  1. Kellyanne Conway, you know her.

  2. She's one of the most powerful individuals in this country.

  3. Her official title is Counselor to the President of the United States.

  4. She also ran Donald Trump's presidential campaign, led him to success.

  5. Well, about two months ago, on January the 9th was the date,

  6. she tried to defend Donald Trump's loose tongue with this statement,

  7. you always want to go by what's come out of his mouth rather than look at what's in his heart.

  8. She made that statement in a live interview.

  9. You can go online and just look it up, read it for yourself, or watch it.

  10. I want to be very clear that in no way was intended to be a political slap at her or President Trump.

  11. I hope and pray that he will be a great president and help our country,

  12. and she'll help him along the way.

  13. But that is a demonstration or an example of someone who tries to downplay the importance of our words.

  14. Now, when I first read that, I was stunned.

  15. She was telling us, telling the world,

  16. not to listen to what the President-elect of the United States was saying,

  17. but just look in his heart.

  18. Now, think about that.

  19. She was saying that what comes out of a person's mouth is no reflection of what is in his heart.

  20. That's the exact opposite of what Jesus said.

  21. Look with me at Luke chapter 6, verse 45.

    Luke 6:45

  22. Jesus said,

  23. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

  24. The New Living Translation says it this way,

  25. What you say flows from what is in your heart.

  26. Jesus was making the point there.

  27. Also in Matthew chapter 12, verse 36.

    Matthew 12:36

  28. That what comes out of a person's mouth is a clear reflection of what is in his or hers heart.

  29. Jesus confirms what we've been looking at in the book of Proverbs over the past seven weeks, doesn't it?

  30. Words matter.

  31. Your words matter.

  32. My words matter.

  33. Because words are powerful.

  34. That book of wisdom, Proverbs.

  35. You remember how it describes the power of our speech in life or death terms?

  36. Look at it again from Proverbs 18, 21.

  37. Death and life are in the power of the tongue.

  38. The power of the tongue.

  39. The power of our speech.

  40. The power of our words.

  41. They can destroy.

  42. They can destroy.

  43. They can destroy us.

  44. They can destroy other people.

  45. But words can also be life-giving.

  46. Life-encouraging.

  47. And we've looked at examples of all of that.

  48. Well, this morning I want us to conclude this study on the power of our words or the importance of our words

  49. by looking closely at the two passages from the New Testament

  50. that we've been looking at from time to time throughout this series.

  51. Luke chapter 6 verses 43 through 45 and Matthew chapter 12 verses 36 and 37.

    Luke 6:43–45 Matthew 12:36

  52. I'm going to put it on the screen, but if you want to turn to in your Bible and just look at it, mark it.

  53. Luke chapter 6, Matthew chapter 12.

Luke 6 chapter mention Matthew 12 chapter mention

  54. Let's look first at this.

  55. Our words reveal the kind of relationship we currently have with God.

  56. I want you to understand that.

  57. From what Jesus said, and it's going to be clear.

  58. Our words, the way we talk, it indicates what our current relationship with God is right now.

  59. Look at Luke 6, 43 through 45.

  60. Jesus said,

  61. For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit.

  62. For each tree is known by its fruit.

  63. For figs are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.

  64. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good.

  65. And the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil.

  66. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

  67. Jesus often used that analogy of how a tree is known by the fruit it produces to teach an important lesson.

  68. A person is known by the fruit that he or she produces.

  69. I want you to think about how Jesus explained that in terms of both people who do evil and people who do good.

  70. For an example, he said twice in reference to false teachers to be aware of them because of their fruit.

  71. Look at it.

  72. Matthew 7, verse 15.

    Matthew 7:15

  73. He says,

  74. Be aware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

  75. You will recognize them by their fruits.

  76. And then he went on in verse 20 to repeat that very same statement.

  77. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

  78. So Jesus in teaching that Sermon on the Mount, he says you can spot a false teacher, a false prophet.

  79. You can spot someone who is lying to you.

  80. You can spot someone who is basically an evil person doing evil things by looking at the fruit of their life.

  81. But that's also true about his people, faithful people, good people.

  82. Look in John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  83. Jesus in speaking to his disciples said,

  84. Abide or remain in me and I in you.

  85. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine,

  86. neither can you unless you abide in me.

