  1. Bible's most well-known book of wisdom, Proverbs.

  2. Let me ask you, how do you read it and interpret it?

  3. For that matter, how do you read and interpret any Old Testament book?

  4. Do you read it the same way as an Orthodox Jew would read it today?

  5. You know, a faithful Jewish person believes that the Old Testament is the Word of God.

  6. But they do not believe that Jesus is the Old Testament's promised Messiah.

  7. They do not believe that the New Testament is the authoritative Word of God.

  8. An Orthodox Jew would read the book of Proverbs to learn lessons on how to live wisely.

  9. How to live a morally good life.

  10. But he or she would not consider how Jesus Christ fits into Proverbs.

  11. Nor would they turn to the New Testament and allow God's Word there shed light on understanding Proverbs.

  12. They wouldn't do that with any Old Testament book.

  13. I want us to understand this morning.

  14. I want us to be real, very clear.

  15. We as Christians must not read Proverbs or any book of the Old Testament as if Jesus had never come.

  16. As if He had never come into this world.

  17. As if He has not come into this world and taught and died on the cross for our sins.

  18. And risen and ascended back into heaven.

  19. And sent His Holy Spirit.

  20. And gave us a fuller explanation of who God is and what God's doing in this world through the New Testament.

  21. In the life and ministry of Jesus.

  22. God reveals Himself and His plan.

  23. His plan of salvation.

  24. His plan for what He's doing in this world period.

  25. He reveals it more clearly and more completely than He did in the Old Testament.

  26. And the Bible explains that.

  27. Look on the screen at Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  28. The first three verses.

  29. It says,

  30. In the past, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways.

  31. Now that writer is explaining how God has spoken through the Old Testament.

  32. But in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son.

  33. Whom He appointed heir of all things.

  34. And through whom also He made the universe.

  35. The Son is the radiance of God's glory.

  36. And the exact representation of His being.

  37. Sustaining all things by His powerful Word.

  38. The book of Hebrews is a great place to look, to study.

  39. To understand the Old Testament as we should understand it today.

  40. For an example, in the book of Hebrews, you'll find that the Old Testament sacrifices,

  41. the temple, the priesthood, things like this.

  42. They were signs that pointed to Jesus Christ.

  43. They pointed way into the future.

  44. To the coming of Jesus.

  45. And who He was and what He would do.

  46. Hebrews describes these things in the Old Testament as being like shadows.

  47. But the reality is found in Jesus Christ.

  48. Now that Jesus has come.

  49. He's completed His work of providing salvation.

  50. Those signs from the Old Testament are no longer needed.

  51. They have served their purpose.

  52. They now are still the Word of God.

  53. But what they pointed to has come in Jesus.

  54. For an example,

  55. why don't we ever go,

  56. why don't we think we have to go to Jerusalem and worship in the temple?

  57. Why don't we continue to offer animal sacrifices

  58. and observe those dietary laws and rituals that we learn about,

  59. for example, in the book of Leviticus?

  60. The reason being,

  61. those shadows have been replaced by the reality of what God has done in Jesus.

  62. In who He is and in what He did when He came into this world.

  63. Understanding this will help us to see why we must read the Old Testament

  64. in light of God's more complete revelation detailed in the New Testament.

  65. That means we must not leave Jesus out of our study of the Old Testament,

  66. including the book of Proverbs.

  67. You know, Jesus made it clear to both His own disciples and to His enemies

  68. that the Old Testament reveals me.

  69. Jesus told them,

  70. I'm there.

  71. You just haven't read it.

  72. You just haven't understood it.

  73. Let me give you two examples.

  74. Jesus actually condemned His opponents.

  75. Those Jewish leaders who were always trying to trap Him,

  76. out to get Him.

  77. He condemned them for not believing what the Old Testament taught about Him.

  78. Look in John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  79. Jesus said,

  80. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life.

  81. And it is they that bear witness about me.

  82. Jesus was chastising them,

  83. condemning them,

  84. because they failed to see Him in the Old Testament.

