  1. right now because people are already getting into the Christmas mood and it's still 28 days away.

  2. How many of you put up a Christmas tree or some decorations this weekend already? Raise your hand.

  3. A lot of people. I've been married for 38 years now and just as sure as Thursday is Thanksgiving

  4. Day, Saturday after Thanksgiving is when we put up our tree. I don't have a choice. That's what

  5. Elisa wants to do and that's what we do. We put up that tree Saturday after Thanksgiving

  6. always. If holidays were people, Christmas would just be smiling. But if holidays were people,

  7. Thanksgiving would be hurt, even depressed right now. That's because most people it seems only

  8. to give passing notice to Thanksgiving. A lot of people this past Thursday didn't really

  9. think a whole lot about Thanksgiving. They ate their turkey and dressing and planned their

  10. Black Friday shopping or their football watching schedule for this weekend. Thanksgiving would

  11. also be angry because more and more people have elevated Halloween to holiday status and put

  12. less emphasis on Thanksgiving. But think about that. Halloween is basically a pagan notion.

  13. But Thanksgiving is the national holiday created to express heartfelt gratitude to God for the

  14. way he has blessed us in this country. Even though we are three days removed from Thanksgiving Day,

  15. I want us to give our attention to this forgotten holiday this morning, Thanksgiving. But more importantly,

  16. I want us to see how giving thanks to God is found throughout the Bible as an ever-present attitude

  17. among God's people. What I want us to do is answer four questions this morning related to thanks,

  18. thanksgiving. First, are you a thankful person? Are you a thankful person? Some people really are not.

  19. In fact, there's a lot of people, they think more along the lines of being entitled.

  20. A lot of people. I want you to check yourself. Do you believe that you deserve special treatment? At least

  21. from certain people in your life. Do you think that I'm entitled to this or that from my parents or from my

  22. teachers or from my employer? Do you even really expect to be blessed by God?

  23. A lot of people have this entitlement mentality today. But that is contrary to what the Bible teaches

  24. about us, about who we are and really what we should suspect. The Bible is very clear and we've talked

  25. about it a lot over the years and we will always talk about it. The Bible talks about us being sinners by

  26. nature and by choice. And the only thing that we really and truly deserve is death and hell.

  27. The Bible says it like this in Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  28. None is righteous. None is righteous. No, not one. No one understands. No one seeks for God. All have turned aside.

  29. Together they have become worthless. No one does good, not even one.

  30. Now as Paul is quoting from the Old Testament, he is not saying that every person is as bad as they can possibly be.

  31. But he is saying that before God, we are rebels. We are lawbreakers. We are not in any way as we stand before God,

  32. right with Him. We're self-centered people, not God-centered as we should be if He is our Creator.

  33. He really is Almighty God. Paul goes on in Romans chapter 3 to say,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  34. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  35. And then in Romans 6, 23, For the wages of sin is death.

  36. Here's the point.

  37. To think that you are entitled

  38. to God's blessings

  39. is contrary to every single thing

  40. the Bible teaches

  41. about what we truly deserve

  42. from God.

  43. You know, we should never

  44. we should never stop thinking about

  45. the fact that

  46. we don't deserve God's blessings.

  47. We really and truly

  48. it should never become just

  49. old news to us

  50. that we are sinners

  51. separated from God by our sin.

  52. In fact,

  53. if we really know ourselves

  54. we know this is true.

  55. I mean, if you know yourself

  56. you know what's

  57. in your mind sometimes.

  58. You know what's really

  59. some of the desires that you have at times.

  60. We know

  61. from experience

  62. not just from what

  63. the Scripture says

  64. that we really are

  65. sinners by nature.

  66. as well as by choice.

  67. We need to learn

  68. to think of all the good things

  69. that we experience in life

  70. as being gifts

  71. of God's grace.

  72. Just like Richard was singing about

  73. a moment ago.

  74. That means they are totally

  75. undeserved

  76. and they're unearned.

