  1. Well, this morning, I want us to talk about a problem,

  2. a major problem in this country, money problems.

  3. Many people struggle with money matters.

  4. A lot of it, really, as we're going to see here in a moment,

  5. a lot of it is with money management.

  6. And you see that because it happens across the board, all walks of life.

  7. Single people, I'm talking about single adults working, making good money.

  8. You see it in married couples with both of them working.

  9. You see money problems, obviously, in some people's lives who have low-paying jobs,

  10. but you see it a lot in people who have high-paying jobs.

  11. And money problems is no respecter of race.

  12. There's money problems in white and black homes and every race.

  13. The source of many people's problem is not that they don't have enough money.

  14. Now, it is for some people.

  15. But the source of the problem for many people is they don't know how to manage it

  16. or they're not willing to exercise the self-control and personal discipline necessary

  17. to wisely manage their resources.

  18. As I look back on my grandparents that I grew up right beside and knew very, very well,

  19. they were like another set of parents to me.

  20. They never had a lot of money.

  21. They both worked hard all their lives, but they both, neither one ever had high-paying jobs.

  22. My grandfather had a, what you'd call a decent-paying job,

  23. and my grandmother, it was not as good as his.

  24. But they never, never ceased, as far as I could tell,

  25. to live what they considered to be a comfortable life.

  26. Now, you understand what I said.

  27. They lived what I observed to be, they thought it was a comfortable life

  28. because it didn't take a whole lot to make them comfortable.

  29. It didn't take a whole lot to make them happy.

  30. They were content to work, to save, to give to their church, their family,

  31. and to neighbors in need, and to always live within their income.

  32. They lived 65 years in what, when they started out,

  33. was an old five-room frame house.

  34. They never owned two cars at the same time.

  35. They didn't take vacations.

  36. Now, I'm not exaggerating here.

  37. They always seemed to be just happy and content with who they were and what they had,

  38. never complained about what they didn't have,

  39. and never said anything of a negative nature about people who had more than them,

  40. people who were obviously better off than they were.

  41. They always managed to give to people in need and just to the people they wanted to.

  42. When I was in seminary, and we were in seminary for three years,

  43. every month, my grandmother sent me a letter with a $5 bill in that letter,

  44. every month for three years.

  45. And you know, even back, I know that's a long time ago,

  46. but even back then, back then, $5 was not a whole lot,

  47. but $5 meant a whole lot to us,

  48. knowing it came from Nan,

  49. because she just didn't have a lot.

  50. It was a gift of love more than anything.

  51. My grandfather died at age 88.

  52. Three years later, my grandmother died at age 85.

  53. They had $20,000 in the bank.

  54. They had 60 acres of land.

  55. They had no debt.

  56. But their real legacy was one of love, generosity,

  57. and a model of contentment.

  58. Now, I have known of other people,

  59. and so have you,

  60. who were very wealthy,

  61. but either wouldn't or couldn't manage their money wisely.

  62. Most of you in here know who Mike Tyson is.

  63. He's a world heavyweight boxing champion.

  64. Well, he made over $400 million in his boxing career.

  65. $400 million.

  66. When he filed for bankruptcy,

  67. he owed $27 million.

  68. I know everybody here knows Willie Nelson.

  69. You were always on my mind.

  70. I could sing that for you right now.

  71. He made, I don't want to put Brian,

  72. I don't want to make him feel bad, you know,

  73. if I got up here and sang that.

  74. If we have a fire, I will sing that,

  75. because that will evacuate the building very quickly.

  76. But Willie Nelson made millions of dollars

  77. during his country music hall of fame career.

  78. But he had to file for bankruptcy.

  79. You know why?

  80. Some of you, a lot of you maybe remember,

  81. the IRS found out he didn't pay his taxes.

  82. He owed $16 million in back taxes in 1990.

  83. To pay it off, he released this album

  84. with the title,

  85. The IRS Tapes,

  86. Who Will Buy My Memories?

  87. And he sold a lot of tapes,

  88. and every dollar went to pay his back taxes.

  89. Many people in this country

  90. who have serious financial problems

  91. work every day.

  92. Their problem is not that they don't make enough money.

  93. Their problem is that they don't wisely manage

  94. the money they have.

  95. They don't discipline themselves

  96. to live within their means.

  97. The book of Proverbs

  98. provides us with much wise counsel

  99. for dealing with financial issues,

  100. financial problems.

  101. In fact, this book

  102. just has a tremendous amount to say

  103. about money,

  104. all aspects of money.

  105. From any angle you want to look at money

  106. and wealth,

  107. Proverbs has something to say.

  108. We have spent the past eight weeks

  109. looking at

  110. what Proverbs has to say

  111. about our speech,

  112. our words,

  113. how we use our tongue,

  114. because there's so much there

  115. about that.

