  1. that scares you.

  2. Could be some of you have been to the doctor

  3. and what you heard was frightening.

  4. It could be some of you,

  5. when you got your report card recently,

  6. what you saw was scary

  7. because you knew what kind of trouble you'd be in.

  8. For some, what has scared you lately

  9. is finding out what the experts say

  10. you need to save for your children's education

  11. or for your retirement.

  12. If you've been here the past couple of weeks,

  13. you may have been scared like me

  14. at something that Jesus said about our words.

  15. Look at it with me.

  16. It comes from Luke chapter 6, verse 45.

    Luke 6:45

  17. He said,

  18. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart

  19. produces good,

  20. and the evil person out of his evil treasure

  21. produces evil.

  22. For out of the abundance of the heart,

  23. his mouth speaks.

  24. Think about that.

  25. Jesus said,

  26. from out of the abundance of our heart,

  27. our mouth speaks.

  28. Isn't it scary to think that some of the things

  29. that come out of your mouth

  30. is an indication of what's in your heart?

  31. You know, we saw, what, a couple of weeks ago,

  32. our speech reveals who we really are deep down.

  33. If our words are filthy,

  34. it means our heart's filthy.

  35. If our words are deceptive,

  36. it means we've got a deceptive heart.

  37. But if our words are true and wise,

  38. that says something about our heart as well.

  39. We're going to continue our study

  40. of the wrong use of words this morning.

  41. We're in the book of Proverbs.

  42. And what I want us to notice,

  43. think about,

  44. not just notice, but really think about,

  45. as we look at

  46. the various forms of speech,

  47. the wrong use of words.

  48. Like last week, it was gossip and slander.

  49. We're going to look at some more today.

  50. If you have a problem with such,

  51. that's not really a speech problem.

  52. That's a heart problem.

  53. And that's why those words of Jesus scare me.

  54. Well, some of the things that come out of my mouth,

  55. it's not a tongue problem.

  56. It's much deeper than that.

  57. Now, I want to qualify that statement a little bit.

  58. If a person is truly a child of God,

  59. then God is working in their life

  60. to develop Christ-like character.

  61. I mean, that's Romans chapter 8, 29.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  62. God works in all of His children,

  63. conforming us to the image of His Son.

  64. That's what He does from the time He saves us

  65. until our lives are over here on earth.

  66. But, as God works in us,

  67. as long as we're here in this world,

  68. we've got a sinful nature.

  69. And we don't always cooperate with God, do we?

  70. We don't always obey the Spirit of God's conviction,

  71. don't say that, don't do that.

  72. We just sometimes do what we want to do

  73. and say what we want to say.

  74. God's work in us to make us more and more like His Son

  75. is a lifetime process,

  76. but it's not a perfect process

  77. because of our continuing problems with sin within.

  78. That means that our spiritual growth

  79. will never just be totally consistent,

  80. growing and maturing and rising on up like a chart.

  81. No.

  82. No.

  83. I love the book title that Chuck Swindoll has,

  84. Three Steps Forward, Two Steps Back,

  85. because that is the way we grow as Christians.

  86. There's times in your life,

  87. you know since you've become a Christian,

  88. there have been times when you really made some good progress.

  89. God was just working in you,

  90. and you were obedient,

  91. you felt like you were close to Him,

  92. you could see how He was changing,

  93. maybe the way you thought about some things,

  94. the way you were actually living.

  95. But then,

  96. maybe you looked at yourself too closely

  97. and took pride in yourself.

  98. Before you knew it,

  99. you were having some bad attitudes,

  100. saying things you shouldn't say,

  101. doing some things you knew didn't please God.

  102. You make three steps forward sometimes,

  103. but take a step or even two steps back.

  104. But here's what I want us to understand.

  105. If we're Christians,

  106. we are making progress

  107. in our spiritual growth,

  108. in our development of Christ-like or Christian character,

  109. because God does that work.

  110. And God's not going to fail.

  111. He works within us,

  112. as we saw last week from Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  113. to cause us to will,

  114. to want,

  115. and to be able

  116. to please Him.

