  1. Do you like stories with happy endings?

  2. Most people do.

  3. In fact, I don't really know anybody who would say,

  4. I love to read a story that just rips my heart out at the end.

  5. I can't imagine that.

  6. Well, have you ever noticed that most of the Bible stories

  7. that you were taught growing up or that you just have read yourself,

  8. have you ever noticed that most Bible stories have a happy ending?

  9. Think about some that you know well, like the story of Joseph.

  10. Joseph started off, he was sold into slavery.

  11. He was abused in various ways,

  12. but God raised him up to a position of prominence and power in Egypt.

  13. His story had a great ending.

  14. You know the story of Daniel,

  15. how he was thrown into a den of lions,

  16. but God rescued him, closed the mouths of those lions,

  17. brought him not only out of the lion's den,

  18. but put him back in a place of power,

  19. of great influence in a foreign pagan nation.

  20. The greatest story is the story of Jesus,

  21. how he died on a cross and was buried,

  22. but God brought him back from the grave.

  23. He not only was resurrected,

  24. but he has ascended back into heaven where he is today

  25. and one day will return to this world.

  26. And if you know him as your Lord and Savior,

  27. or you'll come to put your faith in him,

  28. your life story can have a great ending.

  29. No matter what happens in this world,

  30. you will live for eternity in heaven with the Lord Jesus Christ.

  31. That'd be the greatest ending, wouldn't it?

  32. But I'm going to guess most people in this room,

  33. you know that not all stories, even in the Bible,

  34. have a happy ending.

  35. One of the saddest stories that you'll ever read in the Bible

  36. is the story of Solomon.

  37. Now last week we saw how God blessed him with such wisdom

  38. that the Bible even calls him the wisest man who ever lived.

  39. Now you would think that the wisest man who ever lived,

  40. according to Scripture,

  41. that his life would be a great life.

  42. That his life would just be a life of faithfulness.

  43. It'd just be a good life that would end well.

  44. But it didn't.

  45. Solomon's life does not have a happy ending

  46. because he, even though he was a man of wisdom,

  47. he made a lot of unwise choices throughout his life.

  48. Chuck Swindoll describes how Solomon's failure

  49. to consistently act wisely led to its tragic ending.

  50. Look at it.

  51. By the end of Solomon's life,

  52. the royal tree that once stood so straight and tall

  53. had rotted from within.

  54. In the springtime of his life, he had written,

  55. Solomon wrote that, Proverbs 1.7.

  56. But by the autumn of his life,

  57. he had ceased fearing God

  58. and simply depended on his own human wisdom.

  59. He was no longer the world's wisest man.

  60. He had become the world's wisest fool.

  61. Last week, we looked at the bright side of Solomon's life.

  62. Well, today we're going to look at the dark side.

  63. It's in 1 Kings chapter 11.

    1 Kings 11 chapter mention

  64. Turn with me if you would.

  65. 1 Kings chapter 11.

    1 Kings 11 chapter mention

  66. As we go through this message,

  67. as we go through this passage,

  68. our goal is to learn some good lessons

  69. from Solomon's bad example.

  70. Our goal is that we learn from him

  71. and not follow in his footsteps

  72. because we don't want to become wise fools

  73. with a tragic ending to our life.

  74. So let's read 1 Kings chapter 11.

    1 Kings 11 chapter mention

  75. Now Solomon loved many foreign women

  76. along with the daughter of Pharaoh,

  77. Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women

  78. from the nations concerning which

  79. the Lord had said to the people of Israel,

  80. You shall not enter into marriage with them,

  81. neither shall they with you,

  82. for surely they will turn away your heart

  83. after their gods.

  84. Solomon clung to these in love.

  85. He had 700 wives who were princesses

  86. and 300 concubines,

  87. and his wives turned away his heart.

  88. For when Solomon was old,

  89. his wives turned away his heart

  90. after other gods,

  91. and his heart was not wholly true

  92. to the Lord his God,

  93. as was the heart of David his father.

  94. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth,

  95. the goddess of the Sidonians,

  96. and after Milcom,

  97. the abomination of the Amorites.

  98. So Solomon did what was evil

  99. in the sight of the Lord

  100. and did not wholly follow the Lord

  101. as David his father had done.