  116. Well, we cannot be in a study

  117. of the book of Proverbs

  118. and not touch on the subject of wealth.

  119. We're just going to do it in one message.

  120. I know it gets some people uptight

  121. to talk too much about money,

  122. so we won't do an eight-week series now,

  123. maybe later on.

  124. But this morning what I want us to do

  125. is look at what Proverbs has to say

  126. in a general kind of way.

  127. But I want to challenge you

  128. to read the book of Proverbs.

  129. There's 31 chapters.

  130. Read a chapter a day.

  131. And as you read through it,

  132. read through it,

  133. looking for what does it say

  134. about money,

  135. about material possessions,

  136. about wealth.

  137. Because you're going to find

  138. it has things in there

  139. about how to make it,

  140. how to save it,

  141. how to give it away,

  142. how to spend it.

  143. It also tells us some things

  144. about disciplining ourselves

  145. in the way that we use our money.

  146. It may be that

  147. if you have some real financial problems,

  148. in addition to reading the book of Proverbs,

  149. you need to find some real practical help

  150. by looking at some resources

  151. by somebody like Dave Ramsey.

  152. Crown Financial Ministries

  153. has good material.

  154. Ron Blue.

  155. There's a lot of things out there today

  156. written from a Christian perspective,

  157. a biblical perspective

  158. that will help a person

  159. get their spending under control,

  160. retire some debt,

  161. learn to save, invest,

  162. learn to manage their money wisely.

  163. And if you have that kind of issue,

  164. I encourage you to find someone.

  165. It may be a friend that you know.

  166. They may have less money than you do.

  167. They manage it more wisely.

  168. Talk to them.

  169. Seek help.

  170. But this morning,

  171. what I want us to do

  172. is look at what Proverbs has to say

  173. about money in terms of valuing it.

  174. We ought to value money.

  175. But also, we're going to see

  176. there's some warnings

  177. about what we do with money.

  178. There's even some dangers about money

  179. found in Proverbs.

  180. So, let's look at it.

  181. Let's look first of all

  182. at the value of money.

  183. And I want to say

  184. at the very beginning,

  185. money has value.

  186. And it's just foolish

  187. for some people,

  188. some Christians,

  189. well-meaning,

  190. to say things like,

  191. well, money doesn't matter to me.

  192. The Bible teaches

  193. that money matters.

  194. It has value.

  195. Money is an important part

  196. of our lives.

  197. In order for you to continue

  198. living where you're living,

  199. you've got to have money.

  200. You've got to either

  201. make a house payment

  202. or you're going to pay rent.

  203. If you've already paid

  204. your house off,

  205. you've still got to pay

  206. your utility bills.

  207. You've still got to maintain

  208. that home.

  209. There's going to be repairs

  210. that you have to make.

  211. If your car breaks down today,

  212. you're going to need money

  213. to get it repaired.

  214. You've got to go to work.

  215. You've got to go to school.

  216. You've got places to go

  217. and you need that car.

  218. So you've got to get it repaired.

  219. If your oven goes out today,

  220. many families won't know it

  221. for a month.

  222. And that,

  223. eating out all the time,

  224. may be contributing

  225. to some money problems.

  226. The writers of Proverbs

  227. understood the importance

  228. of money or wealth

  229. as it's sometimes referred to.

  230. And they made several observations

  231. about its value.

  232. That's what we're going to look at now.

  233. I want you to look at several things

  234. that Proverbs says

  235. that talks about money

  236. in a positive way.

  237. It's a valuable thing.

  238. Number one,

  239. money can be used

  240. to honor God.

  241. I want you to look at Proverbs 3,

    Proverbs 3:9

  242. verses 9 and 10.

  243. Honor the Lord with your wealth

  244. and with the first fruits

  245. of all your produce.

  246. Then your barns

  247. will be filled with plenty

  248. and your vats

  249. will be bursting with wine.

  250. We looked at that in detail

  251. back in November.

  252. November.

  253. But I want you to notice that

  254. and understand that

  255. everything the Bible says

  256. about the positive use

  257. of our wealth

  258. talks about putting God

  259. first with it.

  260. Honoring God

  261. with our wealth.

  262. Giving to God

  263. should be our first

  264. financial priority.

  265. Anyplace you look in Scripture

  266. and find something

  267. about our money,

  268. our wealth,

  269. our material things.

  270. What God gives us.

  271. We need to acknowledge Him

  272. as the source of it

  273. and we need to honor Him

  274. by giving back to Him

  275. a portion of it.

  276. But we've looked at that

  277. in detail in days gone by

  278. so let's move on this morning.

  279. Look more broadly

  280. at the subject.