  117. But it's not going to be flawless.

  118. Now,

  119. this pattern of growth,

  120. up and down some,

  121. but still making progress.

  122. That is true about every aspect of our lives,

  123. including our speech.

  124. But you know,

  125. this means that

  126. we will experience struggles

  127. with our words at times,

  128. but some people experience more trouble,

  129. more struggle than others.

  130. Let's just face it.

  131. Some of us in this room,

  132. either before we became Christians

  133. or before we got serious

  134. about living a Christian life,

  135. we developed a vocabulary

  136. that was not Christian.

  137. And so sometimes,

  138. things don't go our way,

  139. something happens,

  140. and it's just automatic,

  141. saying words

  142. that really and truly

  143. don't please God.

  144. It's just sort of a habit.

  145. I don't know if you're like me,

  146. but, you know,

  147. if I live long enough

  148. and develop a little bit of dementia

  149. or something like that,

  150. I'm scared to death

  151. of what's going to come out of my mouth.

  152. Because I know all the words

  153. was pretty well

  154. well in most of them

  155. at one point in my life.

  156. That comes out.

  157. If you,

  158. in your earlier days,

  159. had a problem with anger,

  160. you're going to struggle with anger.

  161. God will help us to deal with it,

  162. to grow.

  163. But there are certain things,

  164. sin patterns in your life

  165. that you struggle with.

  166. And it may be

  167. some of your words

  168. are a part of that sin pattern.

  169. So, as we go through this,

  170. I want you to understand,

  171. our words,

  172. they are a reflection

  173. of what's in our heart.

  174. That's what Scripture says.

  175. That's what Jesus said.

  176. But we don't have pure hearts.

  177. We still have a problem

  178. with sin and selfishness

  179. and things that cause us

  180. to not think,

  181. speak perfectly,

  182. speak perfectly,

  183. or live perfectly like Jesus.

  184. But I want you to let God

  185. show you,

  186. as we go through this,

  187. what the real condition

  188. of your heart is.

  189. Now,

  190. last week we began

  191. looking at the wrong use of words

  192. and address two

  193. that I want to state this way

  194. this week.

  195. Malicious words.

  196. Gossip and slander.

  197. That's what we looked at last week.

  198. This week,

  199. last week I referred to them

  200. as the twin towers

  201. of destructive speech

  202. because that's what they are.

  203. But I'm switching it

  204. because I couldn't think

  205. of a way to continue

  206. that analogy

  207. for this week.

  208. So last week we looked

  209. at malicious words,

  210. gossip and slander.

  211. Let's look first today

  212. at untruthful words.

  213. The focus is going to be

  214. on lying.

  215. Old Testament scholar,

  216. Tremper Longman.

  217. In his commentary

  218. on Proverbs and Psalms,

  219. he listed about 20 verses

  220. in Proverbs

  221. that address the issue

  222. of untruthful speech.

  223. There may be more.

  224. But one sentence

  225. in Proverbs chapter 12

    Proverbs 12:22

  226. verse 22

  227. indicates why lying

  228. is such a serious sin.

  229. Look at it.

  230. Lying lips are an abomination

  231. to the Lord.

  232. The NIV says it this way,

  233. God detests lying lips.

  234. We can trim it down

  235. even simpler.

  236. God hates.

  237. God despises lying lips.

  238. Now, why would the Scripture

  239. state so strongly

  240. God's hatred

  241. of our lying?

  242. Well, first,

  243. it's totally contrary

  244. to His nature.

  245. You see, God's 100% truthful.

  246. That's just who He is.

  247. He can't help but be.

  248. He is God.

  249. He cannot lie.

  250. He thinks.

  251. He speaks.

  252. He acts in ways

  253. that are totally honest

  254. and truthful,

  255. above board,

  256. total integrity.

  257. That's just God.

  258. Jesus, when He came

  259. into this world,

  260. He came as God

  261. in the flesh.

  262. John chapter 1,

    John 1:1

  263. verse 1 says,

  264. The beginning was the Word

  265. and the Word was with God

  266. and the Word was God.