  85. Going on in Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  86. following His resurrection,

  87. Jesus rebuked two of His own disciples

  88. for their failure to see Him in their Scriptures,

  89. which was the Old Testament.

  90. Look at it.

  91. And He said to them,

  92. O foolish ones,

  93. and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.

  94. Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things

  95. and enter into His glory?

  96. And beginning with Moses and all the prophets,

  97. He interpreted to them in all the Scriptures,

  98. I underline that and put it in bold on the screen,

  99. the things concerning Himself.

  100. As we study Proverbs,

  101. it's important that we open that book

  102. and read it, study it, interpret it,

  103. just like any other book of the Bible that we open.

  104. As we read in Proverbs in the weeks to come,

  105. and I don't think I said it in case you're here for the first time,

  106. we're in a study called Becoming Wise.

  107. We're going to be focusing primarily on the book of Proverbs.

  108. As we open these pages in the book of Proverbs,

  109. we're going to be looking at the meaning of words.

  110. We're going to think about the day in which they were written,

  111. their context that way.

  112. We're going to look at the context,

  113. where they're found,

  114. the Scriptures before them and after them.

  115. But we're also going to look at the big context of the Bible.

  116. The book of Proverbs does not exist in isolation.

  117. The book of Proverbs is a part of the Old and New Testament together,

  118. our Bible.

  119. That means we need to read Proverbs in light of

  120. the person and work of Jesus Christ

  121. as explained in the New Testament.

  122. That's the goal of today's message.

  123. I want us to see how we as Christians

  124. should study Proverbs

  125. in light of God's fuller revelation of Himself

  126. and His plan in Jesus

  127. and in the New Testament witness to Jesus.

  128. I'm going to use some material from a man

  129. by the name of Anthony Salvaggio.

  130. Anthony Salvaggio.

  131. He is a pastor and theologian from New York.

  132. And he has written a little commentary,

  133. not real long,

  134. on the book of Proverbs.

  135. And he pointed out some things about how

  136. Jesus fits into Proverbs

  137. and explained it so well

  138. that I want to share some of it.

  139. I'm adapting it some.

  140. If you've got his book,

  141. you may say,

  142. well, you misrepresented him.

  143. So I'm not going to say,

  144. I'm saying everything he said.

  145. But I am using his material a good bit.

  146. It's a good little study,

  147. what I've read of it,

  148. but this part especially.

  149. If you're interested in further study,

  150. pick it up.

  151. In our first study of Proverbs two weeks ago,

  152. we began in chapter 1, verses 1 through 6.

  153. And we found that the purpose of this book,

  154. the book of Proverbs,

  155. is to make us wise.

  156. We saw in that message

  157. that while Proverbs will certainly teach us

  158. much about wisdom,

  159. and we need it, don't we?

  160. The greatest source of wisdom

  161. is found in Jesus Christ.

  162. And Jesus makes that very clear

  163. in the New Testament.

  164. And we read it last week,

  165. but let me refresh your memory.

  166. Actually, two weeks ago.

  167. Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  168. Jesus said this,

  169. The queen of the south

  170. will arise at the judgment

  171. and with this generation

  172. and condemn it.

  173. For she came from the ends of the earth

  174. to listen to Solomon's wisdom,

  175. and now one greater than Solomon

  176. is here.

  177. Proverbs begins.

  178. These are the Proverbs.

  179. These are the sayings,

  180. the teachings of Solomon.

  181. They're not all from Solomon,

  182. as we saw two weeks ago.

  183. But the book of Proverbs,

  184. we normally associate

  185. the wisdom of Solomon,

  186. the wisest man who ever lived.

  187. And Jesus says,

  188. in himself,

  189. well, look at me.

  190. One greater than Solomon,

  191. one wiser than Solomon,

  192. is here before you.

  193. That's why we need to listen to Jesus

  194. as we study wisdom

  195. wherever in the Bible.

  196. Let's look in more detail now

  197. at what Jesus

  198. and how Jesus

  199. will teach us wisdom.

  200. First,

  201. Jesus taught

  202. that the entire Old Testament

  203. points to him.

