  1. When you hear the word commitment, what comes to your mind?

  2. It may depend upon the situation.

  3. Some of you athletes in here, we have athletes of various kinds in this room right now.

  4. You might describe your commitment to your sport or your team by saying things like,

  5. you've got to go to practice every day.

  6. You've got to give 100% effort every time you step on the field.

  7. You've got to stay positive.

  8. And especially in today's sports world, you might say or should say, don't get into trouble off the field.

  9. We've got a lot of married men in this room.

  10. If I ask you to describe commitment, you might say something like,

  11. I try to tell her and show her that I love her every day.

  12. You might describe commitment in terms of,

  13. I am committed to always being faithful in thought as well as action.

  14. You might even say that your commitment involves,

  15. I will only speak nice things about her parents.

  16. Or you might even tell her that you like her casseroles.

  17. Now strike that last one.

  18. That's just going too far.

  19. Let's just don't put that one in there.

  20. Now as a Christian,

  21. how would you describe what it means to be committed to God?

  22. How would you describe, how would you summarize what it means for you to be committed to Jesus Christ

  23. as the Savior and Lord of your life?

  24. Well, I'm going to help you here.

  25. I think one of the best descriptions of what it means to be committed to our Lord

  26. is found in Romans chapter 12, verses 1 and 2.

    Romans 12:1

  27. I want to put it on the screen now, but I hope you'll open your Bibles to this

  28. because we're going to be looking at both 1 and 2 today, really for the entire time.

  29. We're going to look at only maybe a couple of other Scripture verses.

  30. So turn in your Bible to Romans chapter 12, verses 1 and 2.

    Romans 12:1

  31. But here, look at it now on the screen.

  32. One of the best explanations of what it means to be committed to God.

  33. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God,

  34. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  35. holy and acceptable to God,

  36. which is your spiritual worship.

  37. Do not be conformed to this world,

  38. but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,

  39. that by testing you may discern what is the will of God,

  40. what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  41. We looked at these verses last week

  42. as we started a new series of studies from Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  43. The goal is we're going to go through the book of Romans chapter 12 only now

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  44. under the heading, Living Like a Christian.

  45. Last week and today, we're talking about living like a Christian

  46. in our relationship with God.

  47. Next week, we're going to talk about living or thinking like a Christian

  48. in our understanding of ourselves.

  49. And then we'll move on throughout the rest of the chapter

  50. and think about what it means to live like a Christian

  51. as we relate to other people.

  52. Now, in that message last week,

  53. we began looking at what it means to live like a Christian

  54. in relationship with God

  55. and found that the first requirement

  56. is to make a wholehearted commitment to God.

  57. Not just a wholehearted commitment to doing good

  58. or to going to church or doing something like that,

  59. but the focus was commitment to God himself,

  60. which includes commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ as well.

  61. I want us to go back to these verses

  62. and look more closely now

  63. at how God wants us to live in a relationship with him

  64. as his children.

  65. Number one is a review from last week.

  66. We start by making a wholehearted commitment to God.

  67. If you are serious about wanting to live

  68. like a Christian in this world,

  69. I mean, if you're serious about who you are as a child of God

  70. and you really want to live

  71. and let everybody see,

  72. I'm a true believer,

  73. I'm a true follower of Jesus,

  74. then you must, as it says there,

  75. make a wholehearted commitment to God.

  76. You'll never live that kind of life

  77. without a total wholehearted commitment.

  78. Look at verse one, the first phrase.

  79. You can see what he's talking about.

  80. He says,

  81. I appeal to you therefore, brothers,

  82. by the mercies of God.

  83. The word therefore recalls

  84. what he's been talking about up to this point.

  85. He summarizes all that he's been talking about

  86. as God's merciful actions toward us

  87. in sending his son into this world

  88. to die on a cross and pay the penalty for our sins,

  89. something we did not deserve.

  90. See, when God shows us mercy,

  91. he's showing us, granting to us

  92. that which we do not deserve.

  93. And that is salvation, forgiveness of sin,

  94. being made right with him through his son, Jesus.

  95. Now, we also saw last week

  96. that wholehearted commitment

  97. requires a total life commitment.

  98. Notice the next phrase.

  99. Present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  100. holy and acceptable to God.

  101. God calls us to give ourselves

  102. completely and exclusively to him,

  103. who we are.

  104. I mean, our mouth, the way we speak,

  105. our hands, what we do,

  106. our feet, where we go.

  107. You can't compartmentalize your Christian faith

  108. if you're a Christian.

