  1. When you walk into a worship service like this,

  2. and you see that the Lord's Supper is going to be observed,

  3. what do you think?

  4. When I was a kid growing up in the church I went to,

  5. when I walked in and saw the table set up,

  6. we were going to have the Lord's Supper,

  7. I thought, we're going to get out today a whole lot early.

  8. Really.

  9. We started at 11 o'clock,

  10. and we had the Lord's Supper in the church I grew up in.

  11. We were always out by 20 minutes till 11,

  12. 20 minutes till 12.

  13. 30 to 40 minutes tops.

  14. That's not going to happen here.

  15. Don't even think about that.

  16. But on a more serious note,

  17. when you walk in,

  18. when you walked in today,

  19. or when you walk in anytime,

  20. and you see the elements on the table,

  21. you know we're going to observe the Lord's Supper.

  22. Maybe you saw it in the newsletter.

  23. What do you think?

  24. Do you think about what these elements represent?

  25. The broken body and shed blood of Jesus Christ

  26. as He died on the cross

  27. to pay the penalty for your sins

  28. if you're a Christian.

  29. Another way to think about that is

  30. when you see the Lord's Supper set up like this,

  31. do you think about the gospel?

  32. That is a word that's used a lot in church.

  33. You've probably heard it in Sunday school today.

  34. You may have read something this past week,

  35. that word gospel,

  36. in relation to who we are as Christians.

  37. Well, the word gospel simply means good news.

  38. It is the good news of how God

  39. has provided a way for sinners like you and me

  40. to be forgiven,

  41. made right with Him,

  42. and even made His child

  43. so that we can have a relationship with Him

  44. now and forever.

  45. I want you to turn with me

  46. to 1 Corinthians chapter 15 this morning

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  47. and we're going to look at one of the

  48. clearest,

  49. one of the most

  50. simple statements of the gospel

  51. that you'll find in Scripture.

  52. In fact,

  53. it's really the most

  54. clear, concise statement

  55. of the gospel message

  56. that you're going to find.

  57. 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  58. Now, most of this chapter

  59. is explaining the significance

  60. of the resurrection of Jesus.

  61. But Paul begins

  62. in verses 1 through 8.

  63. He begins

  64. by reminding

  65. the Corinthians,

  66. these Christians,

  67. what he has preached,

  68. what they have believed.

  69. He explains it in detail

  70. and then he talks about

  71. how there are

  72. so many eyewitnesses

  73. to the resurrection of Jesus.

  74. Let's look at it together.

  75. 1 Corinthians chapter 15,

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  76. beginning in verse 1.

  77. Now, I would remind you, brothers,

  78. of the gospel I preached to you,

  79. which you received,

  80. in which you stand,

  81. and by which you are being saved,

  82. if you hold fast

  83. to the word I preached to you,

  84. unless you believed in vain.

  85. For I delivered to you

  86. as of first importance

  87. what I also received,

  88. that Christ died for our sins

  89. in accordance with the Scriptures.

  90. Now, when he says that,

  91. he's referring to

  92. how the Old Testament

  93. foretold this was going to take place.

  94. Maybe he's thinking about

  95. Isaiah chapter 53 and 54,

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  96. where Isaiah's talking about

  97. the Lord's suffering servant,

  98. talking about really

  99. what Jesus experienced

  100. on the cross.

  101. That's the kind of thing

  102. he's referring to

  103. when he says,

  104. according to the Scriptures,

  105. according to the Old Testament prophecies.

  106. For Christ died for our sins

  107. in accordance with the Scriptures,

  108. that he was buried,

  109. that he was raised

  110. on the third day

  111. in accordance with the Scriptures,

  112. and that he appeared to Cephas,

  113. that's Peter,

  114. then to the twelve,

  115. then he appeared

  116. to more than 500 brothers

  117. at one time,

  118. most of whom are still alive,

  119. though some have fallen asleep.

  120. Then he appeared to James,

  121. then to all the apostles,

  122. last of all,

  123. as to one untimely born,

  124. he appeared also to me.

  125. I want us to answer

  126. three questions

  127. from this passage this morning

  128. that I pray will help us

  129. to prepare for the Lord's Supper.

