  1. You know, one of the most cherished freedoms that we have in this country is the freedom of speech.

  2. You know it's part of our Constitution, the First Amendment.

  3. A part of the First Amendment goes like this.

  4. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion

  5. or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

  6. or abridging the freedom of speech.

  7. And that goes on.

  8. And it does not have abridging the freedom of speech underlined.

  9. I did that to emphasize this is a part of the Constitution of the United States of America.

  10. It is one of our most cherished rights.

  11. No one can stop us from going out there on the street

  12. and just telling everybody what we think and how we feel.

  13. We can make fools of ourselves, and many people do, with that freedom.

  14. But as Christians, we need to remember that we live under a higher authority than that Constitution.

  15. Jesus made it clear to His followers,

  16. If you're going to follow me, you've got to surrender not only your rights, but your life.

  17. Look at how Jesus said it in Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  18. And He said to all, all who were there,

  19. If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

  20. Taking up his cross daily, that phrase is talking about dying to self.

  21. A cross is an instrument of death.

  22. So Jesus said, if you want to be my disciple, if you want to follow me,

  23. then you've got to deny yourself.

  24. It can't be about you.

  25. You know, Jesus is one who made it very, very clear.

  26. To be my follower, you're going to be about me.

  27. You're going to be about the Father's will.

  28. Or you won't be my disciple.

  29. You've got to deny yourself, take up your cross daily, die daily, and follow me.

  30. He said something similar, but He said a lot more about it in Luke chapter 14, beginning in verse 25.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  31. I want to come to the end of that section and look at what Jesus said in verse 33.

  32. Again, speaking to the crowds, wanting everyone to be clear.

  33. This is what's involved.

  34. You're going to be my disciple.

  35. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

  36. So Jesus is telling us very clearly, if you want to be mine, if you want to be a Christian,

  37. then you've got to make a total commitment of your life.

  38. You're holding nothing back.

  39. You've got to make a total commitment of your life to live under my authority.

  40. And that includes even our speech.

  41. We as Christians, living under the authority of Jesus Christ, we do not have the right to just say whatever we think, whatever we feel.

  42. Now, as children of God, God has put His Spirit in us.

  43. And He so works in us to give us the right kinds of desires.

  44. The Spirit of God works in us to motivate us to want to live a life that pleases Him, that surrenders to the authority of Jesus.

  45. Excuse me.

  46. I love the way Paul put it in Philippians chapter 2, verses 12 and 13.

    Philippians 2:12

  47. Look at it with me.

  48. He's writing to Christians.

  49. Excuse me.

  50. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence, but much more in my absence,

  51. work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

  52. For it is God who works in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

  53. Paul is not telling them to work for your salvation.

  54. He's writing to people who trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior by faith.

  55. They're already Christians.

  56. He's telling them to work out their faith.

  57. Work out your salvation.

  58. Put what you believe into practice.

  59. In fear and trembling.

  60. Don't be casual.

  61. Don't be flippant.

  62. Be serious.

  63. Reverential.

  64. Before God even.

  65. But then he reminds them, if you're a Christian, as you work out your salvation,

  66. this is not something you've got to force yourself to do.

  67. Because the Spirit of God, we're living in you, will cause you to want to.

  68. And as you want to, He will enable you to actually develop Christian character.

  69. He will enable you to overcome the sinful habits and to start living like a Christian in the various aspects of our lives.

  70. You know that if you're a Christian from personal experience.

  71. None of us in this room are perfect.

  72. We're not where we would like to be as Christians.

  73. But if you look back over what?

  74. Ten years?

  75. Five years?

  76. One year?

  77. You can see how God has worked in you developing that Christ-like character.

  78. You can see some progress has been made.

  79. If you can't, you need to question what you call salvation.

  80. Because Paul says it real clearly here.

  81. God works in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

  82. So we should see evidence in our lives of how God has worked in us like that

  83. to cause us to live a life that pleases Him.

  84. Or to be living a life that pleases Him.

  85. That'll include our words.

  86. You see where I'm going.

  87. Proverbs has some memorable ways of describing how the speech of God's people should stand out

  88. as being different from ungodly people.

