their life to God.

  298. Jesus displayed courage. No one forced Jesus

  299. to go to the cross. Courage is not coercion.

  300. He laid down his life voluntarily. That's courage.

  301. When we think of courage, we often think of physical

  302. courage, emotional courage. But I want to make

  303. it very clear what kind of courage I'm talking

  304. about this morning. If there's ever a courage

  305. that matters, it's moral courage. That's the

  306. kind of courage that will get us into glory land.

  307. No other courage matters. That's the kind of

  308. courage that Ellen White says the greatest one

  309. of the world is the one of men. Men who will

  310. not be bought or sold. And when she talks about

  311. men, she's not talking about the gender man.

  312. She's talking about mankind. The greatest one

  313. of the world are men and women who will not be

  314. bought or sold. Men who will call sin by its

  315. right name. Men whose true to duty is a needle

  316. to the pole. That's moral courage. That's the

  317. kind of courage we need today. And courage, I

  318. believe, when I analyze courage and I think about

  319. courage in our everyday life, I truly believe

  320. that courage should be our first virtue. If you

  321. want to be successful, it takes courage. If you

  322. want to learn and explore new things, you've

  323. got to have courage, yes or no. If you want to

  324. forgive your neighbor, You've got to have courage

  325. to call that person up. You've got to have courage

  326. to cross over to the other side and shake their

  327. hand and talk to them. It takes courage. If you

  328. want to reconcile with someone that has offended

  329. you, it takes courage. If you want to discover

  330. truth, it's going to take some courage, my brother.

  331. When I didn't grow up an Adventist, I grew up

  332. a Methodist. I'll tell you if there's one truth.

  333. that I needed courage to accept. It was the Sabbath.

  334. Now for those of you who were born and raised

  335. in the church, you may not realize this, but

  336. for those of you who did not grow up in Adventist,

  337. you probably can resonate with this. You see,

  338. in order for me to accept the Sabbath, I had

  339. to reject Sunday. And that takes courage. Can

  340. you resonate with me? It takes courage to discover

  341. truth. It takes courage. In order for me to accept

  342. that my body is the temple of the living God,

  343. I've got to reject certain kinds of foods. That

  344. takes courage. So you see, dear friends, courage

  345. is the first virtue. If you want to love your

  346. enemy, it's going to take courage. If you want

  347. to grow your church, it's going to take courage.

  348. If you want to do evangelism, it's going to take

  349. courage. You can have a nice articulated vision

  350. for your church. But it takes courage to act

  351. on that vision. You can have board meetings all

  352. day long. And you can come up with nice agendas.

  353. But it's going to take courage to implement those

  354. agendas. Courage. Greatest one of the world is

  355. the one of men. Courage is the first virtue.

  356. One of the most encouraging promises in scripture.

  357. I'm coming to a close here. Joshua chapter 1

    Joshua 1:9

  358. verse 9. Listen to this. God says, have not I.

  359. I've often wondered about this and I've asked

  360. myself, why is this in a question form? Why is

  361. it in a statement? Why doesn't just God come

  362. out directly and say, Joshua, be of good courage.

  363. But instead the Bible words it in a question

  364. form. It says, have not I commanded thee? And

  365. I can't help but think that the reason why God

  366. puts it in question form is because Often times

  367. we easily forget. And so God will have to keep

  368. reminding us. Didn't I command you? Didn't I

  369. command you? Be of good courage. Don't you remember?

  370. What was it that Joshua was supposed to remember?

  371. You see 40 years earlier. This was the same word

  372. that God gave Joshua. When they were about to

  373. scalp Canaan land. Be of good courage. And so

  374. here in Joshua chapter 1 verse 9. God was reminding

    Joshua 1:9

  375. Joshua. Of what he told him in Numbers chapter

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  376. 13. Didn't I tell you? Before you were to go

  377. and scout this new territory. Be of good courage.

  378. May you never forget that. We have nothing to

  379. fear for the future. Except we forget how God

  380. has led us in the past. Have not I reminded you?

  381. Be of good courage. Be of good courage. Joshua

  382. and Caleb displays this courage. One of the things

  383. we must remember. Courage doesn't come by just

  384. walking out there and says, well, I'm going to

  385. have courage. Courage rests upon God's word.

  386. Here in this book is the source of courage. When

  387. you spend time in God's word, when you make this

  388. book top priority in your life, you will find

  389. and you will notice your courage being strengthened.

  390. Day by day. No other book can give you courage

  391. like this book right here. I often have to remind

  392. my students every now and then what the pen of

  393. inspiration says. Ellen White says, no other

  394. book can do to your mind what this book can do.

  395. No other subject can do to your human brain what

  396. this subject can do. The subject of redemption.

  397. She says, no other book can do to your human

  398. brain. She says, this book, this subject. can

  399. expand the faculties of your mind. And I say

  400. that with all respect to all the other disciplines

  401. that are being taught in university, but know

  402. what a subject can do to your human brain, what

  403. this subject can do. And it's the same as courage.

  404. There are psychology books on courage. There

  405. are magazines on courage. But if you want godly

  406. courage, here's the source right here. I believe

  407. as we're about to embark in the next few weeks

  408. with this upcoming evangelistic meeting, I'm

  409. convinced we already have all the knowledge.

  410. We just need courage. We have all the light.

  411. We need courage. Would you say amen? We've sermonized.

  412. We've taught. We've listened to Sabbath school.

  413. We have this podcast, that podcast. With this

  414. media ministry, we have all the knowledge and

  415. information on how to do evangelism. Let's step

  416. out in courage. And let's put these things into

  417. practice and the Lord will bless. May God bless

  418. us. May God keep us as we pray for the success

  419. of these evangelistic meetings. It's going to

  420. take courage. It's going to take courage for

  421. you to step out in faith and invite someone to

  422. give a Bible study, to receive a Bible study.

  423. It's going to take courage for you to invite

  424. someone to these meetings. Yes, you will be ridiculed.

  425. You will be misunderstood. You will be tired.

  426. But be of good courage. And the Lord will bless.

  427. This courage can only come from the Lord. How

  428. many of you today want to say, Lord, give me

  429. that courage? I don't have that courage in and

  430. of my own self. I need that courage from you.

  431. Is that your prayer this morning? That's my prayer

  432. too. Let's pray. Father in heaven, give us the

  433. courage that we don't have, that only comes from

  434. your word. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