  87. I am the vine, you are the branches.

  88. Whoever abides in me and I in him,

  89. he it is that bears much fruit,

  90. for apart from me you can do nothing.

  91. By this my Father is glorified that you bear much fruit

  92. and so prove to be my disciples.

  93. Let's think about that.

  94. We all know that a tree produces fruit according to its nature.

  95. To use what Jesus said,

  96. A fig tree produces figs.

  97. An apple tree produces apples.

  98. A grits tree produces grits.

  99. Now I just said that to see what you would do.

  100. See if you were paying attention.

  101. But I don't understand it.

  102. Louis Grisard wrote a book,

  103. Don't Sit Under the Grits Tree with Anyone But Me.

  104. Why would he lie in the title of his book?

  105. Anyway, you know,

  106. a tree produces fruit according to its nature.

  107. What Jesus is talking about,

  108. when he uses this word fruit,

  109. to describe what people produce,

  110. he's saying that whatever you are,

  111. you will demonstrate it

  112. by the things that are observed in your life.

  113. It's a general term

  114. to describe a variety of things,

  115. when he's talking about a Christian now,

  116. that the Spirit of God will do and produce in our lives.

  117. When Jesus talks about fruit,

  118. he's talking about what comes out of us.

  119. He's talking about our words.

  120. He's talking about our actions.

  121. He's talking about our character.

  122. In terms of a Christian,

  123. Paul wrote about the fruit of the Spirit,

  124. describing character qualities,

  125. like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

  126. self-control, these kinds of things.

  127. When Jesus was talking about it there

  128. in John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  129. there were such things that he said

  130. about his people being able to pray

  131. in his name and God hearing.

  132. A fruitful life is a life that is seen

  133. in demonstrating Christian character,

  134. Christ-like character,

  135. being a person of prayer,

  136. being a person who's concerned about

  137. knowing and doing God's will

  138. and praying accordingly.

  139. The fruit of our life would be

  140. any kind of good works that we do

  141. because we love God or we love people.

  142. We want to meet people's needs.

  143. We want to please God.

  144. But in terms of this message,

  145. the focus of today,

  146. the fruit that a person produces

  147. includes the words that we speak.

  148. That's what I want to underline today.

  149. Jesus taught that each person produces fruit

  150. that is consistent with what's in their heart.

  151. That's another way of saying

  152. that we produce fruit consistent with who we are,

  153. who we are deep down.

  154. When Jesus says,

  155. what comes out of our mouth originates in our heart,

  156. he's just saying,

  157. what comes out of our mouth comes from

  158. who we are, period.

  159. Who we are with no mask.

  160. Who we are, no covering up.

  161. Who we are as God sees us.

  162. Jesus makes it clear.

  163. Your words.

  164. My words.

  165. They are a reflection

  166. of what's in us.

  167. That's what the last part of verse 45 means in Luke 6.

  168. For out of the abundance of the heart,

  169. his mouth speaks.

  170. I don't think,

  171. generally speaking,

  172. we believe that.

  173. Or at least we don't like to think that way, do we?

  174. Because we sometimes think about

  175. how we use careless words,

  176. I didn't mean what I said,

  177. things like that.

  178. But what Jesus is saying here

  179. in Luke chapter 6

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  180. and in Matthew chapter 12

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  181. that we've been looking at

  182. throughout this whole series,

  183. he really means it.

  184. And there's no other way to take it.

  185. I want you to listen to how

  186. some respected Bible teachers

  187. describe what Jesus is saying here

  188. when he says,

  189. for out of the abundance of the heart,

  190. the mouth speaks.

  191. Look at what Darrell Bach says.

  192. We are what we produce,

  193. especially when it comes to what we say.

  194. The mouth is a litmus test

  195. of who we are spiritually.

  196. Look at what David Garland says.

  197. The assumption is,

  198. in what Jesus said,

  199. that the mouth is a spigot

  200. from which flows

  201. what is hidden away in the heart.