  89. Look at this one from Proverbs 29 verse 11.

    Proverbs 29:11

  90. A fool gives full vent to his spirit,

  91. but a wise man quietly holds it back.

  92. A fool gives full vent to his spirit.

  93. A fool just lets you know what all's inside.

  94. No restraint.

  95. No filter.

  96. But the wise man,

  97. he holds it back.

  98. He knows what he should say and should not say.

  99. I want you to listen real carefully to what I'm going to say

  100. because this is not a political statement in any way.

  101. The people who are out in protests,

  102. setting fires to cars,

  103. screaming all kinds of profane things

  104. about our new president,

  105. these people are fools

  106. because they are giving full vent

  107. to their spirit.

  108. They are not fools because they don't like Donald Trump.

  109. They are not fools because they want to protest,

  110. because they disagree or say they disagree.

  111. What the Word of God says is

  112. they are acting like fools

  113. by the way that they are screaming and shouting

  114. and just giving full vent to their rage and disagreement.

  115. A wise liberal,

  116. a wise person,

  117. doesn't even have to be a Christian,

  118. a wise person who despises Donald Trump,

  119. who is opposed to everything he stands for,

  120. a wise person

  121. will speak that opposition

  122. in a timely,

  123. in a careful,

  124. in a deliberate kind of way,

  125. they'll discuss,

  126. they'll debate,

  127. they'll be civil about it.

  128. As we're going to get into the Scripture,

  129. not just today but in the future,

  130. it's a fool

  131. who just lets whatever's in out

  132. explodes and erupts on everybody around them.

  133. And sometimes,

  134. let's just be honest,

  135. not everybody in this room,

  136. but sometimes most of us,

  137. we act like fools, don't we?

  138. We just let it out.

  139. But wisdom,

  140. we hold it back.

  141. we think before we speak.

  142. We weigh our words.

  143. We can speak the truth

  144. as we understand it.

  145. That is totally the opposite

  146. of what a friend or another person believes,

  147. but we just need to do it

  148. in the right way,

  149. with the right attitude,

  150. with the right spirit.

  151. The book of James

  152. is the Proverbs of the New Testament.

  153. He describes the danger

  154. of an unbridled tongue

  155. in terms of a wildfire.

  156. Look in James 3, verse 5.

    James 3:5

  157. How great a forest

  158. is set ablaze

  159. by such a small fire.

  160. Our words matter.

  161. However they come out,

  162. wherever they come out,

  163. our words matter

  164. when we have personal

  165. one-on-one conversations.

  166. Our words matter

  167. when we speak to one another

  168. on the telephone.

  169. When we communicate

  170. by email or text or tweet.

  171. Words matter

  172. that you put on social media.

  173. It's no different.

  174. It's words of yours

  175. just in print.

  176. Words matter.

  177. Here's what we need to understand.

  178. A lot of the division,

  179. the hostility,

  180. the bad relationships

  181. in our homes,

  182. at work,

  183. in churches,

  184. in schools,

  185. in government,

  186. in our nation,

  187. can be traced

  188. to people's unbridled tongue.

  189. To people

  190. not thinking

  191. before they speak.

  192. People not speaking

  193. in a timely,

  194. appropriate,

  195. controlled

  196. kind of way.

  197. Part of the problem,

  198. we just don't think

  199. seriously enough

  200. about our speech.

  201. you know,

  202. we know,

  203. we know,

  204. we know that

  205. stealing is bad.

  206. We know that

  207. attacking someone

  208. and beating them up,

  209. killing someone

  210. is bad.

  211. We need to also understand

  212. that we can beat people up,

  213. we can hurt people,

  214. we can maim

  215. people

  216. in various ways

  217. with our words.

  218. Let me make a

  219. clarification here.

  220. If you're mad at me,

  221. I'd much rather

  222. you just tell me,

  223. even cuss me out

  224. than try to beat me up

  225. or shoot me,

  226. okay?

  227. There is a big difference

  228. in the two.

