  1. 15 days into a brand new year.

  2. How are you coming with your New Year's resolutions?

  3. You know, I know a lot of people don't make them.

  4. I rarely ever hear anyone talk about their New Year's resolutions,

  5. but evidently many people do make them.

  6. The Nielsen organization, the one that measures TV viewing,

  7. they did a survey a couple of years ago,

  8. and they came out, as you see on the screen,

  9. with a top 10 New Year's resolution list in 2015.

  10. Only 16% of the people, if you look down, do not make resolutions.

  11. As you look at that list, what's missing?

  12. Two things are not on that list that really do surprise me.

  13. First, there's no mention of God on there.

  14. I mean, there's no mention of God, of spirituality, of religion.

  15. And that was a poll taken among Americans,

  16. where we profess to believe in God.

  17. Many still profess to be Christians.

  18. But out of the top 10 New Year's resolutions,

  19. drawing closer to God was not on there.

  20. Learning more about how to please Him,

  21. how to live like a Christian was not on there.

  22. The other thing that was not on the list that surprises me,

  23. there was nothing there about controlling your tongue.

  24. The other thing on there about watching your words.

  25. Don't you get into more trouble with your words than anything else?

  26. I mean, I do.

  27. And I know you do, too.

  28. If you don't think you do,

  29. you're in bigger trouble than you think.

  30. Because people who know you would say,

  31. yes, he, she does say things they ought not say sometimes.

  32. Young people, you think about it.

  33. How many times have you gotten in trouble at home or school

  34. because of something you said or the way you said it?

  35. Wouldn't that be the reason why you get in trouble more times than not?

  36. It always was when I was growing up.

  37. Adults.

  38. How many conflicts have you had recently over something you said

  39. or was said to you,

  40. either in person, in an email, or on social media?

  41. You know, if you keep up with the news,

  42. just about every week,

  43. you read where an athlete, entertainer, business person, or politician

  44. has gotten into trouble over the words they spoke, tweeted, or posted.

  45. It's just happening all the time.

  46. We know words have power.

  47. Words have tremendous power.

  48. They can help.

  49. They can hurt.

  50. That's why the book of Proverbs has so much to say about our speech.

  51. Chuck Swindoll does a good job of pointing out

  52. the wealth of teaching about our words in Proverbs.

  53. Look at it.

  54. He says,

  55. Solomon had a lot to say about what we say.

  56. In fact,

  57. the terms tongue, mouth, lips, and words

  58. occur almost 150 times in Proverbs.

  59. On average,

  60. a reference to speech

  61. appears five times in each of the 31 chapters.

  62. Seems to me any subject mentioned that often

  63. calls for extended attention

  64. in our examination of the book of Proverbs.

  65. He's right, isn't he?

  66. If God filled this great book of wisdom

  67. with so much

  68. about our speech,

  69. we need to pay close attention.

  70. We need to look closely

  71. at what he says.

  72. So I would like to do this

  73. for the next two or three weeks.

  74. And I want to begin today by looking at

  75. why we need to be serious about our speech.

  76. And the first thing I want you to notice

  77. is the power of our words

  78. as seen in Proverbs chapter 18.

    Proverbs 18 chapter mention

  79. Our words are powerful.

  80. We know that.

  81. But look at how they're described here

  82. in this one verse,

  83. Proverbs 18, 21.

  84. Death and life

  85. are in the power of the tongue.

  86. And those who love it

  87. will eat its fruits.

  88. The first part of this verse

  89. is simple to understand.

  90. The tongue,

  91. which is a reference to our speech,

  92. our words.

  93. It has the power of life and death,

  94. literally

  95. and figuratively.

  96. The second part is not as straightforward,

  97. but we can figure it out.

  98. Look at it.

  99. Those who love it.

  100. That's referring to the tongue.

  101. He's just been talking about

  102. the power of the tongue

  103. and those who love it.

  104. The tongue will eat its fruits.

  105. The idea is

  106. those who love to talk

  107. or listen to themselves talk

  108. will eventually taste the fruit of their lips.