  77. You know,

  78. Paul contrasted

  79. what we deserve

  80. with what God has graciously

  81. given us

  82. through faith in Jesus

  83. in two of those passages

  84. that you see on the screen there.

  85. Let's expand the first one.

  86. Romans 3.23

  87. to include verse 24.

  88. He said,

  89. For all have sinned

  90. and fall short of the glory of God

  91. and are justified

  92. declared righteous

  93. declared right with Him

  94. by His grace

  95. as a gift

  96. through the redemption

  97. that is in Christ Jesus.

  98. While we've all sinned

  99. and come short of the glory of God,

  100. we who are truly believers in Jesus,

  101. through faith in Him,

  102. God declares,

  103. You're right with me

  104. because Jesus has paid the penalty

  105. for our sins.

  106. This is a gift

  107. from God

  108. through Jesus Christ.

  109. And then the next one.

  110. Romans 6.23

  111. The full verse says this,

  112. For the wages of sin is death,

  113. but the free gift of God

  114. is eternal life

  115. in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  116. We've got a lot to be thankful for

  117. every day of our lives.

  118. You know, a lot of times

  119. we spend our time

  120. thinking about what we don't have,

  121. complaining about what's wrong

  122. in our life.

  123. We need to spend more time

  124. thinking about

  125. how we have been blessed

  126. and thinking about

  127. what is right

  128. in our life

  129. and really thinking about

  130. how we don't,

  131. a lot of times,

  132. we don't get what we deserve.

  133. Our salvation is a gift

  134. of God's grace.

  135. You didn't deserve it.

  136. Our salvation is God's free gift

  137. that you could never earn.

  138. That leads to the next question.

  139. What are you thankful for?

  140. What are you,

  141. right now,

  142. thankful for?

  143. If we're Christians,

  144. we need to be

  145. the most thankful people

  146. on earth,

  147. not just on Thanksgiving Day,

  148. but every day

  149. because of what God

  150. has done for us

  151. in Christ.

  152. Calling us to Himself

  153. through faith in Jesus,

  154. forgiving us,

  155. making us His child.

  156. That's at the top of the list.

  157. But what else

  158. are you thankful for?

  159. What are you thankful for

  160. right now?

  161. We really need to

  162. give thanks

  163. for all that we have

  164. because it has been

  165. given to us

  166. by God.

  167. I want you to look

  168. at something that Paul

  169. said to the people

  170. in the church at Corinth.

  171. 1 Corinthians chapter 4

    1 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  172. and verse 7.

  173. They were having

  174. problems in the church.

  175. There was divisions.

  176. There was a lot of pride

  177. over being a part

  178. of this group

  179. or that group

  180. following this leader

  181. or that leader.

  182. And the way Paul

  183. sought to combat that

  184. is to remind them

  185. it's all,

  186. whatever you have,

  187. whoever you are,

  188. it's a gift from God.

  189. Look at it.

  190. 1 Corinthians 4 verse 7.

    1 Corinthians 4:7

  191. What do you have

  192. that you did not receive?

  193. If you received it,

  194. why do you boast

  195. as if you did not receive it?

  196. When I read that first statement,

  197. what do you have

  198. that you did not receive?

  199. That's one of the most

  200. humbling statements

  201. found in the Bible.

  202. Paul was trying to put

  203. these people in their place.

  204. He was trying to tell them,

  205. you have no reason

  206. to be proud.

  207. You have no reason

  208. to elevate certain leaders

  209. and think that

  210. because you're a part

  211. of their group,

  212. you're someone special.

  213. Everything that we are,

  214. everything that you are,

  215. that you're glad

  216. that you are,

  217. as well as everything

  218. that you have,

  219. comes from God.

  220. Our abilities,

  221. our talents,

  222. our gifts,

  223. our opportunities,

  224. our blessings,

  225. they've all been given

  226. to us by God.

  227. I want you to think about that.

  228. Every one of us,

  229. there's something in your life

  230. that you're extremely proud of.

  231. I can look around,

  232. some of you men,

  233. you greatly

  234. outmarried yourself.

