  1. Who is the wisest person to ever live?

  2. We're going to stay here until somebody answers.

  3. Solomon.

  4. I heard Angie Hester say, Brian Hester.

  5. You can stop laughing now.

  6. Wisest person to ever live?

  7. King Solomon.

  8. Now, when you read what various Bible writers say about him

  9. and what he personally wrote in the book of Proverbs in particular,

  10. there is no doubt that he was smart and well-educated.

  11. But Solomon's wisdom was due to more than just his natural intellect.

  12. Solomon had a God-given wisdom that provided him with the spiritual insight to understand how God intends for life to work in this world.

  13. Now, think about it.

  14. Solomon was a highly intelligent individual.

  15. He had a great education.

  16. He had all kinds of life experiences.

  17. But it was because God gave him this special endowment of wisdom that he was able to write the kind of things that he did in the book of Proverbs that deal with how we really live our lives.

  18. I mean, he gave us wisdom as we've seen over the last several weeks about how God intends for us to use our tongue

  19. and how he intends for us not to use it.

  20. We've seen such things of how to value money, how to value money, how not to value it.

  21. There's a lot that Solomon taught about having healthy relationships.

  22. Having healthy relationships with people you're close to, family members, neighbors.

  23. He wrote a lot about developing a strong, healthy work ethic, not being lazy.

  24. Proverbs, the major wisdom writing of the Old Testament, was written by someone that God had given him something special.

  25. Special insight and wisdom.

  26. Now, how did that happen?

  27. How did it come about that God gave this man such wisdom?

  28. Well, we read about it in the book of 1 Kings.

  29. I want you to turn with me, and we're going to stay there throughout this message.

  30. The book of 1 Kings, chapter 3.

    1 Kings 3 chapter mention

  31. What we're going to do today and next week,

  32. we're going to conclude our study of the book of Proverbs

  33. by looking at Solomon.

  34. We're going to look a little bit at his life,

  35. do a sort of a brief character study today and next week.

  36. Today, we're going to look at Solomon as a model of the kind of person God blesses with wisdom.

  37. Today, this is a very positive message.

  38. We're holding Solomon up as a model, as an example of the kind of person God blesses with wisdom.

  39. Next week, we're going to take a totally different look at this same man.

  40. Now, we need to understand here at the beginning, Solomon was unique.

  41. We're not going to be little Solomons no matter what.

  42. God chose him to be king over his chosen people, the people of Israel.

  43. You are not going to be king.

  44. You are not going to be queen in the days to come.

  45. I don't want to burst anybody's bubble.

  46. That's just not going to happen.

  47. Solomon also was, what you might say,

  48. specially endowed with God-given wisdom.

  49. I mean, he was so favored by God, so gifted,

  50. that he really is considered the wisest man who ever lived.

  51. You nor I are ever going to acquire that kind of wisdom.

  52. No one's going to ever go out and write books about your and my wisdom.

  53. We're not going to be like Solomon in this respect.

  54. But we can.

  55. We can be wise to some degree.

  56. That's why God gave us the book of Proverbs and the other 65 books of the Bible

  57. God wants us to grow in our knowledge, our wisdom, our understanding of him and life

  58. and how to live life in a way that pleases him.

  59. I want us to look this morning in 1 Kings 3, verses 1 through 15,

    1 Kings 3:1–15

  60. some of the character qualities found in Solomon that were an obvious prerequisite

  61. to his receiving this special wisdom from God.

  62. And as we go through this,

  63. we need to understand that these same character qualities

  64. need to be found in our lives if we expect to receive God's wisdom

  65. or grow in the development of wisdom.

  66. So let's go ahead and read 1 Kings 3, verses 1 through 15.

    1 Kings 3:1–15

  67. Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

  68. He took Pharaoh's daughter and brought her into the city of David

  69. until he had finished building his own house

  70. and the house of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem.

  71. The people were sacrificing at the high places, however,

  72. because no house had yet been built for the name of the Lord.

  73. Solomon loved the Lord.

  74. Walking in the statutes of David his father,

  75. only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places.

  76. And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there,

  77. for that was the great high place.

  78. Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

  79. At Gibeon, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night,

  80. and God said,

  81. Ask what I shall give you.

  82. In other words, ask what do you want me to give you?

  83. And Solomon said,

  84. You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David, my father,

  85. because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness,

  86. and in uprightness of heart towards you.

  87. Let's just pause for a moment.

  88. Most of you here are familiar with the life of David.

  89. David was not a perfect model of any of those things.

  90. David is known for some major moral failures in his life.

  91. But David never ceased to be known as the man after God's own heart.

  92. David is still considered here as one who walked in faithfulness,

  93. in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart before God.

