  1. Does it matter how someone lives in the world today?

  2. Think about it.

  3. Does it really matter how you live?

  4. Generally speaking, you know, there are people who think in today's world,

  5. we're not like we used to be.

  6. Everybody just sort of does what they want to do.

  7. So just do what you want to do.

  8. Don't worry about it.

  9. There shouldn't be a problem doing that.

  10. Well, if you think that way, I don't know where you've been.

  11. You certainly have not read or listened to any news.

  12. It seems that almost every week, a politician, a business executive,

  13. a TV personality, or an athlete is caught saying or doing something that just ruins their life.

  14. Some of you most probably in here know some of this.

  15. A state senator in Florida forced to resign this past week for his outburst.

  16. Some of his colleagues, racial slurs, just hard, tough things he said.

  17. And the outcry was such.

  18. It mattered.

  19. He's no longer a state senator.

  20. Bill O'Reilly, number one show on Fox.

  21. Forced out.

  22. No more the O'Reilly factor.

  23. Accusations of sexual immorality.

  24. The list can go on and on.

  25. Politicians.

  26. Business leaders.

  27. Church leaders.

  28. And on lower levels, not so much in the big headlines,

  29. but situations that we're familiar with.

  30. People say things, they do things, and it misrepresents,

  31. or it causes the wrong kind of attention to their company,

  32. or their colleagues, or their school, or their team.

  33. And they pay for it.

  34. They suffer for it.

  35. Now, many people who this happens to,

  36. they'll come out and they'll apologize.

  37. They'll apologize for the way they have reflected so poorly

  38. on certain people or organizations that they represent.

  39. University of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield

  40. has been a very public example of this.

  41. He was arrested back in February

  42. for public drunkenness, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest,

  43. and a few other infractions, the story goes.

  44. Three days later, he issued a very lengthy apology

  45. that demonstrates his awareness

  46. that it matters how you live.

  47. It matters a lot

  48. how you represent certain people, organizations.

  49. I want you to look at part of his statement.

  50. He said,

  51. I sincerely apologize for my actions early Saturday morning.

  52. I apologize to President Boren, Coach Stoops, and Coach Riley

  53. for conducting myself in a manner that does not correctly represent

  54. the way the University of Oklahoma should be represented.

  55. I know better than to bring bad attention and scrutiny

  56. to the school and people that I love.

  57. Next, I apologize to my family and close friends.

  58. To my parents and brother,

  59. I am extremely sorry for bringing this embarrassment

  60. to the Mayfield name.

  61. I was raised better.

  62. I want you to think.

  63. If it matters how athletes and politicians

  64. and business executives and go on and on,

  65. if it matters how they live,

  66. if it matters how they represent their company

  67. or organization or whatever,

  68. how much more should it matter

  69. how we as Christians live

  70. and reflect on our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  71. Today and for the next four weeks,

  72. I want us to turn to Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  73. and look at how God calls us to live in this world

  74. as his children.

  75. And I want us to understand he calls us to do this

  76. because it matters.

  77. It matters how we live.

  78. It matters how we represent him,

  79. how we represent the Lord Jesus.

  80. What we're going to do

  81. is we're going to do a study

  82. of the entire chapter of Romans

  83. or the 12th chapter of Romans.

  84. The whole thing is going to be called

  85. Living Like a Christian.

  86. And we're going to break it down into five studies,

  87. possibly six.

  88. Here's the goal.

  89. Today, Living Like a Christian

  90. in Our Relationship with God, Part 1.

  91. We're really just going to look at verse 1

  92. and come back next week and look at verse 2.

  93. Then Living Like a Christian

  94. in Our Understanding of Ourselves,

  95. beginning in verse 3 through verse 8.

  96. And then we'll spend the last two weeks,

  97. possibly three,

  98. Living Like a Christian

  99. in Our Relationships with Others.

  100. Romans 12, verses 9 through 21.

    Romans 12:9–21

  101. Today, I want us to begin by reading Romans 1,

  102. or Romans 12, verses 1 and 2.

    Romans 12:1

  103. And as we read this,

  104. if you've been in church anywhere,

  105. I'm going to guess,

  106. for any length of time,

  107. these two verses are very familiar.

  108. Romans 12, 1 and 2

  109. is one of the most important passages

  110. in the entire Bible.

