  1. In a few days, we're going to begin a new year with a lot of new faces, new voices leading our government.

  2. But for many years, no matter who is in the White House or which party controls Congress,

  3. most Americans are very pessimistic about our government.

  4. It seems that the words of former President Ronald Reagan, words he said 30 years ago,

  5. it seems that it becomes more accurate with each passing year.

  6. You remember them.

  7. The nine most terrifying words in the English language are,

  8. I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

  9. Those words are probably true about every government in the world.

  10. But the Bible tells us about a future government that God's people will not fear.

  11. That we will not fear.

  12. Because it will be the government of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  13. The future government over which Jesus will rule.

  14. The future government over which He will preside is a part of the Christmas story that sometimes gets overlooked.

  15. But it's a part of the angel's message to Mary.

  16. The angel told her that she had been chosen by God to be the mother of God's Son.

  17. Look at what was said.

  18. The angel said,

  19. Now that statement was really compiled from several Old Testament prophecies.

  20. where God had promised He was going to send His Messiah.

  21. One of the more well-known prophecies,

  22. one that's very familiar to us at Christmas time,

  23. is Isaiah chapter 9, verses 6 and 7.

    Isaiah 9:6

  24. That's sort of been our unofficial theme for Christmas this year.

  25. I started,

  26. I preached one message on it.

  27. The children's choir,

  28. we have sung about certain aspects of this.

  29. Let's read it one more time.

  30. Isaiah chapter 9, verses 6 and 7.

    Isaiah 9:6

  31. For unto us a child is born,

  32. to us a son is given,

  33. and the government shall be upon His shoulder,

  34. and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,

  35. Mighty God,

  36. Everlasting Father,

  37. Prince of Peace.

  38. Of the increase of His government and of peace,

  39. there will be no end.

  40. on the throne of David,

  41. and over His kingdom,

  42. to establish it,

  43. and to uphold it with justice,

  44. and with righteousness,

  45. from this time forth,

  46. and forevermore.

  47. The zeal of the Lord of hosts

  48. will do this.

  49. The baby whose birth we celebrate

  50. this morning

  51. is no ordinary baby.

  52. He is King Jesus,

  53. the Son of God,

  54. who will one day return to this world

  55. and rule over an eternal government,

  56. a government that we can have

  57. absolute confidence in

  58. and never fear,

  59. never distrust

  60. because of who leads it.

  61. Just think,

  62. one day we can trust our government

  63. because King Jesus

  64. will rule over it completely.

  65. Look at this phrase from Isaiah.

  66. The government shall be upon His shoulder.

  67. One commentator said

  68. this may refer to how a king

  69. would sometimes wear a golden chain

  70. around his neck

  71. that hung down

  72. and rested on his shoulder,

  73. symbolizing his authority.

  74. When Jesus returns to this world,

  75. He is not going to come

  76. as He did the first time,

  77. as a vulnerable baby.

  78. He's going to come

  79. in power,

  80. in authority,

  81. as the Almighty Son of God

  82. and the sovereign ruler

  83. of this world.

  84. His rule will be characterized

  85. by peace,

  86. not war,

  87. justice,

  88. not favoritism,

  89. and righteousness,

  90. never corruption.

  91. That leads us to another reason

  92. why we'll be able to trust

  93. this government,

  94. the government of Jesus.

  95. King Jesus will rule over it

  96. with the highest character.

  97. Look at the phrase again from Isaiah.

  98. To establish it

  99. and to uphold it

  100. with justice

  101. and with righteousness.

  102. We live in a day

  103. where the character of leaders,

  104. it seems,

  105. just doesn't matter.

  106. It's been that way

  107. for quite some time.

  108. But deep down,

  109. we know better.

  110. And deep down,

  111. we really want better.

  112. And the day will come

  113. when we will get better

  114. because we're going to get

  115. a perfect leader.

  116. We're going to get a leader

  117. that we can trust

  118. because of who He is

  119. and because of what He does.

  120. Look back,

  121. if you've got your Bible open,

  122. in Isaiah,

    Isaiah 9:6

  123. chapter 9,

  124. verse 6,

  125. at the names

  126. or the titles

  127. that Isaiah prophesied

  128. would be given to Jesus.

  129. Think about what,

  130. think about the person Jesus is

  131. as well as

  132. the power that He has

  133. using these names.

  134. As wonderful counselor,

  135. He guides us

  136. with perfect wisdom.

  137. We can count on that.

  138. As mighty God,

  139. He protects us

  140. with His sovereign power.

  141. As everlasting Father,

  142. He cares for us

  143. with unending love.

