  1. I appreciate your being here for the whole service

  2. and the way we're going to end this service

  3. because it is designed to be from beginning to end

  4. a time of celebrating

  5. what God has done for us in Christ,

  6. not just His death on the cross for our sins,

  7. but His victorious resurrection,

  8. His demonstration that Jesus has conquered

  9. sin, death,

  10. even defeated the devil

  11. through His triumphant resurrection.

  12. But I want to ask you as an individual,

  13. is this truly a time of celebration for you?

  14. Everybody knows Easter is supposed to be

  15. a celebration service like what we've had,

  16. but for you as an individual,

  17. is there this sense of, feelings of, thoughts of,

  18. real joy, celebration,

  19. thanking God, praising God

  20. for what He has done for you

  21. in the death and resurrection of Jesus?

  22. I want you to look with me, if you would,

  23. at the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 15,

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  24. where the Apostle Paul explains the resurrection

  25. in the most detail that you'll find anywhere

  26. in the New Testament.

  27. The Apostle Paul helps us understand

  28. various reasons why we should truly be excited,

  29. happy, celebrating the resurrection this morning.

  30. There's all kinds of things from chapter 1

  31. through the end of the chapter

  32. that explains the significance of,

  33. the historical reality of,

  34. what it means that Christ arose.

  35. If you've never read 1 Corinthians 15,

  36. if you're not familiar with it,

  37. I'd encourage you to read it this day,

  38. this Easter Sunday.

  39. But right now,

  40. I want us to read together verses 12 through 20.

  41. And what you're going to see,

  42. Paul explains the significance of the resurrection

  43. from the perspective of

  44. what we would not have

  45. if Christ had not risen.

  46. So understand,

  47. that's how he's explaining the resurrection

  48. in these verses.

  49. Let's read it together.

  50. Verse 12, 1 Corinthians 15.

  51. Now, if Christ is proclaimed

  52. as raised from the dead,

  53. how can some of you say

  54. that there is no resurrection of the dead?

  55. Some in that church

  56. were saying,

  57. there's no such thing as a resurrection.

  58. People don't come back to lie.

  59. The body certainly would not be.

  60. They were under the influence

  61. of Greek philosophy maybe.

  62. Some of them were just under the influence

  63. of unbelief.

  64. They just struggled with it.

  65. Verse 13,

  66. But if there is no resurrection of the dead,

  67. then not even Christ has been raised.

  68. And if Christ has not been raised,

  69. then our preaching is in vain

  70. and your faith is in vain.

  71. We are even found to be misrepresenting God

  72. because we testified about God

  73. that He raised Christ

  74. whom He did not raise

  75. if it's true that the dead are not raised.

  76. For if the dead are not raised,

  77. not even Christ has been raised.

  78. And if Christ has not been raised,

  79. your faith is futile

  80. and you are still in your sins.

  81. Then those also

  82. who have fallen asleep in Christ

  83. have perished.

  84. He's telling them,

  85. your family members and friends

  86. who died as Christians,

  87. they're doomed.

  88. They've perished.

  89. There's no hope.

  90. Verse 19,

  91. If in Christ

  92. we have hope in this life only,

  93. we are of all people

  94. most to be pitied.

  95. But in fact,

  96. Christ has been raised from the dead,

  97. the first fruits

  98. of those who have fallen asleep.

  99. I want us to look at a couple of reasons

  100. why we must celebrate the resurrection.

  101. We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus

  102. because it assures us of God's forgiveness.

  103. Paul states this truth,

  104. what you would consider in a negative way

  105. in verse 17.

  106. Look at it again.

  107. And if Christ has not been raised,

  108. your faith is futile.

  109. Some translations say

  110. worthless,

  111. useless.

  112. You are still in your sins.

  113. If Jesus Christ did not rise from the grave,

  114. what Paul is saying is,

  115. you are still guilty of sin

  116. and under the condemnation of sin.

  117. You are separated from God by your sin.

  118. You have no hope,

  119. if Christ has not been raised,

  120. of forgiveness,

  121. of ever being made right with God.

  122. You will pay the penalty for your own sins,

  123. is what he's saying here.

  124. If Christ has not been raised,

  125. your faith is absolutely worthless,

  126. of no value.

  127. You are still in your sins,

  128. condemned,

  129. doomed,

  130. the separation from God for all eternity,

  131. in hell.