  235. Some of you who,

  236. that I know

  237. are going to get married,

  238. you're engaged,

  239. you're close to it.

  240. You really outpunted

  241. your coverage, boy.

  242. One in particular

  243. I'm looking at right there.

  244. You need to understand,

  245. it's not because

  246. you're so good looking.

  247. Maybe because she's blind.

  248. But it may be,

  249. it's not because

  250. you're good looking,

  251. not because of

  252. this or that.

  253. In the big scheme of things,

  254. God has blessed you

  255. that way.

  256. If you've got a job

  257. that you just

  258. are thrilled to have,

  259. thank God

  260. for the ability

  261. that you have,

  262. for the opportunity,

  263. for whatever it is

  264. that He worked out

  265. to put you there.

  266. Thank Him.

  267. Paul is asking

  268. this question

  269. with the obvious answer.

  270. What do you have

  271. that you did not receive?

  272. Obviously nothing.

  273. If you received it,

  274. why do you boast

  275. as if you did not receive it?

  276. If we'll think deeply

  277. about this.

  278. I mean,

  279. let it really sink in.

  280. This will help us

  281. to avoid being arrogant,

  282. being prideful.

  283. It will also help us

  284. to really and truly

  285. be thankful

  286. for whatever it is

  287. that we have

  288. because it's a gift

  289. from God.

  290. That's how God

  291. wants us to think.

  292. He wants us

  293. to be thankful

  294. for all of life's

  295. good gifts,

  296. which leads us

  297. to the third question

  298. this morning.

  299. Who are you thankful to?

  300. Who are you thankful to?

  301. Now here's where

  302. we come to the real difference

  303. between Christians

  304. and unbelievers.

  305. There's a lot of people

  306. in the world

  307. who would consider themselves

  308. to be atheists

  309. or agnostics,

  310. but they're thankful

  311. to someone.

  312. They're thankful

  313. for certain things.

  314. We who are Christians,

  315. we need to learn

  316. at the top of the list

  317. to be thankful to God

  318. because He really is

  319. the source of all the good

  320. that we experience in life.

  321. Look at it as James tells us

  322. in chapter 1, verse 17.

  323. Every good gift

  324. and every perfect gift

  325. is from above

  326. coming down

  327. from the Father of lights

  328. with whom there is

  329. no variation or shadow

  330. due to change.

  331. The Father of lights.

  332. He's talking about how

  333. the heavenly bodies,

  334. the sun, the moon,

  335. they change.

  336. At least we perceive change.

  337. The sun rises and sets.

  338. The moon goes

  339. through different phases.

  340. But God is constant.

  341. God does not change.

  342. We can count on Him

  343. because of who He is

  344. and what He does.

  345. God is good

  346. in terms of who He is.

  347. In James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  348. in verse 13,

  349. prior to talking about

  350. how every good and gift

  351. comes from God,

  352. James had tried

  353. to help these people

  354. understand you never

  355. blame God for evil.

  356. God is not the source

  357. of temptation in your life.

  358. Here's how He says it

  359. in James 1.13.

  360. Let no one say

  361. when he is tempted,

  362. I am being tempted

  363. by God.

  364. For God cannot be tempted

  365. with evil

  366. and He Himself

  367. tempts no one.

  368. God cannot be tempted

  369. by evil

  370. and He cannot tempt

  371. anyone with evil

  372. because it's just contrary

  373. to who He is.

  374. It's contrary to His nature.

  375. God is holy.

  376. He is above sin.

  377. He is immune

  378. to sin.

  379. And so evil

  380. is present in this world

  381. but we can't say

  382. this comes from God.

  383. He's to blame for it.

  384. God is good

  385. in terms of who He is

  386. and God is good

  387. in terms of what He gives.

  388. He's never the source of evil,

  389. verse 13,

  390. and He only gives good gifts,

  391. verse 17,

  392. that you see.

  393. Because God is good like this,

  394. we can trust Him.