  229. So don't misunderstand.

  230. Last week,

  231. we began looking

  232. at why we need

  233. to be serious

  234. about our speech.

  235. We looked at the power

  236. of our words,

  237. we looked at the revealing

  238. nature of our words.

  239. Today,

  240. I want us to look

  241. at the negative side

  242. of our speech

  243. and focus on the wrong

  244. use of words.

  245. We're going to start that.

  246. What I want to look at today

  247. is the twin towers

  248. of destructive speech,

  249. gossip and slander.

  250. These words are often

  251. used synonymously.

  252. We may just use,

  253. talk about gossip

  254. and slander,

  255. we're basically talking

  256. about the same thing.

  257. Sometimes,

  258. it's really that way

  259. in the Bible.

  260. But sometimes,

  261. they are used

  262. to convey

  263. one particular difference

  264. that I want to point out.

  265. Slander is hurtful speech

  266. about a person

  267. that's not true.

  268. Slander's not true.

  269. Slander is repeating things

  270. about someone

  271. that is false.

  272. It involves making

  273. false charges

  274. against a person

  275. that defames

  276. that person,

  277. their character,

  278. their reputation.

  279. If you went out

  280. from here today,

  281. this week,

  282. and you told people

  283. that I beat my wife,

  284. you would be making

  285. slanderous charges

  286. against me.

  287. You would have

  288. slandered me

  289. and defamed my character.

  290. You may be thinking

  291. to yourself,

  292. how do I know

  293. that's not true?

  294. I'm alive,

  295. aren't I?

  296. That's how you know that.

  297. Lisa can shoot a pistol.

  298. In fact,

  299. not too long ago,

  300. she shot the actual

  301. center out

  302. of the target.

  303. I don't mean

  304. she shot the middle

  305. of the target,

  306. bullseye one time.

  307. She shot the bullseye

  308. so many times,

  309. it tore up the paper

  310. in the middle.

  311. I am an idiot

  312. about some things,

  313. but I'm not going

  314. to mess with her.

  315. Do you know how

  316. Proverbs describes

  317. a slanderer?

  318. Look at it.

  319. Proverbs 10.

  320. Whoever utters slander

  321. is a fool.

  322. You can't get any

  323. simpler than that,

  324. can you?

  325. Now why would such

  326. a person be called

  327. a fool?

  328. Because they know

  329. what they're saying

  330. is not true.

  331. If you spread slander,

  332. you're talking about

  333. things you know

  334. is not true

  335. about someone,

  336. trying to defame them,

  337. tear up their reputation,

  338. you're a fool

  339. because you may

  340. get found out.

  341. The truth may

  342. come forward,

  343. eventually it will.

  344. That's what

  345. Proverbs is talking about.

  346. Anyone who

  347. intentionally tries

  348. to hurt another

  349. person's reputation

  350. by spreading slander

  351. is a fool.

  352. Now let's look

  353. at the word gossip.

  354. It is sometimes

  355. defined differently.

  356. Gossip is hurtful

  357. speech about a person

  358. that may or may

  359. not be true.

  360. Gossip,

  361. it may be the real

  362. deal,

  363. or it may not be.

  364. Gossip involves

  365. repeating personal,

  366. private information

  367. about someone

  368. that should not

  369. be repeated.

  370. Whether it's true

  371. or not,

  372. it's just such

  373. of a personal

  374. and private matter

  375. it does not need

  376. to be repeated.

  377. Proverbs reveals

  378. the kind of damage

  379. that gossip does.

  380. First,

  381. a gossip betrays

  382. a confidence,

  383. but a trustworthy

  384. person keeps a secret.

  385. That's from the NIV.

  386. The ESV,

  387. English Standard Version,

  388. uses the word slander

  389. there instead of gossip,

  390. which shows how

  391. these two words

  392. are closely related

  393. a lot of times

  394. in Scripture.

  395. Proverbs also says,

  396. gossip separates

  397. close friends.

  398. These two verses,

  399. look at them.

  400. They reveal the kind

  401. of damage that gossip

  402. can do.

