  1. Anytime you begin a service like we did with baptism, it makes it a special day.

  2. But today is special, not just for our church, but throughout the Christian church, throughout the world.

  3. Today is Palm Sunday.

  4. Today is the Sunday when we celebrate, think about Jesus making what has become known as His triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

  5. Could I help you there, sir?

  6. Sir, I know these things of which you speak, the triumphal entry.

  7. May I share them?

  8. Yes. Come on, share with us.

  9. Thank you.

  10. Good morning.

  11. Shalom.

  12. May the peace of God rest upon you this morning.

  13. Rejoice, O daughter of Zion.

  14. Shout for joy, O daughter of Jerusalem.

  15. For your king comes to you, riding upon a donkey, upon the foal of a donkey.

  16. Those were the words that the prophet Zechariah wrote 500 years before I saw those things that day.

  17. Today, I want to tell you what I saw with these eyes.

  18. The things that I heard with these ears.

  19. And now, what I know in my heart.

  20. You see, my name is Benjamin.

  21. In your language, you would say Benjamin.

  22. I am a shepherd.

  23. I tend the flocks like my ancestors before me.

  24. I live in a small village about six miles south of Jerusalem near Bethlehem.

  25. I was bringing sheep to Jerusalem.

  26. For it was the time of the Passover.

  27. Many people came from far away.

  28. And could not bring the sacrifice that was required.

  29. So we sold sheep that would be for sacrifice.

  30. They were the sheep as prescribed in the law of Moses.

  31. They were without spot, without blemish.

  32. And I came that day with sheep to be sold.

  33. You see, they were normally, for a man like me, from a small village.

  34. There were many people in Jerusalem, always.

  35. There were about 50,000 people that lived in the city.

  36. But now, at Passover, there were...

  37. Who could count?

  38. Because Moses, our great lawgiver, had said 1,400 years earlier,

  39. He wrote that every male of Israel was to come before the Lord three times each year.

  40. The Feast of Unleavened Bread, like now at Passover.

  41. And then again, at the Feast of Weeks.

  42. And the Feast of Booths.

  43. And then he said, and he must not come empty-handed.

  44. So the shepherds would live nearby, would bring sheep for to sell.

  45. That's why I was there that day.

  46. As I walked from my town up toward Jerusalem.

  47. It was a glorious morning.

  48. For the sun came up over the Mount of Olives.

  49. And its rays shone down on the city.

  50. And it gleamed like a jewel.

  51. The walls, those huge rock walls,

  52. almost appeared to be golden in color.

  53. But above all, was the temple.

  54. The center of worship for all Israel.

  55. And I thought as I walked that way,

  56. what a glorious sight.

  57. What our God has done.

  58. When I arrived at Jerusalem,

  59. I thought, things are very different today.

  60. People were stirring.

  61. People going about their business.

  62. And as I walked up those streets that wound through the city,

  63. toward the temple where I would sell the sheep,

  64. I noticed the Roman soldiers.

  65. They seemed to just be everywhere.

  66. But they were different this time.

  67. They seemed to be very watchful.

  68. Very alert.

  69. And you never saw just one.

  70. There were always two, three, four, maybe more.

  71. And one of the things that was very obvious.

  72. They all carried the gladius.

  73. The gladius was that short sword

  74. that they used for fighting very close by.

  75. And I thought,

  76. What?

  77. What are they watching?

  78. They just stood.

  79. And their eyes moved back and forth

  80. as they watched.

  81. And I thought,

  82. What are they watching for?

  83. Are they expecting an uprising?

  84. What?

  85. What?

  86. I did not know.

  87. But I thought,

  88. I must be careful.

  89. For they must know something I do not.

  90. I moved on toward the temple.

  91. And I saw small groups of rabbis

  92. as they talked.

  93. Rabbis do not smile very much on a good day.

  94. But today,

  95. no one smiled.

  96. They were talking about something

  97. that was obviously of great importance.

  98. because their faces were hard.