  202. And then John framed.

  203. We act and speak then

  204. according to our character.

  205. We follow the deepest desires

  206. of our hearts.

  207. Look one more time.

  208. Or rather,

  209. look at one verse

  210. along this line

  211. that should also

  212. really get our attention.

  213. It's in Matthew 12, verse 36.

    Matthew 12:36

  214. Jesus says,

  215. I tell you on the day of judgment,

  216. people will give account

  217. for every careless word

  218. they speak.

  219. We're going to look at that

  220. in a little bit more detail later.

  221. We'll look at that phrase,

  222. people will give an account

  223. for every careless word

  224. they speak.

  225. The word careless here

  226. means idle.

  227. Idle words.

  228. What we would consider

  229. insignificant words.

  230. Careless words are the things

  231. that just sort of come out.

  232. things that we say

  233. without thinking.

  234. Off the cuff remarks.

  235. And you might think,

  236. well,

  237. do those words really matter?

  238. I mean,

  239. just sort of

  240. spouting off a little bit.

  241. Look at how

  242. Craig Blomberg

  243. points out

  244. why careless words

  245. are not harmless words.

  246. He says,

  247. what may seem like

  248. merely trivial

  249. or casual remarks

  250. may at times

  251. better reflect

  252. the true attitude

  253. of one's heart

  254. than more carefully

  255. chosen words.

  256. What Jesus is saying

  257. about these careless words,

  258. and Blomberg

  259. is trying to emphasize,

  260. it's those careless,

  261. without thinking,

  262. off the cuff remarks

  263. sometimes

  264. that really

  265. shows

  266. what we're

  267. thinking,

  268. what we feel,

  269. what we really

  270. are.

  271. This is a warning

  272. to all of us.

  273. We need to be

  274. aware that

  275. those hurtful things

  276. that we say

  277. in anger,

  278. in frustration,

  279. and then come back

  280. later on and say,

  281. oh, I didn't mean it.

  282. Jesus is saying,

  283. you did mean it.

  284. Here's what I think

  285. he's talking about.

  286. When I get mad

  287. and I pop off,

  288. at that moment,

  289. that's what I mean.

  290. I may get mad

  291. at Mike

  292. and say,

  293. you're an absolute

  294. moron.

  295. And at that moment,

  296. my attitude

  297. and my heart,

  298. I am just mad

  299. at him,

  300. I want to hurt him,

  301. I want to do something

  302. to put him down.

  303. That is what I mean

  304. at that moment

  305. in time.

  306. That's what Jesus

  307. is saying.

  308. Now,

  309. as a Christian,

  310. we're going to come

  311. to this in a moment

  312. and we're going to look

  313. at Peter as an example

  314. so you know I'm not

  315. just blowing smoke here,

  316. I'm telling you

  317. what really happens.

  318. As a Christian,

  319. I may get mad

  320. and I may pop off

  321. to him or someone.

  322. At that moment in time,

  323. that's what I want

  324. to do.

  325. I wanted to hurt him,

  326. I wanted to hit him,

  327. I wanted to do

  328. something to him.

  329. But when I calm down,

  330. I think to myself,

  331. why did I do that?

  332. Why did I say that?

  333. I don't really think

  334. he's a moron,

  335. I don't really want

  336. to hurt him.

  337. And if I really do that,

  338. I'm going to go

  339. and apologize to him.

  340. I'm going to let him know

  341. that is out of character.

  342. It's not what I really think,

  343. but the truth is,

  344. at the moment,

  345. I did.

  346. And when you say

  347. those things,

  348. you do too.

  349. And we have to accept

  350. ownership for that stuff.

  351. It's not just blowing smoke.

  352. Jesus is saying

  353. it matters

  354. because it indicates

  355. what we are.

  356. Careless words

  357. are not harmless words.

  358. And that bothers me.

  359. And Jesus intends

  360. for it to bother us all.

  361. What Jesus is actually

  362. teaching in all this

  363. is that if we think

  364. we've got a problem

  365. with our mouth,

  366. we've really got

  367. a much more serious problem

  368. because we've got

  369. a problem

  370. with our heart.