  102. Then Solomon built a high place

  103. for Chemosh,

  104. the abomination of Moab,

  105. and for Molech,

  106. the abomination of the Amorites

  107. on the mountain east of Jerusalem.

  108. And so he did for all his foreign wives

  109. who made offerings and sacrifices

  110. to their gods.

  111. And the Lord was angry with Solomon

  112. because his heart had turned away from the Lord,

  113. the God of Israel,

  114. who had appeared to him twice

  115. and had commanded him concerning this thing

  116. that he should not go after other gods.

  117. But he did not keep what the Lord commanded.

  118. Therefore the Lord said to Solomon,

  119. Since this has been your practice

  120. and you have not kept my covenant

  121. and my statutes that I have commanded you,

  122. I will surely tear the kingdom from you

  123. and will give it to your servant.

  124. Yet for the sake of David your father,

  125. I will not do it in your days,

  126. but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.

  127. However, I will not tear away all the kingdom,

  128. but I will give one tribe to your son

  129. for the sake of David my servant

  130. and for the sake of Jerusalem that I have chosen.

  131. Solomon, the wisest man on earth

  132. because God had graciously chosen

  133. to bless him with that wisdom.

  134. He didn't use it wisely.

  135. He made foolish choices.

  136. And the result was,

  137. God was angry

  138. and God told him,

  139. I'm not going to take the kingdom from you right now,

  140. not because of you,

  141. but because of your father David

  142. and my covenant with him.

  143. But I'm going to take this kingdom from your son.

  144. And every parent in here knows

  145. that would have ripped the heart out of Solomon

  146. to think all that he had,

  147. all that he had amassed,

  148. that he knew one day would belong to his heirs,

  149. God was going to take it away.

  150. His son would suffer.

  151. And Solomon, if you go ahead and read on,

  152. Solomon suffers all,

  153. also because God raises up adversaries

  154. who are going to create problems for Solomon

  155. from here on out.

  156. Solomon shows us the way

  157. someone becomes a wise fool.

  158. Let's see what we can see

  159. with prayer to help us avoid

  160. following those footsteps.

  161. Number one,

  162. a wise fool compromises biblical truth

  163. when it seems personally beneficial.

  164. Solomon compromised

  165. what he knew,

  166. the scripture says,

  167. because he thought he was an exception.

  168. He thought it would help him

  169. maybe be a better king,

  170. enhance his reputation,

  171. and in the back of his mind,

  172. he probably thought,

  173. as the king of God's people,

  174. if my image is made greater,

  175. burns brighter,

  176. maybe that'll make God's burn brighter as well.

  177. He was a compromiser,

  178. and so he had probably

  179. all kinds of rationalizations in his mind.

  180. Let's look at some of the ways he compromised.

  181. Number one,

  182. he compromised in the way he sought power.

  183. He sought to make his kingdom secure

  184. by developing alliances

  185. with foreign kings

  186. through marriages

  187. to their daughter.

  188. Look at verse 3

  189. that we've just read.

  190. Look at the description

  191. of his many wives.

  192. It says,

  193. He had 700 wives

  194. who were princesses.

  195. Now that word,

  196. princesses,

  197. means that many of his wives

  198. were daughters of foreign kings.

  199. Those marriages

  200. were politically motivated.

  201. He didn't have a real relationship

  202. with 700 wives

  203. and 300 concubines.

  204. That was a part of his image.

  205. That was a part

  206. of what kings did in that day

  207. to make them look

  208. greater and mightier

  209. before people.

  210. But also in this case,

  211. this was Solomon's way

  212. of aligning himself

  213. with other kings

  214. and kingdoms

  215. to avoid future conflict.

  216. He did not have to do it

  217. at this time

  218. because there were no problems.

  219. David had taken care

  220. of everything.

  221. Basically,

  222. the kingdom that Solomon inherited

  223. was at peace.

  224. He did not need to do this,

  225. but he chose to do it.

  226. He was politically motivated.

  227. You can understand maybe

  228. he wanted to make sure

  229. that his people,

  230. his nation,

  231. would be secure.

  232. So I'm going to make

  233. what might be an enemy

  234. become my ally

  235. through these marriages.

  236. Now,

  237. what we were reading about

  238. in chapter 11

  239. took place at the end

  240. of Solomon's life

  241. or near the end.

  242. But Solomon didn't do this

  243. just toward the end

  244. of his life.