  109. Eventually,

  110. we will experience the consequences

  111. of our speech.

  112. This is a warning.

  113. We need to be careful.

  114. We need to be very careful

  115. with our tongue

  116. because it is a powerful weapon.

  117. And it can do

  118. lasting damage.

  119. Many of us,

  120. we've got powerful handguns

  121. and rifles

  122. in our homes.

  123. You may like to hunt with yours.

  124. You may like to target practice.

  125. You may like to just have it.

  126. Just to look at.

  127. But regardless,

  128. when you handle that weapon,

  129. you are very, very careful.

  130. You don't play with it.

  131. It's not a toy.

  132. You handle it carefully

  133. and responsibly.

  134. Well, all of us,

  135. we've got a powerful tongue

  136. that can do more than

  137. kill the body.

  138. I want you to think

  139. about the power of the tongue,

  140. the power of our speech,

  141. the power of your words.

  142. With your words,

  143. with your words,

  144. you can kill someone's reputation

  145. just like that.

  146. With your words,

  147. you can kill the closeness

  148. of your family.

  149. Your relationships

  150. can be hurt.

  151. They can be crippled.

  152. With your words,

  153. you can kill the trust

  154. of a friend.

  155. You know,

  156. just think about it.

  157. Through the choice

  158. of your words,

  159. you could destroy

  160. the fellowship

  161. of this church

  162. this week.

  163. You could destroy

  164. the morale

  165. of the place

  166. where you work

  167. or on your team

  168. if you're playing a sport.

  169. God's word

  170. is warning us

  171. and we're going to look

  172. at several of these warnings

  173. over the course

  174. of the next couple of weeks.

  175. But God's word

  176. is warning us here

  177. we need to be careful.

  178. Our speech,

  179. our words

  180. have the power

  181. to destroy,

  182. to destroy people,

  183. to destroy relationships,

  184. to destroy community.

  185. just like we need,

  186. just like we do know

  187. how to handle

  188. our guns carefully,

  189. we need to learn

  190. to handle our words

  191. carefully.

  192. But words don't just

  193. have destructive power.

  194. That's not all

  195. that's said here

  196. in this verse,

  197. is it?

  198. On the positive side,

  199. words also have

  200. life-giving power.

  201. power.

  202. Our words

  203. can

  204. encourage.

  205. Our words

  206. can inspire.

  207. Our words

  208. can lift

  209. someone up

  210. in such a way

  211. as to change

  212. the course

  213. of their life.

  214. It may be

  215. that you

  216. have experienced

  217. that yourself.

  218. That what

  219. a parent

  220. or a grandparent

  221. or a teacher

  222. or coach

  223. or some friend

  224. said to you.

  225. Just let you know

  226. they cared,

  227. they noticed,

  228. that they saw

  229. potential in you.

  230. They encouraged you

  231. and it made a difference

  232. in your life.

  233. Think about this.

  234. Our words

  235. can always

  236. communicate

  237. love

  238. in any situation.

  239. They can

  240. communicate

  241. our love,

  242. our care.

  243. our concern.

  244. Have you ever

  245. thought about

  246. why our words

  247. are so powerful?

  248. You really can't

  249. argue with it.

  250. You really can't

  251. argue with the fact

  252. that words

  253. are so powerful.

  254. Why?

  255. Well,

  256. having the ability

  257. to communicate

  258. with words

  259. is one of the ways

  260. we're like God.

  261. Think about it.

  262. Our words,

  263. our being able

  264. to speak

  265. as we do,

  266. identifies us

  267. as human beings

  268. created in God's image.

  269. You know,

  270. Genesis 1

  271. tells us

  272. that God

  273. created this world

  274. by speaking

  275. it into existence.

  276. If you turn

  277. to Genesis 1

  278. and just read

  279. through the account

  280. of creation,

  281. every act

  282. of creation

  283. begins

  284. with this phrase,

  285. and God said,

  286. God spoke

  287. the world

  288. into creation.

  289. Well,

  290. as His image

  291. bearers,

  292. He has entrusted

  293. to us

  294. the power

  295. of speech.