  371. The mouth only

  372. spews out

  373. that which is

  374. deeper in us.

  375. We really don't have

  376. word problems.

  377. We have heart problems,

  378. Jesus is saying.

  379. Let's go back

  380. to what we read

  381. in John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  382. Look again

  383. at what Jesus

  384. told his disciples.

  385. He said,

  386. you abide in me,

  387. you remain in me.

  388. You stay united to me

  389. and I in you.

  390. As the branch

  391. cannot bear fruit

  392. by itself

  393. unless it abides

  394. in the vine,

  395. neither can you

  396. unless you abide in me.

  397. I am the vine,

  398. you are the branches.

  399. Whoever abides in me

  400. and I in him,

  401. he it is

  402. that bears

  403. much fruit.

  404. For apart from me,

  405. you can do nothing.

  406. The only way

  407. that we can have

  408. a good heart

  409. and produce

  410. good fruit

  411. in terms of our words

  412. or our actions

  413. is if we have

  414. a real relationship

  415. with Jesus Christ.

  416. That's what he was

  417. telling his disciples.

  418. That's really the point

  419. he's making

  420. in Luke chapter 6

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  421. and Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  422. We're born

  423. with a sinful heart.

  424. All of us.

  425. We're born

  426. with a sinful heart

  427. that is incapable

  428. of producing

  429. the good fruit

  430. that Jesus was

  431. talking about.

  432. I mean,

  433. that's what he says.

  434. Apart from him,

  435. we can do nothing.

  436. The only way

  437. that our hearts

  438. can be changed

  439. is by the supernatural

  440. work of God

  441. that he does

  442. when he brings about

  443. a new birth.

  444. Jesus talked about that

  445. in his conversation

  446. with the man named

  447. Nicodemus

  448. in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  449. I'd encourage you

  450. to read that.

  451. Now,

  452. if God's already

  453. done this work

  454. in us

  455. to bring about

  456. a new birth,

  457. God has regenerated us.

  458. If God has changed

  459. our heart,

  460. if God has put

  461. his spirit in us,

  462. that's what changes us.

  463. And there will be

  464. evidence in our lives.

  465. We will,

  466. to use these

  467. same analogies,

  468. we will produce

  469. good fruit.

  470. We'll bear

  471. good fruit.

  472. And a part of that

  473. good fruit will be

  474. good words.

  475. And so,

  476. we are at a point now

  477. where we just need

  478. to look at ourselves.

  479. You think about

  480. your life.

  481. Do you see

  482. evidence

  483. that God

  484. has worked in you,

  485. brought about

  486. a change in you,

  487. a change of heart,

  488. that results in

  489. you bearing forth

  490. good fruit,

  491. good works,

  492. good words.

  493. Now,

  494. let's be clear

  495. about this.

  496. Jesus was not

  497. saying that

  498. Christians will

  499. produce only

  500. good fruit

  501. and good words.

  502. That's what I was

  503. talking about

  504. a moment ago.

  505. I want you to

  506. look at the

  507. pattern of your life.

  508. Think about,

  509. think about how

  510. you really are

  511. in the big

  512. picture.

  513. People who

  514. observe you

  515. over a period

  516. of time,

  517. what do they

  518. see?

  519. Let me ask it

  520. another way.

  521. What are your

  522. deepest desires

  523. most days?

  524. What does your

  525. speech reveal

  526. about you

  527. most of the time?

  528. and what

  529. direction is your

  530. life heading

  531. overall?

  532. Are you

  533. making progress

  534. in developing

  535. Christian character?

  536. Are you

  537. really growing

  538. and becoming

  539. more obviously

  540. a child of God,

  541. a follower

  542. of Jesus?

  543. Nobody lives

  544. this kind of

  545. way,

  546. produces this

  547. kind of fruit

  548. every day,

  549. all the time.

  550. And Peter's

  551. the example

  552. that I referred

  553. to a moment

  554. ago.

  555. The apostle

  556. Peter,

  557. in case you

  558. don't know

  559. who that

  560. is,

  561. Peter was

  562. the leader

  563. of Jesus'

  564. band of

  565. disciples,

  566. apostles,

  567. the ones he

  568. commissioned

  569. to be with

  570. him.