  281. Number two,

  282. money can keep us

  283. from living in poverty

  284. which can become

  285. a stumbling block

  286. to a right relationship

  287. with God

  288. and I want to add

  289. and to other people.

  290. money is good.

  291. It can help us avoid

  292. living in poverty.

  293. Look at what it says

  294. in Proverbs chapter 30

    Proverbs 30:7–9

  295. verses 7 through 9.

  296. Two things I ask of you Lord.

  297. Do not refuse me

  298. before I die.

  299. Keep falsehood

  300. and lies

  301. far from me.

  302. We know

  303. that's important.

  304. We know that's

  305. an important prayer.

  306. Hopefully we have prayed

  307. something like that.

  308. But look at the next.

  309. Give me neither poverty

  310. nor riches

  311. but give me only

  312. my daily bread.

  313. I bet a lot of us

  314. in here

  315. we have prayed

  316. something along

  317. the lines of

  318. Lord

  319. keep me out of poverty.

  320. Give me this.

  321. Meet my needs.

  322. But how many of us

  323. have ever prayed

  324. give me neither poverty

  325. nor riches

  326. but give me only

  327. my daily bread.

  328. Verse 9

  329. move on.

  330. Otherwise

  331. I may have too much

  332. and disown you

  333. and say

  334. who is the Lord

  335. or I may become

  336. poor and still

  337. and so dishonor

  338. the name of my God.

  339. We're going to come back

  340. to this verse

  341. later in this message

  342. and look at that part

  343. that says

  344. give me neither poverty

  345. nor riches

  346. but only my daily bread.

  347. But right now

  348. I want us to look

  349. at that other part.

  350. Give me

  351. neither poverty

  352. and look at the last line.

  353. Or I may become

  354. poor and still

  355. and so dishonor

  356. the name of my God.

  357. Now I want to make

  358. something real clear here.

  359. The writer is not

  360. even implying

  361. that most poor people

  362. are thieves.

  363. Some of the most godly

  364. and honest people

  365. in the world

  366. are poor.

  367. In fact scripture

  368. repeatedly

  369. tells us

  370. God has a special place

  371. in his heart

  372. for the poor.

  373. And we're supposed to.

  374. We're supposed to be generous.

  375. We're supposed to meet

  376. the needs of those

  377. who are poor.

  378. So this is not talking about

  379. poor people

  380. are dishonest.

  381. but

  382. let's don't miss the point.

  383. Living in poverty

  384. can tempt someone

  385. to be dishonest

  386. to cheat

  387. or to steal.

  388. And you think about it.

  389. If your children

  390. are hungry

  391. your children

  392. don't have

  393. adequate clothes

  394. don't have

  395. a heavy coat

  396. to wear to school

  397. this week

  398. when it gets down

  399. in the low 20's

  400. if your children

  401. do not have

  402. any heat

  403. in their home

  404. there would be

  405. a great temptation

  406. to steal

  407. to lie

  408. to cheat

  409. to do whatever

  410. you could

  411. to keep your hungry

  412. child from starving

  413. to keep your

  414. cold child

  415. or spouse

  416. from being cold.

  417. that's just

  418. common sense.

  419. When things

  420. get bad

  421. there's all kinds

  422. of temptations

  423. even honest

  424. people

  425. to steal

  426. when necessary

  427. to meet

  428. some needs.

  429. And so this is

  430. legitimate

  431. prayer.

  432. He's saying

  433. here we should

  434. pray

  435. that we don't

  436. live in poverty

  437. and the idea

  438. is writing

  439. to God's people

  440. because we don't

  441. want to dishonor

  442. the Lord.

  443. We don't want

  444. to be unfaithful

  445. to Him

  446. and we don't

  447. want to defraud

  448. people.

  449. Money can keep

  450. us from living

  451. in poverty.

  452. That's good.

  453. Number three

  454. money used

  455. correctly

  456. can lead

  457. to a life

  458. of blessing.

  459. Look at this

  460. from Proverbs

  461. 11

  462. One man

  463. gives freely

  464. yet gains

  465. even more.

  466. Another

  467. withholds

  468. unduly

  469. but comes

  470. to poverty.

  471. A generous

  472. man will

  473. prosper.

  474. He who

  475. refreshes

  476. others

  477. will himself

  478. be refreshed.

  479. People curse

  480. the man

  481. who hoards

  482. grain

  483. but blessing

  484. crowns him

  485. who is willing

  486. to sell.

  487. This is similar

  488. to the law

  489. of the harvest.

  490. We reap

  491. what we sow.

  492. You understand

  493. Proverbs

  494. not promises.

  495. Proverbs

  496. are general

  497. statements

  498. of how life

  499. normally

  500. works.

