  1. Let me ask you, are you a wise person?

  2. Well, before you answer that, what does it mean to be wise?

  3. You know, anybody can probably fix their own, coin their own definition and make them to be wise.

  4. But let's look at it.

  5. The word wise in the dictionary says this.

  6. To be wise means having the power of discerning and judging correctly as to what is true or right.

  7. Wisdom.

  8. It's not about just being smart.

  9. Just having a high IQ.

  10. Even what you would call a secular dictionary definition says

  11. that wisdom involves the power of discerning and judging correctly as to what is true or right.

  12. Being wise is not the same as being intelligent or academically inclined.

  13. You know people that are highly intelligent, but they aren't wise.

  14. They don't demonstrate good judgment.

  15. You might even say they don't have any common sense.

  16. On the other hand, you know some people that you really respect because they are wise and give wise advice.

  17. But they're not highly educated.

  18. They're not intellectually gifted.

  19. Look on the screen at an example of someone who was obviously not very smart,

  20. but he sometimes demonstrated real wisdom.

  21. Go see.

  22. I ain't bees coming with the uniforms.

  23. I promised I'd get her another sewing machine.

  24. Take charge here.

  25. Okay, Gummer.

  26. You heard what Andy said.

  27. I'm in charge.

  28. Let's get cutting.

  29. You crawl in under there and I'll go get the jack.

  30. Right.

  31. Okay.

  32. Stamp under there.

  33. Could be spiders.

  34. Now what makes you think there's spiders under there?

  35. Call a spider spider.

  36. That's where I'd go.

  37. Gummer, there's no spiders under there.

  38. Now let's get moving.

  39. I don't know.

  40. Sure looks spidery to me.

  41. There's no spiders under there.

  42. Now we establish.

  43. You would never list Gummer Pyle as one of the smartest or wisest people you know, would you?

  44. But even Gummer Pyle knew that a dark and damp place like that was a good place for a spider.

  45. And he was wise enough, he wasn't going to crawl up under there no matter what Barney told him.

  46. Many people in this world possess that kind of wisdom.

  47. It's not something just reserved for Christians.

  48. It's really a part of us being created in the image of God.

  49. I'm beginning a new series this morning called Becoming Wise.

  50. We're going to begin in James chapter 3, verses 13 through 18,

    James 3:13–18

  51. and just really get started there today and come back and finish it next week.

  52. And then we're going to move to the book of Proverbs,

  53. the most well-known book of wisdom in the Bible.

  54. As I go wherever I go,

  55. talk to whoever,

  56. I can't find anyone who is not discouraged

  57. about the present condition of our country right now.

  58. Especially the political chaos that we call a presidential election process.

  59. I mean, people of whatever political persuasion,

  60. people of all walks of life, it seems,

  61. are discouraged,

  62. are pessimistic

  63. about what we see happening around about us,

  64. not just in the political world,

  65. but there too.

  66. What I want us to understand is what we see happening

  67. and not happening before us

  68. is really just a symptom of the deeper moral

  69. and spiritual crisis

  70. that exists in our country.

  71. We desperately need God's wisdom

  72. in every possible way.

  73. And I want us to start seeking it

  74. by looking at God's Word

  75. today in James chapter 3.

    James 3 chapter mention

  76. Let's look at it.

  77. James 3, 13.

  78. Who is wise and understanding among you?

  79. By his good conduct,

  80. let him show his works

  81. in the meekness of wisdom.

  82. But if you have bitter jealousy

  83. and selfish ambition in your hearts,

  84. do not boast

  85. and be false to the truth.

  86. This is not the wisdom

  87. that comes down from above,

  88. but is earthly,

  89. unspiritual,

  90. demonic.

  91. For where jealousy

  92. and selfish ambition exist,

  93. there will be disorder

  94. and every vile practice.

  95. But the wisdom from above

  96. is first pure,

  97. then peaceable,

  98. gentle,

  99. open to reason,

  100. full of mercy

  101. and good fruits,

  102. impartial

  103. and sincere.