  111. Certainly one of the most well-known

  112. in the book of Romans.

  113. If you've been a member of this church

  114. for any length of time,

  115. for a few years at least,

  116. as we read this,

  117. if they don't sound familiar,

  118. don't tell me.

  119. Please don't tell me

  120. that you're not familiar

  121. with Romans 12, 1 and 2.

  122. Let's read it.

  123. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers.

  124. It could be translated

  125. brothers and sisters.

  126. It includes both.

  127. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers,

  128. by the mercies of God,

  129. to present your bodies

  130. as a living sacrifice,

  131. holy and acceptable to God,

  132. which is your spiritual worship.

  133. Do not be conformed to this world,

  134. but be transformed

  135. by the renewal of your mind,

  136. that by testing

  137. you may discern

  138. what is the will of God,

  139. what is good

  140. and acceptable

  141. and perfect.

  142. Paul wrote this letter

  143. to the church at Rome.

  144. He wrote this letter

  145. to Christians.

  146. And the first 11 chapters,

  147. he is explaining to them

  148. how all people are sinners

  149. in need of a Savior

  150. and that God graciously provided

  151. the Savior we need

  152. in the person of His Son,

  153. Jesus.

  154. Paul explained in great detail

  155. how salvation is by the grace of God

  156. through faith in Jesus,

  157. through faith alone

  158. in Jesus.

  159. Now,

  160. in chapter 12,

  161. he starts applying

  162. what he's taught.

  163. You could put it this way.

  164. In chapters 1 through 11,

  165. Paul explains a lot

  166. in great detail,

  167. answers questions,

  168. objections even,

  169. to what God has done

  170. for us in Christ

  171. and how we should respond

  172. by repentance and faith.

  173. And it could be

  174. that you get to the end

  175. of chapter 11

  176. and you think about

  177. all he's said

  178. and you ask the question,

  179. so what?

  180. Well,

  181. in chapter 12,

  182. verse 1,

  183. Paul starts answering,

  184. so what?

  185. He explains,

  186. he applies

  187. what he's been teaching.

  188. What he's going to do

  189. is tell us

  190. how we need to respond

  191. to what God

  192. has graciously

  193. and mercifully

  194. done

  195. in our lives.

  196. And he's going to say

  197. that we need to respond

  198. by making a commitment

  199. of our whole lives

  200. to God.

  201. That's how we demonstrate

  202. we're God's children.

  203. That's how we express

  204. our love and appreciation

  205. to God

  206. for what he's done

  207. for us

  208. by making a great

  209. commitment,

  210. a real,

  211. wholehearted commitment.

  212. But I want you

  213. to understand,

  214. that word commitment

  215. is falling on hard times.

  216. We live in a day

  217. where we don't like

  218. to make commitments.

  219. A lot of people

  220. won't make a commitment

  221. to somebody

  222. or something

  223. next week.

  224. commitment.

  225. But commitment

  226. is not

  227. a bad word.

  228. Now sometimes

  229. it's just not

  230. everything

  231. that is cracked up

  232. to be.

  233. For example,

  234. there's a such thing

  235. as a try your hardest

  236. because you've got

  237. to do it

  238. kind of commitment.

  239. That's the kind

  240. of commitment

  241. where

  242. you go to the doctor

  243. and he tells you

  244. you've got

  245. high blood pressure.

  246. Your blood sugar

  247. levels are too high.

  248. And what you've got

  249. to do

  250. in order to avoid

  251. going on medication,

  252. what you've got

  253. to do

  254. maybe to avoid

  255. becoming a diabetic

  256. or having a stroke,

  257. you've got

  258. to lose

  259. 30 pounds.

  260. And so you think

  261. to yourself,

  262. well I don't want

  263. to have a stroke,

  264. I don't want

  265. to be a diabetic,

  266. I don't want

  267. to have to take

  268. medication,

  269. so I'm going

  270. to lose the weight

  271. and I'm going

  272. to make a commitment

  273. but I absolutely

  274. hate the thought

  275. of dieting,

  276. of exercising,

  277. of doing all

  278. I've got to do

  279. to lose that weight.

  280. Yes,

  281. I want to do it,

  282. yes,

  283. I want to make

  284. a commitment

  285. but I'm going

  286. to hate

  287. every single day

  288. that I don't get

  289. to eat what I want

  290. to eat

  291. and every single day

  292. that I have to run

  293. where I don't want

  294. to run,

  295. do what I've got

  296. to do that way.