  109. You can't be a Christian on Sunday

  110. or around certain people

  111. and then act a different way when you go to work,

  112. the way you do your job,

  113. or around your friends.

  114. Real heartfelt commitment

  115. is whole life commitment.

  116. He tells us it is a holy sacrifice.

  117. It means we're set apart.

  118. We're consciously making this commitment,

  119. setting ourselves apart.

  120. And this kind of commitment

  121. is acceptable or pleasing to God.

  122. You know, we talked about last week,

  123. and for the benefit of those

  124. who were not here last week,

  125. sometimes when you think about

  126. making a commitment,

  127. or at least some people,

  128. they don't like that word.

  129. Because to them,

  130. commitment means I've got to do something

  131. I don't really want to do

  132. to achieve the results

  133. that I really want,

  134. like maybe losing weight,

  135. especially for health reasons.

  136. Well, we're not talking about

  137. a grit your teeth and bear it

  138. kind of commitment here.

  139. We're talking about a commitment

  140. that is based on

  141. having a real, loving relationship with God.

  142. He has shown us His mercy.

  143. We're talking about a commitment.

  144. Because of that,

  145. we just give Him our lives.

  146. We don't hold anything back.

  147. That kind of commitment

  148. pleases God.

  149. And so again,

  150. the motivation for making

  151. this kind of commitment,

  152. this wholehearted commitment,

  153. it's all positive.

  154. Do it because of what God's done for you.

  155. But do it,

  156. or when you do it,

  157. that will please God.

  158. He will be pleased

  159. with that kind of commitment in you.

  160. One other thing is found in verse 1

  161. about wholehearted commitment.

  162. It makes sense.

  163. It just makes sense.

  164. Look at the last phrase,

  165. which is your spiritual worship,

  166. or some translations will say

  167. it's your rational service.

  168. Or some translations say

  169. it's your reasonable service of worship.

  170. It makes sense

  171. to serve God this way.

  172. It makes sense to worship God

  173. as a way of life this way.

  174. This last phrase drives home

  175. the point of the entire verse.

  176. Look at it.

  177. Summarize it one more time.

  178. In light of God's mercy,

  179. in light of God's grace and love as well,

  180. it is clearly reasonable and rational

  181. for us to make a wholehearted,

  182. total life commitment

  183. to serve and worship

  184. our Heavenly Father.

  185. Now,

  186. living like a Christian

  187. in our relationship with God,

  188. that's how it begins.

  189. But if it's going to really grow

  190. and mature and develop,

  191. if it's going to make progress,

  192. we've got certain things we've got to do.

  193. Number two,

  194. we make progress

  195. by consistently choosing

  196. to adopt the worldview of God

  197. and reject all others.

  198. That's what he's talking about

  199. in verse 2,

  200. especially the first part.

  201. Look at it with me.

  202. Paul is contrasting two ways to live.

  203. Verse 2 says,

  204. Do not be conformed to this world,

  205. but be transformed

  206. by the renewal of your mind.

  207. Two ways

  208. you can conform to the pattern of the world.

  209. You can be like the world.

  210. You can adopt the world's mindset,

  211. philosophy,

  212. values.

  213. Or,

  214. you can look to God

  215. and cooperate with Him

  216. as He transforms you,

  217. as He renews your mind,

  218. makes you different

  219. from the way you think

  220. all the way out

  221. into the way that you live.

  222. Paul is pointing out here

  223. to make progress

  224. in living like a Christian.

  225. We've got two choices

  226. to make every day.

  227. We've got two things

  228. we need to do.

  229. One is negative.

  230. Do not be conformed to the world.

  231. But the other one is positive.

  232. Be transformed

  233. by the renewal of your mind.

  234. Let's look now

  235. at what each involves.

  236. First,

  237. the negative one.

  238. We must make a consistent effort

  239. to not allow the world

  240. to shape us.

  241. We must make a consistent effort

  242. to not allow the world

  243. to shape us.

  244. He says it.

  245. Do not be conformed

  246. to this world.

  247. Or,

  248. probably the most well-known

  249. paraphrase of this phrase

  250. comes from the Phillips

  251. translation of the New Testament.

  252. It says,

  253. Do not be conformed

  254. to this world.

  255. It says,

  256. Don't let the world

  257. squeeze you into its mold.

  258. Don't let the world

  259. squeeze you

  260. into its mold.

  261. Another way to say that.

  262. Don't let the world

  263. pressure you

  264. into adopting

  265. its worldview.

  266. Everybody has a worldview.

  267. It's the way

  268. that you look at life.