  104. And a harvest of righteousness

  105. is sown in peace

  106. by those who make peace.

  107. I want us to look at verse 13 in particular

  108. and the question

  109. that James begins

  110. by asking.

  111. Who is wise and understanding among you?

  112. And then you look at what's said next,

  113. you know,

  114. he's not looking for an answer in words.

  115. He's looking for an answer

  116. in people's works.

  117. James is not saying,

  118. define wisdom.

  119. He's not telling us even to describe it.

  120. He's telling us to show it

  121. by the way that we live.

  122. He then describes characteristics

  123. of two different kinds of wisdom,

  124. earthly wisdom

  125. and heavenly wisdom.

  126. Now,

  127. you notice that everything James says

  128. about earthly wisdom

  129. or just human wisdom

  130. is negative.

  131. The reason he does that

  132. in this context

  133. is because he is comparing it

  134. with the wisdom

  135. that comes from God.

  136. There is a

  137. huge difference

  138. between the wisdom

  139. that God gives

  140. to his people

  141. and what we might call

  142. the natural human wisdom

  143. that anyone may possess.

  144. But we also need to be clear

  145. that neither James

  146. nor any other Bible writers

  147. deny the reality

  148. of human wisdom.

  149. You just stop

  150. and think about it.

  151. You can think of somebody

  152. that you have really learned

  153. some important things from,

  154. lessons of life.

  155. You consider them to be wise.

  156. Maybe they were a relative,

  157. a coach,

  158. a teacher,

  159. or a good friend.

  160. But they were not Christians.

  161. But as you think back

  162. or just as you know them now,

  163. you know that

  164. there's some wisdom

  165. coming from them.

  166. You know,

  167. throughout the history

  168. of our country,

  169. we as a nation

  170. have been blessed

  171. with wisdom

  172. from leaders

  173. who were not Christians.

  174. in the founding

  175. of our country,

  176. we've read about

  177. non-Christians,

  178. deists,

  179. and others who,

  180. they were wise men

  181. who helped this country

  182. get started

  183. and get started

  184. in a good way.

  185. We've had wise,

  186. non-believing,

  187. non-Christian leaders

  188. in government,

  189. in the military,

  190. in educational institutions,

  191. and in industry.

  192. So we know

  193. there's wisdom

  194. out there

  195. in people

  196. who are not Christians.

  197. There is such a thing

  198. as human wisdom

  199. that has positive benefits.

  200. But James' focus

  201. is on the superiority

  202. of the wisdom

  203. that God gives

  204. to His people.

  205. And the reason

  206. His wisdom

  207. is superior

  208. is because

  209. God's wisdom

  210. is what enables us

  211. to know Him

  212. and know His will

  213. and know how

  214. He intends

  215. for life

  216. to be lived

  217. in this world

  218. in a way

  219. that will please Him

  220. and satisfy us.

  221. That's why God's wisdom

  222. is so important.

  223. And that's going to be

  224. the focus of our teaching

  225. throughout this study.

  226. But it's also important

  227. that we understand

  228. that basic human wisdom

  229. is real

  230. and it is a gift

  231. of God

  232. to all people.

  233. So let's get started.

  234. Number one,

  235. human wisdom

  236. is possible.

  237. Human wisdom,

  238. natural wisdom

  239. we'll say,

  240. is possible

  241. for two reasons.

  242. Number one,

  243. we're created

  244. in the image of God.

  245. The Scripture says

  246. in Genesis 1,

  247. Then God said,

  248. Let us make man

  249. in our image

  250. after our likeness.

  251. So God created man

  252. in His own image.

  253. In the image of God,

  254. He created him.

  255. Male and female,

  256. He created them.

  257. The theologian

  258. Wayne Grudem

  259. points out

  260. that the words

  261. image and likeness

  262. refer to something

  263. that is similar

  264. but not identical

  265. to the thing

  266. it represents.

  267. You may have a child

  268. who is like you

  269. in many ways.