  571. He trained

  572. them and he

  573. sent them

  574. out in the

  575. power of the

  576. Holy Spirit.

  577. And there's a

  578. lot of information

  579. about Peter

  580. in the first

  581. part of the

  582. book of Acts,

  583. how faithful

  584. he was.

  585. He truly

  586. loved the

  587. Lord,

  588. but he also

  589. truly failed

  590. his Lord

  591. on several

  592. occasions.

  593. One of the

  594. worst examples

  595. is what's

  596. most remembered

  597. is when Jesus

  598. was arrested,

  599. was on trial,

  600. about to be

  601. executed,

  602. at a time when

  603. he really needed

  604. the support of

  605. his followers,

  606. they deserted

  607. him.

  608. And Peter

  609. not only

  610. deserted him,

  611. but Peter

  612. denied when

  613. asked.

  614. He denied

  615. that he even

  616. knew Jesus.

  617. Three times

  618. he said,

  619. I don't know

  620. the man.

  621. Peter's

  622. words

  623. indicated he

  624. was not

  625. a follower

  626. of Jesus.

  627. Peter's

  628. words

  629. indicated

  630. somebody who

  631. had a bad

  632. heart,

  633. but that was

  634. not what he

  635. normally was,

  636. not how he

  637. normally spoke.

  638. But Peter,

  639. that wasn't just

  640. one day.

  641. He had other

  642. issues when he

  643. was unfaithful.

  644. Years later,

  645. he was

  646. around a

  647. group of

  648. Gentile

  649. Christians.

  650. He was

  651. coming from

  652. a Jewish

  653. background.

  654. And when he

  655. was around

  656. these Gentile

  657. Christians,

  658. he treated

  659. them just

  660. like equals,

  661. brothers and

  662. sisters.

  663. But when

  664. some Jewish

  665. Christians came

  666. to the

  667. community,

  668. he acted

  669. like he

  670. didn't know

  671. these Gentile

  672. Christians.

  673. And the

  674. Apostle Paul

  675. saw that,

  676. and the

  677. Apostle Paul

  678. in front of

  679. everybody called

  680. him out,

  681. called him a

  682. hypocrite,

  683. and even

  684. wrote it in

  685. the book of

  686. Galatians

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  687. chapter 2.

  688. It's recorded

  689. in Scripture

  690. that the

  691. great Apostle

  692. Peter played

  693. the role of

  694. a hypocrite

  695. in the early

  696. church in

  697. one setting.

  698. Why am I

  699. saying this?

  700. There are

  701. days when

  702. any Christian,

  703. even Peter,

  704. when their

  705. words and

  706. actions are

  707. terrible,

  708. are ungodly,

  709. people,

  710. but the

  711. overall pattern

  712. of a

  713. genuine

  714. Christian's

  715. life is

  716. that we

  717. truly do

  718. love the

  719. Lord,

  720. and we

  721. show it

  722. by the

  723. way that

  724. we live,

  725. including the

  726. way that

  727. we speak.

  728. And so

  729. here's another

  730. question.

  731. As you look

  732. at your life,

  733. what is the

  734. overall pattern?

  735. is there

  736. evidence,

  737. consistent

  738. evidence,

  739. that the

  740. Spirit of

  741. God indwells

  742. you and

  743. is working

  744. in you,

  745. developing

  746. you,

  747. changing

  748. you?

  749. Does your

  750. speech reveal

  751. that?

  752. Does your

  753. overall

  754. character show

  755. that?

  756. not on a

  757. bad day,

  758. but the

  759. overall

  760. pattern of

  761. your life

  762. does it

  763. show that

  764. you clearly

  765. are a

  766. child of

  767. God because

  768. of the

  769. evidence,

  770. the fruit

  771. that is

  772. visible?

  773. If you

  774. cannot see

  775. such evidence,

  776. Jesus says

  777. your heart

  778. is bad.

  779. That's the

  780. problem.