  204. Jesus himself taught,

  205. you cannot have a full understanding

  206. of the Old Testament

  207. if you leave me out.

  208. Look at what he said.

  209. I want to read one verse.

  210. It's the same as several verses

  211. we saw a minute ago

  212. or from several verses.

  213. Luke 24, 27.

  214. And beginning with Moses

  215. and all the prophets,

  216. he interpreted to them

  217. and all the scriptures

  218. the things concerning himself.

  219. But then Jesus went on

  220. in that same chapter 24 of Luke

  221. to say this.

  222. It's on the screen.

  223. Then he said to them,

  224. these are my words

  225. that I spoke to you

  226. while I was still with you

  227. that everything written about me

  228. in the law of Moses

  229. and the prophets

  230. and the Psalms

  231. must be fulfilled.

  232. That was his way

  233. of describing

  234. the whole Old Testament.

  235. Then he opened their minds

  236. to understand the scripture.

  237. Understand the scriptures.

  238. That's verse 45 there.

  239. I want you to think about that.

  240. Jesus opened their minds

  241. to understand the scriptures.

  242. Do you know that

  243. while we should,

  244. we must read the Bible

  245. for ourselves.

  246. I mean,

  247. God expects you.

  248. God will never give you knowledge

  249. just out of the blue.

  250. He's not going to just zap you

  251. and make you wise

  252. about the things of God.

  253. God expects us

  254. to open the Bible,

  255. to read it,

  256. to study it,

  257. to think about it.

  258. Just let it sink in.

  259. Try to understand it.

  260. Try to figure it out.

  261. But the only way

  262. that we're ever really going

  263. to understand

  264. what God is saying

  265. and how it applies

  266. to our lives

  267. is if God enables us.

  268. And God will enable us

  269. if we're Christians

  270. through his Holy Spirit

  271. who lives within us.

  272. That's what Jesus was telling

  273. his disciples there

  274. about himself.

  275. The English Standard Version,

  276. ESV Study Bible,

  277. has a good note

  278. on verse 45.

  279. Look at it.

  280. They say,

  281. true understanding

  282. of the Scriptures

  283. so that one understands

  284. how all of redemptive history

  285. fits together

  286. is a gift of God.

  287. God has to be the one

  288. to sort of turn the light on

  289. for us to understand

  290. his Word

  291. and to understand

  292. how the New Testament

  293. completes,

  294. fulfills

  295. that which is taught

  296. in the Old Testament.

  297. Let's look now

  298. more specifically

  299. at why we cannot

  300. exclude Jesus

  301. from our study

  302. of wisdom

  303. in Proverbs.

  304. Number two,

  305. Jesus demonstrated wisdom

  306. throughout his earthly life.

  307. I want you to really

  308. pay attention here.

  309. I want you to note

  310. with me

  311. how from childhood,

  312. from childhood,

  313. Jesus Christ

  314. was wise.

  315. He demonstrated it.

  316. He grew in wisdom

  317. as the God-man

  318. that He was.

  319. Jesus revealed wisdom,

  320. His wisdom,

  321. at the beginning

  322. of His life.

  323. Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2:40

  324. verse 40.

  325. The very first description

  326. of Jesus as a child

  327. says this,

  328. and the child grew

  329. and became strong,

  330. filled with wisdom.

  331. The only things

  332. that we know about

  333. Jesus as an infant,

  334. as a little child,

  335. Matthew 1

  336. and Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  337. Luke is telling us here,

  338. after he's told us

  339. about the birth of Jesus,

  340. Luke is doing

  341. sort of a summary statement here.

  342. Jesus still,

  343. this little child,

  344. how He grew,

  345. became strong,

  346. and even then

  347. filled with wisdom.

  348. The next thing Luke tells us

  349. is the only information

  350. we have

  351. from Jesus

  352. as a little child

  353. until He was 30 years old.

  354. That's a big gap,

  355. isn't it?

  356. Jesus as a little child

  357. and then He's 30 years old.