  269. Your worldview

  270. is the lens

  271. or the filter

  272. through which you look at life.

  273. I'm looking at life

  274. right now

  275. through these glasses

  276. that make some of you

  277. look clearer.

  278. Could be good.

  279. Could not be.

  280. It certainly makes

  281. what I'm trying to read

  282. look clearer.

  283. If you,

  284. some of you,

  285. when you walk out the door,

  286. you're going to put on sunglasses.

  287. That's going to,

  288. it's got a certain tint to it.

  289. That's going to affect

  290. how you look at life

  291. literally.

  292. Our worldview

  293. is the lens

  294. or the filter

  295. through which we

  296. look at life.

  297. It affects what we believe.

  298. And what we believe

  299. determines

  300. how we live.

  301. When Paul says

  302. do not be conformed

  303. to this world,

  304. he's saying

  305. don't look at life

  306. from the perspective

  307. of people

  308. who don't care about God.

  309. You know,

  310. the word world

  311. is used in different ways

  312. in the New Testament.

  313. The word world

  314. sometimes talks about

  315. this big old world

  316. we live in.

  317. The world revolves around

  318. the sun.

  319. Sometimes the scripture

  320. uses the world

  321. in a negative way.

  322. He uses it in terms of

  323. this age

  324. as opposed

  325. to the age to come.

  326. Temporal things.

  327. Just a temporary way

  328. of looking at life

  329. versus an eternal way

  330. of looking at life.

  331. But the world also,

  332. here's what we need

  333. to think about now.

  334. When Paul uses the world

  335. like he's using it here,

  336. he's describing

  337. a way of looking at life

  338. that leaves God out.

  339. He's talking about

  340. a way of life

  341. that either hates God

  342. or doesn't care about God.

  343. And both come out

  344. to the same thing.

  345. They're ignoring God.

  346. They're leaving Him out.

  347. They're leaving His ways,

  348. His will,

  349. His truth

  350. out of their thinking

  351. and as a result

  352. out of their living.

  353. Paul tells us

  354. to not be conformed.

  355. Don't let the world

  356. teach you

  357. to look at life this way.

  358. Let me give you an example.

  359. Go home

  360. and turn on the TV today.

  361. Go home

  362. and turn on the TV

  363. to any of your favorite shows,

  364. any of my favorite shows.

  365. And nine times out of ten,

  366. God will never be mentioned.

  367. No individual,

  368. no family,

  369. no group

  370. will ever mention

  371. mention God

  372. in any kind of real,

  373. personal,

  374. believing kind of way.

  375. See, that's what the world

  376. has done.

  377. Some of the good shows,

  378. your favorite shows,

  379. nothing immoral,

  380. no trashy language.

  381. It's just all about life

  382. as we see it

  383. and feel it

  384. and taste it.

  385. And it's as if

  386. God does not exist

  387. in that world

  388. of your show.

  389. And that's the way

  390. many people live life today.

  391. It's as if

  392. there was no God.

  393. A lot of people

  394. live today

  395. as practical atheists.

  396. Now,

  397. this world mindset,

  398. this world view

  399. that leaves God out

  400. says that we can choose

  401. what we want to believe

  402. and how we want to live

  403. just like you can choose

  404. the food

  405. that you want

  406. as you go through

  407. the cafeteria line.

  408. This world says

  409. you pick and choose

  410. because there's no real

  411. ultimate value.

  412. There's no absolute truth.

  413. The world tells us today

  414. there's no such thing

  415. as something being

  416. always right

  417. or always wrong.

  418. It's all relative.

  419. The world gives you

  420. the freedom.

  421. This world view,

  422. this mindset

  423. that we're talking about

  424. says you have the freedom

  425. to decide

  426. what you want to believe

  427. about God,

  428. about Jesus,

  429. about heaven and hell,

  430. about ethical issues

  431. like abortion,

  432. homosexuality,

  433. about marriage,

  434. about parenting.

  435. See,

  436. the world's mindset,

  437. this world system,

  438. this way of looking at life

  439. says that you

  440. are to be the final judge

  441. for what you believe

  442. and how you live.

  443. It's up to you

  444. because God is not,

  445. He's either not in the picture

  446. at all according

  447. to the way they think

  448. or God's got it all wrong.

  449. We've got to be hostile.

  450. We've got to reject

  451. the teachings of His Word.

  452. Now this world view

  453. that I'm talking about

  454. is how most people

  455. in our country today think.

  456. And unfortunately,

  457. that means there's a lot

  458. of church members

  459. think that same way.

