  1. Do you consider yourself to be a wise person?

  2. That's how I began the message last week.

  3. And it's important that we consider that again today.

  4. Because that's the question that James begins this section of Scripture,

  5. chapter 3, verse 13.

  6. He's asking the question,

  7. Who is wise and understanding among you?

  8. But he's not looking for an answer in words.

  9. He is looking for us to respond by pointing to our life,

  10. pointing to our works.

  11. Look at it.

  12. James chapter 3, verse 13.

    James 3:13

  13. Who is wise and understanding among you?

  14. By his good conduct, let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

  15. Look on the screen and notice that in the NIV translation.

  16. Who is wise and understanding among you?

  17. Let them show it by their good life,

  18. by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

  19. You hear what James is saying.

  20. The truly wise person,

  21. as God would consider wise,

  22. is the person whose life is characterized by

  23. good works

  24. done in humility.

  25. Now I think it's always important

  26. in a setting like this,

  27. in a Sunday school class,

  28. in a sermon,

  29. when you talk about good works,

  30. to explain,

  31. because so many people think

  32. the way you're right with God,

  33. the way that you go to heaven when you die,

  34. is by doing certain things,

  35. doing good works.

  36. And if you do enough good works

  37. to outweigh the bad works,

  38. then you'll be right with God now and forevermore.

  39. Well, that's not true.

  40. That is our just

  41. faulty human logic

  42. and wisdom thinking that way.

  43. We have already studied

  44. in the book of James

  45. how he strongly

  46. stresses

  47. that real Christian faith,

  48. real saving faith,

  49. is not just something we profess,

  50. but it's something that we live out.

  51. Here's how he said it in chapter 1, verse 22.

  52. But be doers of the word

  53. and not hearers only,

  54. deceiving yourselves.

  55. See, if you think

  56. exposing yourself to the word of God

  57. in a place like this,

  58. in a service like this,

  59. or even in your own Bible reading,

  60. just knowing it,

  61. hearing it,

  62. but not with God's help

  63. obeying it

  64. because you want to obey it,

  65. you're deceiving yourself.

  66. He goes on in chapter 2

  67. to talk about the importance of

  68. real faith will be seen in our works,

  69. and he completes that

  70. section in chapter 2, verse 26.

  71. He says,

  72. For as the body apart from the spirit

  73. is dead,

  74. so also faith apart from works

  75. is dead.

  76. So I want you just to be clear about that.

  77. As now James is pointing out,

  78. that Christians who have a God-given wisdom

  79. will show it

  80. by the humble way they go about

  81. doing things that serve other people,

  82. that please God.

  83. True Christian good works.

  84. Now, he goes on in verses 14 through 18

  85. to point out there's actually

  86. two kinds of wisdom

  87. at work in people's lives.

  88. He's contrasting

  89. what we're going to call

  90. earthly wisdom

  91. versus heavenly wisdom,

  92. or you can refer to it as

  93. human wisdom

  94. versus God-given wisdom.

  95. Look at how he describes this.

  96. Verse 14.

  97. But if you have bitter jealousy

  98. and selfish ambition in your hearts,

  99. do not boast

  100. and be false to the truth.

  101. This is not the wisdom

  102. that comes down from above,

  103. but is earthly,

  104. unspiritual,

  105. demonic.

  106. For where jealousy

  107. and selfish ambition exist,

  108. there will be disorder

  109. and every vile

  110. or evil practice.

  111. But the wisdom from above

  112. is first pure,

  113. then peaceable,

  114. gentle,

  115. open to reason,

  116. full of mercy

  117. and good fruits,

  118. impartial

  119. and sincere.

  120. And a harvest of righteousness

  121. is sown in peace

  122. by those who make peace.

  123. after reading that,

  124. which kind of wisdom

  125. do you demonstrate

  126. most of the time?

  127. Now sometimes we just operate

  128. according to this human wisdom,

  129. just our own best thinking,

  130. and it comes out

  131. in some selfishness.

  132. It comes out

  133. in causing problems

  134. with people

  135. maybe in our home

  136. or at work.

  137. But just overall,

  138. as you live your life,

  139. in light of what James says,

  140. do you live according

  141. to just earthly human wisdom?

  142. Or do you demonstrate

  143. that God has given you

  144. His wisdom

  145. and you really seek

  146. to be obedient to Him

  147. in the way you deal

  148. with people

  149. and situations

  150. most of the time?