  245. He started his reign

  246. as king

  247. making the same compromise

  248. as we saw last week

  249. in chapter 3.

  250. In chapter 3

  251. of this 1 Kings

  252. that we're looking at,

  253. verse 1,

  254. it says this,

  255. Solomon made a marriage alliance

  256. with Pharaoh,

  257. king of Egypt.

  258. He took Pharaoh's daughter

  259. and brought her

  260. into the city of David.

  261. Solomon

  262. thought he was being,

  263. what you might say,

  264. politically savvy.

  265. Now,

  266. he was not trying

  267. to be defiant.

  268. He was not trying to,

  269. he was not openly

  270. rebelling against God.

  271. Especially here

  272. in chapter 3,

  273. he didn't really see it

  274. as a compromise.

  275. Chapter 3,

  276. verse 3 says,

  277. he loved the Lord

  278. and we looked at that

  279. last week.

  280. Solomon probably thought

  281. in his mind,

  282. this is just what kings do.

  283. this will enhance

  284. our nation's security.

  285. This will prevent

  286. problems from happening.

  287. It will make peace

  288. between neighboring countries.

  289. That may have been

  290. a very wise thing

  291. for a secular king,

  292. but it was not

  293. for God's king.

  294. God warned his people.

  295. God warned the people

  296. of Israel

  297. from the beginning,

  298. before they ever went

  299. to the promised land,

  300. before this ever

  301. could happen.

  302. He warned his people

  303. that they were not

  304. to do things like this.

  305. What is said

  306. in the last part

  307. of verse 2

  308. here in chapter 11

  309. that we saw,

  310. that came from

  311. Deuteronomy chapter 7.

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  312. I want you to look at it

  313. from Deuteronomy 7

  314. on the screen.

  315. God said to

  316. the people of Israel,

  317. you shall make

  318. no covenant

  319. with them

  320. and show no mercy

  321. to them.

  322. That's those foreigners

  323. who occupied

  324. the promised land

  325. prior to God

  326. sending his people

  327. in there

  328. to take it.

  329. You shall make

  330. no covenant

  331. with them

  332. and show no mercy

  333. to them.

  334. You shall not

  335. intermarry with them,

  336. giving your daughters

  337. to their sons

  338. or taking their daughters

  339. for your sons,

  340. for they would

  341. turn away

  342. your sons

  343. from following me

  344. to serve other gods.

  345. Then the anger

  346. of the Lord

  347. would be kindled

  348. against you

  349. and he would

  350. destroy you

  351. quickly.

  352. Now I want you

  353. to just stop

  354. and think.

  355. The very thing

  356. that happened

  357. to Solomon,

  358. God said

  359. before there was

  360. ever even

  361. a nation of Israel,

  362. don't do things

  363. like that.

  364. Don't

  365. intermarry

  366. because if you do,

  367. these pagan,

  368. false God

  369. worshiping people,

  370. they'll lead you

  371. astray.

  372. They'll take you

  373. away from me

  374. and that'll result

  375. in my anger

  376. and your judgment.

  377. God

  378. mercifully

  379. warned them.

  380. Solomon,

  381. the wisest man

  382. who ever lived,

  383. didn't listen.

  384. He compromised

  385. the truth of God

  386. in order to

  387. maybe seek

  388. or maintain

  389. political power,

  390. national security.

  391. That's not all he did.

  392. That's not the only compromise.

  393. He compromised

  394. in some of the ways

  395. he spent his wealth.

  396. Solomon

  397. in some ways

  398. flaunted

  399. that great wealth

  400. that God gave him.

  401. One was in the way

  402. he accumulated

  403. many horses

  404. and chariots

  405. from Egypt.

  406. I want you to just

  407. look at it real quickly,

  408. just a couple of verses.

  409. In 2 Chronicles chapter 9,

    2 Chronicles 9 chapter mention

  410. that's sort of a parallel

  411. story.

  412. And horses

  413. were imported

  414. for Solomon

  415. from Egypt

  416. and from all the lands.

  417. Here in 1 Kings,

  418. just back up

  419. from where we are

  420. in chapter 11,

  421. chapter 10,

  422. verses 26 and 28.

  423. And Solomon

  424. gathered together

  425. chariots

  426. and horsemen.

  427. He had 1,400

  428. chariots

  429. and 12,000

  430. horsemen.