  395. He can be trusted

  396. as our Heavenly Father.

  397. We can have confidence in Him.

  398. He's for us

  399. as His children.

  400. That brings up a question,

  401. doesn't it?

  402. It makes me think as well,

  403. what about all the things

  404. that happen in our lives

  405. that are not good?

  406. There is plenty of evil

  407. in this world

  408. and you cannot deny it.

  409. Christians,

  410. a lot of times,

  411. suffer,

  412. experience all kinds of pain.

  413. Well, Paul answers the question,

  414. what about all these kind of things

  415. in relation to God being good?

  416. Paul answers that question

  417. in various ways

  418. throughout his writings

  419. as well as the whole Bible.

  420. But Paul answers that question

  421. in the context

  422. in 1 Thessalonians 5

  423. of telling us to be thankful.

  424. I want you to look at it.

  425. 1 Thessalonians 5, 18,

  426. give thanks in all circumstances.

  427. Paul, as he's winding down

  428. that letter to that church,

  429. he tells them certain things

  430. they need to be doing,

  431. issues certain little short,

  432. brief commands.

  433. And one of them is,

  434. give thanks in all circumstances.

  435. That does not mean, though,

  436. to thank God for evil.

  437. It does not mean

  438. that you thank God

  439. for things that are

  440. obviously contrary to

  441. His will,

  442. His design.

  443. Suffering comes into our lives.

  444. We are touched by evil.

  445. Paul wants us to think

  446. when those times come,

  447. you don't thank God

  448. for the evil.

  449. You don't thank God

  450. for the sinful things

  451. that people do.

  452. But you do thank God

  453. that He is sovereign.

  454. You do thank Him

  455. that He is good

  456. and that He is going

  457. to work everything out

  458. for His glory

  459. and ultimate good.

  460. And I hope that brings

  461. to your mind,

  462. Romans 8, 28,

  463. one of the most comforting

  464. words from God

  465. in all the Bible.

  466. And we know that

  467. in all things,

  468. God works for the good

  469. of those who love Him,

  470. who've been called

  471. according to His purpose.

  472. All things are not good.

  473. There's a lot of terrible things,

  474. a lot of suffering and pain

  475. even Christians experience.

  476. We don't know why

  477. God allows these things.

  478. We don't see all

  479. that He actually does

  480. in bringing about

  481. ultimate good even.

  482. But one of the ways

  483. that Romans 29

  484. is talking about

  485. how God works

  486. everything for good,

  487. it goes on in verse 29

  488. to talk about

  489. how God is working

  490. in our lives

  491. to conform us

  492. to the image of His Son.

  493. God is working in evil.

  494. He's working in pain

  495. and suffering

  496. to perfect us,

  497. our character,

  498. to make us more like

  499. His Son Jesus.

  500. And so,

  501. in all of our circumstances,

  502. we can trust God

  503. that He is sovereign,

  504. He is in control,

  505. He is good,

  506. and He is powerfully

  507. working out good

  508. in our lives,

  509. if nothing else,

  510. but developing

  511. our Christ-like character.

  512. But He's also working out

  513. things for ultimate good

  514. that we may not even see

  515. until heaven one day.

  516. But we can trust

  517. that in all things,

  518. God is at work

  519. and He's working everything

  520. for His glory.

  521. There's meaning,

  522. there is purpose,

  523. even in our sufferings.

  524. You know,

  525. one of the best examples

  526. of how we are to thank God

  527. for all things

  528. is found in the way

  529. that Paul thanked God

  530. for everything,

  531. including the good

  532. that He saw

  533. in people's lives.

  534. I want you to look with me

  535. at Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  536. in verse 8.

  537. Romans is the first letter

  538. in the New Testament

  539. that the Apostle Paul wrote.

  540. If you open your New Testament,

  541. you'll see Matthew, Mark, Luke,

  542. John, Acts,

  543. then Romans.

  544. Beginning with Romans,

  545. you're going to go

  546. through Paul's letters.