  270. There's a resemblance.

  271. There's things

  272. that they do

  273. that is a lot like you

  274. but they're not

  275. the same as you.

  276. Well,

  277. we're created

  278. in the image of God

  279. and that means

  280. we are like Him

  281. in many ways.

  282. Not always,

  283. obviously.

  284. we're not God

  285. but being created

  286. in His image,

  287. in His likeness

  288. means that we are

  289. like Him

  290. in some ways.

  291. Now,

  292. in the context

  293. of us talking

  294. about wisdom,

  295. one of the ways

  296. that we're like God

  297. is our ability

  298. to think,

  299. reason logically,

  300. learn from experience

  301. and then make

  302. wise decisions.

  303. I mean,

  304. you think about it yourself

  305. how you have been able

  306. to think through

  307. problems

  308. things,

  309. think through situations,

  310. reason logically

  311. about it,

  312. maybe learn

  313. from trial and error,

  314. learn from somebody

  315. else's experience

  316. and then you were able

  317. to make a wise decision.

  318. It may have been about

  319. building something.

  320. It may have been about

  321. figuring out something.

  322. It may have been about

  323. relating to people

  324. but you know

  325. what we're talking about here.

  326. being able to have

  327. such wisdom

  328. is what's helped

  329. human beings

  330. move from,

  331. say,

  332. living in caves

  333. thousands of years ago

  334. to living in the kind

  335. of homes we have today

  336. where we're

  337. cooled in the summer,

  338. warm in the winter.

  339. I mean,

  340. we've come a long way

  341. since early man.

  342. We've come a long way

  343. people my age

  344. from when

  345. I was young.

  346. But no other creature

  347. has done this.

  348. Think about it.

  349. Birds

  350. are still building

  351. nests

  352. in trees

  353. with little twigs

  354. just like they've

  355. always done it.

  356. Unless

  357. you

  358. have built

  359. a bird house

  360. for a bird.

  361. A bird would never

  362. think about

  363. building a bird house.

  364. He couldn't

  365. think about it.

  366. He couldn't do it.

  367. Because birds

  368. are not created

  369. in God's image.

  370. We are.

  371. That means

  372. we are people

  373. who are able

  374. to be wise

  375. in many ways.

  376. Now,

  377. after Adam and Eve

  378. sinned,

  379. everything in creation

  380. was corrupted.

  381. The ability

  382. of human beings

  383. to use their

  384. God-like qualities

  385. was greatly distorted

  386. but it was not lost.

  387. Since the fall,

  388. since Genesis 3,

  389. since everybody

  390. after Adam and Eve

  391. has been born

  392. into this world,

  393. everybody has still

  394. been born

  395. created in the image

  396. and likeness

  397. of God.

  398. We still have

  399. those God-like

  400. qualities.

  401. We are able to

  402. understand morality,

  403. to reason,

  404. to use logic,

  405. to create things,

  406. to be wise.

  407. James even points out

  408. in chapter 3,

  409. look up a few verses

  410. back in verse 9,

  411. refers to people

  412. who are made

  413. in the likeness of God.

  414. This is how he uses it.

  415. James is condemning people

  416. who use their tongue

  417. to curse people

  418. who have been created

  419. in the image of God.

  420. Being created

  421. in the image of God

  422. makes you,

  423. makes all people,

  424. someone of worth,

  425. of value,

  426. of dignity.

  427. That's really the basis

  428. of self-esteem

  429. and the only basis

  430. that we're created

  431. in the image of God,

  432. the likeness of God.

  433. That's one reason

  434. why we can be wise.

  435. A second reason

  436. is because of God's

  437. common grace.

  438. You understand

  439. God's saving grace.

  440. You're familiar

  441. with that passage

  442. in Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  443. that says,

  444. for by grace

  445. are you saved

  446. through faith.

  447. We understand

  448. God's saving grace.

  449. He shows us

  450. His undeserved favor

  451. through faith in Jesus.