  431. And Solomon

  432. imported horses

  433. from Egypt

  434. and Q.

  435. And you might think,

  436. what's the big deal?

  437. Don't kings acquire

  438. all kinds of things

  439. like that?

  440. Yes.

  441. But Israel's kings

  442. were specifically

  443. instructed

  444. not to

  445. amass

  446. an army of chariots

  447. and horsemen.

  448. Look at it

  449. from Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  450. chapter 17.

  451. Basically,

  452. instructions

  453. to Israel's

  454. former

  455. or future

  456. kings.

  457. When you come

  458. to the land

  459. that the Lord

  460. your God

  461. is giving you

  462. and you possess it

  463. and dwell in it

  464. and then say,

  465. I will set a king

  466. over me

  467. like all the nations

  468. that are around me,

  469. you may indeed

  470. set a king

  471. over you

  472. whom the Lord

  473. your God

  474. will choose.

  475. Only he must

  476. not acquire

  477. many horses

  478. for himself

  479. or cause the people

  480. to return

  481. to Egypt

  482. in order to

  483. acquire many horses

  484. since the Lord

  485. has said to you,

  486. you shall never

  487. return that way

  488. again.

  489. Solomon,

  490. it appears,

  491. was more concerned

  492. with competing

  493. with other kings

  494. in accumulating

  495. a lot of horses

  496. and chariots,

  497. that kind of army,

  498. that kind of division

  499. in his army.

  500. He was more concerned

  501. with competing

  502. with the other kings,

  503. maybe outdoing

  504. the other kings

  505. than he was

  506. with obeying God.

  507. Solomon also

  508. put more emphasis

  509. on building

  510. his own house

  511. than he did

  512. the house of God.

  513. I want you to note

  514. one sentence

  515. that is said

  516. about Solomon

  517. building the temple,

  518. God's house.

  519. It's in 1 Kings 6, 39.

  520. It says,

  521. he was seven years

  522. in building.

  523. That's the temple.

  524. The very next verse

  525. is chapter 7, verse 1.

    Isaiah 7:1

  526. And just look

  527. at what it says.

  528. Solomon was building

  529. his own house

  530. 13 years

  531. and he finished

  532. his entire house.

  533. Now, most commentators,

  534. most Old Testament scholars

  535. who are trying to figure out

  536. what's going on here,

  537. interpret that

  538. as the writer

  539. of 1 Kings

  540. contrasting,

  541. pointing out

  542. the difference

  543. between the time

  544. and the money

  545. Solomon spent

  546. on the Lord's house

  547. versus the time

  548. and money

  549. he spent

  550. on his own house.

  551. And time-wise,

  552. Solomon spent

  553. almost twice

  554. as much time

  555. building his

  556. elaborate

  557. palace

  558. than he did

  559. building the temple

  560. of God.

  561. the ESV study Bible

  562. points this out.

  563. Look at it.

  564. Solomon spent

  565. much more time

  566. building his own house

  567. or palace

  568. complex

  569. than he did

  570. building God's house,

  571. another indication

  572. of his

  573. divided

  574. heart.

  575. From everything

  576. we see,

  577. it appeared

  578. there were times,

  579. not all the times,

  580. there were times

  581. when Solomon

  582. was not wise

  583. in the way

  584. he used his money.

  585. And there were times

  586. when he was just

  587. concerned to put

  588. on a show,

  589. flaunt

  590. what he had,

  591. make other kings

  592. envious,

  593. but he was

  594. compromising.

  595. He wasn't

  596. acting

  597. faithfully

  598. to the Word

  599. of God

  600. as he knew it.

  601. and he really

  602. just wasn't

  603. acting as a man

  604. that God

  605. had given

  606. such great

  607. wisdom to.

  608. But there's

  609. a third

  610. compromise

  611. we need to notice.

  612. He compromised

  613. in the way

  614. he fulfilled

  615. his sexual

  616. desires.

  617. Solomon

  618. had a great

  619. interest

  620. in women,

  621. in foreign

  622. women.

  623. He had a

  624. weakness

  625. for women.

  626. Look at verse

  627. one.

  628. Now Solomon

  629. loved many

  630. foreign

  631. women.

  632. Now as we've

  633. said,

  634. some of these

  635. marriages were

  636. politically

  637. motivated.