  130. Number one,

  131. what is the gospel?

  132. What is the gospel?

  133. I would love to have

  134. the opportunity

  135. to pass out a sheet of paper

  136. and let everyone in this room

  137. write down

  138. your response

  139. to that question,

  140. your answer.

  141. What is the gospel?

  142. Every survey

  143. that is taken

  144. of church members

  145. indicates

  146. that most church members

  147. cannot give

  148. a simple,

  149. clear explanation

  150. of the gospel message.

  151. That is a shame.

  152. That should not be.

  153. And that's one of the reasons

  154. why we're looking

  155. at this passage

  156. this morning

  157. as we prepare

  158. for the Lord's Supper.

  159. we all need

  160. to understand

  161. to be able

  162. to explain

  163. the good news

  164. of Jesus.

  165. We ought to be able

  166. to explain

  167. what we believe

  168. and be able

  169. to communicate it

  170. to someone

  171. and encourage them

  172. to believe as well.

  173. What is the gospel?

  174. Well, Paul provides

  175. a concise summary

  176. in verses 3 and 4.

  177. I want you to look

  178. at three phrases.

  179. First,

  180. Christ died

  181. for our sins

  182. in verse 3.

  183. The death of Jesus

  184. on the cross

  185. is the heart

  186. of the gospel.

  187. The death of Jesus

  188. on the cross,

  189. that is the heart

  190. of the gospel.

  191. But note why he died.

  192. He died

  193. for our sins.

  194. Sin is everyone's

  195. biggest problem.

  196. You know,

  197. every one of us

  198. in this room,

  199. we've got problems.

  200. We've got issues.

  201. And it may be

  202. that you have

  203. some relational problems.

  204. It may be

  205. that you have

  206. some addiction

  207. type problems.

  208. The root

  209. of those problems

  210. is that it's sin.

  211. You're violating

  212. God's law.

  213. You're breaking

  214. His commandments.

  215. You're breaking

  216. His rules,

  217. boys and girls.

  218. That's our problem.

  219. And you know,

  220. we come into this world

  221. being able to do that

  222. just automatically,

  223. don't we?

  224. We're sinners by nature.

  225. No one ever had to teach you

  226. to tell a lie.

  227. No one ever had to teach you

  228. to talk back to your parent,

  229. to disobey your parent.

  230. We just come with this

  231. built-in bent

  232. on being selfish,

  233. being self-centered,

  234. certainly not God-centered.

  235. We're sinners by nature.

  236. We're sinners by choice.

  237. Our sin separates us

  238. from our relationship

  239. with God.

  240. And if we die

  241. in that condition,

  242. we'll be eternally separated

  243. from Him

  244. in hell.

  245. And that's the bad news

  246. of the Bible.

  247. Everyone needs to understand

  248. this bad news,

  249. how serious it is,

  250. so that we will understand

  251. just how great

  252. this good news is.

  253. And the good news is that

  254. even though we are sinners,

  255. sinners,

  256. and we're happy in it

  257. if we just go along in life

  258. and God leaves us alone,

  259. we'll be happy

  260. just doing what we want to do.

  261. But the good news of the Bible

  262. is God loves us,

  263. and God devised a way

  264. for us to be forgiven

  265. and made right with Him.

  266. He did this by sending

  267. His Son, Jesus Christ,

  268. into this world

  269. to die for our sins,

  270. to pay the penalty

  271. that our sins deserve.

  272. When Jesus hung on the cross,

  273. and understand,

  274. this is something supernatural.

  275. When Jesus hung on the cross,

  276. it's like God placed

  277. our sins upon Him.

  278. And there,

  279. He incurred God's wrath,

  280. His righteous wrath

  281. against sin.

  282. He suffered the punishment.

  283. I tell boys and girls

  284. when I explain the gospel to them,

  285. when Jesus died on the cross,

  286. He did not go to the place

  287. called hell,

  288. but He experienced

  289. the pain and punishment

  290. of hell.

  291. He experienced

  292. being separated from God,

  293. which is why He cried out,

  294. My God, My God,

  295. why have you forsaken me?