  296. and we can be

  297. like Him

  298. in that we can

  299. use words

  300. in just a great

  301. and positive

  302. and helpful way.

  303. We can create

  304. trust.

  305. We can build

  306. relationships.

  307. But we're not

  308. always like God

  309. this way,

  310. are we?

  311. And when we're not,

  312. when we don't want

  313. to be like God,

  314. we can use our words

  315. to destroy trust,

  316. to break

  317. relationships.

  318. And you know

  319. what I'm talking about.

  320. You've experienced

  321. that to some degree,

  322. I'm sure.

  323. There's another reason

  324. why our words

  325. are so powerful.

  326. They can penetrate

  327. into a person's

  328. heart

  329. and soul.

  330. I want you to look

  331. at one more proverb

  332. this morning.

  333. It's chapter 12,

  334. verse 18.

  335. He writes,

  336. There is one

  337. whose rash words

  338. are like

  339. sword thrusts.

  340. There is one

  341. whose rash words

  342. are like

  343. thrusting a sword

  344. into someone.

  345. But the tongue

  346. of the wise

  347. brings healing.

  348. Some words

  349. are spoken

  350. like a sword

  351. thrusting

  352. into a person.

  353. Some words

  354. are spoken

  355. with the intention

  356. of penetrating

  357. all the way

  358. to a person's

  359. heart,

  360. to a person's

  361. spirit,

  362. and causing

  363. real pain.

  364. You know,

  365. you think about it.

  366. We call such words

  367. cutting words.

  368. We cut someone

  369. or we've been cut

  370. down by someone.

  371. some of those

  372. cutting words

  373. are sometimes

  374. spoken

  375. rashly,

  376. impulsively.

  377. Sometimes we

  378. just don't think.

  379. Sometimes such words

  380. are unfiltered.

  381. And we just

  382. don't,

  383. you know,

  384. we just don't

  385. really think

  386. about what

  387. we've done.

  388. But the person

  389. on the receiving end,

  390. they can't stop

  391. thinking about

  392. them

  393. because those

  394. words,

  395. our words,

  396. cut to their

  397. heart.

  398. They created

  399. a painful

  400. wound.

  401. They may have

  402. left a permanent

  403. scar.

  404. You know,

  405. this brings to

  406. mind,

  407. thinking like this,

  408. brings to mind

  409. that most

  410. untrue statement

  411. ever told a child.

  412. You know

  413. where I'm going.

  414. Sticks and stones

  415. may break my bones,

  416. but words

  417. will never harm me.

  418. Sticks and stones

  419. can break bones,

  420. but bones usually

  421. heal in six weeks,

  422. don't they?

  423. You get over it.

  424. Words can

  425. break

  426. a child's heart,

  427. crush

  428. a child's

  429. spirit,

  430. and it takes

  431. a whole lot longer

  432. than six weeks

  433. for that heart

  434. and spirit

  435. to heal

  436. if it ever

  437. does.

  438. I could have

  439. some teachers

  440. in this room

  441. to stand up

  442. right now

  443. and tell us

  444. stories about

  445. children in

  446. their classroom,

  447. children they

  448. teach,

  449. whose heart

  450. has been

  451. pierced,

  452. their spirit

  453. has been

  454. crushed,

  455. and they

  456. haven't gotten

  457. over it.

  458. it's seen

  459. in the way

  460. that they

  461. look,

  462. in the way

  463. that they

  464. interact with

  465. their peers,

  466. in the way

  467. that they just

  468. live life

  469. every day.

  470. Words

  471. can penetrate

  472. a person's

  473. heart

  474. and do

  475. damage

  476. that just

  477. can't ever

  478. be healed

  479. except by

  480. the grace

  481. of God.

  482. You know,

  483. you've heard

  484. the saying,

  485. time heals

  486. all wounds.

  487. Well,

  488. it doesn't.

  489. Time heals

  490. some things.

  491. Time makes

  492. a lot of

  493. things better.

  494. Time does

  495. not heal

  496. all

  497. wounds,

  498. including

  499. wounds

  500. that come

  501. about as

  502. a result

  503. of someone's

  504. words.