  460. World Magazine

  461. pointed this out

  462. with a quote

  463. that they said

  464. was typical

  465. of how most people

  466. think today

  467. just in general

  468. in our country.

  469. Look at the quote.

  470. Sometimes my personal beliefs

  471. contradict those

  472. taught by the church.

  473. I make my decisions

  474. based on what I feel

  475. is right.

  476. A lot of people

  477. in this world today,

  478. in this country today,

  479. my personal beliefs

  480. contradict those

  481. taught by the church

  482. and hopefully

  483. those taught by the church

  484. are found in Scripture.

  485. We're going to hope

  486. that's what it is.

  487. But I make my decisions

  488. based on what I feel

  489. is right.

  490. What about you?

  491. Could that be something

  492. you think

  493. never would say

  494. but as you actually

  495. live your life

  496. in your home

  497. with your family members

  498. as you carry out

  499. the role

  500. that you have

  501. as a husband

  502. or wife

  503. or child

  504. or parent

  505. when it comes

  506. to making hard

  507. decisions

  508. in relationships

  509. with people

  510. when it comes

  511. to making hard choices?

  512. What prevails?

  513. What you've been taught

  514. as being the actual

  515. Word of God

  516. because it's clear

  517. black and white

  518. or what you prefer?

  519. Your personal opinion?

  520. You know,

  521. what this guy says,

  522. that's an example

  523. of someone

  524. who has adopted

  525. the worldview

  526. of the world.

  527. That's an example

  528. of someone

  529. who's become

  530. a friend

  531. of the world

  532. and the book

  533. of James

  534. in the New Testament.

  535. It warns us

  536. that's a scary,

  537. dangerous place to be.

  538. I want you to look

  539. at what it says.

  540. James is writing

  541. to church members.

  542. James is writing

  543. to professing Christians.

  544. And evidently

  545. he has heard

  546. that some of them

  547. are living more like

  548. people of the world,

  549. people who don't know God,

  550. than they are people

  551. who are followers

  552. of Jesus.

  553. And here's what

  554. he says to them.

  555. You adulterous people.

  556. He considers

  557. their being unfaithful

  558. to God

  559. as spiritual adultery.

  560. You adulterous people.

  561. Do you not know

  562. that friendship

  563. with the world

  564. is enmity?

  565. It's hostility

  566. with God.

  567. Therefore,

  568. whoever wishes

  569. to be a friend

  570. of the world

  571. makes himself

  572. an enemy of God.

  573. It can't be any clearer

  574. than that,

  575. can it?

  576. We cannot,

  577. you cannot be

  578. a friend of the world,

  579. a man of the world,

  580. a woman of the world,

  581. and be a friend

  582. or woman

  583. or man of God.

  584. They are polar opposites.

  585. You may want to be both,

  586. but you can't be both.

  587. James says,

  588. Jesus talked about

  589. the same thing.

  590. We can only be

  591. a friend of God

  592. if we reject

  593. the influence

  594. of the world

  595. that opposes God.

  596. So this is the first choice

  597. that we're called

  598. to make every day

  599. if we're serious

  600. about living

  601. the Christian life.

  602. Now I'm talking to you,

  603. if you're serious

  604. about living

  605. the Christian life,

  606. if you're in elementary school,

  607. middle school,

  608. high school,

  609. college,

  610. if you're a young adult,

  611. middle adult,

  612. or an old adult

  613. like Grace out there,

  614. you've got to make

  615. this choice

  616. every day.

  617. I am not,

  618. with the help

  619. that God gives me,

  620. I am not

  621. going to allow

  622. the world

  623. to squeeze me

  624. into its mold.

  625. But there's another choice.

  626. Equally,

  627. we've got to choose

  628. every day,

  629. and that is

  630. we must make

  631. a consistent effort

  632. to allow God

  633. to shape us.

  634. Look at the phrase.

  635. Next phrase,

  636. be transformed

  637. by the renewal

  638. of your mind.

  639. Transform means

  640. to be changed

  641. into another form.

  642. How many people

  643. in here

  644. have played

  645. with transformers

  646. at some point

  647. in your life?

  648. Lots of people.

  649. You know what it's like

  650. to be transformed

  651. from maybe a car

  652. to an action figure.

  653. You know what it's like.

  654. You've studied

  655. about how a caterpillar

  656. turns into a butterfly.

  657. Transformation.

  658. Notice that it says

  659. be transformed.

  660. That means

  661. that this transformation

  662. is something

  663. that's got to be done

  664. to us.

  665. What it's doing

  666. is referring

  667. to the way

  668. God works

  669. in the life

  670. of every person

  671. who is His child.