  781. And the

  782. solution is

  783. for you to

  784. ask God to

  785. change your

  786. heart, to

  787. admit that

  788. you're not

  789. His, and

  790. if you

  791. want to

  792. be, tell

  793. God that

  794. you are

  795. truly sorry

  796. for the way

  797. that you

  798. have lived

  799. and dishonored

  800. Him and

  801. disobeyed

  802. Him.

  803. Change your

  804. mind about

  805. the way

  806. you've been

  807. living.

  808. Turn from

  809. it.

  810. Repent.

  811. Put your

  812. trust in

  813. Jesus that

  814. when He died

  815. on the cross

  816. He actually

  817. paid the

  818. penalty for

  819. your sins.

  820. call upon

  821. Him to

  822. come into

  823. your life

  824. and be

  825. your Savior.

  826. And when

  827. you are

  828. united to

  829. Him by

  830. faith,

  831. His death

  832. for your

  833. sins is

  834. what's credited

  835. to you.

  836. You are

  837. forgiven.

  838. You become

  839. a child of

  840. God.

  841. He will

  842. change you

  843. from the

  844. inside out

  845. if you will

  846. truly commit

  847. your life to

  848. Christ as

  849. your Savior

  850. and your

  851. Lord.

  852. Now it

  853. may be that

  854. you would

  855. say,

  856. I know

  857. that I'm

  858. a Christian.

  859. I know

  860. God's done

  861. that new

  862. work in

  863. me.

  864. I know

  865. He has

  866. changed

  867. me.

  868. And He

  869. throughout

  870. my life

  871. He's been

  872. changing

  873. me.

  874. But right

  875. now,

  876. right now

  877. there's very

  878. little evidence.

  879. Right now

  880. the fruit

  881. that you see

  882. in my life

  883. is decayed.

  884. It's rotten.

  885. If that's

  886. the case,

  887. I want to

  888. encourage you

  889. to just be

  890. honest with

  891. God about

  892. your failing

  893. Him.

  894. You're not

  895. being faithful.

  896. Confess your

  897. sin.

  898. Repent.

  899. Change your

  900. mind.

  901. Turn around.

  902. Come back

  903. to Him in a

  904. renewed faith,

  905. renewed

  906. commitment to

  907. living life His

  908. way instead of

  909. your way.

  910. Now before

  911. we close out

  912. this study of

  913. our words,

  914. we need to

  915. look at one

  916. more thing

  917. that Jesus

  918. said that

  919. we've looked

  920. at in just

  921. about every

  922. message.

  923. It comes

  924. from Matthew

  925. 12.

  926. Here's the

  927. statement.

  928. Our words

  929. will reveal

  930. what kind

  931. of relationship

  932. we will

  933. eternally have

  934. with God.

  935. Look at what

  936. Jesus said in

  937. verse 36 of

  938. Matthew 12.

  939. I tell you

  940. on the day of

  941. judgment,

  942. people will

  943. give an

  944. account for

  945. every careless

  946. word they

  947. speak.

  948. For by your

  949. words you'll

  950. be justified.

  951. And by your

  952. words you'll be

  953. condemned.

  954. This verse is

  955. not teaching

  956. that our

  957. salvation is

  958. determined by

  959. our words.

  960. The Bible does

  961. not teach that

  962. we can earn

  963. our salvation

  964. by doing

  965. certain things

  966. or not doing

  967. certain things.

  968. By the way we

  969. speak or not

  970. speak.

  971. The Bible

  972. clearly teaches

  973. that salvation is

  974. by God's grace.

  975. It's undeserved.

  976. It's unearned.

  977. Our salvation

  978. is by God's

  979. grace through

  980. faith in

  981. Jesus Christ

  982. as our

  983. Savior.

  984. That he

  985. paid the

  986. penalty for

  987. our sins

  988. when he

  989. died on

  990. the cross.

  991. Salvation is

  992. by the grace

  993. of God

  994. through faith

  995. in Jesus

  996. Christ plus

  997. nothing else.

  998. But that's

  999. not all the

  1000. Bible says.

  1001. The Bible

  1002. clearly teaches

  1003. that our

  1004. works,

  1005. including our

  1006. words,

  1007. demonstrates

  1008. the reality

  1009. of our

  1010. faith.