  144. Then as Prince of Peace,

  145. He provides us

  146. with peace with God

  147. and the peace of God.

  148. which we looked at

  149. last night.

  150. It will not be difficult

  151. for us to trust

  152. the government

  153. of King Jesus

  154. because we will have

  155. absolute confidence

  156. in Him,

  157. in who He is,

  158. His character,

  159. in what He has done

  160. and is doing

  161. because He is

  162. God Almighty,

  163. God in the flesh.

  164. One day,

  165. we will be able

  166. to trust our government

  167. and never have to worry

  168. about it changing

  169. because King Jesus

  170. will rule over it

  171. forever.

  172. Look at one more phrase.

  173. Of the increase

  174. of His government

  175. and of peace,

  176. there will be

  177. no end.

  178. His government

  179. will always be growing

  180. and expanding,

  181. but not like

  182. the federal government

  183. of the United States

  184. that's always growing,

  185. that's always expanding

  186. its bureaucracy.

  187. This government,

  188. the government

  189. of King Jesus,

  190. will always be in the,

  191. be growing in the positive qualities

  192. of this King,

  193. growing in the positive qualities

  194. of peace,

  195. of justice,

  196. of righteousness.

  197. What Ronald Reagan

  198. said 30 years ago,

  199. he said it,

  200. there was truth,

  201. but it was intended

  202. to be funny,

  203. a lot of humor,

  204. but if you stop

  205. and think about it,

  206. there's too much truth

  207. in this statement.

  208. The nine most terrifying words

  209. in the English language

  210. are,

  211. I'm from the government

  212. and I'm here to help.

  213. But the words of Jesus,

  214. none of them

  215. are ever scary.

  216. They're comforting.

  217. For an example,

  218. in John 10,

  219. Jesus said,

  220. I came that they

  221. may have life

  222. and have it

  223. abundantly.

  224. Now,

  225. I must add

  226. that those words

  227. are only comforting

  228. to those

  229. who trust Jesus

  230. as their Savior

  231. and have already

  232. submitted

  233. to Him

  234. as their King.

  235. If you don't know

  236. Jesus as your Savior

  237. and as your King,

  238. I want to encourage you

  239. to turn to Him

  240. right now.

  241. There is no better day

  242. than Christmas Day

  243. for you to admit

  244. to God

  245. that you are in need

  246. of the Savior

  247. that He sent.

  248. Turn from your sin.

  249. Change your mind.

  250. Stop living

  251. for yourself.

  252. Ask God

  253. to help you.

  254. Put your faith,

  255. your confidence,

  256. your absolute trust

  257. in Jesus Christ

  258. that when He died

  259. on the cross,

  260. He paid the penalty

  261. for your sins.

  262. He did everything

  263. necessary

  264. for you to be

  265. forgiven by God,

  266. to be made

  267. a child of God.

  268. So call upon Him

  269. to save you.

  270. now,

  271. this Christmas Day.

  272. I want to conclude

  273. with the Christmas story

  274. summarized in one verse.

  275. For God so loved

  276. the world,

  277. He gave His only Son

  278. that whoever believes

  279. in Him

  280. will not perish

  281. but will have

  282. eternal life.

  283. And if you trust Him

  284. or you will trust Him,

  285. there's no greater

  286. confidence,

  287. no greater comfort

  288. that you'll ever experience.

  289. King Jesus,

  290. we have confidence

  291. in Him.

  292. We always can.

  293. Let's bow together

  294. and thank Him

  295. for that now.

  296. Dear God,

  297. thank you so much

  298. for sending

  299. your Son

  300. into this world

  301. to save us,

  302. to make us

  303. right with you,

  304. to make us

  305. your children.

  306. Thank you, Father,

  307. that through faith

  308. in Jesus

  309. we can be confident

  310. that our sins

  311. are forgiven,

  312. that you are

  313. our Heavenly Father,

  314. that you will

  315. enable us

  316. to experience

  317. peace with you

  318. now

  319. and for all

  320. eternity.

  321. We,

  322. your children,

  323. thank you

  324. and praise you

  325. for this

  326. greatest

  327. of all time

  328. gifts.

  329. the gift

  330. of eternal life

  331. in Jesus.

  332. And Father,

  333. we who are Christians,

  334. we pray

  335. right now

  336. and ask that

  337. you would move

  338. in the life

  339. of

  340. everyone in this room

  341. who's not a Christian

  342. to draw them

  343. to faith in Jesus

  344. and that today,

  345. Christmas Day,

  346. 2016,

  347. will be their day

  348. of salvation.

  349. In Jesus' name

  350. we pray.

  351. Amen.