  672. God works

  673. through His Spirit

  674. to change us

  675. gradually

  676. throughout our life

  677. here on earth

  678. once we become

  679. a Christian.

  680. I mean,

  681. God puts His Spirit

  682. in us.

  683. He works

  684. to shape

  685. and mold

  686. our character

  687. to be that

  688. like Jesus's.

  689. What we've got

  690. to do

  691. to be transformed

  692. like this,

  693. we've got to learn

  694. to be sensitive

  695. to the Holy Spirit's

  696. presence.

  697. He lives within us.

  698. The Spirit of Christ,

  699. the Spirit of God.

  700. We need to be sensitive

  701. to His presence

  702. and we need to learn

  703. to be

  704. obedient

  705. to His leadership.

  706. For an example,

  707. you're a Christian.

  708. You're serious

  709. about living

  710. the Christian life.

  711. The Spirit of God

  712. prompts you

  713. to say

  714. an encouraging

  715. word

  716. to somebody

  717. that you're in class

  718. with

  719. or that you work

  720. with.

  721. You don't know

  722. what's going on

  723. in their life,

  724. but you know

  725. God is prompting

  726. you to do that.

  727. Well,

  728. to be obedient

  729. to Him,

  730. you need to do that.

  731. You need to offer

  732. that word

  733. of encouragement.

  734. You need to be seen

  735. as that encouraging

  736. Christian who's there

  737. to make a difference,

  738. a positive difference

  739. in someone's life

  740. like that.

  741. The Holy Spirit

  742. will convict us

  743. along the same line

  744. of talking.

  745. Haven't you

  746. as a Christian

  747. felt you wanted

  748. to say something

  749. negative about somebody?

  750. You just wanted

  751. to blast them.

  752. You just wanted

  753. to make fun of them.

  754. Not to their face.

  755. You just wanted

  756. to talk about them

  757. at home

  758. or to your friend.

  759. But before you

  760. got it out of your mouth,

  761. the Holy Spirit

  762. convicted you

  763. and sort of like

  764. saying,

  765. don't say it.

  766. Don't let it come out.

  767. And you've got

  768. to make a choice.

  769. Are you going

  770. to be obedient

  771. to His leadership?

  772. Because gossip

  773. and slander,

  774. that's contrary

  775. to God's word,

  776. isn't it?

  777. We've got to be

  778. sensitive to His presence

  779. and obedient

  780. to His leadership,

  781. submissive to His power.

  782. We're dependent

  783. upon Him.

  784. We can't do this

  785. on our own.

  786. We can't change ourselves.

  787. He can change us.

  788. But we've got to

  789. cooperate with Him

  790. and it'll be

  791. a lifelong process.

  792. The next phrase

  793. in verse 2

  794. tells us how

  795. this transformation

  796. takes place.

  797. By the renewal

  798. of your mind.

  799. The primary battleground

  800. in what all

  801. we're talking about.

  802. The primary battleground

  803. in spiritual warfare,

  804. we'll call it,

  805. is in our minds.

  806. We need to be careful

  807. of what we allow

  808. to enter into our minds.

  809. Now,

  810. what we're talking about here

  811. is what we dwell on.

  812. We're supposed

  813. to live in the world.

  814. We're supposed to,

  815. as Christians,

  816. be in this world,

  817. this world system

  818. that leaves God out,

  819. that hates God.

  820. We're supposed

  821. to be out here

  822. not allowing the world

  823. to influence us.

  824. We're supposed

  825. to be influencers,

  826. influencing the world,

  827. influencing people.

  828. Jesus said we're

  829. to be salt and light.

  830. And as we're out

  831. in the world,

  832. as we interact

  833. with people,

  834. as we do a lot

  835. of different things,

  836. all kinds of thoughts

  837. come into our mind.

  838. As we read,

  839. as we observe,

  840. as we study,

  841. as we do what all,

  842. all kinds of thoughts

  843. come into our mind

  844. and you can't help that.

  845. If in the course

  846. of doing what you need

  847. to do to live your life

  848. as a faithful Christian,

  849. things come into your mind,

  850. don't worry about that.

  851. We're talking about

  852. what you dwell on,

  853. what you sort of

  854. mull over in your mind,

  855. what you think about.

  856. Because what we think

  857. is what determines

  858. what we do.

  859. That's why we've got

  860. to guard against

  861. what comes to our minds.

  862. we've got to learn

  863. to think like a Christian.

  864. We've got to learn

  865. to think

  866. like God wants us

  867. to think

  868. as revealed

  869. in His Word.