  452. Well, God's common grace

  453. is also His undeserved favor,

  454. but it's shown

  455. to all people

  456. as He blesses them

  457. with the talents,

  458. abilities,

  459. and resources

  460. to do all the things

  461. that it's possible

  462. for us to do

  463. in this world.

  464. Jesus talked about this

  465. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  466. He gave this example

  467. of God's common grace.

  468. Look at it in Matthew 5.

  469. Jesus said,

  470. for He,

  471. that is God,

  472. makes His Son

  473. rise on the evil

  474. and on the good

  475. and sends rain

  476. on the just

  477. and on the unjust.

  478. I mean,

  479. Jesus is just talking

  480. about a simple,

  481. the simple way

  482. God just

  483. blesses people.

  484. You've got some

  485. godly farmers

  486. over here.

  487. You've got some

  488. ungodly farmers

  489. over there.

  490. Well, God sends rain

  491. on both of them.

  492. God gives favorable

  493. weather conditions

  494. to both.

  495. Both can have

  496. good crops.

  497. Both can be blessed

  498. in this kind of way.

  499. The Apostle Paul

  500. said something

  501. very similar

  502. in Acts 14.

  503. He's writing to,

  504. or he's talking

  505. to pagans,

  506. unbelievers,

  507. and he's trying

  508. to help them understand

  509. how God's always

  510. been involved

  511. in your life.

  512. God is real.

  513. You just haven't

  514. known Him.

  515. But Paul was making

  516. Him known.

  517. Look at what he said.

  518. Yet he,

  519. that is God,

  520. did not leave

  521. himself without witness,

  522. for he did good

  523. by giving you

  524. rains from heaven

  525. and fruitful seasons,

  526. satisfying your hearts

  527. with food

  528. and gladness.

  529. See,

  530. God's common grace

  531. has always been

  532. in this world.

  533. He's always shown

  534. His undeserved favor

  535. to people in general

  536. just by sending

  537. good weather,

  538. enabling us

  539. to do the kind

  540. of things

  541. that we can do

  542. and discover.

  543. Tim Keller,

  544. influential pastor

  545. in New York City,

  546. Redeemer of Presbyterian Church.

  547. He does an excellent

  548. job of explaining

  549. how all people,

  550. all of us,

  551. are beneficiaries

  552. of God's common grace.

  553. Look at what he says.

  554. God gives out

  555. gifts of wisdom,

  556. talent,

  557. beauty,

  558. and skill

  559. according to His grace.

  560. that is,

  561. in a completely

  562. unmerited way.

  563. He casts them

  564. across the human race

  565. like seed

  566. in order to enrich,

  567. brighten,

  568. and preserve the world.

  569. By rights,

  570. sin should be making

  571. life on earth here

  572. much more unbearable

  573. than it is.

  574. And in fact,

  575. all of creation

  576. and culture

  577. should have fallen apart

  578. by now.

  579. The reason that it is

  580. not worse

  581. is because of the gift

  582. of common grace.

  583. Without an understanding

  584. of common grace,

  585. Christians will have

  586. trouble understanding

  587. why non-Christians

  588. so often exceed

  589. Christians morally

  590. and in wisdom.

  591. I've always heard

  592. people talk about

  593. and trying to argue

  594. against

  595. how we're all born

  596. as sinners

  597. and in need

  598. of a Savior.

  599. I've always heard

  600. people say,

  601. but I know

  602. these people

  603. who are not Christians

  604. and they're more

  605. morally upright

  606. than most church members.

  607. That's true.

  608. But the truth is,

  609. as Keller points out,

  610. it's because of God's

  611. common grace.

  612. He's just used

  613. some people

  614. in some good

  615. and helpful ways

  616. because that's how

  617. he accomplished

  618. his purpose.

  619. Such common grace wisdom

  620. that we're talking

  621. about here

  622. is how all cultures

  623. throughout history

  624. have had wise men

  625. and the Bible

  626. talks about that.

  627. The Bible refers

  628. to wise men.

  629. The wise men

  630. of Israel's

  631. pagan,

  632. unbelieving neighbors.