  99. Their eyes were narrow.

  100. And they spoke quickly.

  101. And their hands moved fast as they talked.

  102. And I thought,

  103. What is this they talk about?

  104. What is this?

  105. First,

  106. there was the soldiers.

  107. And now,

  108. the rabbis.

  109. What is happening here?

  110. I did not know.

  111. Even the common people

  112. spoke in low and quiet tones.

  113. And if a stranger approached,

  114. they stopped talking.

  115. As if they were being very careful

  116. with their words.

  117. I thought,

  118. this is not a normal day

  119. at Passover.

  120. It was then

  121. that I saw

  122. a friend

  123. who was talking to a man

  124. that I did not know.

  125. as I approached,

  126. I heard my friend say,

  127. Do you think he will come?

  128. The man

  129. with which he spoke

  130. saw me

  131. and stopped talking.

  132. And he just

  133. looked at me.

  134. Never moved his head.

  135. Just turned his eyes

  136. toward me.

  137. And then back to my friend

  138. as if to say,

  139. Stop talking.

  140. My friend turned.

  141. And saw me.

  142. He smiled.

  143. And said to his friend,

  144. It's alright.

  145. It's just Benjamin.

  146. It's alright.

  147. And he asked again,

  148. Do you think he will come?

  149. And the man said,

  150. I do not know.

  151. But the entire city

  152. is looking for him.

  153. For the rulers of the people

  154. said,

  155. If anyone knew

  156. where he was,

  157. they should tell them.

  158. For they wanted

  159. to kill him.

  160. I thought,

  161. What?

  162. Kill him?

  163. For what?

  164. What had he done?

  165. my friend,

  166. my friend,

  167. I said,

  168. Why would they kill him?

  169. I said,

  170. I hear

  171. he has opened the eyes

  172. of the blind

  173. that he had caused

  174. the deaf to hear.

  175. He had loosed

  176. the tongue of the dumb

  177. and caused cripples

  178. to walk.

  179. Why would they kill him?

  180. Would they kill him

  181. for these things?

  182. I didn't understand.

  183. My friend said to me,

  184. Yes,

  185. all of these things

  186. are true.

  187. And just a few days ago,

  188. in Bethany,

  189. just beyond

  190. the Mount of Olives,

  191. he raised a man

  192. from the dead

  193. who had been dead

  194. for four days.

  195. and they want

  196. to kill him too.

  197. I thought,

  198. What?

  199. Kill him too?

  200. Why?

  201. As I thought

  202. about these things,

  203. there was a tension

  204. in the air

  205. that was

  206. very much

  207. like,

  208. I thought,

  209. like,

  210. the string

  211. on King David's harp

  212. that you,

  213. bing!

  214. That seemed to be

  215. the atmosphere

  216. in Jerusalem.

  217. It was then,

  218. all of a sudden,

  219. there was

  220. movement.

  221. And it was like

  222. the wave

  223. on the great sea

  224. as the people

  225. moved

  226. toward the gate

  227. that led

  228. to

  229. the Mount of Olives.

  230. I wanted to see

  231. what this was.

  232. So I too

  233. went

  234. when I could

  235. see,

  236. I could see

  237. a people

  238. coming

  239. across the top

  240. of the hill

  241. and down

  242. that road

  243. that wound

  244. down the

  245. Mount of Olives

  246. toward the

  247. Brook Kidron.

  248. and there

  249. were people

  250. from Jerusalem

  251. going up

  252. to meet

  253. them.

  254. And as I

  255. looked,

  256. I could

  257. hear

  258. the words,

  259. I could

  260. see

  261. some

  262. carried palm

  263. branches

  264. and they

  265. laid them

  266. in the road.

  267. I thought,

  268. what is

  269. this?

  270. they do

  271. that for

  272. kings,

  273. for people

  274. of great

  275. power.

  276. What do

  277. they do?

  278. Some

  279. even took

  280. off their

  281. garment

  282. and laid

  283. it in the

  284. roadway.

  285. I thought,

  286. what?

  287. God,

  288. that you

  289. did only,

  290. it was a

  291. symbol

  292. of

  293. submission

  294. to the

  295. authority

  296. of the

  297. one coming.