  151. Well, to help us really

  152. be able to answer that,

  153. let's look closely

  154. at what James says.

  155. Let's look first today

  156. at earthly wisdom.

  157. We're going to come back

  158. next week

  159. and look at

  160. the heavenly wisdom.

  161. First,

  162. earthly wisdom,

  163. we're going to define it

  164. this way,

  165. is man's ability

  166. to discern

  167. and judge correctly

  168. as to what he thinks

  169. is true or right.

  170. Now I'm taking that

  171. from the dictionary definition

  172. I gave you last week

  173. of wisdom.

  174. Wisdom, last week we saw,

  175. is the power of discerning

  176. and judging correctly

  177. as to what is true

  178. or right.

  179. Now think about it.

  180. The world,

  181. in general,

  182. as seen in a dictionary,

  183. thinks of wisdom

  184. as being able to judge,

  185. being able to discern

  186. about what's true or right.

  187. But in the world's way

  188. of looking at things,

  189. God's not a part

  190. of that equation.

  191. And so that's why

  192. we can define

  193. earthly wisdom

  194. as our ability,

  195. human ability,

  196. man's ability

  197. to discern

  198. and judge correctly

  199. as to what he thinks

  200. is true

  201. or right.

  202. Now we looked last week

  203. at earthly wisdom

  204. or human wisdom,

  205. you can call it either one,

  206. in great detail.

  207. I want to quickly review.

  208. We saw that human wisdom

  209. is possible

  210. in a positive sense

  211. because we are created

  212. in the image of God.

  213. It's a part of our

  214. God-given abilities,

  215. being like him,

  216. to have a certain degree

  217. of wisdom.

  218. It's also a part

  219. of God's common grace.

  220. God's common grace

  221. is the undeserved favor

  222. that he shows to everybody.

  223. He just chooses to do that.

  224. Jesus described it like this.

  225. God chooses to send rain

  226. on the good

  227. as well as the evil.

  228. The good farmers,

  229. the faithful,

  230. God-fearing farmers,

  231. as well as the atheist farmers,

  232. they benefit from God's

  233. good weather.

  234. It's part of his common grace,

  235. Jesus said.

  236. Human wisdom is possible,

  237. but human wisdom

  238. is limited

  239. because we do not know

  240. nor can we fully understand

  241. all the facts

  242. in a given situation,

  243. but God can.

  244. God has perfect knowledge

  245. and understanding

  246. of all things

  247. and we lack that knowledge

  248. because we're not God.

  249. So human wisdom is possible,

  250. but it's limited.

  251. But there's more bad news

  252. about it.

  253. Human wisdom

  254. is defective

  255. because of the fall.

  256. Adam and Eve's sin,

  257. it resulted in the corruption

  258. of every aspect of creation.

  259. Our God-given abilities

  260. as a result of being created

  261. in his image,

  262. they were not abolished

  263. by the fall,

  264. they were certainly corrupted.

  265. We, we, we, we,

  266. our wisdom today,

  267. we're using this

  268. as our, our, our point.

  269. Our wisdom today

  270. is defective

  271. because of the fall.

  272. I want you to think

  273. about it like this.

  274. Since Adam and Eve sinned,

  275. every person

  276. comes into this world,

  277. born into this world

  278. with a sinful nature

  279. that makes us

  280. naturally focus

  281. on doing our will

  282. instead of God's will.

  283. The way we're born

  284. with this sinful nature,

  285. we're more concerned

  286. about doing what I want to do

  287. really than what anybody else

  288. wants us to do.

  289. And you see it

  290. in little children

  291. all the way up.

  292. We see it in our own lives.

  293. Left alone,

  294. we will use

  295. our God-given qualities

  296. like wisdom

  297. in basically selfish,

  298. worldly,

  299. and even ungodly ways.

  300. We're going to come to that

  301. in a little bit.

  302. That's because

  303. earthly human wisdom

  304. seeks its knowledge

  305. and understanding

  306. from every source

  307. you can find in this world

  308. except God

  309. and His Word.

  310. That's what James

  311. wants us to understand.

  312. Earthly wisdom,

  313. that which is not from above.

  314. Human wisdom.

  315. There's a certain amount

  316. of it that's,

  317. a certain way to look at it

  318. that's good,

  319. that's positive.

  320. But the problem

  321. with human wisdom

  322. is that

  323. we take

  324. what we can learn,

  325. we take

  326. our experience,

  327. and we just figure things out

  328. based on that,

  329. and we don't even consider

  330. what God's Word says.