  94. That should give us hope.

  95. That should give us an encouragement.

  96. We do fail God, but God doesn't disqualify His people when they fail,

  97. if they're truly His,

  98. because they'll repent.

  99. They'll come back to Him.

  100. They'll renew their faith and their commitment.

  101. David did such things.

  102. Let's read on.

  103. And you have kept for Him this great and steadfast love,

  104. and have given Him a son to sit on His throne this day.

  105. And now, O Lord my God,

  106. you have made your servant king in place of my father David,

  107. in place of David my father.

  108. Although I am but a little child,

  109. I do not know how to go out or come in.

  110. And your servant is in the midst of your people,

  111. whom you have chosen a great people,

  112. too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.

  113. Give your servant, therefore, an understanding mind

  114. to govern your people,

  115. that I may discern between good and evil.

  116. For who is able to govern this, your great people?

  117. It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.

  118. And God said to him,

  119. Because you have asked this,

  120. and have not asked for yourself long life or riches,

  121. or the life of your enemies,

  122. but have asked for yourself understanding

  123. to discern what is right,

  124. behold, I now do according to your word.

  125. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind,

  126. so that none like you has ever been before you,

  127. and none like you shall arise after you.

  128. I give you also what you have not asked,

  129. both riches and honor,

  130. so that no other king shall compare with you all your days.

  131. And if you will walk in my ways,

  132. notice here,

  133. there's a requirement.

  134. And if you will walk in my ways,

  135. keeping my statutes and my commandments,

  136. as your father David walked,

  137. then I will lengthen your days.

  138. And Solomon awoke,

  139. and behold,

  140. it was a dream.

  141. Then he came to Jerusalem

  142. and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord,

  143. and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings,

  144. and made a feast for all of his servants.

  145. What we're going to look for in these verses

  146. are the character qualities

  147. that we should consider to be prerequisites

  148. for receiving God's gift of wisdom.

  149. Number one,

  150. God's wisdom is a gift

  151. given to those who love God wholeheartedly.

  152. That's what we see in verses 3 through 6.

  153. Look at verse 3 in particular.

  154. It says that Solomon loved the Lord,

  155. walking in the statutes of David, his father.

  156. This is a more powerful statement

  157. than it really appears to be,

  158. as Philip Ryken,

  159. who's now president of Wheaton College,

  160. points out in his book on Solomon.

  161. Look at what he's saying.

  162. He's describing how Solomon loved the Lord.

  163. He says,

  164. this is virtually the highest praise

  165. that any person could ever receive.

  166. In fact,

  167. Solomon is the only man in the entire Bible

  168. who is said to have loved the Lord

  169. in so many words.

  170. He's not saying that Solomon's the only person in the Bible

  171. who ever loved God,

  172. who ever talked about loving God,

  173. but he is saying

  174. this is a unique way of describing Solomon,

  175. saying that Solomon,

  176. just real simply,

  177. Solomon loved the Lord.

  178. He's describing a genuine,

  179. heartfelt love that this man had for God,

  180. and it wasn't just an emotional feeling.

  181. You know,

  182. a lot of people have emotional feelings

  183. related to God or spiritual things.

  184. Something happens in their life,

  185. and it causes an emotional crisis.

  186. Some people maybe hear a certain song,

  187. and it affects them emotionally.

  188. Some people come to a worship service,

  189. maybe something that's said touches them in the moment.

  190. A lot of people have emotional feelings,

  191. and they'll talk about their love for God

  192. or their belief in God,

  193. but when the emotions subside,

  194. that love can't be found.

  195. Those feelings don't remain.

  196. Solomon had a genuine, heartfelt love for God

  197. that he expressed in tangible ways.

  198. Note in verse 4,

  199. he is described as worshiping God,

  200. and as a part of his worship,

  201. he offered costly sacrifices.

  202. Look at it in verse 4.

  203. The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there,

  204. for that was the great high place.

  205. Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings

  206. on that altar.

  207. Now, I want you to think about this.

  208. He's just been described as loving God,

  209. He's now being described as worshiping God.

  210. As a part of his worship,

  211. he offered an extravagant, costly sacrifice,

  212. or numerous sacrifices, actually.

  213. I want you to think about the great expense

  214. that would have been.

  215. Think about how much trouble the labor involved

  216. in sacrificing a thousand animals.

  217. But this was intentional.

  218. Solomon wanted to demonstrate his love to God

  219. by offering to God something that was valuable to him,

  220. something that cost him something.

  221. You know, it appears that God accepted Solomon's worship

  222. as an expression of genuine love

  223. by the way God responds in verse 5.