  132. But the good news,

  133. what Paul is trying to stress

  134. from every conceivable angle,

  135. is that Christ did rise from the grave.

  136. And so,

  137. we could just restate this

  138. from a more positive perspective like this.

  139. Since Christ has been raised,

  140. your faith is priceless.

  141. You are forgiven,

  142. set free from the guilt

  143. and power of your sins.

  144. We are here today

  145. because Jesus Christ is alive.

  146. You know,

  147. there are people who are involved

  148. in world religions,

  149. and their key figure,

  150. their prophet,

  151. is dead.

  152. And they know he's dead.

  153. And many people travel

  154. to see the grave,

  155. the tomb,

  156. that holds their founder's bones.

  157. But as Christians,

  158. if we choose to go to the place,

  159. the tomb where Jesus

  160. was buried,

  161. it's open.

  162. There's nothing there

  163. because he arose

  164. three days after he died.

  165. He is alive today.

  166. He is coming back

  167. literally into this world

  168. for his people

  169. one day.

  170. The resurrection

  171. is a historical reality.

  172. I want you to understand that.

  173. what Christians believe

  174. is not just wishful thinking.

  175. It's not just some type

  176. of mystical religion.

  177. It's not some philosophy

  178. somebody invented.

  179. The Christian faith

  180. is based on things

  181. that really happened

  182. in time

  183. 2,000 years ago.

  184. Jesus

  185. appeared.

  186. He died.

  187. He was buried.

  188. He arose.

  189. And he appeared

  190. to many different people

  191. in many locations

  192. over a period of time.

  193. I want you to look back up

  194. in 1 Corinthians 15.

  195. Note in verse 5

  196. that it said

  197. he appeared

  198. to all these people.

  199. He appeared to Cephas.

  200. That's Peter.

  201. Another name for Peter.

  202. Then to the 12.

  203. Then he appeared

  204. to more than 500 brothers

  205. at one time.

  206. Most of whom

  207. are still alive.

  208. Though some

  209. have fallen asleep.

  210. Then he appeared

  211. to James.

  212. And then to all

  213. the apostles

  214. last of all

  215. as to one

  216. untimely born

  217. he appeared

  218. also

  219. to me.

  220. Now these

  221. appearances

  222. to all these

  223. different people

  224. different places

  225. different geographical

  226. locations

  227. they took place

  228. over

  229. a 40 day period.

  230. Look in Acts

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  231. chapter 1.

  232. It says

  233. after his suffering

  234. he presented himself

  235. to them

  236. and gave many

  237. convincing proofs

  238. that he was alive.

  239. He appeared to them

  240. over a period

  241. of 40 days

  242. and spoke about

  243. the kingdom of God.

  244. What happened

  245. was not just

  246. some people

  247. had some kind

  248. of dream

  249. got caught up

  250. in some excitement

  251. the emotion

  252. of the day

  253. of a couple

  254. of day period.

  255. Jesus

  256. appeared to

  257. all

  258. different

  259. kinds

  260. groups

  261. sizes

  262. of people

  263. not talking

  264. about fat

  265. and skinny

  266. and tall

  267. and short

  268. I'm talking

  269. about one

  270. or two

  271. a big crowd

  272. a little crowd

  273. over a period

  274. of 40 days.

  275. You see

  276. the point

  277. that the Bible

  278. writers are

  279. trying to say

  280. trying to make

  281. when they talk

  282. about the

  283. resurrection

  284. of Jesus

  285. like this

  286. it really

  287. happened

  288. there were

  289. eyewitnesses

  290. who verified

  291. it

  292. you can

  293. bank on

  294. the fact

  295. that the

  296. resurrection

  297. is a historical

  298. reality

  299. but also

  300. the resurrection

  301. changed the

  302. lives of his

  303. followers.

  304. Most of you

  305. in this room

  306. know that

  307. when Jesus

  308. was arrested

  309. his disciples

  310. scattered

  311. they were

  312. afraid

  313. they ran

  314. after Jesus

  315. was crucified

  316. and put in

  317. that tomb

  318. before

  319. they saw

  320. him

  321. before he

  322. arose from

  323. the grave

  324. they were

  325. still hiding

  326. out.

  327. In fact

  328. some of the

  329. times when

  330. Jesus appeared

  331. to his

  332. disciples

  333. they were

  334. hiding out.

  335. They were

  336. behind locked

  337. doors

  338. when he

  339. appeared to

  340. them.