  296. As Jesus hung on the cross,

  297. our sin bearer,

  298. our substitute,

  299. God turned away.

  300. That's why He cried out,

  301. My God, My God,

  302. why have you forsaken me?

  303. He was paying the penalty,

  304. suffering the punishment

  305. that our sins deserve.

  306. Jesus died for our sins.

  307. The first statement in verse 3.

  308. Verse 4,

  309. He was buried.

  310. Now this is stated this way,

  311. but to emphasize,

  312. Jesus really did die.

  313. He didn't just pass out.

  314. Jesus died

  315. and was buried.

  316. He was buried.

  317. He was buried.

  318. He was wrapped in grave clothes.

  319. He was left.

  320. Now,

  321. that also points out

  322. that when Jesus rose from the grave,

  323. it was a true resurrection,

  324. a bodily resurrection

  325. from the dead.

  326. And that's the third statement,

  327. verse 4.

  328. He was raised on the third day.

  329. Jesus was raised from the dead

  330. by the Heavenly Father.

  331. And when Jesus arose from the grave,

  332. it was not something done in secret.

  333. As you read through verses 5 through 8 there,

  334. Jesus appeared to a lot of people

  335. over a period of 40 days,

  336. we read in Acts chapter 1 in verse 3.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  337. Jesus died on the cross.

  338. He arose from the grave.

  339. And He was seen by people

  340. who saw Him die.

  341. He was seen by people

  342. who knew that He was dead.

  343. But He came back to life.

  344. And His resurrection appearances,

  345. it just transformed those disciples

  346. who had run away from Him

  347. at first when He was arrested.

  348. But now,

  349. after they've seen the resurrected Lord

  350. and after the Holy Spirit

  351. came to live within them,

  352. that you read about in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  353. they were never the same again.

  354. God did what He did

  355. in sending Jesus

  356. to die for our sins

  357. because He loves us

  358. and He wanted to save us

  359. even though we didn't deserve it

  360. and we could never earn it.

  361. Paul said it like this

  362. in Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  363. He says,

  364. But God demonstrates

  365. His own love for us in this.

  366. While we were still sinners,

  367. Christ died for us.

  368. By doing what He did,

  369. God has done everything necessary

  370. for us to be forgiven

  371. and made His child.

  372. God's done everything necessary

  373. for us to be saved,

  374. made right with Him.

  375. But I want you to understand.

  376. Jesus' death on the cross,

  377. just the fact that it happened,

  378. it's a historical fact.

  379. But that doesn't,

  380. in and of itself,

  381. save anyone.

  382. No, the Bible says,

  383. we must respond to this good news.

  384. We must respond to this gospel.

  385. And that leads to the second question.

  386. How do we respond to the gospel?

  387. You know, it makes sense.

  388. Everything that,

  389. just about everything in life

  390. that good news that comes to you,

  391. you've got to do something with it

  392. if it's going to help you in any way.

  393. For an example,

  394. if you were to go to the doctor tomorrow,

  395. he does some tests.

  396. By the end of the week,

  397. you are told,

  398. you've got a blockage in an artery.

  399. And it's a serious blockage.

  400. You've got to have something done.

  401. The good news is,

  402. he tells you that

  403. we've caught it at such a point

  404. where there's just medication.

  405. You don't have to have anything else.

  406. We can give you some medication.

  407. You can change your lifestyle.

  408. And this blockage

  409. won't ever give you a problem.

  410. That's good news.

  411. But you've got to act on that good news.

  412. You've got to respond to that good news

  413. for it to do you any good.

  414. You've got to take the medication.

  415. You've got to change that diet.

  416. Do some exercise.

  417. If you don't respond,

  418. the good news will do you

  419. absolutely no good.

  420. Well, the Bible teaches

  421. that we've got to respond

  422. to what God has done for us in Christ

  423. in order for us to get any good out of it,

  424. in order for us to be forgiven.

  425. The Bible says that we've got to respond

  426. to the gospel like this.

  427. We must repent of our sin

  428. and put our faith in Jesus Christ

  429. as our Savior and Lord.

  430. That's what the Apostle Paul

  431. told everyone

  432. when he preached the gospel.

  433. He summarizes this in Acts chapter 20.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  434. Look at what he says.