  501. And the

  502. general

  503. teaching here

  504. is God

  505. blesses

  506. generosity.

  507. Generous

  508. people

  509. often

  510. prosper

  511. in all

  512. kinds of

  513. ways.

  514. They develop

  515. more wealth.

  516. They develop

  517. good relationships.

  518. look at the

  519. passage there.

  520. He's talking

  521. about someone

  522. who's been

  523. blessed and

  524. they're not

  525. stingy.

  526. They don't

  527. hoard what

  528. they have.

  529. They're willing

  530. to give

  531. or sell.

  532. They're willing

  533. to meet

  534. people's needs

  535. as they

  536. can.

  537. Some of

  538. the wealthiest

  539. people,

  540. some of the

  541. wealthiest

  542. Christians that I

  543. have ever known

  544. over the years

  545. were very,

  546. very generous.

  547. I've known

  548. some men

  549. in particular

  550. that God

  551. has just

  552. blessed them

  553. in what

  554. they did.

  555. Their goal

  556. in life

  557. was not just

  558. to be rich.

  559. Their goal

  560. in life

  561. was to do

  562. something,

  563. one particular

  564. job,

  565. this career

  566. path they

  567. took,

  568. and God

  569. blessed them

  570. with real

  571. wealth.

  572. And these

  573. men I'm

  574. thinking about,

  575. they were

  576. serious-minded

  577. Christians.

  578. They truly

  579. loved the

  580. Lord.

  581. They looked

  582. at what

  583. they had.

  584. It was a

  585. blessing from

  586. Him.

  587. And they

  588. sought to

  589. bless as

  590. many people

  591. as they,

  592. let me

  593. rephrase it.

  594. They sought

  595. to bless

  596. other people

  597. that were

  598. obviously in

  599. need.

  600. They were a

  601. blessing a lot

  602. of times behind

  603. the scene.

  604. And I truly

  605. believe you

  606. can see in

  607. their lives

  608. how God

  609. blessed them

  610. and used

  611. them to touch

  612. some

  613. children's

  614. homes,

  615. for an

  616. example,

  617. to touch

  618. some single

  619. parents who

  620. needed help

  621. to do some

  622. things for

  623. their church

  624. that they

  625. could do

  626. and the

  627. church could

  628. benefit from.

  629. Money,

  630. as you see

  631. that,

  632. used correctly

  633. can lead to

  634. a life of

  635. blessing for

  636. the one who

  637. has it,

  638. but oftentimes

  639. it's a life

  640. of blessing

  641. for the one

  642. who has it

  643. because he's

  644. willing or

  645. she's willing

  646. to be a

  647. blessing to

  648. other people.

  649. Number four,

  650. money can

  651. give us a

  652. certain degree

  653. of security.

  654. We're going to

  655. come back to

  656. this idea about

  657. security in a

  658. minute, but I

  659. want you to

  660. look at it.

  661. Money can

  662. give us a

  663. certain degree

  664. of security.

  665. Look in

  666. chapter 10,

  667. verse 15.

  668. The wealth

  669. of the rich

  670. is their

  671. fortified city,

  672. but poverty

  673. is the ruin

  674. of the poor.

  675. The wealth

  676. of the rich

  677. is their

  678. fortified city.

  679. It's talking

  680. about somebody

  681. who has money

  682. because they've

  683. saved, they've

  684. invested, they've

  685. managed it well.

  686. We need to learn

  687. to save for both

  688. short-term and

  689. long-term need.

  690. It's a blessing

  691. for you to so

  692. manage your

  693. money that when

  694. an emergency

  695. arises, you've

  696. got the money

  697. to pay for it,

  698. to take care of

  699. the need.

  700. It is a blessing

  701. for you to save

  702. and have a

  703. retirement account

  704. building up so

  705. that when the day

  706. comes and you

  707. can't work, you

  708. will have a way

  709. to have a living,

  710. to have your

  711. needs met.

  712. These kinds

  713. of things,

  714. that's the kind

  715. of security

  716. that money

  717. can provide

  718. for us.

  719. But hold that

  720. thought.

  721. That's not the

  722. last thing Proverbs

  723. says along this

  724. line.

  725. Proverbs teaches

  726. us that it's

  727. wise for us to

  728. value money

  729. and wealth

  730. to a degree

  731. because it

  732. does have an

  733. important place

  734. in our lives.

  735. We need to

  736. value money

  737. enough to

  738. see it as a

  739. precious resource.

  740. Something not

  741. to squander.

  742. Something not

  743. to just take

  744. lightly.

  745. Something that

  746. needs to be

  747. managed well,

  748. managed wisely.