  298. I thought,

  299. what is

  300. this?

  301. And then

  302. I heard

  303. their voices

  304. as they

  305. said,

  306. Hosanna!

  307. Blessed

  308. is he

  309. who comes

  310. in the

  311. name of

  312. the Lord.

  313. Hosanna

  314. in the

  315. highest.

  316. I thought,

  317. Hosanna!

  318. Save us

  319. now!

  320. What did

  321. they say?

  322. Do they

  323. believe that

  324. this is the

  325. Messiah?

  326. And I

  327. watched

  328. as they

  329. came down,

  330. down,

  331. down the

  332. Mount of

  333. Olives.

  334. And at

  335. one point

  336. they stopped

  337. and it

  338. appeared

  339. that the

  340. prophet,

  341. riding on

  342. the donkey,

  343. was weeping.

  344. I watched.

  345. I did

  346. not know

  347. then

  348. why

  349. he wept.

  350. I would

  351. learn later.

  352. The events

  353. of that

  354. week

  355. in Jerusalem

  356. moved

  357. very

  358. rapidly.

  359. I did

  360. not

  361. understand

  362. it all.

  363. But

  364. later

  365. that week

  366. I heard

  367. that this

  368. prophet

  369. had been

  370. arrested

  371. by the

  372. temple

  373. guard.

  374. He had

  375. been taken

  376. before the

  377. Sanhedrin,

  378. the ruling

  379. body of

  380. our people.

  381. men

  382. and because

  383. of the

  384. witness

  385. of men

  386. that had

  387. been paid

  388. money,

  389. he was

  390. condemned.

  391. But he

  392. was taken

  393. to the

  394. Roman

  395. governor,

  396. Pilate,

  397. where he

  398. was cruelly

  399. treated

  400. and again

  401. falsely

  402. accused.

  403. and there

  404. he was

  405. condemned

  406. to die

  407. by crucifixion.

  408. He was

  409. crucified

  410. between

  411. two

  412. thieves

  413. and died.

  414. when he

  415. died,

  416. it was

  417. noontime

  418. and the

  419. sky became

  420. as black

  421. as midnight

  422. and the

  423. earth shook

  424. as if

  425. something

  426. happened

  427. that had

  428. never happened

  429. before

  430. and would

  431. never happen

  432. again.

  433. there was

  434. a rumor

  435. that three

  436. days later

  437. he rose

  438. from the

  439. dead.

  440. I did

  441. not know

  442. these things

  443. and I

  444. returned

  445. to my

  446. village

  447. and I

  448. thought

  449. about

  450. what I

  451. had seen,

  452. what I

  453. had heard

  454. and I

  455. wondered

  456. what

  457. is God

  458. doing

  459. in Jerusalem?