  505. Now,

  506. words can

  507. penetrate the

  508. heart and

  509. spirit in a

  510. good way.

  511. look at the

  512. second part

  513. of that

  514. proverb.

  515. But the

  516. tongue of

  517. the wise

  518. brings

  519. healing.

  520. The right

  521. kind of

  522. words can

  523. bring

  524. healing

  525. to some

  526. broken

  527. relationships.

  528. The right

  529. kind of

  530. words can

  531. offer hope

  532. in some

  533. hopeless

  534. situations.

  535. If you

  536. watch the

  537. Clemson

  538. Tiger

  539. National

  540. Championship

  541. celebration

  542. yesterday in

  543. Death Valley

  544. or were

  545. there in

  546. person,

  547. you heard

  548. several young

  549. men tell

  550. of the

  551. impact that

  552. a special

  553. coach,

  554. family member,

  555. or teammate

  556. has made

  557. on them.

  558. And one

  559. of the ways

  560. that these

  561. young men

  562. were helped

  563. by that

  564. special person

  565. was through

  566. that person's

  567. words.

  568. Words of

  569. encouragement.

  570. Words of

  571. affirmation.

  572. Words of

  573. correction

  574. sometimes.

  575. times.

  576. And one

  577. thing that

  578. impressed me

  579. is those

  580. big,

  581. strong

  582. men

  583. spoke

  584. about

  585. words of

  586. love

  587. that came

  588. from a

  589. coach

  590. or a

  591. parent

  592. or a

  593. teammate.

  594. Words

  595. make a

  596. difference.

  597. They can

  598. destroy a

  599. life.

  600. but they

  601. can also

  602. heal.

  603. They can

  604. also build

  605. up.

  606. The book

  607. of Proverbs

  608. goes to

  609. great lengths

  610. to make it

  611. clear that

  612. our words

  613. matter.

  614. Your words

  615. matter.

  616. My words

  617. matter.

  618. Words have

  619. the power of

  620. life and death.

  621. The word of

  622. God says.

  623. That's why we

  624. need to learn

  625. to be careful

  626. with our

  627. speech.

  628. We need to

  629. learn to

  630. watch our

  631. words.

  632. words.

  633. But there's

  634. one other

  635. thing I want

  636. to point out

  637. this morning

  638. in this

  639. first message

  640. about words

  641. that we

  642. need to

  643. hear and

  644. think about.

  645. This is

  646. something that

  647. every commentator

  648. I read

  649. pointed to.

  650. I'm going to

  651. call this the

  652. revealing nature

  653. of our

  654. words.

  655. words.

  656. All of us

  657. have problems

  658. with our

  659. words.

  660. If you

  661. don't think

  662. you do,

  663. you really

  664. are deceived.

  665. All of us

  666. have problems

  667. with our

  668. words.

  669. The book

  670. of James

  671. says that

  672. no human

  673. being can

  674. tame

  675. their tongue.

  676. Do you

  677. know why?

  678. The problem

  679. with our

  680. speech is

  681. not really

  682. a tongue

  683. problem.

  684. It's a

  685. heart

  686. problem.

  687. And Jesus

  688. pointed this

  689. out in no

  690. uncertain terms.

  691. This is

  692. what we need

  693. to see

  694. about the

  695. revealing nature

  696. of our

  697. words.

  698. Look at it.

  699. One verse,

  700. Luke 6,

  701. 45.

  702. Jesus said

  703. this,

  704. The good

  705. person out

  706. of the good

  707. treasure of

  708. his heart

  709. produces good.

  710. and the

  711. evil person

  712. out of his

  713. evil treasure

  714. produces evil.

  715. For out of

  716. the abundance

  717. of the heart

  718. his mouth

  719. speaks.

  720. Look at

  721. Chuck Swindoll's

  722. comments on

  723. that.

  724. He says,

  725. Just as a

  726. bucket draws

  727. water from

  728. a well,

  729. so the tongue

  730. dips down

  731. and draws up

  732. whatever fills

  733. the heart.