  403. But for some reason,

  404. I mean, gossip

  405. can destroy a relationship,

  406. destroy trust.

  407. But for some reason,

  408. many people,

  409. maybe most people,

  410. don't see any harm,

  411. don't see any real harm

  412. in gossip.

  413. In fact,

  414. we all do it sometimes,

  415. don't we?

  416. There may be a few people

  417. here that

  418. you really have worked on it,

  419. you understand the truth

  420. about it,

  421. and you don't.

  422. But most of us,

  423. even if we know better,

  424. even if we most of the time

  425. do better,

  426. we backslide.

  427. And we usually introduce

  428. our gossip

  429. in innocent-sounding ways,

  430. like,

  431. have you heard?

  432. Did you know?

  433. You ever said this?

  434. I don't know if it's true,

  435. but,

  436. you go ahead and tell it.

  437. Here's one,

  438. this will get most of us.

  439. I probably shouldn't say this,

  440. but.

  441. And here,

  442. we're all good southerners,

  443. aren't we?

  444. Most of us.

  445. And we know

  446. that if we first say,

  447. bless his heart,

  448. we can say whatever

  449. we want to do,

  450. whatever we want to say.

  451. Bless his heart,

  452. he's just a sorry writer.

  453. Bless his heart,

  454. Mike's just an idiot.

  455. You know that?

  456. We do those things.

  457. I want you to think.

  458. We do those things.

  459. But our gossip

  460. serves no good purpose.

  461. It really exposes

  462. us,

  463. when we repeat it,

  464. as being troublemakers,

  465. to some degree.

  466. It really says

  467. that we don't care

  468. about the person

  469. that we're talking about.

  470. And rest assured,

  471. if you know someone

  472. who's just a gossip,

  473. and they're always

  474. telling you about somebody

  475. or wanting to tell you

  476. about somebody,

  477. they're talking about you

  478. when you're not there.

  479. It's just in their makeup.

  480. Why are we so quick

  481. to repeat or listen to gossip?

  482. Bottom line is,

  483. we like it.

  484. And the book of Proverbs

  485. points it out.

  486. Look at it.

  487. The words of a whisperer

  488. somebody who talks

  489. about somebody

  490. behind their back.

  491. Somebody who doesn't

  492. want other people

  493. to know what they're saying.

  494. The words of a whisperer

  495. are like delicious morsels.

  496. They go down

  497. to the inner parts

  498. of the body.

  499. Let's all admit it.

  500. There are times

  501. we like gossip.

  502. We like to hear it

  503. or we like to repeat it

  504. or both.

  505. The negative information,

  506. the juicy things

  507. about people.

  508. The reason is,

  509. we have a fallen,

  510. sinful nature.

  511. And that fallen,

  512. sinful human nature

  513. considers gossip

  514. delicious morsels.

  515. We don't even have

  516. to put ketchup on it,

  517. do we?

  518. We can just say it.

  519. It's good by itself.

  520. Now, even though gossip

  521. is good to us,

  522. it's pleasurable to us,

  523. it's not good to God.

  524. Proverbs says it tastes good to us,

  525. but it sickens God.

  526. He hates such speech.

  527. I do not have it in my,

  528. on the outline,

  529. but I want you to look

  530. at Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  531. If you want to turn to it,

  532. I'm going to read it.

  533. In Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  534. Paul is,

  535. okay,

  536. we do have good,

  537. I'm going to quit talking

  538. about those guys

  539. in the balcony.

  540. Tim did a good job today.

  541. Thank you very much.

  542. Paul is writing about

  543. the sinfulness

  544. of humanity.

  545. He goes into great detail

  546. beginning in Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1:18

  547. verse 18,

  548. about how

  549. even people who don't

  550. have the law of God,

  551. Jews,

  552. he's talking about then,

  553. God reveals himself

  554. to everybody

  555. in various ways,

  556. through nature,

  557. various ways,

  558. but everybody rejects

  559. what God does

  560. reveal about himself.

  561. We sin.

  562. We reject,

  563. we reject the truth

  564. about God.

  565. We reject his truth,

  566. period.