  267. Jesus, when He came

  268. into the world,

  269. He took on human nature.

  270. He became the God-man.

  271. And one of the ways

  272. Jesus described

  273. or explained

  274. who He was

  275. was in terms of

  276. He is truth.

  277. Look at this.

  278. John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  279. You know this.

  280. Jesus said,

  281. I am the way

  282. and the truth

  283. and the life.

  284. That's just

  285. the nature of God.

  286. And then the Bible

  287. is God's written Word

  288. and Jesus used

  289. the very word

  290. truth

  291. to describe

  292. God's Word

  293. in John 17, 17.

  294. He's praying.

  295. Talking to His heavenly Father

  296. and He says,

  297. Your Word

  298. is truth.

  299. So,

  300. whenever we lie,

  301. whenever we're deceptive,

  302. whenever we are

  303. trying to

  304. conceal the truth,

  305. we are

  306. 180 degrees

  307. from what God is

  308. and what the Lord Jesus is

  309. and what the Word of God is.

  310. whenever we lie,

  311. we're acting

  312. totally contrary

  313. to God,

  314. His nature,

  315. His character,

  316. everything.

  317. So, here's what

  318. we need to think about here.

  319. If you are a liar

  320. at heart,

  321. and some people are,

  322. you may have been

  323. around some people.

  324. A liar at heart

  325. is somebody

  326. who just

  327. thinks in terms

  328. of being deceptive,

  329. being dishonest.

  330. Say whatever it takes

  331. to get my way.

  332. And truth doesn't matter.

  333. All you're concerned about

  334. are just a habitual liar,

  335. liar to the core.

  336. You're just worried

  337. about getting caught.

  338. But it doesn't bother,

  339. if it doesn't bother you

  340. to lie,

  341. you cannot be

  342. a child of God.

  343. That's just as clear

  344. as clear can be.

  345. Here's why.

  346. God's totally

  347. non-lying.

  348. Totally truthful.

  349. If we're children of God,

  350. it's because God

  351. has put His Spirit

  352. in us,

  353. the Holy Spirit,

  354. the Spirit of God.

  355. And if the Spirit

  356. of God lives within us,

  357. because we still have

  358. a sinful nature,

  359. we can lie.

  360. And we do sometimes.

  361. But if we're Christians

  362. and we lie,

  363. sooner or later

  364. the Spirit of God

  365. is going to convict

  366. us,

  367. this is wrong,

  368. this is sinful,

  369. this is offensive to God.

  370. And it becomes

  371. offensive to us

  372. because it's contrary

  373. to our true nature

  374. as Christians.

  375. And so if you can lie,

  376. boys and girls,

  377. teenagers,

  378. middle-aged people,

  379. old people,

  380. if you can lie

  381. and it doesn't bother you,

  382. it's just who you are,

  383. how you are,

  384. what you do,

  385. you cannot have the Spirit

  386. of God within you.

  387. There is no way

  388. because the Spirit

  389. of God

  390. is all about

  391. truthfulness,

  392. honesty,

  393. integrity.

  394. God hates lying

  395. because it's contrary

  396. to His nature.

  397. God hates lying

  398. because it is the nature

  399. of the devil.

  400. as Jesus pointed out

  401. in John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  402. In that chapter,

  403. Jesus is having

  404. a confrontation

  405. with religious leaders,

  406. some Pharisees

  407. and others

  408. who are opposing Him,

  409. trying to undermine Him,

  410. trying to make people think

  411. He doesn't know

  412. what He's talking about,

  413. He's wrong,

  414. He's lying.

  415. They're trying to lead

  416. people astray,

  417. keep people from believing

  418. in Jesus,

  419. take them away from Him.

  420. And in the context

  421. of Him arguing

  422. with these people,

  423. telling them

  424. that they are liars,

  425. He says this

  426. about the devil,

  427. John 8, 44,

  428. when He lies,

  429. He speaks out

  430. of His own character,

  431. for He is a liar

  432. and the father

  433. of lying,

  434. lies.

  435. Lying is a very serious problem

  436. because it originates

  437. with Satan.

  438. That's where we see it

  439. first in the Bible,

  440. Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  441. the serpent tempts Eve.