  297. That is not

  298. the kind of commitment

  299. that God is calling

  300. us to make

  301. in verse 1.

  302. I want you to get

  303. out of your mind

  304. any kind of

  305. coerced,

  306. do your best

  307. even though you

  308. don't want to

  309. kind of commitment.

  310. I want you to look

  311. at what kind

  312. it is.

  313. Number 1,

  314. our commitment

  315. to God

  316. is based on

  317. a loving

  318. relationship

  319. with Him.

  320. The first place

  321. that we begin

  322. as we think

  323. about the commitment

  324. He's calling us

  325. to make,

  326. it is based

  327. on a loving

  328. relationship

  329. with Him.

  330. Look at verse 1,

  331. the first phrase.

  332. I appeal

  333. to you

  334. therefore

  335. brothers

  336. by the mercies

  337. of God.

  338. This is not

  339. really a

  340. command

  341. command.

  342. Paul is

  343. urging,

  344. strongly

  345. encouraging

  346. these people

  347. that he calls

  348. brothers and

  349. sisters.

  350. It's like he's

  351. saying to them,

  352. I'm urging you,

  353. I'm encouraging you.

  354. It's strong.

  355. He's an apostle.

  356. He has the authority

  357. to do that.

  358. It's the Word

  359. of God.

  360. We ought to do it,

  361. but Paul is

  362. making the appeal

  363. because it's

  364. something based

  365. on the mercy

  366. of God,

  367. the mercies

  368. of God.

  369. Look at the word

  370. therefore for a

  371. moment.

  372. That recalls

  373. what Paul has

  374. been describing

  375. verses 1 through

  376. 11,

  377. which can be

  378. summarized

  379. the mercies

  380. of God

  381. or the

  382. merciful acts

  383. of God

  384. in providing

  385. for our

  386. salvation.

  387. Paul is

  388. trying to

  389. motivate us,

  390. trying to

  391. motivate those

  392. people originally

  393. and us today

  394. to commit

  395. ourselves

  396. wholeheartedly

  397. to God

  398. by pointing

  399. out to us

  400. what God

  401. has so

  402. mercifully

  403. and graciously

  404. and lovingly

  405. done for us.

  406. This is

  407. positive

  408. motivation.

  409. Paul's already

  410. pointed out

  411. in this letter,

  412. first 11

  413. chapters,

  414. how God

  415. has,

  416. from His

  417. own initiative,

  418. from His

  419. own love,

  420. from His

  421. own grace,

  422. chose us

  423. to be His

  424. children

  425. through faith

  426. in Jesus.

  427. Paul has

  428. explained how

  429. God has

  430. called us

  431. by His

  432. grace

  433. to enjoy

  434. the privileges

  435. of being

  436. His children,

  437. being able to

  438. call Him

  439. Heavenly Father.

  440. God has

  441. shown us,

  442. or Paul

  443. has written

  444. here about

  445. what God

  446. has done

  447. in offering

  448. us,

  449. giving us

  450. salvation

  451. as a

  452. gift

  453. that we

  454. receive

  455. through

  456. faith in

  457. Jesus.

  458. Paul has

  459. explained

  460. while that

  461. gift is

  462. free to us,

  463. it was very

  464. costly to

  465. Him.

  466. He sent

  467. His Son

  468. into this

  469. world to

  470. actually die

  471. a horrible

  472. death.

  473. on a cross,

  474. but to die

  475. as our

  476. substitute,

  477. suffering the

  478. punishment that

  479. our sins

  480. deserve,

  481. that we

  482. deserve.

  483. God offers

  484. forgiveness,

  485. wiping the

  486. slate clean,

  487. a new start,

  488. a new life.

  489. God offers

  490. eternal life

  491. as a gift

  492. through faith

  493. in His Son,

  494. Jesus.

  495. forgiveness.

  496. Now,

  497. if you

  498. have

  499. received

  500. that gift,

  501. if you

  502. truly know

  503. Christ as

  504. your Lord

  505. and Savior,

  506. I want you

  507. to think

  508. about what

  509. God has

  510. done for

  511. you,

  512. and He

  513. didn't have

  514. to.