  435. He says,

  436. I have declared to both Jews and Greeks

  437. and that's his way of saying everyone.

  438. Everywhere I go,

  439. everywhere I preach,

  440. I have declared to both Jews and Greeks

  441. that they must turn to God in repentance

  442. and have faith in our Lord Jesus.

  443. Let's think about those two words,

  444. repentance and faith.

  445. Repentance is a change of mind about sin,

  446. but it's more than that.

  447. If we're truly repentant,

  448. we're not only going to change our mind about our sin,

  449. but we're going to be truly grieved by it.

  450. It's going to bother us to think

  451. that I have disobeyed God.

  452. I have offended Almighty God.

  453. We're going to want to change our mind about it.

  454. We're going to want to turn away from it.

  455. We're going to grieve over it.

  456. It's just going to bother us.

  457. If God is truly convicting us of our sin,

  458. He's shown us that we're separated from Him

  459. and there's no hope unless we come to Christ,

  460. if God's working in us,

  461. He's going to give us this desire

  462. to turn from our sin,

  463. change our mind about it.

  464. We'll grieve over it.

  465. We'll be sorry that we have committed this,

  466. we've lived this kind of way.

  467. We'll want to be different.

  468. We'll want to change.

  469. And what we'll do is we'll turn from our sin

  470. and we'll turn to Jesus Christ in faith.

  471. We will trust Him,

  472. put our confidence in Him,

  473. count on Him that when He died on the cross,

  474. He died to save me.

  475. He paid the penalty for my sin.

  476. Faith involves trusting in Jesus,

  477. who He is.

  478. He's the Son of God.

  479. And what He has done,

  480. dying on the cross,

  481. to pay the penalty for your sins.

  482. If you will respond to the good news of Jesus like this,

  483. God will save you.

  484. He will forgive you.

  485. He'll make you His child now and forever.

  486. And if you truly respond this way,

  487. God will so change you,

  488. you'll never be the same again.

  489. And that leads us to the third question.

  490. What difference has the gospel made in your life?

  491. What difference has this good news made in your life?

  492. The New Testament consistently points out that saving faith is continuing faith.

  493. It's really life-changing faith.

  494. I want you to just note how Paul points it out in verses 1 and 2.

  495. Look at it again.

  496. Writing to Christians,

  497. Now I would remind you,

  498. brothers,

  499. brothers and sisters,

  500. of the gospel I preached to you,

  501. look at it,

  502. which you received,

  503. you accepted,

  504. you believed in.

  505. verse 2,

  506. in which you stand.

  507. You've taken a stand.

  508. You not only believe it,

  509. you're living it.

  510. Verse 2,

  511. by which you are being saved.

  512. Salvation is both a past experience

  513. and a present experience

  514. and a future experience.

  515. It's like this.

  516. When you put your faith in Jesus

  517. as your Savior and Lord,

  518. at that moment in time,

  519. God declares you to be righteous.

  520. He declares you to be right with Him

  521. through faith in Jesus.

  522. The penalty for your sin has been paid.

  523. It was paid by Jesus.

  524. The righteous, perfect life that Jesus lived,

  525. that's credited to you.

  526. It's all at one time.

  527. God justifies you,

  528. declares you to be right with Him

  529. at the moment you believe.

  530. But from that moment on,

  531. God works in you,

  532. if you're a Christian.

  533. If you're truly saved,

  534. God will work in you.

  535. You will continue to believe

  536. and trust in Jesus.

  537. You'll continue to hate sin

  538. and turn from it,

  539. repent of it.

  540. You'll continue to believe

  541. and you will grow

  542. and you'll make progress

  543. in developing Christ-like character.

  544. That's what the Bible calls

  545. sanctification,

  546. becoming like Jesus.

  547. And then,

  548. whenever we die,

  549. true Christians,

  550. when we die,

  551. all the baggage of our sin

  552. and selfishness and worldliness,

  553. we leave it behind.

  554. We're glorified.

  555. we're going to be like Jesus,

  556. finally.

  557. But it's at the end of our life

  558. in this world.

  559. Right here,

  560. Paul is talking about

  561. the gospel,

  562. it continues

  563. to work in a person's life.