  749. If you just

  750. read through the

  751. book of Proverbs

  752. you're going to

  753. see things like

  754. the importance

  755. of working

  756. and acquiring

  757. money or wealth

  758. honestly.

  759. We're not going

  760. to go, we're not

  761. going to spend a

  762. whole week on

  763. this or anything

  764. like this.

  765. Proverbs has a

  766. lot to say,

  767. just absolutely

  768. condemning

  769. laziness.

  770. Referring to such

  771. person as a

  772. sluggard.

  773. You don't

  774. want to be

  775. known as a

  776. sluggard type

  777. person.

  778. You don't

  779. want to be

  780. lazy.

  781. You don't

  782. want to be a

  783. bum who

  784. refuses to

  785. take responsibility

  786. to work,

  787. to save,

  788. to try to

  789. take care of

  790. yourself and

  791. your family and

  792. your needs.

  793. God made

  794. us in such

  795. a way in

  796. His image to

  797. be responsible.

  798. to manage

  799. His creation,

  800. to manage our

  801. own resources

  802. and with

  803. dependence upon

  804. Him, provide

  805. for ourselves

  806. and our

  807. families.

  808. That is

  809. important.

  810. We need to

  811. learn to work,

  812. to work and

  813. make money

  814. honestly.

  815. We need to

  816. learn to save,

  817. to invest it

  818. wisely.

  819. We need to

  820. learn to be

  821. generous in

  822. giving to God

  823. and to people

  824. in need.

  825. We need to

  826. learn to spend

  827. what we spend

  828. wisely.

  829. We need to

  830. know when to

  831. borrow cautiously

  832. and wisely.

  833. Debt is a

  834. trap.

  835. Debt is

  836. part of the

  837. reasons why

  838. people are

  839. having so many

  840. money problems,

  841. living above

  842. their means.

  843. Proverbs warns

  844. us, God's

  845. word warns us

  846. about such

  847. things.

  848. I want to be

  849. clear.

  850. God does not

  851. condemn the

  852. accumulation of

  853. wealth.

  854. wealth.

  855. God does not

  856. condemn wealthy

  857. people.

  858. But he does

  859. hold all of us

  860. responsible for

  861. what he gives

  862. us.

  863. He holds us

  864. responsible for

  865. the wealth that

  866. he entrusts to

  867. our care.

  868. He expects us to

  869. be good stewards,

  870. good managers.

  871. I want you to

  872. look at what I

  873. think is sort of

  874. a summary statement

  875. of how we

  876. should think of

  877. wealth and

  878. wealthy people.

  879. In 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  880. chapter 6,

  881. Paul is

  882. writing to

  883. Timothy,

  884. who is sort of

  885. the overseer of

  886. the church at

  887. Ephesus,

  888. that obviously

  889. has some

  890. wealthy people

  891. in it.

  892. Look at what

  893. he says.

  894. As for the

  895. rich in this

  896. present age,

  897. charge them

  898. not to be

  899. haughty,

  900. nor to set

  901. their hopes

  902. on the

  903. uncertainty of

  904. riches,

  905. but on God

  906. who richly

  907. provides us

  908. with everything

  909. to enjoy.

  910. Notice that.

  911. Just stop for a

  912. moment.

  913. Rich people

  914. should not be

  915. prideful,

  916. should not

  917. put their

  918. hope on the

  919. uncertainty of

  920. riches.

  921. Our hope

  922. should be on

  923. God, the

  924. one who

  925. provides us

  926. with the

  927. riches.

  928. But look,

  929. he provides

  930. us with these

  931. things to

  932. enjoy.

  933. If you

  934. work, you

  935. have income,

  936. you invest,

  937. you have income,

  938. however it is,

  939. there's nothing

  940. wrong with

  941. using it wisely,

  942. spending it,

  943. and enjoying

  944. what, the

  945. things that

  946. money can

  947. buy.

  948. That's not

  949. wrong.

  950. That's not

  951. sinful.

  952. We shouldn't

  953. have to

  954. explain every

  955. dollar we

  956. spend,

  957. especially on

  958. something that

  959. might bring us

  960. joy or

  961. pleasure, or

  962. someone else's

  963. joy or

  964. pleasure.

  965. God gives

  966. us, richly

  967. provides us with

  968. everything to

  969. enjoy.

  970. But look at

  971. the rest of

  972. it.

  973. Talking about

  974. people who

  975. have something,

  976. and in light

  977. of the world,

  978. that's all of

  979. us in here,

  980. by the way.

  981. They are to

  982. do good, to

  983. be rich in

  984. good works, to

  985. be generous and

  986. ready to share,

  987. thus storing up

  988. treasure for

  989. themselves as a

  990. good foundation

  991. for the future.

  992. That's talking

  993. about heaven.