  870. How discerning

  871. are you about what

  872. you are allowing

  873. to enter your mind

  874. that you dwell on,

  875. that you think about,

  876. that really is having

  877. an effect on

  878. what you think

  879. and how you live?

  880. How discerning are you

  881. if you have children

  882. at home?

  883. How discerning are you

  884. of what you allow

  885. your children

  886. to be exposed to?

  887. TV, movies,

  888. internet,

  889. music,

  890. whatever.

  891. What are you doing

  892. to try to filter out

  893. as best you can

  894. the garbage from this world

  895. from your mind

  896. and from the minds

  897. of your children?

  898. This is part of

  899. our commitment to God.

  900. Don't be conformed

  901. to the world.

  902. This is one way.

  903. Be transformed

  904. by the renewing

  905. of our mind.

  906. If we're going

  907. to be able to resist

  908. the pressure

  909. to conform,

  910. if we're going

  911. to resist

  912. the influences

  913. of this world,

  914. we've got to go

  915. on the offensive.

  916. We've got to

  917. fill our minds

  918. with the kinds

  919. of things

  920. the Holy Spirit

  921. can use

  922. to renew us,

  923. to transform

  924. our thinking.

  925. And the place

  926. begins with

  927. the truth

  928. of God's Word.

  929. You know that.

  930. We cannot,

  931. no matter what

  932. passage of Scripture

  933. you come to,

  934. when it comes

  935. to application,

  936. the final word is

  937. if we're serious

  938. about living

  939. the Christian life

  940. in this world,

  941. we have got to be

  942. people who know

  943. the Word of God.

  944. We've got to know

  945. how God thinks,

  946. how God feels,

  947. how God has acted

  948. and promises to act.

  949. We've got to know

  950. how we can live

  951. our lives

  952. in a way

  953. that pleases Him

  954. and the way

  955. that will serve

  956. His purpose

  957. for why we are

  958. here in this world.

  959. We need to learn

  960. to read the Bible

  961. just so we understand

  962. God's mind,

  963. God's heart,

  964. God's ways

  965. so that that can

  966. become our mind

  967. and our heart

  968. and our ways.

  969. And then as we

  970. come to know

  971. God's Word,

  972. we need to filter

  973. everything that comes

  974. into our minds

  975. with that truth.

  976. Everything that comes

  977. into our minds,

  978. is, you know,

  979. how should I go

  980. about being

  981. a committed

  982. husband,

  983. a committed wife?

  984. What does the

  985. Scripture say?

  986. Well, it has

  987. very specific things

  988. in Ephesians 5

  989. and Colossians 3,

  990. 1 Peter 3.

  991. There's a lot of

  992. just general

  993. characteristics

  994. of what it means

  995. to be a Christian

  996. and live and interact

  997. with people

  998. in the right kind of way.

  999. Look just for an example,

  1000. verse 9,

  1001. and we're here

  1002. in Romans chapter 12,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  1003. let love be genuine.

  1004. Our love for people

  1005. needs to be genuine.

1006. We don't need to be

  1007. phony and fake,

  1008. put up fronts.

  1009. We need to learn

  1010. to filter everything

1011. that comes into our mind

  1012. with the truth

  1013. of God's Word,

  1014. every temptation,

  1015. every idle thought.

  1016. That's how we develop

  1017. a Christian worldview.

  1018. Now,

  1019. let's look at

  1020. one more thing,

  1021. the benefits

  1022. of living

  1023. like a committed

  1024. Christian

  1025. in our relationship

  1026. with God.

  1027. That's the last part

  1028. of verse 2.

  1029. We are rewarded

  1030. with a positive experience

  1031. and desirable benefits

  1032. of doing God's will.

  1033. If we are faithful

  1034. to the Lord,

  1035. committed to Him

  1036. like we've been

  1037. talking about,

1038. we're going to be rewarded

  1039. with positive experiences

  1040. and desirable benefits

  1041. of doing God's will.

  1042. Look at verse 2,

  1043. the last part.

  1044. That by testing,

  1045. you may discern

1046. what is the will of God,

  1047. what is good

  1048. and acceptable

  1049. and perfect.

1050. As we obey God's call

  1051. to be totally committed,

  1052. as we cooperate

1053. with the Spirit of God

  1054. who works in us,

  1055. we're going to find

1056. that we get a lot of joy

  1057. and pleasure

  1058. from doing God's will.

  1059. It's going to mean

  1060. something to us.