  567. And the more we do that,

  568. the more God just says,

  569. okay.

  570. He just gives us over

  571. to that sinful mind

  572. and way of life.

  573. And in verse 21,

  574. 29,

  575. here's how Paul describes

  576. sinful humanity.

  577. They were filled

  578. with all manner

  579. of unrighteousness,

  580. evil,

  581. covetousness,

  582. or greed,

  583. malice.

  584. They are full of envy,

  585. murder,

  586. strife,

  587. deceit,

  588. maliciousness,

  589. and look what's

  590. in this list.

  591. They are gossips,

  592. slanderers,

  593. haters of God.

  594. I know gossip

  595. and slander

  596. is wrong,

  597. it's sinful.

  598. But without

  599. reading it like this,

  600. I would never

  601. categorize it

  602. in the same list

  603. as haters of God

  604. and murder.

  605. But it's there

  606. in God's word

  607. because it's sin,

  608. because God hates it,

  609. because God will punish

  610. those whose lives

  611. are characterized

  612. in any kind

  613. of sinful way.

  614. We need to ask God

  615. if we're Christians,

  616. and that is something

  617. we struggle with.

  618. We know it's wrong,

  619. we don't want to do it,

  620. but we struggle with it.

  621. We need to ask God

  622. to help us

  623. to change our taste buds.

  624. Let's ask Him

  625. to start now.

  626. We need to set up

  627. some guards

  628. for ourself

  629. to avoid

  630. repeating gossip

  631. and slander.

  632. Here's one way

  633. to evaluate

  634. whether we ought

  635. to pass on

  636. certain information,

  637. whether it's

  638. gossip or slander.

  639. When you hear something,

  640. find out something,

  641. and you're tempted

  642. to pass it on,

  643. ask these questions

  644. of yourself.

  645. Is what I'm about

  646. to say true?

  647. Is what I have heard,

  648. and I want to say,

  649. is it true?

  650. If it's not,

  651. or you don't know,

  652. don't say it.

  653. If you don't know,

  654. forget it,

  655. drop it.

  656. Number two,

  657. is what I'm about

  658. to say necessary?

  659. If it's true,

  660. ask next,

  661. is it necessary?

  662. If you think it is,

  663. explain to yourself

  664. why.

  665. How will it help

  666. the person

  667. I'm going to talk about?

  668. How will it help

  669. the situation?

  670. If you think it's true,

  671. or if you know it's true,

  672. think it's necessary,

  673. third question,

  674. is what I'm about

  675. to say motivated

  676. by love?

  677. Would you want

  678. that person

  679. to say something

  680. similar about you?

  681. Can you fulfill

  682. the second great commandment,

  683. love your neighbor

  684. as yourself,

  685. by repeating that?

  686. The next time

  687. you're faced

  688. with a decision

  689. about repeating

  690. information about someone,

  691. stop and ask

  692. these three questions.

  693. Is it true?

  694. Is it necessary?

  695. Is repeating it

  696. an expression of love?

  697. I need to do that.

  698. And I'm going to guess

  699. that you do too.

  700. Most of us anyway.

  701. Now there are some things

  702. that are not pleasant

  703. that do need to be

  704. passed on.

  705. If a young girl

  706. came to you

  707. and explains to you

  708. very seriously,

  709. confidentially,

  710. that Mr. Jones

  711. has molested her,

  712. should you keep

  713. that to yourself?

  714. Let's ask

  715. these three questions.

  716. Is the information

  717. true?

  718. Well, if you don't

  719. have any reason

  720. to think it's not,

  721. something like that,

  722. you've got to

  723. accept it's true.

  724. Is it necessary

  725. to say something?

  726. Yes.

  727. Morally

  728. and legally.

  729. You cannot let

  730. something like that go.

  731. A lot of times

  732. it does

  733. get let go.

  734. I didn't think

  735. about this

  736. in the first service

  737. but I'm going to

  738. say it here.

  739. That's something

  740. we will not let go.

  741. We will not sleep

  742. under the floor,

  743. under the table

  744. in any shape,

  745. form or fashion.