  994. so that they

  995. may take hold

  996. of that which

  997. is truly life.

  998. If God

  999. blesses you with

  1000. resources, use

  1001. it in a way

  1002. that He will

  1003. consider it to

  1004. be good.

  1005. Be generous.

  1006. Be ready to

  1007. give.

  1008. Our wisely

  1009. using the

  1010. resources God

  1011. gives us.

  1012. Our having the

  1013. right attitude

  1014. toward it.

  1015. Using it wisely.

  1016. Using it to

  1017. benefit others.

  1018. Use it to

  1019. honor God.

  1020. That's helping

  1021. us.

  1022. That's a part

  1023. of, only a

  1024. part of, storing

  1025. up treasures in

  1026. heaven for one

  1027. day.

  1028. That's what He's

  1029. saying here.

  1030. A good summary

  1031. statement.

  1032. Look at it.

  1033. Write it down.

  1034. 1 Timothy 6, 17

  1035. through 19.

  1036. Money has

  1037. value.

  1038. Christians should

  1039. not say foolish

  1040. things like,

  1041. money doesn't

  1042. matter.

  1043. I don't care

  1044. about it.

  1045. We should

  1046. care.

  1047. It's important.

  1048. But money does

  1049. not have ultimate

  1050. value.

  1051. And the truth

  1052. is there are

  1053. more warnings

  1054. in the Bible

  1055. and in Proverbs

  1056. about the

  1057. limitations of

  1058. wealth and the

  1059. dangers of wealth

  1060. than anything else.

  1061. So let's look now

  1062. at the limitations

  1063. and dangers of

  1064. money.

  1065. Look at two

  1066. things.

  1067. Number one,

  1068. money can give

  1069. us false

  1070. security.

  1071. We talked about

  1072. security a while

  1073. ago.

  1074. Money can give

  1075. us a certain

  1076. level of security,

  1077. but money can

  1078. also give us

  1079. false security.

  1080. We saw in

  1081. Proverbs 10, 15

  1082. that wealth can

  1083. give us a certain

  1084. degree of security,

  1085. but it's not

  1086. high level security.

  1087. Look at

  1088. Proverbs 18.

  1089. The name of the

  1090. Lord is a fortified

  1091. tower.

  1092. The righteous run

  1093. to it and are

  1094. safe.

  1095. The wealth of the

  1096. rich is their

  1097. fortified city.

  1098. They imagine it a

  1099. wall too high to

  1100. scale.

  1101. These verses

  1102. contrast the

  1103. security of a

  1104. true godly

  1105. person with the

  1106. imagined security

  1107. of a rich

  1108. person who's

  1109. not concerned

  1110. about being a

  1111. godly person.

  1112. Some people

  1113. think of money

  1114. or wealth being

  1115. strong and

  1116. secure like a

  1117. wall that will

  1118. always protect

  1119. us.

  1120. But money is

  1121. not that way.

  1122. Money is very

  1123. limited in what

1124. it can do for us.

  1125. I don't know who

  1126. came up with what

  1127. I'm about to share,

1128. what will be on the

  1129. screen, but it's

  1130. good.

  1131. Look at it.

  1132. What money can

  1133. and cannot do.

  1134. Money can buy a

  1135. house but not a

  1136. home.

  1137. Money can buy a

  1138. bed but not sleep.

  1139. Money can buy a

  1140. clock but not time.

  1141. Money can buy a

  1142. book but not

  1143. knowledge.

  1144. Money can buy

  1145. medicine but not

  1146. health.

  1147. Money can buy

  1148. sex but not love.

  1149. Money can buy

  1150. insurance but not

  1151. safety.

  1152. There's a lot of

  1153. things money can

  1154. do.

  1155. But the most

  1156. important things

  1157. in all of life,

  1158. money cannot buy.

  1159. Our ultimate

  1160. source of security

  1161. is found in Jesus

  1162. Christ and Him

  1163. alone.

  1164. I want you to

  1165. understand that.

  1166. Our ultimate

  1167. source of security

  1168. is found in having

  1169. a right relationship

  1170. with Jesus Christ.

1171. He is the only one

  1172. who can provide us

  1173. with eternal

  1174. security.

  1175. And we should

  1176. never, must never

  1177. forget that.

  1178. Money is not only

  1179. limited what it can

  1180. provide, money also

  1181. has many dangers

  1182. associated with it.

1183. And if you will read

  1184. through the book of

  1185. Proverbs, you will

  1186. find several but I

1187. want to look at the

  1188. one that's at the

  1189. top of the list.

  1190. Money can become

  1191. our God.

  1192. Let's go back now

  1193. to Proverbs 30.

  1194. Two things I ask

  1195. of you, Lord.

  1196. Do not refuse me

  1197. before I die.