  341. But after

  342. the crucifixion

  343. after they

  344. saw the

  345. resurrected

  346. Jesus

  347. and after

  348. they were

  349. filled with

  350. the spirit

  351. of God

  352. on the day

  353. of Pentecost

  354. that you can

  355. read about

  356. in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  357. chapter 2

  358. they came

  359. out of

  360. hiding

  361. and they

  362. preached

  363. the gospel

  364. the good

  365. news about

  366. the death

  367. and resurrection

  368. of Jesus

  369. they preached

  370. it to

  371. everyone

  372. that they

  373. could find.

  374. They stood

  375. before the

  376. people they

  377. had been

  378. hiding from.

  379. They stood

  380. before the

  381. people who

  382. were responsible

  383. for killing

  384. Jesus.

  385. They stood

  386. time and time

  387. again after they

  388. were warned

  389. don't do this

  390. anymore.

  391. Stop talking

  392. about him.

  393. Don't say

  394. this junk

  395. that Jesus

  396. is alive.

  397. They still

  398. said it

  399. after they

  400. were beaten

  401. after they

  402. were imprisoned

  403. after some

  404. one of the

  405. apostles the

  406. first martyr

  407. James

  408. was killed.

  409. the disciples

  410. they saw

  411. Jesus

  412. that changed

  413. their life

  414. especially after

  415. they were

  416. filled with

  417. the Holy

  418. Spirit.

  419. This helps

  420. us see the

  421. Christian message

  422. it's not

  423. just a

  424. message about

  425. the cross.

  426. It's not just

  427. a message about

  428. the death of

  429. Jesus as

  430. important as

  431. that is.

  432. it is equally

  433. about an

  434. empty tomb.

  435. The gospel

  436. that we

  437. believe if we

  438. believe it

  439. the one that

  440. we're called

  441. to share with

  442. other people

  443. is that Jesus

  444. died on the

  445. cross as our

  446. substitute

  447. to experience

  448. the death

  449. that we deserve

  450. because we're

  451. the ones who

  452. are guilty of

  453. sin.

  454. His death

  455. was real.

  456. He was buried

  457. in a sealed

  458. tomb.

  459. But that's

  460. not the end

  461. of the story.

  462. Jesus arose

  463. came forth

  464. from that

  465. tomb.

  466. He came

  467. back to

  468. life.

  469. And in

  470. coming back

  471. to life

  472. being seen

  473. like he

  474. did

  475. he demonstrated

  476. he proved

  477. that the

  478. penalty for

  479. sin had been

  480. paid and

  481. God had

  482. accepted it.

  483. Chuck Swindoll

  484. describes this

  485. in a very good

  486. way.

  487. Look at his

  488. statement.

  489. He says we

  490. know that

  491. Christ

  492. death completed

  493. the work of

  494. atonement

  495. because God

  496. raised him

  497. from the

  498. dead.

  499. If God

  500. had not been

  501. satisfied in

  502. the death

  503. of his

  504. son the

  505. son would

  506. have remained

  507. a lifeless

  508. corpse in

  509. the tomb.

  510. When the

  511. father raised

  512. the son it

  513. represented his

  514. stamp of

  515. approval.

  516. The

  517. resurrection of

  518. Jesus means

  519. that everyone

  520. who truly

  521. puts their

  522. faith and

  523. trust in

  524. him

  525. can have

  526. confidence

  527. my sins

  528. are forgiven.

  529. I want you

  530. to understand

  531. if you are a

  532. true believer

  533. follower of

  534. Jesus

  535. if you are

  536. really and

  537. truly united

  538. him by

  539. faith

  540. the penalty

  541. for your

  542. sins has

  543. been paid

  544. you need to

  545. be confident

  546. of your

  547. forgiveness.

  548. You don't

  549. need to be

  550. dragging around

  551. the weight

  552. of guilt

  553. any longer

  554. because Jesus

  555. suffered what

  556. you should have

  557. suffered.

  558. He paid

  559. the price

  560. your actions

  561. deserve.

  562. Don't be a

  563. prisoner of

  564. your past

  565. sin and

  566. guilt if you

  567. are truly

  568. trusting in

  569. Jesus.

  570. Leave your

  571. past behind.

  572. Forget it.

  573. The penalty

  574. has been

  575. paid.

  576. Move forward

  577. with confidence

  578. that you are a

  579. child of God

  580. forgiven,

  581. cleansed.