  746. We take all

  747. that kind of stuff

  748. seriously.

  749. And if you know

  750. somebody is a member

  751. of our church,

  752. has joined our church

  753. and it appears

  754. that they want

  755. to work with our

  756. preschool or children

  757. or youth,

  758. but you know

  759. they're a sex offender.

  760. You tell me

  761. and you tell me

  762. before the sun

  763. goes down today,

  764. that is not gossip.

  765. That is right.

  766. That will protect

  767. our children.

  768. That person can be

  769. forgiven and made

  770. right with God.

  771. That person is not

  772. going to be given

  773. a chance to work

  774. with children

  775. in this church.

  776. That is what's right.

  777. There's times

  778. it's not gossip

  779. that which is true

  780. that would be hurtful.

  781. It's necessary

  782. and it's loving

  783. to protect children.

  784. It is loving,

  785. it is right

  786. to protect children.

  787. Now before we

  788. leave this subject

  789. we need to understand

  790. that the problem

  791. with gossip and slander

  792. is not limited

  793. to just repeating it.

  794. Listening and tolerating it

  795. make us involved

  796. in the evil.

  797. We need to be careful

  798. what we listen to,

  799. what we sort of feed on.

  800. Ray Ortlund

  801. is a pastor

  802. who wrote about

  803. this passage,

  804. wrote a book,

  805. commentary.

  806. He describes

  807. the person

  808. who habitually listens

  809. to gossip

  810. and slander

  811. like this.

  812. Look at it.

  813. A person who listens.

  814. A person can become

  815. a garbage collector.

  816. Someone in the group

  817. becomes the one

  818. to whom,

  819. look at this,

  820. disgruntled people go

  821. because that person

  822. will listen

  823. and sympathize

  824. and be a shoulder

  825. to cry on

  826. and a rallying point

  827. for complaints

  828. and a hero

  829. to those

  830. with hurt feelings.

  831. And that listener

  832. becomes a bigger problem

  833. in the group

  834. than the talkers.

  835. He's not talking

  836. about someone

  837. who has just

  838. a compassionate heart,

  839. who's an encourager,

  840. a sympathizer.

  841. He's not talking

  842. about someone

  843. who just tries

  844. to be a friend

  845. and a helper

  846. to people who are hurting.

  847. Look at what

  848. he's saying there.

  849. He's talking

  850. about someone

  851. who's just like

  852. a magnet

  853. to the negative,

  854. critical,

  855. whining,

  856. complaining,

  857. gossiping people

  858. around them.

  859. Don't be that person.

  860. Ask God

  861. to help you

  862. to change

  863. if you are

  864. that person.

  865. We need to

  866. always be on guard

  867. that we don't

  868. become this kind

  869. of garbage collectors.

  870. We need to learn

  871. to just

  872. walk away

  873. from people

  874. if necessary.

  875. Don't show

  876. interest.

  877. Maybe even just say,

  878. I don't want to hear it.

  879. It's better

  880. to offend somebody

  881. by saying to them,

  882. I don't want to hear it,

  883. than to offend God

  884. by listening to it

  885. when you know

  886. you shouldn't.

  887. There are times

  888. when we all

  889. just need to be

  890. more confrontational.

  891. just say

  892. to somebody,

  893. I don't want

  894. to hear it.

  895. Or

  896. say,

  897. you know,

  898. before you talk

  899. about that person,

  900. I'll go with you.

  901. Let's go to that person.

  902. Let's go to that person

  903. and ask them

  904. what you're saying.

  905. Is it true?

  906. That'll close

  907. the mouths

  908. of a lot of people.

  909. But gossip

  910. and slander,

  911. they're serious

  912. problems.

  913. There's serious

  914. problems

  915. in many people's lives,

  916. even some Christians.

  917. Always remember

  918. that gossip,

  919. slander,

  920. it only hurts people.

  921. It doesn't serve

  922. any good purpose.

  923. We need to learn

  924. to stop

  925. listening to it.

  926. Stop

  927. repeating it.

  928. Any kind of

  929. harmful speech.