  515. He was

  516. under no

  517. obligation.

  518. But I want

  519. you to know

  520. that God

  521. has forgiven

  522. you.

  523. God has,

  524. in His sight,

  525. made you

  526. new.

  527. God has

  528. put His

  529. Spirit in

  530. you.

  531. God now

  532. thinks of

  533. you as

  534. His son

  535. or His

  536. daughter.

  537. You are

  538. His child.

  539. And God

  540. promises to

  541. be with you

  542. and take care

  543. of you every

  544. step of the

  545. way in this

  546. world.

  547. That doesn't

  548. mean life's

  549. going to be

  550. easy by no

  551. means.

  552. But God

  553. promises to

  554. be with us,

  555. to never leave

  556. us nor forsake

  557. us.

  558. sometimes He'll

  559. just have to

  560. carry us

  561. through a

  562. situation.

  563. God promises

  564. not only to be

  565. with us in

  566. this life,

  567. but to bring

  568. us into His

  569. real presence

  570. after death

  571. where we

  572. will enjoy

  573. eternity

  574. in heaven

  575. with Him

  576. and with

  577. all of His

  578. people.

  579. So the idea

  580. is, when Paul

  581. says, I appeal

  582. to you,

  583. therefore,

  584. brothers,

  585. by the

  586. mercies of

  587. God, the

  588. idea is, in

  589. light of God's

  590. great mercy

  591. and grace

  592. and love,

  593. all this,

  594. He is calling

  595. us to

  596. willingly

  597. commit

  598. ourselves to

  599. Him and

  600. live the

  601. kind of life

  602. that will

  603. honor Him,

  604. that will

  605. please Him.

  606. And there's

  607. other things

  608. in Romans that

  609. tell us it'll

  610. be the most

  611. satisfying life

  612. that we could

  613. live as well.

  614. It matters how

  615. we live in this

  616. world.

  617. God really

  618. wants us to

  619. live like

  620. His children,

  621. to have a

  622. right kind of

  623. relationship with

  624. Him.

  625. And to have a

  626. right kind of

  627. relationship with

  628. Him day by

  629. day, it requires

  630. that we commit

  631. ourselves to

  632. Him.

  633. But understand,

  634. He's calling us

  635. to commit

  636. ourselves to

  637. Him because

  638. He's the one

  639. who loves us

  640. more than anyone

  641. could.

  642. He's the one

  643. who's already

  644. done for us

  645. what no one

  646. else could do

  647. and will for

  648. all eternity

  649. do for us.

  650. there is no

  651. greater one

  652. than Almighty

  653. God and His

  654. Son Jesus

  655. Christ who is

  656. for us, who

  657. is with us.

  658. There's no

  659. greater one,

  660. greater thing that

  661. should motivate us

  662. to want to say,

  663. Lord, I am

  664. yours.

  665. I am committed

  666. to you, to

  667. your way, to

  668. your will.

  669. The motivation

  670. should come from

  671. the relationship

  672. we have with

  673. God based on

  674. His mercy.

  675. Number two, our

  676. commitment to God

  677. is to be a

  678. total life

  679. commitment.

  680. God's not

  681. playing around.

  682. It is a

  683. great, a

  684. great urging.

  685. He wants us to

  686. be motivated from

  687. within.

  688. Spirit of God

  689. Himself motivates

  690. us from love

  691. and gratitude.

  692. But God is

  693. calling us to

  694. make, make no

  695. mistake, a

  696. total, 100%

  697. commitment to

  698. Him.

  699. He says, look

  700. at it.

  701. I appeal to you

  702. therefore, brothers,

  703. by the mercies of

  704. God, to present

  705. your bodies as a

  706. living sacrifice,

  707. holy and

  708. acceptable to

  709. God.

  710. Look at the

  711. first phrase,

  712. present your

  713. bodies.

  714. On one hand,

  715. that refers to

  716. everything that

  717. you are.

  718. you, your

  719. life.

  720. But He uses

  721. that word

  722. body for a

  723. purpose.

  724. That literally

  725. means use

  726. your body

  727. in sacrificial

  728. service to the

  729. Lord.

  730. Use your eyes,

  731. use your mouth,

  732. hands, use your

  733. feet, use your

  734. mind to

  735. please God

  736. instead of

  737. pleasing yourself

  738. or fulfilling

  739. your sinful

  740. desires.