  331. We don't seek

  332. His help

  333. in trying to understand

  334. something.

  335. Let me give you an example.

  336. Before we look at all

  337. the negative things

  338. James has to say

  339. about earthly wisdom,

  340. remember last week

  341. that because of God's

  342. common grace,

  343. there are benefits

  344. to human wisdom.

  345. We all benefit

  346. from natural human wisdom

  347. that God has given

  348. to people.

  349. That's how cars

  350. got invented

  351. that we drove here today.

  352. That's why we're in

  353. a climate-controlled building.

  354. Somebody was able

  355. to figure all this out.

  356. So we are all

  357. beneficiaries

  358. of God's common grace

  359. and God's common wisdom.

  360. I want to give you

  361. an example

  362. of the problem.

  363. Many non-Christians

  364. are wise financial managers.

  365. I mean,

  366. they know how to live

  367. within their means.

  368. They know that it's good

  369. to avoid debt

  370. and save money.

  371. There are many

  372. unbelievers,

  373. atheists even,

  374. who can provide

  375. wise counsel

  376. for how you

  377. can manage your money

  378. in the best possible way.

  379. But someone like this

  380. who only has

  381. earthly wisdom,

  382. human wisdom,

  383. they're not going

  384. to lead us

  385. or teach us

  386. to acknowledge

  387. all that we have

  388. comes from God.

  389. God gives us

  390. the ability

  391. to work and make money.

  392. God gives us

  393. the opportunity

  394. to do that.

  395. And they certainly

  396. won't teach us

  397. to give tithes

  398. and offerings

  399. to God

  400. or to seek

  401. to honor God

  402. in what we do

  403. with all of our resources.

  404. People with only

  405. earthly wisdom,

  406. they'll tell you,

  407. you just take care

  408. of your stuff,

  409. manage your resources

  410. well,

  411. take care of yourself,

  412. take care of your

  413. immediate family,

  414. and just do what you

  415. want to do

  416. with your money.

  417. earthly wisdom.

  418. It can be very

  419. helpful at times.

  420. But here's the whole

  421. point of what James

  422. is trying to get us

  423. to understand.

  424. Earthly wisdom

  425. is not sufficient

  426. to show us

  427. how to live

  428. in a way

  429. that honors God,

  430. that will serve

  431. His purpose.

  432. Earthly wisdom

  433. is not even going

  434. to tell us

  435. how to live

  436. and help

  437. and serve

  438. people around us

  439. that God wants us

  440. to help

  441. and serve.

  442. Now,

  443. if we're Christians,

  444. we are more

  445. concerned

  446. about things

  447. than just what

  448. works best for me.

  449. Aren't we?

  450. I mean,

  451. if we really are

  452. Christians,

  453. that God has

  454. put His Spirit

  455. in us,

  456. we have a desire

  457. to really

  458. and truly

  459. know what

  460. pleases Him

  461. and do what

  462. pleases Him.

  463. See,

  464. Paul talks about it

  465. in the second

  466. chapter of Philippians

  467. that God works

  468. in all of His

  469. people,

  470. all of His children

  471. to cause us

  472. to will

  473. and to work

  474. for His good pleasure.

  475. And the only way

  476. we're going to know

  477. how to work

  478. and will

  479. and work

  480. to His good pleasure

  481. is if we have

  482. His

  483. God-given

  484. wisdom.

  485. So,

  486. now,

  487. let's look at

  488. what James says,

  489. how he explains

  490. the problems

  491. with just

  492. earthly wisdom.

  493. Number one,

  494. the self-centeredness

  495. of earthly wisdom.

  496. That's in verse 14.

  497. Look back at it again.

  498. But if you have

  499. bitter jealousy

  500. and selfish ambition

  501. in your hearts,

  502. do not boast

  503. and be false

  504. and be false

  505. to the truth.

  506. One way to spot

  507. someone who

  508. lives by earthly

  509. wisdom

  510. is by something

  511. like bitter jealousy

  512. in them,

  513. selfish ambition.

  514. Bitter jealousy

  515. describes someone

  516. who cannot see

  517. someone else

  518. in a place

  519. of influence

  520. or in a better

  521. place

  522. than them.

  523. A person with

  524. bitter jealousy

  525. resents

  526. when another person

  527. has something

  528. they think

  529. they should have.