  638. Hey,

  639. but nobody

  640. twisted Solomon's

  641. arm to make

  642. him do this.

  643. Nobody put

  644. any pressure

  645. on him to

  646. take all

  647. these women.

  648. Solomon was

  649. king.

  650. Solomon could

  651. do what he

  652. wanted to do

  653. and not do

  654. anything he

  655. didn't want

  656. to do.

  657. Solomon loved

  658. women.

  659. He loved

  660. foreign women.

  661. And in the

  662. power,

  663. with the power

  664. he had,

  665. the position

  666. he was in,

  667. he took

  668. advantage of

  669. that.

  670. Whoever he

  671. wanted,

  672. that's who

  673. he got.

  674. And he

  675. did it

  676. excessively.

  677. Look at

  678. verse three.

  679. They captured

  680. his heart.

  681. He loved

  682. foreign women.

  683. He gave

  684. himself to

  685. many women.

  686. There was

  687. love,

  688. there was

  689. emotional

  690. attachment.

  691. And because

  692. he gave

  693. himself that

  694. way,

  695. they had

  696. influence over

  697. him.

  698. They

  699. influenced

  700. him in

  701. some terrible

  702. ways.

  703. Verse three,

  704. and his

  705. wives turned

  706. his heart,

  707. turned away

  708. his heart.

  709. As we have

  710. already seen,

  711. this was a

  712. clear violation

  713. of God's

  714. word.

  715. Deuteronomy

  716. seven,

  717. you shall not

  718. intermarry with

  719. them.

  720. Also in

  721. Deuteronomy

  722. 17,

  723. Israel's

  724. kings were

  725. not supposed

  726. to take

  727. all these

  728. wives.

  729. Look at

  730. it.

  731. And he

  732. shall,

  733. talking about

  734. Israel's

  735. kings,

  736. and he

  737. shall not

  738. acquire many

  739. wives for

  740. himself,

  741. lest his

  742. heart turn

  743. away.

  744. Solomon

  745. compromised

  746. the truth of

  747. God's word

  748. in his

  749. pursuit of

  750. women.

  751. He

  752. compromised

  753. the truth of

  754. God's word

  755. in the way

  756. he fulfilled

  757. his sexual

  758. desires.

  759. Now,

  760. let's look at

  761. it now.

  762. Solomon never

  763. renounced his

  764. faith.

  765. Solomon never

  766. says or does

  767. anything to

  768. say he's

  769. turning away

  770. from God.

  771. He doesn't

  772. believe God's

  773. word.

  774. He doesn't

  775. care what

  776. God thinks.

  777. But his

  778. love for

  779. God,

  780. and his

  781. trust in

  782. God is

  783. obviously,

  784. as you just

  785. read through

  786. this,

  787. it's not

  788. wholehearted.

  789. He did

  790. love God

  791. to a certain

  792. degree.

  793. He was

  794. committed to

  795. a certain

  796. degree.

  797. But there

  798. was not the

  799. wholehearted

  800. love and

  801. commitment that

  802. God required.

  803. How do you

  804. know that?

  805. Because all

  806. along the way

  807. he compromised

  808. and disobeyed

  809. God to

  810. increase his

  811. power,

  812. to flaunt

  813. his wealth,

  814. to fulfill

  815. his lusts.

  816. All too many

  817. times,

  818. Solomon was

  819. more committed

  820. to pleasing

  821. himself than

  822. he was to

  823. pleasing God.

  824. God.

  825. Now,

  826. do you see

  827. yourself in

  828. any of these

  829. pictures,

  830. in any of

  831. these compromising

  832. situations?

  833. You know,

  834. money,

  835. sex,

  836. and power are

  837. the big three

  838. sources of

  839. temptation in

  840. this world,

  841. aren't they?

  842. One or two

  843. of them,

  844. probably not all

  845. three,

  846. one or two of

  847. them really

  848. resonates with

  849. you,

  850. because we're

  851. just that way.

  852. You know,

  853. you know what's

  854. one of your,

  855. maybe what you

  856. might call root

  857. sins,

  858. one of the

  859. greatest temptations

  860. for you,

  861. but the person

  862. sitting right

  863. beside you in a

  864. pew,

  865. that may not be a

  866. temptation for them

  867. at all.