  741. Paul talks about

  742. that earlier in

  743. Romans in chapter

  744. 6.

  745. I want you to

  746. look at one

  747. verse where he

  748. sort of explains

  749. this.

  750. He says,

  751. do not offer

  752. any part of

  753. yourself to

  754. sin as an

  755. instrument of

  756. wickedness, but

  757. rather offer

  758. yourselves, some

  759. translations say

  760. your members,

  761. members of your

  762. body, but rather

  763. offer yourselves to

  764. God as those who

  765. have been brought

  766. from death to

  767. life and offer

  768. every part of

  769. yourself to Him as

  770. an instrument of

  771. righteousness.

  772. And I want you to

  773. think about what he's

  774. saying here.

  775. He's calling us to

  776. make a total

  777. commitment of

  778. ourselves, of

  779. our bodies.

  780. God wants us to

  781. commit to using

  782. our mouth to

  783. speak truth, not

  784. lies.

  785. God wants us to

  786. use our mouth to

  787. speak encouraging

  788. words to people,

  789. not put-downs.

  790. God wants us to

  791. use our mouth to

  792. speak words of

  793. the gospel, of

  794. life, of hope to

  795. people, not just

  796. talk about just the

  797. things of this

  798. world.

  799. God wants us to

  800. use our hands in

  801. serving people,

  802. meeting needs,

  803. actually touching

  804. people's lives, not

  805. just taking care of

  806. ourselves, meeting

  807. our own needs.

  808. sacrifice.

  809. This verse

  810. specifically says to

  811. present your bodies

  812. as a living sacrifice.

  813. And when Paul wrote

  814. that, everybody

  815. understood the idea

  816. of animal sacrifice.

  817. Not just Jews, it was

  818. just the way of the

  819. times.

  820. Pagans, everybody

  821. worships, always have,

  822. always will.

  823. And there was animal

  824. sacrifices in the pagan

  825. temples.

  826. In the most extreme

  827. abuses of the system,

  828. there were human

  829. sacrifices offered.

  830. But as Paul wrote

  831. this, there was a

  832. Jewish element in the

  833. church, and for sure

  834. it brought to mind the

  835. animal sacrifices that

  836. were killed, blood

  837. spilt, as an atonement

  838. for their sins.

  839. Problem was, in the

  840. Old Testament, it had to

  841. be done over and over

  842. and over again.

  843. It really was not, it

  844. was God's plan, it was

  845. part of the law, but it

  846. wasn't God's final word.

  847. It wasn't the fulfilled

  848. plan.

  849. If you read in Hebrews

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  850. chapter 8, 9, and 10,

  851. for example, those animal

  852. sacrifices are no longer,

  853. they're obsolete.

  854. Jesus Christ, all those

  855. sacrifices, they actually

  856. pointed to Him.

  857. He is the Lamb of God, who

  858. by His death, by the

  859. shedding of His blood, that

  860. really removed sin, that

  861. really atoned for our

  862. sins, the sins of those

  863. who trust in Him, the

  864. sins of His people.

  865. Well, now, God calls us,

  866. forget the animal

  867. sacrifices, present

  868. yourself, present your

  869. life, present your body as

  870. a living sacrifice.

  871. sacrifice.

  872. And look what He says, how

  873. to do it.

  874. As holy and acceptable to

  875. God.

  876. We're to present ourselves

  877. to God.

  878. The word holy here is

  879. talking about being set

  880. apart.

  881. We're to present ourselves

  882. to God as a living

  883. sacrifice.

  884. We're holy.

  885. We're set apart.

  886. We're not like the world.

  887. We'll get into that next

  888. week.

  889. We're to be God's unique

  890. people.

  891. And as we present

  892. ourselves to God as a

  893. living sacrifice, holy, set

  894. apart, not like everybody

  895. else, it will be

  896. acceptable to Him.

  897. Or some translations say

  898. it'll be pleasing to Him.

  899. That's another positive

  900. motivation.

  901. I want you to think

  902. about this.

  903. There's some people you

  904. know that no matter what

  905. you do, you cannot please

  906. them.

  907. Some of you, you may be

  908. thinking, that's my mama,

  909. that's my daddy.

  910. Some of you may be

  911. thinking, that's my husband,

  912. that's my wife.