  224. Look at that.

  225. At Gibeon,

  226. the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night,

  227. and God said,

  228. Ask what I shall give you.

  229. Ask what you want.

  230. If God was not pleased with the sacrifice Solomon has made,

  231. sacrifices he's been making,

  232. why would he offer such?

  233. Well, Solomon continues his heartfelt worship

  234. and prayer to God in verse 6.

  235. Look at that.

  236. And Solomon said,

  237. You have shown great and steadfast love

  238. to your servant David my father,

  239. because he walked before you in faithfulness,

  240. in righteousness,

  241. and in uprightness of heart towards you.

  242. And you've kept for him this great and steadfast love,

  243. and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day.

  244. He's talking about himself.

  245. Solomon is praising God

  246. for the faithful love that God has shown

  247. to his father David

  248. in allowing Solomon to take over,

  249. in allowing Solomon to succeed his father

  250. as king over all of Israel.

  251. What we see in the way that Solomon declared

  252. and demonstrated his love for God

  253. is a model for how we should express our love for God.

  254. I want you to think about

  255. how you express your love to God.

  256. Rehearse.

  257. Think about it for a moment.

  258. Do you regularly express your love to God in words?

  259. Do you talk to God,

  260. and do you say to him things like,

  261. I love you?

  262. I love you, Lord.

  263. I love you, Jesus.

  264. If you have a relationship with someone,

  265. I mean, if you have a real relationship

  266. with your spouse, your children,

  267. different people,

  268. don't you tell them,

  269. at least every now and then,

  270. that you love them?

  271. Isn't it natural

  272. to look at someone that you really do love,

  273. you really do care about,

  274. and say to them,

  275. I love you.

  276. You want to communicate that verbally

  277. what Solomon did in his relationship with God.

  278. And I think if we really and truly

  279. have a relationship with our Heavenly Father,

  280. with Almighty God,

  281. if He is our Heavenly Father,

  282. if Jesus Christ really is our Savior and our Lord,

  283. it should just be natural

  284. for us to want to say to the Lord Jesus,

  285. to our Heavenly Father,

  286. I love you.

  287. Do you regularly do that?

  288. If you don't,

  289. why don't you?

  290. Do you regularly express your love to God

  291. in your actions?

  292. Solomon did by the way he worshipped God.

  293. He worshipped God privately.

  294. He worshipped God publicly.

  295. Do you?

  296. I mean, we're here in a worship service.

  297. Is this something that you normally do,

  298. you want to do,

  299. gather together with God's people

  300. and join together

  301. to worship and praise God

  302. because you love Him?

  303. Do you do this privately?

  304. Get up in the morning,

  305. around lunchtime,

  306. at night?

  307. Do you regularly

  308. just get before the Lord,

  309. maybe driving down the road for you

  310. or walking somewhere,

  311. and you just have a time of personal worship,

  312. praise,

  313. thanking God?

  314. Do you do like Solomon?

  315. Do you faithfully give to God offerings,

  316. offerings that cost you something?

  317. I've been in church all my life.

  318. There's never been a time

  319. when I didn't go to church as a kid.

  320. Some of my earliest remembrances of people,

  321. preachers preaching on giving,

  322. I remember being,

  323. hearing something like this.

  324. A preacher described our giving

  325. in terms of giving a tithe

  326. or a tip to God.

  327. For some reason,

  328. it's always stuck in my mind.

  329. Is your giving

  330. a tithe

  331. or is it a tip?

  332. Which most accurately

  333. describes you?

  334. But I don't want you to think

  335. that giving offerings

  336. is the only way we can visibly

  337. express our love to God.

  338. It is one way,

  339. but it's certainly not

  340. even the

  341. most primary way,

  342. the most important way.

  343. Jesus made it clear

  344. that the most important way

  345. we can express our love to God

  346. is by

  347. obeying Him.

  348. Look with me.

  349. There's three verses

  350. I want to look at real quickly

  351. from John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  352. I mean,

  353. how much

  354. clearer

  355. and forcefully

  356. could He say this

  357. than

  358. bam, bam, bam?

  359. If you love me,

  360. you'll keep my commandments.

  361. Whoever has my commandments

  362. and keeps them,

  363. he it is who loves me.

  364. Jesus answered him,

  365. if anyone loves me,

  366. he will keep my word.

  367. It's good

  368. if you have a heartfelt

  369. love for the Lord Jesus.

  370. It's good

  371. if you spend time

  372. praising Him.

  373. It's good

  374. that you want to give

  375. offerings that cost you

  376. something to Him.

  377. But bottom line,

  378. Jesus is saying,

  379. if you love me,

  380. you'll make it a habit

  381. of obeying me.