  1198. Keep falsehood and

  1199. lies far from me.

  1200. Give me neither

  1201. poverty nor riches,

  1202. but give me only

  1203. my daily bread.

  1204. Otherwise I may have

  1205. too much and disown

  1206. you and say,

  1207. who is the Lord?

  1208. The writer of

  1209. Proverbs knew that

  1210. having too much

  1211. can ruin a person's

  1212. life.

  1213. Having too much

  1214. for some people

1215. can be just as bad

  1216. or even worse than

  1217. having too little.

  1218. I have seen, and I'm

  1219. sure you have too,

  1220. how people change

  1221. as they make more

  1222. money and become

  1223. more prosperous.

  1224. There's one person

1225. that sticks out in my

  1226. past.

  1227. He was committed,

  1228. not in this church,

  1229. not in this county.

  1230. Don't try to put a

1231. name and face to it.

  1232. You cannot.

  1233. But this one man

1234. was in church with us,

  1235. dedicated Christian,

  1236. involved in everything,

  1237. great family.

1238. But he was in a

  1239. profession where he

1240. could move up and do

1241. very well, and he did.

  1242. Sharp guy.

  1243. Worked hard.

  1244. And I noticed over

  1245. several years,

  1246. as he advanced up

  1247. the ladder of success

  1248. at his company,

  1249. he fell down the

  1250. ladder of church

  1251. involvement.

  1252. I don't know what was

  1253. going on in his

  1254. personal life,

  1255. but it seemed it

  1256. wasn't just his

  1257. church involvement

  1258. that was sliding.

  1259. It seemed like it

  1260. was his whole

  1261. relationship with

  1262. God.

  1263. Because as he

  1264. dropped out,

  1265. he avoided me,

  1266. and he avoided

  1267. some others in the

  1268. church that he had

  1269. served in various

  1270. ways with.

  1271. And eventually,

  1272. he and his

  1273. family dropped

  1274. out of church.

  1275. Success hurt him

  1276. spiritually.

  1277. Success hurt him

  1278. in more ways

  1279. than it really

  1280. helped him.

  1281. Now let me say,

  1282. that's not true

  1283. about everybody

  1284. who does well.

  1285. That may not be

  1286. true about anyone

  1287. you know.

  1288. But it does happen.

  1289. For some people,

  1290. money pushes God

  1291. out of their life.

  1292. Money becomes,

  1293. see,

  1294. their love,

  1295. their joy,

  1296. their goal,

  1297. money.

  1298. For some people,

  1299. money really does

  1300. become their God.

  1301. That's why Jesus

  1302. warns us

  1303. about the dangers

  1304. of money in Matthew

  1305. 6.

  1306. Look at it.

  1307. Jesus said this,

  1308. no one can

  1309. serve two masters.

  1310. For either he will

  1311. hate the one

  1312. and love the other,

  1313. or he will be

  1314. devoted to the one

  1315. and despise the other.

  1316. You cannot serve

  1317. God and money.

  1318. When it comes to

  1319. your relationship

  1320. with God

  1321. and your relationship

  1322. with money,

  1323. God must be

  1324. first,

  1325. supreme.

  1326. He must be

  1327. Lord,

  1328. not money.

  1329. Proverbs helps us

  1330. to see that there

  1331. is value in money

  1332. and there's

  1333. absolutely nothing

  1334. wrong with acquiring

  1335. wealth as long

  1336. as we do it

  1337. the right way,

  1338. God's way.

1339. So I want to ask

  1340. you real quickly

  1341. here.

  1342. Are you honoring

  1343. God

  1344. with your wealth?

  1345. Think about it

  1346. this way.

  1347. Are you honoring

  1348. God in the way

  1349. that you are

  1350. acquiring your wealth?

  1351. In the way that

  1352. you're saving it

  1353. and investing it?

  1354. Are you honoring

  1355. God in the way

  1356. that you give it

  1357. to him and

  1358. other people?

  1359. Are you honoring

  1360. God in the way

  1361. that you spend

  1362. your money?

  1363. You know,

  1364. sometimes I think

  1365. we as Christians,

  1366. some Christians,

  1367. have a mistaken

  1368. notion about tithing.

  1369. The idea,

  1370. well,

  1371. God gets 10%,

  1372. another 90%

  1373. is mine.

  1374. No,

  1375. that's not true

  1376. at all.

  1377. God owns it

  1378. all.

  1379. 100%.

  1380. And if you

  1381. give faithfully

  1382. a tithe of all

  1383. that you make,

  1384. good.

  1385. But you need

  1386. to seek

  1387. his wisdom

  1388. as you spend

  1389. the other 90%.