  913. Or my boss.

  914. Or someone in my life.

  915. They just cannot be

  916. pleased.

  917. And some people would

  918. have the idea, you can

  919. never please God, but

  920. that's not true.

  921. We can be pleasing to

  922. God.

  923. We can be acceptable to

  924. Him.

  925. In fact, if you want to

  926. do some more reading on

  927. that, 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  928. chapter 4, beginning in

  929. verse 1, talks about

  930. living a life that

  931. pleases God.

  932. In fact, a few years

  933. ago, a couple of years

  934. ago, we did a little

  935. short series on pleasing

  936. God.

  937. I want you to

  938. understand what Paul is

  939. saying here about

  940. committing ourselves to

  941. Him because we love

  942. Him, because we're

  943. appreciative of what

  944. He's done for us,

  945. committing ourselves to

  946. Him wholeheartedly as a

  947. living sacrifice, that

  948. pleases God.

  949. You can leave here this

  950. morning as one in whom

  951. God is pleased.

  952. A smile comes across

  953. His face because you are

  954. trusting in His Son for

  955. your salvation.

  956. That means the penalty

  957. for your sins paid.

  958. That means God credits the

  959. righteousness of Jesus to

  960. you.

  961. And if you're trusting in

  962. Jesus this way, and you

  963. want to express your love

  964. and thanks to God by

  965. committing yourself to

  966. Him 100% as a living

  967. sacrifice, separated from

  968. this world, you will leave

  969. here pleasing God.

  970. Now, this kind of commitment

  971. to God requires that we

  972. have to be intentional in

  973. how we live in this world.

  974. We have to be intentional

  975. about what we do as we do

  976. what we do at home and work

  977. and school and on the ball

  978. field and everywhere else.

  979. We've got to be intentional

  980. about, I am seeking to please

  981. God in the way that I am

  982. committed to Him in just

  983. doing what I've got to do

  984. wherever I am and go in

  985. life.

  986. We've got to be intentional.

  987. Our goal has to be more

  988. than just trying to be good.

  989. Just trying to be good

  990. citizens, good Americans,

  991. morally upright, or even good

  992. church members.

  993. Jerry Bridges, the Christian

  994. author, written a lot of

  995. books on living Christian

  996. life.

  997. Great, great guy.

  998. Lots of help.

  999. He talks about, in one of his

  1000. books, there's a lot of people

1001. who are committed to doing

  1002. good.

1003. They're, what you might call,

  1004. they're committed to moral

  1005. values.

  1006. They're committed to morality.

1007. Or they're committed to the

  1008. church.

  1009. church.

1010. I want you to know that you

  1011. can be an atheist.

1012. And you can be committed to

  1013. doing good.

  1014. There's a lot of people who

1015. don't believe in God, who

1016. don't care about God, and

  1017. they're basically good,

  1018. morally upright people.

1019. What the Scripture is calling

1020. us to do is not be committed

1021. to some vague sense of

1022. goodness and moral values, or

1023. even being committed to the

  1024. church, standing alone.

1025. We're supposed to be committed

1026. to God, to Him, in a

  1027. relationship.

1028. And if we are, we'll be

  1029. committed to His Word.

1030. We'll be committed to the

  1031. moral teachings and truth

1032. that He reveals in His Word.

1033. We'll be committed to His

  1034. church.

1035. But the commitment is really

  1036. to Him.

1037. It's really to the Lord Jesus.

1038. And we just live it out by

  1039. obeying the moral principles.

  1040. By participating in worship

1041. and study and fellowship that

  1042. we do in church.

1043. Now this commitment to honor

  1044. God and please Him.

1045. You know this kind of

  1046. devotion cannot be forced.

  1047. You can't just decide,

1048. I'm just going to do the best

1049. I can and be committed to God

  1050. this way.

  1051. You can't make yourself

1052. have this inner love and

  1053. gratitude, appreciation to God

1054. for what He has done for you

  1055. and saving you.

  1056. You can't do it.

1057. This will only come from a

1058. heart that has been changed,

  1059. from a person who's been

1060. changed by the Spirit of God.

1061. This can only happen in the

1062. life of a real Christian.

1063. This is one way to tell if you

1064. have a real relationship with

  1065. God.

1066. If you think to yourself,

  1067. I don't really have a clue

  1068. what you're talking about

  1069. this morning.