  382. you'll make it a habit

  383. of knowing

  384. how I expect you

  385. to live

  386. which is revealed

  387. in His word.

  388. And it'll be your desire

  389. to do God's will,

  390. to put into practice

  391. the things that He teaches us

  392. in His word

  393. that please Him,

  394. that serve His purpose.

  395. God's gift of wisdom

  396. is given to those

  397. who truly love God.

  398. That was true

  399. about Solomon.

  400. It's true about anyone

  401. who's going to experience

  402. God's wisdom.

  403. But we also see

  404. from Solomon's

  405. example that

  406. God's wisdom

  407. is a gift

  408. given to those

  409. who humbly seek it.

  410. Verses 7 through 9,

  411. we see that again.

  412. God responded

  413. to Solomon's expression

  414. of love

  415. and worship

  416. by inviting him.

  417. God invited him

  418. to ask for anything.

  419. Look again in verse 5.

  420. Ask what I shall give you.

  421. Now Solomon responded

  422. with one of the most

  423. well-known expressions

  424. in the Bible

  425. in verse 9.

  426. Look at it.

  427. Give your servant,

  428. therefore,

  429. an understanding mind

  430. to govern your people

  431. that I may discern

  432. between good and evil.

  433. For who is able

  434. to govern this,

  435. your great people?

  436. Solomon, when asked,

  437. you can have

  438. whatever you want.

  439. He responds here,

  440. I want an understanding mind.

  441. Other translations say

  442. an understanding heart

  443. or a discerning heart.

  444. What's happening here

  445. in 1 Kings 3

  446. is summarized

  447. in 2 Chronicles.

  448. In chapter 1,

  449. verse 10,

  450. this statement

  451. or Solomon's response

  452. is summarized like this.

  453. Give me now

  454. wisdom

  455. and knowledge.

  456. That's what Solomon wanted.

  457. Now understand,

  458. God didn't place

  459. any conditions

  460. on Solomon's request.

  461. God didn't tell Solomon,

  462. I want you to be

  463. a good little Jewish boy.

  464. I want you to act

  465. like a king

  466. and think like a king

  467. as you respond.

  468. I want you to be spiritual

  469. with your response.

  470. It was an open-ended request.

  471. Solomon could ask

  472. for anything.

  473. Now of course,

  474. we know

  475. God would not have

  476. answered his prayer

  477. for just anything.

  478. God never acts

  479. contrary to his

  480. holy character.

  481. God's always

  482. going to be faithful

  483. to be who he is.

  484. He's never going to

  485. violate the truth

  486. of his word.

  487. He's never going

  488. to do anything

  489. that's contrary

  490. to who he is,

  491. our holy God.

  492. God's offer

  493. to Solomon

  494. was genuine.

  495. But it was also

  496. a test

  497. of Solomon's character.

  498. Now note that Solomon

  499. didn't just ask God

  500. for wisdom.

  501. He humbly

  502. acknowledged

  503. his own limitations.

  504. Look at verse 7.

  505. And now, O Lord,

  506. my God,

  507. you have made

  508. your servant

  509. king

  510. in place of my father.

  511. Although I am

  512. but a little child,

  513. I do not know

  514. how to go out

  515. or come in.

  516. Now Solomon's

  517. not being literal

  518. here.

  519. He's not a little

  520. child.

  521. We don't know

  522. exactly how old

  523. he was but probably

  524. around 20.

  525. He's a young man.

  526. Solomon is saying

  527. by making this

  528. kind of statement,

  529. he's just letting

  530. God know,

  531. I know that I'm

  532. inexperienced.

  533. I know that I

  534. do not know

  535. how to be king

  536. over these people.

  537. Solomon's saying,

  538. Lord, you have

  539. entrusted me

  540. an awesome

  541. responsibility

  542. and I'm just

  543. not equipped

  544. to do it.

  545. I need for you

  546. to provide me

  547. with the wisdom

  548. to enable me

  549. to be a good

  550. and wise

  551. and faithful king

  552. to these people.

  553. I need for you

  554. to provide me

  555. with the wisdom

  556. so that I'll be able

  557. to discern

  558. between good

  559. and evil

  560. and provide

  561. and provide

  562. good government

  563. for your

  564. chosen people.

  565. Solomon was praying.

  566. Solomon was going

  567. to God

  568. with genuine

  569. humility.

  570. He knew

  571. how limited

  572. he was

  573. but he had confidence

  574. that God

  575. could meet

  576. his needs.

  577. That's why he asked

  578. God to supply him

  579. with what he needed

  580. and he would

  581. do this job.

  582. We can learn

  583. a lot from Solomon's

  584. example,

  585. can't we?

  586. We can learn

  587. to admit

  588. our limitations

  589. and seek

  590. God's

  591. wisdom.