  734. If the

  735. source is

  736. clean,

  737. that is

  738. what the

  739. tongue

  740. communicates.

  741. If it is

  742. contaminated,

  743. again,

  744. the tongue

  745. will expose

  746. it.

  747. Hear what

  748. Jesus says.

  749. Our words

  750. are a

  751. reflection

  752. of the

  753. condition of

  754. our heart.

  755. If your

  756. words are

  757. filthy,

  758. it's because

  759. your heart's

  760. filthy.

  761. If your

  762. words are

  763. deceptive,

  764. it's because

  765. your heart

  766. is deceptive.

  767. But if

  768. your words

  769. are true

  770. and wise,

  771. that indicates

  772. that your

  773. heart is

  774. true and

  775. wise.

  776. So let's

  777. just look

  778. at ourselves

  779. now.

  780. What do

  781. your words,

  782. don't think

  783. about somebody

  784. else,

  785. what do

  786. your words

  787. reveal about

  788. the condition

  789. of your

  790. heart?

  791. do they

  792. reveal that

  793. Jesus Christ

  794. is at work?

  795. Now that

  796. doesn't mean

  797. that you've

  798. got a

  799. perfect heart

  800. that produces

  801. just perfect

  802. speech,

  803. but it

  804. will mean

  805. that your

  806. heart and

  807. words have

  808. the Spirit

  809. of God

  810. acting as

  811. a filter.

  812. Think about

  813. it.

  814. In the life

  815. of every

  816. Christian,

  817. the Spirit

  818. of God,

  819. the Spirit

  820. of Christ,

  821. the Holy

  822. Spirit.

  823. All three

  824. names are

  825. found in

  826. Scripture

  827. to describe

  828. the Holy

  829. Spirit.

  830. He is the

  831. Spirit of

  832. God.

  833. He's the

  834. Spirit of

  835. Christ.

  836. He's at

  837. work in

  838. the life

  839. of every

  840. Christian,

  841. and it's

  842. the Spirit

  843. of God

  844. who actually

  845. causes us

  846. to desire,

  847. to be able

  848. to develop,

  849. and then to

  850. demonstrate

  851. Christ-like

  852. character.

  853. See,

  854. the fruit of

  855. the Spirit,

  856. the Scripture

  857. says in

  858. Galatians 5,

  859. is love,

  860. and joy,

  861. and peace,

  862. and patience,

  863. and kindness,

  864. and goodness,

  865. and faithfulness,

  866. and gentleness,

  867. and self-control.

  868. That's the

  869. character of

  870. Jesus.

  871. There is a

  872. struggle in

  873. everyone,

  874. every Christian's

  875. life.

  876. There's a

  877. struggle about

  878. this,

  879. over this,

  880. because we

  881. all have sinful

  882. desires within

  883. us,

  884. and there's

  885. sinful temptations

  886. all around us.

  887. When we give

  888. in to those

  889. sinful desires

  890. and temptations,

  891. the Holy Spirit

  892. will convict us

  893. of our sin.

  894. He will

  895. inflict guilt

  896. on us.

  897. The Spirit

  898. of God

  899. will not

  900. allow a

  901. true child

  902. of God

  903. to be at

  904. peace with

  905. themselves

  906. or with

  907. God.

  908. When there

  909. is sin

  910. in our

  911. lives

  912. and we

  913. refuse to

  914. confess it,

  915. turn from it,

  916. and seek

  917. God's forgiveness.

  918. I want to ask

  919. you,

  920. is the Holy Spirit

  921. convicting you

  922. of anything

  923. right now?

  924. Not just your

  925. words,

  926. attitudes,

  927. some things

  928. you're involved

  929. in that you

  930. shouldn't be.

  931. I want you

  932. to hear this.

  933. If you're a

  934. Christian,

  935. and the Spirit

  936. of God

  937. is convicting

  938. you about

  939. some particular

  940. sin in your

  941. life,

  942. He is not

  943. going to

  944. let up

  945. until you

  946. give up

  947. and come back

  948. to the Lord.