  1061. We're going to find

  1062. satisfaction in living

  1063. God's way

  1064. as God's people

1065. if we do the kind

  1066. of things Paul

  1067. is talking about here,

1068. cooperating with the Holy Spirit

  1069. who lives within us.

  1070. Paul is talking about,

  1071. not talking about

  1072. finding God's will

  1073. about such things as,

  1074. such things as,

  1075. who should I marry?

  1076. Where should I work?

  1077. That's not what he's

  1078. talking about.

  1079. He's talking about

  1080. God's desired will

1081. which He reveals to us

  1082. in His Word.

  1083. The Bible reveals

  1084. God's will

  1085. in a general way

  1086. in terms of

  1087. what we should believe

1088. and how we should live.

  1089. We test God's will.

1090. That's what it says there

  1091. in the latter part

  1092. of verse 2.

  1093. That by testing,

  1094. you may discern

1095. what is the will of God.

  1096. We test God's will

  1097. by doing it.

1098. If you bought a car,

  1099. new or used,

  1100. what did you do?

1101. Did you do a test drive

1102. to see if it was

  1103. what you thought

1104. it was going to be?

  1105. Going to prove

  1106. this is really

1107. what I want to have,

  1108. to drive?

  1109. That's how we discover

  1110. a lot of things.

  1111. Some of you are

  1112. into one sport

  1113. in particular

  1114. where you probably

  1115. tested various sports

  1116. before you decided

  1117. that's the one

  1118. that I'm going

  1119. to really focus on.

1120. If we'll seek to know

  1121. and do God's will

  1122. from experience,

  1123. we'll find

  1124. that's the best way

  1125. to live.

  1126. Our experience

  1127. will say,

  1128. will prove

  1129. to ourselves

  1130. that God's will

  1131. is good,

  1132. it says.

  1133. God's will

  1134. is just good.

  1135. It's the right thing

  1136. and it leads

1137. to good in our lives.

  1138. God's will

  1139. is acceptable

  1140. or some translations

  1141. will say pleasing.

  1142. Think about it.

  1143. Knowing that you're

  1144. pleasing God,

  1145. isn't that one

  1146. of the greatest feelings

  1147. that you can possibly

  1148. have?

  1149. Knowing that I'm

1150. not just right with God,

  1151. I'm pleasing to him.

  1152. I'm bringing a smile

  1153. to his face

  1154. by the way

  1155. that I am living.

  1156. Honoring him,

  1157. loving him,

  1158. serving him.

  1159. And then God's will

  1160. is perfect.

1161. You can't improve on it.

  1162. We'll find

  1163. from experience

  1164. by living it

1165. that it's the best life

  1166. we can possibly live.

1167. Now one way to know

  1168. if you totally,

  1169. if you,

  1170. we,

  1171. if we're totally

  1172. committed to God

  1173. this morning,

1174. I want you to ask

  1175. yourself,

  1176. do I desire

  1177. to know

  1178. and do

  1179. the will of God

  1180. as revealed

  1181. in Scripture

  1182. in the details

  1183. of my life?

  1184. I mean,

  1185. just as you do

  1186. what you do

  1187. Monday through Saturday,

  1188. are you conscious of,

  1189. do you pray about,

  1190. do you seek

  1191. to know

  1192. and do God's will

  1193. because you want

  1194. to please him,

1195. you want to live life

  1196. the way that he

  1197. designed?

  1198. Or are you more

  1199. concerned about

  1200. just doing what

  1201. you want to do,

  1202. the way you want

  1203. to do it?

  1204. Or are you really

  1205. and truly just,

  1206. you don't care.

  1207. You're just sort of

  1208. out there,

  1209. just doing what

  1210. comes naturally

  1211. with not much

  1212. thought about

  1213. who gets pleased.

  1214. A missionary

  1215. by the name

  1216. of Jim Elliott

  1217. was killed

  1218. by the very

  1219. Indian tribe

  1220. in South America.

  1221. he was trying

  1222. to build

  1223. a relationship

  1224. with

  1225. and be able

  1226. to share

  1227. the gospel with.

  1228. But he made

  1229. a memorable statement

  1230. about Christian

  1231. commitment

  1232. that you've probably

  1233. seen

  1234. that is so powerful.

  1235. He says,

  1236. he is no fool

  1237. who gives up

  1238. that which

  1239. he cannot

  1240. keep

  1241. to gain

  1242. that which

  1243. he cannot

  1244. lose.

  1245. He is no fool

  1246. who gives up

  1247. that which

  1248. he cannot

  1249. keep

  1250. to gain

  1251. that which

  1252. he cannot

  1253. lose.