  592. You know,

  593. we have been

  594. given an awesome

  595. responsibility

  596. to live in this

  597. world,

  598. the world today

  599. as God's people

  600. and as Jesus said,

  601. we have a responsibility

  602. to be salt

  603. and light

  604. in the world today.

  605. I mean,

  606. you and me

  607. living in today's

  608. world,

  609. we have a responsibility

  610. to have a preserving

  611. effect.

  612. We have a responsibility

  613. to add flavor.

  614. We have a responsibility

  615. to shine

  616. the light

  617. of truth,

  618. God's truth

  619. in this

  620. spiritually

  621. dark

  622. world.

  623. How do you

  624. do that?

  625. Husbands,

  626. how do you love

  627. your wife

  628. as Christ loved

  629. the church?

  630. That's what,

  631. as Christian men,

  632. we're commanded

  633. to do.

  634. We need to ask

  635. God to give us

  636. the wisdom

  637. to know what

  638. that looks like

  639. as we live together

  640. every day.

  641. Wives,

  642. you are told,

  643. this is in Ephesians

  644. 5 and Colossians

  645. 3,

  646. both of these

  647. statements.

  648. You've been told

  649. to submit to your

  650. husband as unto

  651. the Lord.

  652. What does that

  653. look like

  654. in 2017?

  655. Do you ever

  656. ask God for the

  657. wisdom to help

  658. you to be that

  659. kind of godly

  660. wife?

  661. And you know,

  662. as parents,

  663. Scripture's very

  664. clear that it's

  665. our responsibility

  666. to be the primary

  667. spiritual teachers

  668. of our children?

  669. We need help,

  670. don't we?

  671. We need help to

  672. know how to

  673. train them

  674. according to the

  675. way that they

  676. should go.

  677. There is no

  678. cookie-cutter

  679. approach to

  680. training children,

  681. is there?

  682. They're all

  683. different.

  684. And we need

  685. God to help us

  686. to do it in a way

  687. that's appropriate

  688. for each child

  689. and it's true

  690. to His Word.

  691. And to do it in a way

  692. that we don't

  693. provoke our

  694. children to anger,

  695. one of the

  696. passages says.

  697. And that's

  698. sometimes hard to

  699. do, isn't it?

  700. To be the right

  701. kind of leader

  702. in the home

  703. as a parent,

  704. the right kind

  705. of attitude,

  706. be the right

  707. kind of example.

  708. And you know,

  709. a lot of you

  710. work in a place

  711. where you're

  712. expected

  713. to keep

  714. your,

  715. what we'll call

  716. religious views

  717. to yourself.

  718. I mean,

  719. in this day,

  720. it is very,

  721. very difficult

  722. in some settings

  723. for us to

  724. actually talk

  725. about what

  726. the Bible

  727. teaches

  728. concerning

  729. morality.

  730. There's some

  731. settings where

  732. we really need

  733. God's wisdom

  734. to know

  735. what to say

  736. and the way

  737. to say it.

  738. And there's

  739. just a lot of

  740. settings where

  741. we just need

  742. God's wisdom

  743. to know

  744. if we should

  745. say anything

  746. at all.

  747. See,

  748. we've got a,

  749. there's a fine

  750. line we've got

  751. to balance today.

  752. We cannot

  753. be afraid

  754. of people.

  755. We cannot

  756. deny the truth

  757. of God.

  758. We cannot

  759. compromise

  760. who we are

  761. as God's

  762. people.

  763. We can't

  764. compromise

  765. His Word.

  766. But at the

  767. same time,

  768. we've got to

  769. be there

  770. and be salt

  771. and light

  772. and have as

  773. good an influence

  774. as we can.

  775. And a lot of

  776. times that means

  777. we don't say

  778. everything that

  779. we think.

  780. it means

  781. that we say

  782. things

  783. precisely,

  784. lovingly,

  785. trying to

  786. convince,

  787. not beat

  788. somebody over

  789. the head

  790. with it.

  791. We need

  792. God's wisdom

  793. to know

  794. how to live

  795. in this world

  796. today.

  797. And if we

  798. want it,

  799. we need to

  800. just ask Him

  801. for it.

  802. We need to

  803. admit to God

  804. our inability,

  805. our limitations,

  806. our weaknesses,

  807. and ask God

  808. to give it to us

  809. because He promises

  810. in James chapter

    James 1 chapter mention

  811. 1 that He will

  812. look at it.

  813. James says,

  814. if any of you

  815. lacks wisdom,

  816. let him ask God

  817. who gives

  818. generously to all

  819. without reproach

  820. and it will be

  821. given to him.