  949. Now you need

  950. to be thankful

  951. for that

  952. because that

  953. is a sign

  954. that you're

  955. a Christian.

  956. If the Spirit

  957. of God

  958. does not

  959. live within

  960. you,

  961. if He

  962. does not

  963. convict you

  964. of sin,

  965. if He

  966. does not

  967. cause you

  968. to desire

  969. Christ-like

  970. character,

  971. if that is

  972. absent,

  973. you have no

  974. reason to

  975. think that

  976. you are a

  977. child of

  978. God.

  979. But if there

  980. is that

  981. struggle,

  982. there is that

  983. conviction,

  984. it's a sign

  985. that you're

  986. a child of

  987. God and

  988. you can rest

  989. assured God

  990. will never

  991. give up on

  992. His children.

  993. God loves

  994. us enough

  995. to discipline

  996. us.

  997. And God

  998. will do

  999. whatever it

  1000. takes to

  1001. bring us

  1002. back to

  1003. Himself.

  1004. If we're

  1005. His,

  1006. if we're

  1007. hard-headed,

  1008. if we won't

  1009. confess our

  1010. sins,

  1011. God will

  1012. make our

  1013. lives

  1014. miserable

  1015. He won't

  1016. let us

  1017. alone.

  1018. And His

  1019. purpose is

  1020. to get us

  1021. to wake

  1022. up,

  1023. confess our

  1024. sin,

  1025. turn from

  1026. it,

  1027. seek His

  1028. forgiveness,

  1029. and be

  1030. restored to

  1031. a right

  1032. relationship

  1033. with Him

  1034. and have

  1035. good fellowship

  1036. with Him.

  1037. Let me

  1038. ask you,

  1039. do your

  1040. words reveal

  1041. that your

  1042. heart

  1043. has been

  1044. changed by

  1045. the Lord,

  1046. is being

  1047. changed by

  1048. the Lord?

  1049. Does

  1050. your,

  1051. do your

  1052. words reveal

  1053. that your

  1054. heart is

  1055. the heart

  1056. of a

  1057. Christian?

  1058. Secondly,

  1059. do your

  1060. words reveal

  1061. that your

  1062. heart has

  1063. never been

  1064. changed,

  1065. that it's

  1066. just cold,

  1067. there's some

  1068. indifference?

  1069. it doesn't

  1070. bother you,

  1071. the words

  1072. that you

  1073. say.

  1074. I want you

  1075. to think

  1076. about this.

  1077. If your

  1078. words are

  1079. mostly selfish,

  1080. hateful,

  1081. worldly,

  1082. deceptive,

  1083. and hurtful

  1084. of others,

  1085. that's an

  1086. indication that

  1087. you've got a

  1088. sinful,

  1089. unchanged

  1090. heart.

  1091. And I want

  1092. you to wake

  1093. up to that.

  1094. You know,

  1095. every one of

  1096. us who are

  1097. Christians,

  1098. there are

  1099. times when

  1100. we do

  1101. speak selfishly,

  1102. hatefully,

  1103. there's times

  1104. when we do

  1105. hurt other

  1106. people.

  1107. But that's

  1108. not the

  1109. normal pattern

  1110. of our

  1111. lives.

  1112. That's not

  1113. just who

  1114. we are,

  1115. because the

  1116. Spirit of

  1117. God won't

  1118. let us be.

  1119. But if

  1120. that's who

  1121. you are,

  1122. your greatest

  1123. need is not

  1124. to clean up

  1125. your speech.

  1126. Your greatest

  1127. need is to

  1128. be changed

  1129. by God,

  1130. to let Him

  1131. clean up

  1132. your heart,

  1133. and that'll

  1134. clean up your

  1135. speech.

  1136. But the only

  1137. way that's

  1138. going to

  1139. happen is

  1140. if you will

  1141. humbly and

  1142. wholeheartedly

  1143. ask God to

  1144. save you,

  1145. and change

  1146. you this

  1147. way.

  1148. And if that's

  1149. your desire,

  1150. right now,

  1151. confess your

  1152. sin.

  1153. Ask God to

  1154. help you to

  1155. truly turn

  1156. from it.