  442. If you are a liar at heart,

  443. then according to what

  444. Jesus told those Pharisees,

  445. your father is the devil,

  446. not God.

  447. Now that's hard,

  448. but that's what Jesus

  449. Himself said

  450. to liars,

  451. people who knew

  452. they were,

  453. didn't care

  454. because it was going

  455. to further their agenda.

  456. God is not your father,

  457. the devil is

  458. because he is a liar

  459. and the father of lies.

  460. It's obvious

  461. in just these two examples

  462. why God hates lying.

  463. But as children of God,

  464. understanding this,

  465. shouldn't lying

  466. bother us?

  467. Shouldn't lying

  468. be something

  469. that we hate

  470. as well?

  471. It has to be,

  472. doesn't it?

  473. Lying is something

  474. we all need

  475. to take very seriously.

  476. It's something

  477. that we who influence

  478. children

  479. need to make sure

  480. they take seriously.

  481. I'm talking to parents,

  482. grandparents,

  483. aunts and uncles,

  484. teachers,

  485. coaches.

  486. If you are an influencer

  487. of children,

  488. you need to really

  489. emphasize

  490. the importance of truth,

  491. being truthful.

  492. Chuck Swindoll

  493. issues a good,

  494. important warning

  495. about children

  496. and lying.

  497. Look at what he says.

  498. He says,

  499. we do children

  500. no service

  501. by allowing them

  502. to ease

  503. out of responsibility

  504. for their lies.

  505. Tolerance

  506. only produces

  507. a more mature

  508. and skilled

  509. liar.

  510. Let's think about this

  511. for a moment.

  512. Children will lie

  513. for all kinds

  514. of reasons

  515. just like

  516. adults do.

  517. people lie

  518. because of

  519. the fear

  520. of consequences

  521. because they

  522. want to avoid

  523. embarrassment

  524. maybe.

  525. We lie

  526. just for basically

  527. selfish reasons.

  528. Whatever the

  529. reason is,

  530. you who influence

  531. children,

  532. when you find

  533. your child

  534. or a child

  535. you have influence

  536. responsible for,

  537. when you find

  538. that they lie,

  539. deal with it

  540. quickly

  541. and severely

  542. from a young

  543. age.

  544. That is,

  545. whenever they

  546. tell their

  547. first lie.

  548. I don't know

  549. if you parents

  550. are like me.

  551. My boys

  552. were growing

  553. up.

  554. I made

  555. too many

  556. things that

  557. shouldn't have

  558. been issues.

  559. I made them

  560. an issue.

  561. I died

  562. or shed

  563. blood,

  564. their blood,

  565. my blood,

  566. on too many

  567. hills

  568. when they

  569. were growing

  570. up.

  571. I've got

  572. one of them

  573. in the service

  574. and he can

  575. tell you

  576. that's true.

  577. I had one

  578. in the first

  579. service.

  580. I told the

  581. first service,

  582. you can ask

  583. him,

  584. I did.

  585. Too many

  586. things mattered,

  587. I thought,

  588. when they

  589. were young.

  590. It really

  591. and truly

  592. did not

  593. matter.

  594. But lying

  595. is one.

  596. that always

  597. matters.

  598. It is a

  599. hill worth

  600. spilling tons

  601. of blood

  602. on.

  603. Lying is

  604. something you

  605. bring out the

  606. nuclear arsenal

  607. to combat.

  608. We're talking

  609. about lying.

  610. It originates

  611. in Satan.

  612. It is something

  613. that God

  614. abhors,

  615. hates,

  616. despises

  617. to the

  618. core of

  619. his being.

  620. Deal

  621. with lying

  622. in your

  623. children and

  624. children you

  625. have influence

  626. over

  627. in an age

  628. appropriate

  629. way

  630. but don't

  631. let them

  632. get by

  633. with lying

  634. even one

  635. time.

  636. As

  637. Swindoll

  638. says,

  639. tolerance

  640. only produces

  641. a more

  642. mature

  643. and skilled

  644. liar.

  645. If you

  646. let them

  647. get by

  648. with it

  649. at four,

  650. they'll be

  651. much more

  652. adept at it

  653. at 14.