  547. in most of those letters,

  548. in the majority

  549. of those letters,

  550. he's going to begin

  551. by thanking God

  552. and then thank God

  553. for what he's doing

  554. in the lives

  555. of those people.

  556. Let's look at two examples.

  557. Romans 1.8.

  558. First,

  559. I thank my God

  560. through Jesus Christ

  561. for all of you

  562. because your faith

  563. is proclaimed

  564. in all the world.

  565. First,

  566. I thank my God

  567. through Jesus Christ

  568. for all of you.

  569. I'm thanking God.

  570. I'm thanking God

  571. for you

  572. and I'm thanking God

  573. for how you're living,

  574. how you're actually

  575. putting the gospel

  576. into practice,

  577. how you're living

  578. like Christians

  579. because your faith

  580. is proclaimed

  581. in all the world.

  582. People are talking

  583. about you

  584. and they're talking

  585. about you good.

  586. You know,

  587. none of us really

  588. want people

  589. to talk about us

  590. but they're going to.

  591. All of us

  592. are going to be talked

  593. about sooner or later,

  594. more or less.

  595. It's okay

  596. if they talk about us

  597. the good

  598. that God's doing

  599. in us and through us.

  600. Another example,

  601. 1 Thessalonians chapter 1

    1 Thessalonians 1:2

  602. verses 2 and 3.

  603. He's writing

  604. to this group

  605. of Christians.

  606. We give thanks

  607. to God always

  608. for all of you,

  609. constantly mentioning

  610. you in our prayers.

  611. remembering before

  612. our God and Father

  613. your work of faith

  614. and labor of love

  615. and steadfastness

  616. of hope

  617. in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  618. Paul thanked God

  619. for what he had done

  620. in these people's lives

  621. to save them,

  622. change them,

  623. and enable them

  624. to actually live

  625. like Christians

  626. in the midst

  627. of a tough world

  628. where most people

  629. were not Christians.

  630. What Paul is doing,

  631. he's complimenting them.

  632. You see,

  633. Paul is writing

  634. this letter.

  635. He's not just

  636. praying to God

  637. privately

  638. where nobody will hear.

  639. He's not just

  640. writing a personal letter

  641. that only one person

  642. is going to read.

  643. Paul is writing

  644. a letter

  645. that was to be read

  646. to the entire church

  647. and would be circulated

  648. among other

  649. Christian churches.

  650. And so what he's doing

  651. is he is publicly

  652. complimenting them.

  653. How they've responded,

  654. how they've developed

  655. a powerful testimony

  656. as God's people.

  657. Paul said things like this,

  658. to praise God,

  659. give public thanks to God,

  660. but also to publicly

  661. affirm them,

  662. to encourage them,

  663. and yes,

  664. to thank them

  665. for their faithfulness.

  666. Another example

  667. we see real clear,

  668. 2 Thessalonians 1,

    2 Thessalonians 1:3

  669. verse 3.

  670. He says,

  671. We are always to give

  672. thanks to God

  673. for you, brothers,

  674. as is right,

  675. because your faith

  676. is growing abundantly

  677. and the love

  678. of every one of you

  679. for one another

  680. is increasing.

  681. What I want us to see

  682. is that this is

  683. a good example

  684. of how we ought

  685. to express gratitude

  686. to God,

  687. but also

  688. to others.

  689. You and I,

  690. we need to do more

  691. than just be thankful

  692. to God.

  693. We need to thank God

  694. for people in our lives

  695. who are meaningful to us,

  696. but we need to learn

  697. to thank people.

  698. expressing gratitude

  699. to people

  700. is something

  701. most of us

  702. need to put more

  703. emphasis on.

  704. Do you do that

  705. as a matter of habit

  706. in your home,

  707. for example?

  708. You who are living

  709. at home with your parents,

  710. they do a lot for you.

  711. You may not acknowledge it,

  712. you may not appreciate

  713. it sometimes,

  714. but they do a lot

  715. for you.

  716. If nothing else,

  717. they're letting you live there.