  633. The Bible refers

  634. to them as having

  635. a certain kind

  636. of wisdom.

  637. Look at it

  638. from 1 Kings chapter 4.

    1 Kings 4 chapter mention

  639. And God gave Solomon

  640. wisdom and understanding

  641. beyond measure

  642. so that Solomon's wisdom

  643. surpassed the wisdom

  644. of all the people

  645. of the east

  646. and all of the wisdom

  647. of Egypt.

  648. Now,

  649. this description

  650. of Solomon's wisdom

  651. exceeding the wisdom

  652. of everyone else

  653. meant that everyone else

  654. did have wisdom.

  655. You can't exceed

  656. other people's wisdom

  657. if they don't have any.

  658. So the Bible's acknowledging

  659. unbelieving people

  660. can be wise.

  661. Old Testament scholar

  662. Derek Kidner

  663. explains how this is taught

  664. throughout the Old Testament.

  665. He says,

  666. The Old Testament

  667. clearly implies

  668. that a man can still

  669. think validly

  670. and talk wisely

  671. within a limited field

  672. without special revelation.

  673. So what we're doing here,

  674. we're beginning

  675. a study of wisdom.

  676. As we do this,

  677. honesty requires

  678. that we acknowledge

  679. that God created

  680. all human beings

  681. with a capacity

  682. for wisdom.

  683. and God

  684. has so worked

  685. in some people

  686. by His common grace

  687. that we see it.

  688. We see

  689. wise people

  690. benefit

  691. from their wisdom,

  692. but they're not Christians.

  693. We've got to be

  694. very careful now

  695. about thinking

  696. too highly

  697. of our capacity

  698. for wisdom.

  699. Point number two,

  700. human wisdom

  701. is limited.

  702. Only God's wisdom

  703. is without limitation.

  704. Even if sin

  705. had not entered

  706. the world,

  707. human wisdom

  708. would never be

  709. equal with God's

  710. because we're not God.

  711. We're not all-knowing,

  712. all-powerful,

  713. everywhere present.

  714. But since everything

  715. has been corrupted

  716. by sin,

  717. we know for a fact

  718. that our wisdom

  719. is not only limited,

  720. our wisdom

  721. is flawed.

  722. I want us to look

  723. at two examples

  724. of imperfect wisdom.

  725. First,

  726. we don't always

  727. know the facts

  728. in a given situation.

  729. Lisa and I

  730. a while back

  731. were going to a place

  732. in Anderson

  733. on Highway 81.

  734. Well,

  735. I knew that we could

  736. get there quicker

  737. and avoid a lot

  738. of traffic

  739. at that time of day

  740. by going through

  741. easily and some

  742. back roads

  743. and weaving our way

  744. to Highway 81.

  745. I've done it before

  746. and you could do it

  747. and we took off.

  748. But we got down

  749. one of those

  750. back roads

  751. and all of a sudden

  752. the road was blocked.

  753. There was a sign,

  754. Road Closed.

  755. So we had to turn around.

  756. We had to turn around

  757. and find another way

  758. and we wound up

  759. taking more time

  760. getting there

  761. than I intended

  762. for us to take.

  763. It took a lot longer

  764. going that way.

  765. I made an unwise

  766. decision to take

  767. those back roads

  768. but it was not

  769. a foolish decision

  770. because I didn't

  771. know the road

  772. was closed.

  773. For us,

  774. we don't always

  775. act wisely

  776. because we don't

  777. know all the facts.

  778. But God always

  779. acts wisely

  780. because He knows

  781. all the facts.

  782. Another reason

  783. why we act

  784. unwisely sometimes

  785. is because we're

  786. incapable

  787. of understanding

  788. all the facts.

  789. Let's think,

  790. if we went over

  791. to the preschool area

  792. right now,

  793. and I walked up

  794. to one of the

  795. three-year-olds

  796. and I said,

  797. here is a dime,

  798. here is a nickel.