  460. A few

  461. weeks

  462. passed

  463. and I

  464. was back

  465. in Jerusalem

  466. for the

  467. feast of

  468. Pentecost.

  469. There was

  470. another

  471. crowd

  472. and this

  473. time in

  474. the temple

  475. there was

  476. a crowd

  477. gathered

  478. and one

  479. of the

  480. prophet's

  481. disciples

  482. the one

  483. they call

  484. Cephas

  485. Peter

  486. was addressing

  487. the crowd

  488. and he

  489. was explaining

  490. to them

  491. they had

  492. questions

  493. they said

  494. they had

  495. heard the

  496. sound of

  497. a great

  498. wind

  499. but there

  500. was no

  501. wind

  502. they said

  503. the disciples

  504. of this

  505. prophet

  506. were drunk

  507. and all

  508. kinds of

  509. things

  510. and Peter

  511. was

  512. explaining

  513. no

  514. this was

  515. simply

  516. the

  517. fulfillment

  518. of another

  519. ancient

  520. prophecy

  521. and with

  522. many words

  523. Peter

  524. explained

  525. that this

  526. prophet from

  527. Nazareth

  528. this Jesus

  529. was indeed

  530. the Christ

  531. the hope

  532. of Israel

  533. as I

  534. listened

  535. to those

  536. words

  537. my heart

  538. was stirred

  539. and I

  540. knew

  541. that what

  542. he said

  543. was true

  544. it was

  545. that day

  546. that I

  547. Benjamin

  548. the shepherd

  549. became a

  550. follower

  551. of this

  552. man

  553. Jesus

  554. who is

  555. the Messiah

  556. but it

  557. was also

  558. a sad

  559. day

  560. for me

  561. a great

  562. day

  563. but I

  564. thought

  565. about

  566. Israel

  567. God

  568. you see

  569. one

  570. few weeks

  571. earlier

  572. when the

  573. prophet

  574. rode on

  575. the donkey

  576. and came

  577. to Jerusalem

  578. our

  579. great

  580. God

  581. was

  582. presenting

  583. the Messiah

  584. to his

  585. people

  586. but

  587. he

  588. was

  589. just

  590. as

  591. Isaiah

  592. had

  593. said

  594. despised

  595. and

  596. rejected

  597. what a

  598. sad

  599. day

  600. for

  601. Israel

  602. some

  603. years

  604. later

  605. the

  606. apostle

  607. John

  608. wrote

  609. these

  610. words

  611. referring

  612. to

  613. Jesus

  614. the

  615. Messiah

  616. he

  617. said

  618. he

  619. came

  620. to his

  621. own

  622. creation

  623. think of

  624. that

  625. when

  626. God

  627. became

  628. man

  629. and left

  630. the glory

  631. that was

  632. his

  633. in heaven

  634. and came

  635. to earth

  636. he

  637. came

  638. unto

  639. his

  640. own

  641. creation

  642. and his

  643. own

  644. people

  645. my

  646. people

  647. the

  648. nation

  649. of

  650. Israel

  651. did

  652. not

  653. receive

  654. him

  655. they

  656. rejected

  657. him

  658. what

  659. sad

  660. words

  661. but

  662. John

  663. also

  664. wrote

  665. but

  666. as

  667. many

  668. as

  669. received

  670. him

  671. to

  672. them

  673. he

  674. gave

  675. the

  676. right

  677. the

  678. authority

  679. to

  680. become

  681. the

  682. sons

  683. of

  684. God

  685. even

  686. to

  687. them

  688. that

  689. believe

  690. on

  691. his

  692. name

  693. you

  694. know

  695. my

  696. friends

  697. our

  698. great

  699. God

  700. still

  701. today

  702. makes

  703. that

  704. same

  705. offer

  706. to

  707. you

  708. and

  709. all

  710. heaven

  711. awaits

  712. your

  713. choice

  714. God

  715. awaits

  716. your

  717. choice

  718. what

  719. will

  720. you

  721. do

  722. with

  723. Messiah

  724. will

  725. you

  726. receive

  727. him

  728. as

  729. I

  730. and

  731. now

  732. adopted

  733. into

  734. the

  735. family

  736. of

  737. God

  738. and

  739. am

  740. known

  741. of

  742. God

  743. ah

  744. what

  745. the

  746. relationship

  747. will

  748. you

  749. receive

  750. him

  751. or

  752. will

  753. you

  754. reject

  755. him

  756. God

  757. still

  758. offers

  759. today

  760. would

  761. you

  762. pray

  763. let's

  764. pray

  765. together

  766. father

  767. we