  654. And by

  655. the time

  656. they go

  657. out from

  658. your home,

  659. they'll be

  660. masters of

  661. lying.

  662. that's

  663. why you

  664. do

  665. as that

  666. philosopher

  667. said,

  668. that great

  669. philosopher

  670. Barney

  671. Fyfe,

  672. you gotta

  673. nip it

  674. in the

  675. bud.

  676. Lying

  677. is one,

  678. you gotta

  679. nip in

  680. the bud.

  681. Let's

  682. look at

  683. another

  684. wrong use

  685. of words.

  686. Self-promoting

  687. words,

  688. boasting,

  689. bragging

  690. words.

  691. Proverbs

  692. has several

  693. warnings about

  694. promoting

  695. yourself,

  696. bragging

  697. on yourself,

  698. your accomplishments,

  699. things like

  700. this.

  701. Look at

  702. two examples,

  703. Proverbs

  704. 26,

  705. 12.

  706. Do you

  707. see a

  708. man who

  709. is wise

  710. in his

  711. own eyes?

  712. There's

  713. more hope

  714. for a

  715. fool

  716. than for

  717. him.

  718. 27,

  719. 2.

  720. Let

  721. another

  722. praise

  723. you,

  724. not your

  725. own mouth,

  726. a stranger,

  727. not your

  728. own lips.

  729. If you,

  730. if there's

  731. something about

  732. you,

  733. and there

  734. certainly

  735. is,

  736. but if

  737. there's

  738. something

  739. about

  740. you

  741. that's

  742. good,

  743. that ought

  744. to be

  745. noticed,

  746. good to

  747. be affirmed,

  748. you let

  749. somebody else

  750. do it.

  751. You don't

  752. do it.

  753. You let

  754. someone that

  755. doesn't have

  756. any kind

  757. of vested

  758. interest in

  759. you,

  760. let that

  761. stranger do

  762. it.

  763. That'll be

  764. the more

  765. sincere one.

  766. The problem

  767. we're talking

  768. about here

  769. in these

  770. two verses,

  771. speaking to

  772. highly of

  773. ourselves or

  774. our

  775. accomplishments.

  776. He says

  777. it's very

  778. dangerous.

  779. There's more

  780. hope for a

  781. fool than

  782. for the

  783. person who

  784. is wise

  785. in his

  786. own eyes.

  787. You know

  788. why it's

  789. so dangerous

  790. for us to

  791. be wise

  792. in our

  793. own eyes?

  794. Because we

  795. don't have

  796. 20-20 vision

  797. when we look

  798. at ourselves.

  799. Aren't we

  800. biased?

  801. Aren't we

  802. biased?

  803. Do you

  804. know why the

  805. second great

  806. commandment

  807. says to

  808. love your

  809. neighbor as

  810. yourself?

  811. Because we

  812. love ourselves.

  813. We do.

  814. That's why the

  815. word of God

  816. says love your

  817. neighbor as

  818. yourself because

  819. you're going to

  820. love yourself.

  821. And we love

  822. what we do,

  823. a lot of what

  824. we do,

  825. not everything.

  826. You know the

  827. other word that

  828. can be used to

  829. describe such

  830. boasting, it's

  831. pride.

  832. God has a real

  833. problem with

  834. pride.

  835. He hates it

  836. too.

  837. There's a

  838. passage in

  839. Proverbs chapter

    Proverbs 6 chapter mention

  840. 6 where there

  841. are seven things

  842. that God hates.

  843. Look at it with

  844. me.

  845. We're just

  846. going to look

  847. at two.

  848. There are six

  849. things that the

  850. Lord hates,

  851. seven that are

  852. an abomination

  853. to him.

  854. Haughty eyes,

  855. a lying tongue.

  856. Note the

  857. lying tongue is

  858. second here on

  859. the list.

  860. We already

  861. covered that.

  862. But the first

  863. is haughty

  864. eyes.

  865. Some synonyms

  866. for haughty

  867. are proud,

  868. arrogant,

  869. conceited,

  870. self-important,

  871. stuck up.