  358. What happened?

  359. Well, we don't know.

  360. And I want to encourage you,

  361. don't waste your money

  362. and time reading a book

  363. that fills in the story

  364. for you

  365. as to what Jesus did,

  366. what was going on

  367. between His childhood

  368. and adulthood.

  369. Nobody knows.

  370. We're not intended to know

  371. because it's not

  372. in God's Word.

  373. But there's one incident.

  374. One thing did happen

  375. that the Scripture tells us about

  376. when Jesus was 12 years old.

  377. He went to the temple.

  378. He sat with the Jewish teachers.

  379. He sat with the scholars of His day.

  380. And He listened to them teach.

  381. He understood what they were talking about.

  382. He asked questions.

  383. And just by, I guess,

  384. the way He sat there,

  385. the way He listened,

  386. and the questions that He asked,

  387. they were just blown away.

  388. They were just so impressed

  389. with the 12-year-old Jesus.

  390. And this is how Luke describes Him.

  391. Luke chapter 2, verse 47.

    Luke 2:47

  392. And all who heard Him

  393. were amazed at His understanding

  394. and His answers.

  395. Smart people.

  396. Jewish scholarly types,

  397. as well as the common people.

  398. all were amazed

  399. at His understanding

  400. and His answers.

  401. Not questions here.

  402. And His answers.

  403. Now Luke goes on

  404. in this same chapter

  405. to conclude this account

  406. of Jesus' early life like this.

  407. Luke 2, 52.

  408. And Jesus increased in wisdom

  409. and in stature

  410. and in favor

  411. with God and man.

  412. man.

  413. Jesus is described

  414. as being wise

  415. as we see Him.

  416. He demonstrates it

  417. as a 12-year-old.

  418. He's described here

  419. as one who was wise

  420. and grew in wisdom

  421. as He grew into adulthood.

  422. Now Jesus also revealed

  423. His wisdom

  424. throughout His public

  425. teaching ministry.

  426. There's many examples

  427. we could turn to.

  428. Jesus' wisdom

  429. was evident

  430. in the way He taught,

  431. the content of His teaching.

  432. Here's an example

  433. from Mark chapter 6

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  434. and verse 2.

  435. It says,

  436. And on the Sabbath,

  437. He began to teach

  438. in the synagogue.

  439. And many who heard Him

  440. were astonished,

  441. saying,

  442. Where did this man

  443. get these things?

  444. What is the wisdom

  445. given to Him?

  446. See,

  447. when Jesus came on the scene,

  448. He was unknown.

  449. Or the ones who knew Him,

  450. they knew His parents.

  451. He was not

  452. a well-trained,

  453. formerly trained rabbi.

  454. But they were blown away

  455. with what Jesus taught,

  456. the content of His teaching,

  457. the wisdom

  458. that He displayed.

  459. And then Jesus' wisdom

  460. is also seen

  461. in one of His primary

  462. teaching methods,

  463. the parable.

  464. If you know anything

  465. about the teaching of Jesus,

  466. if you know anything

  467. about Matthew, Mark,

  468. and Luke especially,

  469. Jesus taught many things

  470. about the kingdom of God,

  471. about life,

  472. by telling little stories,

  473. parables.

  474. Now, the Greek word

  475. translated parable

  476. in the New Testament

  477. comes from the Hebrew word

  478. for proverbs

  479. in the Old Testament.

  480. So Jesus taught,

  481. we can say,

  482. by using proverbs.

  483. Just like we see

  484. in the book of Proverbs,

  485. except He demonstrated

  486. and He taught

  487. greater wisdom.

  488. Jesus demonstrated wisdom

  489. throughout His life.

  490. It was an obvious characteristic

  491. that He possessed.

  492. It's who He was.

  493. And it came out

  494. in the things that He did

  495. and the things that He taught.

  496. Jesus is the perfect

  497. proverbs man,

  498. a man of wisdom.

  499. But wisdom is not just evident

  500. in the earthly life

  501. and teaching of Jesus.