  868. What you struggle

  869. with,

  870. it's not even a

  871. thought for

  872. somebody else.

  873. But you think

  874. about it.

  875. We in this

  876. room,

  877. we all struggle

  878. with temptations.

  879. Are yours more

  880. along the lines

  881. of,

  882. you struggle

  883. with an area

  884. of money,

  885. of wealth,

  886. of material

  887. things.

  888. Maybe just

  889. your desire

  890. for it.

  891. Maybe some

  892. of the things

  893. you might

  894. compromise in

  895. order to get

  896. it,

  897. or to hold

  898. on to it.

  899. Or maybe

  900. do you

  901. compromise in

  902. the area

  903. of power,

  904. of control?

  905. Maybe you

  906. abuse your

  907. authority.

  908. Maybe you

  909. envy those

  910. who are

  911. in authority,

  912. who have

  913. power.

  914. Maybe you

  915. resent it.

  916. Or maybe

  917. your temptations

  918. in the sexual

  919. realm.

  920. maybe it's

  921. just thoughts.

  922. Maybe it's

  923. some of the

  924. ways you

  925. entertain

  926. yourself.

  927. Or it

  928. could be

  929. just a

  930. flat-out

  931. relationship

  932. that you

  933. know is

  934. not right.

  935. We struggle.

  936. We are

  937. tempted.

  938. We're not

  939. tempted all

  940. in the same

  941. ways.

  942. But most

  943. of us in

  944. this room,

  945. we struggle

  946. with one

  947. or more

  948. money,

  949. sex,

  950. power.

  951. What are

  952. you doing

  953. to guard

  954. against

  955. stumbling

  956. and falling

  957. over one

  958. or more

  959. of these

  960. temptations

  961. in your life?

  962. I mean,

  963. what are you

  964. doing?

  965. How are you

  966. fighting it?

  967. How are you

  968. resisting it?

  969. One of the

  970. most important

  971. ways to avoid

  972. compromising and

  973. falling, as

  974. Solomon did, is

  975. to learn to

  976. choose God's

  977. way of wisdom

  978. and obedience

  979. every day.

  980. You know, if you're

  981. familiar with the

  982. Old Testament, this

  983. story, or here

  984. last week, chapter

  985. three, verse

  986. three, God

  987. said, Solomon, I'll

  988. give you anything you

  989. want.

  990. You tell me.

  991. And Solomon made

  992. this choice.

  993. I want wisdom.

  994. A great choice.

  995. But it wasn't

  996. enough for

  997. Solomon to ask

  998. for wisdom

  999. one time

  1000. at the beginning

  1001. of his reign.

  1002. Solomon should

  1003. have been asking

  1004. for wisdom

  1005. every day

  1006. of his reign.

  1007. And he would

  1008. have avoided

  1009. these compromises

  1010. if he had

  1011. truly sought

  1012. day by day

  1013. to be faithful

  1014. to God,

  1015. to listen to

  1016. God, to obey

  1017. God,

  1018. in every

  1019. detail.

  1020. Here's what I

  1021. want us to

  1022. understand.

  1023. Choosing to

  1024. trust God and

  1025. be faithful to

  1026. him is not a

  1027. once-in-a-lifetime

  1028. choice that you

  1029. make.

  1030. You don't have

  1031. some kind of

  1032. emotional experience

  1033. or really just

  1034. think it through

  1035. and come to a

  1036. real serious

  1037. decision and

  1038. say, I am

  1039. going to put my

  1040. faith and trust

  1041. in God.

  1042. I am going to

  1043. really and truly

  1044. trust Jesus as my

  1045. Lord and Savior

  1046. and think to

  1047. yourself, it's a

  1048. done deal.

  1049. I never need to

  1050. think about it

  1051. again.

  1052. I make this

  1053. commitment and I

  1054. go on with my

  1055. life.

  1056. That's crazy.

  1057. That is not

  1058. biblical faith.

  1059. faith.

1060. We must make this a

  1061. daily, sometimes

  1062. even hourly

  1063. commitment if we

  1064. really want to be

  1065. faithful.

  1066. You don't make a

  1067. decision to trust

  1068. Christ one day,

  1069. never think about

  1070. it again.

  1071. Saving faith is

  1072. continuing faith or

  1073. it's nothing at all.