  582. The penalty

  583. for your sin

  584. has been paid.

  585. The power of

  586. sin has been

  587. broken.

  588. Trust him.

  589. Now if you're

  590. not a Christian

  591. I want you to

  592. understand that

  593. what I've just

  594. said to

  595. Christians this

  596. can become

  597. true about

  598. you.

  599. But what

  600. you've got to

  601. do is you've

  602. got to come

  603. clean with

  604. God and

  605. admit your

  606. sin, your

  607. rebellion against

  608. him, your

  609. breaking of

  610. his law.

  611. You're choosing

  612. to live your

  613. way instead of

  614. his way.

  615. And if that

  616. really and

  617. truly bothers

  618. you it'll

  619. grieve you.

  620. You'll be

  621. able to

  622. sincerely express

  623. sorrow to

  624. God for the

  625. way that you

  626. have sinned

  627. against him

  628. and truly

  629. turn from

  630. that mindset

  631. way of

  632. life.

  633. I encourage

  634. you to

  635. don't just

  636. turn from

  637. your sin but

  638. turn to God

  639. in faith.

  640. Trust that

  641. when Jesus

  642. died on the

  643. cross he

  644. died in your

  645. place taking

  646. your punishment.

  647. Trust him.

  648. Put your

  649. confidence in

  650. him.

  651. Depend upon

  652. him for your

  653. salvation.

  654. call upon

  655. him right

  656. now to

  657. come into

  658. your life

  659. and save

  660. you.

  661. Surrender

  662. it to him

  663. now.

  664. Let him

  665. know that

  666. from this

  667. day forward

  668. you're going

  669. to follow

  670. him.

  671. No one

  672. else, not

  673. even yourself,

  674. but he is

  675. going to be

  676. your Lord.

  677. Now I

  678. want to

  679. remind everyone

  680. in this room,

  681. every single

  682. person, regardless

  683. of what your

  684. relationship

  685. with God

  686. is.

  687. Saving

  688. faith is

  689. continuing

  690. faith.

  691. Look where

  692. we are in

  693. 1 Corinthians

  694. 15.

  695. Look at the

  696. first two

  697. verses.

  698. Paul writes

  699. to these

  700. people,

  701. Now I

  702. would remind

  703. you, brothers,

  704. of the

  705. gospel I

  706. preached to

  707. you, which

  708. you received,

  709. in which you

  710. stand, and by

  711. which you are

  712. being saved, if

  713. you hold fast to

  714. the word I

  715. preached to

  716. you, unless

  717. you believed in

  718. vain.

  719. hear me.

  720. There are

  721. many people

  722. who could say

  723. on any

  724. Easter Sunday

  725. morning, I

  726. believe Jesus

  727. is real, that

  728. he lived in

  729. this world, that

  730. he died on a

  731. cross, he was

  732. buried in a

  733. tomb, and I

  734. believe he arose

  735. from the grave.

  736. But you only

  737. believe that as

  738. historical facts,

  739. the truth is,

  740. you don't

  741. trust him.

  742. You're not

  743. trusting him as

  744. your Savior.

  745. You're not

  746. committed to him

  747. as the Lord of

  748. your life.

  749. You've never

  750. really and

  751. truly repented

  752. of your sins,

  753. changed your

  754. mind, turned

  755. from sin, and

  756. put your faith

  757. in Jesus, surrendered

  758. all to him, and

  759. continued to

  760. trust him.

  761. I became a

  762. Christian a long

  763. time ago, many

  764. years ago now.

  765. But you know

  766. why I know that

  767. he is my Lord

  768. this morning?

  769. Not because of

  770. some kind of

  771. decision I made

  772. many years ago,

  773. but because I'm

  774. trusting him right

  775. now, this moment,

  776. as my Savior.

  777. I'm surrendered

  778. to him right now

  779. as my Lord.

  780. Truth is,

  781. I failed him on

  782. many occasions.

  783. Truth is,

  784. sometimes I am

  785. selfish, and I

  786. just choose to do

  787. what I want to do

  788. instead of what he

  789. wants me to do.

  790. Every Christian in

  791. here, that's your

  792. testimony, isn't it?

  793. But the way that we

  794. know we really are

  795. the Lord's is

  796. because as

  797. Christians, the

  798. Spirit of God

  799. lives within us.