  530. Selfish ambition

  531. describes someone

  532. who is determined

  533. to get what they want

  534. no matter what

  535. or who gets hurt.

  536. Now in this context,

  537. James is most likely

  538. describing church members

  539. who are jealous

  540. of teachers

  541. and leaders

  542. in the church

  543. and what they're

  544. thinking is,

  545. I should have been

  546. that teacher.

  547. I should have been

  548. that leader.

  549. They resent

  550. who's there.

  551. Now the reason

  552. we get that idea

  553. is what James says

  554. in chapter 3

  555. verses 1 through 12.

  556. The verses above

  557. where we're reading now.

  558. James has addressed

  559. the issue

  560. not many of you

  561. should become teachers.

  562. Teachers are going

  563. to incur

  564. a stricter judgment

  565. and you better

  566. watch what you say.

  567. You better guard

  568. your tongue.

  569. There's problems

  570. in the church

  571. that come out

  572. throughout this letter

  573. and there's people

  574. in churches

  575. that he's writing to

  576. that they're just

  577. they're bitter,

  578. they're jealous.

  579. All they're concerned

  580. about is themselves.

  581. getting what they want,

  582. what they think

  583. they deserve

  584. and they totally

  585. resent

  586. those who have

  587. somehow or another

  588. got what they want

  589. or been put in a place

  590. that they think

  591. should be theirs.

  592. Now evidently

  593. some of these people

  594. that James is addressing

  595. thought they were right

  596. in their attitude,

  597. in their actions

  598. and so that's why

  599. James says what he did

  600. in the rest of verse 14.

  601. He says,

  602. do not boast

  603. and be false

  604. to the truth.

  605. Some people were

  606. proudly opposing

  607. the teachers

  608. and leaders.

  609. Well James wants them

  610. to know that

  611. their very actions

  612. are a denial

  613. about what the Bible

  614. teaches about

  615. godly wisdom

  616. and Christian character.

  617. By their selfish

  618. and jealous behavior

  619. they're demonstrating

  620. God's not

  621. guiding them.

  622. Their so-called wisdom

  623. doesn't come from him.

  624. Now,

  625. let's think about

  626. this personally.

  627. Do you ever

  628. have a problem

  629. with jealousy

  630. or selfish ambition?

  631. One way to test yourself

  632. is to think about

  633. how you respond

  634. to somebody at work

  635. or somebody at school

  636. or somebody on your team

  637. or in some organization.

  638. How do you respond

  639. to someone

  640. who is recognized

  641. or promoted

  642. or honored

  643. and you aren't?

  644. Can you honestly,

  645. sincerely

  646. congratulate them?

  647. Can you be happy

  648. when somebody

  649. gets a promotion

  650. that you think

  651. I should have got it?

  652. Can you be happy

  653. with somebody

  654. who gets more playing time

  655. on your team

  656. but you think

  657. you should be

  658. playing ahead of them?

  659. You see,

  660. James is not talking

  661. about what's right

  662. or wrong here

  663. in terms of what

  664. you ought to get

  665. or shouldn't get.

  666. He's talking about

  667. how you respond

  668. to what is.

  669. Are you able

  670. to congratulate?

  671. Are you able

  672. to be happy

  673. with people,

  674. for people,

  675. sincerely?

  676. who have

  677. what you wished

  678. you had?

  679. Or are you jealous?

  680. Are you envious?

  681. Are you so mad

  682. and bitter

  683. because you got passed over,

  684. you got overlooked,

  685. but you just can't treat

  686. those other people

  687. the right way?

  688. worldly wisdom

  689. thinking that kind

  690. of way.

  691. It'll make us

  692. self-centered.

  693. That's understandable

  694. when you look next

  695. at the nature

  696. of earthly wisdom.

  697. Let's look at

  698. the ungodly nature

  699. of earthly wisdom

  700. in verse 15.

  701. He says,

  702. this is not the wisdom

  703. that comes down

  704. from above,

  705. but is earthly,

  706. unspiritual,

  707. demonic.

  708. Let's think about

  709. what he's talking about.

  710. Earthly wisdom,

  711. human wisdom.

  712. It is earthly.

  713. He's talking about

  714. a mindset

  715. that refuses

  716. to consider

  717. anything heavenly.

  718. In other words,

  719. it ignores God.

  720. He's talking about

  721. someone

  722. operates from

  723. a wisdom

  724. that just

  725. considers the ways

  726. of the world

  727. and leaves God

  728. out of it.