  1074. Everything you read

  1075. about faith in both

  1076. the Old and New

  1077. Testament.

  1078. Somebody begins a

  1079. relationship with the

  1080. Lord one day, putting

  1081. their faith and trust

  1082. in Him, but they

  1083. continue to trust Him,

  1084. to obey Him if

  1085. they're faithful.

  1086. That's what God

  1087. calls us to do.

  1088. That's why it's so

  1089. important for us to

  1090. spend time every day

  1091. with the Lord in

  1092. meaningful, heartfelt

  1093. prayer and Bible

  1094. reading.

1095. We need to seek to

  1096. cultivate a conscious

  1097. awareness of God's

  1098. presence in our life

  1099. on a regular basis.

  1100. Begin the day with

  1101. Him in the morning.

1102. Talk to Him as we go

  1103. through the day.

  1104. Become familiar enough

1105. with His Word that as

  1106. we encounter situations,

  1107. have to make decisions,

1108. we have a good idea of

1109. what God's will is and

1110. we ask His help to

1111. enable us to do His

  1112. will.

1113. The only way we can

  1114. avoid compromising like

1115. Solomon did is to live

  1116. in close fellowship with

  1117. God every day.

  1118. And I'm as serious as I

  1119. can be.

  1120. That applies to every

1121. single one of us in

  1122. this room.

  1123. Your level of

  1124. commitment could be

  1125. stated this morning if

  1126. someone observed you,

1127. knew what was in your

1128. mind, knew what was in

  1129. your heart, knew how

  1130. you spent your time.

1131. Every one of us, our

  1132. level of commitment to

  1133. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1134. our faithfulness could be

  1135. pretty much explained

1136. based on the amount of

1137. time we spend with Him,

  1138. talking to Him,

  1139. listening to Him,

  1140. loving Him, praising Him,

  1141. desiring Him, obeying Him.

  1142. that's true about me and I

1143. know it's true about you.

1144. Solomon got too busy with

  1145. his kingdom.

  1146. Solomon got too concerned

  1147. about himself.

1148. He got preoccupied by his

1149. wealth, by his power, by his

  1150. position.

  1151. Solomon got distracted by

  1152. women and sex.

  1153. And it destroyed

  1154. his kingdom.

  1155. It destroyed his life.

1156. The only way we can avoid

  1157. this divided heart,

  1158. Solomon's problem,

1159. is to have a guard over our

1160. hearts and not let it

  1161. become distracted and

  1162. divided like he did.

1163. Let's look at one more

  1164. point quickly.

  1165. A wise fool carelessly

1166. fails to guard his heart

1167. because he thinks he can

  1168. handle anything.

1169. I want you to look at

  1170. Solomon.

  1171. Chapter 11, verse 4 first.

1172. For when Solomon was old,

1173. his wives turned away his

  1174. heart after other gods,

1175. and his heart was not

1176. wholly true to the Lord

1177. his God, as was the heart

  1178. of David, his father.

  1179. Look at verse 6.

1180. So Solomon did what was

1181. evil in the sight of the

1182. Lord, and did not wholly

1183. follow the Lord as David's

  1184. father had done.

  1185. And then verse 9.

1186. And the Lord was angry with

  1187. Solomon because his heart

1188. had turned away from the

1189. Lord, the God of Israel,

1190. who had appeared to him

  1191. twice.

1192. Solomon allowed his heart to

  1193. become divided.

  1194. Again, he never renounced

1195. his faith or even his love

  1196. for God.

1197. But for all practical purposes,

1198. he really did because when

1199. his heart turned away from God,

1200. his heart turned to his

  1201. wives and false gods.

  1202. Solomon became an idolater.

  1203. Solomon became one who

  1204. worshipped things that were

1205. not even gods because his

  1206. wives captured his heart.

1207. He desired to please them more

1208. than he desired to please God.

  1209. Solomon's idolatry emphasizes

1210. how important it is for us

1211. to guard our hearts and guard

  1212. them every day.

1213. You know, today we're expected

1214. to accept everyone's view of

1215. the truth as being equally

  1216. valid.

1217. Every day, today, I mean, in

1218. this world in which we live

1219. today, if we're going to be

  1220. politically correct, if we're

1221. going to get along, if we're

1222. not going to get labeled as

  1223. some kind of extremist,

  1224. whatever anyone thinks,

  1225. whatever anyone considers to

1226. be true, we're supposed to

  1227. say, okay.