  718. Probably not charging you

  719. a dime,

  720. and you cost something,

  721. you know?

  722. You're expensive.

  723. But what I want you

  724. to think about is,

  725. do you tell them,

  726. boys and girls,

  727. young people,

  728. young adults,

  729. do you take the time

  730. to express thanks,

  731. appreciation,

  732. those people who are

  733. providing for most

  734. of your needs,

  735. and do you do it

  736. with sincerity?

  737. You know,

  738. one reason

  739. we ought to do this

  740. is because it's just

  741. the right thing to do.

  742. But also,

  743. expressing gratitude

  744. helps us to develop

  745. better relationships.

  746. It really does.

  747. It makes us

  748. more appreciative

  749. of the person

  750. who blesses us

  751. if we'll take time

  752. to think about

  753. just what all

  754. they've done for us.

  755. It will make us

  756. more appreciative

  757. if we'll just

  758. stop and think

  759. of what the person

  760. who's helping us,

  761. taking care of us,

  762. doing stuff for us.

  763. If we'll just stop

  764. and think

  765. what it is they're doing,

  766. what it costs them

  767. to do it.

  768. Maybe in terms of time,

  769. maybe in terms of energy,

  770. not necessarily monetarily.

  771. Do you know

  772. that it's really

  773. a reward

  774. for you to take time

  775. to give thanks

  776. to somebody

  777. who is investing

  778. in you?

  779. It's not just

  780. among family members,

  781. but all of us.

  782. Have you ever had

  783. somebody to

  784. give you something?

  785. Maybe it was a gift,

  786. maybe it was their time,

  787. they just gave you

  788. something,

  789. and you thought

  790. to yourself,

  791. it is important.

  792. They've really

  793. given of themselves,

  794. and you may think

  795. under some of those

  796. circumstances,

  797. I want to pay them back.

  798. If somebody

  799. has given you

  800. something because

  801. they just love you,

  802. and they wanted

  803. to give it to you,

  804. they don't want

  805. to be paid back.

  806. You'll insult them

  807. if you talk about

  808. paying them back.

  809. You know what

  810. would be

  811. their greatest

  812. reward?

  813. For you to look

  814. them in the eye

  815. and smile

  816. and express

  817. genuine appreciation,

  818. thanks,

  819. hug them,

  820. touch them,

  821. do it from the heart,

  822. do it with all

  823. sincerity.

  824. That will reward

  825. them more than

  826. you would ever

  827. imagine.

  828. that's really

  829. a lot of times.

  830. You think about

  831. when you give

  832. to someone

  833. you really care

  834. about,

  835. you're not

  836. expecting

  837. anything in return,

  838. but it makes

  839. it all worthwhile

  840. when they look

  841. at you

  842. and that smile

  843. or that touch

  844. and they express

  845. gratitude

  846. for what you've

  847. done.

  848. Let's conclude

  849. with one final

  850. question.

  851. why do you

  852. thank God?

  853. Why do you

  854. thank God

  855. assuming that

  856. we all in here

  857. do?

  858. If you give

  859. someone a gift

  860. at Christmas

  861. or you just

  862. do something

  863. for someone,

  864. period,

  865. would you be

  866. satisfied if

  867. that person

  868. just only

  869. gave you

  870. an obliging

  871. word of

  872. thanks

  873. but didn't

  874. show any

  875. interest

  876. or affection

  877. to you

  878. as a

  879. person?

  880. You do

  881. something,

  882. you give

  883. something

  884. and someone

  885. doesn't really,

  886. they don't really

  887. acknowledge you.

  888. They may

  889. acknowledge your

  890. gift,

  891. but they don't

  892. acknowledge you.

  893. Sometimes

  894. it makes you

  895. feel hurt,

  896. doesn't it?

  897. In some

  898. situations

  899. you can feel

  900. insulted

  901. or you

  902. can just

  903. feel

  904. used.