  1390. And do that

  1391. in a way

  1392. that honors him

  1393. and serves his

  1394. purpose for your

  1395. life.

  1396. Are you honoring

  1397. God in the way

  1398. you spend your

  1399. money?

  1400. Are you honoring

  1401. God in the way

  1402. that you borrow

  1403. money?

  1404. Let's back up

  1405. a little bit.

  1406. Are you honoring

  1407. God in the way

  1408. you think

  1409. of money?

  1410. Proverbs also

  1411. points out the

  1412. limitations and

  1413. dangers

  1414. of money.

  1415. The truth is

  1416. money is very

  1417. limited.

  1418. It cannot buy

  1419. the things that

  1420. we value most

  1421. or the things

  1422. we should value

  1423. most.

  1424. That's a right

  1425. relationship with

  1426. God, a right

  1427. relationship with

  1428. other people.

  1429. You know,

  1430. many people have

  1431. found out the

  1432. hard way

  1433. that money

  1434. is causing

  1435. more problems

  1436. in their life,

  1437. in their

  1438. relationships,

  1439. both with God

  1440. and others

  1441. than anything

  1442. else.

  1443. that's why

  1444. money is

  1445. dangerous.

  1446. It can blind

  1447. us and cause

  1448. us to lose

  1449. sight of what

  1450. really and truly

  1451. matters,

  1452. of what our

  1453. priorities really

  1454. ought to be.

  1455. Do you have the

  1456. right perspective

  1457. on money?

  1458. Is money

  1459. serving you

  1460. or are you

  1461. serving it?

  1462. is money a

  1463. tool in your

  1464. life or is

  1465. money your

  1466. God?

  1467. A Christian

  1468. organization ran

  1469. an ad in a

  1470. magazine with a

  1471. picture of

  1472. stacks of

  1473. cash, stacks

  1474. of $100 bills,

  1475. $50 bills,

  1476. $20 bills,

  1477. $10 bills.

  1478. And the

  1479. caption beneath

  1480. the picture read

  1481. this,

  1482. throughout

  1483. history,

  1484. countless

  1485. Christians have

  1486. fallen victim

  1487. to the power

  1488. of money.

  1489. So if you've

  1490. been struggling

  1491. to find the

  1492. balance between

  1493. finance and

  1494. faith,

  1495. remember this,

  1496. real security

  1497. is not a matter

  1498. of what's in

  1499. your pocket,

  1500. but who's in

  1501. your heart.

  1502. The most

  1503. important thing

  1504. right now

  1505. is not what

  1506. we've got in

  1507. our pocket,

  1508. in our wallet,

  1509. or in our

  1510. bank account,

  1511. or investment

  1512. account.

  1513. The most

  1514. important thing

  1515. is that we

  1516. have a right

  1517. relationship with

  1518. God through

  1519. faith in Jesus

  1520. Christ.

  1521. Make sure

  1522. that your

  1523. God is the

  1524. living God,

  1525. the Father of

  1526. our Lord Jesus

  1527. Christ.

  1528. Make sure your

  1529. Lord is Christ

  1530. Jesus,

  1531. not money.

  1532. Let's pray

  1533. together.

  1534. Dear God,

  1535. all of us in

  1536. this room,

  1537. have,

  1538. need,

  1539. and use

  1540. money.

  1541. We are

  1542. accumulating

  1543. wealth.

  1544. Father,

  1545. help us to

  1546. see that it

  1547. can be very

  1548. good,

  1549. and that it

  1550. is valuable.

  1551. But Lord,

  1552. help us to

  1553. clearly see it

  1554. has many

  1555. limitations,

  1556. and it can

  1557. be very,

  1558. very dangerous.

  1559. So Lord,

  1560. we pray that

  1561. you will teach

  1562. us,

  1563. or convict us,

  1564. or confirm to

  1565. us what we

  1566. need to know,

  1567. experience right

  1568. now concerning

  1569. concerning our

  1570. attitude and

  1571. actions toward

  1572. money and

  1573. wealth.

  1574. And Lord,

  1575. help us to

  1576. respond to

  1577. you, to

  1578. make commitments,

  1579. decisions,

  1580. changes that

  1581. will enable us

  1582. to leave here

  1583. pleasing you

  1584. with our

  1585. attitude toward

  1586. and actions

  1587. with our

  1588. money.

  1589. And then in

  1590. an attitude of

  1591. prayer, listen

  1592. to the Lord and

  1593. respond to him.

  1594. Please do what

  1595. he wants you to

  1596. do.

  1597. I'd be happy to

  1598. pray with you

  1599. here at the

  1600. front if you

  1601. want to come

  1602. during this

  1603. time.

  1604. But just do

  1605. what God's

  1606. telling you to

  1607. do about your

  1608. money and wealth.