  799. You can have

  800. whichever one you want

  801. and I put them

  802. in my hand

  803. where they can see

  804. the dime

  805. and the nickel.

  806. That three-year-old

  807. most likely

  808. will pick

  809. the nickel

  810. because it's bigger.

  811. That does not

  812. mean that three-year-old

  813. is foolish.

  814. It just means

  815. that that three-year-old

  816. hasn't learned

  817. the value

  818. of coins yet.

  819. That three-year-old

  820. is incapable

  821. of understanding

  822. the dime is worth

  823. more than the nickel

  824. because he thinks

  825. bigger is better.

  826. We don't always

  827. act wisely

  828. because sometimes

  829. we're not capable

  830. of understanding

  831. all the facts

  832. in a given situation.

  833. But God always

  834. acts wisely

  835. because he not only

  836. knows the facts,

  837. he understands

  838. and he also knows

  839. how he is going

  840. to work

  841. to bring about

  842. his purpose

  843. in our lives

  844. and in the situation.

  845. Human wisdom

  846. is always limited

  847. because there's things

  848. that we do not know

  849. and we're not capable

  850. of knowing.

  851. that's why we

  852. need

  853. the special gift

  854. of wisdom

  855. that God gives

  856. to his children.

  857. But there's one more

  858. aspect of human wisdom

  859. that we must look at

  860. because it is

  861. the major emphasis

  862. of the Bible's teaching

  863. on wisdom.

  864. Number three,

  865. human wisdom

  866. is defective.

  867. Human wisdom

  868. has been corrupted

  869. by sin

  870. as I pointed out

  871. earlier.

  872. when Adam and Eve

  873. sinned in the

  874. Garden of Eden,

  875. it corrupted everything

  876. that God had created

  877. including human wisdom.

  878. Now one of the most

  879. devastating aspects

  880. of human wisdom,

  881. one of the things

  882. that makes it

  883. so defective

  884. is that

  885. it cannot enable us

  886. to understand God

  887. or understand

  888. or understand

  889. the things

  890. of God.

  891. Paul pointed out

  892. the inferiority

  893. of human wisdom

  894. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  895. chapter 1

  896. and chapter 2.

  897. Paul goes

  898. to great lengths

  899. in those two chapters

  900. to say

  901. wise people

  902. in this world

  903. could never

  904. figure out

  905. that God's

  906. way of salvation

  907. was through

  908. sending his son

  909. to die

  910. a criminal's death

  911. on the cross

  912. and that

  913. we could be

  914. forgiven

  915. by trusting

  916. in him.

  917. Look at what

  918. he says

  919. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1:20

  920. chapter 1

  921. verse 20

  922. to start with.

  923. Has not God

  924. made foolish

  925. the wisdom

  926. of the world?

  927. For since

  928. in the wisdom

  929. of God

  930. the world

  931. did not know

  932. God

  933. through wisdom.

  934. It pleased God

  935. through the folly

  936. of what was preached

  937. to save those

  938. who believe.

  939. nobody could ever

  940. figure out God

  941. God's ways.

  942. God had to make

  943. it known

  944. and he made it

  945. known in ways

  946. that caused

  947. wise people

  948. to think

  949. that's just crazy.

  950. The Greeks

  951. they thought

  952. it was foolishness.

  953. They laughed.

  954. God's

  955. it takes

  956. God's

  957. wisdom

  958. God's

  959. opening our minds

  960. to be able

  961. to believe

  962. the gospel

  963. to know

  964. it's real

  965. to trust

  966. Jesus that way.

  967. He also

  968. goes on

  969. in 1 Corinthians 2

  970. the natural

  971. person does not

  972. accept the things

  973. of the Spirit

  974. of God

  975. for they are

  976. folly to him

  977. and he is not

  978. able to understand

  979. them because

  980. they are

  981. spiritually

  982. discerned.

  983. What Paul

  984. is saying here

  985. is why

  986. Solomon

  987. was greater

  988. Solomon's

  989. wisdom

  990. was greater

  991. than all

  992. the wisdom

  993. of the pagan

  994. wise men

  995. in his day.