  1011. And that's

  1012. what Jesus

  1013. is saying

  1014. in this

  1015. passage in

  1016. Matthew 12.

  1017. Listen to

  1018. how the

  1019. ESV study

  1020. Bible

  1021. explains

  1022. what Jesus

  1023. is saying

  1024. in verses

  1025. 36 and

  1026. 37.

  1027. By your

  1028. words you

  1029. will be

  1030. justified

  1031. means

  1032. people's

  1033. words

  1034. will be

  1035. outward

  1036. evidence

  1037. of their

  1038. inward

  1039. character.

  1040. It also

  1041. says the

  1042. word justified

  1043. here means

  1044. shown to

  1045. be righteous.

  1046. Now I know

  1047. a lot of

  1048. people you

  1049. have studied

  1050. the Bible

  1051. and you

  1052. know that

  1053. the Apostle

  1054. Paul uses

  1055. the word

  1056. justified

  1057. in his

  1058. letters

  1059. especially in

  1060. Romans and

  1061. Galatians

  1062. and when he

  1063. says we

  1064. are justified

  1065. by faith

  1066. in Jesus

  1067. Christ

  1068. he's talking

  1069. about we

  1070. are declared

  1071. right with

  1072. God.

  1073. We're declared

  1074. righteous

  1075. through faith

  1076. in Jesus.

  1077. That is

  1078. not how

  1079. Jesus uses

  1080. the word.

  1081. Jesus uses

  1082. the word

  1083. to say

  1084. shown

  1085. to be

  1086. righteous.

  1087. And then

  1088. the ESV

  1089. study Bible

  1090. goes on

  1091. similarly

  1092. evil people's

  1093. evil words

  1094. will be

  1095. evidence

  1096. by which

  1097. they will

  1098. be condemned.

  1099. John

  1100. MacArthur

  1101. echoes

  1102. this.

  1103. He says

  1104. every person

  1105. is judged

  1106. by his

  1107. words

  1108. because

  1109. they

  1110. reveal

  1111. the state

  1112. of his

  1113. heart.

  1114. It seems

  1115. that

  1116. most people

  1117. will readily

  1118. admit

  1119. I have

  1120. trouble at

  1121. times with

  1122. my tongue

  1123. but a lot

  1124. of people

  1125. do not

  1126. understand

  1127. that that

  1128. is an

  1129. indication

  1130. of a

  1131. problem

  1132. with their

  1133. heart

  1134. with their

  1135. real

  1136. self.

  1137. Jesus

  1138. says

  1139. we struggle

  1140. with our

  1141. tongue

  1142. because we

  1143. have a

  1144. problem

  1145. with our

  1146. heart.

  1147. What comes

  1148. out of our

  1149. mouth

  1150. reveals

  1151. what is

  1152. really

  1153. in us.

  1154. What comes

  1155. out of our

  1156. mouth is

  1157. a reflection

  1158. of who

  1159. you are

  1160. deep down

  1161. Jesus

  1162. says.

  1163. So what

  1164. does

  1165. your speech

  1166. indicate

  1167. about the

  1168. condition of

  1169. your heart

  1170. right now?

  1171. Do you

  1172. need to have

  1173. your heart

  1174. changed?

  1175. Be honest

  1176. with God.

  1177. He knows.

  1178. You know.

  1179. If you've

  1180. got a real

  1181. heart problem

  1182. that it's

  1183. never been

  1184. changed,

  1185. it's just

  1186. sinful,

  1187. it's just

  1188. selfish,

  1189. it's just

  1190. about the

  1191. world,

  1192. then admit

  1193. that to

  1194. God.

  1195. Cry out

  1196. to Him.

  1197. ask Him

  1198. to save

  1199. you,

  1200. to change

  1201. you.

  1202. Ask

  1203. Jesus to

  1204. be your

  1205. Savior as

  1206. you surrender

  1207. your life

  1208. to Him as

  1209. your Lord.

  1210. And if you

  1211. need to have

  1212. your heart

  1213. cleansed

  1214. afresh as a

  1215. Christian,

  1216. admit that

  1217. to God.