  502. Number three,

  503. Jesus embodies wisdom.

  504. This is more,

  505. this is a more difficult concept

  506. to understand,

  507. to grasp hold of,

  508. but the Scripture teaches it.

  509. And so bear with me here.

  510. Let's look,

  511. let's think about this

  512. real carefully.

  513. The Apostle Paul

  514. describes Jesus

  515. this way

  516. in 1 Corinthians 1,

    1 Corinthians 1:30

  517. verse 30.

  518. By the way,

  519. Paul describes Jesus

  520. as being the wisdom of God

  521. in various ways

  522. in 1 Corinthians 1

  523. and 2.

  524. But look at this.

  525. Paul writes in,

  526. because of Him,

  527. God,

  528. because of Him,

  529. he's talking about God

  530. in the previous verse.

  531. Because of Him,

  532. because of God,

  533. you are in Christ Jesus

  534. who became to us

  535. wisdom from God.

  536. Jesus is a gift of wisdom.

  537. He embodies it.

  538. Look at what Paul said

  539. in Colossians 2.

  540. He says,

  541. My goal

  542. is that they may be

  543. encouraged in heart

  544. and united in love

  545. so that they may have

  546. the full riches

  547. of complete understanding

  548. in order that they may know

  549. the mystery of God,

  550. namely Christ,

  551. in whom are hidden

  552. all the treasures

  553. of wisdom

  554. and knowledge.

  555. Paul,

  556. in writing

  557. the letter

  558. to the Colossians,

  559. makes much

  560. of the glory

  561. of Jesus Christ.

  562. I mean,

  563. he just points out

  564. the supremacy

  565. of Jesus Christ

  566. in creation.

  567. And a part of what

  568. he's talking about here,

  569. look at it there.

  570. It's still on the screen.

  571. Look at it.

  572. The mystery of God,

  573. namely Christ,

  574. in whom are hidden

  575. all the treasures

  576. of wisdom

  577. and knowledge.

  578. Old Testament scholar,

  579. Tremper Longden,

  580. says that Paul

  581. is teaching us

  582. that Jesus

  583. is the very

  584. incarnation

  585. of wisdom.

  586. That means

  587. he personifies

  588. wisdom.

  589. He embodies

  590. wisdom.

  591. It might help us

  592. to think

  593. along this line.

  594. If you want to see

  595. one of the greatest

  596. demonstrations

  597. or displays

  598. of wisdom

  599. in print,

  600. read the book

  601. of Proverbs.

  602. I mean,

  603. if you really want

  604. to study

  605. a body of material,

  606. you can read it.

  607. Something that's

  608. in print.

  609. Great wisdom.

  610. Then you'd read

  611. the book of Proverbs.

  612. But,

  613. if you want

  614. to see

  615. the greatest

  616. display

  617. of the wisdom

  618. of God

  619. in human form,

  620. look at Jesus.

  621. Jesus,

  622. he modeled it.

  623. He personified it

  624. in just

  625. who he was,

  626. what he taught,

  627. how he taught.

  628. Let's look at

  629. one more reason

  630. for not leaving

  631. Jesus out of our

  632. study of Proverbs.

  633. Jesus is the

  634. ultimate wisdom

  635. God calls us

  636. to choose

  637. to follow

  638. in life.

  639. Jesus is the

  640. ultimate wisdom

  641. that God

  642. calls us

  643. to make

  644. the choice,

  645. make the decision

  646. to follow

  647. in life.

  648. Throughout the

  649. book of Proverbs,

  650. we're going to be

  651. called to choose

  652. the way of wisdom

  653. instead of the

  654. way of foolishness.

  655. Throughout the

  656. book of Proverbs,

  657. the writer's

  658. going to say,

  659. if you want to

  660. live a way

  661. that's wise,

  662. that'll be to

  663. your advantage,

  664. a way that

  665. will make you

  666. or enable you

  667. to live just

  668. the best possible

  669. life,

  670. then you live

  671. this way.

  672. Or you can

  673. live this foolish

  674. way.

  675. It's up to you.

  676. The paths

  677. are laid out

  678. for us.