  729. He says it's also

  730. unspiritual.

  731. He's talking about

  732. natural wisdom

  733. without any of

  734. the supernatural wisdom

  735. that God gives us

  736. through His Spirit.

  737. James is describing

  738. someone

  739. whose wisdom

  740. comes from

  741. just how

  742. he thinks,

  743. just how

  744. she feels

  745. based on what

  746. they read,

  747. based on what

  748. they're told,

  749. based on what

  750. they're experienced.

  751. It's unspiritual.

  752. It's all about

  753. how I think

  754. and feel

  755. with no regard

  756. to what God

  757. might be doing.

  758. And then third

  759. and worst,

  760. it's demonic.

  761. Earthly wisdom

  762. comes from demons

  763. whose leader

  764. is Satan.

  765. Now,

  766. I want you to think

  767. with me.

  768. We can trace

  769. that all the way

  770. back to the fall

  771. in the Garden of Eden.

  772. when all of God's

  773. attributes

  774. that He has given

  775. to human beings,

  776. when all of the

  777. God-given

  778. human qualities

  779. were corrupted

  780. and became

  781. defective.

  782. That's where

  783. human wisdom

  784. became defective,

  785. back in the Garden.

  786. That's the kind

  787. of wisdom

  788. we inherit

  789. naturally

  790. from our parents.

  791. Now,

  792. in thinking about

  793. this worldly wisdom,

  794. it's earthly,

  795. it's unspiritual,

  796. it's demonic,

  797. what would that

  798. actually look like

  799. in a person?

  800. It may be surprising.

  801. It can be found

  802. in our lives

  803. as Christians

  804. just like it is

  805. found in the leader

  806. of the disciples,

  807. Peter.

  808. I want you to look

  809. with me,

  810. think with me.

  811. In Matthew

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  812. chapter 16,

  813. Jesus asked

  814. His disciples,

  815. who do people

  816. say that I am?

  817. And they

  818. said several things

  819. and finally,

  820. Peter,

  821. speaking on behalf

  822. of all the 12,

  823. he said,

  824. you are the Christ,

  825. you are the Son of God

  826. and Jesus commended him.

  827. God has shown you this.

  828. You hadn't figured it out.

  829. God's revealed this to you.

  830. It was an affirming time

  831. and Jesus,

  832. on that occasion,

  833. the Scripture says,

  834. began to teach

  835. those disciples

  836. about why

  837. He really came

  838. into the world

  839. which was going

  840. to be to die

  841. on the cross.

  842. Now when Peter

  843. heard that,

  844. he just said,

  845. you are the Son of God,

  846. you are the Christ.

  847. And Jesus said,

  848. you are right,

  849. that is true,

  850. but I am going

  851. to die.

  852. I am going

  853. to be crucified.

  854. In Peter's mind,

  855. that just couldn't be.

  856. So here is how

  857. he responded.

  858. Peter took him,

  859. that is Jesus,

  860. aside,

  861. and began

  862. to rebuke him.

  863. Never,

  864. Lord,

  865. he said,

  866. this shall never

  867. happen to you.

  868. Now,

  869. before you think,

  870. how could Peter

  871. rebuke,

  872. correct,

  873. reprimand Jesus,

  874. and say,

  875. you don't know

  876. what you are talking about.

  877. He can't be this way.

  878. In Peter's mind,

  879. what Jesus said

  880. just did not make sense.

  881. How could the Son of God,

  882. the Christ,

  883. the Messiah,

  884. be crucified?

  885. Peter just thought,

  886. this must be a long day.

  887. Jesus is confused,

  888. and so he is going

  889. to correct Jesus.

  890. This shall never

  891. happen to you,

  892. he said.

  893. But Jesus took this

  894. very hard.

  895. Look how he responded

  896. to Peter.

  897. He said,

  898. get behind me,

  899. Satan.

  900. You are a hindrance

  901. to me.

  902. For you are not

  903. setting your mind

  904. on the things of God,

  905. but on the things

  906. of man.

  907. Peter was so strongly

  908. rebuked by Jesus

  909. because Peter was

  910. just thinking

  911. naturally.

  912. He was just thinking

  913. and said

  914. just what came

  915. naturally.

  916. He wanted to protect

  917. Jesus and protect

  918. himself.

  919. He was thinking

  920. about surviving.