  1157. Express to

  1158. God your

  1159. sorrow for

  1160. the way that

  1161. you have

  1162. lived and

  1163. dishonored and

  1164. displeased

  1165. Him.

  1166. Trust that

  1167. when Jesus

  1168. died on the

  1169. cross, He

  1170. actually paid

  1171. the penalty

  1172. for your

  1173. sins.

  1174. He took

  1175. your punishment.

  1176. Call upon

  1177. Him to save

  1178. you now.

  1179. Surrender

  1180. control of

  1181. your life

  1182. to Him.

  1183. He's the

  1184. Lord Jesus

  1185. Christ.

  1186. God cares

  1187. about the

  1188. way we use

  1189. our words

  1190. because they're

  1191. a gift from

  1192. Him, and

  1193. they are so

  1194. powerful.

  1195. That's why we

  1196. need to care

  1197. about our

  1198. words as

  1199. well.

  1200. We need to

  1201. care about

  1202. our words

  1203. because Jesus

  1204. said that our

  1205. words will be

  1206. a part of the

  1207. criteria for

  1208. judgment,

  1209. judgment at

  1210. the end of

  1211. our lives.

  1212. And I

  1213. want to

  1214. conclude,

  1215. this is it,

  1216. with these

  1217. most sobering

  1218. words of

  1219. Jesus about

  1220. our words.

  1221. Look at it,

  1222. Matthew 12.

  1223. Jesus said,

  1224. I tell you,

  1225. on the day of

  1226. judgment,

  1227. people will

  1228. give account

  1229. for every

  1230. careless word

  1231. they speak.

  1232. For by your

  1233. words, you will

  1234. be justified.

  1235. and by your

  1236. words, you

  1237. will be

  1238. condemned.

  1239. Let's pray

  1240. together.

  1241. Father,

  1242. Father, help

  1243. us all this

  1244. morning to see

  1245. the seriousness

  1246. of our

  1247. speech.

  1248. Father, help

  1249. us to see

  1250. the power of

  1251. our words.

  1252. Father, help

  1253. us to admit

  1254. that our

  1255. words are

  1256. normal

  1257. speech is

  1258. an indication

  1259. of what's

  1260. in our

  1261. heart.

  1262. Show us,

  1263. Father, how we

  1264. should respond

  1265. to you now.

  1266. Father, so

  1267. work to

  1268. call people in

  1269. this room who

  1270. are not

  1271. Christians to

  1272. faith in

  1273. Jesus now.

  1274. We pray.

  1275. Father, call

  1276. Christians who

  1277. have become

  1278. indifferent,

  1279. uncooperative

  1280. to your

  1281. indwelling

  1282. spirit.

  1283. And it

  1284. comes, it's

  1285. come out in

  1286. their words.

  1287. Help them to

  1288. see it's more

  1289. than the speech

  1290. problem, it's a

  1291. heart problem.

  1292. Help that man

  1293. or woman or

  1294. young person

  1295. your God, right

  1296. now, to

  1297. confess their

  1298. sin, to

  1299. humble themselves

  1300. before you

  1301. and toward

  1302. anyone they

  1303. have wronged.

  1304. Help them to

  1305. seek your

  1306. forgiveness.

  1307. Help them to

  1308. seek that other

  1309. person's

  1310. forgiveness.

  1311. Dear God, do

  1312. heart work

  1313. in all of our

  1314. lives, not

  1315. just this

  1316. moment, but

  1317. every day.

  1318. So that our

  1319. speech will

  1320. do more

  1321. building up

  1322. than tearing

  1323. down.

  1324. And in an

  1325. attitude of

  1326. prayer, you

  1327. listen to the

  1328. Lord, you

  1329. respond to

  1330. Him, do

  1331. what He's

  1332. telling you to

  1333. do.

  1334. If I could

  1335. pray with you

  1336. about this,

  1337. help you in

  1338. any way, I'll

  1339. be here at the

  1340. front.

  1341. What's important

  1342. is you listen to

  1343. the Lord and

  1344. respond to Him.