  905. Hearing

  906. words of

  907. thanks

  908. don't mean

  909. anything

  910. unless they

  911. include

  912. your

  913. genuine

  914. personal

  915. interest

  916. that you

  917. express

  918. somehow

  919. as you

  920. give that

  921. word of

  922. thanks.

  923. God

  924. feels the

  925. same

  926. way

  927. when we

  928. are more

  929. interested

  930. in His

  931. gifts

  932. than we

  933. are in

  934. Him.

  935. Are you

  936. thankful to

  937. God

  938. not just

  939. for the

  940. things

  941. or the

  942. people He

  943. puts into

  944. your life?

  945. Are you

  946. truly

  947. thankful

  948. to God

  949. God?

  950. God

  951. because you

  952. love Him

  953. and you

  954. want to

  955. express

  956. gratitude

  957. to Him

  958. just because

  959. you love

  960. Him.

  961. You want

  962. Him to

  963. know that

  964. you are

  965. thankful for

  966. that special

  967. person,

  968. for that

  969. job,

  970. for that

  971. gift,

  972. whatever it

  973. may be.

  974. True

  975. gratitude to

  976. God can

  977. only be

  978. expressed from

  979. someone who

  980. has a heart

  981. for God.

  982. and that

  983. heart for

  984. God has

  985. to be

  986. developed in

  987. the context

  988. of a loving

  989. relationship

  990. with Him.

  991. We cannot

  992. truly thank

  993. God if we

  994. don't know

  995. Him, if we

  996. don't have a

  997. relationship with

  998. Him through

  999. Jesus Christ.

  1000. So I want to

  1001. ask you now,

  1002. do you have

  1003. such a

  1004. relationship

  1005. with God?

  1006. Do you want

  1007. one if you

  1008. don't?

  1009. You can have

  1010. such a

  1011. relationship,

  1012. it can

  1013. begin today

  1014. by admitting

  1015. to God,

  1016. just like we

  1017. said at the

  1018. beginning,

  1019. that I am

  1020. a sinner.

  1021. And I know

  1022. that I have

  1023. come short

  1024. of your

  1025. expectations.

  1026. I know

  1027. that I have

  1028. failed you.

  1029. I know

  1030. that I have

  1031. been more

  1032. self-centered

  1033. than God-centered.

  1034. Admit your

  1035. sin.

  1036. Express your

  1037. sorrow to

  1038. God for

  1039. having

  1040. dishonored

  1041. Him,

  1042. ignored Him,

  1043. and sinned

  1044. against Him

  1045. like this.

  1046. Turn from

  1047. your sin.

  1048. Change your

  1049. mind about it.

  1050. Put your

  1051. faith in

  1052. Jesus,

  1053. that when

  1054. He died

  1055. on the

  1056. cross,

  1057. He actually

  1058. paid the

  1059. penalty for

  1060. your sin.

  1061. Call upon

  1062. Him to

  1063. save you,

  1064. forgive you,

  1065. make you a

  1066. child of God.

  1067. Do that

  1068. now.

  1069. You can

  1070. begin a

  1071. relationship

  1072. with Him.

  1073. for some

  1074. people in

  1075. this room,

  1076. the question

  1077. is this.

  1078. Did you

  1079. once have

  1080. a relationship

  1081. with God

  1082. that was

  1083. close?

  1084. It was

  1085. loving.

  1086. It was

  1087. real.

  1088. It was

  1089. personal.

  1090. But now,

  1091. it's just

  1092. distant.

  1093. It's just

  1094. not really

  1095. personal

  1096. anymore.

  1097. Maybe you're

  1098. even reading

  1099. the Bible

  1100. regularly.

  1101. Maybe your

  1102. relationship

  1103. with God

  1104. is more

  1105. along the

  1106. lines of

  1107. being academic

  1108. rather than

  1109. anything else.

  1110. My question

  1111. is, do you

  1112. want to come

  1113. back to Him?

  1114. Do you want

  1115. Him to restore

  1116. for you the

  1117. joy of your

  1118. salvation?