  921. That's earthly,

  922. unspiritual,

  923. demonic wisdom

  924. in action.

  925. See,

  926. Peter was only

  927. thinking about

  928. what's going

  929. to affect me

  930. and my Lord

  931. and my future.

  932. Peter was not

  933. thinking about

  934. what is God's

  935. plan in all this.

  936. Peter really

  937. wasn't thinking

  938. what is the

  939. Son of God

  940. up to.

  941. He just

  942. naturally

  943. thought Jesus

  944. is wrong.

  945. Earthly

  946. wisdom,

  947. it is

  948. ungodly

  949. in nature.

  950. And then

  951. thirdly,

  952. why don't you

  953. look at the

  954. harmful effects

  955. of earthly

  956. wisdom in

  957. verse 16.

  958. He says,

  959. for where

  960. jealousy and

  961. selfish ambition

  962. exist,

  963. there will be

  964. disorder and

  965. every vile

  966. practice.

  967. The world's

  968. wisdom,

  969. if that's all

  970. there is,

  971. people are

  972. just doing

  973. the best they

  974. can do.

  975. according to

  976. the way they

  977. think and

  978. feel and

  979. their own

  980. personal

  981. experiences.

  982. The world's

  983. wisdom will

  984. lead to

  985. chaos and

  986. opens the

  987. door to

  988. all kinds

  989. of evil.

  990. The jealousy

  991. and selfish

  992. ambition of

  993. some church

  994. members that

  995. James is

  996. writing to

  997. is causing

  998. all kinds of

  999. church conflict

  1000. that James

  1001. describes in

  1002. chapter 4

  1003. verses 1

  1004. through 5

  1005. and strongly

  1006. condemns them

  1007. for.

  1008. Here's what

  1009. I want you

  1010. to think.

  1011. We see

  1012. evidence of

  1013. such earthly

  1014. wisdom just

  1015. about everywhere

  1016. you turn

  1017. today.

  1018. Look at

  1019. Congress,

  1020. the leaders

  1021. of our

  1022. country.

  1023. Congress is

  1024. a picture of

  1025. disorder,

  1026. of conflict,

  1027. and

  1028. ineffectiveness.

  1029. can you

  1030. argue against

  1031. that?

  1032. Look at the

  1033. Supreme Court.

  1034. It is

  1035. legalizing every

  1036. kind of evil

  1037. practice today,

  1038. especially

  1039. sexual

  1040. perversion.

  1041. Look at

  1042. racial problems

  1043. in this

  1044. country.

  1045. Many of

  1046. those so-called

  1047. leaders who are

  1048. in the spotlight,

  1049. like Jesse

  1050. Jackson and

  1051. Al Sharpton,

  1052. they are

  1053. men who

  1054. operate

  1055. obviously

  1056. according to

  1057. earthly wisdom

  1058. because

  1059. everywhere they

  1060. go,

  1061. they cause

  1062. more disorder

  1063. and deeper

  1064. division

  1065. than existed

  1066. before they

  1067. arrived.

  1068. But I

  1069. want you

  1070. to

  1071. don't dwell

  1072. on Congress

  1073. and Supreme

  1074. Court

  1075. and these

  1076. other things.

  1077. Let's

  1078. bring it

  1079. closer.

  1080. Let's make

  1081. it personal.

  1082. What's the

  1083. environment?

  1084. What's

  1085. happening

  1086. in the

  1087. places where

  1088. you are

  1089. actively

  1090. involved?

  1091. Like your

  1092. home,

  1093. your school,

  1094. your team,

  1095. your workplace?

  1096. Think with

  1097. me.

  1098. Are good

  1099. things

  1100. happening?

  1101. And when I

  1102. use the word

  1103. good here,

  1104. I'm talking

  1105. about things

  1106. that would

  1107. actually please

  1108. God,

  1109. His definition

  1110. of goodness.

  1111. Are people

  1112. demonstrating

  1113. humility?

  1114. Are people

  1115. who call

  1116. themselves

  1117. Christians

  1118. actually living

  1119. like it?

  1120. You see

  1121. Christian

  1122. character

  1123. being displayed

  1124. in their

  1125. life.

  1126. Well,

  1127. if that's

  1128. true,

  1129. then somebody

  1130. is leading

  1131. the way

  1132. by the way

  1133. they exercise

  1134. godly

  1135. wisdom.

  1136. And if

  1137. that's the

  1138. case,

  1139. you need

  1140. to support

  1141. them.