  822. James says that

  823. in the context

  824. of talking about

  825. how to deal

  826. with hardships

  827. in life,

  828. how to live

  829. with difficulties,

  830. how to live

  831. with trials,

  832. just like what

  833. we're talking

  834. about.

  835. God will give

  836. us the wisdom

  837. to live in this

  838. world in the

  839. midst of hard

  840. situations.

  841. We've got to

  842. learn to ask Him.

  843. But also,

  844. we need to ask

  845. God the right

  846. way.

  847. James goes on

  848. in this letter,

  849. if you go ahead

  850. and read,

  851. say,

  852. chapter 4,

  853. to point out

  854. that God

  855. requires that

  856. when we ask

  857. for wisdom

  858. or we ask

  859. for anything,

  860. we ask for

  861. the right

  862. motives.

  863. We ask

  864. for the right

  865. purposes.

  866. James

  867. refers

  868. what we

  869. see in

  870. 1 Kings.

  871. There are

  872. prerequisites

  873. for receiving

  874. God's gift

  875. of wisdom.

  876. Let's look

  877. at one more

  878. real quickly

  879. in verse 9.

  880. God's wisdom

  881. is a gift

  882. given to

  883. those who

  884. want to

  885. use it

  886. to benefit

  887. others.

  888. Note what

  889. he says

  890. in verse 9.

  891. Give your

  892. servant,

  893. therefore,

  894. an understanding

  895. mind to

  896. govern your

  897. people,

  898. that I may

  899. discern between

  900. good and

  901. evil.

  902. For who

  903. is able

  904. to govern

  905. this,

  906. your great

  907. people?

  908. Solomon

  909. asked for

  910. wisdom so

  911. that he

  912. could be

  913. a benefit,

  914. a blessing

  915. to God's

  916. people.

  917. He wanted

  918. to be a

  919. wise and

  920. godly leader

  921. for the

  922. good of

  923. his country,

  924. for the

  925. good of

  926. God's

  927. people,

  928. for the

  929. good of

  930. families

  931. that he

  932. was responsible

  933. for,

  934. for the

  935. good of

  936. individuals.

  937. Solomon

  938. did not

  939. ask for

  940. wisdom so

  941. that he

  942. could become

  943. a famous

  944. wise man.

  945. I want

  946. you to

  947. understand

  948. that.

  949. What's

  950. happening in

  951. 1 Kings 3

  952. has nothing

  953. to do with

  954. Solomon seeking

  955. anything for

  956. himself.

  957. It's all

  958. about the

  959. glory of

  960. God and

  961. the good

  962. of others.

  963. God's.

  964. What are

  965. your prayers

  966. focused on?

  967. The glory

  968. of God and

  969. the good of

  970. others like

  971. Solomon.

  972. Now this

  973. does not mean

  974. we can't pray

  975. for ourselves.

  976. Solomon in

  977. doing all of

  978. this, he was

  979. praying for

  980. himself but

  981. he was not

  982. being selfish.

  983. He wasn't

  984. being greedy.

  985. He wasn't

  986. being worldly

  987. with his

  988. request.

  989. He was

  990. asking God

  991. to make

  992. him a

  993. wise leader

  994. so that

  995. God would

  996. be honored.

  997. So that

  998. God's people

  999. would be

  1000. taken care

  1001. of for

  1002. the good

  1003. of other

  1004. people.

  1005. That's what he

  1006. was praying

  1007. for.

  1008. We need to

  1009. learn to pray

  1010. like Solomon.

  1011. Openly admit

  1012. our limitations

  1013. and our needs

  1014. needs and

  1015. then ask

  1016. God to

  1017. meet those

  1018. needs in

  1019. a way that

  1020. will please

  1021. him and

  1022. be of benefit

  1023. to the people

  1024. around us

  1025. that God

  1026. has put in

  1027. our lives.

  1028. You know

  1029. after giving

  1030. Solomon this

  1031. wisdom, God

  1032. proceeded to

  1033. give him

  1034. even more

  1035. than he

  1036. asked for

  1037. or could

  1038. have imagined.

  1039. Look at

  1040. verses 13

  1041. and 14.

  1042. He says,

  1043. I give you

  1044. also what

  1045. you have

  1046. not asked,

  1047. both riches

  1048. and honor,

  1049. so that no

  1050. other king

  1051. shall compare

  1052. with you

  1053. all your

  1054. days.

  1055. And if you

  1056. will walk

  1057. in my ways,

  1058. keeping my

  1059. statutes

  1060. and my

  1061. commandments

  1062. as your

  1063. father David

  1064. walked,

  1065. then I

  1066. will lengthen

  1067. your days.

  1068. God just

  1069. blessed him.