  872. You know what

  873. I'm talking

  874. about.

  875. You understand.

  876. God hates

  877. our prideful,

  878. arrogant,

  879. conceited

  880. attitudes

  881. and actions

  882. including our

  883. words.

  884. Why does God

  885. hate it?

  886. Well God hates

  887. pride like this

  888. because it's

  889. demonstrating an

  890. attitude of

  891. self-centeredness

  892. instead of

  893. God-centeredness.

  894. See he's

  895. supposed to be

  896. the focus of

  897. our lives.

  898. Do all that we

  899. do for his

  900. glory.

  901. The greatest

  902. thing of all

  903. is to go and

  904. do his will.

  905. Well if we

  906. think we're

  907. the center of

  908. everything,

  909. if we think

  910. that we are

  911. self-sufficient,

  912. then our

  913. focus is just

  914. going to be on

  915. us and not

  916. him.

  917. We're going to

  918. live to please

  919. ourselves.

  920. Just do what

  921. we want,

  922. when we want,

  923. how we want,

  924. with no thought

  925. of what God's

  926. desire,

  927. plan may be.

  928. You know pride

  929. also affects our

  930. relationships with

  931. others.

  932. You know this,

  933. pride in

  934. relationship to

  935. others is sort

  936. of like an

  937. attitude of

  938. superiority.

  939. We think we're

  940. better than

  941. others.

  942. We think we're

  943. more important

  944. than others.

  945. We think we've

  946. accomplished more

  947. than others.

  948. And when we

  949. have that attitude

  950. it causes us to

  951. look down on

  952. people or just

  953. ignore them.

  954. fail to

  955. notice,

  956. fail to

  957. love.

  958. A prideful

  959. person usually

  960. has a problem

  961. with authority.

  962. A prideful

  963. person, I

  964. know it all,

  965. I don't need

  966. anybody to tell

  967. me, a lot

  968. of times a

  969. prideful person

  970. just resents

  971. authority at

  972. every level of

  973. life.

  974. The pride we're

  975. talking about,

  976. it comes out a

  977. lot of times in

  978. our words in

  979. relation to other

  980. people.

  981. We build

  982. ourselves up

  983. love, but we

  984. need some help

  985. so we put other

  986. people down.

  987. That's what

  988. gossip does,

  989. that's what

  990. slander does,

  991. that's what

  992. lying about

  993. another person

  994. does.

  995. Let's pause

  996. here and clarify

  997. that it's not

  998. prideful to

  999. acknowledge your

  1000. talents, your

  1001. abilities.

  1002. Because you have

  1003. some.

  1004. I said in the

  1005. first service,

  1006. these two young

  1007. ladies, Sarah and

  1008. Sabrina Stewart,

  1009. they can sing,

  1010. they can play

  1011. musical instruments.

  1012. And for them to

  1013. say, oh, I can't

  1014. do anything, that'd

  1015. just be foolish.

  1016. They need to, they

  1017. can acknowledge God

  1018. has given them

  1019. gifts, talents.

  1020. God has given

  1021. them the opportunity

  1022. to develop those

  1023. talents.

  1024. And they've done

  1025. very well in

  1026. doing it.

  1027. So it's not

  1028. wrong for you,

  1029. for me, for

  1030. them, to

  1031. acknowledge, I

  1032. can do some

  1033. things.

  1034. I'm pretty good

  1035. at some things.

  1036. I can, I have

  1037. won some awards

  1038. and so forth.

  1039. When it becomes

  1040. prideful is when

  1041. we take credit

  1042. for it, brag

  1043. about it, as if

  1044. we're the ones

  1045. responsible.

  1046. We all need to

  1047. never forget

  1048. everything that you

  1049. are, everything

  1050. that you have, it

  1051. originates from

  1052. God.

  1053. Paul addressed

  1054. this to the

  1055. Corinthian church

  1056. because they had

  1057. some pride problems

  1058. over people,

  1059. certain leaders.

  1060. And he made this

  1061. statement in 1

  1062. Corinthians 4,

  1063. what do you have

  1064. that you did not

  1065. receive?