  679. If you live

  680. this way,

  681. it'll result

  682. in you being

  683. wise,

  684. and it'll be

  685. the best way

  686. you can live.

  687. If you live

  688. this way,

  689. it's a fool's

  690. way,

  691. and it can

  692. kill you,

  693. but it will

  694. certainly hurt

  695. you even

  696. if you live.

  697. Well,

  698. in a similar

  699. way,

  700. we're called

  701. in the New

  702. Testament to

  703. choose the way

  704. of God

  705. instead of

  706. the way

  707. of the world.

  708. The Apostle

  709. Paul explains

  710. it in terms

  711. of choosing

  712. the secret

  713. wisdom of

  714. God,

  715. now revealed

  716. in Jesus,

  717. instead of

  718. the foolishness

  719. offered by

  720. the world.

  721. Look with me

  722. if you would,

  723. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  724. chapter 2.

  725. But we

  726. impart a secret

  727. and hidden

  728. wisdom of

  729. God,

  730. which God

  731. decreed before

  732. the ages

  733. for our

  734. glory.

  735. None of the

  736. rulers of

  737. this age

  738. understood

  739. this,

  740. for if they

  741. had,

  742. they would

  743. not have

  744. crucified the

  745. Lord of

  746. glory.

  747. You know

  748. what that

  749. secret wisdom,

  750. secret knowledge

  751. is that he's

  752. writing about?

  753. It's about

  754. Jesus,

  755. the Son of

  756. God,

  757. the Messiah,

  758. coming into

  759. this world,

  760. but not like in

  761. the Old Testament

  762. they thought he

  763. would,

  764. not like the

  765. Jews thought he

  766. would.

  767. They thought and

  768. hoped he would

  769. come in as a

  770. political leader,

  771. as a military

  772. leader.

  773. In the first

  774. century, the

  775. Jews had this

  776. hope that the

  777. Messiah, when he

  778. comes, he's going

  779. to destroy the

  780. Romans.

  781. He's going to

  782. set us free from

  783. Roman rule.

  784. He's going to

  785. set up a new

  786. earthly Jewish

  787. kingdom, like we

  788. enjoyed under

  789. David and under

  790. Solomon.

  791. But God's plan

  792. was to send his

  793. son, the Messiah,

  794. to save the

  795. world a different

  796. way.

  797. God's plan was to

  798. send Jesus into

  799. the world to die

  800. on the cross, to

  801. pay the penalty for

  802. our sins, so that

  803. through faith in

  804. him, all people

  805. could be liberated

  806. from sin.

  807. All people could

  808. be saved from

  809. death and hell.

  810. All people could

  811. be free, truly,

  812. spiritually, and

  813. eventually, physically,

  814. in a new heaven and

  815. a new earth, eternal

  816. life.

  817. That was the great

  818. mystery.

  819. God was going to

  820. unite all people in

  821. Christ, the suffering

  822. servant of God

  823. through his death

  824. on the cross.

  825. Old Testament

  826. scholars Raymond

  827. Dillard and

  828. Trimter Longman

  829. describe this

  830. connection between

  831. Proverbs and Jesus

  832. like this.

  833. Look at it.

  834. Thus, as Christians

  835. read the book of

  836. Proverbs in the

  837. light of continued

  838. revelation of the

  839. New Testament, they

  840. are confronted with

  841. the same questions as

  842. the ancient Israelites,

  843. but with a different

  844. nuance.

  845. Will we dine with

  846. wisdom or with

  847. folly?

  848. Foolishness.

  849. The wisdom who

  850. beckons us is none

  851. other than Jesus

  852. Christ, while the

  853. folly that attempts

  854. to seduce us is any

  855. created thing that we

  856. put in the place of

  857. the Creator.

  858. If you want to be

  859. wise and live this

  860. way of wisdom, you

  861. will do it by

  862. following Jesus.

  863. What they're saying

  864. is the foolish way is

  865. just choose whatever

  866. else you want to

  867. choose.

  868. Anything other than

  869. Christ.

  870. You can choose to

  871. follow the crowd.