  1142. You need

  1143. to encourage

  1144. them.

  1145. They may

  1146. not be doing

  1147. everything you

  1148. wish they

  1149. would do,

  1150. but something

  1151. good is

  1152. happening and

  1153. you need to

  1154. be one who

  1155. helps that

  1156. along.

  1157. If you're the

  1158. leader of all

  1159. that,

  1160. continue it,

  1161. there'll be

  1162. a lot of

  1163. opposition to

  1164. that.

  1165. If you truly

  1166. exercise godly

  1167. wisdom,

  1168. everybody's not

  1169. going to like

  1170. it.

  1171. But God

  1172. will be

  1173. faithful to

  1174. you.

  1175. You just

  1176. be faithful

  1177. to Him.

  1178. But if in

  1179. those places I

  1180. just described,

  1181. where you are,

  1182. if they're

  1183. characterized by

  1184. disorder and

  1185. evil practices,

  1186. people are

  1187. showing signs

  1188. of bitter

  1189. jealousy and

  1190. selfish ambition,

  1191. you need to

  1192. understand that

  1193. those people

  1194. who are in

  1195. charge are

  1196. not exercising

  1197. godly wisdom.

  1198. That's just

  1199. human wisdom

  1200. in action.

  1201. They may be

  1202. smart people.

  1203. They may be

  1204. doing a lot of

  1205. good things for

  1206. the company or

  1207. for themselves,

  1208. but if the

  1209. climate, the

  1210. environment is

  1211. one of a

  1212. lack of order,

  1213. a lack of

  1214. unity,

  1215. lack of

  1216. character,

  1217. something's

  1218. wrong.

  1219. And James

  1220. would tell us

  1221. there may be

  1222. many things

  1223. wrong, but

  1224. one of the

  1225. problems is

  1226. people who are

  1227. actually exerting

  1228. the most

  1229. influence,

  1230. they're not

  1231. using

  1232. godly wisdom.

  1233. And if that's

  1234. the case,

  1235. where you are

  1236. in that

  1237. environment,

  1238. something needs

  1239. to change.

  1240. Now, if you're

  1241. the leader,

  1242. the place to

  1243. begin is with

  1244. you.

  1245. What you need

  1246. to do is

  1247. confess to

  1248. God that

  1249. you've just

  1250. left Him out

  1251. of the whole

  1252. process.

  1253. You've been

  1254. exercising your

  1255. best effort

  1256. with your

  1257. human wisdom,

  1258. you've not

  1259. been seeking

  1260. His help.

  1261. His will.

  1262. You've not

  1263. been looking

  1264. to His

  1265. word.

  1266. And you

  1267. need to

  1268. confess that,

  1269. repent of it,

  1270. and ask God

  1271. to give you

  1272. wisdom, which

  1273. James in

  1274. chapter 1,

  1275. verse 5 says

  1276. God's ready,

  1277. willing, and

  1278. able to give

  1279. it to all who

  1280. ask Him in

  1281. faith.

  1282. Now, if you're

  1283. not the leader

  1284. in that

  1285. environment,

  1286. you need to

  1287. pray and ask

  1288. God to work

  1289. in your

  1290. situation to

  1291. somehow raise

  1292. up people who

  1293. will exert

  1294. godly wisdom

  1295. and pray that

  1296. somehow or

  1297. another God

  1298. will turn

  1299. things around.

  1300. Don't give

  1301. up.

  1302. James wants us

  1303. to understand

  1304. it's dangerous

  1305. to live in this

  1306. world and just

  1307. try to do the

  1308. best we can.

  1309. just do the

  1310. best we can

  1311. in the way

  1312. that we think,

  1313. things that we

  1314. read, things

  1315. that we feel,

  1316. go by our gut.

  1317. James is saying

  1318. it's not wise.

  1319. That's worldly

  1320. wisdom.

  1321. That's human

  1322. wisdom.

  1323. That's earthly

  1324. wisdom.

  1325. Specifically, he

  1326. says, that will

  1327. not work in the

  1328. church.

  1329. That cannot be the

  1330. mentality of

  1331. leaders, teachers,

  1332. or church

  1333. members.

  1334. It'll lead to

  1335. all kinds of

  1336. disunity and

  1337. problems.

  1338. God will not

  1339. bless.

  1340. But we need to

  1341. understand it

  1342. doesn't work

  1343. anywhere.