  1119. If you know

  1120. why there's

  1121. separation,

  1122. why there's

  1123. distance,

  1124. confess that to

  1125. God, you

  1126. repent of

  1127. it.

  1128. And the

  1129. Scripture says

  1130. if we confess

  1131. our sins, He

  1132. is faithful and

  1133. just to forgive

  1134. us and to

  1135. cleanse us.

  1136. He'll give us a

  1137. fresh start.

  1138. He'll welcome

  1139. you back.

  1140. Could be that

  1141. you would say

  1142. that I don't

  1143. really know

  1144. why.

  1145. It's just

  1146. happened over

  1147. time or

  1148. something, but

  1149. I just don't

  1150. have the close

  1151. personal

  1152. relationship with

  1153. the Lord that

  1154. I once had.

  1155. Just tell Him

  1156. that.

  1157. You don't have

  1158. to know why.

  1159. Just come back

  1160. to Him.

  1161. Scripture says

  1162. if we will

  1163. draw near to

  1164. God, He'll

  1165. draw near to

  1166. us.

  1167. Ask God to

  1168. show you what

  1169. the problem is.

  1170. To show you

  1171. what the solution

  1172. is.

  1173. But the

  1174. beginning part of

  1175. that solution

  1176. is to come

  1177. back to Him.

  1178. Humble

  1179. yourself.

  1180. Seek Him.

  1181. Commit

  1182. yourself and

  1183. you are

  1184. fresh to Him.

  1185. I want to

  1186. end this

  1187. message with

  1188. the words from

  1189. Psalm 100.

  1190. The only

  1191. psalm that

  1192. is entitled

  1193. is a psalm

  1194. of thanksgiving.

  1195. It's actually

  1196. entitled a

  1197. psalm for

  1198. giving thanks.

  1199. The last two

  1200. verses are

  1201. this.

  1202. Enter His

  1203. gates with

  1204. thanksgiving and

  1205. His courts with

  1206. praise.

  1207. Give thanks to

  1208. Him and bless

  1209. praise His name.

  1210. For the Lord is

  1211. good and His

  1212. love endures

  1213. forever.

  1214. His faithfulness

  1215. continues through

  1216. all generations.

  1217. Thank God and

  1218. praise Him because

  1219. of who He is.

  1220. Because He is our

  1221. good God who

  1222. will love us

  1223. forever and who

  1224. will be faithful

  1225. to us forever

  1226. and ever.

  1227. would you pray

  1228. with me?

  1229. Father,

  1230. Father,

  1231. Father,

  1232. show us how

  1233. we should

  1234. respond

  1235. so that we

  1236. can leave here

  1237. today as people

  1238. who are truly

  1239. thankful.

  1240. We're thankful

  1241. to You for

  1242. who You are,

  1243. how You are,

  1244. and what You do.

  1245. But Lord,

  1246. help us to also

  1247. leave here as

  1248. people who are

  1249. thankful for the

  1250. people You've put

  1251. in our life who

  1252. bless us, who

  1253. help us.

  1254. Help us,

  1255. Father, to be

  1256. thankful for the

  1257. gifts, the

  1258. talents, the

  1259. opportunities, the

  1260. things that we

  1261. have and enjoy.

  1262. Lord,

  1263. help us,

  1264. Father, to be

  1265. thankful even in

  1266. the tough times,

  1267. the hard times,

  1268. because we know

  1269. You are sovereign

  1270. and You are

  1271. good and You're

  1272. working in all

  1273. those tough times

  1274. for Your glory

  1275. and our good.

  1276. Father, show us

  1277. how we should

  1278. respond.

  1279. Help us to do

  1280. that now and

  1281. leave here as

  1282. Your thankful

  1283. people.

  1284. Let's just

  1285. continue in an

  1286. attitude of

  1287. prayer and you

  1288. respond to the

  1289. Lord as He

  1290. speaks.

  1291. If I could help

  1292. you, pray with

  1293. you, I'll be

  1294. here at the

  1295. front and be

  1296. happy to do

  1297. that.