  872. You can choose to

  873. follow money.

  874. You can choose to

  875. follow popularity.

  876. You fill in the

  877. blank.

  878. But in the end, the

  879. way of following

  880. Jesus is the wise

  881. way.

  882. And everything else

  883. eventually will prove

  884. to be the foolish

  885. way.

  886. As we study the

  887. wisdom of Proverbs

  888. over the coming

  889. weeks, we're going

  890. to see what God is

  891. saying in that Old

  892. Testament book.

  893. Proverbs speaks to

  894. us today.

  895. It's relevant for

  896. our lives today.

  897. We're not just going

  898. to stop with what we

  899. see in that book as

  900. if Jesus has not

  901. come.

  902. God has given us an

  903. even greater source of

  904. wisdom that will help

  905. us to better understand

  906. and live according to

  907. the wisdom of

  908. Proverbs.

  909. The source of

  910. wisdom is the person

  911. and work of Jesus

  912. Christ as explained,

  913. as presented in the

  914. New Testament.

  915. Here's what I want us

  916. to understand.

  917. Jesus does more than

  918. just help us to

  919. understand what it

  920. means to be wise.

  921. Jesus can actually

  922. help us if we are

  923. His to live wisely

  924. through His

  925. indwelling Spirit.

  926. When a person

  927. becomes a Christian,

  928. the Holy Spirit,

  929. the Spirit of Christ,

  930. the Spirit of God

  931. comes to live within

  932. us.

  933. And He's the one who

  934. will enable us to

  935. put into practice the

  936. teachings that we

  937. learn, the truth that

  938. we learn about wisdom

  939. in the book of

  940. Proverbs.

  941. If we seek to live

  942. wisely as Proverbs

  943. teaches and the Holy

  944. Spirit enables us,

  945. we will be living more

  946. and more like Jesus.

  947. We will be conforming

  948. more and more to His

  949. likeness, developing His

  950. character, which is

  951. God's goal for us, as

  952. you well know, as we've

  953. studied on other

  954. occasions.

  955. But before we can ever

  956. really live like Jesus,

  957. we've got to have a

  958. relationship with Him.

  959. And I want you to

  960. listen very carefully.

  961. We're about at the end

  962. because this is vitally

  963. important.

  964. Do you truly have a

  965. relationship with Jesus

  966. Christ?

  967. He is your Savior and

  968. Lord of your life.

  969. If you have such a

  970. relationship, you should

  971. be able to point or

  972. point out the way God

  973. has and is changing

  974. you and conforming you

  975. more and more to the

  976. likeness of His Son.

  977. In other words, helping

  978. you to develop Christ-like

  979. character.

  980. Lisa and I went to fall

  981. for Greenville Friday

  982. night.

  983. Ate a lot of junk food,

  984. things that, you know,

  985. not good and healthy for

  986. you, but we enjoyed it.

  987. Well, in that sea of

  988. people, we came to one

  989. spot and there were some

  990. individuals there who were

  991. passing out tracts,

  992. religious tracts.

  993. And one person handed one

  994. to Lisa.

  995. He didn't hand one to me.

  996. And I just thought, he must

  997. think Lisa needs it more

  998. than I do.

  999. The little tract said,

  1000. are you born again?

1001. Lisa brought it home and I

1002. looked at it when we got

  1003. home.

1004. It was an excellent tract.

1005. It asked the question, are

  1006. you born again?

1007. And as you opened it up, it

1008. explained from the book of

  1009. 1 John how a Christian will

  1010. live.

  1011. Very biblically sound.

1012. If we're Christians, we will

  1013. live a certain way.

1014. It will be evident in our

1015. lives that God has put his

  1016. spirit in us.

  1017. We'll have a desire to love

1018. God, to do his will, to obey

  1019. his word.

  1020. We'll have a desire to love

  1021. one another.

1022. The book of 1 John tells us

1023. it's written to give Christians

1024. assurance of their salvation and

1025. it explains what really will

1026. happen, how a Christian will

1027. think, how a Christian will

1028. feel, how a Christian will

1029. want to live in this world.