  800. And when we

  801. rebel, when we

  802. ignore God, when we

  803. live our way instead

  804. of his way, sooner

  805. or later, the Spirit

  806. of God convicts us,

  807. inflicts guilt upon

  808. us.

  809. God disciplines us

  810. if we're really his

  811. children.

  812. And he does that to

  813. wake us up, to get

  814. our attention, and to

  815. call us back to

  816. himself.

  817. If you don't have

  818. that experience, if

  819. you don't understand

  820. what I'm talking

  821. about, according to

  822. Scripture, I just

  823. don't see how you

  824. could call yourself a

  825. Christian.

  826. Because saving

  827. faith is continuing

  828. faith.

  829. John 3, 16, that

  830. most everybody in

  831. this room has at

  832. least heard of, for

  833. God so loved the

  834. world that he gave

  835. his only begotten

  836. Son, that whoever

  837. believes in him will

  838. not perish but have

  839. everlasting life.

  840. It talks about whoever

  841. believes in him.

  842. It's not talking about

  843. believes in him one

  844. day in the past.

  845. It's talking about

  846. whoever believes in

  847. him continuously.

  848. Whoever trusts him,

  849. whoever has a

  850. relationship with him,

  851. is the one who will

  852. not perish but have

  853. everlasting life.

  854. So I want to ask you

  855. on this Resurrection

  856. Sunday, the Sunday

  857. that we should be

  858. celebrating, can you

  859. celebrate your

  860. relationship with the

  861. risen Lord Jesus?

  862. thank him for your

  863. forgiveness.

  864. Thank him for the

  865. eternal life that is

  866. yours now and forever.

  867. If you can, do it.

  868. Celebrate.

  869. Praise and worship him.

  870. But if you can't, then

  871. right now, this moment,

  872. humble yourself before

  873. him, the risen Lord.

  874. You may be a church

  875. member, you may be a

  876. church leader.

  877. You may be a church

  878. leader.

  879. Here are some other

  880. church.

  881. But if you don't have

  882. this real relationship,

  883. if there's not real

  884. life-altering faith,

  885. trust, confidence in your

  886. heart for this Lord,

  887. I encourage you right now,

  888. admit it to God,

  889. repent of your sins,

  890. put your trust in Jesus,

  891. call upon him to save you

  892. now.

  893. I want us to bow

  894. together.

  895. I want us to spend this

  896. time right now responding

  897. to the Lord as he speaks

  898. to you.

  899. That's all you need to do.

  900. Listen to him.

  901. He is fully capable of

  902. making it clear what you

  903. need to do.

  904. You just obey him.

  905. And then,

  906. ask him to help you to

  907. take it one day at a

  908. time,

  909. one hour at a time,

  910. as you move forward from

  911. here.

  912. After I pray,

  913. I'm going to be here at

  914. the front.

  915. If you'd like for me to

  916. pray with you,

  917. talk with you about your

  918. relationship with the

  919. Lord, I'll be happy to do

  920. that.

  921. If you know someone that

  922. you'd rather talk to,

  923. about your relationship

  924. with the Lord,

  925. and they're in this room,

  926. go and talk to them now.

  927. Go and talk to them

  928. before the sun goes down

  929. today.

  930. This Easter Sunday,

  931. 2017,

  932. can be a day for everyone

  933. to celebrate

  934. because everyone can

  935. come to Christ

  936. if you want to

  937. and if you will

  938. the way that he says.

  939. So let's pray.

  940. Dear God,

  941. show us how we should

  942. respond to you.

  943. Dear God,

  944. work in people's hearts

  945. who are not Christians

  946. to call them to trust

  947. Jesus.

  948. Show them that when

  949. Jesus died on the cross,

  950. it was for their sins.

  951. Help them to know it's

  952. because you love them

  953. that you sent Jesus to do

  954. that.

  955. Help them to understand,

  956. dear God,

  957. that this Jesus is not

  958. dead,

  959. but is alive.

  960. And so,

  961. help them right now

  962. to call upon him

  963. to come into their life

  964. and be their savior

  965. and surrender their life

  966. to him as their living

  967. Lord,

  968. master,

  969. boss right now.

  970. And in this attitude

  971. of prayer,

  972. let's just be still

  973. and quiet

  974. as musicians play.

  975. Again,

  976. I'd be happy to speak

  977. with you here at the front,

  978. pray with you

  979. you come forward

  980. during this time.