  564. But look at verse 2.

  565. There's a qualification here.

  566. I want to remind you,

  567. brothers,

  568. of the gospel I preached to you,

  569. which you received,

  570. in which you stand,

  571. and by which you're being saved,

  572. if you hold fast

  573. to the word I preached to you.

  574. If you continue to believe,

  575. the person who makes

  576. a profession of faith

  577. and then just goes on

  578. about their life

  579. as if nothing ever happened,

  580. nothing ever happened.

  581. I tell,

  582. whether it be a child,

  583. eight or nine years old,

  584. we saw some baptized this morning,

  585. or whether it be someone

  586. 80 years old.

  587. Making a profession of faith

  588. is important,

  589. but if that's all

  590. that ever happens to you,

  591. you cannot have assurance.

  592. I tell everybody I baptized.

  593. We went over it this morning

  594. before we did this.

  595. Baptism does not save you.

  596. It does not make you,

  597. make God love you more

  598. or accept you more.

  599. It is an act of obedience

  600. that a Christian does,

  601. somebody who's trusting in Jesus does,

  602. to make their faith known.

  603. Genuine faith,

  604. if it's real,

  605. if a person's truly born again

  606. by the Spirit of God,

  607. that person will continue in faith.

  608. But,

  609. don't make,

  610. don't jump to any kind

  611. of conclusions here.

  612. I am not teaching,

  613. Paul is not teaching,

  614. that we're saved

  615. by our own efforts.

  616. He's not trying to say

  617. that you become a Christian

  618. through faith in Jesus

  619. and then you do your best

  620. to hang on yourself.

  621. No.

  622. Saving faith is a gift from God.

  623. Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  624. and verse 8 tells us,

  625. when God so works in us

  626. to enable us to believe

  627. and we believe,

  628. God's going to continue

  629. to work in us

  630. to enable us to continue

  631. to believe

  632. and we will continue

  633. to believe.

  634. That's because what God starts,

  635. God finishes.

  636. As Paul says it like this

  637. in Philippians 1,

  638. being confident of this,

  639. that he who began

  640. a good work in you

  641. will carry it on

  642. to completion

  643. until the day

  644. of Christ Jesus.

  645. That's the day

  646. when Jesus comes back.

  647. What God starts,

  648. he finishes.

  649. He never gives up.

  650. He never quits.

  651. True Christians

  652. will continue

  653. in their faith

  654. because God continues

  655. with us.

  656. We become his

  657. and he won't let us alone.

  658. The way God does this,

  659. he gives us desires

  660. if we're really his.

  661. If his spirit lives within us,

  662. he gives us the desire

  663. to be faithful to him.

  664. As Paul points out

  665. again in Philippians,

  666. this time chapter 2,

  667. verse 13,

  668. for it is God

  669. who works in you

  670. to will and to act

  671. according to his good purpose.

  672. There's a major problem

  673. in churches

  674. across all denominational lines

  675. today.

  676. Many people who claim

  677. to be Christians

  678. show absolutely no sign

  679. of having spiritual life.

  680. many Christians

  681. just don't seem

  682. to give a rip

  683. about God

  684. and the things of God.

  685. Church,

  686. prayer,

  687. Bible study,

  688. it's just boring.

  689. Just a waste of time

  690. in their mind.

  691. That cannot happen

  692. if the spirit of God

  693. lives within you

  694. because the spirit of God

  695. is going to cause you

  696. to want to know

  697. your heavenly father better.

  698. It's going to cause you

  699. to want to pray,

  700. to want to study the word,

  701. to want to grow

  702. in your knowledge

  703. and fellowship

  704. and relationship

  705. with God

  706. and with other Christians.

  707. The problem is

  708. that some people

  709. do what Paul said

  710. in verse 2

  711. that we've already looked at.

  712. Some people have

  713. believed in vain.

  714. John MacArthur

  715. explains that

  716. this is a real problem

  717. with this statement.

  718. He says,

  719. by this qualifying statement,

  720. Paul recognizes

  721. and called to their attention

  722. that some may have had

  723. a shallow,

  724. non-saving faith.

  725. There's church members

  726. who've made professions

  727. of faith.

  728. They've had some kind

  729. of emotional experience maybe.