  996. Solomon's

  997. wisdom

  998. was greater

  999. because God

  1000. had given him

  1001. a special

  1002. gift.

  1003. God had

  1004. given him

  1005. his wisdom

  1006. wisdom from

  1007. above

  1008. wisdom

  1009. from heaven.

  1010. Now going

  1011. back to James

  1012. James tells us

  1013. that there are

  1014. two kinds

  1015. of wisdom

  1016. at work

  1017. in people's

  1018. lives.

  1019. Wisdom

  1020. of the world

  1021. or human

  1022. wisdom

  1023. that's in

  1024. verses 13

  1025. through 16

  1026. than the

  1027. wisdom

  1028. of God.

  1029. That's in

  1030. verses 13

  1031. and 17

  1032. and 18.

  1033. We're going

  1034. to look at

  1035. that in

  1036. detail next

  1037. week.

  1038. What I want

  1039. us to

  1040. understand on

  1041. this first

  1042. Sunday of

  1043. seeking to

  1044. find out

  1045. what it

  1046. means to be

  1047. wise,

  1048. I want us

  1049. to understand

  1050. human wisdom

  1051. is real

  1052. and it

  1053. does have

  1054. many positive

  1055. benefits.

  1056. That's

  1057. because we're

  1058. created in

  1059. the image

  1060. of God

  1061. and God

  1062. by his

  1063. common

  1064. grace

  1065. continues

  1066. to work

  1067. and bless

  1068. people's

  1069. lives.

  1070. The wisdom

  1071. of someone

  1072. not very

  1073. bright

  1074. like

  1075. Gomer

  1076. Powell

  1077. and

  1078. technological

  1079. geniuses

  1080. like Steve

  1081. Jobs

  1082. are good

  1083. examples

  1084. of this

  1085. human

  1086. earthly

  1087. kind of

  1088. wisdom.

  1089. But as

  1090. we're going

  1091. to see in

  1092. James

  1093. next week

  1094. and as

  1095. we've already

  1096. read this

  1097. morning

  1098. and we're

  1099. going to

  1100. see throughout

  1101. the book

  1102. of Proverbs

  1103. in the coming

  1104. weeks,

  1105. human wisdom

  1106. is inferior

  1107. to the wisdom

  1108. that God

  1109. gives to

  1110. his people.

  1111. The reason

  1112. that our

  1113. country's

  1114. in the

  1115. mess

  1116. that we're

  1117. in today

  1118. is because

  1119. most people

  1120. function with

  1121. only human

  1122. wisdom,

  1123. worldly

  1124. wisdom.

  1125. We know

  1126. that's true

  1127. by reading

  1128. what James

  1129. says about

  1130. it.

  1131. This is what

  1132. we see

  1133. every day

  1134. all around

  1135. us,

  1136. isn't it?

  1137. Look in

  1138. verse 16.

  1139. For where

  1140. jealousy

  1141. and selfish

  1142. ambition

  1143. exist,

  1144. there will

  1145. be

  1146. disorder

  1147. and every

  1148. vile or

  1149. evil

  1150. practice

  1151. all around

  1152. us today.

  1153. People

  1154. can't

  1155. appreciate

  1156. what other

  1157. people have

  1158. and do.

  1159. We're

  1160. jealous.

  1161. We're all

  1162. about

  1163. ourselves.

  1164. We're

  1165. selfish.

  1166. We have

  1167. selfish

  1168. ambition.

  1169. And so

  1170. the result

  1171. is just

  1172. about

  1173. everywhere

  1174. you

  1175. look,

  1176. there's

  1177. disorder

  1178. and every

  1179. vile

  1180. practice.

  1181. I have

  1182. no

  1183. political

  1184. motive

  1185. behind

  1186. this,

  1187. but I

  1188. think you

  1189. could

  1190. describe

  1191. the

  1192. democratic

  1193. situation,

  1194. Hillary Clinton's

  1195. campaign,

  1196. and the

  1197. Republican,

  1198. Donald Trump's

  1199. campaign,

  1200. both

  1201. campaigns of

  1202. disorder

  1203. and every

  1204. vile

  1205. practice.