  1218. The book

  1219. of 1 John

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  1220. chapter 1

  1221. and verse

  1222. 9 tells us

  1223. as Christians

  1224. what we

  1225. need to do

  1226. when we

  1227. recognize

  1228. that we've

  1229. got a

  1230. dirty heart,

  1231. that we've

  1232. got sin

  1233. in our

  1234. life.

  1235. He says

  1236. if we

  1237. confess

  1238. our sins,

  1239. He,

  1240. that is God,

  1241. is faithful

  1242. and just

  1243. to forgive

  1244. us and

  1245. to cleanse

  1246. us of

  1247. all

  1248. unrighteousness.

  1249. Christian,

  1250. if there's

  1251. something in

  1252. your heart

  1253. that needs

  1254. to be

  1255. cleansed,

  1256. purified

  1257. today,

  1258. admit that

  1259. to God,

  1260. repent of

  1261. that sin,

  1262. come back

  1263. to Him

  1264. in confession.

  1265. He will

  1266. forgive you.

  1267. He will

  1268. cleanse you.

  1269. He'll give

  1270. you a fresh

  1271. start right

  1272. now as

  1273. His child.

  1274. He'll fill

  1275. you afresh

  1276. with His

  1277. Spirit,

  1278. but you've

  1279. got to call

  1280. upon Him

  1281. and mean

  1282. it in

  1283. order for

  1284. that to

  1285. happen.

  1286. Let's pray

  1287. again.

  1288. Dear God,

  1289. show us

  1290. what we

  1291. need to

  1292. do in

  1293. light of

  1294. all that

  1295. you have

  1296. said to

  1297. us in

  1298. this series

  1299. about the

  1300. power of

  1301. our words,

  1302. the seriousness

  1303. of our

  1304. words.

  1305. Father,

  1306. if there

  1307. are people

  1308. in this

  1309. room who

  1310. are not

  1311. Christians,

  1312. make it

  1313. clear and

  1314. make it

  1315. clear that

  1316. by Your

  1317. grace,

  1318. and through

  1319. faith in

  1320. Jesus,

  1321. they can

  1322. be saved,

  1323. forgiven,

  1324. made right

  1325. with You,

  1326. made a

  1327. child of

  1328. Yours right

  1329. now.

  1330. Work,

  1331. dear God,

  1332. to call

  1333. them to

  1334. faith in

  1335. Jesus now.

  1336. Lord,

  1337. show Christians

  1338. in this room

  1339. their words

  1340. matter.

  1341. And if

  1342. they're truly

  1343. Your children

  1344. with Your

  1345. Spirit living

  1346. in them,

  1347. they will

  1348. not be

  1349. able to

  1350. speak

  1351. ungodly

  1352. words or

  1353. live an

  1354. ungodly

  1355. life without

  1356. real conviction,

  1357. guilt,

  1358. experiencing

  1359. Your discipline.

  1360. But help

  1361. them to see,

  1362. dear God,

  1363. that they can

  1364. be forgiven,

  1365. the guilt

  1366. can be taken

  1367. away,

  1368. they can be

  1369. restored to

  1370. real fellowship

  1371. with You

  1372. right now.

  1373. If they

  1374. will confess,

  1375. seek Your

  1376. forgiveness,

  1377. turn from

  1378. their sin,

  1379. and renew

  1380. their commitment

  1381. to Jesus

  1382. as Lord

  1383. of their

  1384. life.

  1385. Show us

  1386. all what to

  1387. do,

  1388. how to

  1389. respond,

  1390. help us

  1391. to do it.

  1392. And then in

  1393. an attitude of

  1394. prayer,

  1395. you just do

  1396. it.

  1397. Do what the

  1398. Lord is telling

  1399. you to do.

  1400. I'll be here

  1401. at the front,

  1402. be happy to

  1403. pray with you,

  1404. talk with you,

  1405. you let me

  1406. know.

  1407. Let's just be

  1408. in an attitude

  1409. of prayer and

  1410. respond to the

  1411. Lord as He

  1412. speaks.