  1070. Solomon

  1071. serves here

  1072. as an

  1073. example

  1074. of an

  1075. important

  1076. principle

  1077. that Jesus

  1078. stressed in

  1079. the Sermon

  1080. on the

  1081. Mount in

  1082. Matthew 6.

  1083. Look at

  1084. it.

  1085. Jesus said,

  1086. seek first

  1087. the kingdom

  1088. of God

  1089. and his

  1090. righteousness

  1091. and all

  1092. these things

  1093. will be

  1094. added to

  1095. you.

  1096. That's what

  1097. Solomon did.

  1098. Now as I

  1099. said at the

  1100. beginning of

  1101. this message,

  1102. Solomon is

  1103. unique.

  1104. Solomon is

  1105. totally

  1106. different than

  1107. you and

  1108. me.

  1109. We should

  1110. not expect

  1111. God to

  1112. make us

  1113. the wisest

  1114. and wealthiest

  1115. person in

  1116. Pickens

  1117. County.

  1118. That is

  1119. never a

  1120. request,

  1121. a proper

  1122. request.

  1123. It was just

  1124. a byproduct

  1125. in Solomon's

  1126. life of

  1127. God's grace.

  1128. God's grace.

  1129. But here's

  1130. what you need

  1131. to think.

  1132. God is

  1133. able to

  1134. surprise us

  1135. with his

  1136. generosity.

  1137. Even us

  1138. writing much,

  1139. much later

  1140. to the

  1141. church in

  1142. Ephesus.

  1143. Paul said

  1144. this.

  1145. It's in

  1146. Ephesians

    Ephesians 3:20

  1147. chapter 3

  1148. verse 20.

  1149. It's really

  1150. an expression

  1151. of praise

  1152. worshiping

  1153. God.

  1154. A doxology.

  1155. He says,

  1156. now to

  1157. him who

  1158. is able

  1159. to do

  1160. far more

  1161. abundantly

  1162. than all

  1163. we ask

  1164. or think,

  1165. some translations

  1166. say,

  1167. or imagine,

  1168. according to

  1169. the power

  1170. at work

  1171. within us.

  1172. Paul,

  1173. as he

  1174. thought about

  1175. God,

  1176. as he

  1177. prayed,

  1178. he thought

  1179. about God

  1180. as being

  1181. able to do

  1182. far more

  1183. abundantly

  1184. than all

  1185. we ask

  1186. or imagine.

  1187. you know,

  1188. the best

  1189. way for us

  1190. to follow

  1191. Solomon's

  1192. example

  1193. is to

  1194. seek the

  1195. wisdom of

  1196. God in

  1197. its highest

  1198. form,

  1199. which is

  1200. the person

  1201. of Jesus

  1202. Christ.

  1203. As wise

  1204. as Solomon

  1205. was,

  1206. the Lord

  1207. Jesus Christ

  1208. is far

  1209. wiser,

  1210. for he is

  1211. the Son

  1212. of God.

  1213. The wisest

  1214. thing that

  1215. any person

  1216. can ever

  1217. do is to

  1218. give their

  1219. life,

  1220. to Jesus

  1221. Christ,

  1222. in total

  1223. surrender,

  1224. trusting him

  1225. as Savior

  1226. and Lord.

  1227. Have you

  1228. done that?

  1229. If you

  1230. haven't,

  1231. would you

  1232. like to?

  1233. You can,

  1234. if you will

  1235. do like

  1236. Solomon there

  1237. and admit

  1238. your need,

  1239. admit your

  1240. sin,

  1241. turn from

  1242. that,

  1243. change your

  1244. mind about

  1245. living that

  1246. way.

  1247. Put your

  1248. faith in

  1249. Jesus,

  1250. that as

  1251. God's

  1252. Son,

  1253. he came

  1254. into this

  1255. world,

  1256. lived a

  1257. perfect

  1258. life,

  1259. obeyed God

  1260. with no

  1261. flaws.

  1262. Then he

  1263. died on the

  1264. cross,

  1265. according to

  1266. God's purpose

  1267. from the

  1268. foundation of

  1269. the world,

  1270. he died on

  1271. the cross to

  1272. pay the

  1273. penalty for

  1274. your sins

  1275. if you'll

  1276. trust him.

  1277. Think about

  1278. him dying as

  1279. your substitute,

  1280. taking your

  1281. sin upon

  1282. himself,

  1283. experiencing the

  1284. punishment you

  1285. should have

  1286. experienced.

  1287. If you'll

  1288. trust him

  1289. and what he

  1290. did that

  1291. way and

  1292. call upon

  1293. him to

  1294. save you,

  1295. he will.