  1066. If then you

  1067. received it,

  1068. why do you

  1069. boast as if you

  1070. did not receive

  1071. it?

  1072. Acknowledge what

  1073. God's given you,

  1074. but give him the

  1075. credit.

  1076. Praise him.

  1077. Thank him.

  1078. Boys and girls,

  1079. I have heard

  1080. children actually

  1081. say these words

  1082. to me.

  1083. I'm the smartest

  1084. kid in my class.

  1085. I'm the best

  1086. player on my

  1087. team.

  1088. I've heard that.

  1089. Boys and girls,

  1090. do not ever tell

  1091. a human being

  1092. in this world,

  1093. I'm the best

  1094. player on my

  1095. team.

  1096. I'm the smartest

  1097. kid in my

  1098. class.

  1099. That's just a

  1100. prideful,

  1101. arrogant,

  1102. conceited statement

  1103. for you to

  1104. make.

  1105. It's wrong.

  1106. Now,

  1107. if someone

  1108. else tells you

  1109. that,

  1110. if one of your

  1111. classmates,

  1112. one of your

  1113. teammates comes

  1114. up to you and

  1115. says,

  1116. pats you on the

  1117. back,

  1118. boy,

  1119. you're just the

  1120. best player on

  1121. our team.

  1122. You look at that

  1123. person,

  1124. you just say,

  1125. thank you.

  1126. Just say,

  1127. thank you.

  1128. If somebody

  1129. comes up in the

  1130. class and says,

  1131. you're the smartest

  1132. one on the team,

  1133. just tell them,

  1134. thank you.

  1135. And if you feel

1136. like, I just got to

  1137. say something else,

  1138. just say, I'm just

  1139. thankful that the

  1140. Lord gave me the

  1141. ability to do that.

  1142. Because if you're the

  1143. best player on your

  1144. team, who made you

  1145. fast?

  1146. Who made you

  1147. athletic?

  1148. If you're the smartest

  1149. one in your class,

  1150. who gave you the

  1151. mind to do,

1152. make the grades and do

  1153. what you do.

  1154. Just say, thank you.

1155. If you have to say

  1156. more, thank God,

  1157. acknowledge that it's

  1158. a gift from Him.

  1159. You're just thankful.

1160. But don't let it go to

  1161. your head.

  1162. Boys and girls,

  1163. don't brag.

  1164. that's pride.

1165. And I want you to

  1166. understand something.

1167. God hates to hear it

  1168. coming out of your

  1169. mouth.

  1170. And your friends

1171. don't want to hear it

  1172. either.

1173. I want us all right now,

  1174. let's think about some

1175. of the things we normally

  1176. say.

  1177. Listen carefully to

  1178. yourself.

1179. Do you hear that you're

  1180. a boastful kind of

  1181. person?

  1182. Look carefully at

  1183. yourself.

1184. Do you see some signs

  1185. of pride?

1186. We all need to be on

  1187. guard.

  1188. It can creep in.

1189. It does at times with

  1190. all of us.

  1191. But pride will separate

  1192. us from God quicker

  1193. than anything else.

  1194. James and Peter both

  1195. in the New Testament

  1196. tell us this,

  1197. make it clear.

  1198. Look at what James

  1199. says, just one sentence.

  1200. God opposes the proud

1201. but gives grace to the

  1202. humble.

  1203. Peter, it really expands

  1204. that.

1205. Look at what he says in

  1206. 1 Peter 5.

  1207. All of you,

  1208. clothe yourselves with

  1209. humility toward one

  1210. another because God

  1211. opposes the proud but

1212. He gives grace to the

  1213. humble.

  1214. Humble yourselves

  1215. therefore under God's

1216. mighty hand that He may

1217. lift you up in due

  1218. time.

  1219. You see in there,

  1220. there's a solution to

  1221. our pride problem.

  1222. Humble yourself under

  1223. God's mighty hand.

  1224. Humble yourself.

  1225. It recognizes that God's

  1226. God and you aren't.

  1227. Recognize that who you

1228. are and what you are

1229. has been given to you

  1230. by God.

1231. There's no room for you

  1232. to brag about it.