  730. They've been baptized.

  731. Their name's on the church roll.

  732. But,

  733. they believed in vain.

  734. It was shallow.

  735. There was never

  736. any real life changing,

  737. there was no transformation

  738. by the Spirit of God.

  739. It was just believing facts.

  740. Not trusting

  741. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  742. Since the beginning

  743. of the Christian church,

  744. since New Testament days,

  745. there have been people

  746. who claim to be Christians,

  747. but they showed

  748. no real signs

  749. of a relationship

  750. with Jesus.

  751. And Jesus made it

  752. very clear

  753. that such people

  754. are not saved.

  755. Look at it

  756. from Matthew 7.

  757. Jesus said,

  758. Not everyone who says to me,

  759. Lord, Lord,

  760. will enter the kingdom

  761. of heaven,

  762. but only he who does

  763. the will of my Father

  764. who is in heaven.

  765. Many will say to me

  766. on that day,

  767. Lord, Lord,

  768. did we not prophesy

  769. in your name

  770. and in your name

  771. drive out demons

  772. and perform many miracles?

  773. Then I will tell them plainly,

  774. I never knew you.

  775. Away from me,

  776. you evildoers.

  777. Now,

  778. I want to make it

  779. real clear.

  780. There is no Christian

  781. who just perfectly

  782. follows the Lord

  783. and never falls

  784. into temptation,

  785. never gives

  786. into temptation,

  787. never falls

  788. into sin.

  789. That doesn't happen.

  790. We all,

  791. as Christians,

  792. Paul talked about it

  793. in Romans chapter 7.

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  794. He talks about it

  795. in Galatians chapter 5.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  796. We all have struggles.

  797. We all struggle

  798. with the desires

  799. of our sinful nature.

  800. We all have temptations.

  801. And the truth is,

  802. we all fail

  803. more than we like

  804. to admit.

  805. We do sin.

  806. But to think about

  807. a true Christian,

  808. sooner or later

  809. when we sin,

  810. the Spirit of God

  811. within us

  812. is grieved.

  813. And He will convict us.

  814. He will inflict guilt

  815. on us

  816. for the purpose

  817. of causing us

  818. to confess our sin,

  819. to turn from it,

  820. to seek God's forgiveness,

  821. to not live out

  822. of fellowship with Him,

  823. but to come back

  824. to Him

  825. if we're true Christians.

  826. If you're not

  827. a Christian this morning,

  828. I want you to know

  829. that you can come

  830. to God

  831. right now,

  832. no matter who you are,

  833. what you've done.

  834. If you will come

  835. and as Paul said,

  836. repent of your sins,

  837. put your faith

  838. in Jesus Christ

  839. and Him alone

  840. for your salvation,

  841. God will save you.

  842. Scripture says,

  843. whoever calls

  844. on the name of the Lord

  845. will be saved.

  846. And I encourage you

  847. to do that this moment

  848. if you're not a believer,

  849. if you are a Christian.

  850. But right now,

  851. you would say,

  852. I've drifted away

  853. from the Lord.

  854. I'm not close to Him

  855. like I once was.

  856. Or,

  857. it's not that you

  858. drifted away,

  859. you've rebelled.

  860. And the truth is,

  861. you've been living

  862. in willful disobedience.

  863. But if God,

  864. through this message,

  865. has gotten your attention,

  866. softened your heart,

  867. and you truly want

  868. to come back

  869. and be close to Him,

  870. then confess your sin.

  871. He will forgive you

  872. and cleanse you.

  873. He will renew

  874. your commitment to Him

  875. right now.

  876. I encourage you

  877. to do that.

  878. I want us to take

  879. the next few minutes

  880. to prepare to observe

  881. the Lord's Supper

  882. by thinking seriously

  883. about what Jesus

  884. has done for us,

  885. how we have responded,

  886. and how we are living

  887. in relationship with Him

  888. right now.

  889. Listen to the Lord

  890. and you respond to Him

  891. as we have it

  892. just in time of prayer

  893. and preparation

  894. for the Lord's Supper.

  895. Thank you.

  896. Thank you.

  897. Thank you.

  898. Thank you.

  899. Thank you.