  1228. It's okay.

1229. You believe what you want to

  1230. believe, I believe what I

  1231. want to believe.

1232. You believe what you do and

  1233. it's true for you.

  1234. I believe what I want to

1235. believe and it's true for me.

1236. That's the way the world tells

  1237. us to think.

1238. That's the world tells us what

1239. we've got to do in order to

  1240. get along.

1241. That's what we've got to do in

1242. order to please the world.

1243. But if we try to please the

1244. world, we're going to be just

1245. like Solomon who tried to

1246. please his wives and the result

1247. will be we will compromise

  1248. God's word.

1249. Our hearts will be pulled away

1250. from God, from his will.

1251. Here's what we need to be

  1252. aware of.

1253. It's not going to happen

  1254. overnight.

  1255. It's going to happen

  1256. gradually.

1257. It's going to happen almost

  1258. unnoticeably.

1259. But a life made up of little

  1260. compromises here and there,

1261. year in and year out,

1262. will eventually result in a

1263. heart that's turned away from

1264. God just like Solomon's was.

1265. We need to learn from the

1266. mistakes of this wise fool.

1267. Solomon was smarter than any of

  1268. us in this room.

1269. Solomon had a gift from God

1270. that we do not have.

  1271. But because he compromised,

1272. because he did not guard his

1273. heart, he became the biggest

1274. fool from the heights he fell

  1275. from.

1276. He became a wise fool.

1277. Before we go, I want us to hear

1278. from one who was wiser than

  1279. Solomon, the only one.

  1280. The Lord Jesus Christ,

  1281. along the same line.

1282. Look at what he said.

1283. No one can serve two masters.

1284. For either he will hate the one

1285. and love the other, or he will

1286. be devoted to the one and

  1287. despise the other.

1288. You cannot serve God and money.

  1289. That's what Jesus said.

1290. You may think you can't because

  1291. Solomon thought he could.

1292. And in light of what we see in

1293. Solomon's life, we need to

1294. understand not only can we not

  1295. serve God and money

  1296. simultaneously, we can't serve

  1297. God and power.

1298. We can't serve God and sex.

1299. We can't serve God and anything

  1300. else.

1301. We must serve God wholeheartedly,

  1302. we're not at all.

1303. Jesus, as the old cliche says,

1304. Jesus must be Lord of all,

1305. or he will not be Lord at all.

1306. So I want to ask you, who are you

  1307. serving?

  1308. What are you serving?

1309. There's nothing in the world wrong

  1310. with wisely using power.

1311. Nothing in the world wrong with

  1312. wisely using wealth.

1313. Nothing in the world wrong with

1314. having strong sex drive and having

1315. those needs met in the context of a

1316. marriage, one man and one woman.

1317. But your heart, your wholehearted commitment,

1318. your wholehearted devotion must be,

1319. must rest upon the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1320. your heavenly Father.

1321. It cannot be divided between him and

  1322. anything else.

  1323. hear that word.

  1324. Don't compromise.

  1325. Guard your heart.

1326. Your life will never end well

  1327. if you don't.

  1328. Let's pray together.

  1329. Dear God,

1330. help us to see how we should respond

  1331. right now.

1332. Father, if there are people in this room

1333. who do not really have a relationship

1334. with you, their heart is not for you.

1335. It's for themselves or something else.

  1336. Dear God,

  1337. call them

1338. to turn from their sin

1339. and put their trust in Jesus

  1340. right now

  1341. for their salvation.

1342. If there's Christians in this room,

  1343. dear God, who

1344. have been more like Solomon

1345. and not guarded their heart

  1346. but made compromises,

  1347. convict them

  1348. and help them

1349. and help them to see

  1350. the importance right now

  1351. of confessing their sin,

  1352. renouncing these wrong allegiances

  1353. or wrong priorities.

  1354. Dear God,

1355. call them back right now

  1356. to wholehearted

  1357. love,

  1358. trust,

  1359. commitment to you.

1360. and in an attitude of prayer,

1361. let's listen to the Lord

  1362. and respond to Him.

1363. Do what God's calling you to do

1364. and I'd be glad to pray with you

  1365. here at the front

1366. if you'd like for me to pray with you

  1367. during this time.

  1368. you

  1369. to