  1233. Be prideful over it.

1234. How do you need to

  1235. respond to what the

  1236. Lord has said through

  1237. His word this morning

1238. about the wrong use of

  1239. your words in lying,

  1240. in bragging?

  1241. Has God convicted you?

1242. Has He made it clear to

  1243. you that you've got a

  1244. problem?

  1245. You've got a problem with

  1246. the truth.

  1247. You've got a problem with

  1248. being prideful.

1249. Well, the way to respond

1250. is to just admit it to

  1251. Him.

  1252. Don't make excuses.

  1253. Confess it to Him.

  1254. Repent of it.

  1255. Change your mind.

  1256. Turn from it.

1257. Ask Him to help you to

1258. see how bad it really is

  1259. and turn from it.

  1260. Stop it.

1261. Ask Him to give you the

  1262. ability to think before

  1263. you speak.

1264. To help you to understand

  1265. that everything you are

  1266. and everything you have

1267. has been given to you

  1268. by Him.

  1269. Turn from your sin.

  1270. Put your faith and

  1271. trust in Jesus.

  1272. If you're not a Christian,

  1273. think.

1274. When He died on the

  1275. cross, He actually paid

1276. the penalty for my sin.

  1277. He took my punishment.

  1278. If you'll trust Him,

  1279. you'll be forgiven because

1280. the penalty for your sin

  1281. will be paid.

  1282. So trust Him.

1283. Call upon Him to save you.

1284. If you are a Christian,

1285. but you realize I have

  1286. developed,

1287. I have developed sort of

1288. a being loose with the

  1289. truth.

  1290. Or I know that there's

1291. some pride issues in my

  1292. life.

  1293. Confess that to God.

  1294. Truly repent of it.

1295. Ask Him to help you to

  1296. truly turn.

  1297. And understand that when

1298. Jesus died for your sins,

  1299. He paid the penalty.

  1300. So accept your forgiveness

1301. and just ask God now to

1302. help you to be more

  1303. sensitive to His Spirit,

1304. to be alert to times when

  1305. you're tempted to tell a

1306. lie, to be alert to the

1307. pride issues in your life,

  1308. the boasting temptations in

1309. your life, and ask Him to

1310. help you to say no to those.

  1311. To humble yourself.

  1312. To speak the truth.

1313. Our words really do matter.

1314. They have an effect on many

  1315. people as well as

  1316. ourselves.

1317. Our words matter because they

1318. reflect the true condition of

  1319. our heart.

1320. That's why our words be used

1321. as a criteria for judgment on

  1322. our judgment day.

1323. I want to conclude like I have

1324. with the last two messages.

  1325. These chilling words of

1326. Jesus from Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

1327. I tell you on the day of

1328. judgment, people will give an

  1329. account for every careless

  1330. word they speak.

1331. For by your words you will be

  1332. justified.

1333. And by your words you will be

  1334. condemned.

  1335. Let's pray together.

1336. Father, show us how we should

  1337. respond.

1338. Show each individual in this

  1339. room.

1340. Help us to do it.

1341. Help that person who is not a

1342. Christian to call upon Jesus

1343. right now to surrender their

1344. lives to Him as Lord.

1345. Father, help that Christian who

1346. has been convicted this morning

1347. of their just plain selfishness,

  1348. self-centeredness.

1349. They're just full of pride.

1350. It comes out in their words and

  1351. their actions.

1352. Convict that one who will lie to

1353. get out of suffering consequences,

  1354. to avoid embarrassment.

1355. Dear God, draw them back to you.

  1356. The God of truth.

1357. Draw them back to you.

1358. The source of all that they are,

  1359. all that they have.

1360. Draw them back and cause them to

  1361. humble themselves before you.

  1362. And seek your forgiveness.

1363. And renewed fellowship with you.

1364. Right now, in an attitude of

1365. prayer, let's just all listen to the

1366. Lord and respond to Him.

1367. I'd be happy to pray with you,

1368. talk with you here at the front.

1369. You want to come down during this

1370. next few minutes as the musicians

  1371. play.

1372. We're just going to be still and

1373. silent and pray before the Lord.

  1374. Do it.