  1206. Think about

  1207. what you

  1208. read,

  1209. what you

  1210. hear,

  1211. what you

  1212. see.

  1213. I want

  1214. to encourage

  1215. you to

  1216. make a

  1217. commitment

  1218. to be a

  1219. part of

  1220. these

  1221. studies

  1222. with a

  1223. prayer that

  1224. God will

  1225. help you

  1226. to truly

  1227. understand

  1228. His

  1229. wisdom,

  1230. why you

  1231. need it,

  1232. and how

  1233. you can

  1234. come to

  1235. possess it

  1236. and experience

  1237. it.

  1238. I want to

  1239. encourage you

  1240. to go ahead

  1241. and start

  1242. reading in

  1243. the book

  1244. of Proverbs.

  1245. We'll start

  1246. two weeks

  1247. from today,

  1248. Proverbs

  1249. 1-1,

  1250. and we're

  1251. going to

  1252. move through

  1253. most of

  1254. that book.

  1255. But in

  1256. this crazy

  1257. and chaotic

  1258. world

  1259. that we're

  1260. in,

  1261. we know

  1262. we desperately

  1263. need what

  1264. we don't

  1265. have.

  1266. we desperately

  1267. need the

  1268. special wisdom

  1269. that God

  1270. gives to

  1271. His people.

  1272. But get

  1273. this now,

  1274. God's only

  1275. going to

  1276. give this

  1277. wisdom,

  1278. His wisdom,

  1279. to us,

  1280. His people,

  1281. if, number

  1282. one, we

  1283. value it,

  1284. we want it,

  1285. and if,

  1286. number two,

  1287. we put forth

  1288. the effort

  1289. to seek it

  1290. and acquire it.

  1291. Let's pray

  1292. together.

  1293. Father,

  1294. Father,

  1295. help us to

  1296. see that

  1297. while we

  1298. may display

  1299. some good

  1300. qualities of

  1301. human wisdom

  1302. as we see

  1303. in this world,

  1304. help us,

  1305. Father,

  1306. to see

  1307. that it

  1308. is

  1309. inadequate.

  1310. It will

  1311. not help

  1312. us to

  1313. truly know

  1314. You and

  1315. Your ways

  1316. and Your

  1317. will so

  1318. that we

  1319. can do

  1320. Your will

  1321. and please

  1322. You.

  1323. It won't

  1324. help us to

  1325. live life

  1326. in a way

  1327. that serves

  1328. Your purpose,

  1329. helps truly

  1330. other people,

  1331. and brings

  1332. joy to our

  1333. own lives.

  1334. Help us to

  1335. see, Father,

  1336. that it's

  1337. human wisdom

  1338. only.

  1339. It's got us

  1340. to where we

  1341. are today.

  1342. So help us,

  1343. dear God,

  1344. to desire

  1345. and to be

  1346. willing to

  1347. seek

  1348. wisdom

  1349. from You.

  1350. Wisdom

  1351. that brings

  1352. about

  1353. peace,

  1354. gentleness,

  1355. reasonableness,

  1356. mercy,

  1357. impartiality,

  1358. sincerity,

  1359. and all

  1360. kinds of

  1361. good fruits.

  1362. Show us,

  1363. Father,

  1364. how we should

  1365. respond to You

  1366. this morning,

  1367. the kind of

  1368. commitment we

  1369. should make.

  1370. Help us to do

  1371. that now.

  1372. In an attitude

  1373. of prayer,

  1374. listen to the

  1375. Lord,

  1376. do what He's

  1377. telling you to

  1378. do.

  1379. If I could pray

  1380. with you during

  1381. this time,

  1382. I'd be happy

  1383. to do that.

  1384. I'll be here

  1385. at the front.

  1386. I'll be here

  1387. at the front.

  1388. I'll be here

  1389. at the front.