  768. have

  769. heard

  770. this

  771. message

  772. of

  773. good

  774. news

  775. about

  776. why

  777. Jesus

  778. came

  779. into

  780. this

  781. world

  782. why

  783. he

  784. went

  785. to

  786. Jerusalem

  787. on

  788. that

  789. Sunday

  790. father

  791. make it

  792. clear

  793. to

  794. everyone

  795. in this

  796. room

  797. that

  798. you

  799. sent

  800. your

  801. son

  802. into

  803. this

  804. world

  805. to

  806. save

  807. sinners

  808. people

  809. who

  810. recognize

  811. that

  812. they

  813. have

  814. sinned

  815. that

  816. they

  817. have

  818. failed

  819. you

  820. that

  821. they

  822. do

  823. not

  824. have

  825. a

  826. relationship

  827. with

  828. you

  829. lord

  830. if

  831. there's

  832. anyone

  833. in this

  834. room

  835. right

  836. now

  837. that

  838. that

  839. is

  840. where

  841. they

  842. are

  843. away

  844. from

  845. you

  846. so

  847. work

  848. in

  849. them

  850. to

  851. give

  852. them

  853. the

  854. desire

  855. to

  856. trust

  857. Jesus

  858. help

  859. them

  860. to

  861. understand

  862. that

  863. when

  864. he

  865. died

  866. on

  867. the

  868. cross

  869. he

  870. actually

  871. took

  872. their

  873. punishment

  874. the

  875. punishment

  876. that

  877. their

  878. sin

  879. deserves

  880. help

  881. them

  882. to

  883. know

  884. that

  885. if

  886. they

  887. will

  888. call

  889. upon

  890. Jesus

  891. to

  892. save

  893. them

  894. that

  895. he

  896. will

  897. that

  898. you

  899. will

  900. forgive

  901. them

  902. you

  903. will

  904. make

  905. them

  906. your

  907. child

  908. father

  909. we

  910. thank

  911. you

  912. for

  913. that

  914. promise

  915. from

  916. your

  917. word

  918. that

  919. we

  920. just

  921. heard

  922. for

  923. as

  924. many

  925. has

  926. received

  927. him

  928. he

  929. gave

  930. the

  931. right

  932. to

  933. become

  934. children

  935. of

  936. God

  937. even

  938. to

  939. them

  940. that

  941. believe

  942. upon

  943. his

  944. name

  945. so

  946. father

  947. right

  948. now

  949. we

  950. pray

  951. so

  952. work

  953. to

  954. compel

  955. that

  956. man

  957. or

  958. woman

  959. or

  960. young

  961. person

  962. who

  963. does

  964. not

  965. know

  966. Christ

  967. to

  968. call

  969. upon

  970. him

  971. to

  972. save

  973. them

  974. Lord

  975. for

  976. many

  977. of us

  978. in this

  979. room

  980. right

  981. now

  982. we

  983. are

  984. believers

  985. we

  986. do

  987. trust

  988. Jesus

  989. but father

  990. help us

  991. to think

  992. right

  993. now

  994. do

  995. other

  996. people

  997. see

  998. him

  999. in my

  1000. life

  1001. and

  1002. am

  1003. I

  1004. taking

  1005. the

  1006. opportunity

  1007. that I

  1008. have

  1009. to share

  1010. this

  1011. good

  1012. news

  1013. with

  1014. family

  1015. members

  1016. or

  1017. friends

  1018. or

  1019. classmates

  1020. or people

  1021. I work

  1022. with

  1023. or live

  1024. near

  1025. help us

  1026. father

  1027. who

  1028. have

  1029. experienced

  1030. the

  1031. life

  1032. changing

  1033. work

  1034. that you

  1035. do

  1036. when you

  1037. save

  1038. us

  1039. help us

  1040. father

  1041. to

  1042. share

  1043. that

  1044. good

  1045. news

  1046. of how

  1047. that

  1048. change

  1049. can happen

  1050. in other

  1051. people's

  1052. lives

  1053. lives

  1054. let's

  1055. just be

  1056. still

  1057. and quiet

  1058. in an

  1059. attitude

  1060. of prayer

  1061. heads

  1062. bowed

  1063. and eyes

  1064. closed

  1065. and you

  1066. listen to

  1067. the Lord

  1068. and you

  1069. respond as

  1070. he speaks

  1071. to you

  1072. right now

  1073. I'd be

  1074. happy to

  1075. pray with

  1076. you

  1077. here at

  1078. the front

  1079. right now

  1080. you'll come

  1081. down during

  1082. these next

  1083. few minutes

  1084. as our

  1085. instrumentalists

  1086. play

  1087. and we

  1088. pray