  1344. If you have any

  1345. doubts, just look

  1346. around.

  1347. It is not an

  1348. exaggeration to

  1349. say that most

  1350. homes,

  1351. communities,

  1352. governments,

  1353. and organizations

  1354. are not

  1355. characterized by

  1356. the things

  1357. James says

  1358. will happen

  1359. when there's

  1360. earthly wisdom,

  1361. when there's

  1362. godly wisdom

  1363. being exercised.

  1364. Things like

  1365. humility, peace,

  1366. purity, and

  1367. other qualities.

  1368. We're going to

  1369. look at that in

  1370. detail next week.

  1371. There's just too

  1372. much evidence

  1373. around about us,

  1374. in our

  1375. neighborhoods,

  1376. in our various

  1377. organizations,

  1378. of bitter

  1379. jealousy,

  1380. selfish ambition,

  1381. of selfish

  1382. ambition,

  1383. disorder,

  1384. and all kinds

  1385. of evil

  1386. practices.

  1387. That's why we,

  1388. not other

  1389. people, but

  1390. why we as

  1391. God's people,

  1392. we've got to

  1393. stop trying to

  1394. just do our

  1395. best and rely

  1396. on our own

  1397. good,

  1398. worldly,

  1399. human wisdom.

  1400. It won't work

  1401. because we are

  1402. leaving out the

  1403. true source of

  1404. wisdom, the

  1405. Lord Jesus

  1406. Christ.

  1407. We're leaving

  1408. out God and

  1409. His will.

  1410. No matter what

  1411. you do,

  1412. no matter where

  1413. you live,

  1414. who you live

  1415. with,

  1416. you need

  1417. God's wisdom.

  1418. And in the

  1419. weeks to come,

  1420. as we finish up

  1421. here in James

  1422. and move into

  1423. the book of

  1424. Proverbs,

  1425. we're going to

  1426. look at how

  1427. to acquire

  1428. godly wisdom.

  1429. We're going to

  1430. look at more

  1431. detail about what

  1432. it looks like,

  1433. how it will

  1434. benefit us and

  1435. other people.

  1436. But right now,

  1437. understand this,

  1438. godly wisdom

  1439. comes from living

  1440. in close

  1441. fellowship with

  1442. Him.

  1443. and learning

  1444. to look at

  1445. all of life

  1446. through the

  1447. lens of

  1448. Scripture.

  1449. That includes

  1450. the way you

  1451. live at home

  1452. with your

  1453. husband, your

  1454. wife, your

  1455. children, your

  1456. parents.

  1457. It means the

  1458. way you do

  1459. your job, the

  1460. attitude you

  1461. have, the

  1462. way you do

  1463. whatever you

  1464. do.

  1465. Are you a

  1466. wise person?

  1467. Don't tell

  1468. me.

  1469. Don't answer

  1470. with words.

  1471. Just look at

  1472. your life and

  1473. your influence.

  1474. That's where

  1475. you'll see if

  1476. you mainly

  1477. function according

  1478. to earthly

  1479. wisdom or

  1480. God's wisdom.

  1481. Let's pray.

  1482. Father,

  1483. Father, you've

  1484. made it clear

  1485. the contrast

  1486. between earthly

  1487. human wisdom,

  1488. our best

  1489. efforts,

  1490. and your

  1491. true,

  1492. life-changing,

  1493. purifying,

  1494. peaceful

  1495. wisdom.

  1496. help us, dear

  1497. God, to see

  1498. how we should

  1499. respond to you

  1500. this morning.

  1501. Help us to

  1502. desire and to

  1503. seek your

  1504. wisdom, to

  1505. know how we

  1506. should fulfill

  1507. all of our

  1508. responsibilities in

  1509. this world.

  1510. world.

  1511. In an attitude of

  1512. prayer, you

  1513. listen to the

  1514. Lord and you

  1515. respond to

  1516. him.

  1517. This is

  1518. something that

  1519. will make a

  1520. difference in

  1521. your life and

  1522. the life of

  1523. people around

  1524. you, living

  1525. according to

  1526. God's wisdom

  1527. and refusing to

  1528. just do what

  1529. comes natural,

  1530. live by human

  1531. wisdom.

  1532. So listen to the

  1533. Lord and respond to

  1534. him.

  1535. Let's pray

  1536. together.

  1537. If I can pray

  1538. with you, I'll be

  1539. here at the

  1540. front.