  1254. You are

  1255. no fool

  1256. by turning

  1257. your back

  1258. on this world

  1259. and the things

  1260. that this world

  1261. offers

  1262. in place

  1263. of God

  1264. and his will

  1265. and his ways.

  1266. You are wise

  1267. to commit

  1268. yourself

  1269. wholeheartedly

  1270. to living

  1271. like a child

  1272. of God

  1273. who loves

  1274. you,

  1275. who is your

  1276. heavenly father,

  1277. who enjoys

  1278. the pleasure

  1279. of having

  1280. a close

  1281. relationship

  1282. with you.

  1283. That's wisdom.

  1284. But the choice

  1285. is yours.

  1286. The choice

  1287. is yours.

  1288. You can

  1289. conform

  1290. to this world

  1291. or you can

  1292. be transformed

  1293. by the renewing

  1294. of your mind.

  1295. But understand,

  1296. the choices

  1297. that we make

  1298. every day

  1299. result in

  1300. consequences

  1301. that we have

  1302. to live

  1303. with

  1304. and one

  1305. day

  1306. die

  1307. with.

  1308. Are you

  1309. prepared

  1310. to continue

  1311. living

  1312. and then

  1313. die

  1314. with the choices

  1315. you've made

  1316. up to this

  1317. point?

  1318. If you're

  1319. not,

  1320. if God's

  1321. spoken to you

  1322. this morning,

  1323. convicted you

  1324. that you are

  1325. separated from

  1326. him because

  1327. you're more

  1328. of a person

  1329. of the world,

  1330. you're more

  1331. concerned about

  1332. your way

  1333. than his way,

  1334. if God's

  1335. convicted you

  1336. this morning

  1337. of your sin

  1338. and it's

  1339. humbled you,

  1340. it's broken

  1341. you,

  1342. it bothers

  1343. you,

  1344. you're willing

  1345. to turn

  1346. from that,

  1347. to let God

  1348. change you,

  1349. I want to

  1350. encourage you

  1351. to do that

  1352. and put your

  1353. trust in Jesus

  1354. Christ,

  1355. that when he

  1356. died on the

  1357. cross,

  1358. he actually

  1359. died for

  1360. you to take

  1361. your punishment

  1362. for your

  1363. sins.

  1364. He arose

  1365. from the grave

  1366. because God

  1367. accepted his

  1368. sacrifice.

  1369. Well,

  1370. the last thing

  1371. Jesus said was,

  1372. it is finished.

  1373. He paid the

  1374. penalty for our

  1375. sins.

  1376. He arose

  1377. victoriously

  1378. proving he

  1379. has conquered

  1380. sin and death

  1381. and defeated

  1382. the devil.

  1383. And the

  1384. scripture,

  1385. the good news,

  1386. the gospel is,

  1387. whoever will

  1388. call upon the

  1389. name of the

  1390. Lord will be

  1391. saved.

  1392. That means

  1393. you.

  1394. Listen to

  1395. the Lord.

  1396. Respond to

  1397. him as he

  1398. speaks right

  1399. now.

  1400. Would you

  1401. pray with me?

  1402. Dear God,

  1403. help us to

  1404. see right now

  1405. how we should

  1406. respond to

  1407. you, to

  1408. what you've

  1409. been saying

  1410. to us about

  1411. commitment.

  1412. Committing our

  1413. lives to

  1414. Christ as

  1415. Lord and

  1416. Savior.

  1417. Or committing

  1418. ourselves and

  1419. you in

  1420. afresh to

  1421. really and

  1422. truly living

  1423. like your

  1424. people, like

  1425. your child in

  1426. every realm of

  1427. life.

  1428. Show us how we

  1429. should respond.

  1430. Help us to do

  1431. it now,

  1432. obediently.

  1433. And then in

  1434. an attitude of

  1435. prayer, let's just

  1436. listen to the

  1437. Lord and respond to

  1438. him.

  1439. I'd be happy to

  1440. pray with you here

  1441. at the front if

  1442. you want to step

  1443. out during this

  1444. time.

  1445. Amen.

  1446. Amen.

  1447. Amen.

  1448. Amen.

  1449. Amen.

  1450. Amen.

  1451. Amen.

  1452. Amen.

  1453. Amen.

  1454. Amen.

  1455. Amen.

  1456. Amen.

  1457. Amen.

  1458. Amen.

  1459. Amen.

  1460. Amen.

  1461. Amen.

  1462. Amen.

  1463. Amen.

  1464. Amen.

  1465. Amen.

  1466. Amen.

  1467. Amen.

  1468. Amen.