1070. This idea of having a

  1071. relationship with God,

  1072. having this inward motivation

1073. to love Him and show thanks

1074. to Him because of what He's

  1075. done for me.

  1076. If you say,

  1077. I don't understand that,

1078. I want you to understand,

  1079. I just don't see that you

  1080. could be a Christian

  1081. possibly.

  1082. Because if you're a Christian,

1083. the Spirit of God lives

  1084. within you.

  1085. If you're a Christian,

1086. you understand what God has

1087. done for you in sending

  1088. Jesus.

  1089. You understand the

  1090. forgiveness.

  1091. You understand the freedom.

  1092. You understand His love.

  1093. You've experienced it.

  1094. And there's something within

1095. you that causes you to want

1096. to express your love back

1097. and show Him your gratitude

1098. by the way that you live.

1099. Now, you don't always do

1100. that and no one does.

1101. We still have this sinful

1102. nature that we have to

  1103. battle.

1104. Some days I just want to

1105. please me more than God.

  1106. You know that.

1107. But you also know if the

1108. Spirit of God lives within

1109. you, that it's He who gives

1110. us the desire, the ability

1111. to want to be committed to

1112. our Heavenly Father for these

  1113. right reasons.

1114. Let's look at one more

  1115. thing.

1116. Our commitment to God makes

  1117. sense.

1118. If we are His children.

1119. This whole, this call to

  1120. wholehearted commitment to

  1121. God is not something

  1122. fanatical, unrealistic that

1123. Paul just made up because

1124. he was a fanatical, unreal

  1125. kind of guy.

  1126. No.

  1127. It makes sense.

1128. Look at the last phrase

  1129. here.

1130. He says, which is your

  1131. spiritual worship.

  1132. worship.

1133. Or, in the footnote of the

1134. ESV, which I'm reading from,

1135. it says, it is your rational

  1136. service.

  1137. New American Standard says,

1138. which is your spiritual service

  1139. of worship.

1140. The Net Bible, the New English

1141. translation, says, which is your

  1142. reasonable service.

  1143. service.

1144. What Paul is saying here that

1145. this call to commit yourself to

1146. God as a living sacrifice

  1147. wholeheartedly, because God's

1148. shown His mercy to you and you

1149. love Him and you just want to do

1150. this because you know it will

  1151. please Him.

1152. Paul is saying that this is

  1153. reasonable service.

  1154. This is rational worship.

1155. It just makes sense if you know

1156. who God is and what He's done.

  1157. It's not fanatical.

1158. It's not over the top.

1159. It's not crazy at all.

1160. Now, I want you to think with me.

  1161. This call to commitment.

1162. It's a call to, it says here,

1163. to worship God, which is your

1164. spiritual worship, which is your

  1165. reasonable service, service of

1166. worship, whatever you want to say.

1167. I want you to look with me at what

  1168. Doug Moo, New Testament

1169. commentator, how he explains this

1170. idea of our commitment to God

1171. being an act of worship or

  1172. worshipful service.

  1173. Look at it.

1174. He says, worship is the way we

1175. live, not what we do on Sunday

  1176. morning.

  1177. Now, he goes on.

1178. I'm not going to do it because we

  1179. don't have time.

1180. He talks about what we do on Sunday

1181. morning is corporate worship and it

  1182. matters how we worship.

  1183. So he's not discounting God's people

  1184. gathering for worship.

  1185. He's not discounting us having a

1186. devotional life where we worship God

  1187. and praise Him.

  1188. Look at it.

1189. Worship in this context is the way we

1190. live, not what we do on Sunday

  1191. morning.

1192. We worship God, says Paul, by

  1193. giving ourselves in sacrificial

  1194. service to our Lord.

1195. We are to serve Him every day, every

  1196. hour, every minute.

1197. Paul deliberately uses the word

1198. body to describe what we are to

  1199. offer to God.

  1200. He gives some examples.

  1201. Look at it.

1202. As we eat our food, we worship God

1203. by thanking Him for what He has

1204. given us, honoring Him with our

1205. conversation and providing for the

1206. bodies He has given us.

1207. As we sweat on the treadmill, we

1208. worship God by seeking to be good

1209. stewards of the body He has given

  1210. us.

1211. This next one is for me, but I know

1212. it's for some of you as well.