1030. Salvation is by the grace of

1031. God through faith in Jesus.

  1032. But saving faith is

  1033. continuing faith.

1034. Saving faith is not invisible.

1035. James tells us, as we've said

1036. it on Sunday morning even, not

  1037. too long ago.

  1038. Saving faith is life-altering

  1039. faith.

1040. If we truly are believers in

1041. Jesus Christ, it'll be evident

1042. in the way that we live our

1043. lives in our home, where we work,

1044. where you go to school, wherever

  1045. you are.

1046. Is such faith, saving faith, life-altering

1047. faith evident in your life?

1048. It really does not matter if you

1049. claim to be a Christian.

  1050. I'm a Christian because I prayed a

  1051. certain prayer.

1052. You won't ever find anything in the

1053. Bible that tries to offer you any

1054. assurance based on you praying a

  1055. prayer.

1056. Or because you walked down an aisle

1057. in a church and spoke to some

  1058. pastor.

1059. Or even because you were baptized.

1060. Saving faith will be evident in

1061. your life by the way that you live,

1062. by the way you seek to know and

1063. love and serve God, please Him by

1064. doing His will, love other people and

  1065. serve other people truly.

1066. Is saving faith evident in your life?

1067. If it is, thank God because it

1068. itself is a gift from God.

1069. Continue to cooperate with Him and

1070. to obey Him and live for His glory.

1071. Live according to the leadership of

  1072. His Spirit.

1073. You have to have that.

1074. But saving faith is really not

  1075. evident in your life.

1076. But you want to be right with God

  1077. today.

1078. You want to have a real relationship

  1079. with Jesus Christ.

1080. I want you to understand that can

  1081. happen right now.

1082. If you'll admit to God that you are

1083. a sinner, that you are guilty of sin

1084. against Him and truly repent.

1085. That means change your mind about it.

  1086. Turn away from it.

  1087. Hate it.

1088. And ask God to deliver you from it.

1089. And as you turn from your sin, you

  1090. turn to Jesus Christ.

1091. In faith and trust, you're confident

1092. that when He died on the cross, He

1093. actually died for you to pay the

  1094. penalty for your sins.

1095. And if you'll truly call upon Him to

1096. save you as you turn from your sin,

  1097. He will.

1098. The Bible says that whoever will call

1099. upon the name of the Lord will be

  1100. saved.

1101. God will save you now if you will

  1102. humbly, sincerely, wholeheartedly

1103. turn from your sin, put your trust in

1104. Jesus and surrender control of your

  1105. life to Him.

1106. He's got to be Lord of all.

1107. Or as that little cliche says, He will

1108. not be Lord at all.

1109. The wisdom of God certainly is revealed

1110. throughout the Bible, especially in the

  1111. book of Proverbs.

1112. God is the most powerful

1113. but most powerfully seen and experienced

1114. in the person of Jesus Christ.

1115. Make sure you have a relationship with

1116. Him if you truly want to be wise and have a

1117. relationship with God now and forever.

  1118. Let's pray together.

1119. Father, show each person in this room how

1120. they should respond to you and your word

  1121. this morning.

1122. Lord, especially make it clear

1123. that salvation is by your grace.

  1124. It's undeserved.

1125. It is through faith in Jesus Christ.

1126. But help everyone here to understand that

  1127. saving faith,

  1128. it continues.

1129. It is evident by the way that we live.

1130. Help everyone here to understand that

1131. if you have saved them, your spirit's in

1132. them and they will know it.

1133. They will know it by looking at their life.

1134. Other people will know it.

1135. Help them to ask questions if they need to.

1136. But right now, dear God, make it clear

1137. how we all should respond to you and to Jesus.

1138. In an attitude of prayer, you respond to the Lord.

1139. If I could help you, pray with you,

1140. talk with you right now, I'll be happy to hear

  1141. it at the front.

1142. But the important thing is you respond to the Lord

1143. as He speaks to you right now.

  1144. Let's do that.