  1296. God will

  1297. forgive you

  1298. because the

  1299. penalty for

  1300. your sins

  1301. has been

  1302. paid in

  1303. Jesus.

  1304. God will

  1305. see you as

  1306. completely

  1307. right with

  1308. him because

  1309. of the

  1310. righteousness

  1311. of Jesus.

  1312. If you

  1313. don't know

  1314. him as

  1315. your Lord

  1316. and Savior,

  1317. I encourage

  1318. you,

  1319. right now,

  1320. the wisest

  1321. thing that

  1322. you could

  1323. do would

  1324. be to

  1325. call upon

  1326. Jesus for

  1327. your salvation.

  1328. But I

  1329. know that

  1330. Jesus Christ

  1331. is the

  1332. Lord and

  1333. Savior of

  1334. most people

  1335. in this

  1336. room,

  1337. but what I

  1338. want to ask

  1339. you is,

  1340. are you

  1341. looking to

  1342. him seriously

  1343. day by

  1344. day and

  1345. asking him

  1346. to give you

  1347. the wisdom

  1348. that you

  1349. need for

  1350. the day,

  1351. for the

  1352. family,

  1353. for the

  1354. workplace,

  1355. for school?

  1356. Are you

  1357. looking to

  1358. him to give

  1359. you the

  1360. wisdom you

  1361. need to

  1362. live like

  1363. a child

  1364. of God

  1365. in a

  1366. hard world

  1367. and really

  1368. be salt

  1369. and light?

  1370. If you're

  1371. not asking

  1372. him,

  1373. why not?

  1374. And what

  1375. would you

  1376. need to

  1377. change in

  1378. order to

  1379. start asking

  1380. him?

  1381. You know,

  1382. if there's

  1383. sin in your

  1384. life,

  1385. if there's

  1386. something in

  1387. your life

  1388. that you're

  1389. just bowing

  1390. up,

  1391. rebelling

  1392. against God

  1393. about before

  1394. anything ever

  1395. changes,

  1396. you've got to

  1397. confess that,

  1398. you've got to

  1399. repent of

  1400. that.

  1401. If there's

  1402. some priorities

  1403. in your

  1404. life that

  1405. you know

  1406. are not

  1407. right,

  1408. you've got to

  1409. admit that to

  1410. God and ask

  1411. him to help

  1412. you to

  1413. rearrange those

  1414. priorities.

  1415. But I want

  1416. to encourage

  1417. you now,

  1418. respond to

  1419. God in

  1420. loving

  1421. obedience as

  1422. he shows

  1423. you how he

  1424. wants you to

  1425. respond to

  1426. this message

  1427. about developing

  1428. the kind of

  1429. wisdom that

  1430. Solomon did.

  1431. Would you

  1432. pray with me?

  1433. Dear God,

  1434. help us to

  1435. see in

  1436. Solomon,

  1437. not someone

  1438. that we're

  1439. ever going

  1440. to be,

  1441. but help us

  1442. to see in

  1443. him,

  1444. Father,

  1445. someone who

  1446. had the

  1447. kind of

  1448. character,

  1449. the kind

  1450. of heart

  1451. that enabled

  1452. him to see

  1453. his need for

  1454. wisdom and

  1455. ask for it

  1456. so that he

  1457. could use it

  1458. in a way that

  1459. would please

  1460. you and help

  1461. people.

  1462. Help us to

  1463. see, dear God,

  1464. that we need

  1465. to be people

  1466. who love you

  1467. with all of

  1468. our heart,

  1469. soul,

  1470. mind,

  1471. and strength.

  1472. Help us to

  1473. see that

  1474. wisdom,

  1475. like what

  1476. we're talking

  1477. about,

  1478. this gift

  1479. from you

  1480. is something

  1481. that you

  1482. give to

  1483. your children.

  1484. It's a

  1485. loving gift.

  1486. Help us,

  1487. Father,

  1488. to desire it,

  1489. to ask for

  1490. it.

  1491. Help us,

  1492. Father,

  1493. to desire it

  1494. and ask for

  1495. it because we

  1496. want to please

  1497. you in how

  1498. we use it,

  1499. and we want

  1500. to be a

  1501. value.

  1502. We want to

  1503. be a

  1504. blessing to

  1505. people by

  1506. the way that

  1507. we use it.

  1508. In attitude of

  1509. prayer,

  1510. you just listen

  1511. to the Lord

  1512. and respond to

  1513. Him.

  1514. If I could pray

  1515. for you during

  1516. this time,

  1517. I'll be here at

  1518. the front and

  1519. be happy to do

  1520. that.

  1521. Let's just be

  1522. still and quiet

  1523. before the Lord

  1524. and then respond

  1525. to Him.