1213. As we seek to avoid driving with the

  1214. same egotistical aggressiveness as

1215. others, we worship God by displaying

1216. the fruit of His Spirit.

1217. We do our work to the best of our

1218. ability, worshiping God by giving our

  1219. best to our employers.

1220. All of our life is to be a

1221. continuous worship of the God who

  1222. created and redeemed us.

1223. The commitment that God calls us to

1224. make in order to live like His

1225. children in this world is a total

  1226. commitment.

1227. Touches every aspect of our lives

  1228. every day.

1229. And no one can force you or

1230. manipulate you to make this kind of

  1231. wholehearted, willing commitment.

1232. This kind of commitment calls on you

  1233. to look within.

1234. Think about your relationship with

1235. God, what He's done for you.

1236. Think about how much He loves you and

1237. has shown His mercy to you.

1238. And when you do, that's when you'll

1239. make that kind of commitment.

1240. So I just want to ask you here as we

1241. wind down, is this the kind of

1242. relationship you have with God?

1243. If it is, you just thank Him.

1244. If you understand fully what I'm

1245. talking about this morning and

1246. there's just that within you that

1247. understands God has been so

1248. merciful and loving and kind and

1249. gracious to you and you appreciate

1250. it, you know that your salvation,

1251. your trust in Jesus is because of

1252. what God's done in you to enable

1253. you to understand that and believe

1254. that and because of what God's done

1255. to forgive you and make you His

1256. child and always be with you, you do

1257. love Him and you want to be committed

  1258. to Him.

1259. You want to serve Him.

1260. You know you don't do it perfectly

  1261. by any means.

1262. But if you understand this, this is

1263. your heartfelt desire, you just thank

1264. Him for what He's done, what He's

  1265. doing and keep on.

1266. If you understand what I'm talking

1267. about this morning and that

1268. commitment used to be true about you

1269. but you've let other things or

1270. people or something get in the way,

1271. your priorities aren't what they

  1272. used to be.

1273. Your level of commitment has just

1274. fallen off drastically to what it

  1275. used to be.

1276. What you know right now, you really

1277. want it to be because you know God

  1278. wants it to rise.

1279. I want you to search your life.

1280. If there's sin, confess it.

  1281. Repent of it.

1282. If there's some wrong priorities, even

  1283. wrong relationships, abandon them.

1284. Ask God to give you the wisdom to know how

1285. you need to rearrange your life and make

1286. the commitment that by His grace, you're

1287. going to seek to show Him your love and

  1288. your gratitude.

1289. By the way, you are committed to being a

1290. living sacrifice in every aspect of your

  1291. life every day.

1292. Now, if none of this is true about you but you

1293. want it to be, humble yourself before God and

  1294. admit that it's not.

1295. Even if you're a church member, admit that

  1296. it's not.

1297. Admit your sin, your failure, your rebellion,

  1298. whatever it is.

  1299. Change your mind.

1300. Turn from this way of life, this sinful way of

  1301. life.

1302. Put your trust in Jesus.

1303. Call upon Him to save you.

1304. Surrender your life to Him as Lord.

1305. If you do that, the Scripture says,

1306. whoever calls on the name of the Lord will

  1307. be saved.

1308. God will change you and He will so work in

1309. you that you will want to be committed because

1310. of the love you have for Him, His grace and

  1311. mercy.

1312. It really does matter how we live as God's

  1313. children.

1314. We represent our Heavenly Father.

1315. We represent the Lord Jesus Christ.

1316. If you want to live a life that pleases Him,

1317. make sure you leave here today wholeheartedly

1318. committed to Him now because you love Him and you

  1319. want to please Him.

1320. make that kind of commitment.

1321. Would you pray with me?

  1322. Dear God,

1323. help us to see how we should respond to You,

1324. to what You've said to us this morning about how we live

  1325. and the necessity of

1326. a commitment from our heart

1327. to You out of love

1328. for Your great mercy and grace.

  1329. show us,

  1330. show us,

  1331. help us

1332. to make the kind of commitment You want us to make.

1333. And in an attitude of prayer,

  1334. do that.

1335. If I could pray with you,

1336. I'm happy to do that here at the front.

1337. But let's just listen to the Lord

1338. and obey Him as He speaks to us

1339. from His Word and Spirit this morning.

  1340. Thank you.