  930. Our words

  931. matter.

  932. They're going to matter

  933. on the day

  934. of judgment.

  935. I want to repeat

  936. the way I closed

  937. last week

  938. with what Jesus

  939. said about

  940. our words being

  941. one of the criteria

  942. for judgment

  943. at the end

  944. of our lives.

  945. This is serious.

  946. Something we need

  947. to take to heart.

  948. So read it with you.

  949. Jesus said,

  950. I tell you,

  951. on the day of judgment,

  952. people will give

  953. account for every

  954. careless word

  955. they speak.

  956. For by your words

  957. you will be justified.

  958. And by your words

  959. you will be condemned.

  960. That's a sobering statement

  961. that we need to take

  962. to heart.

  963. Would you pray with me now?

  964. Dear God,

  965. Dear God,

  966. convict us

  967. of the seriousness

  968. of our words.

  969. Father, right now,

  970. convict us

  971. if we are guilty

  972. of being gossipers

  973. or slanderers.

  974. and if we are,

  975. help us to truly

  976. confess it to you

  977. and repent of it

  978. and seek your forgiveness.

  979. Help us, dear God,

  980. to start being on guard

  981. and not listening to it

  982. or repeating it.

  983. Dear God,

  984. help us to understand

  985. that if we're Christians,

  986. by doing this

  987. or not doing that,

  988. that's not what saves us.

  989. Help us all

  990. to understand

  991. that salvation

  992. is a gift

  993. of your grace,

  994. your undeserved

  995. love and favor

  996. that we receive

  997. through faith in Jesus

  998. plus nothing else.

  999. Dear God,

  1000. help us to understand

  1001. that we're forgiven

  1002. because Jesus

  1003. paid the penalty

  1004. for our sins.

  1005. Help us to see

  1006. that if we truly

  1007. are believers

  1008. in Jesus,

  1009. then because your spirit

  1010. is in us,

  1011. we will have

  1012. the right kind

  1013. of desires.

  1014. We won't always

  1015. act on them,

1016. but you won't let us

  1017. just live

  1018. like unbelievers.

  1019. help us.

  1020. Help us to see,

  1021. dear God,

  1022. when it comes

  1023. to the matters

  1024. of our speech,

  1025. it's your spirit

  1026. who gives us

  1027. the desire

  1028. to be obedient

  1029. in these ways.

  1030. Help us,

  1031. dear God,

  1032. to seek

  1033. your help

  1034. to do it,

  1035. to make the changes

  1036. we need to make.

  1037. Lord,

  1038. if there are people

  1039. in this room

  1040. who are not Christians

  1041. and they've been convicted

  1042. this morning

  1043. of this particular sin

  1044. in their life,

  1045. help them to understand

  1046. that the way

  1047. they need to respond

1048. is to come to you

  1049. and just confess,

  1050. I am a sinner.

  1051. I am separated

1052. from you by my sin.

  1053. Help that man

  1054. or woman

  1055. or young person

1056. to turn from their sin,

  1057. change their mind

  1058. about it,

  1059. seek your help

  1060. to stop it.

  1061. Help them to see,

  1062. to understand,

  1063. to believe

  1064. that when Jesus

  1065. died on that cross,

  1066. He actually took

  1067. the punishment

  1068. that they deserve.

  1069. So help them

  1070. to trust Jesus

  1071. and call upon Him

  1072. to be their Savior.

  1073. Help them to truly

  1074. surrender their lives

  1075. to Him,

  1076. to His authority

  1077. in every aspect

  1078. of their lives.

  1079. Help all of us,

  1080. dear God,

  1081. as Christians

  1082. to renew that commitment

  1083. if we need to

  1084. this morning.

1085. In an attitude of prayer,

1086. you just listen to the Lord

  1087. and respond to Him

  1088. as He speaks.

1089. I'd be happy to pray

1090. with you here at the front.

  1091. That would be helpful

  1092. and meaningful to you.

1093. I would like to do that.

  1094. But the important thing

1095. is that you listen to God

  1096. and obey Him

  1097. during this time.
